A gambling place or a legal poker room? The City of Dallas is trying to shut it down; owner says he’s within his rights to operate – WFAA.com

Posted: February 19, 2022 at 9:22 pm

Dallas city leaders first approved a certificate of occupancy for a poker room in North Dallas, now the City wants to shut it down.

DALLAS The Texas Card House owners say they are operating a private club where people can legally play poker if they pay a membership fee.

Absolutely, and were operating in multiple cities throughout the state, said owner Ryan Crow.

Crow said what makes it legal is that members keep the money they win without having to give his business any of their winnings.

Two years ago, when he went before the council, even city attorneys seemed to agree with him.

The house doesnt take a cut of this like a casino where the house takes a cut, thats what makes it gambling. Here, all they are charging is a membership fee and as they say, the people playing put money down and they keep the money. There is no split with the house," said Crow.

Some Dallas councilmembers were hesitant.

"This seems like a gambling operation to me, said Kevin Felder, a former Dallas City Councilmember.

But, eventually, the business was approved and Crow opened Texas Card House a year and a half ago -- employing more than 200 people.

"The average dealer makes over 42 bucks an hour and our lowest paying role makes over 30 bucks an hour, so they are well paying jobs. We provide, health, dental insurance, and I stay awake at nights worrying about their future, said Crow.

In December 2021, the City abruptly sent Crow a letter -- saying the certificate of occupancy was issued in error and said it was a gambling place.

"So, we were very surprised when we got a letter saying, 'Hey, you need to shut down.' You know, we think youre illegal based on the Texas penal code, said Crow.

Crow said hes operating seven other places like this across the state with no problems.

"There was no effort to say, 'Hey, you were doing this wrong and you need to fix something.' It was just you need to shut your doors, said Crow.

Crow said the City should be focused on shutting down backroom and unregulated clubs that are operating illegally and where crimes are occurring, not targeting him. He said hes trying to provide a safe place for people to play poker.

Will crypto wallets ever replace cash stacks at the poker table? – Coin Rivet

Posted: at 9:22 pm

The renowned High Stakes Poker television show is poised to make a comeback next week, along with the infamous stacks of cash that it has become synonymous with over the past decade.

The likes of Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, Tom Dwan and more will be featuring when the hit show returns on February 21, with some questioning when cryptocurrency will play a role in high stakes games of poker.

The use of cryptocurrency has taken the online poker world by storm, with players now being able to fund their respective bankrolls with Bitcoin or Ethereum across a number of online operators.

Live poker tournaments have also started to allow players to buy-in with Bitcoin and stablecoins, but is it finally time for crypto to become a mainstay on shows like High Stakes Poker?

The aesthetic of having large stacks of cash on a table are certainly pleasing to most viewers but as the world shifts to a cashless society it really isnt the most practical of methods.

Hardware cryptocurrency wallets have gone from strength to strength over the past decade, with luxury brands beginning to endorse the technology.

High-end fashion brand Fendi recently collaborated with Ledger to launch an accesory that stored peoples hardware wallets, while earlier this week watchmaker Hublot teamed up with Ledger to release a limited edition Bitcoin watch.

As the world becomes more and more used to seeing the use of hardware wallets, it feels like the right time for poker to embrace it with open arms.

PokerNews Op-Ed: Do These Five Things to Fix the Poker Hall of Fame – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 9:22 pm

A new chapter in poker history is set to begin in four months. The World Series of Poker (WSOP), which is entering its 53rd year, will move to the Las Vegas Strip for the first time, while the historic Horseshoe brand will return by taking the place of Ballys. As the page turns from the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, WSOP officials have a unique opportunity to revamp one of their antiquated products the Poker Hall of Fame (PHoF).

Below I offer five things I believe the WSOP should implement in 2022 to make the PHoF even more respectable in the eyes of players, industry professionals, and perhaps most importantly, the fans.

Before I do, let me state that Ive long been and remain a fan of the game. I also fancy myself a bit of a poker historian and have an affinity for the PHoF. It honors the best and most influential poker characters weve ever seen. Tradition. Nostalgia. Romanticism. The PHoF has it all.

It started with the Binion family, and after their business was acquired by Caesars Entertainment in 2004, WSOP officials like former commissioner Jeffrey Pollak, current WSOP Vice President Jack Effel, and Executive Director Ty Stewart have been tasked with not only carrying on the tradition but also doing it justice.

I think theyve done an admirable job in that regard up to this point, but some glaring omissions and future hurdles have brought us to the point that something needs to be done. I cant think of a better time to modernize the PHoF than during the WSOPs return to the Horseshoe, and thats because an often-overlooked fact provides the perfect excuse.

For decades, only one or two players were inducted into the PHoF each year. However, did you know that when the PHoF was established back in 1979 the inaugural class was actually comprised of seven inductees Sid Wyman, Red Winn, Johnny Moss, Felton "Corky" McCorquodale, Edmond Hoyle, James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok, and Nick "The Greek" Dandolos.

One of the issues the PHoF faces is a backlog of deserving players, one thats slated to get much worse in the next couple of years as players like Brian Rast, Anthony Zinno, and others turn 40 and become eligible. In another five years or so, many of the original online crushers will come of age and backlog things even further. If the WSOP continues to only induct one individual a year, which they have the past couple of years, there will be a high level of frustration among nominees.

I actually like the PHoF being rather exclusive, so for me personally, limiting inductions to two or three folks each year is the sweet spot (more on that below). However, I recognize the backlog problem and agree a solution must be found. I cant think of a better opportunity for the WSOP to solve this issue than taking a page out of historys playbook.

With the WSOP headed back to the Horseshoe, albeit a new location, they could mark the occasion by honoring the past and saying, Its not only a new chapter for the WSOP, but for the PHoF as well. For that reason, this year were temporarily taking it back to 1979 by once again inducting seven individuals for the Class of 2022.

For me, this offers a perfectly viable and legitimate excuse to clear the backlog and then return to the more traditional one or two inductees in 2023.

See why Brian Rast deserves to be in the PHoF!

Since the inception of the PHoF, the number of players inducted have varied over the years. Heres a look at how many inductees each year had:

For me, I think the WSOP should return to inducting two players each year with a caveat every three years induct a third industry honoree. As it stands, its extremely difficult for a non-player to make their way into the PHoF (just ask Matt Savage). With primarily players voting, its only natural their bias will lay with their peers.

In my opinion theres a long list of industry professionals deserving of the PHoF including but not limited to poker photographer Ulvis Alberts, historian and longtime WSOP media coordinator Nolan Dalla, and authors Al Alvarez (The Biggest Game in Town) and Jim McManus (Positively Fifth Street). There are also dealers, staff, media, and innovators whove devoted their lives to the game, and giving them a legitimate shot at the PHoF seems fair.

Granted, they have a shot in the current format as criteria stipulate "for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results." However, given the way nominations and voting are set up, its more of a long shot.

Its for that reason Id like to see a special industry inductee every three years. This could be separate from the player induction, and wouldnt even have to be subjected to the same voting process. Instead, the honor could be more akin to a PHoF Lifetime Achievement Award with the inductee being selected by either WSOP officials, living members of the PHoF, the poker media, or likely the best option, a combination of all three.

As I stated above, I love the PHoF, but I believe, as many do, that until PokerStars founder Isai Scheinberg is inducted the whole institution just doesnt hold water. Outside of maybe Benny and Jack Binion, no one has done more for poker than Scheinberg.

He helped shape the entire industry, and theres no doubt the game wouldnt be what it is today without him. Hes long been eligible, but was seemingly blackballed for years with rumor suggesting officials refused to allow him on the list of nominees with a Black Friday indictment hanging over his head.

He was eventually nominated starting in 2016, and the anti-Scheinberg stance has seemed to have softened since he settled his legal troubles, and the PokerStars founder has actually made the list of nominees once again the past two years. However, hes somehow failed to get enough votes for induction. Again, I think this is rooted in players being more prone to vote for other players, but also maybe a touch of the current PHoF members not being overly familiar with Scheinberg and his contributions.

This could be resolved in one of two ways. First, Scheinberg would be a shoe-in if the inductee an industry person every three years idea were to be implements. Second, if they clear the backlog with a larger class this year Scheinberg would no doubt garner one of the coveted spots.

Why I think Ulvis Alberts deserves to be in the PHoF

For many years PHoF voting was split between living members and a select number or respected and qualified poker media, including yours truly. To give the PHoF the respect and legitimacy it deserves, I believe bringing back the media vote is imperative if for no other reason than we tend to have more knowledge and a better grasp of the big picture than the living PHoF members.

"It should be a limited panel of established veterans, those who not only know the game nowadays but also have a firm grasp on its history."

While inductees like Daniel Negreanu, Eli Elezra, and even Doyle Brunson have their fingers on the pulse of the industry, many of those with votes have been out of the game for decades. Its hard to imagine many of them are familiar with the entire crop of nominees each year, let alone with soon-to-be eligible players like Tom Dwan and Phil Galfond. I mean, how much does Berry Johnston know and appreciate online poker?

On the flip side, members of the media tend to be more tied and up to speed on the game. Now Im not suggesting that every member of the poker media should get a vote. On the contrary, it should be a limited panel of established veterans, those who not only know the game nowadays but also have a firm grasp on its history.

The NFL utilizes a 48-person committee comprised largely of media members, who recently got it right by choosing football-player-turned-poker-player Richard Seymour for the Class of 2022. The PHoF should definitely take a page out of the NFL playbook and get the media involved in the mix.

Ive long been an advocate of the PHoF having a physical location so as not to be something relegated to an online website. A place where players and fans can visit to appreciate poker history. What better place to do such a thing than the brand-new Horseshoe Las Vegas, even if its only temporary during the WSOP (heck, why not make it a traveling exhibit the rest of the year and send it to WSOP Circuit stops across the country).

I envision some sort of exhibit featuring portraits of PHoF members with facts and figures of their accomplishments complimented by a wide arrange of poker memorabilia. Years ago, the WSOP actually displayed such momentos in the rotunda of the Rio, things such as temporarily-donated gold bracelets, trophies, and even one of the gold plates Binions gave away back in the day instead of the bracelets weve come to know. More stuff like that, maybe some old-time photos and a first edition copies of legendary poker books, would just be cool to see.

To execute something like this, WSOP officials could turn to the community for help. Theres a long list of both players and collectors with memorabilia (1983 champ Tom McEvoy is one that comes to mind), who may be willing to loan out pieces for such a PHoF exhibit.

Similarly, a lot of individuals might like the idea of donating their poker memorabilia safe in the knowledge theyre going to a good cause where theyll be respected and cherished. Even in the unfortunate event of someones passing, it might be reassuring to know that their bracelet, trophy, pictures, etc. would be going to the PHoF instead of being trashed or given away to a thrift store.

The WSOP has been around for more than five decades and the game of poker itself a lot longer. Theres definitely enough history to draw upon to bring to life some sort of physical PHoF.

There is simply no better time to revamp the PHoF than to coincide it with the WSOPs new chapter, and I hope that both WSOP officials and living members will take the opportunity to consider some of the ideas presented here, or perhaps to introduce some of their own.

One thing the WSOP did last year, and I hope to see return annually, is holding a PHoF event at the WSOP while hosting the induction ceremony during the same time. Eli Elezra was the first to experience it, and being there to witness it firsthand, I felt it worked well.

Ive heard rumblings that the WSOP does in fact have plans for the PHoF in 2022. What exactly those might be I do not know, but I for one am excited if changes are in store.

Please take a moment to vote in the poll below, and also feel free to share your thoughts with me on Twitter @ChadAHolloway or in the Facebook comments.

This Tom Dwan Hand Was Peak TV Poker – Barstool Sports

Posted: at 9:22 pm

They say you always remember where you were when your life was changed. Losing your virginity. 9/11. Tom Dwan putting Peter Eastgate and Barry Greenstein in his back pocket. I remember seeing the above hand and having zero idea what I just saw (full hand below).

High Stakes Poker was the peak of poker on television. Bricks of cash on the table, the biggest names like Durrr, Ivey, Gus, Barry, Daniel, and all the others, and massive pots and huge bluffs. But the star of the show was always Dwan. Always. He either always had it, or pulled off the biggest bluffs at the right times and made his opponents cry. He jokes now about how great he ran in the old days of HSP, but he was also just miles better than some of the competition he was playing with. He was throwing the forward pass when all the other guys were still running it up the middle. For my money, Dwan is the best TV poker player we will ever see. If he's on, you're watching, and it's going to be explosive, electric, and every other adjective you can think of.

If you're into poker, check out our Cracking Aces podcast, a new episode every Tuesday.

Thanks to everyone who listens and subs to the podcast. And make sure to drink your WhistlePig.

PS: Because PokerGo owns every clip in poker and then refuses to make them easy to find on YouTube, this is the best video of the hand I could find. They are so infuriating, it'd be like going on YouTube and not being able to find a Michael Jordan dunk.

Fast forward to 14:03 if it doesn't automatically:

Helluva fold by Eastgate there. I can't remember what interview it was, but Durrr more or less said he knew Eastgate was scared money and was positive he could get him to fold a deuce. Just a perfect hand.

Rohtak, February 18

Food supplements and other drugs have been found dumped in a canal passing near Mayna village here raising the possibility of illegal trade of dietary supplements.

Local officials of the Food and Drug Administration Department visited the spot to inquire about the case.

The matter came to the fore when volunteers of Suno Nahro Ki Pukar, a special campaign to motivate people not to dump anything in the canal went there to clean the canal.

They found packets of supplement capsules and powder floating on the water.

We spotted around 500 small packets of food supplements floating on the water. Many were also lying on the bank of the canal. It seems that these have reached here from other places. While the date of best use of many supplements has already expired, many others are about to expire in the coming days, said Dr Jasmer Hooda, Assistant Professor, All-India Jat Heroes Memorial College, Rohtak.

Hooda, who is leading the campaign, informed that a man who was on evening walk there told the volunteers that such packets had been floating on the water for the past two days. These are used in body building.

Deepak Chhara, an environmentalist and another participant in the campaign, said they felt pain on finding garbage and other materials dumped in the canal whose water was supplied to houses every day.

We do not know when people will stop it but our campaign will continue to make them aware about it, he added.

An official of Food and Drug Administration Department, on the condition of anonymity, informed that they inspected the spot today to take stock of the situation. The information about dumping of food supplements will be sent to DCOs of adjoining districts from where the canal passes through, he added.

Dr Harsh Kumari, Food Safety Officer, said she had not got any information about dietary supplements being dumped in the canal. There is a procedure to dispose of supplements after expiry date. These are returned to the company concerned. Hence, it is illegal to dump supplements into the canal. We will look into the matter if any complaint comes, she said, adding that surprise inspections at regular intervals were conducted at sale counters of food supplements.

Most beyond expiry date

What Are Prebiotics? Prebiotics Benefits, Foods, and Downsides – Healthline

Posted: at 9:20 pm

Many people are familiar with probiotics, the live microorganisms known to improve gut health. Probiotics are naturally found in some foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi and are also commonly taken in supplement form to help support the digestive system.

But what about prebiotics?

Even though prebiotics affect the health of your digestive system as well as many other parts of the body these nutrients are often overlooked.

This article tells you everything you need to know about prebiotics, including what they are, how they affect your health, and how to take prebiotic supplements.

Gut microbiota refers to the trillions of microorganisms that live in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract and make up your gut microbiome. Your large intestine is home to the majority of these microorganisms (1).

They carry out functions that are essential to overall health, including nutrient metabolism and regulation of the immune system (2).

Your gut microbiota can even influence disease risk, including the risk of developing colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and type 2 diabetes (3).

Diet and lifestyle factors significantly impact the diversity and types of microorganisms that live in the GI tract (2).

Prebiotics are essential to a healthy microbiome. In simple terms, theyre nutrients that get broken down by gut bacteria.

Bacteria in the large intestine ferment prebiotics. This releases byproducts called short-chain fatty acids. These byproducts act as energy sources for the cells lining the colon, called colonocytes, and benefit health in many other ways (1).

Prebiotics also influence the makeup and function of gut bacteria, promoting the growth of beneficial microbes.

According to the International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics, in order for a compound to be classified as a prebiotic, it should (1):

There are many different types of prebiotics, including (1):

Most prebiotics are considered carbohydrates. However, some prebiotics are not classified as carbohydrates. Cocoa flavonols are an example of non-carbohydrate oligosaccharides.

Although prebiotics are often confused with probiotics, they are not the same. Probiotics are live microorganisms found in your gut, certain foods, and supplements that benefit health when taken in certain amounts.

On the other hand, prebiotics are nutrients that are dietary compounds that stimulate the growth and activity of certain microorganisms (4).

Some experts have referred to prebiotics as microbiome fertilizers (5).

Read more about the differences between prebiotics and probiotics here.

Prebiotics exist naturally in some foods, including (1, 6):

There arent a lot of foods that naturally contain prebiotics. Plus, many foods that are high in prebiotics, such as artichokes and beans, arent a regular part of many folks diets.

For this reason, synthetic prebiotics are added to some foods to improve their nutritional content and health value. Prebiotics are also made into dietary supplements like powders and capsules.

Prebiotic supplements are used to treat specific health conditions and to improve overall gut health.

Some studies have shown that supplementing your diet with prebiotics may benefit people with gut-related conditions, high blood sugar, and more (7, 8).

However, compared with probiotics, research investigating the health effects of prebiotic supplements is much more limited.

Prebiotics are essential to a healthy microbiome. Prebiotics act as a fertilizer to the microbiome, as they stimulate the growth and activity of certain microorganisms.

A diet rich in prebiotics promotes digestive system health by stimulating the growth of beneficial microorganisms.

The fermentation of prebiotics produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate, propionate, and butyrate. They play important roles in gut and metabolic health.

For example, SCFAs provide energy for colonocytes and are involved in mucus production, regulation of intestinal pH, and more.

In addition to gut health, prebiotics influence immune function, blood sugar regulation, appetite, and energy expenditure (9, 10).

Studies suggest that when taken in specific amounts, prebiotics may improve health in various ways.

Because prebiotics stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria and improve certain aspects of gut health, they may benefit those who have gut-related health conditions like constipation.

A 2020 review noted that treatment with inulin, a type of prebiotic, may benefit folks who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with constipation (11).

It may improve the frequency and consistency of stool as well as intestinal transit time, or the time it takes food to move through the digestive tract (11).

However, a 2021 review found limited evidence that treatment with prebiotics or prebiotics mixed with probiotics (synbiotics) is helpful for treating IBS and that the quality of existing studies is low (12).

So, most experts, including the American College of Gastroenterology, dont recommend prebiotics as a treatment for IBS.

Another 2020 review that included 21 randomized controlled trials found that prebiotic treatments were effective for improving stool consistency, number of bowel movements, and bloating in people with chronic constipation.

However, the researchers noted that its still unclear which prebiotic formulation is best for treating constipation (13).

Even though more research is needed to assess the effectiveness of prebiotic supplements on constipation and IBS, consuming a diet rich in foods high in prebiotics supports overall gut health and may help stimulate the growth of beneficial microorganisms.

Eating a diet rich in prebiotics and taking prebiotic supplements may benefit certain aspects of metabolic health, including blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.

A 2019 review of 33 studies found that treatment with the prebiotics called Inulin-type fructans (ITF) significantly reduced fasting blood sugar, a long-term blood sugar control marker called glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and fasting insulin levels (14).

The researchers found that these results were most significant in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and recommended that people with these conditions supplement with 10 grams of ITF per day for 6 weeks and longer to reap these potential benefits (14).

Additionally, a 2021 review of 33 randomized controlled human trials found that ITF supplements significantly reduced levels of blood sugar, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in people with prediabetes and diabetes (15).

However, not all studies of prebiotics in these populations have found benefits.

A small 2021 randomized, double-blind crossover trial including 29 people with type 2 diabetes found that treatment with 16 grams of ITF daily for 6 weeks had no effect on fasting or post-meal blood sugar levels compared with a control treatment (16).

While prebiotic supplements may help improve certain aspects of metabolic health in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, more research is needed to confirm these potential benefits.

In addition to having possible benefits for metabolic health and the potential to improve certain digestive conditions, prebiotics may benefit health in the following ways.

Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive, and there are many other potential benefits related to prebiotics.

Clinical trials exploring the effects of prebiotic supplements on knee osteoarthritis, obesity, allergies, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, atopic dermatitis, and more are currently underway (22, 23).

Prebiotics may help improve constipation, blood sugar levels, inflammatory markers, and more. However, more research is needed to confirm these potential benefits.

Most types of prebiotics are considered safe and arent associated with serious side effects (24).

Prebiotics are even considered safe during pregnancy and lactation (25).

However, because prebiotics are fermented in the large intestine, taking large doses may lead to symptoms like gas, cramps, diarrhea, and bloating.

The likelihood of a prebiotic causing the side effects listed above depends on several factors.

Prebiotics with a shorter molecular structure or chain length, such as inulin, are more rapidly fermented in the first part of the colon, while prebiotics with longer chain lengths are fermented at a slower rate in the latter part of the colon.

So, shorter-chain prebiotics are more likely to cause GI side effects (24).

Whats more, larger doses of prebiotics are more likely to cause certain side effects than smaller doses.

While low doses of 2.510 grams per day can lead to mild symptoms like gas, high doses of 4050 grams per day could cause diarrhea (24).

Its important to note that a daily dose of 2.510 grams of prebiotics is necessary in order to reap their health benefits. That means prebiotics may cause side effects, even at recommended therapeutic doses (1).

Although prebiotics havent been associated with dangerous side effects, it doesnt mean theyre the right choice for everyone. While some people may have no side effects after they take prebiotics, some may experience significant bloating and GI discomfort.

If youre interested in taking prebiotics, its best to get advice from a knowledgeable healthcare professional first. They can help you decide whether prebiotics are appropriate for your health needs.

Prebiotics are considered safe but may cause GI side effects in some people, including bloating, cramping, and diarrhea.

Experts suggest that if you want to take prebiotics, a daily dose of 2.510 grams is the minimum required for a meaningful effect on your health.

The majority of prebiotic supplements on the market contain between 1.55 grams of prebiotics per serving (1).

Most prebiotic supplement manufacturers recommend taking a serving of prebiotics one or more times per day with a food or beverage.

Prebiotic powders can be mixed with beverages like water or smoothies.

They can also be added to foods like yogurt.

Keep in mind that some prebiotics have special instructions for use.

For example, psyllium husk, a fiber with prebiotic properties, should be taken with plenty of fluids, as it has a bulking effect on stools. It can lead to constipation and even intestinal or esophageal obstruction if its not taken with adequate fluids (26).

If youre trying out a new prebiotic supplement, its important to read instructions and use the prebiotic as recommended to avoid potential side effects.

Also, its suggested to start with a smaller dose of prebiotics and slowly increase the amount over time in order to minimize digestive side effects.

The majority of prebiotic supplements on the market contain between 1.55 grams of prebiotics per serving. They can be taken with food or beverages. Be sure to follow the supplement instructions to avoid potential side effects.

Prebiotics are sometimes referred to as microbiome fertilizers.

They promote the growth of beneficial microbes, fuel colonocytes, and influence health in many other ways.

Some evidence suggests that prebiotic supplements may be helpful for those with chronic constipation, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and more but more research is needed.

If youre interested in taking a prebiotic supplement, talk with a healthcare professional first. They can help you decide whether a prebiotic supplement is right for you.

Supplement warning: Popular pill taken for osteoarthritis acting as food to cancer cells’ – Express

Posted: at 9:20 pm

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is one of the deadliest human cancers with no clinically effective treatment options. PDA is characterised by an intense fibroinflammatory stroma, poor vascularity, deregulated nutrient levels, and rich deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) components. A pancreatic tumours microenvironment is highly stromal, meaning the mass itself is mostly comprised of connective tissue and non-cancerous immune cells. Hyaluronic acid or hyaluronan (HA) is a major stromal component and its accumulation has been shown to play a central role in promoting tumorigenesis and progression of disease.

Hyaluronic acid, or HA, is a known presence in pancreatic tumours, but a new study from researchers at theUniversity of Michigan Health Rogel Cancer Center shows that hyaluronic acid also acts as food to the cancer cells.

The findings were recently published ineLife and provide interesting insight into how pancreatic cancer cells grow indicating new possibilities to treat them.

Lead investigator Doctor Costas Lyssiotis and his study team looked at the metabolism of pancreatic cancer in preclinical models:how cells obtain nutrients and the spectrum of nutrients they utilize to fuel growth and enable therapeutic resistance.

READ MORE:Gloria Hunniford health: Presenter's diagnosis came as a 'huge shock'

Many people take hyaluronic acid supplements for its skin benefits, especiallyalleviating dry skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and speeding up wound healing.

It can also help relieve joint pain in people with osteoarthritis.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the skin, eyes, and joints.

Its primary function is to trap water inside tissue cells, keeping joints lubricated which according to the recent study could be the driving factor for increased pancreatic cancer tumours.

DON'T MISS

Stroma occurs in the bodys natural scarring process, Lyssiotis explained.

As these scars are formed, an abundance of hyaluronic acid gets released.

Hyaluronic acida polymer or long chain of sugars attracts and retains water.

When a lot of it is present, pancreatic tumours become hyperdense, collapsing veins and blood flow.

Lyssiotis says these tumours then become very hard.

Its not that there arent veins or arteries inside the tumour. But the vasculature that is there cant withstand the extreme pressure.

Lyssiotis and his lab wanted to understand hyaluronic acid beyond its contribution to the physiological make-up of pancreatic cancer cells.

They considered the density of these tumours, and wondered: If cancer cells arent getting access to blood-derived nutrients, how are they getting the nutrients that fuel cell growth and become tumours?

Cells which make up a tumour are a combination of many different cell types, some malignant, some not.

A pancreatic tumours microenvironment is mostly comprised of connective tissue and non-cancerous immune cells.

The labs new work indicates that one-way cells do this is by scavenging the hyaluronic acid itself.

Hyaluronic acid doesnt only affect tumours by creating this density, which does make it difficult to treat, Lyssiotis said.

It is literally a chain of sugars. In retrospect, it makes good sense that the malignant cells are also feeding off hyaluronic acid.

Lyssiotis says this study demonstrates just how well pancreatic cancer cells scavenge nutrients in order to maintain their survival and growth.

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer include abdominal pain which radiates to the back, loss of appetite, jaundice, light-coloured stools, dark-coloured urine or itchy skin.

Maev, an emerging direct-to-consumer raw dog food brand, is reporting rapid month-over-month sales growth for its human-grade formulas and supplements. Aside from its raw dog foods and bone broth cubes, the company offers Vitamin Bars it describes as a dogs daily multivitamin.

"Maev Vitamin Bars are a daily supplement offering targeted, balanced nutrition to support your dogs functional goals, which map to the four most common health concerns in dogs in the United States: Anxiety & Mental Health, Weight & Digestion, Hip & Joint, and Coat & Skin, said Katie Spies, founder and chief executive officer of Maev. Many of Maevs customers like to mix and match Raw Food wellness goals with Vitamin Bar goals, to meet each dogs unique needs."

The Vitamin Bars look like something a pet owner could find in the natural health section of their local supermarket. They are formulated with peanut butter, shredded coconut flakes, chia seeds and functional ingredients based on the specific formula, all of which are human grade.

Come-pooch-a

In the final days of 2021, NutriSource Pet Foods introduced its first three meal topper products, all inspired by kombucha. A popular fermented drink touting probiotic and antioxidant benefits for humans, NutriSource has spun the fad into a line of liquid bone broth toppers formulated with postbiotics to support digestion and hydration in dogs.

Come-pooch-a makes mealtime a little more exciting while providing dogs with important nutrients that support their overall wellness, said Adam Martodam, marketing director at NutriSource.

CLIF Pet

In December 2021, Clif Bar & Company announced a new line of plant-based, jerky-style dog treats under its latest brand: CLIF Pet. Set to hit store shelves in early 2022, the line includes three formulas Sweet Potato & Blueberry Recipe, Pumpkin & Apple Recipe, and Butternut Squash & Cranberry Recipe each formulated with seven ingredients and promoting digestive health, according to the company.

Clif Bars flagship brands feature on-the-go snacks for active and health-conscious consumers. The companys expansion into the pet snack space reflects increased demand for function, humanization and convenience in the pet treat market.

To source ingredients for its new plant-based jerky for dogs, Clif Bars Chief Innovation Officer Rizal Hamdallah stated the company will be exploring integration with its existing ingredient supply chain as much as possible.

v-dog meatless jerky

While jerky isnt a novel sight in the pet treat market, the way some companies are formulating their jerky treats is. Roughly one year ago, v-dog introduced kindjerky, its first meatless jerky treats for dogs. Kindjerky treats are chewy and all natural, containing only animal-free ingredients like pea protein, sweet potato and non-GMO coconut glycerin.

"We're confident pet parents want clean, allergen-free options for their pups, said Darren Middlesworth, president at v-dog.

Vegan pet owners looking to pass on their food philosophies to dogs are seeing an increasing number of vegan dog food and treat products on the market today. V-dogs kindjerky adds to its portfolio of vegan dog food and dental chew products.

UnKibble

The human-grade trend continues with fresh, direct-to-consumer pet food brand Spot & Tango. The company launched UnKibble, a line of human-grade, fresh kibble alternative diets, in April 2020, and recently committed to establishing its first in-house production plant in Pennsylvania.

The ability to tailor formulations to each pets nutritional needs also speaks to the increasing humanization of this marketplace. For example, UnKibble diets can be customized based on a dogs age, weight, breed or activity level.

We created this brand because we wanted all pet parents to find comfort and confidence in what they were feeding their dogs, said Russell Breuer, founder and chief executive officer of Spot & Tango.

Goat milk for pets

Meyenberg, a producer of goat milk products for people, extended its consumer base to include puppies and kittens in early 2021. The company launched Tailspring, a brand of milk alternative products formulated to resemble the mothers milk. The 100% human-grade products are intended for nursing puppies and kittens and offer key vitamins, minerals and ingredients to support digestion.

At Meyenberg, weve been hearing from customers for decades how goat milk helped their animals to thrive sometimes even saving lives and we really wanted to serve the community of pets and their owners as well, said Kate Slaney, brand manager for Tailspring.

Staying hydrated

As pet owners become increasingly aware of the importance of keeping their dogs and cats hydrated, DoggyRade and KittyRade entered the market with isotonic beverages for pets that offer health benefits beyond hydration. Both products are designed to be low-calorie, energy-boosting and rehydrating solutions for dogs and cats.

DoggyRade is formulated with prebiotics and can help restore electrolytes lost during activity. KittyRade is formulated with glutamic acid to support intestinal function, as well as taurine to promote heart and eye health.

Bone Apptit

Bon voyage, and bone apptit. In May 2021, global hospitality company Hilton launched a culinary menu for dogs, available at more than 30 of its hotel locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The menu was curated in partnership with veterinary nutritionists and includes four mouth-watering courses: Beef Doguignon, a slow-cooked beef brisket with mashed potatoes, carrots, green beans, sweetcorn and gluten-free gravy; Mutt Roast, a gluten-free tomato pasta topped with cheddar cheese; Earl Greyhound, a beverage blend of lavender, rose petals, lime flower and orange flowers to promote calmness in dogs; and Tailwagger Creek, a non-alcoholic dog wine made from elderflower, nettle, ginseng, lime flower and black carrot.

In an effort to encourage travelers to bring their canine companions along, Hilton has branded 74 of its global hotels as dog-friendly getaways. These locations include dog beds and water bowls, Bone Apptit room service at the select 32 locations, and other amenities for tail-wagging tourists.

The popular beauty supplement biotin is trending again, but not for the reasons you think.

Concern over biotin's potential interaction with COVID-19 diagnostic tests peaked right about the same time the US government was sending out millions of rapid antigen tests to peoples' homes. The widespread news coverage and interest suggested that a lot of Americans take biotin as a supplement or as part of a daily multivitamin.

So, does taking biotin as a supplement interact with rapidtests? Short answer: Very unlikely. But more on that later.

This spotlight on biotin is a great opportunity to examine whether the scientific evidence supports the many results promised by the beauty industry.

Biotin is part of the essential vitamin B-complex. It helps the body convert food into energy and regulateblood sugar levels. It also plays key role in helping cells function well.

The recommended daily allowance for biotin is 100mcg (0.1mg). The biotin in multivitamins is typically 30mcg, or 0.03mg. This amount is easily obtained from a well-balanced diet. Foods that contain the most biotin include eggs, fish, meat, seeds, nuts, and certain vegetables (such as sweet potatoes). As such, biotin deficiency is a rarely made diagnosis by physicians.

However, it can be quite debilitating for patients. Biotin deficiency presents with multiple symptoms including brittle nails, thinning hairand a scaly red rash around the eyes, nose, mouthand perineum. Some research has shown that high-dose biotin supplementation can help in particular with improving the strength of nails in those with known deficiency. However, the research studies are flimsy when it comes to whether supplementing with biotin will further strengthen or accelerate growth in the hair and nails of healthy people.

The beauty industry extrapolated the results of limited research and a small number of case studies to promote biotin supplements for all matter of applications, including skin, hairand nail growth and quality.

Many people take melatonin as a sleep aid: What you should know before you do

Their promises appear to be based on three research studies that feature daily supplementation of 2.5mg of biotin - 25 timesthe daily recommended dose in participants with brittle nails. In the most oft-cited study, eightwomen who had their nail samples obtained before and after 6 months of daily biotin supplementation, demonstrated an increase in nail thickness by 25%. A second study of 45 patients showed that 91% of them had firmer and harder fingernails after an average of 5.5 months. A third retrospective study found that 63% of patients had improved nail quality after 6-15 months of treatment.

While all threestudies demonstrate improvement in nail quality in those who had been diagnosed with brittle nails, none included a placebo group for comparison, an important aspect of a randomized-control trial that increases a studys validity and worth. However, what this research does indicate is that biotin supplementation likely helps in patients withknownbiotin deficiency. What these studies don't demonstrate, is what effect biotin supplementation will have in people with normal nails.

Do you need an 'armpit detox?'Myths about aluminum and deodorant, explained

The evidence to support biotin supplementation for improved hair and skin health is even weaker. There exists only a small number of case reports with claims that biotin supplementation promoted hair health or resolved skin rashes and these were only done in children again without a comparable placebo group.Case studies represent a low strength of evidence when it comes to research studies.

The good news? Supplementing with high-dose biotin is unlikely to be toxic (however high doses can cause stomach distress in some individuals). And since biotin is water-soluble, the body does a pretty good job of excreting excess amounts through urination.

Prior to the pandemic, the FDA had cautioned that high doses of biotin could affect the results of blood tests measuring thyroid levels and other hormones, and some heart tests, which we commonly order in the ER to assess for congestive heart failure and heart attacks. Many lab tests use biotin technology due to its ability to bond with specific proteins which can be measured to detect certain health conditions. In theory, if you take a high-dose biotin supplement, it can produce "false-positive" or "false-negative" blood test results.

Fact check: Experts debunk claim that COVID-19 antibodies turn breast milk green

COVID-19 rapid antigen and PCR tests are nasal (and sometimes saliva) tests. Its extremely unlikely that theres sufficient biotin in the nose and mouth (if any at all) to alter either a rapid antigen or PCR test. And almost all COVID-19 diagnostic tests, including the ones we were sent in the mail, do not include biotin technology, so theres no need to worry about that potential interaction.

Most people are not biotin deficient given that it is abundant in a variety of food sources. But if you think you are suffering from brittle nails or other symptoms, consult your doctor before self-diagnosing yourself with a biotin deficiency. Any of these ailments alone could be caused by a wide range of conditions that should be addressed before landing on biotin deficiency as the cause. And the current available scientific evidence does not strongly support high-dose supplementation with biotin in healthy individuals for cosmetic purposes, including nail/hair growth and/or strengthening.

‘What-aboutism’ Ruling against Trump leaves more questions than answers on free speech | TheHill – The Hill

Posted: at 9:19 pm

A "one-of-a-kind case." Judge Amit Mehta's description of the litigation against four principal speakers at the Jan. 6 Trump rally may have been as much a prayer as a portrayal. As famed Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, "Hard cases make bad law and the litigation against President TrumpDonald TrumpEx-CNN executive discussed interview topics with Andrew Cuomo: report Overnight Defense & National Security Biden 'convinced' Russia will invade Ukraine Hillicon Valley Questions before Trump's social media launch MORE and his associates is a hard case that just proved Holmes right.

In consolidated cases brought by Democratic members of Congress and Capitol Police officers, Judge Mehta ruled on motions to dismiss by the former president, his son Donald Jr., former Trump counsel Rudy GiulianiRudy GiulianiJudge rules Trump must face civil suits over Jan. 6 The Hill's Morning Report - Policies and politics on masks are changing Jan. 6 panel subpoenas individuals who helped Trump campaign 'alternate electors' efforts MORE and Rep. Mo BrooksMorris (Mo) Jackson BrooksBritt in new ad tells 'boys in Washington' to 'man up' Trump meets with Alabama GOP Senate candidate Katie Boyd Britt Republicans spurned by Trump in primaries still embrace him MORE (R-Ala.), as well as several extremist groups like the Oath Keepers. The judge dismissed the claims of a violent conspiracy against Trump Jr. and Giuliani, and he invited Brooks to file a motion to dismiss on the same grounds. He rejected arguments that their speeches at the rallycaused the subsequent rioting in the Capitol. Yet, while admitting that the case raised difficult constitutional questions, he declined to dismiss the claim against Trump.

The ruling will now allow a long-awaited appeal on core constitutional questions, including the protections for inflammatory speech.

Most analysts expected that groups like the Oath Keepers would likely remain in the lawsuit, given their active role in the rioting and therecent chargesof seditious conspiracy filed against them. The most controversial parties were the speakers at the rally near the White House before the riot.

The judge's112-page opinionmakes easy work of dismissing the claims against the other speakers. These speeches were reckless but constitutionally protected. Giuliani's declaration Let's have trial by combat" has been cited by some critics as a clear incitement to an insurrection, but the judge found such arguments were implausible and that Giuliani's words "were not likely" to cause a riot. He also found that Trump Jr.'s comments on the election were "protected speech, and he rejected claims that Brooks urging Trumps supporters to "start taking names and kicking ass" could be the basis for liability.

Ipreviously wrotethat the claims against these four Jan. 6 speakers might find "a sympathetic trial judge" but that "they will likely fail on appeal, even if they survive the trial level litigation." All but one of those claims are now dismissed on the trial level. Moreover, Judge Mehta's opinion seems to reinforce the view that Trump's speech was protected, too.

The judge could well be reversed on the threshold question of immunity, raised by Trump, that presidents cannot be sued for speaking on matters of public interest. Mehta was honest in saying that "this is not an easy issue" and that "the alleged facts of this case are without precedent." Yet, he offered a detailed explanation of why he believes such immunity should not extend to a speech contesting election results the strongest portion of his decision. In so holding, Mehta is making new law and some jurists on appeal, particularly on the Supreme Court, are likely to be concerned over the implications of such liability for a sitting president.

However, it is thefree speech issuethat is most concerning. My concern is not based on any agreement with Trump's view of the election or Congresss certification of it; Icriticized his speechas he gave it and later called forCongress to censure him; nevertheless, his remarks fall well short of the high standard set for criminal or civil liability for speech.

The Supreme Court has repeatedly rejected such liability despite the use of inflammatory or even violent words.

In1969, inBrandenburgv. Ohio, the Supreme Court ruled that even a Ku Klux Klan leader calling for violence is protected under the First Amendment unless there is a threat of imminent lawless actionandis likely to incite or produce such action. InHess v. Indiana, the court rejected the prosecution of a protester declaring an intention to take over the streets because at worst, (the words) amounted to nothing more than advocacy of illegal action at some indefinite future time. In a third case,NAACP v. Claiborne Hardware Co., the court overturned a judgment against the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People after one of its officials promised to break the necks of opponents.

Although Trump pumped up his Jan. 6 supporters with allegations of election fraud and calls to "fight like hell," Judge Mehta acknowledged that Trump also told the crowd that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard. His comments were consistent with a protest in saying that we are going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.

In fairness to the court, it is merely saying that the cases plaintiffs could possibly prove a conspiracy between Trump and some Jan. 6 groups. But he cites little support for such a conspiracy beyond facts like Trumps earliercontroversial statement in a debatethat the Proud Boys should stand back and stand by.Thecourt's careful, meticulous analysis on the earlier claims seems to break down over Trumps status; it struggles to ignore the clear weight of prior case law and countervailing interpretations of Trumps words.

Despite a lengthy, detailed discussion of issues like presidential immunity, Mehta becomes more curt and cursory over Trump's constitutional claims. When Trump's lawyers said his language was largely indistinguishable from that of many Democrats like Rep. Maxine WatersMaxine Moore WatersOn The Money House panel mulls future of 'stablecoin' rules Lawmakers clash over how to regulate 'stablecoins' Remedying injustice for the wrongfully convicted does not end when they are released MORE (D-Calif.), Mehta chided them for playing "a game of what-aboutism."

That "what-aboutism," however, is precisely the point. The selective imposition of liability for speech is the very thing that the First Amendment is designed to prevent.

Asrioting raged in Brooklyn Center, Minn. and nationwide in 2020, Congresswoman Waters went to Minnesota and told protesters there that they gotta stay on the street and get more confrontational.Others have used language very similar to Trumps in declaring elections to be invalid (includingHillary Clinton calling Trump an "illegitimate president") or urging supporters to "fight" or "battle" against Republicans; Rep. Ayanna PressleyAyanna PressleyGreen groups press for progressive upset in Texas House race Black women lawmakers commend Biden on commitment for Supreme Court nominee Congressional Black Caucus members press DOJ on voting rights: 'No lawsuit is too trivial' MORE (D-Mass.) once said, "There needs to be unrest in the streets for as long as there's unrest in our lives.

All of those statements arguably were reckless but clearly protected speech.

Free speech demands bright lines. While this is a "one-of-a-kind case," Trump's comments were hardly unique. And Judge Mehta does not clearly establish why Giulianis "trial by combat" remark or Brooks taking names and kicking ass" exhortation are not calls for imminent violence or lawlessness but Trumps fight like hell would be.

With three of the four speakers now dismissed from the case, only Trump remains. Along with him remains the most looming question: whether the Jan. 6 speech, which was central to his impeachment, was protected under the Constitution. If Trump prevails on appeal, he may claim a degree of vindication thanks to some of his fiercest opponents.

What the court dismisses as "a game of what-aboutism" is all about free speech.
