The Technology Behind Sportsbooks – TechSpective

Posted: February 19, 2022 at 9:29 pm

Gambling and the United States of America are inextricably linked. In the 18th century, lotteries were used by the central government to fund the building of cities, the establishment of universities, and even to financially support the Revolutionary War efforts.

In the decades and centuries that have followed, the United States approach to gambling has flip-flopped between moral outrage at the industry and nationalistic pride over Americas world-famous gambling MeccaLas Vegas.

Is there anything more distinctly American than this dramatic polarization? Even now as you read this article, the USAs gambling stance is hazy. In some states, you are free to walk into a casino and bet your entire life savings on red or black, whilst you are strictly forbidden from betting even a dollar online.

Fortunately, though, in a growing number of states Americans are free to open up a sports betting app on their phone, find out the latest NFL betting odds, and back their team to win the Super Bowl.

In this article, I take a look at how modern technology is impacting the sports betting industry and what it means for you, the consumer.

Before we jump right in lets get a couple of things straight. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 effectively outlawed sports betting in any form across the nation. Fortunately for sports fans, the Supreme Court declared the law unconstitutional in May 2018.

This has meant that since then sports betting in the United States has been for nearly 4 years. The final decision on legalizing sports betting has been left to individual states to decide upon, which means there are still many places where you cant place online sports bets.

Fortunately, ESPN has put together a Sports Betting Map of the USA which you can view by clicking HERE. If you live in Idaho, Wisconsin, Utah, or any other state with tough anti-sports gambling laws, by all means, enjoy this article but do not try and place a sports bet afterward.

Before we start delving down into the minutiae of online sports betting, its important to acknowledge the most important technology that has helped the industry the mobile phone itself.

85% of Americans own a smartphone that is capable of operating a sports betting app thats staggering. That means that around 282 million Americans could place a bet on any sport of their liking in just a few taps of their fingers.

This simple fact has boosted engagement in sports betting astronomically. It is the reason that the states offering legal online sports betting are routinely posting monthly revenues in the millions. To see that in effect, take a look at Pennsylvanias sports betting revenues.

The Coal State took the decision to legalize online sports betting in May 2019. In the month before, Pennsylvanias sports betting revenues for April 2019 stood at $4.2 million. For October 2021 the figure was $42.2 million and for November 2021 revenues doubled to $84.9 million.

Its a similar story for the vast majority of states; legalized online sports betting increases revenues dramatically. For that, we have the smartphone to thank, without it tens of millions of Americans wouldnt have access to sportsbooks.

Finally, lets take a look at some of the finer points of technology that are contributing to the success of online sportsbooks:

AI: In the 1980s if you were an English soccer fan and wanted to bet on the weekends FA Cup games, you would have to go to your local sports betting shop and ask the manager to provide you with special odds.

Now you can open your phone and have access to odds that change minute-by-minute based on team news, weather forecasts, and a myriad of other reasons. Thats thanks to AI and machine learning.

Most sportsbooks utilize AI and machine learning to come up with odds for some of their more niche markets. This gives customers accurate, up to date and fair odds and allows companies to branch out into more diverse betting markets.

Safety: To use the 1980s analogy once again there was little recourse if things went wrong with an unscrupulous provider. Nowadays the technology used by online sportsbooks is so safe and reliable that issues regarding withdrawals and deposits are incredibly rare.

Blockchain: This brings us on to our final technological pointer; crypto-betting. You might not have heard of it before, but it is definitely happening, and for good reason too! Many leading sportsbooks are utilizing Blockchain technology to allow their customers to pay with crypto.

This makes the incredibly safe process of depositing and withdrawing funds with an online sportsbook even safer

All in all, the online sports betting industry is using the minutiae of technology to better enhance the safety and security of its playing base. The biggest impactor on the industry though has been the smartphone. Without it, its hard to imagine a world in which Pennsylvania would be posting monthly sports betting revenues of nearly $100 million.

Texas Tech at Texas odds, picks and prediction – USA TODAY Sportsbook Wire

Posted: at 9:29 pm

The No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) visit the Frank Erwin Center Saturday to take on the No. 20 Texas Longhorns (19-7, 8-5). Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET.Below, we look at the Texas Tech vs. Texas odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

This has all the makings of a massive, thrilling Big 12 battle.

Texas is 15-1 at home this season, including wins against Kansas and Tennessee. The Longhorns lone loss was by 1 point (66-65) to Kansas State.

Texas might be dominant at home, but it is just 9-7 against the spread (ATS) there this season. The Longhorns have covered 3 of their last 4 but only 4 of their last 10. They have the No. 2-ranked defense in the nation, allowing just 57.6 points per game.

As for Texas Tech, it already took down Texas 77-64 this season, covering as a 4-point home favorite. The Red Raiders have covered 8 of their last 9.

Texas Tech is 4-3 ATS on the road. It ranks 105th in scoring (74.2 PPG) and 20th in opponents scoring (61.3 PPG).

Texas 64, Texas Tech 61

LEANto TEXAS(-180).

I know its more expensive, but this has all the makings of a close, hard-fought game. Its more comfortable laying the worse odds here than banking on a team winning by more than one possession.

Texas has been almost impossible to beat at home.

Just because it has won at home doesnt mean it has covered, beating Kansas by 3 (79-76), Tennessee by 1 (52-51), and Oklahoma State by 5 (56-51) within their last 4 home games, failing to cover 2 of those.

Its difficult to beat a team twice, especially one that has the second-best defense in the country and should have a raucous crowd backing it.

Ill take TEXAS (-180) for a small wager to win outright here.

LEAN to TEXAS TECH +3.5 (-110).

I like the money line more in this one considering how close of a battle it projects to be, but Texas Tech, unlike Texas, has been a covering machine as of late.

I already mentioned the Red Raiders are 8-1 ATS over their last 9. Theyre also 18-8 ATS overall. Theyre the best-covering team in the Big 12 and are 8-1 ATS against ranked opponents.

Having already beaten Texas handily at home, this should be a close game. A 3.5-point spread is a bit too much not to consider with how good Texas Tech has played this season.

BET UNDER 125.5 (-107).

With an O/U of 123.5 in their first meeting of the season, the rivals combined for 141 points, well surpassing the projected total.

This time around, the O/U is 2 points higher. The trend points to this being a low-scoring game.

Texas owns the best Under home record in the conference at 11-5, while Texas Tech has the best Under road mark in the Big 12 at 5-2.

Both teams rank outside the top 150 (TTU 161st and Texas 342nd of just 358 teams) in possessions per game.

With Texas ranked 2nd in opponents points per game and Texas Tech 15th in opponents field-goal percentage, this has gritty, slow-paced, defensive battle written all over it.

Alabama at Kentucky odds, picks and prediction – USA TODAY Sportsbook Wire

Posted: at 9:29 pm

The Alabama Crimson Tide (17-9, 7-6 SEC) visit Rupp Arena Saturday to take on the No. 3 Kentucky Wildcats (21-5, 10-3). Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Alabama vs. Kentucky odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The last time these two teams met, Kentucky covered as a 1-point underdog on the road Feb 5. The Wildcats scored just 66 points, winning by 11 in a game that had an O/U of 156.

Kentuckys offense struggled heavily as C Oscar Tshiebwe went just 4-for-13. The Wildcats are 9-16-1 against the spread (ATS) and a perfect 15-0 straight up as home.

Alabama on the road is just 2-5 straight up and 2-4-1 ATS. The Crimson Tide have covered just 1 of their last 5 games and are 2-7-1 ATS over their last 10.

Rankings courtesy of theFerris Mowers Coaches Pollpowered by USA TODAY Sports.

Kentucky 84, Alabama 74

PASS.

Alabama received the most votes of any non-Top 25 team in the most recent rankings. It is a side that has many guards that can light up the stat sheet. Betting against the Crimson Tide at the Wildcats -300 price isnt smart.

Likewise, betting on the Tide, which is 2-5 on the road, against Kentucky, which is undefeated at home doesnt make much sense either.

PASS and look to the points for value.

BET KENTUCKY -6.5 (-112).

Simply put, the Crimson Tide havent been good against good teams. Theyre just 2-6 ATS against ranked opponents. Combine that with being just 2-5 straight up on the road, and Ill take the Wildcats.

Another key reason is that the Crimson Tide are one dimension compared to Kentucky.

Alabama is great at offense, averaging 80.4 points per game (PPG) to rank 17th in the country, but it ranks 324th in opponents PPG (75.5). Kentucky rank 11th (80.6 PPG) and 57th (64.7 PPG), respectively.

Kentucky can defend whereas Alabama cant. That should determine this ball game.

LEANto the OVER 154.5 (-115).

The first time these two teams met, Alabama shot 3-for-30 from 3-point land. Thats not going to happen in round 2. Kentucky also shot poorly (40% overall) in that meeting.

If both teams get back to the mean, the Over should cash. Alabama is 17-9 O/U this season, including 5-3 O/U against ranked opponents.

Given Kentuckys main scorer is Tshiebwe and the Crimson Tide have a 7-footer that can counter his size (C Charles Bediako), this is only a lean.

Mercy, justice, and offering the other cheek Catholic World Report – Catholic World Report

Posted: at 9:28 pm

Jesus before the high priest (Jn 18), as rendered by Jos de Madrazo y Agudo (c. 1803) [Wikipedia]

Readings: 1 Sam 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23 Psa 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10, 12-13 1 Cor 15:45-49 Lk 6:27-38

The Thomistic philosopher Josef Pieper, in Abuse of Language, Abuse of Power, wrote, It is entirely possible that the true and authentic reality is being drowned out by the countless superficial information bits noisily and breathlessly presented in propaganda fashion.

An example of reality being destroyed by relentless propaganda can be found in the state of Oregon, where Ive lived since 1991, where euthanasia, or assisted suicide, is commonly referred to as being merciful. Indeed, the culture of death insists that abortion and euthanasia are instruments of mercy.

Todays readings do not directly address these issues, but they emphatically present a different understanding of mercy. The biblical view of mercy, contrary to the contemporary counterfeit, is rooted in both reality and the mystery of Gods boundless love. First, in the dramatic story from 1 Samuel, there is the concrete example set by David, who has the opportunity to kill the jealous King Saul. Theres no doubt that if the tables were turned, Saul would have swiftly ended Davids life. But the future king, anointed by the prophet Samuel and recognizing that Saul, however evil he was, was also anointed, spared his enemy. Having shown mercy, David states, The Lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness.

That linking of mercy and justice is significant, especially since it has become common today to divorce the two, as though true justice has no place for mercy, and mercy is a willful rejection of justice. In Dives in Misericordia, his great encyclical on mercy and justice, Pope John Paul II noted that although mercy differs from justice, it is not in opposition to itif we correctly understand the two in the light of Gods love (par 4). As todays Psalm declares, The Lord is kind and merciful, for He is as a father who has compassion on those who fear him.

Lukes gospel is sometimes called the Gospel of mercy because of the emphasis placed on this aspect of Jesus teaching. In todays reading from that Gospel, Jesus speaks of a love that is not humanly possible: love your enemiesbless those who curse you. There is also His famous and radical declaration, To the person who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other one as well. Whatever does this mean? Should we, regardless of the situation, never respond to violence or violation except through pacifism?

Saint Thomas Aquinas, in his commentary on Saint Johns Gospel, pointed out that Jesus, when brought before Annas (Jn 18:22f) did not offer His other cheek to be struck. What Jesus refers to, Saint Thomas wrote, was your interior disposition; that is, if necessary we should be ready not to be intolerant of anyone who hurts us, and we should be ready to put up with this kind of treatment, or worse than that.

Saint Thomas then points to Christs example, when he surrendered his body to death. Supernatural love, which goes beyond human affection, is sacrificial and life giving. Mercy is the gift of that love to thoseall of us!who do not, according to the standards of justice, deserve it. As Jesus explained, anyone can love someone who loves in return. But to love our enemies and expect nothing in returnthat is an act of mercy. Mercy, wrote the late Holy Father, has the interior form of the love that in the New Testament is called agape. This love is able to reach down to every human misery, and above all to every form of moral misery, to sin. (DIM, par 6).

What about Jesus condemnation of judging others? This is sometimes twisted to mean that we must make no judgments at all about the actions of others. Of course, that is not only incorrect, it is impossible; we constantly make decisions, big and small, based on our judgment of others actions. Jesus condemned making judgments that are not only unjust, but dare to assess what God alone can judge: the inner heart and motives of others.

However, the Catechism states, although we can judge that an act is in itself a grave offense, we must entrust judgment of persons to the justice and mercy of God. (CCC 1861). Which is why we can rightly condemn euthanasia as an objective evil, while extending love and mercy to those choosing to commit suicide.

Horror of the high seas comes in rogue waves or the steady rise of storm surges – The New Statesman

Posted: at 9:26 pm

The roguest of rogue waves has entered the history books. A four-storey high, once-in-a-millenium wave was documented in November 2020 off the coast of Ucluelet in British Columbia, Canada, and this week was confirmed by scientists as the most extreme of its kind.

Occurring out of nowhere in deep water, often far out at sea, the rogue wave phenomenon was widely considered the stuff of maritime myth until one was caught on camera in 1995. Named Draupner after the Norwegian drilling platform into which it crashed, the 26m-high monster was captured by a laser pointing down from the top of the rig. Suddenly historical mysteries, such as the vanishing of the cargo ship MV Mnchen and its 28-person crew in 1978, had a probable cause.

Shorter than Draupner at 17.6m, the Ucluelet wave was three times the height of its surrounding sea state. As rogue waves are defined in relation to their nearby waves, this makes it the biggest on record.

Scientists at the University of Southampton have shown that such waves are growing in size at a rate of about 1 per cent a year, but little is known about whether these destructive forces will become more frequent in future.

Observing the state of the sea in general is difficult, explains Thomas Adcock, a professor at the University of Oxford, because the lack of wave measurements taken beyond major oil drilling regions. The nasty environment makes it expensive to leave measuring rigs out in the middle of the ocean purely for scientific ends. What research into climate changes impact on wave behaviour does reveal, however, is that regular storm surges are a much more fearsome threat than rogue waves.

Sea levels are projected to rise about half a metre by the end of the century, warns Richard Allan, professor of climate science at Reading University, due to warming caused by carbon emissions that have already been released, though up to 1.5m cannot be ruled out if we fail to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ice sheets become unstable.

Half a metre might seem minimal compared to a towering rogue wave, but it would put more than 800 million people living in almost 600 low-lying cities at risk. Coastal communities around the world have already suffered devastation from higher sea levels combined with heavier rainfall in recent years. In 2012 Superstorm Sandys 14-foot wave surged into New York harbour, and in December last year Hurricane Rai caused a combination of landslides and flooding in the Philippines that killed 400 people.

We shouldnt just worry about storm surges but must prepare for them, argues Friederike Otto, a climatologist at Imperial College London. Disasters occur when hazards meet vulnerability, she says, and when hazards become worse because of climate change, vulnerable populations are even more exposed. Reducing poverty and vulnerability is essential, and should include investing in education, governance and early warning systems, she adds.

The upcoming report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN body tasked with providing countries with regular scientific assessments, is expected to highlight these concerns when it is released on 28 February. From species extinction to ecosystem collapse, disease spread and crop failures, all are often made worse by rising temperatures and rising seas.

Where rogue waves produce nightmares that were once distant enough to drift into legend, the destructive power of the ocean is now increasingly close to home.

New series of weather warnings issued as Storm Eunice continues to hit – Sunday World

A series of new weather warnings issued earlier today would appear to indicate that the county has not escaped the last blasts of Storm Eunice.

he storm, which caused devastation across the country and claimed at least one life, is yet to blow itself out with fresh forecasts predicting high winds and heavy rain from early tomorrow and into Monday.

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow - Rain warning for Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo that states that persistent rain followed by heavy showers will lead to localised flooding in places.

The warning that kicks in at 6pm today will remain in place until 6pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow Wind warning for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal and Connacht predicts very strong southwesterly winds and some severe gusts on Sunday morning.

These will veer west to northwest on Sunday afternoon and through to early Monday morning.

Strong winds, surge and phenomenal waves may lead to wave overtopping particularly at times of high water, and coastal flooding is possible along coasts, Met Eireann said.

A separate Status Yellow wind warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Tipperary and Waterford has been issued for 11am on Sunday and will remain in place until 9am on Monday.

A Status Orange wind warning for Donegal predicts severe west to northwest winds with some damaging gusts possible on Sunday night.

Met Eireann said that after a wet night with widespread outbreaks of rain, tomorrow will be very windy and wet with strong to near gale force southwest winds and some severe gusts.

Rain will be heavy at times leading to localised flooding, before clearing southeastwards to frequent showers through the afternoon, Met Eireann stated.

Some of the showers will be heavy with isolated thunderstorms and hail is possible.

During the afternoon winds will veer west to northwest and they will be persistent strong to near gale force winds, with severe gusts especially along western and northern coasts, with very high seas also leading to some coastal flooding.

Sunday night will remain very windy with strong gusts in the west and northwest, and scattered showers, some heavy with hail, will be most frequent in the northwest with limited clear spells.

It will be another windy to start on Monday with strong northwest winds, however, winds will ease through the afternoon as they begin to back southwesterly.

It will be a wet start to Tuesday with lingering rain quickly clearing eastwards as scattered showers and sunny spells develop, while Wednesday will be another windy day with fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds.

Meanwhile, Carlow Weather has tweeted: The next storm on latest charts here and name or no name it doesnt look good.

Winds picking up tomorrow and staying strong through tomorrow night before peaking then early Monday morning. Anything that has come loose after recent storms could be finished off by this one.
