Bring back the woolly mammoth? Steal DNA? The prospects and pitfalls of rewriting life. – The Boston Globe

Posted: at 6:02 pm

After more than a decade studying artificial intelligence, Webb shifted her sights to the links between biology and technology, generally described as synthetic biology, in part because she observed Big Tech companies becoming deeply invested in it. She and geneticist Andrew Hessel are coauthors of a new book, The Genesis Machine: Our Quest to Rewrite Life in the Age of Synthetic Biology. It does an admirable job of staying clear of both hype and fearmongering, and I wanted to ask Webb why she sees such a wide range of possible outcomes. Our conversation has been condensed and edited.

Some people are customizing their diets based on what they learn from DNA tests. Is the biological age already upon us?

For around three decades, weve been making progress on the technologies that are shaping the biological age. I think we entered it officially when the first in vitro fertilization treatment was completed successfully in 1978.

You can sequence your full genome now for less than the cost of a pair of Nike Air Jordans. However, a good question is what would compel somebody to give up their DNA to help them figure out what food to eat or when to drink what. DNA-based nutrition analysis can be entertaining, like horoscope-based science. Still, you shouldnt make any life choices based on it.

How are you defining synthetic biology in the book?

The bare-bones definition is: Synthetic biology is the application of science to improve or, in some cases, redesign life to have new or better purposes. Its a field of science that combines engineering, computer science, biology, and design.

I want to put a footnote here and say this is not about designer babies.

Do you mean synthetic biology is not only about designer babies?

Yes. I think anytime we talk about genome editing or reprogramming life, people immediately leap to designer babies. But synthetic biology is about making different types of improvements to different types of living organisms.

This includes creating new life.

Theres research being done on minimum viable genomes to understand how the different components work and why. Another field is trying to clone or re-create the DNA of animals that are extinct.

I take it youre talking about resurrecting animals like the woolly mammoth. Do you think its possible?

Lots of genomes are being decoded. George Church, a preeminent geneticist, is working on a version of the woolly mammoth. A couple of days ago some scientists figured out the genome of the numbat, a relative of the extinct Tasmanian tiger. Sequencing technology has gotten better, and we have DNA samples. And so were able to clone genomes, and this potentially could lead to resurrecting species.

The goal isnt to create a zoo filled with formerly extinct animals. Its mostly an effort to increase biodiversity, which has been plummeting, and possibly find new opportunities to deal with climate change. Part of this woolly mammoth project is about rewilding the very northern reaches of the planet, where enormous animals used to stomp around and compact the permafrost layer, which helps to keep greenhouse gases from escaping it.

Can changing the environment be risky?

Engineering biology raises questions about unpredictability. In some limited cases, there are on and off switches that can be coded into genomes. But it can be much more challenging to program an off switch for a complex organism in the wild than for a cell in a lab. Introducing something new into the environment may have downstream impacts that we didnt consider initially.

Many people are understandably worried about engineered viruses. Are there any circumstances where we should root for scientists to create new virus genomes?

The best way to think of a virus is that a virus is just a container for code. In a way, its like a USB stick: Its a container that can carry code thats malicious, benign, or great. Right now, we are dealing with a deadly pathogenic virus. But theres research underway looking at engineering viruses to fight particular types of cancer and other viruses. If we can confront deadly pathogens more precisely at a code level, what does that potentially give us? More control and better options. Right now, theres no precise way to mitigate a lot of the challenging viruses or cancers.

How can gene editing meet the challenges of global warming and food scarcity?

I think this is probably a little bit further off. Lets start with carbon dioxide. We have too much of it right now. But what if there was a way to engineer a leaf that could suck up 10 times more CO2 than, lets say, the average existing leaf, and it created organic fertilizer that doesnt cause any problems with our topsoil?

Or think about externalities that we cant control at the moment, like extreme weather events that put our food production and water supply in jeopardy. We might be able to use some of this technology to engineer better plants, like corn. I grew up outside of Chicago, where corn takes up a ton of space, and a cornstalk only has three to four ears of corn growing on it. What if we could engineer corn to be three feet taller, have 20 or 30 ears of corn, and require the same resources as our current cornstalks? Then we can do that type of farming in a fraction of the amount of space potentially indoors in a giant warehouse where you could control the temperature, humidity, and the amount of water. If you have that level of control, you dont need to use pesticides with chemicals that people are concerned about.

How can a diverse world reach a shared understanding of what the limits of synthetic biology should be?

One way to do that is to make sure more voices are a part of the conversation. One of the issues that we highlight in the book is that many of the editorial boards of core scientific journals are fairly homogenous. For various reasons, we also dont see enough people of color represented in the existing genetic databases. If were trying to optimize the future for everyone, we need more diversity and must involve more people in the conversation earlier on.

What if bad actors get their hands on powerful gene-editing technologies that are cheap and easy to use?

During the World Economic Forum, a collective of people near Davos picked up detritus, like forks and napkins, and claimed to have scraped off the DNA of global leaders, including Angela Merkel and Donald Trump. They said they would auction it to the highest bidder. Were at a point where DNA can be scraped off discarded items and used to try to piece together some form of a genome. Doing so would be problematic. After all, its illegal to pluck a hair off of somebodys head to try to scrape their DNA from it. But in the future, if a bad actor works hard enough, its plausible they could use DNA to invent an ailment intended for just one person.

Given all the possibilities, I completely understand why Emmanuel Macron recently refused a nasal swab when visiting Vladimir Putin in Russia.

Burglar snared after leaving DNA on a rock used to smash into Romsey home – Hampshire Live

Posted: at 6:01 pm

A burglar was snared by police after leaving DNA on a rock used to smash his way into one property and a fingerprint on a window at another.

Ian Masters, aged 33, broke his way into a house in Church Lane, Southampton, on November 13 last year, by prising open a bathroom window.

Portsmouth Crown Court heard Masters smashed a kitchen door using a brick, before smearing cheese across the kitchen and stealing a Nintendo Switch, bank letters, and a laptop.

The items were not recovered.

But Hampshire Constabulary were able to link Masters to the crime after finding a fingerprint he left on the bathroom window.

Then, on December 16, a house in Brook Way, Romsey, was broken into while the occupants were out.

A glass pane on a kitchen door was smashed with a rock to gain entry.

A credit card, two debit cards, 45 worth of Icelandic currency, 30 in cash, two mobile phones and three gold rings, including a wedding ring were taken.

Again, the items were never recovered.

The owner later received a text from his bank to say the credit card was used six times to buy items worth 135.80, with one declined transaction of 21.

Police later discovered DNA left on the rock matched Masters while CCTV footage showed a man matching his description using the credit card.

He was arrested days later on December 23 before being further arrested and charged in January.

Masters, who was serving at HMP Lewes when he appeared in court, has now been jailed for two years after pleading guilty to two counts of burglary and fraud by false representation.

Police Staff Investigator Sarah Stewart from Hampshire Constabulary, said: "Your home is somewhere you should feel safe which is why dwelling burglaries can be so traumatic for those affected, beyond the impact of the belongings that are stolen.

This sentence shows we will use all the tools at our disposal, including forensics, to bring offenders to justice and I hope it reassures our communities that we take burglary very seriously.

His great-grandfather designed Fox Elementary. Now, a piece of his DNA is buried in the ashes. – wtvr.com

Posted: at 6:01 pm

RICHMOND, Va. Along a stretch of Hanover Avenue, one block is now a boulevard of broken hearts. Handmade notes read like sympathy cards.

David Robinson is still processing the destruction of a Richmond landmark.

I cant recall seeing a memorial like this in Richmond for anything, said David. The thought of losing this building was not comprehensible to me.

For 111 years, William Fox Elementary welcomed generations of students. On this day, chain link is keeping people out.

WTVR

This is like going into the middle of Richmonds fan and ripping out the heartbeat, described David.

On Feb.11, this hub of education for 360 boys and girls erupted into an inferno.

Some of the most fantastic fire scenes filmed in the city of Richmond. Lit up the night sky, said David.

Roaring flames chewed through classrooms and more than a century of history.

The power of fire. The power of anything you love so much can be taken away in an instant. Appreciate what you have. Because it might not be there tomorrow, said David.

Charred ruins are all that remain of Fox Elementary.

WTVR

The hundreds of thousands of gallons of water that went in have completely ruined everything on the first floor. The second floor completely gutted, David explained. Everything except the wall is going to needed to be torn away.

The fire is leaving the student body, teachers and an entire neighborhood stunned.

Were in the heart of Richmond. Were in the heart of the fan. This area grew up around this school, said David.

He didnt earn his diploma inside, but his roots run deep. My DNA is here, said David.

Davids ancestor, Charles M. Robinson, designed William F. Fox Elementary. It was one of the dozens of schools Davids great-grandfather planned in Virginia, including Thomas Jefferson High School, John B. Cary, and Albert Hill Middle.

WTVR

Fox was, and always will be David Robinsons favorite.

It was the most technologically advanced public school building in America. Period, said David.

Built in 1911, for $71,000 the school was named for the citys popular superintendent William Fawcett Fox at the turn of the last century.

Beloved by people of all races for his vision to educate children free, said David.

In 2011, the Richmond native delivered a speech at the schools centennial celebration.

When they went to that school building, said David. They were going somewhere special.

David said Fox is more than just bricks and mortar.

Provided to WTVR

This fire is going to be one that thousands of people are going to be telling their children about, said David.

Denise Kern needed to see the destruction first-hand.

There really is no way what you felt. I think everyone was teary-eyed, said Denise.

Denises daughter attended Fox, and her grandson Jackson just enrolled.

It was heart-wrenching. I thought for the children and teachers. I thought for the whole community, said Denise.

Jackson, who is in Ms. Taylors kindergarten class, will need to return to virtual learning for the foreseeable future.

I think if they could preserve what they can it would be phenomenal, said Denise.

Inspectors and engineers explored the shell of a once vibrant building.

It will get immediately worse if you dont take the immediate steps to cover that roof, said David.

WTVR

City and school leaders will eventually determine the fate of whats left of Fox and its future.

The story cant end with they tore it down and put it in the dumpster, said David.

David hopes the plan includes re-purposing what is still standing.

This is as important a building in the city of Richmond as any other, said David. Charles M. Robinson would say you have to rebuild this building.

Robinson wants one of his great-grandfathers crowning achievements to live on as a place of learning for another century.

David said the messages left in ink and chalk at the foot of Fox speak volumes.

WTVR

I think it is like a tribute of what this building means to the community, said David.

David Robinson believes a rebuilt William F. Fox Elementary will eventually mend many broken hearts.

That needs to be the message to every single kid that wrote one of those hearts, said David. Were not going to rip this building from your memory. Were going to show that you can triumph over tragedy.

Here’s What Happened at the Olympics Tuesday – The New …

Alex Hall let out a whoop when he landed his last trick on the slopestyle course, and that was before the judges awarded him with what would be the winning score. It was, he said later, the best run of his life.

Oh, I was stoked, he said. I couldnt believe I just landed that.

Hall was one of three Americans looking to crowd the medal stand at the mens freestyle skiing slopestyle event, hoping that a European-centric field would not disrupt those plans.

Two of them did it: Hall won gold and Nick Goepper took silver on another sunny, below-zero day at Genting Snow Park. Jesper Tjader of Sweden won bronze.

In a competition where only a skiers best score counted, Hall set the standard early with a 90.01 score on the first of three runs. Everyone else spent the frigid morning trying to match it, but no one did. Goepper came closest, on his second run, scoring 86.48.

All right, he said when the score popped up. Ill take it.

Each of the Americans in the final arrived with high hopes and a stirring story. Goepper, 27, was looking to complete a full rainbow of medals, having won a bronze in 2014 and a silver in 2018. He has battled alcohol abuse and depression, opening up about his struggles after his 2018 performance in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

In an interview last month, Goepper said that he was glad that other Olympians seem increasingly willing to discuss their mental health.

Colby Stevenson, 24, was in a near-fatal car accident in 2016, late at night on a rural road in Idaho. He spent days in a coma, but recovered to return to the global circuit and win major events. At these Olympics, he won a silver medal in big air and was a contender for another medal in slopestyle.

Instead, he finished seventh, unable to cleanly land the run he imagined.

Gave it everything I had, he said after his last chance.

The day belonged to Hall. The 23-year-old was born in Alaska but grew up mostly in Switzerland, the son of professors at the University of Zurich. He did not have coaching until he was 16, when he was invited by the U.S. freeski team to train in Utah. For a time, he considered competing for Italy, where his mother is from.

That background, free from the constraints of coaching and youth competitions, imbibed him with a bit of a free spirit.

He was 16th in slopestyle at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, just as his career was taking off. He won a World Cup event that year and the X Games in 2019. He was third at last years world championships.

He is tall, well over six feet, but stands out on the slopes mostly for his originality.

Youll see him doing a whole bunch of taps and nose butters and creative ways to utilize the course, U.S. freeski coach Dave Euler said of Hall in December. Hes a very creative course user.

The Olympic contest was the final showing for the slopestyle course, a standout venue but a temporary one, made of snow designed to look like a section of the nearby Great Wall. Its combination of rails, obstacles and jumps created a plethora of possibilities, but vexed some of the worlds best snowboarders and freeskiers. Hall and Goepper loved it.

As soon as you standardize this sport, youre going to kill it, Goepper said. So if you can leave the creativity and the artistry up to us, that is going to keep this sport fresh.

It is why Hall was deemed the worthiest of Olympic champions. He has won big contests with dizzying spins, a ceaseless spin-to-win trend in both freeskiing and snowboarding that worries purists.

But on Wednesday, Hall brought a bag of technical tricks, hoping the judges would reward him for originality rather than rotations.

His last jump was one that he had landed only a couple of times before, even though it is really only a 900-degree rotation half of what many other tricks are these days. As Hall described it, he spun one way in the air, stopped and spun the other way before landing.

That led to the whoop.

Ive always told myself, if Im not having fun doing it, then theres really no reason to do it, Hall said. So I might as well do what brings me all this joy.

His smile was concealed by a mask, a hallmark of an Olympics held during a pandemic. But his eyes lit up below his ice-frosted eyebrows. He wore an American flag over his shoulders, and soon, a gold medal around his neck.
