Alabama at Kentucky odds, picks and prediction – USA TODAY Sportsbook Wire
Posted: February 19, 2022 at 9:29 pm
The Alabama Crimson Tide (17-9, 7-6 SEC) visit Rupp Arena Saturday to take on the No. 3 Kentucky Wildcats (21-5, 10-3). Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Alabama vs. Kentucky odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.
The last time these two teams met, Kentucky covered as a 1-point underdog on the road Feb 5. The Wildcats scored just 66 points, winning by 11 in a game that had an O/U of 156.
Kentuckys offense struggled heavily as C Oscar Tshiebwe went just 4-for-13. The Wildcats are 9-16-1 against the spread (ATS) and a perfect 15-0 straight up as home.
Alabama on the road is just 2-5 straight up and 2-4-1 ATS. The Crimson Tide have covered just 1 of their last 5 games and are 2-7-1 ATS over their last 10.

Kentucky 84, Alabama 74
PASS.
Alabama received the most votes of any non-Top 25 team in the most recent rankings. It is a side that has many guards that can light up the stat sheet. Betting against the Crimson Tide at the Wildcats -300 price isnt smart.
Likewise, betting on the Tide, which is 2-5 on the road, against Kentucky, which is undefeated at home doesnt make much sense either.
PASS and look to the points for value.
BET KENTUCKY -6.5 (-112).
Simply put, the Crimson Tide havent been good against good teams. Theyre just 2-6 ATS against ranked opponents. Combine that with being just 2-5 straight up on the road, and Ill take the Wildcats.
Another key reason is that the Crimson Tide are one dimension compared to Kentucky.
Alabama is great at offense, averaging 80.4 points per game (PPG) to rank 17th in the country, but it ranks 324th in opponents PPG (75.5). Kentucky rank 11th (80.6 PPG) and 57th (64.7 PPG), respectively.
Kentucky can defend whereas Alabama cant. That should determine this ball game.
LEANto the OVER 154.5 (-115).
The first time these two teams met, Alabama shot 3-for-30 from 3-point land. Thats not going to happen in round 2. Kentucky also shot poorly (40% overall) in that meeting.
If both teams get back to the mean, the Over should cash. Alabama is 17-9 O/U this season, including 5-3 O/U against ranked opponents.
Given Kentuckys main scorer is Tshiebwe and the Crimson Tide have a 7-footer that can counter his size (C Charles Bediako), this is only a lean.

Jesus before the high priest (Jn 18), as rendered by Jos de Madrazo y Agudo (c. 1803) [Wikipedia]
Readings: 1 Sam 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23 Psa 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10, 12-13 1 Cor 15:45-49 Lk 6:27-38
The Thomistic philosopher Josef Pieper, in Abuse of Language, Abuse of Power, wrote, It is entirely possible that the true and authentic reality is being drowned out by the countless superficial information bits noisily and breathlessly presented in propaganda fashion.
An example of reality being destroyed by relentless propaganda can be found in the state of Oregon, where Ive lived since 1991, where euthanasia, or assisted suicide, is commonly referred to as being merciful. Indeed, the culture of death insists that abortion and euthanasia are instruments of mercy.
Todays readings do not directly address these issues, but they emphatically present a different understanding of mercy. The biblical view of mercy, contrary to the contemporary counterfeit, is rooted in both reality and the mystery of Gods boundless love. First, in the dramatic story from 1 Samuel, there is the concrete example set by David, who has the opportunity to kill the jealous King Saul. Theres no doubt that if the tables were turned, Saul would have swiftly ended Davids life. But the future king, anointed by the prophet Samuel and recognizing that Saul, however evil he was, was also anointed, spared his enemy. Having shown mercy, David states, The Lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness.
That linking of mercy and justice is significant, especially since it has become common today to divorce the two, as though true justice has no place for mercy, and mercy is a willful rejection of justice. In Dives in Misericordia, his great encyclical on mercy and justice, Pope John Paul II noted that although mercy differs from justice, it is not in opposition to itif we correctly understand the two in the light of Gods love (par 4). As todays Psalm declares, The Lord is kind and merciful, for He is as a father who has compassion on those who fear him.
Lukes gospel is sometimes called the Gospel of mercy because of the emphasis placed on this aspect of Jesus teaching. In todays reading from that Gospel, Jesus speaks of a love that is not humanly possible: love your enemiesbless those who curse you. There is also His famous and radical declaration, To the person who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other one as well. Whatever does this mean? Should we, regardless of the situation, never respond to violence or violation except through pacifism?
Saint Thomas Aquinas, in his commentary on Saint Johns Gospel, pointed out that Jesus, when brought before Annas (Jn 18:22f) did not offer His other cheek to be struck. What Jesus refers to, Saint Thomas wrote, was your interior disposition; that is, if necessary we should be ready not to be intolerant of anyone who hurts us, and we should be ready to put up with this kind of treatment, or worse than that.
Saint Thomas then points to Christs example, when he surrendered his body to death. Supernatural love, which goes beyond human affection, is sacrificial and life giving. Mercy is the gift of that love to thoseall of us!who do not, according to the standards of justice, deserve it. As Jesus explained, anyone can love someone who loves in return. But to love our enemies and expect nothing in returnthat is an act of mercy. Mercy, wrote the late Holy Father, has the interior form of the love that in the New Testament is called agape. This love is able to reach down to every human misery, and above all to every form of moral misery, to sin. (DIM, par 6).
What about Jesus condemnation of judging others? This is sometimes twisted to mean that we must make no judgments at all about the actions of others. Of course, that is not only incorrect, it is impossible; we constantly make decisions, big and small, based on our judgment of others actions. Jesus condemned making judgments that are not only unjust, but dare to assess what God alone can judge: the inner heart and motives of others.
However, the Catechism states, although we can judge that an act is in itself a grave offense, we must entrust judgment of persons to the justice and mercy of God. (CCC 1861). Which is why we can rightly condemn euthanasia as an objective evil, while extending love and mercy to those choosing to commit suicide.

Horror of the high seas comes in rogue waves or the steady rise of storm surges – The New Statesman
Posted: at 9:26 pm
The roguest of rogue waves has entered the history books. A four-storey high, once-in-a-millenium wave was documented in November 2020 off the coast of Ucluelet in British Columbia, Canada, and this week was confirmed by scientists as the most extreme of its kind.
Occurring out of nowhere in deep water, often far out at sea, the rogue wave phenomenon was widely considered the stuff of maritime myth until one was caught on camera in 1995. Named Draupner after the Norwegian drilling platform into which it crashed, the 26m-high monster was captured by a laser pointing down from the top of the rig. Suddenly historical mysteries, such as the vanishing of the cargo ship MV Mnchen and its 28-person crew in 1978, had a probable cause.
Shorter than Draupner at 17.6m, the Ucluelet wave was three times the height of its surrounding sea state. As rogue waves are defined in relation to their nearby waves, this makes it the biggest on record.
Scientists at the University of Southampton have shown that such waves are growing in size at a rate of about 1 per cent a year, but little is known about whether these destructive forces will become more frequent in future.
Observing the state of the sea in general is difficult, explains Thomas Adcock, a professor at the University of Oxford, because the lack of wave measurements taken beyond major oil drilling regions. The nasty environment makes it expensive to leave measuring rigs out in the middle of the ocean purely for scientific ends. What research into climate changes impact on wave behaviour does reveal, however, is that regular storm surges are a much more fearsome threat than rogue waves.
Sea levels are projected to rise about half a metre by the end of the century, warns Richard Allan, professor of climate science at Reading University, due to warming caused by carbon emissions that have already been released, though up to 1.5m cannot be ruled out if we fail to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ice sheets become unstable.
Half a metre might seem minimal compared to a towering rogue wave, but it would put more than 800 million people living in almost 600 low-lying cities at risk. Coastal communities around the world have already suffered devastation from higher sea levels combined with heavier rainfall in recent years. In 2012 Superstorm Sandys 14-foot wave surged into New York harbour, and in December last year Hurricane Rai caused a combination of landslides and flooding in the Philippines that killed 400 people.
We shouldnt just worry about storm surges but must prepare for them, argues Friederike Otto, a climatologist at Imperial College London. Disasters occur when hazards meet vulnerability, she says, and when hazards become worse because of climate change, vulnerable populations are even more exposed. Reducing poverty and vulnerability is essential, and should include investing in education, governance and early warning systems, she adds.
The upcoming report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN body tasked with providing countries with regular scientific assessments, is expected to highlight these concerns when it is released on 28 February. From species extinction to ecosystem collapse, disease spread and crop failures, all are often made worse by rising temperatures and rising seas.
Where rogue waves produce nightmares that were once distant enough to drift into legend, the destructive power of the ocean is now increasingly close to home.

Posted: at 9:26 pm
A series of new weather warnings issued earlier today would appear to indicate that the county has not escaped the last blasts of Storm Eunice.
he storm, which caused devastation across the country and claimed at least one life, is yet to blow itself out with fresh forecasts predicting high winds and heavy rain from early tomorrow and into Monday.
Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow - Rain warning for Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo that states that persistent rain followed by heavy showers will lead to localised flooding in places.
The warning that kicks in at 6pm today will remain in place until 6pm tomorrow.
Meanwhile, a Status Yellow Wind warning for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal and Connacht predicts very strong southwesterly winds and some severe gusts on Sunday morning.
These will veer west to northwest on Sunday afternoon and through to early Monday morning.
Strong winds, surge and phenomenal waves may lead to wave overtopping particularly at times of high water, and coastal flooding is possible along coasts, Met Eireann said.
A separate Status Yellow wind warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Tipperary and Waterford has been issued for 11am on Sunday and will remain in place until 9am on Monday.
A Status Orange wind warning for Donegal predicts severe west to northwest winds with some damaging gusts possible on Sunday night.
Met Eireann said that after a wet night with widespread outbreaks of rain, tomorrow will be very windy and wet with strong to near gale force southwest winds and some severe gusts.
Rain will be heavy at times leading to localised flooding, before clearing southeastwards to frequent showers through the afternoon, Met Eireann stated.
Some of the showers will be heavy with isolated thunderstorms and hail is possible.
During the afternoon winds will veer west to northwest and they will be persistent strong to near gale force winds, with severe gusts especially along western and northern coasts, with very high seas also leading to some coastal flooding.
Sunday night will remain very windy with strong gusts in the west and northwest, and scattered showers, some heavy with hail, will be most frequent in the northwest with limited clear spells.
It will be another windy to start on Monday with strong northwest winds, however, winds will ease through the afternoon as they begin to back southwesterly.

Wear a suit to the office. Its a special occasion – The Guardian
Posted: at 9:25 pm
Hes the designer famed for reviving Savile Row tailoring in the Cool Britannia era of the 90s with his sleek, jewel-coloured suits. Since then, office attire has become less formal and working from home has taken off, yet Ozwald Boateng believes rumours of the death of the suit are greatly exaggerated.
As he prepared to show at London fashion week on Monday after a 12-year absence, he told the Observer that he believes the suit will be seen as less an everyday work uniform and more as special occasion wear but with many of those going into an office just two or three days a week making more of an effort and opting to dress more formally.
During the pandemic, we had two years of re-evaluating everything, and our attitudes to the way we dress changed, Boateng said. Hybrid working had informed the way we approached suiting up, he added this time last year, searches for suits had fallen by 34% and there was a rise in smart-casual workwear informed by virtual office meetings. Now its a choice, rather than a uniform. When we go back into the office, youll think more about [wearing a suit]. It will be more of an occasion. I think were going to make more of an effort, he said.
Despite his absence from London fashion week hes been concentrating on other projects, including designing uniforms for British Airways staff Boateng remains relevant. The conversation about the death of the suit is as current as ever, and diversity and structural racism remain hot topics among the fashion set. Mondays show will be an immersive celebration of black excellence in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, with nods to his Ghanaian heritage.
The George Floyd experience brought a sadness to my heart and made me think that theres so much more to be done, he said. Even though there has been change, there also has to be an acceptance of change. Sometimes, its easier to push it away and say can we move on?. But it still needs to be talked about.
When Boateng opened his shop on Savile Row in the 90s, he was part of the New Bespoke Movement: hip young gunslingers who were seen as modernising the area, cutting through the elitism. In the late 1990s, Cool Britannia was reaching a global audience and Savile Row was ripe for being reinvented, says Professor Andrew Groves, director of the Westminster Menswear Archive.
Like Tommy Nutter in the 1970s, Ozwald Boateng, along with Richard James, Timothy Everest and Richard Anderson, made it cool to hang out on Savile Row.
But he faced discrimination, too. In his biographical film, A Mans Story, Boateng said: You werent accepted because you are black, encapsulating the uneasy tensions that existed. I came to Savile Row to evolve tradition, he says now. I remember Andr Leon Talley saying, youre not a tailor, youre a couturier. What I was doing was taking traditional values and finding ways of modernising them. That created a uniqueness.
Moving on to become creative director at Givenchy Homme in 2003, Boateng and his trademark look became a favourite of celebrities, including Will Smith, Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba, Jamie Foxx, Spike Lee, Jude Law, Prince Charles and Barack Obama. He was also in demand in Hollywood (Ebony magazine called him Great Britains biggest import since the Beatles) and has costumed films such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Black Panther and Stanford Blatchs character in Sex and the City.
Boatengs appeal was that his tailoring was always edgier than the average suit and, after showing sporadically at Harlems Apollo Theatre and in Accra, hes now back. His show promises to be of epic proportions, featuring 100 creatives, and will focus on the African diaspora. Both thematically and aesthetically, his reappearance chimes with a zeitgeist that seems more open to diverse stories told through fashion. The inspiration behind his current show marks a change from his early days 30 years ago, when he admitted in an interview that when I first started designing, I never used to reference Africa.
His name is mentioned by young menswear designers, such as Bianca Saunders and Priya Ahluwalia, both of whom use their experience as second-generation immigrants to influence their collection. It was incredibly inspiring for me as a young black woman to see someone that looks like me become such an industry powerhouse, said Saunders. When I started, Ozwald and his team were very supportive and provided me with fabrics for my graduate collection. His arrival on Savile Row and in the fashion industry had huge cultural significance, and he has inspired many others, too. At that point, Ozwald Boateng was one of the few people of colour in the UK fashion industry.
Boateng doesnt see Mondays show as a return to showing regularly. When I have something to say, Im going to do a show, he says. But he does see it as a restart of sorts. In terms of me doing another show next season, I havent thought about it, he says. Lets get through Monday and see what happens. I might do another one next week No, Im kidding!

Conservative Judaism: The Beginning of the End? | Sam Lehman-Wilzig | The Blogs – The Times of Israel

For Conservative Judaism in America, the news lately has been ominous. Looking back over the years, its even worse! Which raises the question: does it have a real future?
I started thinking about this when a friend sent me some news from my old Washington Heights neighborhood (in Upper, Upper Manhattan) where I grew up. The main Conservative synagogue there, Fort Tryon Jewish Center, had to sell off its building to a condominium contractor. A minor piece of news, I thought and then a larger item appeared a few days ago: the American Jewish University in Los Angeles (other than the JTS, the only Conservative Rabbinical Ordination school in the US) was selling off its lovely campus! Yes, it plans to continue working, as the JTA reported: American Jewish University announced the decision in a letter to its students that said the sale would help pay for more academic offerings and community programs as the institution increasingly turns digital. Virtual education might help future rabbis to deal with Zoom prayers, but thats not what minyan Judaism is all about.
And then the true shocker appeared in the news: next year there wont be enough new Conservative rabbis to fill all the vacancies in the movements American synagogues! If the most important role in an organization cant find enough workers, that sounds like the beginning of the movements death knell.
In a sense, none of this should surprise anyone. As a PEW survey in 2021 noted: a quarter of adults who are currently Jewish or were raised that way say they were brought up in Conservative Judaism, while 15% identify as Conservative Jews today. For every person who has joined Conservative Judaism, nearly three people who were raised in the Conservative movement have left it.In short, the Conservative movement has been losing adherents for several decades. It was by far the largest of the three main Jewish-American denominations in the 1950s and 1960s. It barely beats out Orthodoxy today and has fallen far below Reform Judaism.
What happened? The short answer is that for any religious sect or denomination its tough to be caught in the middle. Religion has a tendency to push people to extremes: either liberal universalism (Reform Judaism; Christian Unitarianism) or dogmatic particularism (Orthodox Judaism; Catholicism). Put another way, its easier to either go with general societys zeitgeist flow or hunker down and adhere to strict traditionalism. Finding a middle way is fraught with compromises not something that religion excels in.
Perhaps the best example of this conundrum in which the Conservative Movement found itself was the mass Jewish migration after WW2 from the cities to the suburbs. The problem: in the suburbs people tended to live much further away from the synagogue not in walking distance for most congregants. The question became: should the Conservative movement go along with Reform Judaism that permitted driving to synagogue on the Sabbath, or stick to age-old halakhic proscriptions that traditionally forbade this (because the autos internal combustion engine involved fire)? After much internal, earnest, halakhic debate, a decision was issued to split the baby in half: only driving to synagogue was permitted, but not to anywhere else on the sabbath. It doesnt take a social psychologist to understand that this distinction would not be understood by the movements parishioners, nor adhered to.
Worse yet, not only was the decision halakhically untenable (using fire is one of the 39 totally strict prohibitions regarding Sabbath activity), but this only further encouraged the movements adherents to live further away from the neighborhood where the synagogue was located thereby distancing Conservative Jews from each other even during the week! Any sense of a tight Jewish community quickly evaporated.
Whether because of this decision or not related at all, the ensuing decades were witness to a growing sociological gap between the Conservative leadership (rabbis, etc.) and the laity. Whereas the former (the Jewish Theological Seminary leading the way) continued to try and adhere to Jewish halakha in its decisions (most of the time successfully), many and then most of its Jewish constituency lived lives increasingly disconnected from Jewish law for example, at first eating non-kosher only outside the home, and then also inside the home. There was a limit to how liberal the JTS could be (even the School of Hillel 2000 years ago was flexible only up to a point), and the laity either jumped ship or simply ignored the JTS strictures from on high. Indeed, one of the reasons that there arent enough Conservative rabbis today is precisely this disconnect: who would want to shepherd a flock that refuses to follow the path?
Let it be said that the Conservative movement has done some wonderful work. Its Camp Ramah network is a jewel (I worked there for several years as sports director and educator). The Solomon Schechter Jewish Day School chain has provided great Jewish education to tens of thousands of the movements youngsters. But neither could fully service the million or more congregants that Conservatism had decades ago.
Of course, if the Conservative movement ultimately disappears, that is not to say that its adherents would stop living Jewish lives. Many will continue to move leftwards to Reform Judaism, itself becoming more Jewishly traditional over the years; others will move rightwards and find common cause with Modern Orthodoxy especially its more egalitarian wing that is making mighty efforts to square Orthodoxy with the circle of womens equality. It is questionable whether American Jewry will really suffer in any way if only two major denominations survive (three, if you want to count ultra-Orthodoxy as distinct, which in many ways it certainly is). The future of American Jewry is not a question of how many denominations survive; rather, its a matter of how many Jews remain altogether within the Jewish fold, living lives that can be said to have significant Jewish content.
