Andreas Tsagas Furs and Leather Designs Transformed Denver Into the Wild West With Cowboys and Angels Runway Show – 303 Magazine
Posted: January 24, 2022 at 10:18 am
Its been a quiet few weeks for the Denver Fashion scene until this past weekend. Presented by Void Studios, Andreas Tsagas Fur and Leather Designs took the catwalk on Jan. 21 for one of the first runway shows of the year. This show-stopping event was certainly one for the books.
The spacious studio space created an ambiance perfect for the Cowboys and Angels themed show. Andreas Tsagas is known for stunning fur pieces and intricate leatherwork, but the show itself was much more than one could have imagined.
The first half was filled with striking, entirely black looks that brought high energy to the studio. With a wooden piano and western music, attendees were taken back to the days of the American West.
All photography by Emily Faith Studios.
The looks felt as if attendees were bombarded by a group of cowboys, pirates and bikers. From fringe to fur, to leather accents, to embellished jewelry, to sleek black top hats, this collection was bold and unique. Three models walked at a time featuring similar looks, putting audience members in a ghostly trance. From head to toe, models adorned dark makeup, long wigs and a variety of accessories making these looks an entire production.
This sexy take on cowboys was created with extreme attention to detail. Several looks featured a variety of layering pieces and textures including velvet, silk, leather and fur. Accessories like platform boots and chunky necklaces modernized these looks making for an almost futuristic cowboy theme with lots of dimensions in the process.

The first half of the show escalated to include pops of reds and browns in leather garments. It began to feel almost romantic to be surrounded by fierce models in what was meant to be a ghost town in the Wild West. As a result, each set of three looks told a different story. Therefore, this collection truly elevated runway shows with a unique take on storytelling.
Following a brief intermission, the angels aspect of the show took shape. This collection was defined by color with bright hues and subtle neutral tones establishing recognition of the time period. With the words prairie fire emblazoned on the wall, attendees were taken to the simpler times when the land brought opportunity and meaning to peoples lives. While the first half of the show felt like trouble just walked into the saloon, this collection featured the everyday folk and the royalty of the American West.
Like the other segment, three models walked at a time and each set of three was different from the next. Following the initial runway walk, models lingered in the back of the space. This distinctive runway structure provided an opportunity for attendees to embrace each look and admire the detail. It also established a storyline where all of the looks were connected to create a comprehensive collection.
From layered sequined dresses to intricate floral hoods and headpieces, these looks were light and airy but told a story nonetheless. Several models wore platform white boots and colorful skirts, making for a modern vintage and retro ambiance. While these looks embodied angels, they also established a hipster cowboy essence.

The hair and makeup elevated each look with long red wigs and blonde layered mullets. Colorful furs and southwestern patterns and fringe graced the runway alongside patchwork pants, depicting the expert craft and detail that went into making each of these looks. Overall, the collection established elegance to prairie life and stunned attendees with delectable high fashion all the while.
Tsagas event was the ultimate success in bringing energy to Void Studios and creating a runway show unlike any other. This unique space can be easily transformed for runway productions and the venue shared on Instagram recently that Void Studios will continue to be a hub for Denver fashion to flourish this year.

TONGUE IN CHEEK: Rack and rune: A sangoma-druidess has seen our future it wears pink gloves and goes ‘he he he’ – Daily Maverick
Posted: at 10:18 am
Were all so concerned about what the future holds not just the long-term future (climate change: the Earth burns, everybody dies) but the short-term future (ANC implodes, South Africa collapses, you cant get a decent coffee in Rosebank any more). And now were looking at a new year, 2022, that could easily be a repeat, perhaps with small variations, of 2020 and 2021
So I went looking for someone to predict that future. And, after a few misfires, I found a woman who could see at least something of whats looming in 2022.
Shes named Fata Cattiva. Im presuming thats a nom de clairvoyance, because Fata runs a thriving business in seeing the future, predicting whatll happen in the world and in your life, whether youll get your lover back, et cetera; also how to get that cash windfall, how to remove a curse that has been placed upon you, how to put a curse on someone, and so forth.
Shes a fully qualified sangoma, inyanga, reiki healer, Tarot decipherer, Vedic astrologer, reader of the runes and a druidess and she has the fancy furry outfits to prove it. She draws on multiple traditions, she says, in order to mobilise all the necessary cosmic forces to see to your personal desires and needs.
At present, shes doing a lot of shamanic work with The Wheel of Time matrix the hit TV series has revealed certain things to her, and although shes not going with the Dragon Reborn stuff (thats a few thousand years out of date), she has a whole lot of new fateful information to pass on.
Okay.
So off I went to Fatas place of residence and work were all working remotely now, clairvoyants especially. She says she can claim a tax rebate on the area of her home that she uses for her work, though that is in fact all of her home, because her powers extend to the whole property. Actually, she confided to me, shed like to claim a tax rebate on the whole cosmos, because the whole cosmos is her workplace, but SARS doesnt acknowledge the cosmos yet.
Enough of tax matters. We leave that to SARSs mystic department, though some claim thats a rogue unit. Apparently the International Harry Potter Institute is looking into its credentials. In the meantime, we have Fatas look into our immediate future.
I went with specific questions, but Fata said she wasnt doing questions that day. (This was 1 January, and most people were braaiing without a thought for the future.) No, she just went into a prophetic trance and began to speak in the voice of her angel-demon-guide, known as Urizen, to tell me what lay beyond the time urizen I mean horizon.
Oooh, aaahhh, aaahh Thats Fata going into a trance. It took a while. Apparently she needs some strong drink to get into that trance state a double cane and Coke, actually.
So there were a few more ooohhs and aahhhs, some groaning, some writhing about on the floor (a special carpet woven with a representation of the key constellations), some more glugging from the cane and Coke, and we were away.
I see I see come on, Urizen, what do we see?
Her voice changed into a deep, rumbling basso profundo.
It is I, Urizen, and I see
Yes, I said anxiously, what do you see, Urizen?
Quiet, said Fata. Dont interrupt.
Sorry, I said, biting my tongue. That was painful.
I see, I see What do I see?
The basso profundo got even deeper and louder. The needle showing the recording function on my phone was jumping into the red, but I dared not adjust it.
I see four horsemen!
(Ah, I thought: the Book of Revelations was right!)
Er, actually, I should say four horsepeople
Theyre galloping around the wasteland, seeking whom they may devour So to speak. Galloping, gambolling
(I wanted to ask who they were, the four horsepeople riding the four horses of the apocalypse, presumably but it was as though Fata-Urizen could read my mind and she/he went on in that booming voice.)
Okay, the one at the back yes, on the brown horse, hes going slowly Hes an old man Hes going round and round in circles, laughing to himself Chuckling He goes He he he
(Right, I thought, we know who that is.)
And then theres another, near the back Looks like hes riding a donkey, actually it isnt entirely clear Theres a lot of fog here, or maybe its smoke. Dark, black smoke.
(Are we still, I wondered, in the world of The Wheel of Time? Sounds a bit more like the End of Time, as in Loki, the Marvel Universe spinoff series But, again, Urizen-Fata read my mind.)
All time is present in Time Present! cried Urizen, sounding like a bit more of a baritone for a moment. From the End of Time, I see all time But especially the next year or so that you asked about.
Okay, I whispered.
That old guy on the old donkey Hes also going round and round And hes shouting Coal! Coal! Burn! Burn!
(Must be Uncle Gweezy, I thought.)
Hes yelling: Green transition? My gouty foot! We got no green here! Just red! And black! Black smoke, oily black smoke! Let the world burn!
(Oh dear, I thought. But I didnt want to say anything.)
And there are another two horsepeople, said Urizen. And theyre going mad, going wild The one on the black horse is galloping towards us and she, yes, its a she she has the biggest, wildest hair in South African history! And bright pink gloves!
(Gosh, I thought, pink gloves? What could that mean? Is this the female version of The Phantom of the Opera?)
The biggest! The wildest! More hair than a lead character in The Lord of the Rings! And thats without the beard!
(Hang on, are we changing horses or horsepeople in midstream here? Are we switching fantasies? I thought this was a series But, again, Urizen read my mind.)
All fantasy movies and series are present in the mind of Urizen! But especially trilogies and eight-episode series! From the vantage point of the End of Time, I see all!
(Great, I thought. Well be in the DC universe next.)
And shes riding, and riding, and fire cometh from her great sword, which she holdeth in her pink-gloved hands! She crieth, F*ck the C*nstit*tion! F*ck the r*le of l*w! Shes raising funds from dodgy businesspeople and tenderpreneurs! And taxi mafia bosses! Not to mention charismatic preachers and funeral-parlour moguls! Someone has to pay the MK veterans! The presidential bid of the One with Enormous Hair and Pink Gloves will not be cheap!
(I started doing some maths, based on the projected figures of the CR22 campaign, but Urizen was booming along.)
And theres another horse a white horse! Could it be the plague? The white horse is ridden by someone with many names except they are all the same name. Im getting an M and another M Moo Moegoe Mogoeng Mogoeng Mogoeng
(The world seemed filled with echoes going Mogoeng, Mogoeng, Mogoeng I felt a shiver down my spine.)
He rideth the white horse, and he shouteth! He curseth the 666, the Mark of the Beast, that shall infiltrate the very DNA of each person and inscribe them with the devils mark, never mind a hefty bill from your neighbourhood G5 provider!
Urizens voice grew louder:
He cometh like a prophet! [Oh dear, is my job at stake?] But he cometh, and he cometh! He is unstoppable! He sweepeth all opposition aside! He is the new Lord of All! And the people shall pick up their hoes and pangas, and they shall follow him to the ends of the Earth! Or at least to the ends of the landmass Except he may soon invade Zimbabwe! And Botswana! And he shall preach the Gospel of the Anti-666 and he shall rule forever!
Wait, wait, I stammered, terrified. I dont understand. Is all this going to happen in 2022? The pink gloves I get, and the others, but Mogoeng? Hes a retired judge. How can he ?
But Fata had fainted. And Urizen was silent. DM168

Zepp is Funk Dave Watts Birthday Party Turned Benefit MUSICFESTNEWS – Music Fest News

Zepp is Funk Dave Watts Birthday Party Turned Benefit
It started out as a birthday party show. On December 30, it became a benefit performance.
Zepp is Funk, a Funked-Up Tribute to Led Zeppelin, is the name of the Dave Watts birthday party scheduled for February 5 at Cervantes Other Side in Denver, stacked to the rafters with great players (and many more likely to join in). Watts is the drummer of The Motet, a band he founded in 1998. Since then, the band has played to millions of fans.
Watts world, and that of his family and friends and thousands of people in Superior, Colorado, was ravaged by the Marshall Fire December 30. Most people lost everything as the fire ripped through the area with hurricane winds in excess of 100 mph. Since that time, there have been numerous benefit shows around the area and across the country in support of those who lost their homes. Some of those have been specifically for Watts, Danielle Nicole Gregory, MC PK Williams, and their family.
Recently, Watts post this photograph and message about how the drummer community has selflessly pitched in to help him. The Motet just finished a run of shows in Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
And, as you might expect, the birthday celebration will also be a benefit show. And what a show it will be! The musicians listed for the show include: Jason Hann (The String Cheese Incident), Joel Cummins (Umphreys McGee), Shawn Eckels (Andy Frasco & The U.N.), Todd Smallie (JJ Grey & Mofro), Tony Tyler (Tony Tyler Trance), Gabe Mervine, Kim Dawson (Matador! Soul Sounds), Nick Gerlach, and Mark Wilkolak. And you can bet there will be twice as many in the audience.
Want to help? There is a GoFundMe set up for them.
And another benefit coming February 4:

Celtic Connections review: Dallahan and Stundom, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall – The Scotsman
Posted: at 10:18 am
Dallahan and Stundom, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall ****
Dallahan are the sort of well drilled yet intuitive outfit who in another, kinder year could set the Celtic Connections Festival Club alight. However, with all (official) late night merriment cancelled at this years festival, this dynamic quartet had to get the party started in the pristine environment of the no-drinks-allowed new auditorium of the Concert Hall in front of an audience who were keen to go with them, and clapping optimistically from the start.
With a line-up comprising singer-guitarist Jack Badcock, who led on the mellow ache of an original heartbreak number, accordionist Andrew Waite, banjo and mandolin player Ciaran Ryan and fiddle prodigy Benedict Morris (the utterly undaunted new boy), they often sounded like a folk band playing rock tunes which were then spiced up with characterful instrumental passages and juicy opportunities to show off solo chops.
Their self-styled world folk sound was showcased by the gypsy freedom of a fiddle-accordion pas de deux which must have made their cosmological trance set inspired by Carl Sagan their out-of-this-world folk sound and by the time they hit their closing set of propulsive reels, this ensemble were positively zinging.
Thankfully, in all the uncertainty and restrictions, an international element to the festival has been preserved.
Copenhagen trio Stundom returned to Celtic Connections following their 2020 debut, offering a gentler class of jig than the headliners. However, fiddler Emma Elme, pianist Julian Svejgaard Jrgensen and cittern player Villads Hoffmann had some distinct tricks up their sleeve.
Their homage to cycling (downhill) captured a sense of freewheeling release, their affectionate tribute to the rollercoasters in Denmarks vintage amusement parks slightly less so, and they will almost certainly be the only act at this years festival to incorporate the enchanting tinkle of an antique music box in their set.

Opinion | Iowa Republicans need to focus on real issues rather than patriotism – UI The Daily Iowan
Posted: at 10:17 am
Politicians need to focus on issues that have an impact on Iowans lives, not enforcing the pledge of allegiance.
Yet again, Iowa Republicans are introducing harmful and unnecessary bills in the Legislature.
In an effort to uphold blind patriotism, Sen. Adrian Dickey introduced a bill that would require teachers to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Teachers would also be barred from talking about the pledge in an unpatriotic manner. The only exception is if the teacher has a disability that prevents them from standing and reciting the pledge.
This bill infringes on the freedom of speech of teachers and enforces the harmful censorship that has been used to erase marginalized identities.
Besides the freedom of speech and censorship concerns, teachers respecting the pledge doesnt even seem to be a problem in Iowas public schools.
Without any legislation in place, we started every morning with the Pledge of Allegiance when I was in elementary school. Most students stood and mindlessly recited the words. However, some students did not due to religious beliefs. Nevertheless, it was a daily practice that my teachers never commented on, and students paid very little attention to.
This is not the first time in recent Iowa history that Republicans introduced a bill about the Pledge of Allegiance. At the end of last years legislative session, a bill was passed that required schools to present the flag and require the school to recite the Pledge of Allegiance every day.
Ultimately, students cannot be forced to recite the pledge because of their right to free expression. This was established in 1943 with the Supreme Court ruling case, West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette.
Because it is established that students cannot be forced to recite the pledge, why would teachers be any different? In fact, this bill takes these free speech infringements a step further by censoring the language used surrounding the pledge.
Instead of improving the public school system in Iowa, this seems to be another attempt to uphold conservative ideas of patriotism, which often means erasing minority voices.
Through this proposal, teachers would not be allowed to say any unpatriotic commentary on the United States, or language that has any political influence on students. Along with possible infringement on free speech, this bill is further complicated by how we view patriotism.
Republicans have made attempts left and right to censor teachers. However, it all seems rooted in the same silencing of minorities. Bills were put into place last year to bar teachers from teaching the 1619 Project in schools because of concerns it is not historically accurate and misrepresents the values of America. Iowa schools are also facing increasing attention and possible bans of several books being taught, mostly ones highlighting minority experiences, such as The Hate u Give, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian.
The abundance of censorship and backlash when it comes to language or teaching that involves minority experiences suggests this legislature is not about protecting students its about continuing to erase and censor certain identities.
Censoring the language teachers use about the pledge is a step in the same direction, attempting to control unpatriotic language in the classroom. But what do we define as unpatriotic, and who is creating these definitions?
It seems Republicans focus is less about unifying the country and more about making sure certain ways of thinking about America are controlled. This is being done through book bans, attempting to erase the 1619 Project, or controlling speech surrounding the pledge. Conservative powers are infringing on what information can be shared or spoken.
Classrooms can be powerful places to grow through education. Instead of investing in bettering the education system, Republican senators are focused on censoring language and upholding their definition of patriotism.

After months of mounting pressure from numerous Jewish organizations and leaders, the University of Southern California has announced measures to help combat the alarming antisemitism that has created a hostile environment for many Jewish and pro-Israel students on its campus.
USCs announcement comes on the heels of an uproar over the universitys failure to adequately respond to virulently antisemitic and threatening tweets from a USC graduate student, which included, I want to kill every mother fking Zionist, Zionists are going to fking pay and yel3an el yahood [curse the Jews]. This was just the most recent example of the anti-Zionist motivated harassment of Jewish and pro-Israel students. In 2020, a pro-Israel Jewish student government vice president felt compelled to resign her position following a relentless social media campaign to oust her from office, which included such comments as impeach her Zionist a and it warms my heart to see all the Zionists from USC getting relentlessly cyberbullied [smiling emoji].
The Jewish community deserves kudos for getting President Carol Folt and the USC Board of Trustees to commit to addressing the problem, including through the establishment of an Advisory Committee on Jewish Life and ensuring Jewish representation in DEI efforts. These are hopeful first steps. However, to make significant and lasting change, there is more to be done. Most importantly, the university must acknowledge and address the underlying nature of the problem: the unacceptable double standard when it comes to the universitys response to the harassment of Jewish and pro-Israel students.
This double standard was summed up nicely by Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, when he posed the question many in the Jewish community have been wondering: If [similar social media] comments were made about Black students, what would the schools response be? Almost no one doubts USCs response would be fast and furious, and not necessitate months of mounting pressure.
By now, this double standard is well known on campuses across the country. The anti-Zionist motivated verbal harassment of Jewish and pro-Israel students is generally treated as free speech and ignored or downplayed by school administrators, while similarly harassing speech directed at other minority groups is addressed promptly and vigorously, with the harassers duly disciplined.
What is less well known is that this egregiously unfair double standard finds its source in campus harassment policies.
What is less well known is that this egregiously unfair double standard finds its source in campus harassment policies.
Take USC, for example. Its Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation opens with, University of Southern California believes all members of the university community should pursue their work, education, and engagement in University programs and activities in a safe environment, free from discrimination and harassment. So far, so goodjust what every USC parent wants and expects to hear.
But if parents were to read just a tad further, many would become rightly alarmed. For while the university professes that all students should be free from harmful behaviors that threaten their safety or deny them opportunities to fully participate in their college experience, the schools policy only affords protection to victims of discrimination and harassment based on protected characteristics.
What this means is students who dont fit into certain identity groups cannot rely on any of the policys protections, even if they fall victim to behavior that exceeds the policys threshold for hostile environment harassment.
Granted, the list of protected identity groups is quite long, and many students will easily find their niche. But for Jewish students experiencing anti-Zionist motivated harassment, its not so simple. And not just at USC.
While all school harassment policies include religion as a prohibited characteristic, and most, such as USCs, also include ethnic origin or ethnicity, Jewish students who fall victim to harassment motivated by their support for Israel are often not covered by these policies, since many administrators do not consider support for Israel an expression of a Jewish students religious beliefs or ethnicity. And despite recent efforts by Jewish students and communal organizations to get schools to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, which includes examples identifying anti-Zionist rhetoric as antisemitic, most administrators are hesitant to do so, fearing growing pushback from anti-Zionist students and faculty.
To make matters worse, the unequal treatment of pro-Israel students is compounded when it comes to freedom of speech and academic freedom.
Although most universities proudly advertise their firm commitment to protecting their students freedom of expression, these same schools carve out an exception for the verbal harassment of protected groups, which is not considered free speech and will be subject to punishment. USC, too, makes a free-speech exception for protected-class verbal harassment, but it is one of the few schools to offer a reasonable justification for it, suggesting that harassing conduct is itself a suppression of expression: [W]hen harassment is committed against students it threatens their academic freedom.
Well, of course it does! The Supreme Courts definition of harassment, which USC and almost all schools incorporate into their harassment policiescalling it verbal, physical, written, electronic, or other conduct [that] is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it unreasonably interferes with, limits, or denies that individuals ability to participate in or benefit from the Universitys educational program or activitymakes it crystal clear that such conduct does indeed deprive its victims of freedom of expression. So, kudos to USC for pointing out the obvious, that a students right to express him or herself should be vigorously protected unless that expression tramples on another students freedom of expression.
Except thats not how it works at USC or on most other campuses for students who arent members of a protected identity group. Their right to be protected from verbal harassment does not outweigh their harassers right to free speech. This is a double whammy for pro-Israel students: not only are their harassers afforded free speech protection that is, in effect, license to continue verbally harassing them, but their own freedom of speech and academic freedom are diminished by the harassment.
This is a double whammy for pro-Israel students: not only are their harassers afforded free speech protection that is, in effect, license to continue verbally harassing them, but their own freedom of speech and academic freedom are diminished by the harassment.
Which brings us back to USC and its newly announced efforts to address campus antisemitism.
In order for these efforts to succeed, they must include an acknowledgment of the elephant in the room, namely, the gaping inequality between protected and unprotected students in USCs harassment policy and its profound impact on student safety and freedom of expression. They must also commit to expanding the schools policy or establishing a new one that will apply the same stringent standard of protection from harassment prescribed by federal and state law to all students at the University, not just some.
Once USC can guarantee that all students are equally protected from the harassing behavior that threatens their safety, squashes their self-expression and prevents them from fully participating in campus life, they will have gone a long way to creating a welcoming and healthy campus climate not just for Jewish and pro-Israel students, but for all students.
