After Scotto mentioned Bostons interest in him, Yossi Gozlan also tipped his hat to Smith on the podcast, saying how he made some much needed progress and the most of his big minutes in the last few weeks.

But despite the growing intrigue around Smith, a deal remains unlikely to occur since Phoenix declined his team option earlier this year. If a team were to trade for Smith, his contract which the Suns neglected to extend would transfer over with him, set to expire this summer all the same.

That puts any team looking to add Smith this year at risk of losing him just a few months later, tanking his value despite his improved play. With that understood, the Suns would likely get low-ball offers for him, hence why we argued against trading Smith last week.

On the podcast, Gozlan agreed, saying the following:

If youre a team that likes Jalen Smith, why would you trade for him? Youd be putting yourself at risk of losing him next offseason, and if another team offers him more than what he was supposed to make, then you could very easily lose him.

So put simply, trading Smith anywhere, including Boston, bares only minimal rewards for the Suns. Although young piecesAaron Nesmith orPayton Pritchard remain valuable players which the Suns might, they still hold more value than Smith with Boston having picked up their team options.

At the end of the day, this trade rumor and its lacking momentum blatantly reflects a rare failure for the Phoenix front office. If they picked up Smiths option, all these deals become feasible rather than pipe dreams.

Phoenix still remains well positioned at the blackjack table, owning the NBAs top record and with Stix around as a rental this year. But they still mismanaged his contract, and will not be hitting any jackpot trades as a punishment.

The states largest non-tribal gambling operator went to court Tuesday to try to overturn the monopoly on sports betting that the Legislature awarded to Washington States 29 Native American tribes.

The lawsuit filed by attorneys for Maverick Gaming in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, argues that Washingtons 2019 law authorizing sports betting only at tribal casinos is an erroneous application of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

IGRA essentially allows tribes to offer any form of gambling that is otherwise offered in the state containing an individual tribes land. Most commonly, the law was initially interpreted to allow casino-style games such as blackjack, craps, and roulette because such games were allowed at charitable casino nights. In Washington, it was also interpreted to allow slot machines because the state operates a lottery, under a somewhat convoluted argument that slot machines can be designed to operate similarly to a lottery.

The 2019 law allows sports betting only on tribal casinos. But Mavericks lawsuit also seeks to upend the entire tribal monopoly on most forms of gambling, arguing that most of the games allowed at tribal casinos arent really available to non-tribal operators.

The lawsuit was filed in D.C. because tribes operate their casinos, including the new sportsbooks, under agreements with the state called compacts that must be approved by the Secretary of the Interior.

Maverick, a Nevada company that recently moved its headquarters to Kirkland, owns 19 of the 44 nontribal cardrooms in Washington State, which are currently limited to poker and variants of blackjack.
