GGRAsia Macau to have 6 casino licences, lasting 10 years: govt bill – GGRAsia

Jan 14, 2022 Newsdesk Latest News, Macau, Top of the deck

The Macau authorities announced on Friday some of the key aspects of a bill proposing a new regulatory system for gaming that will shape how the industry looks for years ahead.

Macaus Executive Council, an advisory body to the citys Chief Executive, stated that there would be a maximum of six concessions, under the government-backed bill. It would end the existing sub-concession model.

It added that the concession period would be a maximum of 10 years, but it could be extended by a further 3 years under exceptional circumstances. The existing six concessions due to expire in June covered a 20-year lifespan.

(Read the full press release from the Executive Council: Chinese version and Portuguese version).

Three of the current six operators namely Sands China Ltd, MGM China Holdings Ltd, and Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd were allowed into the market via a piece of legal improvisation. They actually hold their gaming rights via sub-concessions spun off from the three original concessionaires selected via a 2002 public tender. The three original concessions were the locally-incorporated units of Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd, SJM Holdings Ltd and Wynn Macau Ltd.

The freshly-announced bill is to be sent to the citys Legislative Assembly, to be voted on by its members. The length of time that procedure will take depends on the citys legislators, who can also propose changes to the bill.

During Fridays press conference (pictured), the Executive Council spokesperson, Andr Cheong Weng Chon (pictured centre), admitted the Legislative Assembly could take some time reviewing the bill. He said the Macau government would consider extending the duration of the existing concessions in order to provide lawmakers with enough time to complete the review process.

More details on the matter would be disclosed at a later stage, said Mr Cheong, who is also Macaus Secretary for Administration and Justice.

The government has said previously Macaus gaming law needs to be updated as a linked issue to a fresh public tender process for Macau gaming rights.

The bill also states that the firm actually holding the casino concession would only be allowed to have up to 30 percent of its shares listed publicly. That was in order to ensure a more stable relationship between the concessionaire and Macau, stated a press release from the Executive Council.

None of the current Macau casino firms listed either in Hong Kong or the United States, directly owns its respective Macau licence. That is done via an affiliate.

The Macau government had previously suggested a need to approve dividend distribution to shareholders by the citys casino operators. The proposal was included in a government document regarding the revision of the citys gaming law, published in September for public consultation. There was no reference to such proposal in Fridays press conference.

No changes to taxes

Mr Cheong additionally stated there were no plans for tax hikes regarding the gaming industry. Macau taxes the gross gaming revenue of Macau casinos at a rate of 35 percent, but other levies on casino gaming gross raise the tax rate to 39 percent in effect.

According to the summary of the bill, the Macau government has dropped a proposal to appoint delegates to Macaus gaming concessions, that would have monitored the operation of the gaming firms. Instead, the local authorities would strengthen other channels of supervision, said Mr Cheong.

A delegate system is already used in Macau to monitor other forms of public concession. But the idea of applying the system to the gaming sector had attracted a lot of comment during last years public consultation.

Macaus existing gaming law requires that at least 10 percent of the gaming concession entitys share capital has to be held by a managing director who is a Macau permanent resident. The bill now presented suggests upping that shareholding portion to 15 percent.

The government-backed bill all states that, among the main goals of casino concessionaires, are promotion of national security, as well as Macaus economic diversification, and the citys sustainable development.

Asked by a reporter, Mr Cheong did not clarify whether the reference to national security meant Chinese-backed firms would be favoured in a future tender for fresh casino concessions. He said all firms meeting the relevant criteria to be set by the government for the new tender, would be welcome to present a proposal.

Other government suggestions featured in the bill, include the need to increase the minimum share capital requirement for any local casino concessionaire to MOP5 billion (US$625 million) from the existing MOP200-million threshold.

A number of commentators had said prior to Friday, that the likelihood of a prompt announcement on the future of the industry had increased due to the release before Christmas of the summary results from the public consultation held in the autumn.

Hard Rock leads in Indiana for the third month in a row with December’s $32.4M revenue – Yogonet International

Posted: at 8:10 am

The Indiana Gaming Commision (IGC) reported Wednesday that Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana had the highest earnings in the state for the third consecutive month, once again surpassing Horseshoe Casino in Hammond for revenue after paying successful bettors.

Hard Rocks win from slot machines and table games totaled $32.4 million for the month, a 5.7% increase compared to its November win, and 9.25% more than Horseshoes December win of $29.7 million.

As reported by the IGC, Hard Rock attracted $45.9 million in table game wagers in December compared to $30.5 million at Horseshoe. Baccarat was the biggest table game at both the Gary and Hammond casinos. But Hard Rock ($26.4 million) more than doubled up Horseshoe ($11.1 million) in baccarat play, and led in baccarat win with $5.8 million for Hard Rock and $1.6 million for Horseshoe.

Hard Rock was also ahead in blackjack play in December, with $8.4 million compared to $7.7 million at Horseshoe. Blackjack wins in December were $1.8 million, compared to $1.7 million for Horseshoe.

Horseshoe was ahead of Hard Rock on slot machine play, with $226.7 million versus $224.8 million; and win, which accounted for $22.9 million versus $21.9 million in December. This is due to the fact that Horseshoe has 20% more slot machines than Hard Rock on its gaming floor.

As reported by NWI, Matt Schuffert, president of Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, said he was pleased the casino had its strongest month yet in December: "Our table games business continues to perform extremely well, led by our strong baccarat business. We added over 50 additional slot machines to our floor in December, with nearly 100 more classic games coming soon."

Eric Ramsey, an analyst for PlayIndiana.com, explained: "2021 should be remembered as the year in which people fully embraced online sports betting, especially after a tumultuous 2020. As impressive as the year was, though, the market is not done growing."

Schuffert anticipates Hard Rock will maintain its lead over Horseshoe in the new year by continuing to offer entertainment including upcoming live musical performances by The Jacksons, Papa Roach and Clink Black.

According to the IGC, Ameristar Casino in East Chicago saw slot machines and table games win of $18.9 million in December, up 6.9% compared to November, while December win of $11.7 milloin at Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City was down 8.1% on a monthly basis.

Data show Indiana citizens also continued betting on sports in December, with Indiana falling short of a fourth consecutive month record for sports wagering handle. The IGC reported Indiana citizens bet $463 million on sporting events last month. That was nearly equal to the all-time monthly high of $463.7 million set in November.

Football and basketball together accounted for nearly 60% of Decembers sports wagers. Altogether, Indianas sportsbooks handled $3.8 billion in wagers last year, more than double Indianas 2020 sports wagering handle of $1.8 billion.

Ameristar Casino led the state for sports wagering handle last month, with $155.4, primarily through its DraftKings mobile sports wagering affiliate. Blue Chip ranked second with $121.1 million with FanDuel.

As for the state, records show Indiana in December collected $58 million in tax revenue from slot machine and table game play, and another $2.5 million from settled sports wagers.

This ‘free state’ has plenty of restrictions – Palm Beach Post

As I buckle my seatbelt, something I never did before the government mandated it, and stop dutifully at the corner, obeying a little red octagonal sign that dictates I must, I proceed to my favorite watering hole. At the end of the evening, after having one too many, I allow our designated driver to take me home, even though I feel perfectly able to drive. I accept these restrictions on my personal freedom willingly, because I realize they are for my own benefit and the public good.

Does our governor truly believe that masks do notlimit the spread of COVID? Or that unvaccinated Floridians are not a public health risk?I find it extremely disturbing that so many Americans, who as recently as five or six years ago would have readily accepted biomedical evidence as truth, now believe a set of alternative facts fed them by an extreme right-wing media, putting me and many Americans around mein danger.

I have been voting by mail ballot the last six years without incident. I mailed my ballot to the supervisor of elections over one week ago. OnElection Day, Jan.11, 2022, I received notice in the mail from Wendy Link, Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections, that the signature on my vote by mail ballot didnot match my signature on file with her office. My husband also voted by mail ballot and received the same letter. I signed my ballot with the identical signature I have used over six years. With alacrity, I rushed down to the voting precinct to vote in person, and was disenfranchised because I was advised I had to file a vote by mail cure affidavit, along with a copy of my identification with the supervisor of election, which I promptly did. I suspect voting fraud here.

Im glad to see that Biden has finally taken on Trump and his lies.Unfortunately, the truth is irrelevant to Trumps powerful base of supporters. They have found a messianic leader who can do no wrong. To this devoted base, the Big Liewill be supported against any fact that disproves it. They will also use any means necessary to restore their leader to power, including violence. If you are on a sacred mission, facts and truth are to be ignored. The ends justify the means. This is the danger our democracy faces. Are there enough Americans up to the task of preventing this?

With the COVID restrictions, legislation from the special session and now upcoming legislationto control what teachers can say, it seems Gov. DeSantis is acting like a socialist dictator by mandating what a business can and cannot do and what teachers can and can not say in a classroom. The Republicans really have to stop projecting their faults onto the Democrats. Every word out of their mouths against the left is a direct description of the thoughts and behaviors on the right. It is appalling how un-American they really are.

WW3 fears over Russias plot to justify Ukraine invasion as expert warns escalating tensions may spark ma… – The US Sun

Posted: at 8:08 am

RUSSIA'S reported plot to justify a Ukraine invasion has sparked World War 3 fears as an expert warns escalating tensions may trigger a major conflict.

Concerns are mounting after a US official reportedly revealed how intelligence suggests Russia has prepositioned a group of operatives to conduct a false-flag operation ineastern Ukraine in an attempt to create a reason to invade.

Taras Kuzio, an associate research fellow at Henry Jackson Society, told The Sun US that a "major war" may erupt and said the "crisis is likely to escalate before it de-escalates."

It comes as a US official told CNN that intelligence teams found evidence that the operatives are trained in urban warfare and in using explosives to carry out a disguised attack against Russia's own forces.

The claims were echoed by Ukraine's Ministry of Defense on Friday, saying Russian special services are preparing provocations against their own forces in an attempt to frame Ukraine.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan hinted at the report during a briefing on Thursday.

"Our intelligence community has developed information, which has now been downgraded, that Russia is laying the groundwork to have the option of fabricating the pretext for an invasion," Sullivan said.

"We saw this playbook in 2014. They are preparing this playbook again, and we will have, the administration will have, further details on what we see as this potential laying of the pretext to share with the press over the course of the next 24 hours."

On Friday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry told CNN that "the military units of the aggressor country and its satellites receive orders to prepare for such provocations."

Russian have continued to claim they will not attack Ukraine unless NATO guarantees it will never let Kiev join the US-led alliance.

Kuzio told The US Sun: "The last thing that NATO wants is for a war to spill over into member states. They want it to remain constrained in Ukraine."

He added that Putin has an obsession" with Ukraine and he will always be fixated on the country.

"Putin is president for life he cant leave office. Thats the way their system is. He knows that he cant trust the people around him theres no honor amongst thieves," Kuzio said.

He has an obsession with Ukraine he cant rebuild his empire without Ukraine. So he will always be fixated. Theres frustration and anger with the West, and he thinks its the West preventing Ukraine from coming back to Russia.

He always sees his war against Ukraine as part of his general war with the West. He doesnt separate them at all.

"You will have crises periodically throughout Putins presidency. When you have this kind of crisis, theres always a danger that things can escalate," he added.

Kuzio said that if a major war erupts - it could "feel like the 1980s again".

It depends on what Russia does in Ukraine. If it escalates into a full, major war, then whats going to happen is the Americans, Brits, Canadians are going to supply Ukraine with very good military equipment and itll be like the 1980s again," the expert said.

Some of that equipment like stingers will kill Russians. It will bring down Russian helicopters."

On Friday, thousands of Russian troops were seen taking part in combat drills on the border with Ukraine.

The exercises took place at the Kuzminsky and Kadamovsky training grounds in the south-westernRussianregion of Rostov Oblast, on the border with Ukraine.

According to The Russian Ministry of Defense, a total of over "2,500 servicemen of the Southern Military District took part in the combat training events, and around 100 T-72B3 tanks were involved."

Western intelligence officials believe that up to 100,000Russiansoldiers have been massed near Ukraine's borders.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Western countries had shared intel about Moscow military movement after the USwarned of a potential attack.

Zelensky said in a speech on his website: "I hope the whole world can now clearly see who really wants peace and who is concentrating nearly 100,000 soldiers at our border."

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry previously put the number of Russian troops near the border at 90,000 on November 3.

World War 3: Could Russia attack these former Cold War hit list targets including Portsmouth in event of WW3? – Portsmouth News

Posted: at 8:08 am

Ukraine is an aspiring member of NATO which includes the likes of the UK, USA and more.

An invasion of the country by Russia could flare tensions between the nation and the west.

However of course despite this the chances of WW3 remain extremely slim although the Doomsday Clock, which tracks the possibility of the end of the World, is at two minutes to midnight, the closest approach to midnight, matching that of 1953.

The News previously revealed a hit list of Russian targets in the UK in the event of a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union during Cold War.

Cold War predictions drawn up in secret by the British government reveal the extent of a Russian nuclear strike on the UK.

Portsmouth's Naval Base was on the list of target.

At the height of nuclear tensions in the 1970s and 80s, at least 38 towns and cities were feared to be at risk from a strike from the Soviet Union and Portsmouth was one of the key targets.

Dozens of army, navy and air force bases were also earmarked for destruction, with Portsmouth Naval Base topping the list of strategic targets.

The city is home to a majority of the Royal Navys fleet, as well as the Senior Services HQ where much of its top brass are located.

Bases in nearby Gosport and Fareham also house thousands sailors.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously made no secret of the fact he is willing to use nukes and relations between the UK and Russia have reached new lows over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal as fears of a new Cold War grow.

UK defence officials drew up a list of 106 locations they believed were a target for Russia marking them as probable nuclear targets.

Alongside these major population centres were 23 RAF bases, 14 USAF bases, 10 radar stations, eight military command centres, and 13 Royal Navy bases.

It is not known if the list of probable targets has changed since the Cold War.

Futurist Ayelet Baron Predicts the Future of Work and Life in 2022 and Beyond – PRNewswire

Posted: at 8:08 am

NEW YORK, Jan. 12, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- In a world where more and more people are not only working remotely but making life-changing choices, what will the future of work look like? According to futurist Ayelet Baron, "The organizational structures created in 1911 still serve as the foundation of many global companies. And, as they no longer serve where we are headed, people are questioning what work truly means in this century and making different life choices."

The global pandemic not only disrupted how we work, it also forced business leaders and employees to face a new reality. Many industries, including travel and healthcare, also dramatically changed the way they did business. While some crave going back to normal, we are at a unique point in human history where we face a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to imagine a healthier world of work where regenerative and sustainable practices set the foundation for businesses for generations to come.

The Great Questioning

Over the next few years, our relationship with life, and work, will change dramatically. We are experiencing The Great Questioning, not just the Great Resignation. There is an increasing number of people evaluating how valued they are from fair pay to working conditions to benefits and most importantly, quality of life. No longer waiting for someone to pick them, millions of people are choosing their wellbeing and questioning everything.

People, Planet and Impact

The most impactful shifts will come from small and medium businesses that have a shared purpose, operate with conscious leadership, and practice self-management. As more people seek meaning in their lives, they will look to align with organizations that focus on people, planet, and impact, or start their own. We will see an increase in entrepreneurs who will set the stage for what is next when it comes to work and life.

Dialogue and Connection Unlock the Future

The undercurrents of these shifts require business leaders to introduce timeless practices like listening and open dialogue as ways to build the trust that has been broken. 2022 is the year when walking the talk and closing the gap between words and actions will be what leaders will be asked to face. The art of conversation and connection builds trusted relationships and community, which are at the heart of authentic and conscious leadership and the key to future success.

Listening to People is Key

Many young people are choosing the freedom to navigate life; there is no interest in setting annual goals with an employer and checking in with a supervisor who tells them how they are progressing. And it's not just young people, the perks no longer outweigh the desire for choice when it comes to having a balanced, fulfilling life, which includes a career.

Ayelet Baron's predictions were included in the Thinkers360 2022 Future of Work series.

WW3 fears as North Koreas 2nd missile test in a week forces US aircraft to be grounded as protests erupt… – The Sun

Posted: at 8:08 am

ALL aircraft in Southern California were ordered to remained grounded on Monday reportedly due to another North Korean missile test - the second in a week - as protests erupted in Japan over the launch.

Flights at Sacramento International Airport and San Francisco International Airport were briefly ground, as confirmed by the airports.

The planes were halted for about five minutes. An on-duty manager at SFO said it was a nationwide issue.

North Korea appeared to test fire their second ballistic missile in less than a week. South Korea and Japan condemned the launch.

South Koreas Joint Chiefs of Staff said the suspected missile launch was detected around 7:27am GMT from an inland area of North Korea.

An emergency meeting was held by South Koreas National Security Council, where strong regret was expressed about the missile test.

Members of the NSC urged North Korea to swiftly respond to the international communitys expectations for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, and agree to resume dialogue and cooperation, said the Blue House in a statement.

North Korea claimed to have tested a hypersonic missile on Wednesday, underscoring supreme leader Kim Jong-uns vow on New Years to strengthen the military after talks with South Korea and the US had stalled.

If the projectile followed the trajectory of a normal ballistic missile, it would have flown less than 435k miles [700km], said Japans defense ministry.

This is similar to the recent tests of short-range ballistic missiles by the elusive country.

The South Korean military is cooperating with its allies in the US and closely monitoring the situation with their neighbors up north in preparation for future launches.

North Korea is attempting to use repeated tests to normalize its missile capabilities, said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor of international studies at Seouls Ewha University.

Easley said the country is trying to portray itself as being engaged in improvements for self-defense.

At the same time, Pyongyang is challenging international sanctions, testing what it can get away with while the United Nations Security Council remains divided, he said.

After last weeks missile launch, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called the incident regrettable while speaking to reporters.

The most recent launch came just a day after the United Nations issued a joint statement condemning the previous test.

These actions increase the risk of miscalculation and escalation and pose a significant threat to regional stability, said US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield in a statement on Monday.

Such tests only improve the Norths capabilities, but expands what it can offer illicit arms clients and dealers around the world, she added.

A Huge Volcano Is Creating a New Island in the Pacific Ocean in Real Time – Futurism

Posted: at 8:08 am

"Imagery captured the first clear view of the new island structure..."New Lands

Following a massive undersea volcanic eruption near the Pacific island nation of Tonga, authorities are trying to establish contact with residents and assess how badly homes and property were damaged. The world is holding its breath as authorities say theyre not sure whether there will be any casualties, but the blast also draws attention to a fascinating geological drama: the volcano is actively adding new land mass to a small and newly formed island. In other words, were seeing the growth of a new island in real time.

In 2015, the same undersea volcano erupted and formed a new island, although according to satellite imagery company Planet Labs, scientists thought it would erode away within months. Seven years later, however, the opposite is true. That same island has been growing and almost certainly got bigger during the weekends recent eruption. In fact, just last month a smaller eruption increased the size of the island by what experts believe to be nearly 50 percent.

Imagery captured the first clear view of the new island structure on 2 January 2022, Dan Slayback, a research scientist at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, told Planet Labs. Comparing PlanetScope imagery from mid-December, before the most recent eruption began, the surface area of the island appears to have expanded by nearly 45 percent due to ashfall.

In 2015, the Sydney Morning Heraldreported that surprisingly, life was abundant on the newborn island. Gulls and other seabirds floated in the air and padded around the volcanic shore, which has since been named Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Haapai.

Its mind-blowing to think about a baby island being born and growing in real time, but a lack of internet and satellite connections also mean it may be harder to study it and check on the wellbeing of nearby island residents for some time. WaPo reports that in 2019, Tonga lost internet connection for two weeks after its underwater fiber optic cable that delivers internet service was severed, possibly by a ship dragging an anchor across it. Residents couldnt even make international calls.

Were sure to learn more about the new island in the coming weeks, but were just as concerned about Tonga and its people. Lets hope people arent distracted by the geological news and forget the humans affected most by the disaster.

CEO OF THE YEAR 2021: Dan Pathomvanich wants to feed the world and save the planet

Dan Pathomvanich is not just a CEO. He's also a climate change activist and a plant-based advocate committed to enabling the world to transition to a lower-carbon future through food system transformation.

That explains why his company, NR Instant Produce Public Company Limited (NRF), is focusing on the global production of low-carbon foods and on transforming into the world's leading co-manufacturer of alternative protein ingredients and foods.

His business journey started when he established Hatton Capital in 2009.

Since then he has completed more than US$1 billion (33.5 billion baht) in acquisitions primarily focused on the consumer and food industry.

He went on to co-found Hatton Equity Partners (Thailand) in 2015, a fund with over $40 million in assets under management.

A new and more challenging chapter of life began when Hatton acquired NRF in April 2017.

A leading specialty food exporter based in Thailand, NRF was established in 1991 and with over two decades of experience developed into a leading food co-packer for supermarkets around the world with beloved brands such as Por Kwan that dominate ethnic supermarkets in North America.

In 2017, Mr Dan laid out a roadmap for the company over the next three years to become a global platform for the future of food in seeking to find solutions on how to feed 10 billion people by 2050 and decarbonise the world in doing so.

Central to this mission was to transform NRF's small plant-based business into a global co-manufacturer for alternative protein ingredients and foods which would enable the global economy to shift to a lower-carbon system.

Dan Pathomvanich.

The goal is by 2024 to have key production facilities around the world to co-manufacture plant-based foods, alternative protein ingredients and retail outlets selling plant-based products.

In order to achieve such a goal, Mr Dan in 2017 committed to the United Nations Global Compact by integrating the UN sustainable development goals into NRF core operations.

As a pro-active partner of the Global Compact Network Thailand, he was named to the committee on environment. NRF today is the first and only carbon neutral certified food factory in Thailand.

Within three years, Mr Dan led NRF to an initial public offering in October 2020 and had the second-best IPO opening of the year that was more than nine times oversubscribed by institutions.

Today NRF is the only public company to commit to the 1.5C climate pledge and the race to net zero.

Mr Dan was recognised by Time magazine, Bloomberg, Forbes, CNN and many international media publications for NRF's global vision to transform the world through food system transformation.

Besides serving as CEO of NR Instant Produce, Mr Dan also wears many different hats as chairman of Nove Foods, chairman of the Path Foundation, executive adviser to Proterra Partners, adviser to Foodshot Global while he is on the environmental sub-committee of Global Compact Network Thailand for the United Nations.

Turns Out Schrdinger, the Father of Quantum Physics, Was a Pedophile – Futurism

Posted: at 8:08 am

A recent investigation that resurfaced damning evidence that famed physicist Erwin Schrdinger was a pedophile is continuing to make waves in the academic community.

Schrdinger, widely cited as the father of quantum physics and perhaps best remembered for his 1935 thought experiment Schrdingers Cat, was widely revealed to be a pedophile by The Irish Times after the newspaper published a report detailing his record as a sexual predator and serial abuser.

Its a stomach-churning revelation about a researcher whose work revolutionized the study of the natural world and even led directly to todays international research frenzy into quantum computing and which shows, once again, that even the powerful and brilliant can be monsters.

The Irish Times identified young girls who Schrdinger became infatuated with, including a 14-year-old girl whom the physicist groomed after he became her math tutor.

Schrdinger, who died in 1961, later admitted to impregnating the girl when she was 17 and he was in his mid-forties. Horrifyingly, she then had a botched abortion that left her permanently sterile, according to the newspaper.

Perhaps most diabolically, the physicist kept a record of his abuse in his diaries, even justifying his actions by claiming he had a right to the girls due to his genius.

Walter Moore, author of the biography Schrdinger, Life and Thought published in 1989, said that the physicists attitudes towards women was essentially that of a male supremacist. Disgustingly, the biography seemed to downplay and even romanticize his abusive habits, and describes him as having a Lolita complex.

Schrdinger also attempted a relationship with a different 12-year-old girl, disgustingly writing in his journal that she was among the unrequited loves of his life. However, he decided not to pursue her after a family member voiced their concerns that the physicist was a, you know, unrepentant abusive predator.

In response, a petition has been launched to change the title of a lecture hall at Dublins Trinity University thats named after him.

We can acknowledge the great mark Schrdinger has left on science through our study, and this petition does not wish to diminish the impact his lectures or ideas had on physics, the petition says. However, it seems in bad taste that a modern college such as Trinity would honor this man with an entire building.

Thats true, of course. You can recognize the contributions someone has had in their field while also acknowledging that they were an absolute scumbag.

Buthonoring them by naming a lecture hall or a giant space telescope is completely unnecessary.
