I learnt to come out of my shell and be heard – The Standard
Posted: January 9, 2022 at 4:01 pm
Joan Kabugu at the Standard group's offices along Mombasa road, Nairobi on December 30, 2021. [Elvis Ogina, Standard]
Having recently had her short film,Throttle Queensair onAl Jazeera,Joan Kabugu is counting her wins. Her journey has been one marked by highs and lows, but she has stuck to her passion. She is the founder of Ecila Films, which focuses on women, teens, and indigenous communities.Joan has many hours of TV content under her belt and has directed several environmental documentaries under the series,Giving Nature a Voice, and short films touching on heartfelt themes such as fatherhood and mental health. The creative is currently completing a multi-media documentary about a deaf dancer called. Sounds of Silence. She shares her journey.
Your short filmThrottle Queenjust aired onAl Jazeera. How does that feel?
Exhilarating, exciting and rewarding! I have come a long way from where it all began. The journey started 10 years ago when I stumbled onto a TV and radio training programme (in Medeva Media for Development in Africa). With no background in media, I had to work extra hard when I landed an opportunity on the job, training for a political talk show production. To get toMedeva TVfor the month-long training right after graduating from university, I had to walk from Nairobi CBD area to South B a distance of four kilometres - and back daily for almost a month because I had no source of income and the bus fare I had was not sufficient. I started from the bottom, labelling camera tapes, training on camera operations and assigned a camera for cutaway shots. Maisha Film Labs was another platform that helped me grow in my early years; I submitted two of my short films and got invited to compete for a production grant two years in a row. In second year, I won and went ahead to work on my first short film -Madam Chief- a mustard seed that allowed me to not only carry the writer credit, but also director and producer for the first time. My friends at Medeva came together to make the short film a success, I am forever grateful.
As a producer how have you managed to continually bag opportunities?
The biggest opportunities have come from learning. I have done this through attending workshops on writing, content creation fellowships and taking part in business and leadership training. These have made me understand the business side of things and how I can leverage my craft to make a living. When I attended the Obama Leaders Forum in 2018, Ecila Films was given a major spotlight for the work we have been doing; telling stories about women, teens, and the indigenous community. That has been our niche.
What have been some of the challenges this far?
I was recently having a discussion with fellow African creatives, trying to understand two phrases; love what you do and do what you love. This was against the backdrop that it takes a lot to make a living out of the creative industry and stick it out for the long haul. My toughest issue has been financing projects I care about, and convincing investors to come into the film space - it is hard to get a solid return on investment, unlike other industries. It has also been hard to gain traction and visibility, making it hard to reach my audiences both with my company Ecila Films and my personal profile.
How have you handled the challenge of having a steady stream of income?
Overtime, I have developed different skills and used them to multiply my revenue streams. The top three are; writing, directing, producing, and working as a production manager. I balance between doing independent content for my company, writing, and taking on production assignments. This ensures that as a creative I am not frustrated when it comes to finding jobs and paying bills.
Which have been your greatest highs as a producer?
Being part ofGiving Nature a Voice, which was an award-winning environmental documentary series. We won the bBest TV Series in ZIFF Awards. This series helped me improve my storytelling ability and took me to far corners of Kenya to find stories; from Cherengani to Bogoria to Rimoi. My first two short films were sponsored by grants and investors respectively. Working on three consecutive independent films after that, has been a proud moment; I have invested in myself. These projects have not yet offered a return on investment, they have, however, served as a portfolio for me and my team and opened doors for new projects, which have been sponsored.Winning an award for a Chevrolet project by Mofilm in 2015 was another proud moment, I did Richard Tureres Story;Lion Lights. In 2021, I won an award in New Yorks Oniros Film Award for the short film Its All A Game. I know the future holds even greater wins for me.
What have been some of your lowest moments?
I missed out on a few great opportunities earlier in my career because I felt inadequate. I have learned to be a loud introvert and get heard while communicating confidently and politely. Being able to work with people across the world from New York, Spain, Ethiopia and Liberia have expanded my worldview and by default made me more boisterous.
What have you discovered about yourself?
I am aggressive, which means that when I put my mind to something, I place all my cards on the table and go all in. I can take criticism; this makes it easy for me to put my work out there without fear of judgement. I am not a perfectionist, but I value exceptional excellence. That means I do not procrastinate in publishing what I want, I just ensure that I am growing in the process. I know how to plan and this has helped in saving money when it comes to film production. I rarely lose my cool, I keep the production team calm. While filming on location, ones patience is tested and I feel like I have passed that patience test every time. When it comes to working with a team, I believe in the leadership of self. If we all bring our A-game, it is a win-win situation.
What would you count as the rewards of pursuing your dreams despite the challenges?
The reward comes in getting the chance to create more content each year, working with a diverse cast and crew from Kenya and beyond and of course being paid to do so. Being nominated for awards has increased our visibility and assured us that we are being seen and appreciated. Something as simple as getting direct feedback for stories from our viewers whether in person, over the phone, or on social media is a big deal for me.
What next for Joan?
(2021 was) a defining year for me as a film-preneur. I have won a grant as an innovator from Stanchat Women in Tech, I also started my one film per month project beginning with a Lake Baringo Story Saving Pink Beauty,a coming of age story about a father and daughter. We recently had our first project featured onAljazeera-Throttle Queens- for their one of a kind series Africa Direct featuring exclusively African Stories by African Filmmakers. You can check it out on YouTube. These three highlights all point to one direction; creating more stories, consistently, and for an even wider audience.
The goal of Ecila Films is to create more authentic African stories with multiple teams, stories that transform communities and create discourse and dialogue. Making our content easily available on YouTube via our channel, Ecila Films and affiliate channels such asAljazeera, means we can have more people watch engage and dialogue. The plan is to also use our platform to launch new and upcoming storytellers and filmmakers, I know how hard it can be to break through in this industry. This is one way I can pay forward what I have benefited from other platforms.
What would you say is the importance of working towards consistent growth?
Continuous learning has made me understand different aspects of creativity, business, and leadership. I have been part of numerous fellowships, training, and workshops throughout my career: Amplify Content Creation Fellowship, Obama Leaders Fellowship, Maisha Film Labs Writers Workshop, Docubox Screenwriting Workshop, Young Africa Leaders Initiative, Women in Tech Business Incubator, Generation Africa Workshop, ZIFF Writing Workshop, Talent Campus Durban and One Fine Day Production Training, to name but a few.
I have found that consistency is the oldest formula in the book; keep at it, improve your craft, improve yourself. Improve and people will notice you before you know it, more people will be willing to pay for what you have to offer.
The other thing that has worked is becoming my own investor. I have save and foot the bill for some of my productions. Invest in the stories you love and share them with the world. Sometimes, the world needs to see you believe in yourself first before they believe in you.
In the last five years, I have worked a lot with mentors and this has allowed me to see my blind spots, personally and in the business of storytelling. I have also done a small portion of mentorship and it is something I hope I can do more of in the days to come.
Finally, there is no growth that comes from magic or presumption. All growth is intentional, and even if some opportunities find us as we work, such opportunities come because we are putting in the work to be bigger and better.
Plan out your 2022, even if you achieve only 50 per cent of what you set out to do. It is better than the five per cent you will achieve if you are not intentional about your growth.
Have an intentional New Year.

Game on between Biden and Trump as president appears to give first speech of the 2024 White House race – Fox News
Posted: at 4:01 pm
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
The starting gun in the next White House race doesnt fire for 10 more months, until after the 2022 midterm elections.
But President Bidens most muscular comments to date regarding former President Donald Trump - as Biden gave a much talked-about address inStatuary Hall marking the one-year anniversary of the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol - appeared to serve as a preview for a potential 2024 rematch between the two leaders.
The speech seemed to be a turning point for the president, who during much of his first year in the White House has directly avoided targeting his predecessor in office. But on Thursday, without using Trumps name, the president accused him of inciting the mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 in hopes of disrupting congressional certification of Bidens Electoral College victory in the 2020 election.
2021, THE YEAR THAT THE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL RACE IGNITED
"We must be absolutely clear about what is true and what is a lie. And here is the truth: The former president of the United States of America has created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election," Biden charged, as he pointed to Trump's repeated, unfounded claims that the 2020 election was "RIGGED" and "stolen" due to massive voter fraud.
"Hes done so because he values power over principle, because he sees his own interests as more important than his countrys interests and Americas interests, and because his bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy or our Constitution," the president argued.

And Biden emphasized that Trumps "done what no president in American historyhas ever, ever done: He refused to accept the results of an election and the will of the American people."
Stressing that Trumps "a defeated former president," Biden accused him of "trying to rewrite history." And looking ahead to what sounded like the next presidential election campaign, Biden pledged to "defend this nation. And I will allow no one to place a dagger at the throat of our democracy."
Trump, who canceled his originally planned news conference on Jan. 6, fired off numerous statements throughout the day.
The former president argued that Biden "used my name today to try to further divide America," labeling it "political theater."
And Trump claimed that the presidents speech was "just a distraction for the fact Biden has completely and totally failed."
WHAT TRUMP TOLD FOX NEWS ABOUT HIS 2024 TIMETABLE
Looking ahead to this Novembers midterms, when the GOP hopes to win back majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate, Trump said that "to watch Biden speaking is very hurtful for many peoplethis is an election year and MAGA Republicans should get elected and work with me to fix this horror."
After his address, Biden told reporters that he referred to Trump in his speech as a "former president" rather than directly name him because he "did not want to turn" marking the one-year anniversary of the attack on the Capitol "into a contemporary political battle between me" and Trump.
But in some ways, what Biden said on Thursday sounded like the opening shots in the next White House race.

Expect Trump to fire back when hes in front of cameras next weekend, as he heads to the crucial battleground state of Arizona to hold his first campaign style rally of 2022.
And then there were four
The Republican National Committee (RNC) has narrowed the list of contenders to host its 2024 presidential nominating convention down to four major cities.
Making the short-list are Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Nashville, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Salt Lake City, Utah. Milwaukee and Pittsburgh are located in crucial general election battleground states, while Nashville and Salt Lake City are located in reliably red states.

The RNC confirmed to Fox News that staff from their site selection committee will be traveling to the four finalist cities to survey the convention plans. And committee members will discuss the 2024 convention cities, as well as the nominating calendar and presidential primary debates, when the RNC holds its winter meeting, early next month in Salt Lake City.
The news of the four finalists was first reported by Politico.
Were seeing a lot less of Mike Pompeo
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says he dropped 90 pounds over the past nine months thanks to exercise and dieting.
Pompeo told the New York Post that he hit a tipping point in June when he stepped on the scale and saw that his weight was nearing 300 lbs. for the first time in his life.
The Fox News contributor, a former congressman from Kansas who served as CIA director and then Americas top diplomat during the Trump administration, traveled to all four of the early voting presidential primary and caucus states last year, sparking plenty of speculation hes mulling a 2024 White House run.

But the 58-year-old Pompeo said his weight loss isnt about any possible presidential run.
"The truth is, Im really getting ready for 2044 and hoping Ill be around in 2054," he told the New York Post, pointing to potential grandchildren. "My sons getting married in July, and I wanted to be healthier and be around for what I hope the Lord will bless us with as grandkids before too terribly long."

Late Night Is Thrilled Trumps Finally Listening to Someone – The New York Times

The solemnity of the day was in danger of being undermined by former President My Little Phony. Two weeks ago, he announced that at the time of the Capitol prayer service, he planned to deliver remarks doubling down on the big lie to counterprogram the remembrance events. Yeah, you cant let remembrance events go on without counterprogramming. The same reason at a funeral youve got to bring out an insult comic for the people who are glad the guys dead: [Imitating comic] John looks good. Its the first time Ive seen him stiff in years! Oh! His wife knows what Im talking about. Anyway, thats my time. His, too! Tip your pallbearers. STEPHEN COLBERT
It would be like Judas giving a speech to commemorate Good Friday: [Imitating Judas] Sure, its a sad day, but without me, none of this wouldve happened. The real crucifixion was on Nov. 3 Mary Magdalene knows what Im talkin about. Tip your Pharisees. STEPHEN COLBERT
Donald Trump is canceling an appearance and listening to advice from other people? Im worried about him. JAMES CORDEN
Republican senators said the press conference wasnt a good idea, so instead Trump will just spend a quiet day dancing to Y.M.C.A. at home. JAMES CORDEN
But according to The New York Timess Maggie Haberman, the real, real reason is that it was becoming clear he wasnt likely to get the live TV coverage he was hoping for. Well, that makes sense. Upstaging solemn events rarely gets good ratings. Thats why they canceled Dick Clarks Pearl Harbors Rockin Eve. STEPHEN COLBERT
In his statement regarding the cancellation, Trump referred to the insurrection as a completely unarmed protest and said he was moving the event from Mar-a-Lago to Arizona on Jan. 15.
Id like to point out that they were armed. And when did we start having to say unarmed protests? Protests are unarmed by default. Thats like saying: We had a lovely weekend. It was a totally bloodless cotillion. STEPHEN COLBERT
It makes sense that hes moving it from Mar-a-Lago to Arizona, considering their state motto: Arizona: Americas backup Florida. STEPHEN COLBERT
So, no press conference tomorrow, but Trump will speak at an Arizona rally on Jan. 15 instead, just as Martin Luther King Jr. would have wanted. JAMES CORDEN
Theres an update in the world of Covid: Everyone in the world has Covid. STEPHEN COLBERT
Speaking of, the C.D.C. announced that after you isolate for five days with Covid, you should take a rapid test if you have access to one. You can read more about it in this months issue of Unhelpful Advice magazine. JIMMY FALLON
Thats right, another update from the C.D.C. Even Dr. Fauci is like, Oh, I muted those months ago. JIMMY FALLON

WASHINGTON
Lucky countries have celebrations that remind their citizens of what binds them together think Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.
Unlucky countries do the opposite: They commemorate the divisions that drive them apart.
In Northern Ireland, Protestant militants march noisily on July 12 to remind the Catholic minority which side won the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbs march on Jan. 9 to assert their independence from the groups they fought in their countrys war.
After the U.S. Civil War, Southern states celebrated Confederate Memorial Day on a different date than the Norths Decoration Day; the holidays didnt merge until World War I.
Last week, with the anniversary of the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, the United States slipped onto the list of unhappy countries.
The day turned into a festival of national division not a single, unifying commemoration but three very different observances.
President Biden gave an unexpectedly fiery speech, blaming Donald Trump for inciting the mob that attacked the Capitol and for continuing to stoke the poisonous myth that the 2020 election was stolen.
The former president of the United States of America has created and spread a web of lies, Biden said. Hes done so because he values power over principle and because his bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy.
Predictably, Trump rose to the bait, issuing four angry statements from his exile in Mar-a-Lago, all renewing his spurious claims.
The Big Lie was the election itself, he wrote. The election outcome was the real insurrection, he said. And he accused the Biden administration of appalling abuse of political prisoners, an apparent reference to defendants held on federal charges after the riot a favorite cause of his fringiest followers, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
Caught in the middle were Republican leaders who know Trump lost the election but dont want to say so because it would enrage the vengeful former president.
They observed Jan. 6 by offering muddled statements that disapproved of the riot but blamed Democrats for politicizing the issue as if there were any way to avoid connecting the invasion of the Capitol to politics.
The actions of that day were lawless and as wrong as wrong can be, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) said. The problem now, he complained, is that Democrats are using it as a partisan political weapon.
Its a difficult straddle to execute, as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) discovered when he incautiously described the riot as a violent terrorist attack, a phrase he has used in the past.
Heresy! Cruz, who ran against Trump for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, was assailed by Trump supporters and subjected to interrogation by Tucker Carlson of Fox News. It was not a violent terrorist attack, Carlson insisted.
In a scene reminiscent of the show trials of Mao Zedongs China, Cruz promptly recanted his deviation from party doctrine.
It was a mistake, he said, referring to his statement, not the riot.
Lesson to other Republicans who seek reelection: Dont deviate from Trumps views, or you may be a victim of the GOPs own form of cancel culture.
Trump, who gloried in watching the mob rampage through the Capitol, doesnt appear to want the battle to end. And thats the chief obstacle to getting over the division that remains. Its not about whether sacking the Capitol was right or wrong; even McCarthy can answer that question accurately. Its whether the myth Trump used to rile up the mob his infinitely debunked claim that the election was stolen should be embraced or repudiated.
Thats not a debate that offers ground for compromise. Either Trump is right, and the current president of the United States is illegitimate or Trump deliberately set out to overturn a democratic election and is bending the rest of the GOP to his will.
So far, he appears to be succeeding, at least when it comes to radicalizing his party.
Thats why Biden, after months of pretending that Trump was no longer there, escalated last week.
We are in a battle for the soul of America, he said, reviving a slogan from his 2020 campaign. I did not seek this fight but I will not shrink from it, either.
Trumps continuing campaign to deny the presidents legitimacy no ground for compromise there, either left him little choice.
For a few weeks after Jan. 6, 2021, it was possible to hope that the trauma of the day might unify the country. That didnt happen; the ensuing year only confirmed our division.
The lesson of Jan. 6, 2022, is that Jan. 6 isnt over.

Tiffany Trump Skipped Dad Donald Trumps New Years Eve Party For a Ski Vacation With Her In-Laws – SheKnows
Posted: at 4:01 pm
Tiffany Trump is busy planning her wedding to financier Michael Boulos, but the couple took some time for a little rest and relaxation over the holidays. Instead of a typical Trump celebration with her dad Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, the duo decided to head to the French Alps with Michaels parents,Massad and Sarah Boulos, his older brother, Fares Boulos and Tiffanys mom, Marla Maples.
Michael shared a very glam photo of the two of them sitting slopeside at Courchevel, a luxurious French ski resort. Tiffany wore chic black sunglasses and a Tiffany-blue puffy coat with fur trim and a black fur hat (she looked like a ski bunny). Her fianc kept his winter gear simple with an all-black ensemble and reflective sunglasses. It doesnt look like Tiffany hit the slopes, but her mom looked like she had the time of her life with her future son-in-law and his family.
Maples sounded truly moved to be included in their vacation plans. Moments of fun captured in time! Ive learned that joy is the greatest commodity we have to share with others, she wrote in the caption of her photo dump. I am so grateful for this family and the special time of adventure, dreaming, laughing and praying together. Heres to everyone finding reasons to smile and more ways to share love! She even bonded with Michael and Massad for a top-of-the-mountain family picture.
Even though Tiffany made the move to Florida like her Trump siblings, she is rarely seen spending time with them. This holiday vacation with her future in-laws (and missing her dads annual New Years Eve party) might signal that shes ready to identify as a Boulos family member and it looks like shes bringing mom along for the ride.

Jan. 6 panel expects this month to ask Mike Pence to voluntarily appear – NPR

Hours after rioters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, Vice President Mike Pence listens after reading the final certification of the Electoral College votes cast in the 2020 presidential election.
Rep. Bennie Thompson, chair of the Democratic-led House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, says members expect this month to ask former Vice President Mike Pence to voluntarily appear.
Pence's role on the day of the siege has drawn close interest from the committee, as it examines then-President Donald Trump's actions that day, as well as in the days leading up to the attack. Trump had been pressuring Pence to step out of his ceremonial role and reject Joe Biden's election results in several key states.
Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, shared the timing plans for the Pence ask in an interview with NPR.
"I think you could expect that before the month's out," Thompson said.
He described Pence's appearance as critical, especially as the former vice president ultimately issued a letter before the Jan. 6 proceedings that said he would not step out of his ceremonial role.
"The vice president was put in a tough spot. The president was putting a lot of pressure on him to break the law, and he stood fast," added Thompson. "And because of his respect for law, there were people who came to the Capitol a year ago wanting to hang him. And so, if for no other reason, our committee really needs to hear what are his opinions about what happened on Jan. 6."
The committee is meeting next week behind closed doors and expects to firm up final plans regarding Pence and the voluntary ask then, Thompson said.
The effort comes as the committee moves into a new phase of its investigation, with a closer look into Donald Trump's inner circle and new public requests for voluntary testimony. In the last several weeks, the committee has asked that Fox News personality Sean Hannity and Republican Reps. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania and Jim Jordan of Ohio come before the panel.
None has signaled interest in doing so.
Thompson did not rule out more requests for other witnesses in Trump's inner circle, including daughter and former senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump.
"Look, we are absolutely open to anyone coming voluntarily to the committee," Thompson said. "If in fact we think somebody has information that as a committee we need, and getting a subpoena for that person's participation is important, then we will do it."
The committee has obtained information that Ivanka Trump tried to get her father to call off the riot several times that day, Thompson and other members have said.
"We have information that Ivanka did try to get the president to call off what was occurring at the Capitol. We don't have all the information. That's why we would love to have access to it," Thompson said.
Thompson said more details on Ivanka Trump's requests to her father regarding the attack are likely held within White House documents that are the subject of an ongoing legal fight. Donald Trump has lost several rounds in federal courts seeking to block the committee's access to a tranche of those documents and is now asking the Supreme Court to intervene.
"So we think once we have access to that, it will help clear up all the drips and drabbles of the information that we are getting," Thompson said.
The committee has issued more than 50 subpoenas, has interviewed about 350 witnesses, has received more than 45,000 documents and is chasing nearly 350 tips.
The committee is also assessing whether Donald Trump or others should be considered for criminal referrals for their actions tied to the siege. So far, the House has approved the committee's two criminal referrals for ex-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former strategist Steve Bannon.
Thompson said the committee is also working to issue "significant recommendations" for new legislation. This could include reforms to the Electoral Count Act or new penalties for obstructing an official proceeding, such as the certification of presidential election results.
"Because one of the dangers, as you know, is if the insurrectionists had been successful and gotten their hands on the ballots from the different states and destroyed [them]," Thompson said, "we would have had a constitutional crisis of no end."
The panel is in a race to wrap up its investigation before the November midterm elections this year, as Republicans could take back control of the lower chamber next year and shut down the probe.
Hearings to present those findings could be held by this spring or summer, members have said.

Private space flights are already a thing. But what about other commercial space-y things, such as space suits and maybe even space stations? The engineers of Axiom Space are currently busy developing spacesuits. And, in anticipation of their use, the privately funded infrastructure company is preparing to launch the first fully private crew to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2022. Axiom has long-term goals of establishing its very own commercial space station after that.
The commercial company tweeted about their spacesuits on November 23, 2021:
The 2022 lunar calendars are here. A few left. Order yours before theyre gone!
Axioms civilian mission, called Ax-1, is currently expected to fly in February 2022. On it will be three civilian passengers marking their first spaceflight: Larry Connor, Mark Pathy, and Eytan Stibbe. Itll be the fifth flight for retired NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, who will command the mission. The astronauts will spend eight days together on the orbiting laboratory to conduct several research experiments. And although the mission comes far too soon to feature the new spacesuits, it prepares the way for Axioms longer-term private station plans.
By 2028, Axiom plans to build and dock the first-ever commercial space station to the existing ISS. NASA granted access to Axiom in early 2020 to the forward port of the Harmony module of ISS, to which Axiom plans to dock its entire Axiom Orbital Segment. When the ISS reaches its retirement date, the Axiom Orbital Segment will detach and operate as a free-flying outpost. The first module could be launched in 2024, with the second, third, and fourth in 2025, 2026, and 2027, respectively.
Axiom also wants an airlock by 2027 to support spacewalks, otherwise known as extravehicular activities (EVAs). Hopefully, the company says, its new spacesuits will allow for infrastructure construction and maintenance in space. They would eliminate the cumbersome need to launch the modules from Earth in the way that previous stations have been built. In an interview with Space.com published December 23, Matt Ondler, Axioms chief technical officer, said that in-house suits could also attract new customers. He also said:
In many ways, the spacesuit is just like a space station. It has all the same systems and all the same things you worry about We discovered that a lot of our private astronaut customers would like to experience an EVA. So were trying to figure out ways to make that very safe and easy to do.
With its orbital plans in mind, Axiom aims to have the spacesuits ready by 2024. That timeline coincides with NASAs hunt for new spacesuits to be used in spacewalks, moonwalks, and tasks at its prospective Gateway outpost. NASA has said it will start awarding contracts in 2022, and according to Space.com, Axiom hopes to be in the discussion. Perhaps the spacesuits Axiom is building today will be worn by men and women on the moon during the Artemis era. Ondler told Space.com:
Having that capability in 2024 allows us to also partner with NASA and potentially be a suit provider for NASA
Kam Ghaffarian founded Axiom in 2016. Michael Suffredini currently oversees the company. Both are former ISS program managers. It has headquarters in Houston, Texas, and the company boasts of its workforce of experienced space travelers and recruited NASA personnel. It has made claims to offer up to two flights to the ISS per year as they align with flight opportunities as they are made available by NASA. As for Ax-1, each passenger is reported to have paid $55 million for a seat.
Bottom line: Axiom Space is a privately funded space company busy with a slew of plans centered around spaceflight. While developing commercial spacesuits, its also preparing to launch the first fully private crew to ISS in 2022, with the long-term goal of establishing a commercial space station of its own.

New batch of AstroPis relieve Ed and Izzy of duty on board the International Space Station – The Register
Posted: at 3:59 pm
A new batch of AstroPi computers are up and running on board the International Space Station (ISS), set-up by ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer.
The units were shown off in September 2021 and launched aboard a SpaceX Dragon 2 freighter atop a Falcon 9 rocket in December. They are to replace the existing AstroPi units "Ed" and "Izzy" which have resided on the ISS for six years.
Maurer spent yesterday afternoon on the ISS setting up the new kit, which consists of Raspberry Pi 4 Model B hardware, a 12.3MP camera, and a range of sensors.
Engineers will eventually be able to control the units from the ground and upload code submissions from the Mission Zero and Mission Space Lab programs. Both are aimed at getting young people interested in coding, with one teaching participants how to write a program to take a humidity reading and display a message (without swears) to the astronauts while the other is a more complicated team-based affair.
Pi supremo Eben Upton was unsurprisingly cock-a-hoop, telling The Register: "Almost exactly six years after the first Astro Pi units were set up by Tim Peake, we finally have new flight hardware on the station.
"With Raspberry Pi 4, and the 12-megapixel high-quality camera (not to mention some very expensive optics), these are much more capable devices than their predecessors. We can't wait to see what kids on the Mission Space Lab and Mission Zero programs are able to do with them."
Testing code on the ground using Raspberry Pi hardware might, however, present a bit of a challenge. Component shortages reported last year look set to continue.
Upton told us: "Resellers are pretty much completely destocked post-Christmas. We actually have a reasonable amount of Raspberry Pi 4 4GB inventory on hand (stuff that was made too late in December to ship in 2021) and this is starting to flow out to resellers now."
A quick look at Pi supplier The Pi Hut showed all memory configurations of the Pi 4 Model B sold out.
Other vendors reckoned more stock would be in during the coming weeks, but some are applying a limit of one unit per customer. Alternatives, such as the Pi 400, remain available.
Upton reckons the tightness of supply would continue for a while, although attributed it more to demand rather than a straightforward supply crunch, resulting in a large order backlog.
"Where the semiconductor shortage has hurt us," he said, "is that we've been unable to scale production up to service that backlog more promptly."

Biology and agriculture were the dominant research themes aboard the International Space Station on Thursday. Also, an Expedition 66 Flight Engineer is beginning a set of record-breaking milestones before returning to Earth at the end March.
NASA astronauts Raja Chari and Kayla Barron started work Thursday morning inside the Kibo laboratory module examining mice for the Rodent Research-18 study. The space biology experiment observes how microgravity affects the visual function and changes the retina. Barron transferred the mice back and forth into the Life Science Glovebox and restocked their habitats with food throughout the day. NASA Flight Engineer Thomas Marshburn took over the mice investigation during the afternoon.
Flight Engineer Matthias Maurer of ESA (European Space Agency) started his day with a hearing test for the Acoustics Diagnostics study. The human research investigation seeks to understand how sound levels on the station affect astronauts. Maurer then spent the afternoon setting up AstroPi computer hardware to promote coding and engineering education on Earth.
NASA Flight Engineer Mark Vande Hei photographed operations for the Plant Habitat-05 experiment that is studying cotton genetics. Space botany is an important area of study as NASA and its international partners learn to sustain healthy crews on long-term missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond.
As of Thursday, Vande Hei has lived in space continuously for 273 days, surpassing NASA astronaut Andrew Morgans record of 272 days which was set on April 17, 2020. He will go on to break three more NASA records before the end of his mission at the end of March.
Vande Hei, along with Roscosmos Flight Engineer Pyotr Dubrov, arrived at the station on April 9, 2021, and are staying on the station for 355 days. Cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, who has been aboard the station since October 5, 2021, will lead Vande Hei and Dubrov to a parachuted landing in Kazakhstan inside the Soyuz MS-19 crew ship on March 30.

Startup Will Store Precious Artifacts in Vault Aboard the International Space Station – Futurism
Posted: at 3:59 pm
The International Space Station is about to getan onboard art gallery and museum sort of.
As part of a freshly-inked agreement with NASA, a startup called Uplift Aerospace is planning to send all kinds of precious items from pieces of visual art to precious gems and artifacts that would normally live in museums to the ISS starting this year.
The venture is a bid to establish commerce in space, as the company put it in a press release.
Many of the items featured in a roughly locker-sized vault, which will range from rare coins and fancy jewelry to soft goods meant for space travelers on board the station, will be put on sale. Others will be destined for museums after they get back to Earth.
Youre not wrong if you think this sounds both lofty and complicated. In an interview with space artifacts publication collectSPACE, Uplift Aerospace CEO and president Josh Hanes admitted that the company hasnt quite worked out the logistics of getting these goods to the ISS in the second half of this year.
The idea is that well be able to showcase the items while they are on the space station, Hanes told the website, but were still developing the exact process of how that will be done.
Because nothing can happen these days without some connection to the blockchain, there will be a non-fungible token (NFT) aspect to the vault though in this case, the NFTs will act as membership cards for Uplifts Space+ community where they can access real-life space experiences, as collectSPACE put it.
Currently, NFTs do not have a lot of utility in the physical world, Hanes told the publication. Were trying to build that into them.
Those who buy Uplifts NFTs at a purportedly low price point will, according to the CEO, ultimately be able to enter giveaways for space flights or items destined for the vault. In the nearer term, theyll get to attend Space+ talks and get small items from the ISS such as mission patches.
Though the NFT bit does come off as a bit wonky, it nevertheless is a lot more tangible and, frankly, cooler than buying expensive computer-generated JPGs of apes.
The reason why we, as a company, have decided to create an NFT platform is because we truly believe that there is utility in NFTs and cryptocurrency in space applications for the long term, Hanes told collectSPACE. Our purpose in the long term is to facilitate commerce. We think it is a good infrastructural system for commerce between space and Earth.
And, unlike pedestrian digital goods like virtual Metaverse land plots or NFTs for jars of farts,at least this one involves a vault on the freakin International Space Station.
