Federal judge to hear case of Proud Boy alleged Jan. 6 rioter seeking release from jail | TheHill – The Hill
Posted: September 27, 2021 at 5:18 pm
A federal judge on Wednesday set a hearing to hear a request for release from lawyers of a Proud Boys member who allegedly took part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly set the hearing for Friday after lawyers forDominic Spaz Pezzola, 43, argued that his imprisonment is making it difficult for them to consult with him and to review potentially relevant evidence, Reuters reported.
AttorneySteven Metcalf said Pezzola's mother and common-law wife were willing to put up a family house to secure bail.
Pezzola, who is from Rochester, N.Y., was arrested in January on charges ofunlawful entry, destruction of government property and obstruction of an official proceeding. According to theU.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Columbia, Pezzola broke into the Capitol using a stolen riot shield andallegedly expressed a desire to kill Speaker Nancy PelosiNancy PelosiNorth Dakota Republican latest House breakthrough COVID-19 case Pelosi sets Thursday vote on bipartisan infrastructure bill Cheney says a lot of GOP lawmakers have privately encouraged her fight against Trump MORE (D-Calif.) and then-Vice President Pence.
He was later charged with conspiracyrelated to the incidentalong with other members of the far-rightProud Boys.
It is alleged that Pezzola and[William Pepe] took actions to evade and render ineffective the protective equipment deployed by Capitol Police in active riot control measures, including actions to remove temporary metal barricades erected by the Capitol Police for the purpose of controlling access to the Capitol Grounds, and the stealing and purloining of property belonging to Capitol Police," the Department of Justice said in January.
Michael Scibetta, a lawyer who was representing Pezzola in January, said Pezzola'slogical thinking was that former President TrumpDonald TrumpCheney says a lot of GOP lawmakers have privately encouraged her fight against Trump Republicans criticizing Afghan refugees face risks DeVos says 'principles have been overtaken by personalities' in GOP MORE hadinvited us down."

A White Supremacist Is Organizing Fight Clubs Across the US – VICE
Posted: at 5:18 pm
American white supremacist Robert Rundos last known whereabouts was Bosnia and Herzegovina, after he was kicked out of Serbia by local authorities back in March. Hes claimed to be on the no-fly list and has boasted that, as a result, it took him a few months to make his way from the U.S. to Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, hes waiting to find out if the Supreme Court will hear his last-ditch appeal to avoid jail time for federal rioting charges.
Though nobody knows where Rundo is, his latest pet projecta network of far-right, locally-operated MMA groups dubbed Active Clubsare cropping up in the U.S. and beyond.
Through his new organization, Will2Rise, Rundo has sought alliances with more-established outfits like the Proud Boys and Patriot Front by appealing to their glorification of masculinity, youth, white nationalism, and violence.
Two centralized Telegram channels for Will2Rise and Active Club gives Rundo and other leaders in the movement the platform to tout their highly-stylized, neo-fascist aesthetic through propaganda videos and images, many of which are generated through their own media outlet Media2Rise.
The main active club channel cross-pollinates propaganda from nationalist fight clubs around the world, such as images of muscled white men with their faces covered, doing pull-ups, boxing, or graffitiing white nationalist slogans or symbols. The channel also helps direct subscribers toward smaller, locally-focused channels that facilitate real-world meet-ups.
In Rundos own words from a blog post on Media2Rise, he wants Active Clubs to awake[ing] the racial bonds between kin through engaging in shared fitness activities, sweating, and bleeding together. He complains that Boy Scouts no longer teach boys to be men, and that fitness centers like the YMCA are far removed from white neighborhoods.
Rundo hopes to lure new recruits through the promise of belonging to something. This isnt unusual for extremist groups, explained Cynthia Miller-Idriss, author of the book Hate in the Homeland, and director of American Universitys Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab, who points to some of the slogans featured on T-shirts sold via the Will2Rise website.
Messaging that comes across in these nationalist expressions are also about aspirational qualities like solidarity, honor, courage, trust, loyalty, and brotherhood, said Miller-Idriss. I think thats a really important part of why people are attracted to these movements. People think it's just because of hate, but often they are attracted to the idea of being part of something.
For years, Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, has been a mainstay of the far-right in Europe, and Rundos made no secret of his admiration for key players in that scene. Hes close friends with Russian neo-Nazi football hooligan Denis Niktin, who co-runs Media2Rise and owns a neo-Nazi lifestyle brand White Rex. The two men record a podcast, broadcasted via their outlet, in which they cover the highs and the lows, from underground MMA events to FBI house raids. (When authorities searched Rundos home in 2018, they found a large framed portrait of Adolf Hitler.)
Experts say theres reason to be concerned about Rundos new strategy. He appears to have learned from some of the mistakes made through the Rise Above Movement (RAM), a white supremacist street-fighting gang that he founded in 2016 in Southern California. Like Active Clubs, RAM was building on the European far-rights emphasis on physical fitness and hyper-masculinity. Members of the group traveled at least once to train with the neo-Nazialigned Azov Battalion in Ukraine.
On multiple occasions, RAM members showed up at protests in California and at the violent Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville with their faces uncovered and brawled with leftists, which left Rundo and others open to criminal prosecution. With charges looming against Rundo and three other members of RAM in 2018, the young white supremacist fled to Central America, where he was later arrested by the FBI, and brought back to the U.S.
A judge dismissed the charges the following year, concluding that their activities were protected by the First Amendment. This year, a federal appeals court reinstated the charges. (He was briefly wanted by authorities, and then he bought time by appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court, who have not ruled on whether they will hear his case.)
Whereas RAM was a group, there is the claim of plausible deniability in the active club movement model, said Joshua Fisher-Birch, a terrorism researcher at the Counter Extremism Project. Rundo can tell people to go out and organize, train, and spread propaganda, but he is not necessarily the functional leader of active clubs around the country.
In a blog posted to his site, Rundo himself says he hopes to achieve a brush-fire effect by encouraging supporters to mobilize others in their communities and form their own Active Clubs. The system and media will waste tons of energy and resources to put out one small fire as another catches a spark elsewhere, he wrote. Even if the system and their dogs manage to put out one fire, it will lead to minimal results because these clubs are generally small and local, helping to shield it from infiltrators and broader law enforcement actions.
Whats more, when Rundo first created RAM, the modern far-right was still in its nascent stages. Five years later, right-wing extremism has spilled over into the mainstream. White supremacists, anti-vaxxers, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and MAGA devotees have commingled on alternative social media platforms like Telegram and Parler, or at protests against COVID-19 restrictions or the 2020 election results. Groups like the Proud Boys show up to mainstream political events and are cheered by the people there. And while bloody brawls between ideologically opposed groups may have made the national news back in 2016, these days casual political violence is just another weekend pastime in America.
A new report by Advance Democracy Inc., a public-interest research group, looked at how Rundo, through his media outlet, was hoping to tap into a broader base of possible recruits in the U.S. When the right-wing Parler app went offline in January, supporters of former President Donald Trump flocked to Telegram en masse, creating a feeding frenzy for the far-right extremists who already had an established presence on that platformRundo included.
Rundo seems to be attempting to expand his reach. Rundo has indicated that he sees many white, male Trump supporters as potential new recruits into militant white nationalism, due to the disillusionment and persecution they feel under the current U.S. administration and mainstream cultural climate, Advance Democracy Inc. wrote. Media2Rises content is already being shared by channels on Telegram which appear to cater to a highly conservative U.S. audience.
Experts say that Rundo also seems to understand how he can exploit divisions within the far-right spectrum, build coalitions, and reach a broader pool of potential recruits.
This kind of coalition-building is not surprising to me. Because Rundo appears to be trying to build a broad decentralized movement and not a single group, it makes sense to try to involve other groups that might have a presence in specific regions, said Fisher-Birch. Its troubling in that it means there are more potential recruits for this movement.
For example, Rundo has been playing to the punch-happy, explicitly white supremacist wing of the Proud Boys who seem to be growing increasingly frustrated with their leaders obsession with optics and hunger for political legitimacy. Though, on the face of things, the Proud Boys have remained very active by inserting themselves into local politics, one large Telegram hub thats linked to the Proud Boys, Western Chauvinist, has been promoting Active Club content and meet-ups.
(Fisher-Birch notes that its not clear whether any bona fide Proud Boy members have joined active clubs, though he wouldnt be surprised if that were the case. However, joining an active club could put Proud Boys at risk of violating their Constitution and Bylaws laid out in a 2018 document: They are not allowed to be part of organizations that promote the supremacy of any one race over another.
Researchers who have monitored Western Chauvinist, whose admins claim to be high-ranking Proud Boys, say the channel has become more brazenly white supremacist over the past year. The channel currently has over 50,000 subscribers. (The admins did not respond to a request for comment.)
The other key alliance Rundo has made is with Patriot Front, which emerged as a splinter faction out of its neo-Nazi predecessor Vanguard America in the aftermath of the 2017 Unite the Right rally. Patriot Front caters to white men under the age of 35, and the group thinly disguises its white nationalism through red-white-and-blue Americana. Theyre prolific propagandists; their fliers and stickers have been documented in all 50 states plus D.C. (with the exception of Hawaii). While Proud Boys are known for being sloppy, swilling beer, and getting into fistfights, Patriot Front could be considered their more uptight, affirmably white nationalist, cousin. Patriot Fronts rare public appearances are usually meticulously crafted: Members mobilize like a small army, with their faces completely covered, seemingly with the sole purpose of getting videos and photos that they could later turn into propaganda.
Somewhere between the Proud Boys and Patriot Front (with a sprinkling of other smaller groups, such as Nationalist Social Club) sits Rundos Active Clubs.
Its not clear how big the clubs are, or how many have cropped up. Fisher-Birch has identified at least seven in the U.S. and one in Canada, plus affiliated groups in Europe and Australia, and notes that, like any extremist group, their propaganda will overstate their size and effectiveness.
The other notable aspect of Will2Rise and the Active Club trend is its aesthetic. In videos posted around his media site, Rundo doles out advice for budding white supremacists for how to make their lifestyle seem appealing and enviable to others, like keeping fit and eating healthy.
The Active Clubs rely heavily on symbolism and code as a way to draw in potential recruits and other adherents. Like other modern far-right groups, the active clubs eschew Klan hoods and swastikas for a slightly more nuanced aesthetic, which is best defined by the merch sold via Will2Rises website. Some of the T-shirts incorporate symbols associated with RAM or Nitkins brand White Rex, or color schemes associated with either the Proud Boys or Patriot Front.
The clothing relies on in-group slogans and iconography, like the use of XIV symbolizing the fourteen words (a white supremacist mantra), or WWII fascist slogans, rather than explicit use of white supremacist logos, said Fisher-Birch. The idea is that those who wear Will2Rise gear wouldnt appear out of place at an MMA event, hardcore show, or skate park.
Another T-shirt sold via the website features an image of a recording screen, and on it, a masked man throwing a Molotov cocktail while cars burn behind him. The text on the T-shirt reads No Face, No Case.
Theres nothing coded about that, said Miller-Idriss. Thats just flat-out legal advice. That to me is striking to see the overt recommendation to cover face, in what seems to be a direct attempt to offer supporters of the movement free legal advice.
Though Rundo has stayed mum on his current whereabouts, hes offered some hints through podcasts. During a podcast recorded by a far-right group in New Zealand, he talked about how it was easier to stay off the radar in Eastern Europe because renters can often lease an apartment through a verbal agreement with a landlord instead of having to turn over the extensive paperwork thats generally required in the U.S. He said that hed traveled around somewhat, attending various events in Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, and Hungary.
In that podcast, the host remarked that they were surprised the government hadnt come looking for him yet. I would have thought theyd be wasting time and resources, like hunting you down, they said. These days, Rundo says, he avoids flyinghe claims hes had at least two experiences where local intelligence officers were waiting to meet him as he got off the plane.

Third attorney takes over U.S. Capitol riot case of East Naples man with Proud Boys ties – Naples Daily News
Posted: at 5:18 pm
TheEast Naples man suspected of participating in the U.S. Capitol riot in Januaryis now being representedby a Tampa attorney, replacing the high-profile lawyer who had taken over the case in March.
Christopher Worrell,50, was arrested after FBI agents executed a search and arrest warrant at his home on March 12.
The prosecution claims Worrell assaulted a line of law enforcement officers with pepper spray gel outside the U.S. Capitol building during the riot in Washington D.C. on Jan. 6.
On Friday, a joint stipulation for substitution of counsel motion beforeJudge Royce C. Lamberth in U.S. District court in Washington D.C., was filedlisting Attorney Alex Reed Stavrou, Sr., of Tampa as Worrell's new lawyer, replacing Attorney John Pierce.

And: Attorney: East Naples man arrested in connection to US Capitol riot at risk of COVID
The motion said Pierce, who's status has been unclear lately, would have no further responsibilities in the Worrell case.
Pierce had been representing17 of the more than 500 people charged in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.Pierce was said to possibly be ill with COVID-19, on a ventilator and unresponsive, according to a notice filed by the prosecution in Worrells case.
But arecent story in USA Today said Pierce, the lawyer for more than a dozen people charged in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, informed judges in Washington, D.C., that he's been released from a 12-day stay ina Los Angeles-area hospital and would be back on his cases soon.
AnNPR reporter tweetedthat Pierce said he hadnot been vaccinated against COVID-19, and doesn't expect to be, and wouldn't be "elaborating further on my personal medical issues."
Pierce first became famous as the lawyer forKyle Rittenhouse, after the teen was charged with fatally shooting two people and wounding a third during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August 2020.Rittenhouse fired Pierce in February.
Stavrou, who did not respond to a request for comment Saturday, is the third attorney for Worrell. His first attorney,Landon Miller, was terminated from the case in March and Pierce took over representation.
Despite concerns over Pierce's whereabouts, the prosecution continued to file motions including opposition to revokingWorrells pretrialdetention. The motion filed by Worrells defense team wasa reply to the prosecution's opposition to revoking the detention order.
More: D.C. Judge orders East Naples man with Proud Boys ties to remain jailed through trial
The motion from Worrells defense team said he should be releasedpendinghis trial because he is not getting proper treatmentfor hisnon-Hodgkins lymphoma or his broken handwhile at the mens correctional treatment facility.
Federal prosecutors said that was not true and listed dates for Worrell's cancer biopsy.
According to a motion filed by federal prosecutors on Sept. 16, "25 pages of Mr. Worrells medical records, which contain those records that have been entered since August 12, 2021. The records indicate that Mr. Worrell has now received the two biopsies that he complained of not having received in his original motionthe same biopsies he previously declined to attend. ... He is in fact routinely receiving care for his lymphoma, including at world-class outside hospitals with specialties in cancer care."
Federal prosecutors said Worrell received care for every ailment hebrought to the attention of the D.C. Jail staff.
"His emergency motion to revoke the detention order should be denied as meritless," the motion said. JudgeLamberth has not yet ruled on the motions.

Why We Must Disband this Protest-Busting NYPD Unit – nyclu.org
Posted: at 5:18 pm
On January 18, protestors marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day, stopping only to break into song and dance. But when they reached City Hall Park in Manhattan, they were met by police officers clad in riot gear.
Officers flooded the streets and ordered everyone to clear the roadway. Protesters obliged, but moments later, officers in the NYPDs Strategic Response Group (SRG) charged at the marchers. They pushed, pummeled, and dragged protesters into the street. By the end of the night, 28 people were arrested.
For more than a year, the NYCLUs protest monitors have witnessed and documented incidents like this across New York City. A clear pattern quickly emerged: When SRG arrives on the scene, officers escalate situations and injure New Yorkers who are exercising their First Amendment rights.
To protect the safety and First Amendment rights of New Yorkers, the unit must be disbanded.
Formed in 2015, the SRG is a rapid-response unit with a budget that ballooned within a year of its founding from $13 million to $90 million.
Despite the Departments initial claims that the SRG would engage in counterterror work, the NYPDs public description of the unit does not include counterterrorism. In fact, nearly every policing activity the SRG performs is already carried out by other NYPD agencies. The only unique role the SRG seems to fill is its heavy specialization in the suppression of protest.
During the 2020 racial justice protests, 1,300 officers were added to the SRGs command and the units brutalization of protestors came into full view. The NYPD is facing numerous lawsuits related to the departments treatment of protesters during last years protests. In many of these lawsuits, the SRG is front-and-center.
On June 4, 2020, the SRG descended on demonstrators in Mott Haven before the 8pm curfew. With demonstrators unable to escape, SRG officers brutally beat, zip-tied, and arrested 263 protesters, medics, and legal observers. Sixty-one people were injured.
The incident prompted a Human Rights Watch report that details the violent police attack, describing SRG and NYPD officers beating trapped protesters with batons, fists, and feet; deploying pepper spray at point-blank range; and using their bicycles as weapons. The report declared the NYPD's conduct "intentional, planned, and unjustified."
Between May 2020 and July 2021, NYCLU protest monitors witnessed 40 instances of police arresting non-violent protesters. Monitors documented 24 incidents of kettling, a violent and controversial tactic used to trap and arrest protestors, and 39 instances of use of force, including use of bicycles as weapons, batons, and pepper spray. The SRG was present and participating at all but one of these incidents.
The SRG is known for its propensity to turn non-violent protests into brutal police crackdowns. The voluntary unit attracts officers seeking more action, who often have long records of misconduct. But the SRGs pattern of violence is not just the behavior of a few bad actors. Members of the unit are trained to crush protest especially protest for racial justice with force.
The SRGs Field Force Operations manual includes guidelines for mass arrests, sound cannon deployment, and tactical formations like encirclement. Described as a formation utilized to take a group of people into custody, encirclement is functionally identical to kettling.
In the Bike Squads manual, the SRGs bias is laid bare. Protest groups are divided into two categories: peaceful and violent. Examples of violent protestors are BLM movement, Occupy Wall Street, and Anti-Trump Demonstrators.
These biased SRG trainings help explain the units disparate policing of protests. For example, in 2018, the SRG allowed the Proud Boys to march without a police escort and backed away when members of the white supremacist group attacked counter-protesters. They then escorted Proud Boy founder Gavin McIness to his car.
Our protest monitors have consistently observed that right-wing, white supremacist and pro-police groups almost always protest without any SRG interference. In contrast, Black Lives Matter protests are consistently policed, brutalized, and arrested by the unit.
The SRG has a history of racial bias and misconduct. The NYCLUs database of New York Citys Civilian Complaint Review Board filings shows that SRG officers receive an abnormally high number of misconduct complaints compared to non-SRG officers. Of officers who were named in at least one complaint while in the SRG, the median number of complaints since 2000 is six. The median number of complaints received since 2000 for all officers in the database is three.
The SRG also has a pattern of targeting people of color. The NYCLUs database shows there have been 455 complaints filed against SRG officers between 2015 and 2021. Of those complaints that included a victims race, the impacted individual was a person of color 91 percent of the time. Sixty-six percent of victims were Black, 21 percent were Latinx, and nine percent were white.
In the fight to divest, disempower, and demilitarize the police, we have to start by removing the units that do the most harm. We should begin by putting an end to the SRG itself.
The NYPD with SRG officers enforcing its will effectively decides who has the right to protest in New York City. That decision should not rest with the NYPD or any police department.
The SRG should be disbanded and its tactics must not be recreated under another name. The units $90 million budget meanwhile, should be reinvested in ways that help, rather than harm New Yorkers.
Disbanding the SRG is a critical step in protecting the First Amendment and removing the specter of violence from protest.

The next generation of data-driven healthcare is here – Cointelegraph
Posted: at 5:17 pm
In the past 60 years, the life expectancy of the average newborn has increased by nearly 20 years from 52.5 to 72, as of 2018. Weve seen an incredible wave of technological innovation in this time: The introduction of the internet, medical breakthroughs and an enhanced understanding of public health initiatives have transformed the course of human life. And with new technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence now taking the stage, we know that even more radical transformation is coming. These disruptive technologies are paving the way for both longer and healthier lifespans.
To show you just how much healthcare has advanced thanks to these technologies, I want to highlight a case study of two unique companies, Insilico Medicine and Longenesis. Together, they show how the development of AI for medical care has grown in tandem with the advent of blockchain healthcare applications.
In 2014, longevity innovator Alex Zhavoronkov and their company, Insilico Medicine, reached out to me. The company was based on a simple but radical premise: using AI to accelerate drug discovery and development. At the time, the use of AI was still nascent, both in public awareness and its applications to medicine. But in the seven years since I invested in this company, it has used AI to transform research and development in the therapeutics sector completely. Its rapid discovery and development of new therapies result from the incredible amount of data they process searching for the next best cure. Rich in source and scope, this data comes from the genomic and proteomic sequences of actual healthcare patients. Through dozens of new drug candidates, they have shown tremendous potential in using AI for data-driven healthcare.
However, the groundbreaking progress made by Insilico was not without obstacles. Working with massive amounts of data presented unique challenges regarding centralization and security. Data in healthcare tends to be scattered and siloed. Each doctor, medical center and hospital maintains its silo and, due to privacy regulations, data is typically only shared when necessary for patient care. Having access to synthesized patient data was critical for Insilicos AI algorithms to be successful, and it just wasnt available.
In looking for solutions to the security and centralization concerns associated with this type of data, Alex and the team at Insilico Medicine soon discovered blockchain and distributed ledger technology. The immutability of entries on the blockchain and the ability to have multiple decentralized nodes contributing data to a shared ledger offered a solution to the complex problems associated with patient data. This technology was what they had been looking for, but they needed a partner to build it with them. Insilico formed a joint venture with leading European blockchain company Bitfury (now one of the largest emerging technology companies on the continent) and launched a new company named Longenesis. Longenesis aim was clear: to create a blockchain healthcare ecosystem that considered the sensitive requirements of health data and the application needs of biotech research.
Related: Concerns around data privacy are rising, and blockchain is the solution
Longenesis designed a blockchain-based environment for stakeholders across the healthcare/biotech industry, including patient organizations, biomedical research groups, and research partners and sponsors. The beauty of Longenesis solution is that there is always a record of consent. When patients agree to share their data for any purpose, there is immutable proof of their permission.
Its first product, Curator, is used by hospitals and other care organizations to safely and compliantly present the data available for researchers without compromising patient privacy. This function empowers researchers to review datasets without endangering the security of patient information. When a researcher or company is interested in using the data, Longenesis second product Engage provides it. Engage also allows hospitals and researchers to quickly onboard patients into new medical trials and research, recording ongoing patient consent. Regardless of whether AI is being used to analyze new data from a medical trial or old data from medical records, patients know about it and can decide to consent at their convenience. Longenesis has deployed this solution in state hospitals, government biobanks and more. Its work empowers AI companies such as Insilico Medicine to access vast amounts of data that can be used for artificial intelligence analysis, leading to even more treatment and drug discovery.
While Ive highlighted two companies here, there are thousands of outstanding startups, research institutions and physicians working tirelessly to improve the human lifespan. They could all benefit from blockchain-unlocked data and the analytical power of artificial intelligence.
The average hospital generates 760 terabytes of data annually, yet 80% of this valuable data is unstructured and unavailable to researchers. It needs to remain secure, and patients need to provide ongoing consent for its use. This disconnect is holding back progress across every aspect of medicine. The pairing of blockchain and AI can unlock this data for analysis, facilitate patient consent, track usage of clinical data and more.
Without blockchain, artificial intelligence lacks the ethically sourced and protected biomedical data it needs to find new solutions. Without artificial intelligence, the vast amounts of data protected by blockchain remain secure but unusable for research. Progress happens when these innovations work together, just as critical public health initiatives of past decades succeeded thanks to the advent of the World Wide Web. Then, our goal must be to bring these technologies more fully to market so longevity-focused care can be accessible to all.

How to live longer: Delicious snack to reduce heart attack risk and boost longevity by 10% – Express
Posted: at 5:17 pm
When trying to ascertain the best types of food or diet to help improve your lifespan, reduce risk of serious diseases and improve brain health; turning to studies is often the best bet. Numerous studies have found one of the best snacks to help with the ageing process and could even boost your lifespan by 10 percent.
Berries are a nutritious, heart-healthy snack for everyone, according to dietitian Juliette Kellow and nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.
Theyre packed full of antioxidants and fibre, which contribute to cardiovascular improvements, they said.
Eating just three or more servings of berries a week could lower your risk of a heart attack by as much as 34 percent, they revealed.

An 18-year study conducted by led by Dr Eric Rimm, associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School, found that women who ate the most strawberries and blueberries were 34 percent less likely to have suffered a heart attack than women who ate the least of these fruits.
The answer to why berries are so healthy could lie in their antioxidants content called anthocyanins, which protect against the oxidative stress and inflammation that contribute to the development of heart disease.
Blueberries also contain specific flavonoid molecules which help fight DNA damage and slow age-related damage to brain cells.
Numerous studies have shown that blueberries slow age-related damage to brain cells and protect memory-associated brain regions from oxidant and inflammatory damage.
The result is improvements in overall cognitive function.
One study on fruit flies found those who regularly consumed blueberries lived 10 percent longer.
Equally it was found that berries not only boosted the fruit flies longevity but also improved their levels of activity.
These benefits arouse from both the increased tolerance of oxidant stress and from beneficial changes int eh way certain important genes are exposed.
Scientists from the Human Nutrition Research Center on Ageing found that strawberries helped improved mental capabilities.
The research trial involved 37 participants of both men and women between the ages of 60 to 75 and consumed two cups of freeze-dried strawberries a day or a placebo for a total of 90 days.
The results found those who consumed the strawberries showed improved cognitive skills.
The participants also had significantly better spatial navigation, a vital skill for identifying locations and not getting lost, one which is crucial that we maintain as we get older, and verbal recall, which is important for communication.

What To Eat To Heal Leaky Gut, From Dr Steven Gundry – The Beet
Posted: at 5:17 pm
Dr. Steven Gundry has written several best-selling books includingThe Plant Paradox, The Longevity Paradox, andThe Energy Paradox,to help anyone who thinks they are eating healthy but is still gaining weight, feeling low-energy, bloated, or suffering from myriad symptoms like leaky gut syndrome that, no matter how many salads and green smoothies they make, just don't go away.
Dr. Gundry will patiently yet persistently (and clearly) explain to anyone who will listen that he believes that not all plant-based foods arebeneficial for everyone, and if you have an autoimmune disease or an adverse reaction to foods, instead of turning your back on a plant-based approach, the better course is to steer clear of compounds such as lectins, which may be aggravating. His point: If you know which whole foods to eat and which to avoid, you can enjoy a plant-based diet and feel amazing. It's actuallythe key to longevity, weight loss, and consistent health.
To live longer, feel better, lose weight, andenjoy clear, glowing skin, and the energy and lithe movements of an athlete, all you have to do is eat more foods that agree with you and stay away with the ones that cause inflammation, says Dr. Gundry.Like everyone else you talk to these days, he is bullish on mushrooms, andnot a fan offoods that contain lectins, which is a full array of menu items, from pasta and grains to tomatoes, eggplant, and other nightshades, and legumes, which may be leaving you with what's known as leaky gut, but is essentially an allergic-style reaction to lectins, that once you solve, could allow you to add back some of these foods with little or no reaction, so you feel amazing.
Dr. Gundry has been plant-based forover 20 years and has power research to back up his claims and has conducted his own original researchinto lectins, leaky gut, and the stories of patients who lose weight and lower their markers for major diseases, while they live lectin-free.
In an exclusive interview, he talks toThe Beetabouthis"tough love" stance on: "Eat plants, but not all plants," which is clearly working for him and others who follow his strict anti-lectin approach. Here, he shares his views on what to eat for longevity and to live a long healthy life until the day you die.
Lucy Danziger: Not everyone can tolerate certain vegetables, like tomatoes. What's your advice for people who want to eat healthy and plant-based, but for whom not all foods agree with them?
Dr. Steven Gundry: Believe it or not, plants don't want us to eat them. They were not put on Earth for us to eat them, and they want to live. They want their seeds and babies to live. Their only defense system is compounds like lectins so they try to dissuade an animal or preditor that it's not a good thing to eat them.
We have a defense mechanism against these plant proteins, including acid in our stomach, our gut microbiome, but as I talk about, our gut microbiome has been decimated by antibiotics that are sprayed on all of our vegetables, and so we're pretty defenseless against these plant toxins.
If you have what's called "leaky gut," [which is defined as an unhealthy gut lining that develops cracks or holes, allowing partially digested food, toxins, and bugs to penetrate the tissues beneath it and cause inflammation], then you have to change your diet. The way to solve leaky gut is to eliminate what's aggravating you.
Once we heal that, the immune system can be retrained to forget that itgets bothered by these compounds. That being said, for 22years, I've asked patients to remove troublesome foods fromtheir diets foods that they thought were really good for them. When they remove these foods, we can show them that their leaky gutgoes away and their auto-immune disease gets resolved.
In Western society, we've set ourselves up to fail, to be sensitive to these plant toxins. For my patients with celiac disease, when we took other lectin-containing foods away from them, their celiac disease dissolves.
Lucy Danziger:So, that's fascinating. It's not just gluten! Do you think everyone should stay away from lectins or just those that have sensitivity?
Dr. Steven Gundry:I can tell you that all disease begins in the gut, a leaky gut. If you have any disease process, that includes diabetes, arthritis, mental health, depression, acne, anxiety, you nameit, we'll find that you have a leaky gut. if you remove these plant issues, then you'll repair yourself and everything will return to normal. I had a meeting at Harvard a few years ago, about the effects on lectins and brain function and memory loss. One of the professors challenged me and said, 'well I believe everything in moderation,' and I said, "That's great if you want a moderate amount of diabetes, a moderate amount of arthritis, or a moderate amount of artery disease, then I agree with you, but why would I want that?
Lucy Danziger:Most people are just waking upto the idea that food is medicine. Where do we start? Should we start by adding more plant-based foods or taking away animal products? What's your best advice for someone who wants to eat healthier to boost immunity?
Dr. Steven Gundry: Rule number one, which I write in all my books, is that what I tell you not to eat is more important than what I tell you to eat.
Jack Lalanne used to say, "If it tastes good, spit it out. " He was right. Another mistake we make, and this dates back to our great grandparents, is that when you eat whole foods eat them whole! Only then are they healthy. When you line up wheat and turn it into a "whole wheat" bread, it's no longer whole wheat. It's bread.
Our ancestors ate whole foods, if you're going to eat foods whole, then eat them whole.
The same is true of fruit:If you're going to eat a grapefruit whole, it's a lot better for you than a glass of grapefruit juice, which is a mainlining a glass of fructose.
We're beginning to learn a lot more than fructose, in whatever form. It used to be only available to us in season for fruit, which was usually late summer and early fall [when we are active with the harvest]. But now we have 365 of endless summer, which is also endless sugar, because of high-fructose corn syrup and we are not designed to handle that.
Lucy Danziger: We're constantly given opportunities to eat, but we're rarely given opportunities to burn off what we eat. Our bodies are made to move, not eat all day!
Dr. Steven Gundry:Agreed.
Lucy Danziger: Let's talk about mushrooms. I love mushrooms. What's your opinion on them?
Dr. Steven Gundry: Mushrooms are a great source of polysaccharides, which are long-chain sugars that our gut microbiome biome loves to eat.
Certain mushrooms have one of the most amazing brain-stimulating mitochondrion-boosting compounds. The more mushrooms you eat, the more nutrients you get. People who eat two cups of mushrooms per week (that's not even that much) have a 90 percent reduction in dementia, compared to those who don't eat two cups of mushrooms a week, according to a recent study. If we had a drug that promised you a 90 percent reduction in Alzheimer's, I can tell you everyone would pay for it. But if you could pick up mushrooms at the store for three bucks then why not?
Lucy Danziger: Tell me about sorghum. Why is this good to eat?
Dr. Steven Gundry: Sorghum produces a high-quality, high-protein grain. It's an ancient grain that uses the least amount of water to produce of any crop. In the US, we used it as cattle food. It's a cash crop. In the Middle East and Africa, it's their grain.
Sorghum is one of the ways we can have an impact on climate change and the amount of water we need to grow food. Let's use what we know about climate change and grow a grain that's good for us and saves the planet.
Lucy Danziger: How did you learn the connection between human health, the environment, and animals? Most doctors don't think that way or learn about nutritionin medical school.
Dr. Steven Gundry: As an undergrad at Yale, I had a special major in human pollution biology and I wrote a thesis about health. Then my life was changed over 20 years ago by a gentleman who had reversed massive artery disease and he told me what he eats and it was exactly what I wrote about in my thesis. So, I put myself on the diet I wrote about in my thesis, and then I put thousands of patients on this program. We're not supposed to have certain diseases, like heart disease. People who eat like us don't get these diseases.
Lucy Danziger: Aging and the way we age is really up to us. I believe that this kind of medicine and the way you practice is life-changing. But how do you tell patients who come to you and say, "help me now?" that they need to change their diet?
Dr. Steven Gundry:We can pretty much give anyone a crystal ball to look at what's going to happen. You can luckily control your faith, that's really exciting and drastic.
None of us want to get old because we see what happens when we get to that age. But, it's an opportunity to intervene and control what's going to be your fate. Ninety-two percent of the things that are going to happen to you are controlled by you, and 8 percent is determined by your genes.
We can overcome the way those genes get expressed. We know now that how we influence our microbiome and give it what the bacteria in our gut wants to eat, they want to have a home, and if you give the microbiome what they need, they will, in turn, take care of you, which is their home.
The really exciting thing in animal and human research is that thebacteria in our gut have the most effect on our lifespan than anything else. We should actually be eating for our microbiome rather than our tongue. That is temporary, and the gut has long-term ramifications.
Don't sit around and wait for your genes to create conditions that don't have to come at all.
Lucy Danziger: Do I need to take Vitamin D or can I get it from my food?
Dr. Steven Gundry: It's nearly impossible to get anadequate amount of vitamin D from food and from the sun. When I first meet my patients, most of them are deficient in vitamin D, despite living in Southern California. The higher your vitamin D level is, the longer you live, period.
There arestudies that show people with higher vitamin D levels, the safer they are from COVID. We rarely see vitamin D toxicity, It could exist but we don't see it. When we are confronted by a lethal virus, and we have a natural substance we can take, why wouldn't we?
Lucy Danziger:Any last piece of advice?
Dr. Steven Gundry:The more we can not eat, within reason, the better our health will be long-term. The amazing effects of intermittent fasting or time-restrictive eating are that it prevents diabetes, boosts your immune system, and protects you against certain diseases.

A malaria antibody prevented infections in purposefully-infected volunteers – Freethink
Posted: at 5:17 pm
Malaria is a killer.
Caused by a tiny parasite, spread by infected mosquitoes, the disease afflicts hundreds of millions each year, killing hundreds of thousands cruelly, most are children under 5.
Despite making some progress in much of the developed world, the disease is eliminated, and bed nets have cut down on deaths in malarial regions vaccines and other treatments to prevent infections have yet to be successful on a broad scale.
To make matters worse, the parasite that causes malaria, P. falciparum, is notorious for becoming resistant to our drugs that fight it.
Malaria continues to be a major cause of illness and death in many regions of the world, especially in infants and young children; therefore, new tools are needed to prevent this deadly disease, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases(NIAID) director Anthony Fauci said.
Now, NIAID researchers have proven that one antibody an immune system weapon that sticks to bad guys can prevent malaria for up to nine months. How can they be sure?
They injected volunteers with malaria.
A global challenge: Purposefully exposing a volunteer to a virus, bacteria, parasite, fungus, or what have you, so that you cause disease, is known as a human challenge trial.
The risks of human challenge trials are obvious; if were purposely exposing people to a pathogen which may make them sick, theres a chance that, well, theyll get sick. Possibly very sick.
For that reason, researchers usually reserve human challenges for diseases we have good, proven treatments for.
Malaria is a killer, and vaccines to prevent it have not yet been successful on a broad scale.
First and foremost, you need to have a known, proven, and effective countermeasure, Ruth Faden, a bioethicist at Johns Hopkins, previously told me.
You also need volunteers who are low-risk, and to be able to make them just sick enough to mimic a real-world infection.
So whats the advantage? Because you are guaranteeing infection, you dont have to recruit thousands of people and wait around for enough of them to get sick on their own to give you the data you need a process that can take months or years.
By challenging their volunteers with the malaria parasite, the researchers were able to tell quickly and definitively if their malaria antibody worked.
Trial by parasite: An antibody is a protein your immune system makes that sticks to specific targets, called antigens. In the case of the COVID-19 vaccines, that antigen is the spike protein.
For some diseases, you can skip the vaccine part and just jump straight to giving people a dose of the antibodies thats what the researchers did here. Research in Petri dishes and animals have already shown that certain antibodies could halt malaria in its tracks by glomming onto it before it infects cells. The question is, would that same thing happen in humans?
They began by extracting an antibody from the blood of a volunteer who had previously been given an experimental malaria vaccine. They beefed up that antibody to last longer in the body than normal, then manufactured a bunch of them using Chinese hamster ovary cells, Science reported. (Yes, for real.)
By infecting volunteers with the malaria parasite, the researchers could quickly and definitively tell if their malaria antibody worked.
To test it, the researchers performed a two-part trial. They enrolled 40 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 50 who had never been infected by malaria before.
In the first part of the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 21 of those subjects received the malaria antibody, either through IV infusion or an injection like a vaccine. They were then studied for six months to see how safe and tolerable the treatment is, and to take a look at antibody levels in their blood.
The second part of the trial is where our human challenge comes in. Nine people who received antibodies and six brave controls signed up to get bitten by mosquitoes with malaria.
The subjects were followed closely for three weeks. Five of the six people without antibodies became infected. (Dont worry, they were given meds and cleared the parasite).
None of the antibody group did.
The results suggest that a single infusion of a monoclonal antibody can protect people from malaria for at least 9 months, Fauci said. Additional research, however, is still needed.
Not a silver bullet: This is a great proof of concept, but its not yet ready as an intervention, W. Ripley Ballou, who helped develop a malaria vaccine, told Science.
Theres a few reasons for this. First, the study, while promising, was small. Its not enough to tell us precisely how effective this is.
Second, manufacturing the antibodies would likely be extremely expensive impractical in countries where malaria is an issue. (In a similar scenario, a monoclonal antibody made by AstraZeneca that could prevent COVID-19 for up to a year costs about $1,000 a dose, compared to about $20 for the vaccines.)
And, third, working in a laboratory in the United States is a far cry from working in the real world.
None of the subjects who received the antibodies were infected by the malaria parasites.
These results are very exciting and their longevity makes it very promising for something like a travellers vaccine, Joshua Blight, co-founder of the antigen-developing startup baseimmune, told me via email.
However in many cases studies can often fail to translate to the field where natural exposure occurs at a high rate, so well have to wait and see the field results. The coveted treatment for a region where a disease is endemic would ideally [be] something that protect[s] for life or many years, and is logistically viable, preferably no intravenous administration.
Its a sentiment acknowledged by the researchers themselves.
People said to me when I got this result, Have you broken out the champagne? study leader and immunologist Robert Seder told Science.
I said, No, I got a beer. Ill only break out the champagne when I have data from Africa.
Wed love to hear from you! If you have a comment about this article or if you have a tip for a future Freethink story, please email us at tips@freethink.com.

Gambling addiction leads to increased risk of suicide – WKBN.com
Posted: at 5:16 pm
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)Addiction to gambling can not only lead to social, financial, and even emotional stress and also increased risk of suicide.
Throughout this week, recovery centers are putting a spotlight on the dangers of gambling addiction in local communities through a nationwide campaign called Responsible Gaming Week.
Its a hidden addiction, a lot of people do not talk about it, said Maria Garner, gambling counselor at Maryhaven.
Throughout her career as a gambling counselor, Garner said shes seen hundreds of people struggle with or refuse to admit their addiction to gambling.
Its an issue she said has gotten worse, due to online gambling.
Theres so many things that could trigger it, in a day, that its just, it is very difficult, said Garner.
Take, for instance, one of her patients, Shelley Spohn.
Before Maria, I was very hesitant to tell anyone, especially my family, which would lead me to gamble more, said Shelley Spohn, a patient in recovery at Maryhaven.
Spohn said addiction to gambling started after she went back to school and got her bachelors degree.
Shes a widow, whos recently retired, and said the lack of things to do, led her to visiting the casinos.
Eventually, it turned into an addiction, leading Spohn to spend away her car, retirement, and even her husbands life insurance.
It was very devastating and very demoralizing, I felt very much, so much like a failure. And that led to basically thinking, there is no way out of this, other than suicide, said Spohn.
At her lowest point, Spohn reached out to Maryhaven and was put in touch with Garner, who helped to get her life back on track.
Spohn is grateful, and hopes that others like her, wont be afraid to ask for help.
You cant do it by yourself, absolutely you cannot do it by yourself. You need the support of your family, and your counselors, and anyone else that will support you, said Spohn.
