Robots can trick us into thinking we are socially interacting and slow our reactions, scientists say – Euronews
Posted: September 2, 2021 at 2:06 pm
It has long been known that making eye contact with a robot can be an unsettling experience. Scientists even have a name for the queasy feeling: the "uncanny valley".
Now, thanks to researchers in Italy, we also know it's more than just a feeling.
A team at the Istituto Italiano Di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa has shown how a robot's gaze can trick us into thinking we are socially interacting and slow our ability to make decisions.
"Gaze is an extremely important social signal that we employ on a day-to-day basis when interacting with others," said Professor Agnieszka Wykowska, lead author of the research published on Wednesday in the journal Science Robots.
"The question is whether the robot gaze will evoke very similar mechanisms in the human brain as another human's gaze would".
The team asked 40 volunteers to play a video game of "chicken" - where each player has to decide whether to allow a car to drive straight towards another car or to deviate to avoid a collision - against a humanoid robot sitting opposite them.
Between rounds, players had to look at the robot, which would sometimes look back and other times look away.
In each scenario, the scientists collected data on behaviour and neural activity via electroencephalography (EEG), which detects electrical activity in the brain.
"Our results show that, actually, the human brain processes the robot gaze as a social signal, and that signal has an impact on the way we're making decisions, on the strategies we deploy in the game and also on our responses," Wykowska said.
"The mutual gaze of the robot affected decisions by delaying them, so humans were much slower in making the decisions in the game".
The findings have implications on where and how humanoid robots are deployed in future.
"Once we understand when robots elicit social attunement, then we can decide in which sort of context this is desirable and beneficial for humans and in which context this should not occur," said Wykowska.
According to a report by the International Federation of Robotics, worldwide sales of professional service robots had already jumped 32 per cent to $11.2 billion (9.4 billion) between 2018 and 2019.

UK manufacturers are increasingly interested in robotic automation, as the impact of Covid-19 and Brexit hits the labour market.
It comes amid a background of reduced production capacity firstly due to lockdowns and social distancing measures, and subsequently by labour shortages due to Brexit. When asked whether the pandemic has been game-changing for their business, 90.8 per cent of the respondents said yes.
Part of the problem was a lack of contingency planning. Research by the CIPDs People Management magazine found that two in five organisations had no plans in place to manage the outbreak, and now theyre scrambling to adjust to the new normal.
Robots are seen as a potential solution 48.8 per cent of respondents said they were likely to invest in automation in the next five years, and 50.4 per cent said robots would help them comply with social distancing requirements. Health and safety rules and staff shortages were other considerations driving the increased interest in automation.
The huge impact that COVID-19 has had on the economy will be felt long after the virus has gone and will permanently influence the way businesses conduct themselves moving forward, says Nigel Platt of ABB Robotics. The inherent flexibility and high performance of todays robots, coupled with the expanding range of options on offer, from small cobots through to heavy duty industrial robots, enables manufacturers to better prepare themselves against future uncertainties caused by impending pandemics or economic instabilities.
Those already using automation cited flexibility and consistency as key benefits. While the UK has lagged behind other countries when it comes to embracing robotic automation in manufacturing applications, those companies that have made the switch to robots have reported a range of benefits that underline their ability to transform productivity, efficiency and competitiveness, says Julian Ware, a sales manager at ABB. The results of our survey provide hope that these benefits will be realised by a growing number of companies in the next few years as robotic automation becomes recognised for its ability to provide a greater degree of certainty in challenging times.

Scientists: Life May Thrive on Ocean Worlds Far Larger Than Earth – Futurism
Posted: September 1, 2021 at 12:42 am
"A biosignature detection would transform our understanding of life in the universe."Extreme Conditions
A team of scientists has identified a new class of exoplanets and, despite their drastic differences from our home here on Earth, the researchers say they could be great candidates in the search for extraterrestrial life.
These so-called Hycean planets are known for their high temperatures, ocean-covered surfaces, and hydrogen-rich atmospheres. That means they harbor more extreme conditions than Earth, but the University of Cambridge scientists behind a new study published in The Astrophysical Journal say that Hycean oceans could still theoretically support the same sorts of microbial life that live in Earths oceans.
Hycean planets open a whole new avenue in our search for life elsewhere, lead study author and Cambridge astronomer Nikku Madhusudhan said in a press release.
For the most part, the search for habitable exoplanets has focused on finding as Earth-like of a world as possible, for the simple reason that Earth is the only place weve ever found signs of life. As a result, Hycean planets have been overlooked because they have up to a 2.6 times larger radius and are 10 times more massive than Earth and temperatures can hit 200 degrees Celsius. Thats bad news for anyone searching for a second home for humanity to inhabit, but not the end of the world for extremophile aliens.
Its exciting that habitable conditions could exist on planets so different from Earth, study coauthor Anjali Piette said in the release.
For now, this is theoretical work theres no indication that life actually exists on any Hycean worlds. But because the exoplanet class vastly outnumbers other candidates for habitable worlds, scientists may now have a better chance of finding something out there.
A biosignature detection would transform our understanding of life in the universe, Madhusudhan said. We need to be open about where we expect to find life and what form that life could take, as nature continues to surprise us in often unimaginable ways.

According to a recent survey of finance industry executives by consulting giant Deloitte, digital assets will likely replace fiat currencies in five to ten years and banks should take notice.
Deloittes 2021 Global Blockchain Survey affirms that banks should embrace their inevitable digital future, the report reads. In a seismic shift, financial leaders increasingly see digital assets as the future.
Some 76 percent of respondents said they believe digital assets will serve as a strong alternative to, or outright replacement for, fiat currencies in the next 510 years.
The report is a strong indication that a digital asset revolution could be soon be upon us and that those who wont follow the trend risk losing out.
More and more money is being permanently stored in the form of digital assets, leading to both institutions and investors looking at ways to adopt new ways to do so.
The report is a strong indication that changes are coming, whether the industry is ready or not.
Participation in the age of digital assets is not an option, it is inevitable, the report concludes. Leaders are left only to decide how to use digital assets and the new global financial service infrastructure to their greatest advantage.

Researchers Recreate Titan’s Atmosphere on Earth in Glass Vials – Futurism
Posted: at 12:42 am
This will help guide future NASA missions to Saturn's largest moon. Titan in a Vial
Scientists have been able to replicate the atmosphere of one of the solar systems most enigmatic moons right here on Earth.
The researchers were able to recreate the chemical composition of Saturns largest moon Titan in tiny glass vials, according to WIRED. The team presented their findings to the American Chemical Society (ACS) fall meeting this week.
Our research revealed a lot about the structures of planetary ices that was previously unknown, said Tome Runevski, an assistant professor of chemistry at Southern Methodist University and the studys principal investigator, at the event.
Want to make some moon atmosphere on your own? Simply dust off that laboratory freezer that can get down to -290 degrees F, gather your glass vials, and follow these instructions:
Typically, we introduce water, which freezes into ice as we lower the temperature to simulate the Titan atmosphere, said Runevski. We top that with ethane, which becomes a liquid, mimicking the hydrocarbon lakes that Cassini-Huygens found.
Runevski and his team made a few interesting discoveries. For example, two molecules typically found on Titan acetonitrile and propionitrile combine into a crystalline form due to the moons sub-freezing temperatures.
These insights and others gathered by Runevski will surely help guide future NASA missions to explore Titan along with similar expeditions to Europa. Itll also help us better understand a very fascinating part of our solar system.
While Titan is roughly a billion miles away from Earth, it shares many similarities to our planet including having lakes, rivers, rainy weather patterns, and an atmosphere. Many scientists hope that such conditions can facilitate life.

Picky Astronauts Refuse to Put Pineapple on Space Pizza – Futurism
Posted: at 12:42 am
"Everything but pineapple, that would be a serious offense in Italy."Pizza Night With Friends
Astronauts stationed on board the International Space Station threw their own zero-gravity pizza party, as seen in a clip uploaded to Instagram by European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet.
Floating pizza night with friends, it almost feels like a Saturday on Earth, Pesquet wrote in a caption. They say a good chef never reveals their secrets, but I made a video so you can be the judge.
The crew was also celebrating NASA astronaut and current crew member Megan McArthurs 50th birthday. My Space Brothers went all out: quesadillas and tortilla-pizzas with real cheese! she wrote in a Monday tweet.
And to get ahead of possible criticism from Italians watching back on the ground, Pesquet and the rest of the team made one notable omission while topping their pizzas.
Everything but pineapple, that would be a serious offense in Italy, Pesquet wrote in a caption of the video (though its unclear whether the ISS has any pineapple on board in the first place.)
Hawaiian pizza is just that controversial. But then again, the pies were made using tortillas as a base. How would that not offend Italians?
The clip shows the hungry crew assembling their own single-serving pizzas with the added complexity of having pepperoni slices and tortillas floating in mid-air.
The tomato sauce appears to be acting as the glue holding everything together, a critical aspect of making dinner in microgravity.
In all, the end result looks pretty tasty, though its still a far cry from the kind of pizza youd get to eat back on Earth, let alone Italy.
Fortunately, the station got its own oven back in 2019. The device, built by NanoRacks and Zero G Kitchen, was used in January 2020 to bake the first-ever cookies in space.
Its unclear whether Pesquet and crew used the Zero G Oven to bake their pizzas but its somewhat unlikely given the fact that the cookies had to be baked for several hours, according to the BBC.
Nobody has that kind of restraint, even in space.

Psychology professor Irwin Bernstein, 88, announced his sudden retirement after one of his students refused to wear her mask properly despite several attempts to get her to do so, according to University of Georgia student newspaper The Red & Black. The student initially arrived to class unmasked and Bernstein requested she get one from a university office. After the student was given an extra mask from a fellow classmate, she refused to wear it over her nose claiming she couldnt breathe with it on.
Bernstein informed the student he could die due to COVID-19 as he had Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. However, the girl continued to not wear her mask correctly.
At that point I said that whereas I had risked my life to defend my country while in the Air Force, I was not willing to risk my life to teach a class with an unmasked student during this Pandemic, said Bernstein to The Red & Black via email. I then resigned my retiree-rehire position.
Hannah Huff, a fourth-year psychology major, attended the class and told The Red & Black, Professor Bernstein said, Thats it. Im retired, and we watched him pack all of his papers into his bag and walk out of the classroom.
Huff said that the offending student got an earful from her peers who were shocked that their professor just quit on the spot, with some asking her, You know we need this class to graduate, right?
The damage is done, Huff told The Red & Black. Obviously she has her values, and theyre clearly not going to change even when someone asked you to do something that will make them feel comfortable. Bernstein is there for you [the student]. Like, he came out of retirement to do something for us, but you just cant take it out of the kindness of your heart to put a piece of fabric on properly.
This will actually mark Bernsteins second retirement from the institution, having initially retired from the University of Georgia in 2011. However, he remained on staff part time as a retiree-rehire.
On the first day of in-person classes on August 18, he told his students that his classes would have a strict no mask, no class policy.
I am sorry that the pandemic has caused so much dissension. I personally do not agree that stimulating the economy is more important than peoples lives and am disappointed that some people feel that it is, Bernstein said to the student-run publication.
COVID-19 hospitalizations are inching closer to record highs in the state of Georgia due to a Delta variant surge, according to The Wall Street Journal. In fact, 95 percent of intensive-care beds are filled across the Peach State, with 55 percent of them occupied by COVID-19 patients.
