Canada helping NASA launch Webb, the largest space telescope in history | Venture – Daily Hive

Posted: September 29, 2021 at 7:41 am

NASA, in partnership with the European and Canadian Space Agency (CSA), is set to launch the James Webb Space Telescope, which is 100 times more powerful than Hubble and will be the largest space telescope in history.

Considered the next generation of space telescopes, Webb is set to become the premier space observatory for astronomers worldwide, according to NASA.

The launch of Webb is expected to take place on December 21, 2021, the first day of winter.

NASA isnt calling the Webb a successor to the Hubble telescope, but rather an extension of what it has accomplished.

While Hubble orbits the Earth at 570 km above our home planet, Webb will sit at the Earth-Sun L2 Lagrange point, 1.5 million km away.

NASA

According to NASA, Webb will reveal new and unexpected discoveries, and help humankind understand the origins of the universe and our place in it.

NASA/Chris Gunn

Construction of the telescope was a massive undertaking.

NASA/Chris Gunn

Webb is an exemplary mission that signifies the epitome of perseverance, said Gregory L. Robinson, Webbs program director at NASA Headquarters in Washington, in a statement.

The CSA contributed a scientific instrument and a guidance sensor, and Canadian scientists will take part in missions related to Webb once it becomes active.

Webb, the man, was an American government official and the second appointed administrator of NASA in the 1960s.

Webb will be launched from Europes Spaceport in French Guiana.

Types of AI: distinguishing between weak, strong, and …

Posted: at 7:41 am

By now, youre probably pretty familiar with the term artificial intelligence.

You likely already know that AI is a computers ability to think and act intelligently.

You might already understand terms like machine learning and natural language processing.

But what about distinguishing between the different types of AI? Weak, strong, super, narrow, wide, ANI, AGI, ASI there are seemingly a lot of labels for types of AI.

So, even if you know what AI is and what it does, determining which type youre talking about isnt so clear.

For all the labels, there are only three main types of AI: weak AI, strong AI, and super AI.

Heres how to tell them apart.

Weak AI is both the most limited and the most common of thethree types of AI. Its also known as narrow AI or artificial narrow intelligence(ANI).

Weak AI refers to any AI tool that focuses on doing one task really well. That is, it has a narrow scope in terms of what it can do. The idea behind weak AI isnt to mimic or replicate human intelligence. Rather, its to simulate human behaviour.

Weak AI is nowhere near matching human intelligence, and it isnt trying to.

A common misconception about weak AI is that its barely intelligent at all more like artificial stupidity than AI. But even the smartest seeming AI of today are only weak AI.

In reality, then, narrow or weak AI is more like an intelligent specialist. Its highly intelligent at completing the specific tasks its programmed to do.

The next of the types of AI is strong AI, which is alsoknown as general AI or artificial general intelligence (AGI). Strong AI refersto AI that exhibits human-level intelligence. So, it can understand, think, andact the same way a human might in any given situation.

In theory, then, anything a human can do, a strong AI can dotoo.

We dont yet have strong AI in the world; it exists only in theory.

For a start, Moravecs paradox has us struggling to replicate the basic human functions like sight or movement. (Though image and facial recognition mean that AI is now learning to see and categorise.)

Add to this that currently, AI is only capable of the few things we program into it, and its clear that strong AI is a long way off. Its thought that to achieve true strong AI, we would need to make our machines conscious.

But if strong AI already mimics human intelligence andability, whats left for the last of the types of AI?

Super AI is AI that surpasses human intelligence andability. Its also known as artificial superintelligence (ASI) orsuperintelligence. Its the best at everything maths, science, medicine, hobbies, you name it. Even the brightest human minds cannot come close to theabilities of super AI.

Of the types of AI, super AI is the one most people mean when they talk about robots taking over the world.

Or about AI overthrowing or enslaving humans. (Or most other science fiction AI tropes.)

But rest assured, super AI is purely speculative at this point. That is, its not likely to exist for an exceedingly long time (if at all).

Distinguishing between types of AI means looking at what thetechnology can do. If its good at specific actions only, its narrow or weakAI. If it operates at the same level as a human in any situation, its strongAI. And, if its operating far above the capacity any human could hope for, itsartificial superintelligence.

So far, weve only achieved the first of the three types of AI weak AI. As research continues, its reasonable to strive for strong AI.

Super AI, meanwhile, will likely remain the stuff of science fiction for a long while yet.

India’s Attitude to Online Gaming – The Citizen

Posted: at 7:39 am

The online gaming industry across India is growing at an extraordinary rate. As of 2021, the industry is valued at around $900 million. But projections estimate its value will rise to a phenomenal $112 billion by 2025. This would suggest an overhaul of existing online gaming regulations is required, especially for online gambling activities.

The increased interest in online gaming in India has been attributed to multiple factors, not least having one of the youngest populations in the world. When youth and online gaming typically marry hand in hand, its easy to see why the country is becoming a hotbed for gaming. Other reasons for the uprising in gaming are widespread internet access and around 750 million residents owning smartphones.

Online casinos in India

The online gambling industry is one piece of the online gaming pie that is becoming more popular. Accessibility is one of the reasons for this, but another is that game developers are now creating casino games that merge classic games with Indian culture. For example, a Hindi version of crowd-favourite roulette can be found at some of the best sites, and local Rummy games are being revolutionised online, making some games more appealing than ever before.

But, is online gambling even legal?

There is no straight answer to whether online gambling is legal in India, and it is somewhat of a grey area. The country is divided into 27 autonomous states, each with jurisdiction over its own online gaming laws, and therefore different rules apply across the country. Sometimes a distinction is made between games of luck and skill.

At a national level, three pieces of legislation govern online gambling despite some of them being written before online casino websites existed. They were enacted in 1867, 1955 and 2000.

The Public Gaming Act 1867 states that gambling is illegal, although the internet had not even been invented at this time. Whereas The Prize Competition Act 1955 states that competitions are unlawful when the winnings of those competitions exceed a prize pool of 1,000 Rupees each month. However, the Information Technology Act 2000 does not explicitly state that online gambling is illegal.

Online gambling regulations overhaul needed.

The current state of play regarding online gambling legislation is considered dangerous to the Indian economy. The nation clearly has a thriving market for online gambling, and local casino sites could generate large amounts of taxation for the country. By legalising online casinos, the economy would also benefit from hundreds if not thousands of new jobs and more tax for the government.

In the same breath, it will prevent Indian residents and citizens from choosing to play at illegal casino sites or underground casinos where there are more significant risks to their safety and money. Moreover, it would stop them from being lured towards legal overseas casinos, which contribute to the successes of other countries with thriving gaming industries. In a nutshell, India may be missing a trick in its own backyard.

Internet Vikings to host PlayStar Casinos operations in New Jersey – Gambling Insider – In-depth Analysis for the Gaming Industry

Posted: at 7:39 am

Internet Vikings has partnered with PlayStar Casino to support the Swedish operators big push into the US market.

The supplier will provide its hosting services to PlayStar as it embarks on its inaugural US iGaming venture, with its operations in New Jersey expected to be up and running by early 2022.

Commenting on this new partnership, Adam Noble, PlayStars Chief Business Development Officer, said: We are thrilled to enter this agreement with Internet Vikings to support our launch into New Jersey. Sportsbook and iGaming hosting is a very different landscape in the US compared to Europe and that presents a number of challenges.

This partnership allows us to get on with our core business, safe in the knowledge that our technology stack is in good hands.

Internet Vikings has a longstanding reputation in the European iGaming space, and went Stateside in July 2021 with the launch of its services in West Virginia and Colorado.

This agreement will mark the providers expansion into New Jersey, a crucial jurisdiction for any business involved in the US online gambling sector, but a difficult one to break into.

The East Coast state brought in 21.5% of the total US online sports handle out of 15 states for the first half of 2021, and it reported a dramatic increase of 29% in online gaming revenues for August when compared to the same time last year, totalling $113.2m.

We are extremely proud for two reasons. First of all, entering New Jersey is an achievement on its own. Currently, its the most sought after, yet difficult to enter, state in the US, said Peter Ekmark, Internet Vikings CEO.

Secondly, we are very excited to continue this journey alongside our clients who place their trust in us and our products to support them at such a pivotal stage of their business lifecycle, and we are not planning to stop here.

We will continue to expand and transform so that we can fulfil the needs of our clients at every step of their growth process.

Locked-down Australians have been splurging on food delivery, electronics and online gambling, according to new data – Business Insider Australia

Posted: at 7:39 am

Consumers splashed out on food delivery, electronics and gambling apps during the 2021 lockdown, but reined in spending on homewares and office equipment.

Data on Australian spending produced by consultancy Accenture and credit bureau illion, which draws on anonymised bank transaction data, reveals how the countrys second extended lockdown has built on trends that began in 2020.

It showed that home delivery, a pandemic boom sector, continued its surge in recent months. In 2020, delivery spending shot up to 132% higher than pre-pandemic levels.

In 2021 it jumped to levels 203% higher than the norm.

The data shows the significant rise in spending on consumer electronics, pets and alcohol, consistent with last years lockdowns, has been repeated this time around.

However, the soaring investment in homewares and home offices in 2020 when the majority of the countrys office employees were forced to work from home did not, with spending on furniture, office equipment and hardware in Sydney and Melbourne much lower over the past four months.

Spending on online gambling has similarly peaked in Australias two biggest cities in the most recent lockdowns, at 329% above normal levels.

That surpasses the gambling surge during last years lockdown, which hit levels 215% above the pre-pandemic norm.

Andrew Charlton, managing director at Accenture, said national data showed online gambling spending had been elevated since the 2020 lockdowns, signalling what could be a lasting shift in consumer behaviour.

It appears many people have been introduced to online gambling during lockdowns, Charlton said.

The figures also show that when lockdowns were imposed in March of 2020, spending on consumer electronics leapt to 160% above normal levels, before falling back to pre-pandemic norms earlier this year.

But over the last three months, the amount spent on electronics has again surged, up to almost 150% above usual pre-pandemic spending levels.

Similarly the amount Sydney and Mebournes locked down residents shelled out on their pets rebounded this lockdown period. Spending during this years lockdowns is currently 66% higher than pre-pandemic norms, with the data suggesting this area of expenditure saw an uptick during 2020s stay-at-home orders and have remained elevated since.

The data shows supermarket spending skyrocketed in the early weeks of last years lockdown, as panic buying sparked by uncertainty around the pandemic drove consumers to stock up. Spending in April last year was 123% above the average for that month.

This behaviour did not carry over in a meaningful way into the beginning of the second extended lockdown, with consumption in late June sitting around the average pre-pandemic levels.

Food delivery spending has been slowly rising and continued to do so in the months between the first and second periods of lockdown.

In April last year, the amount spent was around 120% higher than pre-pandemic averages.

However by January of 2021 this had reached almost 200%, and by July of this year food delivery spending was almost 200% above pre-pandemic levels.

Boca Chica – Wikipedia

municipality in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Boca Chica is a municipality (municipio) of the Santo Domingo province in the Dominican Republic. Within the municipality there is one municipal district (distritos municipal): La Caleta.[5] As of the 2012 census it had 123,510 inhabitants, 70,184 living in the city itself and 53,326 in its rural districts (Secciones).[4]

Boca Chica has a popular beach with the same name, located about 30 kilometers east of Santo Domingo de Guzmn in the south-east region of the country.

Boca Chica was originally developed by Dominican businessman and politician Juan Bautista Vicini Burgos, who established sugar plantations there in the early 1900s. Vicini was very fond of the place but the golden era of Boca Chica came decades later in the 1950s, when dictator Rafael Lenidas Trujillo ordered the construction of a modern hotel named "Hotel Hamaca", which subsequently became an icon in the area. The hotel became more famous after Trujillo granted political asylum to the dictator Fulgencio Batista after the Cuban Revolution. During the 1950s and the 1960s, prominent families of the Dominican Republic built several summer properties along the beach only accessible by private transportation.

After the 1970s, the beach became increasingly more popular and public transportation helped to make Boca Chica a very crowded place; it was no longer a secluded beach for the elites as it had been during the '50s and '60s. The Hamaca hotel was closed after Hurricane David in 1979, and it remained closed and abandoned for more than twenty years which caused an economic decline in the area. It was reopened in the early 1990s, and the public beach remains popular among people of different classes.

Boca Chica's proximity to the city of Santo Domingo, its clear blue waters and white sand have made it one of the busiest beaches in the Dominican Republic, especially on weekends and holidays, because it is 30km away from Santo Domingo. Boca Chica has two small islands Los Pinos, which were made with sand from the dredging of the Andrs port in the 1950s and La Matica and La Piedra, mangrove cays, submerged vascular plants and habitat for various species of birds. The beach has a natural breakwater, as well as a fresh water spring, coming from the Brujuelas underground river.

The short distance from the capital city (19 miles), the crystalline waters and the white sands turned Boca Chica into the most crowded beach of the Dominican Republic, especially on weekends and holidays. Boca Chica beach has immaculate fine sand. You can walk in the water and the depth will barely change, the water will be to your waist (or a little bit over) all the time. Boca Chica has two small islands, Los Pinos and La Matica, and two marinas.

There are several bars, restaurants, pizza stands, souvenirs stalls and loud music throughout most of the day; all this along the beach sand very close to the shore. In the evening, Boca Chica transforms itself into a town of party bars.[6]

A tunnel from South Padre Island to Boca Chica Beach? Elon …

Posted: at 7:38 am

With closures of State Highway 4 and Boca Chica Beach becoming more frequent due to activity at SpaceXs Starbas production complex and launch site, Cameron County officials are mulling ways to restore access to at least part of the beach even during closures.

One possible solution would entail digging a tunnel from the south end of South Padre Island to a point on the north end of Boca Chica Beach, an idea proposed by the Boring Co., owned by SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk.

The Boring Co. has dug one tunnel, in Las Vegas, and the companys representatives responsible for that project met with county administrator Pete Sepulveda Jr. and county engineer Benjamin Worsham about a month and a half ago.

So far, the idea hasnt gone further than a presentation by the Boring Co., Sepulveda said.

From what we understand from SpaceX is there is a good portion of the beach that can remain open if there was access to it, even though the road is closed and even though a portion of the beach is closed, Sepulveda said.

A tunnel would provide access to Starbase for SpaceX personnel who live on the island or in the Laguna Madre area, and allow the public to access the portion of Boca Chica north of State Highway 4, though the Boring Co. would have to find a way to pay for it, he said.

The 1.7-mile tunnel known as the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop cost $52 million to build. The distance between the southern tip of Isla Blanca Park and the northern tip of Boca Chica Beach is about a third of a mile.

[Paying for it] is not something that the county would be interested in, Sepulveda said. That would be prohibitive for us. We really didnt get into those details, but once we do we wouldnt be able to participate with any type of funding.

The proposal is just a concept for now; an in-depth study would be needed to determine whether a tunnel is even feasible or not, he said.

Keep in mind that the ship channel goes by there, so that depth would have to be pretty far down, Sepulveda said.

Boring Co. presenters seemed quite confident they could tackle the project, he added.

They did to me, Sepulveda said. Thats way above my understanding, but with technology today you can get pretty creative.

The next step would be to sit down with the Boring Co. for more specific discussions, he said, noting that the county is also exploring the possibility of a ferry service between the Island and Boca Chica Beach. Building a new road to Boca Chica is another potential solution, though Sepulveda said it would be tough to accomplish.

Understand the sensitivity of the environment in that area, he said. Perhaps doing a tunnel is one way to impact the environment a lot less than doing a surface-level road or bridge. Again, the whole gist of it is what are our options to provide access to the north end of Boca Chica Beach.

With activity at the SpaceX site continuing to pick up in preparation for the first orbital flight of a Starship prototype and closures becoming more frequent, theres plenty of impetus for the county to find some way to restore access to at least part of the beach.

I think were willing to work with SpaceX just to look at what options, solutions, are out there, Sepulveda said. Im not sure what amount, if any, we can bring to the table financially.
