Report: Hurricanes owner says team is working on in-arena sports gambling – CBS17.com
Posted: September 29, 2021 at 6:39 am
FILE In this , Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019 file photo, Tom Dundon, majority owner of the Carolina Hurricanes talks to the media about his $250 million investment in the Alliance of American Football league before the start of an NHL hockey game between the New York Rangers and the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C. Tom Dundon is now sole owner of the Carolina Hurricanes after buying out the remaining shares of the NHL club held by Peter Karmanos and others. The leagues board of governors unanimously approved the transaction Wednesday, June 30, 2021. (AP Photo/Chris Seward, File)
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) It seems like its a matter of when, not if the Carolina Hurricanes roll out an in-arena sportsbook.
In a column in The Athletic, Pierre LeBrun wrote about a conversation he had with Hurricanes general manager Tom Dundon ahead of the 2021-22 season. One of the topics touched on was growing the organizations business through sports betting, much like the Washington Capitals recently have.
Yeah, were working on it, Dundon told LeBrun.
Dundon went on to explain he thinks in-arena betting options will be something all 32 teams eventually implement.
I think everyone is going to have it eventually. Its just about when, for the most part, because it seems to be legal in many states and on its way in others, Dundon told LeBrun. Were hopeful its something (the state wants) to do.
North Carolina lawmakers must first legalize sports gambling. A bill passed the state Senate on Aug. 19, but has not yet been voted on in the state House.
Sen. Jim Perry (R-Lenoir), one of the lead sponsors of the bill, has been showing other members how easy it is currently for anyone to go online and place bets. Nearby states, including Virginia and Tennessee, already have legalized sports betting.
He said it makes sense for North Carolina to regulate it and generate tax revenue. Hed like to see that money targeted to low-income school districts, though he said current legislators cant tie the hands of future legislators when it comes to earmarking that money.
John Rustin, president of the North Carolina Family Policy Council, has been an outspoken opponent of the bill, urging the legislature not to expand legalized gambling.
All of those social issues, those problems that come along with gambling are what were truly concerned about, he said. Obviously because its a gambling bill, there is massive financial interest behind this legislation.

Tennessee sports betting revenue falls to record low of $10.1m in August | Sports betting – iGaming Business

6 of the Best Sports Betting Stocks to Watch – WTOP

Top sports betting stocks to watch.
Once the initial days of the coronavirus pandemic were in the rearview mirror, the sports betting industry came to life. As Americans found themselves stuck at home, idle hands eventually found their way to wagering. Since debuting in June 2020, the Roundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF (ticker: BETZ) is up 97%. Three years after a Supreme Court decision paved the way for any state to legalize sports betting, roughly half the U.S. population lives in such states, and that proportion is growing. With so much momentum behind the trend, here are six of the best sports betting stocks to watch.
DraftKings Inc. (DKNG)
DraftKings is arguably the most recognizable online sports betting brand, and it has the market value to match, with a valuation above $20 billion. Since the end of its first day of trading after going public via a special-purpose acquisition company in April 2020, the stock is up 165%. Analysts still cant get enough of DKNG, with a consensus price target of $71.15 representing nearly 40% upside. The company has been making aggressive moves to shore up its position in the space, becoming the NFLs sports betting partner, announcing the acquisition of Golden Nugget Online Gaming Inc. (GNOG) in August, and reportedly pursuing a $20 billion bid to buy Entain, a large sports betting company based in the U.K.
Flutter Entertainment (PDYPY, PDYPF)
The name of the parent company might not ring a bell, but at a market capitalization of $37 billion, Flutter Entertainment is the single most valuable sports betting company out there. Its portfolio of brands includes PokerStars, Paddy Power Betfair and the daily fantasy betting giant FanDuel. In fact, FanDuel is the single biggest competitor to DraftKings, and the company touts a 45% market share in the U.S. online sportsbook segment. Flutter acquired the parent company of PokerStars in 2020. But not counting that acquisition, the company still reported 28% revenue growth in the first half of 2021 from the same period a year before. With more states legalizing sports betting, the company expects to start cranking out positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in 2023.
Penn National Gaming Inc. (PENN)
A more traditional gaming company than either of the first two names on this list, Penn National has a bricks-and-mortar presence in 20 states, where it operates slot machines, table games, and live sports betting and racing. PENN is quickly adapting to the brave new world of online sports betting, however, acquiring a 36% stake in lifestyle, media and digital sports company Barstool Sports in 2020 for $163 million. It quickly used the power of that brand, with a devoted audience of 66 million, to launch the Barstool Sportsbook app in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Illinois. Still anxious to expand its market share in online gaming, it announced the $2 billion acquisition of Score Media and Gaming in August, which will give PENN a strong foothold in the Canadian mobile sports betting market and make this stock an all-around bet on North American sports wagering.
Caesars Entertainment Inc. (CZR)
Are any of the biggest sports betting companies not on a buying spree? Consolidation is the name of the game in this industry, and Caesars has clearly gotten the memo. Caesars itself merged with Eldorado Resorts in an $18 billion deal in July 2020. Two months later, the combined company announced an agreement to buy U.K.-based bookmaker William Hill for $3.7 billion. In September, the company announced the sale of the non-U.S. assets of William Hill for about $3 billion, keeping its focus on the domestic sports betting market. The $23 billion Caesars is on the right track at the moment, exceeding analyst expectations in 2021 as the stock is up more than 40% year to date. The company is highly leveraged, a sword that cuts both ways, but analysts have quintupled their expectations for fiscal 2022 profits in the last five months alone.
Churchill Downs Inc. (CHDN)
At $9 billion, Churchill Downs is no small fry, but it is the least valuable company on this list. The company behind the famed Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs is also the most tried-and-true member of this list, with corporate origins in 1928. CHDN is certainly more niche than its peers on this list, with its operations revolving around horse racing and the betting accompanying it. But the company also has casinos in eight states and operates one of the most profitable U.S. online sportsbooks, TwinSpires, which books wagers on all the major sports, as well as the horses. Up more than 20% in 2021, CHDN stock is on the comeback, logging record net revenues in the second quarter. Analysts expect earnings per share of $6.09 in 2021, up from 83 cents in 2020.
MGM Resorts International (MGM)
Casino powerhouse MGM, at $22 billion, also deserves a spot on this list. It recently announced the launch of its mobile sports betting app, BetMGM, in Wyoming, making it the 14th U.S. market to offer both mobile and online BetMGM experiences. In a sign of the markets rapid consolidation, MGM may actually be able to nix DraftKings potential deal to acquire Entain. Thats because Entain has an exclusive partnership with MGM in the U.S. online sports betting market, where BetMGM is actually a 50-50 joint venture between MGM and Entain. As such, MGM may have the ability to prevent a competitor from muscling further into online sports betting or could secure some other form of lucrative remuneration from DraftKings to waive the exclusive partnership. The stock has roughly doubled over the past year.

Q&A With Arizona Rep. Alma Hernandez on Sports Betting – Bookies.com
Posted: at 6:39 am
Its been more than four months since Arizona House Bill 2772 cleared the state legislature, paving the way for Arizona sports betting to begin.
The bill was co-sponsored by Arizona Reps. Alma Hernandez, Jeff Weninger, Shawnna Bolick, Cesar Chavez, David Cook, Daniel Hernandez, Jennifer Jermaine, Becky Nutt, Ben Toma, Sonny Borrelli and Thomas Shope - with Democratic and Republican members of the Arizona House of Representatives coming together to champion the cause.
Bookies.com talked with Rep. Alma Hernandez, who represents the 3rd district, which includes Tucson and other parts of northwest Pima County, about the legislation and the initial rollout of sports betting in the state.
The second-term Democrat expressed satisfaction with the bipartisan legislation, as well as the response shes heard from members of the Pascua Yaqui tribe, which is located within her district. The Q&A has been edited for brevity and clarity.
Last week, the Arizona Department of Gaming posted its sports betting catalog, advising users what they can wager on at sportsbooks and through sports betting apps.
RELATED: Two Weeks In, Arizona Sports Betting Isnt Slowing Down
Bookies.com: Five months after you sponsored legislation along with the other lawmakers, why did you think sports betting was important for Arizona?
Alma Hernandez: First and foremost, I represent the Pascua Yaqui reservation, which is one of the tribes here in Arizona. And they were very supportive of this. They were supporting this bill all along. So being that I represent the area, I felt that if the tribe that I represent is supporting this and thinks that would it be a good thing, not only for the tribe, but for Arizona and bringing in more revenue, I decided that I wanted to be a co-sponsor.
Rep. Jeff Weninger is a friend of mine. He has previously tried to pass bills of this nature. And I know that it was important to him, and he really wanted to get this done.
And it was done in a bipartisan way, as I'm sure you noticed. The vote was very bipartisan. And after knowing that we have the green light from the tribes in Arizona, and especially from the tribe in my district, I decided that it was something that I could support. Not only were the tribes on board, but many fans and many folks in the community who were very interested in seeing this getting done finally were too.
Bookies: Thoughts on how HB-2772 impacts Indian tribes in the state so far?
Hernandez: Its very new. Were only a month in since we were able to legally do this. The Pascua Yaqui did not receive a license, but they were in support of this. And, quite honestly, it's very early, but I know there's a lot of excitement around [sports betting in Arizona] right now.
Anytime I log into social media, people are either talking about it, or I'm getting ads on social media promoting [sports betting].
I think its great when Arizonas leading the way, or doing things like other states, and I believe we're the 26th state to adopt this. So, we needed to get with the program, and I'm happy to see it finally happening.
And obviously it brings in, you know, it's estimated, I believe they said its $34.2 million or something, that we're expecting in general funds that we'll get out of this.
So that's obviously great for Arizona. And I know that the tribes will also benefit from this as well.
So, for me, it was a step in the right direction, doing something just to get on the same level as every other state that's doing this. And in Arizona we have great sports teams. And I know that people, again, are very excited to be able to do this finally.
Bookies: How has the sports betting rollout process gone in your opinion, versus what you expected when you helped sponsor HB-2772?
Hernandez: Of course. When this all started, I wasn't a part of the negotiation. But I came in after that. But I know that there were many people that were trying to figure out, OK, what is this going to look like?
So, I know many people that have downloaded the apps on their phone and are now currently betting on different games. So, it seems to me that the rollout has been great. I think it's working out.
RELATED: Q&A with Arizona State Rep. Jeff Weninger On Sports Betting
I haven't heard of any major issues with it. I know that people are still excited to sign up. So, I know that there's a lot of excitement around it. I think it's gone smooth so far. I think that people are very pleased that they're able to finally do this in Arizona.
So, I think it's going to be a positive thing for our state. And I think this is just a very exciting thing for some people and then being able to do it here legally is a great thing to see.
Bookies: Does the strong response to legal sports betting from Arizonans give you a sense of satisfaction, as a co-sponsor of HB-2772?
Hernandez: Most definitely. I'm not an expert on sports, I used to play women's league soccer, but that's about it. But I have so many friends that are so excited to be able to do this now. And it's still the same rules that apply: you have to be 21, and there are rules around how you can do this.
So, it's not like they're doing something that's not legal, it's completely legal. And now they're able to do it. And they're excited to be able to bet on their favorite teams and do all of that.
So, I think the response from the state and really, constituents, has been really positive. I think overall, this is a great step. For us, it's a great way for us to bring in more revenue for the state.
It was done in a very bipartisan way. Yes, negotiations took a while. And many, many people were involved at the roundtable for this, but it finally got done. And I know that people are very excited to see this happen. So, I'm really looking forward to that next year when we go into the next fiscal year and seeing what that looks like for Arizona, and how people have reacted to [sports betting], and what they are doing to participate.
Bookies: What should Arizonans know about the work that went on behind the scenes in getting legal sports betting legislation off the ground in Arizona?
Hernandez: I wasn't a part of all these committee hearings and the meetings that they had to be able to work out negotiations with the tribal communities, and with the governor's office, but I do know, it was not easy.
It took a lot of a lot of working, a lot of compromising and being in a place where you had everyone in the room that was going to be impacted by this and figuring out the best solutions.
And those solutions were figured out. And we finally were able to come up with a compromise. And really got it across the finish line with broad support on both sides.
So, I was really excited about it. I know that my colleague [Rep. Jeff Weninger] worked hard for this. He was passionate about it. He's been wanting to do this for years. And finally getting it done, I know was not an easy thing. But it was done collaboratively with the support of the of the tribal nations, which is obviously very important when we're talking about making any changes to the tribal compact.

‘Resident Evil 4’ Will Be Playable in Virtual Reality Next Month – HYPEBEAST
Posted: September 27, 2021 at 6:14 pm
Resident Evil 4will be available to play in VR on Facebooks Oculus Quest 2 beginning October 21, the company announced on Monday.
The survival-horror game, which was originally released on Nintendo GameCube in 2005 with a third-person view, will now be playable from a first-person perspective for the first time. Players can engage in gameplay in both seated and standing positions using the Oculus Touch controllers. VP of content atFacebook Reality Labs Mike Verdu claims the game will bring new richness and depth to the Resident Evil experience you know and love.
Resident Evil 4s move into VR, which was first announced in April, will be exclusive to the Quest 2, meaning the game will not be playable on Facebooks original Oculus Quest.
Along with the official release dates announcement, Oculus shared a new gameplay trailer for the virtual reality title, showcasing how the gaming company re-engineered the popular games standard set-up to accommodate for first-person movement.
Players will still be able to move using the analog stick; however, gaming company Armature Studio included a full upper-body rig on top of Leons character to integrate his in-game interactions with the dual-handed connection achieved with the Oculus Touch controllers. Additionally, weapons and items have been recreated as physical objects that players can pick up and interact with, and instead of flipping through a menu to switch out weapons, players can simply grab them off their bodies.
Take a look at the gameplay trailer above.

The future is now for School of Nursing and Population Health students learning through virtual reality – University of New England

Virtual reality (VR) is helping to transform the way we teach our next generation of health care providers.
UNE was the first in the country to use the Oxford Medical Simulation (OMS) state-of-the-art virtual reality program, giving students in the School of Nursing and Population Health realistic experiences treating patients.
The VR training was recently featured on NEWS CENTER Maine.
"It does allow us to screen for more critical cases where we need to do interventions and call providers, Kathleen Humphries, (Nursing, 22) told NEWS CENTER Maine.
The use of VR training for students is especially important now. Because of the COVID-19 protocols, it is more difficult getting students into hospitals and schools for hands-on training.
"With the challenges of COVID-19, oftentimes those units are closed to our students for learning, so being able to get the experience through virtual reality has been a huge benefit," Dawn-Marie Dunbar, M.S.N./Ed., director of the Interprofessional Simulation and Innovation Center, said.
This immersive virtual reality platform advances students educational experience by allowing them to practice treating patients in a simulated, virtual environment, enhancing skills such as clinical reasoning, decision making, and patient/team communication.
This additional opportunity for structured practice results in increased learner competence and confidence in managing complex care.
After the students run through a scenario, they get immediate feedback on any mistakes they may have made.
"A lot of times we can go back in and redo the scenario and it's a good opportunity to really learn," Katy Hancock, (Nursing, 22) commented to NEWS CENTER Maine.
UNE is the only institution in Northern New England offering students training on the OMS program.

T-7A Red Hawk team using virtual reality to certify, verify TOs – Aerotech News
Posted: at 6:14 pm
The Air Force is looking to use three-dimensional models and virtual reality to certify and verify technical orders for the T-7A Red Hawk advanced pilot trainer.
Faced with the daunting challenge of verifying the accuracy and usability of over 1100 maintenance tasks in a seven-month period, the team hopes to continue the digital trend with this fully digitally designed aircraft.
The goal is to align with the Air Force Materiel Command Digital Campaign where the desire is to create a collaborative, integrated digital environment that guides, orchestrates, and delivers the means for each individual across the enterprise to access the data, functions, and elements needed to do his or her job in a purely digital manner, said Fred Tschirner, T-7A Virtual Reality (VR) Team Lead. We have 13 personnel and 3 aircraft which makes this a pretty high-risk effort and requires an out-of-the-box approach.
Collaborating with their Boeing Company counterparts, the Technical Order (TO) Team was forced to look for mitigations to reduce the risk of failure. The team considered several options, including the use of prototype aircraft and the use of instrumented test aircraft. Unfortunately, nothing was acceptable based on current guidance and policy. Finally, The Boeing Company suggested the use of their virtual reality lab.
The idea of completing tasks that are traditionally completed on a production representative aircraft, in a virtual environment, was met with differing levels of skepticism. However, the team agreed to evaluate this opportunity with an open mind, Tschirner said.
The T-7A TO Team evaluated the Boeing Integrated Development Center (IDC) or VR lab that is operated in St. Louis, Missouri.
The IDC consists of multiple systems, but we focused our evaluation on the HTC Vive gaming platform. It is a relatively inexpensive platform but the capabilities of this system provides the best support for our verification effort, Tschirner said.
The team conducted an evaluation of 11 maintenance tasks in both the virtual environment and on aircraft. These tasks consisted of non-complex (i.e., doors and panels) to complex (i.e., engine removal). Utilizing a blind study process, two independent teams one team in the IDC and one team on aircraft were established with no interaction during tests. As well as, no discussion until each element completed all tasks in their respective environments.
Team members Christopher Teague and Master Sgt. Bryan Holloway worked on the actual aircraft. Bill Dean, Orlando Mack, Norman Watts, and Staff Sgt. Jacob Hamblen worked with the virtual tools while Tech. Sgt. Kyle Porter provided an in-depth technical evaluation of procedures.
We determined that due to system maturity, only non-complex tasks like opening/closing doors and removal/installation of panels that do not have wires/coaxial cables attached can be completed at this time, Tschirner said.
The aircraft has 144 doors and panels with around 110 of those considered candidates for virtual verification. Currently, there are between 1100 and 1287 tasks to be verified by performance. This equates to approximately 8 to 10 percent of the performance tasks.
The current T-7 verification schedule is very aggressive, according to Tschirner. So even utilizing the Boeing IDC for non-complex tasks will save valuable on-aircraft time.
We will also mitigate a portion of the program risk associated with completing time-constrained technical order certification/verification effort, and advance the Air Force initiatives regarding digital engineering, he said.
Currently, the TO Team received approval to complete verification of the approximately 110 performance tasks. Is working towards the development of a new VR verification process. Updates to the T-7A Technical Order Life Cycle Management and Technical Order Life Cycle Verification Plans will further define and clarify these program processes. Submittal of TO 00-5-3 policy change requests will provide recommendations toward achieving the Air Forces vision for digital engineering, and the establishment of VR verification policy and guidance for the service.
