Drexel’s new Center for Law and Transformational Technology will focus on legal issues in emerging tech – Technical.ly
Posted: September 10, 2021 at 5:37 am
Drexel UniversitysKline School of Law today announced its new Center for Law and Transformational Technology (CLTT), a group of researchers and resources focused on the legal issues emerging from the tech industry.
The center will bring together researchers and industry leaders from law and tech backgrounds to strategize on the legal framework surrounding tech innovation, especially in newer disciplines like blockchain, AI and cryptocurrencies.
Professor Jordan Fischer will head the center as its director. Shes a Kline graduate, and has been been teaching at the school since 2015. She also runs a private law practice with a focus on international data privacy, cybersecurity and cross-border data management, with an emphasis in European Union data privacy regulations.
CLTTs creation came about from a combination of emerging technologies that prompted legal research and existing technologies prevalence in our everyday lives, Fischer told Technical.ly.
Its the recognition of the increasing impact and role of technology in business and in our individual lives, and also the recognition that law has a pivotal role to play into that dialogue, she said.
At its launch, the center has a few major initiatives, or areas of focus: risk management and design thinking, ethics and legal implications of AI, and genetic data and privacy. The center will host programming like symposiums and roundtables to bring together tech industry experts, students and attorneys. Its aim, Daniel Filler, dean of the law school said, is to foster a community that is forward-thinking about the implications of innovative technology on the development of technology law.
New technology has made a dramatic impact on the human experience in everything from markets to health care, to the way we spend our free time, Filler said in a statement. The Center will bring together experts to help promote law and regulation that protects individuals and communities while allowing these advances to flourish.
Fisher said that an advantage of the CLTT being established at Drexel is its ability to help Philadelphia in its continued growth in becoming a tech industry city. The center could partner with tech-oriented groups in Philly and beyond and providing resources where needed, she said.
Eight faculty from the law school will work on the CLTT, and it will host its first event, Non-fungible tokens rocking the art world and beyond, later this month.
This is an incredibly evolutionary time in the law around privacy, data security, and technology, Fischer said. And creating a center that supports thought leadership on the role of law in the future of technology is critical at this time.

Founded in 2003, the Confluence Academy public charter school system in St. Louis prides itself on providing a high-caliber education in an urban setting for children from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade.
The academys South City Campus opened in 2006 and now accommodates nearly 800 students. Reflective of the community it serves, the South City location boasts a diverse enrollment of children, many of whom identify as Hispanic, along with students hailing from Haiti, Vietnam and other countries from throughout the world.
When I came here in 2008, about 12% of our school population was Hispanic, says Dr. Pamela Davenport, South City Campus Principal. Now, were right at 50% Hispanic students, about one-third of whom speak English as a second language.
Our campus does a great job of providing culturally relevant educational experiences for our students and families, says Deniece Kemp, a second grade teacher at South City. We see this in our yearly Hispanic Heritage month celebration where each grade level studies different SouthAmerican countries for the month, ending it with a celebration that invites families to come and bring their favorite dishes while the students display special projects from their studies.
We also host two books and breakfast programs, she continues. We offer Leyendo Con La Familia forourHispanic families to have breakfast withstudents while they read books in Spanish with them. The I See Me Literacy Programallows families to come have breakfast with their students while readingdiverse books that have characters that reflect our student base. Both programs are held monthly and families leave with a book to add to their home libraries.
Davenport credits this growth to the efforts of the schools Hispanic-student recruiter, and also to word-of-mouth recommendations from among the tight-knit local community in recent years.
Confluence Academys South City Campus maintains two facilities for classes the primary building on Compton for pre-K through second grade, and the main building on Meramec for third through eighth grade. All told, the campus supports around 800 students and 90 teachers, including seven ESL teachers and five learning specialists on staff.
With our large Hispanic population, the goal is to offer our students the opportunity to be bilingual by the time they complete eighth grade, Davenport explains. Providing Spanish classes benefits all of our students and especially our Hispanic students to make sure they have a good foundation in their home language as they grow up.
In addition to dedicated language instruction, South City Campus students receive exposure to modern technology through Chromebooks provided for every student from pre-K through eighth grade to supplement in-class and at-home learning.
One-to-one technology helps build access to learning materials and other research-based instructional programs in literacy and math.
We also have a computer coding class and other computer-based curriculum for students in grades 6, 7 and 8 through a project called Lead the Way, Davenport adds. Our teachers use smartboards in the classroom, and we have an instructional technology coach who works with our staff to utilize these tools in ways that best enhance learning for our students.
Outside the classroom, students have a lot of additional opportunities to achieve a well-rounded educational experience at the South City Campus through a list of extracurricular offerings that includes basketball, soccer, volleyball, dance, cheerleading, step, robotics, a newspaper club and art camps.
Girl Scouts has been very popular for us in the past few years, Davenport notes. We also partner with some community resources and organizations likeWings of Love and Care Center to help students who need assistance with school supplies, uniforms and food pick-ups.
After they complete eighth grade, South City Campus students go on to attend many local high schools in the area, including Grand Center Arts Academy, with many even being recruited for their academic achievement.
We really just want to give our students all the tools and support they need to succeed, Davenport says.

Global Display Library Technologies and Affiliated Services Market to 2030 by Type of Technology, Type of Molecule, and Regions -…
Posted: at 5:37 am
DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "Display Library Technologies and Affiliated Services Market by Type of Technology, Type of Molecule, and Key Geographical Regions, Industry Trends and Global Forecasts: 2021-2030" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.
This report features an extensive study of the current landscape of display library technologies and services market and the future opportunities associated with such technologies. It features an in-depth analysis, highlighting the capabilities of various stakeholders engaged in this domain.
Biologics are one of the fastest growing classes of therapeutics in the pharmaceutical industry. However, the development of such large molecule drugs is inherently complex, involving elaborate target selection and validation, hit generation, lead selection/optimization and characterization protocols. Of the aforementioned steps, hit (potential drug candidates against validated biological targets) generation is a highly resource-intensive process. In fact, it is estimated that an average of 18 months is spent in generating hits against a validated target.
Additionally, there is an approximate 25% chance of failure in the hit generation to lead identification phase of drug discovery. Over time, a variety of methods/approaches have been developed for the generation of viable therapeutic leads; these include the hybridoma technology, B-cell cloning, transgenic animal-based techniques, in vitro display methods (using phages, ribosomes, mRNA, and cDNA) and cell surface display methods (involving mammalian, yeast, and bacterial cells). Despite being responsible for the development of several successful therapies, the hybridoma and B-cell based hit generation techniques are limited in several aspects; for instance, drugs/drug candidates developed using the aforementioned technologies are often highly immunogenic, and developers also find it difficult to develop and produce stable molecules with noteworthy affinities for their respective targets. As a result, innovator companies have demonstrated a preference for some of the relatively newer hit generation methods, which involve the use of display-libraries.
In modern medical research, display libraries have been successfully employed for the generation of various novel therapeutics and offer certain advantages over conventional drug screening methods, including (but not limited to) the ability to facilitate large-scale, high throughput screening, incorporation of greater diversity in viable lead identification, and eliminating the threat of possible immune response to pharmacological candidates identified through this approach. Out of the available display technologies, those based on phages are the most popular, primarily owing to the simplicity of the selection method they offer and the fact that they can be used to generate hits against several complex antigens.

PREVIEW: Rockford schools return to in-person learning this year but technology is making a dramatic comeback – WREX-TV
Posted: at 5:37 am
ROCKFORD (WREX) Something we all learned last year is that school is much more than a place to learn. It's a place where teachers can collaborate with one another and where students can get the support they may need. But during COVID-19, technology became that place to learn, that place to connect and that place to get answers.
Some students and staff blossomed in the new digital age while others sat at the computer screen confused.
Rockford Public Schools Educational Technology Director Susan Uram says it was all about working with what they had.
"Last year our hand was forced and we knew that what we were doing, in terms of remote and screen time, weren't necessarily what was best for kids but what we had to do," said Uram.
Each experience might have had different outcomes last year but the 2021-2022 school year is looking to get back on track even when it comes to the use of technology.
"I think one of our important takeaways was understanding that there had to be a balance. When we are in school, it's not about individual screen time. Nothing can replace that teacher, that collaboration, that communication in the classroom," said Uram.
Another school trying to find balance this year is Galapagos Rockford Charter School.
"Now it just seems natural and so the great thing is that we are now providing services and expanding our services well beyond what we could have done before," said CEO of Galapagos Rockford Charter School Michael Lane.
Eighth grader Allanna Roberson says she appreciates the expanded technology in the classroom this year because she considers herself a computer wiz. She says she even helps per parents from time to time.
"Moving forward, I feel like technology would be a big part of our learning process at school, but we kind of got there earlier than we probably would have since the pandemic happened," said Roberson, a Galapagos student.
Even though the pandemic may have catapulted society into a new digitalized world, bringing those skills and those technologies back to the classroom comes with some big questions and a new path to navigate.
"Actually focus on trying to move us all forward and use the technology in a better way and a smarter way," said RPS 205 Educational Technologies Innovation Teacher Dallas Turner.
Tune in to 13 News at 5 and 10 p.m. on Thursday to learn more on how schools are balancing a year where technology is making a dramatic comeback.

ABC News reports on technology in wildland firefighting – Wildfire Today
Posted: at 5:37 am
In many cases, were still fighting fire with sharpened pieces of metal attached to the ends of sticks, said Bill Gabbert.
Here are excerpts from an article published September 8 by ABC News.
As wildfires in California and beyond have grown larger and deadlier in recent years, some in the firefighting sector say the tools and technologies used to combat new blazes have not kept up with the impact ofclimate changes fury.
In many cases, were still fighting fire with sharpened pieces of metal attached to the ends of sticks, Bill Gabbert, who worked as a full-time firefighter for more than 30 years before becoming managing editor of the industry publication Wildfire Today, told ABC News. Hand crews, using hand tools and chainsaws to remove the fuel on the edge of a fire so the fire burns up to that area where there is no fuel and then it stops spreading, thats how we put out fires.
Some major technological leaps, including computer modeling simulators have been made to help assist firefighters, but funding and bureaucratic hurdles in many cases have prevented their widespread adoption in communities that may need them. Meanwhile, a handful of entrepreneurs see the blank space as a ripe opportunity for new innovations they say can ultimately help save lives as the West now grapples with some ofits largest fires ever recorded.
[]
Jon Heggie, a battalion chief at Cal Fire, told ABC News that many fire agencies in recent years have explored emerging technologies as a way to address issues that arise in firefighting, noting how Gov. Gavin Newsom of California put out a call for innovative ideas to create cutting-edge firefighting technology infall 2019.
One of the results of this effort and really, the one that stands out, according to Heggie was the creation and adoption of a computer modeling service that predicts a fires spread developed by the Bellevue, Washington-based firm Technosylva.
MORE: Nevada records worst air quality on record as wildfire smoke spreadsThe software integrates weather, topography, fuel (combustable material) and more to give us a real-time estimation of fire growth over a given period of time, Heggie said.
Anytime there is a fire started anywhere in California, a simulation is started so that the field commanders have that real-time information from the minute a fire starts, he added. It populates that fire based on where the fire was reported, that may not be accurate of where the fire actually is, so when the first arriving engines get on scene, they give a more updated report of location and then another report is generated and that will be more accurate.
The data is critical for giving early evacuation notifications to communities that could be in the path of the fire, as well as for decision-making on how to best combat a blaze.

World Health Organization Recognizes Kinnos as Innovative Health Technology – Business Wire
Posted: at 5:37 am
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized Kinnos Highlight bleach colorant as an innovative technology in their 2021 compendium, WHO Compendium of Innovative Health Technologies for Low-Resource Settings. The Compendium selects technologies with immediate or future impact on COVID-19 and general health outcomes and brings global healthcare awareness and procurement channels to such products. Highlight for Liquid Bleach was selected for its ability to help providers correctly use disinfection . . . thus reducing contamination and improving safety.
Highlight colors the liquid bleach and disinfecting wipes that hospitals worldwide depend on to clean surfaces, letting users visualize disinfection coverage instantly. The color lends visibility, reinforces training, and then fades to remind users their disinfectant is still working. In more than one critical healthcare situation, it prevented use of incorrectly mixed or expired bleach products since its color fades only if healthcare-strength bleach is utilized.
WHO-assembled expert panels judged nominees on their superior ability over existing products to solve a substantial health problem in low-resource settings. In developing countries, healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) affect 1 out of every 10 hospital patients and 1 of every 3 surgeries. Better disinfection is a proven method to reduce the pain, mortality, and financial burdens of HAIs. The WHO noted that several peer-reviewed studies prove Highlight quantifiably improves disinfection technique.
Effective infection prevention requires not just the disinfectant, but also technique in how those disinfectants are used, said Jason Kang, Kinnos CEO and co-inventor. Yet the status quo makes it virtually impossible to ensure thorough disinfection as its currently an invisible process with transparent disinfectants, you cant see what youve missed. Were making that easier, in a way that transcends language barriers.
Our product was first developed to protect Ebola healthcare workers in West Africa, so this recognition by the World Health Organization really honors our origins and our passion for global health, Kang pointed out.
Kinnos Highlight products are available internationally, and AMG Medical distributes in Canada while Armstrong Medical distributes to all US Veteran Agencies. Highlight for Bleach Wipes now gives hospitals the same ability to visualize coverage of ready-to-use disinfectant wipes, and the innovation will extend to other popular disinfectants next year.
About Kinnos
Kinnos pioneers color technology that revolutionizes how we use disinfectants. The company's flagship product, Highlight, is a patented and award-winning color additive platform that improves disinfection technique and compliance. Highlight's real-time color visualization has been reported in independent studies and whitepapers to consistently increase thoroughness of cleaning. Recognized by Harvard Innovations Lab, Forbes, Newsweek, USAID, the USPTO Humanity Award, and more, Highlight is used internationally by hospitals, first responders, and transit agencies. Kinnos is headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. For more information, visit: http://www.kinnos.com
