What is radical federalism, what would it look like and should Labour back it? – LabourList

Posted: September 10, 2021 at 5:54 am

What isradicalfederalism, what would it look like and should Labour champion it? This is what Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin, Welsh Labours Mick Antoniw MS and Professor Nicola McEwen discussed this week at a panel event by LabourList and UK in a Changing Europe.

Scottish Labours Anas Sarwar said: Whether we call it radical federalism or not, lets push for further devolution, not as some kind of quick political fix, but because we mean it and we are truly the champions of devolution.

He warned people against seeing Scotland as some kind of monolith where all the views are the same in all parts of Scotland, when in fact we actually need to push power out of Holyrood into local communities.

He said Scottish Labours position on the constitution should not be seen as a compromise, saying: If we present it as a compromise, then I think it wont feel like were truly arguing for something because we truly believed it or we thought it was going to make a meaningful difference.

Sarwar shared his view that Labour has a culture issue around devolution, factionalism and defeatism. If theres any factional bullshit, keep it out of Scotland. Weve got enough problems of our own, he told the event.

If you want to do factionalism, do it somewhere else, not Scotland. And if you want to factionalism elsewhere, keep the constitution out of it, because the only people that helps is our opposition.

Tracy Brabin, the Labour mayor of West Yorkshire first elected in May, said: Im very excited about devolution, I know its going to be fundamental for our partys future as we rebuild trust.

She explained When I talk about strangers in Whitehall and Westminster making decisions about people in West Yorkshires lives, not knowing or understanding them, actually that could be said too for some colleagues in the Labour Party.

In response to a question on an English parliament, she said: Honestly, this is not what the people of Yorkshire are wanting from me. She added that this is not going to be a priority for me at this moment and she would prefer to talk about the powers mayors could potentially be campaigning for.

Brabin, who is on the board of Labours constitutional commission headed by Gordon Brown, said the former Prime Minister is talking about having a representation for the regional mayors in the House of Lords, which she described as quite exciting.

Mick Antoniw, the MS for Pontypridd, the Counsel General and Minister for the Constitution who is part of the Radical Federalism collective, also spoke. He will soon be overseeing a constitutional commission in Wales, to launched within the coming weeks.

I actually think we have across the UK a crisis in our democracy when 40% of people dont vote in general elections. 50% dont vote in Welsh parliamentary elections, and 60% dont vote in council elections, the Senedd Member said.

Antoniw discussed redefining what the role of Westminster is, suggesting that one of the key issues that has to be resolved is the centralisation of power and concluding that we need to start looking seriously at a bill of rights.

Nicola McEwen, a senior fellow at the UK in a Changing Europe, offered her views on the difference between federalism and confederalism, a Senate of the Regions and Nations as proposed by Gordon Brown, whether federalism would require a referendum and much more.

Is the filibuster unconstitutional? | Opinion | murrayledger.com – Murray Ledger and Times

Posted: at 5:54 am

In the U.S. Senate, a filibuster is a tactic employed by opponents of a proposed law to prevent the measures final passage. The most common practice is extending debate to stall a vote.

Emmet Bondurant, a lawyer for antitrust litigation, thinks the filibuster is unconstitutional.

In a 2011 article in the Harvard Law Schools Journal on Legislation, Bondurant laid out his case for why the filibuster crosses constitutional red lines. Here is some history:

In 1806, the Senate, on the advice of Aaron Burr, tried to clean up its rule book, which was thought to be needlessly complicated. One change it made was to delete the previous question motion. That was the motion senators used to end debate on whatever they were talking about. Burr recommended axing it because it was hardly ever used.

Senators were gentlemen and knew when to stop talking. That was then (LOL).

That was the moment the Senate created the filibuster. It would be three more decades before the first filibuster was used which meant it was five decades after the ratification of the Constitution.

Far from being a matter of high principle, the filibuster appears to be nothing more than an unforeseen and unintended consequence of the elimination of the previous question motion from the rules of the Senate, Bondurant writes.

And even then, filibusters were a rare occurrence. Between 1840 and 1900, there were 16 filibusters. Between 2009 and 2010, there were more than 130. But thats changed. Today, 60 votes are required for just about everything.

At the core of Bondurants argument is a very simple claim: This isnt what the Founders intended. The historical record is clear on that fact. The framers debated requiring a supermajority in Congress to pass anything. The Framers rejected that idea.

The Framers, famously wary of tyranny of the majority, devised a system of governance to protect minority rights and promote deliberation without a filibuster. The Federalist Papers outline how checks and balances, federalism, and other structural mechanisms prevent abuses of power, suppression of minority interests, and reckless government action. The Framers clearly feared tyrannical majorities and an overly powerful legislature. However, even they deemed a supermajority cloture requirement unnecessary, undermining the argument that the filibuster enhances the Senates intended function.

In Federalist 22, Alexander Hamilton attacked the idea of a supermajority Congress, writing that its real operation is to embarrass the administration, to destroy the energy of government, and to substitute the pleasure, caprice or artifices of an insignificant, turbulent or corrupt junta, to the regular deliberations and decisions of a respectable majority.

In Federal 58, James Madison asserted, In all cases where justice or the general good might require new laws to be passed, or active measures to be pursued, the fundamental principle of free government would be reversed. It would be no longer the majority that would rule; the power would be transferred to the minority.

The Constitution prescribes only six instances in which Congress would require more than a majority vote:

1) Impeaching the president

3) Overriding a presidential veto of a bill or order

4) Ratifying treaties and amending the Constitution

5) Established rule of construction

6) To declare a president disabled to carry out duties

Also, the majority vote played into another principle: the compromise over proper representation.

Today, with the filibuster, 21 of the 50 states, representing a fraction of the population, can assemble the 41 votes to stop a majority in the Senate. The supermajority vote requirement, Bondurant argues, upsets the Constitutions Great Compromise carefully crafted balance between the large states and the small states.

Theres also a precedent for the Supreme Court to review congressional rules.

In 1892, in United States v. Ballin, the Supreme Court held that while the Constitution empowers each house to determine its rules of proceedings, it may not by its rules ignore constitutional restraints or violate fundamental rights.

Today the filibuster is being used to massage voter suppression, disenfranchisement and election subversion.

We are now faced with the reality that again senators representing a small percentage of Americans can hold hostage the will of the people.

Yes, the filibuster is unconstitutional, Mr. Manchin (D-W.V.) and Ms. Sinema (D-Ariz.).

5. BetRivers

Bet $50 on Bucs/Cowboys spread, get a $6 free bet for every TD pass the QB you bet on throws. (If you are betting this game with a straight spread, this is the most optimal way to do it; I'm not making a pick myself here but Bucs are better math because Tom Brady has a higher TD pass over/under).

Mike Evans over 63.5 receiving yards, Dak Prescott over 287.5 passing yards and Bucs to win +450. (Fair value is around +400).

Bears +7.5 vs. Rams boosted to +1000, $5 bet. (Opt in required).

I am placing my $25 free bet from last Friday's CFB promo on Najee Harris to win Offensive Rookie of the Year +1000.

Bears +7.5 vs. Rams boosted to +1000, $5 bet. (Opt in required).

1. BetRivers

20% MLB profit boost. (Pick: Yankees-Blue Jays first five innings under 5.5 boosted from -109 to +110).

20% US Open profit boost.

2. DraftKings

50% MLB profit boost.

Five 10% US Open profit boosts.

3. Barstool

Nathan Eovaldi, Freddy Peralta and Adam Wainright all to throw 4+ strikeouts +100. (No direct comparisons for fair value but this is a good number based on their respective over/under odds).

Bet $50 on a team to win the Super Bowl, get $5 per regular-season win. (Opt in; the best value is Chiefs or Bucs because they have the highest over/unders for win totals, but any pick you like is good value here).

Make a $100 NFL bet -200 or longer, get a free NFL jersey.

Bet a $25 single-game parlay, get a $25 free bet if it loses. (Opt in required).

Bet a $20 single-game parlay on Bucs-Cowboys, get a $20 free bet if it loses. (Opt in required).

Bet $20 on Bears-Rams, get a $20 free bet if it loses.

I am placing my $25 free bet from last Friday's CFB promo on Najee Harris to win Offensive Rookie of the Year +1000.

Bears +7.5 vs. Rams boosted to +1000, $5 bet. (Opt in required).

No run in the first inning of Blue Jays-Yankees +120. (Fair value is about -110).

Five 10% U.S. Open boosts.

Weekly 50% MLB profit boost.

Mets and Astros both to win +200. (Fair value is about +163).

Gerrit Cole to throw 8+ strikeouts and Yankees to win +150. (Can't make a straight fair value comparison because Cole's over/under is 8.5 strikouts, but given correlation, plus Yankees' fair value to win being about -210, I like this bet).

MLB Best Bets: Baseball Picks, Predictions, Odds to Consider on DraftKings Sportsbook for September 9 – DraftKings Nation

Posted: at 5:53 am

Its Thursday, and that not only means the weekend is around the corner, it means weve got plenty of baseball on the docket. Ive taken a look at the entire card and I think Ive picked out three winners.

Here are my best MLB bets to consider on DraftKings Sportsbook.

All odds provided by DraftKings Sportsbook and all odds subject to change.

The Phillies are right in the thick of the playoff race, and sit sixth with a 117 wRC+ over the last two weeks. Theyve been crushing the ball, but a poor performance from their bullpen and some inexplicably bad starts from their pitchers that have generally been great this year have set them back a bit. With a lethal combination of offense and shaky pitching, I think this is a good spot for the over.

Ranger Suarez cant realistically be expected to pitch to the numbers hes been pitching to, given he is dealing with a triceps issue, and also considering the Rockies have a good .780 OPS against lefties. Im also very interested in fading Antonio Senzatela on the road, where he has a 4.56 ERA. Both offenses should come out hot here.

The trend of Thursday night overs on this slate will continue with the Yankees and Jays. I dont really need to go into detail on Toronto, which possesses perhaps the best offense in baseball at the moment with a league-leading .848 OPS over the last 14 days and very few strikeouts to be found.

Toronto has also beaten up on lefties this year, and should find a way through Nestor Cortes, Jr., who has regressed in the last few starts after a very fast start to his career as a starting pitcher.

On the other hand, Jose Berrios pitched a lot more like his xERA which rests in the mid-fours in his last outing against Oakland. Berrios career as a Toronto Blue Jays starter hasnt been filled with great outings, posting a 3.53 ERA in April thanks to one really great outing against the Tigers. The rest of the results have been tough to stomach, and I think against a hungry Yankees team, he shouldnt have much fun.

Dont sleep on the Nationals offense in this one, which has ranked 11th in hard-hit rate in the last two weeks and has made contact at around a 76% rate in that span, which is essentially average. They will face a strikeout-reliant righty in Huascar Ynoa on Thursday, whose propensity for allowing exit velocity has caught up to him in recent starts.

Eric Fedde is arguably just as bad with his 4.90 xERA, and he doesnt even have the strikeout upside like Ynoa to redeem himself at just 21.2%. The Braves are a middling offense right now, but they have everything in the world to play for and will run into a very bad pitcher with a talented offense. The Nationals are playing inspired ball. Im going to side with the over here.

Add Barstool To The Growing List Of New Jersey Sportsbooks – NJ Online Gambling

Posted: at 5:53 am

There are now nearly two dozen legal, regulated sportsbooks in New Jersey, with two more potentially arriving in the next week (check back here for updates). The buzz for new sportsbook arrivals varies, of course, but Barstool Sportsbook operated by Penn National Gaming has more of a cross-country reach than most.

So with the launch of their sportsbook in the Garden State this week, we checked in on what makes this one worth adding to a busy sports fans smartphone app list.

We have many unique features for our New Jersey players to enhance their sports betting and online casino experience, Siska Concannon, VP of marketing for Penn Interactive, told NJ Online Gambling. Unlike the other books, we offer same-game plus multi-game parlays. Our players can build parlays their way, by combining multiple bets from the same Parlay+ games plus hundreds of additional bet types from other Parlay+ games available on the Barstool Sportsbook.

Barstools sportsbook features the usual odds boosts as well as unique picks and bet offers from a variety of Barstool Sports personalities. Penn National acquired part-ownership of Barstool Sports in 2020 in order to use the brand for its sportsbook.

The sites trademarked Move The Line phrase is for a feature designed to make it easy to change the point spreads and over/under totals to create alternate lines for those who are confident they still can win even with more challenging lines, which result in bigger payouts.

There also is a mychoice loyalty rewards program which credits every sports bet and online casino play that is made. The potential for access to exclusive events and experiences at more than 40 retail destinations across the country is particularly appealing to Stoolies who have an affinity for the product outside of the gambling realm.

Another feature that may not appeal to a professional bettor, but likely will appeal to devotees, is the shareable betslip option that sends your bets to various social media channels or to pals through text messages. Supporters of your picks can then quickly click to make the same bet on their account.

Of course, there is the inevitable in New Jersey, anyway signup bonus. This one is for a first-time, risk-free sports bet of up to $1,000, as well as 24 hours of online casino play at no risk for up to $1,000.

Concannon said, Our marketing strategy is unique while we will be investing in targeted and strategic paid advertising, our amplification strategy is heightened by the power of our media partner.

He then added, Barstool Sports is a content marketing master and understands the sports and gambling audience better than any other media operator in the market. Because of this, we are able to focus our efforts on delivering best-in-class promotions for our players, strategic advertising opportunities, unique experiences, and events to all level of players, as well as a world class VIP program. We are excited to deliver even more enhanced offers and unique money cant buy experiences for our New Jersey players.

Barstool debuted its sportsbook in Pennsylvania in 2020 and added online casino there earlier this year. There, the Barstool site offers information such as Betting Stats and Trends and Implied Win Probability.

Other 2021 Barstool launches have come in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Colorado, Virginia, Tennessee, and as of this week Arizona. All are sportsbook-only to start except for Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Michigan. More states are likely to be added later this year, Concannon said.

Every sportsbook in New Jersey must have an Atlantic City casino or state racetrack as a partner, and Barstool is teaming up with Freehold Raceway, which can add two additional partners at any point. That harness racing track opened a sportsbook last year with the branding of Parx, a Philadelphia-area racetrack and casino.

Are any changes afoot at Freehold, then?

Not at this stage, Concannon said, Freehold remains an important operation for us under the current structure, and we are looking forward to its ongoing success.

NASCAR Best Bets: Motorsports Picks, Odds to Consider on DraftKings Sportsbook for the Federated Auto Parts 4 – DraftKings Nation

Posted: at 5:53 am

Last week was close at Darlington. Both picks to win the race almost won, but almost does not pay. Richmond suits the same drivers, but the payouts are better. Should we double down at Richmond or find new drivers to follow?

Place your NASCAR bets on DraftKings Sportsbook and bet online by downloading the DraftKings Sportsbook app.

No one has been better at Richmond than Truex, and no one has been better in the high horsepower, low downforce package. Truex had last weeks race at Darlington won, but he got nailed for speeding during the pivotal caution late in stage 3. Even with the penalty, Truex charged back for a fourth place finish.

Richmond is the only track that matters this week and thats good news for Truex because no one is in his area code when it comes to speed at Richmond. In the last five Richmond races, he has finished fifth, second, first, first and third. Truex should have won the first Richmond race this season, but he earned a pit road penalty during green flag pit stops in stage 3. A testament to the speed of his car was that he served a pass-through penalty and was still able to stay on the lead lap at the three-quarters of a mile short track. When it comes to bets to win, bettors will find no one better than Truex.

The picks to win this week did not change from last week. This might seem strange or like a losing strategy, but Larson and Truex are great at the high horsepower, low downforce race tracks. Larson has developed a little bit of reputation for not being good at short, flat tracks, but thats exaggerated and inconsistent analysis. He can race anywhere and the short, flat tracks are no different.

At the paperclip-shaped short, flat tracks, Larson finished seventh at New Hampshire and fifth at Martinsville earlier this season. At Nashville, Larson destroyed the field. Nashville is more of an intermediate track, the critics will say. Richmond has the same peculiarity. Its a short, flat track with intermediate track tendencies and before the inaugural Cup race at Nashville, most analysts pointed to Richmond as the most comparable track. But forget about comparisons, just look at the Richmond stats Larson won the 2017 fall night race.

The Hendrick cars have been unstoppable everywhere this season including Richmond Alex Bowman won the spring race. Larsons poor finish in the first Richmond race has created an opportunity for bettors. His odds to win are much worse than they should be. He has proven that he has the talent to win at Richmond, and the Hendrick cars are the best high horsepower cars in the Cup Series. His odds this weekend are an overreaction to a poor setup in the spring Richmond race. During the first pit stop, Larsons team spent a significant amount of time on pit road putting in a packer. It happens, but its not likely going to happen again. The Michael Jordan of NASCAR should not have these kind of odds.

Put your knowledge to the test. Sign up for DraftKings and experience the game inside the game.

The last short, flat track race was at New Hampshire. Bell won the Xfinity race that weekend and would have won the Cup event, but NASCAR called the race early due to darkness. In the Xfinity Series, Bell won three of his five races at Richmond and probably should have won four. In the spring Cup race, Bell finished fourth at Richmond. This package and this race track suit Bells driving style.

In converse, Byron is not perfectly suited for this package and hes not good at this track. To come home seventh at a track that Ive struggled at is good for us. This is not a race that we had circled to do well, so its good to finish top 10 again, Bryon said in an interview following the spring Richmond race. Bell is looking for a win and Byron is lucky to get a top 10.

This is pretty simple Almirola has been better in this package at the flat tracks than Kurt Busch. At New Hampshire, Almirola won convincingly and Busch finished 16th. In the high downforce, flat track race before that (Nashville), Almirola finished sixth and Busch finished eighth. Finally, at Richmond, Almirola finished sixth and Busch finished 13th.

Chip Ganassi Racing is building fast high downforce race cars as Chastain has shown but Kurt Busch is not producing results. Almirola has suffered through a lot of bad luck this season and it has taken Stewart-Haas Racing the whole season to figure things out, but theyre finally headed in the right direction and Almirolas bad luck seems to be a thing of the past.

The Proud Boys What Are They Proud Of? – Freedom Wire

Posted: at 5:52 am

The Proud Boys are a far-right, neo-fascist organization that openly admits to only allowing men as members and promoting political violence

This is what the average person would say after one Google search, reading a page off of Wikipedia without doing any additional research.

Which is why I wanted to give you a better look as to what this organization all about. Hopefully, this article will answer the question of WHAT the Proud Boys are not just WHO they are.

The Proud Boys embrace an ancient ritual that the Romans, the Spartans, the Samurai, Pirates, the Military, and even the Disciples of Jesus Christ have been practicing for hundreds of thousands of years called

Brotherhood.

What is brotherhood? Its important to understand WHAT brotherhood is all about if were going to understand what the Proud Boys are

Put simply, a brotherhood is an association, society, or community of people linked by a common interest, religion, or trade.

In the case of the Proud Boys, their common interests are built on a foundation of political ideology.

Their values are rooted in libertarianism but have been skewed to fit the mainstream medias agenda. They insist on labeling any organization that is pro-Trump or leans to the Right as a white supremacist or Neo-fascist organization which, in the Proud Boys case, COULDNT be farther from the truth.

The core of the Proud Boys ideology is as follows

The Proud Boys do not discriminate based upon race, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation/preference

In fact, one of the most prominent members and the current chairman of the Proud Boys is Enrique Tarrio, an American of Afro-Cuban descent.

The only rules to join are that you must be a born-male and accept that the West is the best.

Founder Gavin McInnes even explained that The Far-Left and Far-Right who hate usand want to kill us, by the waykeep taunting to come to the dark side, BUT ITS NOT WHO WE ARE!

While the organization has been labeled as Nazis over and over by misinformed and biased journalists, theyve NEVER been CLOSE to deserving that label

Even so, all the negative press caused McInnes to step down as President of the group after which they elected Tarrio.

Which blows the Lefts whole neo-Nazi theory right out of the water.

Think about it

How can an organization that has a minority leader be labeled as a white supremacist groupESPECIALLY given that ALL the Proud Boy leaders voted for him?

The only argument here is that the mainstream media continually pushes to label the Proud Boys as a Fascist group in order to preserve ANTIFAs reputation as the lapdog of the Left

And now, ANTIFA is an ACTUAL terrorist organization.

The Proud Boys are still THRIVING even after social media giants completely banned them from their platforms and having the talking heads of the Liberal media machine smearing them on a daily basis.

Hell, the Southern Poverty Law Center even labeled them as domestic terrorists even though the FBI has disagreed showing no evidence to support that claim whatsoever.

But still, the Boys are seen as a political gang from people around the United States, including big corporations and banks.

On Feb 10, 2019, Enrique Tarrio was kicked off Chases banking platform for his affiliation with Proud Boys

How can this happen? He didnt violate any guidelines or service agreements but nonetheless, was still removed for simply being an outspoken conservative voice.

I actually was the first person to interview Enrique on the subject after building a relationship with the chairman and proving to have the ability to give a fair interview.

I am not victimizing myself I am just sharing my story, Enrique stated Its not just card processing platforms and banks I have been de-platformed from. I have also been banned from AirBnB, Coin Base commerce and those are 2 services I have never used I just signed up for them. But its all connected through my Facebook account, which lets them know who I am. (you can see that interview HERE.)

Apparently, the guidelines that were broken that lead to the Chairmans abrupt and forced departure was the hate speech and hate group guidelines.

However, if the banks and corporations did just a LITTLE research, theyd have known that the only things that the Proud Boys hate are Communism, Socialism, and Political Correctness.

But maybe were missing something here?

Maybe if we got a closer look maybe if we could get a view from the inside we could see what theyre TRULY about and who they truly are.

What does it take to become a Proud Boy? Are there crazy initiation ceremonies? Is there hazing?

Are they getting jumped in and beaten until they are unconscious, then having to prove loyalty by murder or rape like Ms13?

Are they killing a Black or Hispanic prisoner like the Aryan Brotherhood?

Nope

Theyre not doing ANY of that. To become a Proud Boy, you simply need to say, I (state your name) am a Proud Western Chauvinist & I do not apologize for creating the modern world.

Oh and then yell UHURU! afterward (Uhuru means freedomin Swahili.)

As far as ranks go, there are only three levels

Rank 1: Repeat the chant by a Proud Boy chapter leader

Rank 2: You must get punched by five dudes above the belt and below the face until you can name five breakfast cereals

Rank 3: You must get a Proud Boy tattoo and quit masturbation.

But

Im going to let you in on something very few people know: theres a SECRET 4th level that they dont like to talk about publically

Rank 4: Defending yourself against Leftist domestic terrorists.

Thats IT!

THIS IS THE TERROR YOUVE BEEN WARNED ABOUT?!

A group that has been attacked and smeared more times than they have ever attacked anyone else

A group that is hated and seen as a nuisance by heavily-biased, Leftist-controlled media who even now are doing their best to smear two Proud Boys who have been convicted of assault on an ANTIFA member even AFTER it was revealed that their fighting was an act of self-defense! (Video evidence of WHO started the brawl HERE.)

Theyre facing a maximum of 20 years, while ANTIFA gets away scot-free.

Apparently, the biased media also infects the judicial system.

PATRIOTS go to jail and the aggressors are the VICTIMS.

Regardless, I hope this gives you a better idea of WHAT the Proud Boys are

Theyre us. Theyre patriots who have a deep love for their country and way of life. Id like to think theres a little Proud Boy living in ALL of us he just needs to be woken up.

The Proud Boys Say They Aren’t Coming. DC Is Bracing for Violence Anyway. Mother Jones – Mother Jones

High-profile extremist groups are sending mixed signals about whether their members will actually show up to a DC rally this month intended to demand justice for people who have been charged with taking part in the January 6 attack on the US Capitolbut officials in Washington say that arent taking any chances.

A group led by Matt Braynard, a former Trump campaign employee, is seeking a permit for up to 500 people to demonstrate in front of the Capitol on September 18 for a so-called #JusticeForJ6 protest. The planned rally is part of a persistent effort by Trump backers to downplay the events of January 6. Braynard has said the upcoming demonstration will push back on the the phony narrative that there was an insurrection and has claimed the crowd that day was largely peaceful. Though a large majority of the more than 600 people charged with taking part in the attack face minor charges and were released on bail, some conservative commentators have falsely asserted that most of the defendants remain in jail. Many on the right, including Braynard, have also embraced Donald Trumps false claims that he was cheated out of an election victory, the same lie that incited the insurrection.

Law enforcement officials, caught off guard in January, are bracing for the prospect of violence. DC police have said they will be fully prepared. The US Capitol Police are reportedly considering reinstalling a fence around the Capitol complex. An intelligence assessment by the force, Roll Call reported Tuesday, states that although outwardly Matt Braynard has instructed attendees to remain peaceful, given the propensity for this group to attract domestic extremists, their support for the insurrectionists, and their continued challenges to democratic institutions, it is not unreasonable to plan for violent altercations with those associated with this demonstration.

The Associated Press, citing federal intelligence findings, reported last week that far-right groups including the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers are planning to attend the rally. That has heightened concerns in Washington, since members of both groups are being prosecuted for allegedly taking part in the January 6 attack and conspiring beforehand to interfere with the certification of President Joe Bidens victory.

Publicly, however, members of those groups andother right-wing influencers deny any plans to mass in DC, and theyretrying to dissuade their followers from showing up. I do not know of any specific plan to attend, other than what we are watching the media fabricate, Kellye SoRelle, a lawyer for the Oath Keepers and confidante of the groups founder, Stewart Rhodes, told Mother Jones.

Through a Telegram account, the Proud Boys also disputed the idea that group members planned to attend en mass and suggested the rally was a law enforcement trap. We arent going and you shouldnt either because [everybody is]going to jail. Sounds like bait, the group warned.

If you rally in DC right now, youre an idiot and youre going to get people thrown in jail or worse, another message said. Proud Boy leader Henry Enrique Tarrio, as he arrived in DC on Monday to begin serving a five-month sentence for property destruction and weapons charges, said that he hasnt seen a single Proud Boy say theyre actually gonna go.

Some of the Proud Boys Telegram groups tried to get ahead of any potential violence by sharing a message that read, Whatever this rally is in DC, it definitely isnt going to be a Proud Boy rally. No doubt there will be some boomers in black and yellow gear calling themselves Proud Boys though.

Ron Watkins, the co-founder of 8chan, the key imageboard in facilitating the QAnon conspiracy movement, issued a similar message on his Telegram own channel, calling the event a likely false flag and saying that he hopes none of his followers attend. A prominent QAnon Telegram channel with more than 100,000 followers and other pro-Trump and pro-QAnon channels with large followings reposted Watkins message.

Others on the online right are spreading similar messages off Telegram. Gateway Pundit blogger Jim Hoft speculated that the event could be FBI manufactured. The far-right social media site Gab urged its usersnot to attend. Do not take the bait, the platform posted on its Twitter account. They are losing the narrative on January 6th so this is why the CIA mockingbird media is pushing this. No one serious or smart is going.

The remnants of The_Donald subreddit, which has moved between homes since being banned from Reddit, was a large hub for planning in advance of the original January 6 riot. But a recent search of the communityyielded few results for theSeptember 18 rally. Most of those that do show upcall it a false flag and encourage others not to attend.

According to Jared Holt, a research fellow at the Atlantic Councils Digital Forensic Research Lab who tracks far-right extremism online, these developments dontbode well for the events organizers. Ive seen maybe a couple of threads on [right-wing forums] or comments here or there. But at the moment, theres not much to support the idea that this will get enough momentum to even scratch the surface of what happened on January 6, Holt said.

Despite the warnings from far-right influencers, some are still coming. According to the Washington Post, Braynards Look Ahead America predicts that 700 people will attend, which is up from the groups initial estimate of 500 in its permit request.

The Harrington Hotel, a Proud Boys favorite, is completely sold out of rooms for the weekend of September 18 and 19, according to its bookings website. A hotel employee confirmed this over the phone.

Contrary to Tarrios claims, another Proud Boy, speaking at an event in Portland in August, urged group members and supporters to attend the DC rally.

Its unclear how much control these groups leaders have over their members. The Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers have always been loosely organized, and they have splintered further amid January 6 prosecutions. Some Oath Keepers have pleaded guilty and are cooperating with the federal investigation into the attack. A revelation that Tarrio is a longtime law enforcement informantwhich Tarrio has deniedhas also reportedly divided the Proud Boys.

Anti-Mask Protests and Proud Boys Shut Down Three Schools in Vancouver – Daily Beast

Posted: at 5:52 am

Three schools in Vancouver, Washington went into lockdown Friday after a group of anti-mask protesters that included the Proud Boys attempted to gain entry and disrupt the school day.

Skyview High School, Alki Middle School, and Chinook Elementary were on high alert after local members of the Proud Boys extremist gang, frustrated parents of students, and other anti-maskers rallied against the requirement that students, staff, and teachers wear face coverings.

The incident is just the latest example of the Proud Boys teaming up with anti-maskers to threaten school boards, from Florida to New Hampshire, over COVID mandates.

On Friday, the Proud Boys attempted to escort a freshman student seeking a medical exemption from the mask mandate into the Vancouver school, according to witnesses cited by Oregon Public Broadcasting. The attempted incursion prompted the call for lockdown.

The freshmans mom, Megan Gabriel, had claimed that the mask could trigger panic attacks in her daughter. The school had declined the request.

Patriot Prayer, a local far-right group, rallied supporters by saying that students would be arrested if they refused to comply with the mask mandate, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. The claim was untrue.

Carrying signs that read Masking kids=abuse and Medical choice: Your body, your choice, demonstrators rallied in front of the schools and on the sidewalks near buses. Some protesters shouted slurs at female students, security guards told OPB.

Chris Erdman, a career specialist at Skyview High School, told The Daily Beast Friday that the lockdown lasted roughly half an hour but otherwise didnt interrupt school business.

He said of the protest, Its a thing thats happening outside, but students seem to be calm. Its mostly like Let them do their thing. School is continuing.

A 16-year-old student named Lucas told OPB, All the learning gets disrupted. We have to sit down quietly, not make noise, and we were hunkered down in our classrooms for around an hour to an hour-and-a-half. He said he later handed out masks to the protesters.

Kyle Sproul, school board president of Vancouver Public Schools, told OPB, Regardless of ones stance on mask mandates, I think most parents in our community agree that protesting at our school campuses and disrupting the school day is not in the best interest of students.

The Clark County sheriffs office, whose jurisdiction includes Skyview, did not immediately respond to request for comment.

There have been a rash of disturbing COVID-related dust-ups at schools around the country. On Thursday, a father stormed into an elementary school principals office in Arizona with a friend wielding plastic handcuffs, insisting the school broke the law by asking his child and six others to wear a mask and quarantine after being in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

The Proud Boys came to Portland. Here is what I saw. – Religion News Service

Posted: at 5:52 am

(RNS) Portland, much like the rest of the nation, has been dealt innumerable difficulties in recent years. The reality of climate change has brought extraordinary temperatures and wildfires. Weve been challenged by the Black Lives Matter movement to address longstanding racial justice issues. COVID-19 has battered the entire state.

To top it off, the Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer, two far-right political groups, keep descending on the City of Roses with the clear intent of inciting violence.

The Proud Boys have been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. NPR reported in 2018 that the FBI had declared them an extremist group with ties to white nationalism. In May, Canada designated the Proud Boys a terrorist entity, and it has been widely reported that Proud Boys were prominent leaders in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Last month, when the Proud Boys assembled in Northeast Portlands Parkrose community, I was there. Here is what I saw.

The original plan for Aug. 22, according to news reports, was for the Proud Boys to rally in downtown Portland. However, after counter-demonstrations materialized, the Proud Boys apparently decided to relocate to an abandoned Kmart parking lot near the Portland airport. I parked on the edge of that parking lot to listen in on what the Proud Boys called their Summer of Love event.

Armed with paintball guns, bats and other weapons, speaker after speaker assailed the Black Lives Matter movement. Echoing language used by Vladimir Putin, a banner was unfurled atop the abandoned Kmart demanding the release of political prisoners arrested for participating in the Jan. 6 attack. Proud Boys leader Tusitala Tiny Toese, who has been convicted for employing violence at protests, called for violence against the LGBTQ community. Others railed against vaccinated people and mask-wearing to curtail the pandemic.

As a minister in the United Church of Christ, I was particularly interested in how the Proud Boys used their rally to promote Christian nationalism. Jesus was not meek, a speaker told the crowd, trying to draw a parallel between Jesus and the tough-guy Proud Boys. Trust Jesus was an oft-repeated phrase at the rally (and also emblazoned on sweatshirts).

They claimed that white men, not people of color, religious minorities or women, are the real victims of discrimination and hatred. Missing was any mention of loving God or neighbors, the Greatest Commandment.

As I observed the proceedings, I shared thoseobservations on Twitter. Once the Proud Boys realized I was in the area, they crossed the parking lot to my Jeep, which they surrounded and pounded on several times, all while demanding that I leave. I was called a fag and told that real Christians are Proud Boys.

Finally, with the attention of the Proud Boys momentarily turned to counter-protesters across the street, I left. While I had not come to fight, it was clear the Proud Boys were there for just that reason.

Unfortunately, Antifa activists, the loose-knit anti-fascist group, decided to join the fray. If the Proud Boys had come looking for a fight, Antifa, as usual, came prepared to give them one. As Antifa entered the Kmart parking lot, the Proud Boys began a relentless assault. As Oregon Public Broadcasting reported: The Proud Boys rally ended with a roving brawl along busy city streets in the Parkrose neighborhood, and shots being fired in downtown Portland.

Astonishingly, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler ordered Portland Police not to intervene. After the fights broke out, OPB wrote, Toese and other Proud Boys continued to drive around the Parkrose neighborhood shooting paintballs at people. Parkrose is one of Portlands most diverse communities.

The Proud Boys are a threat to democracy. Antifa, whose activists assaulted a journalist trying to cover events on Aug. 22, is not the antidote to the Proud Boys. I find it disheartening that a small group of clergy, under the umbrella of Portland Interfaith Clergy Resistance, provides moral cover for Antifa and anarchists, seemingly regardless of what they might do.

Anti-democratic forces feed off chaos. Turning up over and over to fight the Proud Boys has given these far-right thugs precisely what they want.

I wish I had a Tweet-sized answer to political violence in the United States. I dont. At the very least, the federal government needs to combat the growing threat of right-wing domestic terrorism. If Portlands mayor refuses to defend democracy, President Joe Biden must.

Churches must also condemn the white nationalism advanced by the Proud Boys and their allies and become intentional about anti-racism work. For democracy to work, all of us must become active citizens and work toward the ideal of the Beloved Community.

Otherwise, Portland and the rest of the United States will resemble the hate-filled vision offered up by the Proud Boys. Unfortunately, we are too close to that ugly vision already.
