Tar balls on beaches, Goa to write to Centre on marine pollution – Sify
Posted: September 16, 2021 at 5:47 am
Panaji, Sep 15 (IANS) The Goa government will write to the union ministries including the Home Affairs, Environment and Shipping, urging them to act against those responsible for spilling oil in the high seas, which has resulted in oily tar balls being washed ashore along the western coast of India, including Goa.
"Action should be taken against those who create pollution in the high seas. It is a west coast problem, which impacts the entire stretch," Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday.
Sawant's comments come days after tar balls -- greasy blobs of thick weathered oil -- layered several beaches in Goa, resulting in dark, ugly streaks on the beach sand.
Sawant said that he was going to write about the issue to the Union Home Ministry, Union Environment Ministry and the Shipping Ministry.
Sawant also said that the beaches which have been polluted with the tar balls will be cleared in time.
"The beaches will be cleaned regularly," Sawant said.
The emergence of tar balls on Goa's beaches is a seasonal phenomenon, which occurs during the monsoon season. According to marine scientists the semi-solid tar bars are created when oil discharged in the sea mixes with the salty water and undergoes a weathering process, which leads to formation of tar balls. The Goa government has previously claimed that the tar ball phenomenon originates due to oil spillage at Bombay High, an offshore oil drilling platform off the coast of Maharashtra.
Tourism industry stakeholders in the state have repeatedly urged the Goa government to take up the matter with the central authorities in order to ensure permanent solution to the menace to beaches, which are a top draw as far as the tourism industry in the state is concerned.

50 years after Greenpeace began, the climate crisis is now our biggest threat and we cant fight it alone – The Independent
Posted: at 5:47 am
The first time humanity noticed that wed become an existential threat to ourselves, nuclear war was the potential armageddon casting its shadow over the world. It was the reason Greenpeace came into existence 50 years ago today. The self-imposed risk of annihilation was justified by the Mad doctrine the claim that, because nuclear weapons were so terrible, no one would ever use them for fear of mutually assured destruction. Todays superpowers are still negotiating treaties to try to dodge that fate.
Unlike bombs and missiles, climate changes weapons of mass destruction are genuinely invisible, and so easy and cheap to manufacture that everyones doing it. Most worryingly, theyre already airborne. Weve been launching them in greater and greater volumes for several centuries, and weve finally arrived at the moment when the first wave hits.
All of these factors make the climate talks taking place in Glasgow in November fraught and complex, and absolutely urgent. Just hoping that everyone will be sensible enough not to destroy the only known habitable planet doesnt seem to be working this time.
In 2019, Chinas annual emissions exceeded those of all developed countries combined, as their coal addiction proves hard to shake. Meanwhile, the USAs puny renewables industry is only a third as big as Chinas, and their per capita emissions are still twice as big. So everyone has a good reason to call everyone else a hypocrite, ignore the threat and destroy themselves. Yes, Mad.
The glacial pace of the international talks can be incredibly frustrating, but glacial pace is a lot faster than it used to be, and is accelerating all the time. Our leaders will move as quickly as we push them, and more and more people are putting their shoulders to the wheel. Politicians are all talking the talk, weve got more targets than a rifle ranges performance management review, now we need to force concrete action. Is it realistic to think that ordinary people can make politicians change entire industries in a just transition? Yes, it is. Weve tested it.
Greenpeace led the campaign to drive coal out of the UK. It provided more than 30 per cent of our energy supply when we started, less than 3 per cent now, and our last coal plant is scheduled to close in 2024. We were business partners in Britains first offshore wind farm, the best clean energy technology for a windy island, and it's now providing tens of thousands of jobs. Last year we helped push the government into a 2030 phase-out for petrol and diesel cars, and were still exposing and blocking the worst ideas from the oil and gas industry.
If theres one thing we need to stop burning even faster than fossil fuels, its forests. Humans and our livestock now account for more than 95 per cent of the mammals on our planet. Millions of cows and acres of cattle feed have replaced large chunks of the Amazon and the wildlife that lived there, while oil palms are wreaking the same destruction in Indonesia.
Greenpeace has been at the forefront of tackling the drivers of deforestation, especially for globally traded agricultural commodities like palm oil and soya beans. The soy moratorium we painstakingly constructed cut deforestation in Brazil by a huge amount from 2006 until the arrival of President Jair Bolsonaro, the Trump of the tropics. And our work on forests is where we learned about the importance of the Indigenous peoples who own, occupy, or use a quarter of the worlds surface area and safeguard 80 per cent of Earths remaining biodiversity. The Bolsonaro government is driving them from their forest homes, and without their protection, we lose the forests, then the climate, and then risk our own homes.
Some 50 years after our first voyage, Greenpeace is still an amphibious organisation. After successful campaigns against nuclear weapons testing, whaling, and the dumping of radioactive and toxic waste at sea, our oceans team are currently campaigning to protect the high seas from being emptied by industrial fishing, and from the creeping contamination of waste plastic.
But we need many more people to get involved in order to get a lot more done, and do it faster. If we want to have any chance of keeping global heating aligned with the Paris Agreement on climate, then we need to cut emissions by half this decade. And if we want to prevent the loss of more than a million species, we must halt biodiversity loss now, not in 2050.
A tall order. As economist John Maynard Keynes said: The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as escaping from old ones. Escaping old ideas is difficult. But many of yesterdays eternal truths must be discarded if we are to avoid a frightening tomorrow. And the threat which sank the Glasgow talks last year Covid may be the thing that saves them this year.
The pandemics silver lining, the elusive positive impact that everyone has been searching for, was not the fleeting glimpse of clean air and birdsong some of us enjoyed, unsupported by any structural change. That was just a postcard from a vanishing past. The lasting positive impact of the pandemic will, perhaps, be a reset of the role of the state.
Last year UK government expenditure amounted to more than 50 per cent of gross domestic product, a disaster by orthodox economic thinking. But everyone understood that in such an emergency we needed rapid, government-led action that would have achieved even more with greater international cooperation. Its an interesting idea. Lets hope it takes hold in time for the Glasgow talks. The future is rapidly slipping into the present.
John Sauven is executive director of Greenpeace, a post he has held since 2008.

Here’s why US oil supplies took such big hit from Ida – Midland Reporter-Telegram
Posted: at 5:47 am
(Bloomberg) -- Hurricane Ida unleashed such furious winds and waves that almost two weeks later oil drillers, power suppliers and refiners are still picking up the pieces. They wont be done any time soon.
The damage to offshore platforms, pipelines and even heli-pads was so severe that two out of every three barrels of crude normally pumped from the U.S. sector of the Gulf of Mexico are unavailable. The ripple effects are still playing out as refiners and brokers scour the globe for replacements and the Gulfs biggest oil producer, Royal Dutch Shell Plc, tells some customers it cant honor supply commitments.
It will be weeks -- maybe longer -- before normal conditions can be restored off the Louisiana coast and in the warren of oil-processing and chemical plants that occupies a 100-mile (160-kilometer) corridor from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. Recovery efforts may be hindered by Tropical Storm Nicholas, which gained power Monday as it headed toward the coast of Texas, likely bringing flooding rains to Houston and Louisiana.
Whats different is this is lasting longer, Bert Winders, 63, a Baker Hughes Co. health and safety director, said in reference to how Idas disruption compared with previous hurricanes. Its just demanding on people. Three to five days, they can deal with. But when you start talking two, three, even four weeks, thats really tough on a family.
The recovery efforts are being closely watched around the world in large part because of the unprecedented scale and duration of the oil outages. Within days of the hurricane, traders were seizing on arbitrage opportunities created by the disappearance of some U.S. Gulf grades of oil such as Mars blend. For example, crude from Russias Ural Mountains is a popular alternative to Mars because they share similar characteristics.
Idas drawn-out aftermath offers a chastening glimpse of what may be in store as climate change fuels ever-more furious storms along low-lying coastal regions dotted with heavy industry and vital fuel-making facilities.
Typically, when tropical storms and hurricanes menace the oil-producing region of the Gulf, drillers batten down hatches, shut off the subsea wells funneling oil up to platforms and evacuate crews. When the skies clear, they often can chopper inspection teams back out in a matter of hours or days and resume production shortly thereafter.
When Louisiana was battered by Hurricane Laura last year, offshore crude output bounced back quickly.
Direct Hit
After Ida, that wasnt remotely possible. The monster storms direct hit on Port Fourchon a few hours before sundown on Aug. 29 completely disabled the primary jumping-off point for helicopters and vessels that service hundreds of offshore platforms and rigs.
Even the lone road connecting Port Fourchon to the rest of the state -- Louisiana Highway 1 -- was knocked out of commission by Idas massive wall of sea water and the tons of sand it swept ahead.
When Port of Fourchon is out of service, it breaks a link in the chain, said Winders, a Louisiana native whos been working in the oil industry for four decades.
Into Darkness
At the height of the disaster, more than a million homes and businesses were cast into darkness as Idas 150 mile-per-hour (240 kph) winds destroyed most of the transmission infrastructure in southeast Louisiana.
But by late Friday, there were still almost 200,000 without power or air conditioning -- a telling illustration of the extent of the destruction. As for Port Fourchon, the area isnt expected to get full electricity restored until the end of this month, according to utility company Entergy Corp.
Out on the high seas, drilling has returned to just 29% of pre-Ida levels. There were four rigs operating in the U.S. sector of the Gulf as of Friday, well below the 14 plying the waters before the storm, according to data from Baker Hughes, which has been tracking drilling activity since 1944.
Hobbled Refineries
Shell is gearing up to reopen many of the Gulf pipelines that carry crude to shore in the next week, according to a person familiar with the operations, a key step to potentially restoring offshore crude output. Still, a crucial conduit for Mars oil and other grades will remain shut as damage assessments continue, the person said. The company declined to comment.
Further inland, the crippling effects of the cyclone are still being assessed. A New Orleans-area refinery owned by Phillips 66 suffered so much damage and flooding that the company may not even restart it, depending on how expensive itll cost to repair.
Shells Norco refining and chemical complex north of New Orleans may remain shut for several more weeks because of extensive damage.
Meanwhile, Marathon Petroleum Corp. managed to resume fuel production at its massive Garyville facility on Friday, although five other Louisiana refineries with combined daily capacity to process one million barrels remain shut.

Signal No. 2 up over Itbayat, Batanes as Kiko brings heavy to intense rains – GMA News Online
Posted: at 5:47 am
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 remained hoisted over Itbayat in the northern part of Batanes on Sunday morning as Typhoon Kiko (international name: Chanthu) brings heavy to intense and at times torrential rains over the province, PAGASA said in its early morning bulletin.
This area have damaging gale-force to storm-force winds prevailing or expected within 24 hours. Damage to structures and vegetation will be light to moderate.
TCWS No. 1 meanwhile was raised overthe northern portion of Babuyan Islands (Babuyan Island, Calayan Island, Panuitan Island) and the rest of Batanes. Strong winds are prevailing or are expected within 36 hours in these areas, which may cause very light damage to structures and vegetation.
All other TCWS previously raised over other areas were lifted.
Rainfall
Heavy to intense rainfall, at times torrential, will pour over Batanes in the next 24 hours.
The Babuyan Islands meanwhile will likely have moderate to heavy with at times intense rains.
PAGASA said flooding may occur (scattered to widespread, including flash floods), as well as rain-induced landslides especially in areas prone to these hazards.
Kiko will continue enhancing the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).
Monsoon rains will thus be experienced inIlocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the western section of Central Luzon in the next 24 hours.
The Southwest Monsoon will also bring over the next 24 hours occasional gusts, strong breezes and near gale-strength windsover the coastal and upland or mountain areas of Northern Luzon that are not under TCWS, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa.
Low-lying coastal localities of Batanes may have flooding due to high waves reaching the coast.
Coastal waters
The seaboards of Batanes and Babuyan Islands will have rough to high seas (up to 6 meters) in the next 24 hours.
"Sea travel is risky for all types of sea vessels over these waters. Mariners are advised to remain in port or take shelter in port until winds and waves subside," PAGASA said.
A gale warning was raised overthe northern and western seaboards of Luzon that are not under any TCWS and the eastern seaboard of Cagayan, due to Kiko's enhancing of the Southwest Monsoon.
Location, track
At 4 a.m., Kiko's eye was located at245 km north of Itbayat, Batanes or over the sea east of central Taiwan.
The typhoon hasmaximum sustained winds of 175 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 215 km/h, and central pressure of 940 hPa.
Kiko slightly weakened and was moving northward at 15 km/h.
From its eye, strong winds or higher than that category extend outward up to 480 km.
Kiko is expected to head generally northward over the sea east of Taiwan and the East China Sea.
The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday afternoon or evening.
Kiko is also seen to continue to weaken but will remain a typhoon.
PAGASA advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned to take the necessary precautions.
The next weather bulletin will be issued at 11 a.m.KG, GMA News

Retired U.S. Special Agent Henry Hunter on His Career at the State Department – Sarasota
Posted: September 14, 2021 at 4:46 pm
Retired U.S. Special Agent and Division Chief for Protective Intelligence Investigation Charles Shepherd Henry Hunter IIIwho goes by Henryhas led a life that could rival any government-based action thriller.
Hunter launched his career in 1968 with the Atlanta Police Department, where he worked major crimes, surveilled drug dealers and conducted undercover sting operations. In 1980, while undercover and passing off packages of oatmeal as drugs, he ducked into a phone booth in a rainstorm to return a call from a U.S. Department of State recruiter, who offered him a job as a special agent and diplomatic security. He went on to become one of only a few Black agents in the field for the majority of his career. He was also the first Black person to lead a Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) investigative office.
At the State Department, Hunter investigated and solved federal crimes, which included kidnappings, murders, robberies, terrorism, counter-terrorism, and bombings, which included the one at the Asociacin Mutual Israelita Argentina building in Buenos Aires in 1994, for which he was lead investigator. It was the deadliest attack on the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Hunter also assessed and monitored the internal security of the U.S. and its citizens by conducting vulnerability and security assessments. He taught protective intelligence in other countries from Palestine to Mexico and often coordinated events with the CIA, U.S. Secret Service and Department of Defense. On two occasions he was assigned to the FBI for investigations and has been honored with several awards for his service. And while serving in the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), Hunter managed the Protective Intelligence Operations, supporting the United Nations General Assembly for more than 20 years. This involved employing plain clothes operatives and coordinating all agencies providing protection for visiting foreign dignitaries. He was often asked for by name; some of the notable leaders he protected include Prince Charles, Salman Rushdie, Edn Pastora Gmez (a.k.a. "Commander Zero" of Honduras) and Haiti's former president Jean-BertrandAristide. He also served as DSS Capitol Hill representative during visits from Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Madeleine Albright, George Schultz, Lawrence Eagleburger, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell and Margaret Thatcher, who called Hunter into her suite to personally thank him for his service and ask for a photograph with him.
Now 71, Hunter is retired and writing his autobiographyworking title: Not James Bond. Along with his wife of 41 years, Teresa Bennett Hunter, he keeps Florida ties to both Apollo Beach and Sarasotathe latter to stay close to his cherished sister, the award-winning journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault.
I was born at home in a wooden house on Brown Street in Covington, Georgia. At the age of 2, my family moved to Atlanta. I was molded and formed by my mother, Althea Ruth Hunter, and my sister Charlayne Hunter-Gault. Within minutes of my birth, I was swaddled and handed to my sister. She was told, This is now your responsibility'and she has lived up to the challenge to this day.
My grandfather, Charles Shepherd Henry Hunter Sr., was the barber in town and appeared Caucasian. His skin color allowed him to move about Covington as a white Southern gentleman. He was a part of society and looked up to by all, so he could get a lot of things done, such as speak for those who dare not speak for themselves. Being the barber in a small Southern town, rich in the Jim Crow tradition, made him a very influential man. For instance, he worked at the barbershop by day, then at night, he went to the local jail to do haircuts for the incarcerated as well as the jailers.
Although I wasn't born with a silver spoon, I was born to the best parents that could be afforded a young Black boy in the South. My mother was extremely intelligent, tough, and earned her high school education in Chicago. My father, Rev. Charles Shepherd Henry Hunter Jr., was a prominent, big-in-stature Black preacher who enlisted in the Army during WWII where he was a chaplain, including at Fort Sam in Houston, one of the largest Army bases in the U.S. After my father retired as a colonel, he returned to his native Florida.
Both my father and grandfather were African Methodist Episcopal (AME) ministers in Florida, including Tampa and the surrounding areas. My father also pastored churches in Clearwater, Sulphur Springs, and Jacksonville. My grandfather became the presiding elder for all AME churches in Palmetto, Bradenton and Sarasota. My family roots run deep here. The Florida AME elder is a powerful and influential person, not just with the congregation but throughout their communities. During the 1967 Black riots in Tampa, the first call that the mayor made was to my father. He immediately took to the streets with other influencers, and lowered the temperature of the rioters.
When I would visit my father as a child, he would take me on his rounds. He would visit the sick and shut-ins and people on the other side of his ministry, who he was anxious to help. Some of those stops were at gambling dens, illegal nightclubs and prostitutes' homes. My fathers boisterous manner was what kept him doing what he was doing, because he was going to be heard. I can still recall the anticipation for the hymn to start on Sunday mornings and his voice bellowing from the pulpit. It was an octave that would shake the devil.
The most startling was also the first, which happened in Covington. We were visiting one of our affluent Black friends when I noticed the adults whispering. They quickly shuffled the kids inside the house, locked the doors and pulled the shades down.
Being amateur detectives, my brother and I slipped out the back of the house and hid in the crawl space. We saw why the adults were so shaken: several pick-up trucks with men dressed in white hooded outfits, shotguns in hand, were patrolling the streets. Its whats referred to as 'Klan riding.' The KKK was establishing domination and looking for a Black person doing anything it considered wrong. I was terrified to see those hooded outfits."
My first term paper in college was on the origin of the Ku Klux Klan. I wanted to know where it came from and how they could hate someone because of the color of their skin. After my research, I found out that its origin was actually about fair treatment of all. For instance, if they found out a white man beat his wife or child, they would beat the hell out of him. It was almost an extension of the church; it had religion behind it. It started with the best intentionsits discipline was based on people doing the right thingbut it didnt stay that way long.
In my career, I also monitored white hate groups and domestic terrorists. The ill-intentioned find a group with an emotional attachmentlike the gun lobbyand slowly move it in the direction of white hate. They start by innocently passing out pamphlets or otherwise, saying that they are not extreme in their beliefs, convincing you that they believe in the same thing you do and asking you to join them. One method of recruitment is fear. They convince others that the government will come in black helicopters to take your guns, or take your livelihood away, or that someone lesser than will marry your daughters and take them away. All these things are implemented through racism or sexism or anti-Semitism. Its always been here, and when our leaders dont denounce the behavior, such as racism, its the same as welcoming and condoning it.
My mother tried to shelter us from racism, so the whole UGA discussion came as a shock to the family. I was 11 years old and didnt understand it, and no one talked to me about it. All I knew was that one of the two most important women in my life was about to embark on a dangerous journey.
One night, my mother came to me and said, Im taking you out of school for a while, Ive already spoken with your teachers, they will get your homework to you. I think its important that you go with your sister. She wanted me to witness how Char handled herselffrom on-campus meetings to the trials and events surrounding her attempt to be accepted as a student at UGA. My mother knew I would benefit from that experience, especially since my sister and I had a special bond, which still goes on today.
My mother was really something. Everything she did had a purpose. Her self-description was, Im a little piece of leather, well put together.
A student riot broke out over her admission. When that passed, and she was attending classes regularly, the decision was made that she needed a car to travel from the university in Athens to our home in Atlanta. I would accompany her on that drive Fridays and Mondays, and it would be kept with Black friends who owned an off-campus restaurant called Killians. Several legal trial-related meetings were held in that restaurant. The legal team consisted of Donald Hollowell, Constance Motley, Horace Ward and the unforgettable Vernon Jordan.
When I met Vernon, I immediately wanted to be him. To say he was young, gifted, and Black was not to tell the whole truth. Not only was he a thinker, he was a doer. Everything that came out of that legal team that I saw was transmitted, transported and transcribed by Vernon. He was what every young Black guy wanted to be: intelligent, educated and to have people listen to you. Throughout my career, I met with Vernon on several occasions and benefited from his experience and sage advice. He was one advisor whose advice I followed to the letter.
Someone from Chars legal team needed to be present when she returned to school on Monday mornings in case any events occurred. Vernon was usually the one. Every Monday we would drop her at the journalism building, which had a long set of marble steps up to its plateau. When Char reached the top, she would always look back and wave. Recalling it today, I get misty-eyed. Every week, I thought that it would be the last time I would ever see her because I knew friends were few and far between once she got out of sight. That was traumatic for me. Char never complained, she was always positive. My mother was extremely worried all the time, but she never complained, either.
The public may be surprised to know that the pretty girl they know as Charlayne was introverted and didnt say much before all this happened. But because the circumstances called for it, she became a different person. She had to not only talk the talk, but she also had to walk the walk.
If my mother was not involved, her daughter would have faced the unknown without her. The discussion for Char to apply to UGA was done outside of her hearing, but required her approval. There was an organization of helpful people behind my sisters journey to UGA, and also while she was there, but I never saw them. My mother was the intermediary for whatever system existed.
There was no greater feeling than being around my mother and my sister. On several occasions, being a mamas boy, I would walk to my mothers work to ride home with her. She was the bookkeeper and administrator for a Black-owned company called Wilson Realty in Atlanta.
Many times, our drive home would take several detours. On occasion, we would stop at one of the Jewish-owned grocery stores in Black neighborhoods. Sometimes, I would see envelopes handed to my mother along with packages of groceries and she would leave without paying. The most memorable detour was to a grocery store at Ashby and Simpson Streets. When we went in, the proprietor called to someone in the butcher area. He spoke in Yiddish and pointed for my mother to go back there. A woman came out, dressed in white, covered in blood, with a brown case in her hand. She gave the case to my mother and kissed her on the cheek.
When we got back to the car, my mother was in tears. On the ride home, my mother explained that the woman and her husband said, Every journalist needs a good typewriter and the best one is a Smith Corona. In the case was a Smith Corona, which was given to my sister. Inside the case was an envelope. I never knew what it contained and can only guess that it was money to help with college expenses.
I dated women from all backgrounds and races until the day a friend told me about a girl that I would love and probably marry, which turned out to be true. Teresa was the girl of my dreams, my soulmate, my greatest supporter, unyielding critic, mother of my son, Chase, and the person who would help to steer my course from that time on.
There was just one problem: she was Caucasian. While we dated, we were always the subject of stares, derogatory whispers and sometimes flat-out hatred. When they say love conquers all, we know what that means.
One example was when I was a DSS agent/criminal investigator assigned to the Protective Liaison Division. I was alerted by a colleague that two of my superiorsthe chief and deputy chiefhad made racist comments about my marriage to a white woman, which included a conversation about what color our son turned out to be.
While I was a patrolman in Atlanta, I was assigned a beat in a high-crime area. One day at roll call, I was paired with a female wagon driver who not only transported prisoners but was also backup. I never thought about her competence and ability to help me with the more difficult arrest scenarios; however, I was teased by macho, sometimes badge-heavy, officers that I was paired with my mother and who referred to her as matronly.
One night, I made a stop with a vehicle that had been the subject of an armed robbery lookout. As [my backup] arrived, the two occupants ran in different directions. I went for the closest one and a scuffle ensued, but I was able to place the subject in handcuffs. When I brought him to his feet, I saw [my backup] walking in my direction, suspect in tow and in handcuffs. I was proud of her and glad I trusted her. As for the rest of the officers, she had, in one moment, proven herself competent. The teasing stopped that dayand for the rest of my time with her.
That affection and respect for women continued throughout my career. Providing protection for Jean Kirkpatrick, and protective support for Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice, gave me many opportunities to support intelligent, strong women who were tough as nails and, at the same time, compassionate. Having also provided levels of security for several secretaries of state that also included George Shultz, James Baker, Lawrence Eagleburger and Al Haig, Rice and Albright are the at the top of my list.
In monitoring hate groups, I realized we needed to do more to keep our eye on them, especially ahead of an event with a dignitary, so the protective detail would be aware of what they might face.
Lets take Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, for example. One of the anti-Semitic groups learned that she is Jewish, and it didnt take lights and sirens to go off to understand that they were organizing. But it was more than anti-Semitism; the truth is that there is a group of people who dont like a women in a position of power. This got serious when Albright was attending a town hall at Ohio State University in 1998 with the Clinton Administrations defense secretary, William Cohen, and national security adviser Sandy Berger.
Four days before the town hall, I took a team of agents to develop intelligence to support diplomatic protective operationsmeaning the guys you see in the suits and Ray-Bans who talk into their wrists. It was a different world then, one where we could walk into the universitys student center and blend with just a soda, lunch or milkshake. We would just sit and listen to what [the groups] were planning. The night before Albrights arrival, I briefed the detail leader and told him that, frankly, I didnt think there was a threat to her life, but if she got to speak a full sentence, Id be surprised. We had identified some students who might have approached her, so I set up my agents in areas that would prevent any altercations.
Open threats on diplomatic women happened more often than those on men. I held briefings with Condoleezza Rice's staff to define the threat that comes with the n-word. My office had to vet or investigate every threat. And we did this not only for American officials but foreign as well. It happened quite a lot with the Royal Family and British officials.
I spent two nights in Richmond, Virginia, to support Margaret Thatchers special branch folks and to be a liaison for local police support. Before I departed for an early morning trip to the airport, as a courtesy, I let her person in charge know that I was leaving. I was then told, The lady would like to speak with you. When I walked in, she said, I wanted to thank you for all youve done for me. May I have a picture with you? I still have that photograph framed at home.
I would like for them to be learning about the unknown of other cultures and races. Only through knowing each other will we ever make a difference living together. Take a lesson from my mother, who taught us to treat people the way we wanted to be treated. She taught us the Golden Rule, and we lived by it.

Should You Really Pee in the Swimming Pool? – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic
Posted: at 4:46 pm
To pee or not to pee? That is the question adults and children ask themselves every summer.
Each summer, some swimmers (and not just kids!) face a perplexing and some would say mildly gross problem when heading out to public swimming pools. That is, what should you do when you need to pee? If you go to a public pool, do you run the risk of swimming in other peoples pee? And if so, is this safe?
UrologistPetar Bajic, MD, weighs in on whether you should just go, or find yourself a proper restroom. Learn the scientific pros and cons to consider in favor of holding it or not. And just how safe is it to swim in public pools if other people have peed in them?
Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy
If you swim, youve probably at some point considered whether or not to just pee in the pool.
After all, when you gotta go, you gotta go! How you decide is a matter between you and your conscience and your bladder. Here are some facts to guide you.
Urine is 95% water. The other 5% includes byproducts of your digested food and drink, things like:
Absolutely not.
Holding your pee for a few minutes while you get out of the pool and head to the loo might be uncomfortable, but its not dangerous.
But pee isnt generally dangerous either. None of the substances mentioned above in normal urine are present in large enough amounts to be dangerous. So if you decide to go in the pool, or you swim in the diluted urine of someone else, its not harmful.
Urine isnt sterile, but this isnt necessarily a problem. Similar to the surface of the skin and other areas of the body, your bladdercontains a mix of healthy bacteria calledthe microbiome.Urine from the bladder can alsopick up bacteria from your urethra or your genitals on the way out. These bacteria, just like those that live on the skin or in the mouth, are generally not considered harmful, andmost swimming pools are treated with chlorine and other chemicals to reduce the risk of passing any diseases to others.
So the answer to the age-old question of whether you should pee in the pool or not?
Its largely about following the golden rule: Do unto others as you would like done to you.

Industry groups to fight Texas crackdown on ‘censorship’ of conservatives | TheHill – The Hill

Tech trade groups representing Facebook, Twitter and Google are vowing to fight what Texas is labeling as a crackdown on social media censorship of conservatives.
Under legislation signed Thursday by Texas Gov. Greg AbbottGreg AbbottHurricane Nicholas makes landfall in Texas, Louisiana White House welcomes fight with GOP governors over vaccine mandates Overnight Health Care Departing FDA vaccine regulators argue against COVID-19 booster shots MORE (R), social media companies with more than 50 million monthly users are forbidden from banning users based on their political views.
The sites are required to implement a complaint and appeals process for the content they remove, in which they provide a reason that content was removed and a review of their decision. The measure also bans email service providers from impending transmission of emails based on content.
Steve DelBianco, president and CEO of NetChoice, a coalition supporting online businesses, said in a statement that the bill clearly violates the First Amendment.
This law essentially creates a new Fairness Doctrine for the internet which will only make it harder for conservatives to share their news and views online, he said.
The Fairness Doctrine was a Federal Communications Commission policy created in 1949 that required broadcasters to present issues with a balanced view. The policy was eliminated in 1987.
Social media censorship has been a hot-button issue for conservatives, particularly in the wake of former President TrumpDonald TrumpBiden stumps for Newsom on eve of recall: 'The eyes of the nation are on California' On The Money: House Democrats cut back Biden tax hikes Abortion providers warn of 'chaos' if Supreme Court overrules Roe v Wade MOREs removal from major social media platforms following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
In a statement, Abbott said there is a dangerous movement by social media companies to silence conservative viewpoints and ideas.
Florida passed a similar law in April, which fines companies $250,000 a day for banning statewide politicians from their platforms and $25,000 a day for other politicians.
A federal judge blocked that law in June, after NetChoice and the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) successfully challenged it. That ruling is now on appeal.
DelBianco said the same outcome will almost certainly occur in Texas.
Tech groups warned that Texass intentions behind the law could backfire and lead to more issues.
Adam Kovacevich, CEO of Chamber of Progress, said in a statement that the law would allow more hate speech to exist online.
When you force social media platforms to pull their referees, the bad guys are going to throw more fouls, Kovacevich said.
CCIA President Matt Schruers said the law would prevent digital services from protecting their law-abiding users in Texas by fighting malicious online actors.
Its proponents claim this law protects free speech, but compelling private companies to host extremist content couldnt be further from what the Founders intended, Schruers said.

Undergarments advert ban lacks reasonability, Film Censorship Board must explain and announce SOP – The Star Online
Posted: at 4:45 pm
THE Film Censorship Board should have exercised restraint when it instructed two local TV stations to stop displaying visuals of men's and women's undergarments in their home shopping segments. Their directive lacked reasonability.
The Film Censorship Board must explain and clarify the relevant SOPs so that businesses may operate in accordance with regulations and work without interruption.
At the same time, disciplinary action must be taken against the related officers for creating their own rules and discretions, but contribute nothing to assuage the situation.
The affected broadcaster did not display any indecent visuals its models and mannequins were not arranged to exhibit obscene behaviour of donning undergarments.
Accusing the company that "any indecent visual displays, including advertising 'undergarments' will still offend the community" is far-fetched, and will not convince the public.
On the contrary, the officers' actions will cause the public to suspect that they were bent on fault-finding and deliberately making things difficult.
If not handled properly, their demeanour will backfire and cause a mockery of our nation's reputation.
Malaysia allows licenced businesses to sell and promote products. So long as the advertised products do not involve obscenity or violate the law particularly with e-commerce currently booming there are various platforms for innovative methods.
As long as manufacturers and retailers exercise self-discipline and operate within the scope of the law, this is the inevitable trend for innovation and e-commerce.
With the raging Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysian businesses have suffered a serious blow in sales and income and many have wound up.
Amidst such challenges and pressures, going online to publicise one's products is the best solution to adapt to in the current situation.
Unfortunately, despite the financial difficulties, there are overzealous officers who are adding salt to the wound.
This will not only cause public resentment, but also contravene the government's policy of fully promoting economic recovery.
