The Art of Matthew Rolston – Forbes
Posted: September 16, 2021 at 5:58 am
Matthew Rolston, Hittorff, La Fontaine des Mers (Neptune), 2016
Matthew Rolstons exhibition Art People: The Pageant Portraits on view through January 2, 2022, at the Laguna Art Museum is a show as beautiful, as mysterious, as life-affirming, and as much about human creativity and art, as The Pageant of the Masters itself. And in a sense, it is also a metaphor for the career and work of Matthew Rolston himself.
At several exhibition-related artist talks by Rolston that I attended recently, including one where Rolston was in conversation with Merle Ginsberg at the Britely Social Club at the Pendry in West Hollywood, and another at the Laguna Art Museum where Christina Binkley was his interlocutor, Rolston discussed both his career and early influences.
Rolston grew up in Los Angeles and attended pretty much every art school in the area, including Chouinard (the forerunner to CalArts), Otis, and Art Center in Pasadena. He became enamored of Hollywood Studio Portraits that he found among the Collectors stores on Hollywood Boulevard. At an early age, his career was launched when he got an assignment to shoot Steven Spielberg for Andy Warhols Interview Magazine.
Rolston was fortunate in finding an early home at Interview, as fortunate as Interview was to discover Rolston. Back then, in the days when Warhol himself was very much a presence at the magazine, Interview was published as an oversize large format newsprint monthly, with cover portraits of celebrities stylized and colorized by Richard Bernstein very much in a Warhol-esque color/block style.
Inside were short features and longer Q&As with celebrities and other notables, done in a manner that was meant to convey an actual conversation you were eavesdropping on, rather than a 60-Minutes Mike Wallace grilling. Due to Interviews large format, the portraits accompanying the text were also super-sized and often in Black & White (a money-saving strategy that became an editorial point-of-view). In the late 1970s and early 1980s, most mainstream magazine photography was focused on a casual hyper-realism stars in jeans and white T-shirts, or stylized real portraits such as Avedons The American West of West Virginia coal miners that conveyed a hard-won beauty.
Matthew Rolston, Cyndi Lauper, Headdress, Los Angeles, 1986,
Interview tacked in a different direction a post-modern return to Hollywood glamour. Rolstons portraits were the opposite of casual: They were highly staged, with great attention to lighting, every element thought out, with specific references to classic images of stars such as Garbo or Dietrich, and no detail too small to be important.
From Interview, Rolstons career exploded, doing work for magazines such as Rolling Stone (hes shot more than 100 covers), Vogue, W, Vanity Fair, Harpers Bazaar. The New York Times Magazine and O, the Oprah Magazine (He has shot Oprah for more than 40 magazine covers, more than any other photographer). Theres a sense of fun to many of his portraits, even a winking nod at the past.
Rolston went on to make films and music videos, including for Madonna, Jewel, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Foo Fighters, Beyonc, Seal, and Miley Cyrus as well as advertising campaigns for brands such as Estee Lauder, LOreal, GAP (his Khakis Swing video is particularly memorable), Revlon, Polo Ralph Lauren and Burberry, among others.
Beyond his photo, film and video work, Rolston has also served as creative director on hospitality projects for clubs, restaurants, and hotels (such as the Redbury Hotels), bringing his attentional to detail, style, and flair to every detail from marketing campaigns to staff uniforms.
Having reached the summit of so many facets of his professional career, several years ago Rolston decided to embark on a series of non-commissioned art projects, series that he conceptualizes and executes at his own initiative and own cost, spending at times years on the works.
Matthew Rolston, Joe Flip, 2010, from the series Talking Heads- The Vent Haven Portraits
Rolstons found inspiration for his first Art project Talking Heads: The Vent Haven Portraits in a museum of ventriloquist dummies, the Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Rolston set up a portrait studio in the museum and photographed each of his subjects in an identical manner: square format, low angle, monochromatic backdrop, and a single light source. The square format recalls Warhols Polaroids, and the white backgrounds, Avedons late work.
Rolston has said that his photos of the dummies was, on one level, an investigation of what makes us human. Which is interesting when you consider no humans appear in the series.
Matthew Rolston, Art People- The Pageant Portraits, Exhibition View, 2021
Art People: The Pageant Portraits, Rolstons second art project, currently on view in Laguna (with a beautiful catalogue available from the Museum or the projects website) consists of portraits of performers taken during the 2016 Pageant of the Masters. The Pageant is a 90-minute outdoor performance of a series of Tableaux vivants or Living Art in which volunteers are costumed, made-up and inserted into stage sets that, when framed and lit, reproduce art works for an audience of some 2600 attendees every night from the 4th of July to Labor Day, every year since 1933 (except for 1942-1945 during WWII and 2020 due to the pandemic. There is narration and although at times the figures move and even dance, the performers are neither actors nor dancers. They are more akin to reenacters. It is a most unique, uncanny performance and a memorable experience.
Rolston attended The Pageant as a child and many times since. On several occasions he approached The Pageant about doing portraits of the performers, to no avail. Then at a certain point, Rolston enthused about The Pageant sufficiently that journalist Christina Binkley pitched the Wall Street Journal on doing a feature on The Pageant and then suggested that Matthew be the photographer. The resulting 2015 article, At California Pageant, Volunteers Inhabit Works of Art provided Rolston the entre with Pageant officials such that they allowed him to make portraits of the following years 2016 Pageant performers.
Rolston set up a studio backstage for photographing the costumed (The Pageant uses two complete casts, so they can appear one week on, the other off) during breaks in rehearsals, at intermission, and immediately after performances, and shot the dummy heads that are used as makeup guides.
Rolston used an extremely high-resolution camera (100 megapixels) and then printed the color photos on 60-inch sheets of cotton rag paper. As a result, the detail is incredible, the colors rich, the effect otherworldly. Although each shoot was fast, Rolston nonetheless had ideas of how he hoped to pose the performers. Rolston shot them as is in their costume and makeup and did no retouching. To the contrary, the imperfections we see (acne, crows feet, sagging skin) are, here, critical to finding the human in the faked. Rolston did engage in some digital manipulation (for example, in one image the hands are enlarged for reasons of proportion, as a sculptor might do). And if you look closely enough at the photos, you can see Rolstons reflection in their iris taking the shot.
Matthew Rolston, Barye, Roger and Angelica (Angelica), 2016
The results are striking: There is a golden girl, who seems very much a Greek nymph come to life. Her right palm faces forward in a sign we might see in a Hindu goddess. Although her eyes are open and piercingly blue, there is something of a somnolent haze about her, like a girl who has not yet awakened to her adulthood. In contrast, Rolstons Eve, taken from Rubens and Brueghel the Elders Garden of Eden, is no youthful nubile, but a mature woman whose face carries its share of sorrow and who grasps the apple at her side as if its secrets were her own. The Laguna exhibition features a selection of images including portraits of the Pageants traditional closing image, Jesus and the Apostles from Da Vincis Last Supper. Rolston has said this project is an exploration of: What is Art? and Why do we make Art?
Matthew Rolston, Untitled, #Pa834-460, Palermo, Italy, 2013, from the series Vanitas- The Palermo ... [+] Portrait
Rolston has also completed a third art project which he has not yet exhibited, Vanitas: The Palermo Portraits which grapples with death. Rolston traveled to the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Italy, where there is a collection of upright mummified corpses, fully dressed, ready for the Resurrection. But there is also a message posted at the crypt that states simply, What you are now, we used to be. What we are now, you will become.
I confess that at first, I struggled with Rolstons stated premises. What can wooden dummies say about being human? What can non-artists creating a staged derivative of a real artwork teach us about making Art? And what do mummified corpses in a crypt teach us about death?
The answer came to me when watching a TED lecture on YouTube: According to Historian Yuval Noah Harari, what distinguishes us from all other creatures, what makes us human, is our ability to be creative, to tell stories.
Therefore, in photographing ventriloquist dummies, Rolston is attempting to give life, as much as Geppetto to Pinocchio, or Dr. Frankenstein to his creature. In his portraits of the inanimate we see our own need to infuse objects with life - that is what makes us human.
Similarly, when showing us the human in those who make a tableau vivant, the element Rolston adds to the already costumed and made-up is his art. Simple but true.
And in photographing the corpses in the Capuchin Crypt in Palermo, Rolston is giving us a vivid demonstration that what us separates us from corpses is our ability to make art of them. What is death if not the end of our potential to create?
One can argue then, that in Rolstons editorial and commercial work, even in his work as a creative director, the collaborative constraints imposed by his subjects or employers are an application of his creative talent, but not Art.
By contrast, in photographing ventriloquist dummies, or stand-in performers in tableaux vivant, or even the staged corpses in Palermo, we can see that without Rolstons intervention, without his creative act, they remain inanimate, imitations of art, rather than Art itself.
In this sense, the answer to the fundamental and existential questions Rolston asks in his Art become simple: Creating is what makes us human. Because we are human, we make Art. And when we die, we cease to have the capacity to be creative. And, finally, as long as we are alive, we can appreciate Rolstons Art People: The Pageant Portraits in all their beauty and mystery.

Forever chemicals: the hidden threat from the toxic PFAS on your shelf – The Guardian
Posted: at 5:58 am
For months Ive been watching the construction of our new garage. The breeze-block walls have been built, soffits are in place under the eaves, the concrete floor has been poured and slate tiles are being fixed on to the roof. Soon it will be time to render the exterior with sand and cement, to seal and waterproof the walls, to varnish the new fencing, and finish it all off with a shiny coat of paint.
That means a trip to the DIY store, where the shelves are full of marketing appeals. Glossy varnishes promise to colour wood for five years. Fence treatments are UV resistant and rainproof within half an hour and protect against rot. Masonry paint is no longer just about the colour: do I need pure brilliant or ultra-smooth, anti-mould or weatherproof?
Many of these items rely for their seemingly magical properties on PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), known as forever chemicals. This group of synthetic chemicals are used to prevent corrosion, reduce friction and make products waterproof and stain-resistant. Used in everything from cosmetics to food packaging, PFAS also show up in paint (as a binding agent and to give a smooth finish), wood lacquers (for repelling oil and water, and stain resistance) and sealants. They are used in the top layer of solar panels, artificial grass and firefighting foams.
PFAS incredibly strong carbon-flourine bonds mean these chemicals do not biodegrade. Renovations will not last for ever but PFAS persist and accumulate in soil, water, air, wildlife and our bodies. PFAS have been found in human breast milk and the blood of 97% of Americans. Exposure to some PFAS has been linked to fertility problems, changes in metabolism, and an increased risk of obesity and cancer yet so much still remains unknown about their long-term consequences.
Eroded by the elements or dumped down drains, PFAS end up in the water system. Once there, remediation removing the pollution is impossible. Water-treatment plants can use activated carbon to filter out some, but not all, PFAS and other contaminants, but it is expensive and requires high-temperature incineration. Most of the chemicals from that silky smooth painted wall or rust-free railing ultimately end up in the ocean.
Globally, PFAS have been widely documented in rivers, lakes, wetlands and every ocean; they are on Mount Everest and in Arctic sea ice. But they are most prevalent where there are lots of people in European cities river catchments, for example.
Wherever there is society, theres use of PFAS, says Prof Ian Cousins, an environmental chemist at Stockholm University, who has studied this huge, diverse group of chemicals for 20 years. PFAS are raining down everywhere youll find them in rainwater wherever you live at higher concentrations than the environmental standards set for rivers.
Cousins thinks this is a bigger problem than we have acknowledged. We shouldnt be releasing these man-made substances into the environment because theyre cycling around in water systems. Some transform into more harmful PFAS before coming back into air from the oceans, then raining down back on to land. The upstream solution is to not use these persistent chemicals in the first place.
The market for just building materials containing PFAS, however, is worth $26bn (19bn), according to the American Chemistry Council (compared with $753bn for the semiconductor industry). Two of the most widespread and hazardous PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), used to make Teflon, and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulphonic acid) have been phased out in most of the world but remain in the oceans. PFOA and PFOS were most detrimental at the manufacturing stage, where factory workers were exposed.
However, not all PFAS are toxic to humans: the chemistry is much more nuanced. Mapping the universe of PFAS, and trying to understand which are bad and which arent, is an important activity but that is going to take decades [to calculate] and by then it could be too late to do anything about it, says Cousins.
Some PFAS used in building materials include big molecules, such as fluoropolymers, used as coatings on roofing, that are not released when it rains. But they leach into the soil once a building gets knocked down and goes into landfill. Substances that add water-repellency or are used to make paints, inks, varnishes and lacquers are more of an immediate environmental concern, because they have smaller residual PFAS molecules that wash off more easily.
Many short-chain PFAS dissolve in water. In the ocean, most remain near the surface, in a layer between 50 and 200 metres deep. Gradually, this layer mixes with deeper water. Some chemicals sink, ending up in sediment or in the marine food chain; others remain in the water column. Some, such as PFOA, act like detergents, repelling water and rising back to the surface, to be released again into the atmosphere; Cousins and his team found that some PFAS get released as marine aerosols or droplets in sea spray, when wave movements create air bubbles.
In fact, sea-spray aerosols from the ocean are the biggest source of atmospheric PFAS. There, they can affect climate and cloud generation and all sorts of things, says Cousins. In North Americas Great Lakes region, PFAS levels in rainfall exceed that of other legacy contaminants, such as mercury and pesticides.
Cousins recommends that manufacturers take a precautionary approach, by designing alternatives that biodegrade. Some PFAS-free alternatives do exist. Roofing materials can be made with silicone or acrylic coatings. Acrylics can be used to make paints durable and glossy. Silicones or paraffin waxes can make wood lacquers repel water; silicones and epoxy resins can seal porous building materials.
However, because ingredients are not always listed on the tin, it is tricky for shoppers to make informed decisions. A simple guide is to avoid anything labelled as perfluoro, polyfluoro or fluoro, which indicates they contain PFAS.
And it is not just amateurs doing up their homes who can vote with their wallets. Owners of large buildings, such as hospitals, universities and commercial property developers, have a lot of focused buying power too, according to Hannah Ray, of the Green Science Policy Institute. She wants PFAS chemicals limited to essential use only, where no feasible alternative is available. There has been some progress, she says: Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Sweden have submitted their intention to restrict PFAS as a class and the US state of Maine will ban most uses of PFAS from 2030.
The Green Science Policy Institute warns of regrettable substitution replacing a hazardous PFAS with a slightly different PFAS not yet found to be toxic.
In the meantime, I am looking for safer PFAS-free alternatives for my garage, such as linseed oil to coat the wooden fence, and water-based eco paint ranges, although even these do include small amounts of PFAS as binders. The Cradle 2 Cradle certified building products list is a good place to start, and if there is a choice between glueing something or mechanically fixing it together with screws, I will choose the latter, because otherwise it is hard to know what the long-term effects of my choices will be.
Some PFAS could have effects that could be catastrophic, but its hard to predict, says Cousins. We could discover weve all been using a chemical thats going to make us sick but thats very difficult to remove from the environment.

Aukus submarines banned from New Zealand as pact exposes divide with western allies – The Guardian
Posted: at 5:58 am
New Zealand is not part of a new security pact between Australia, the UK and US, in what experts say is an illustration of the distance between the country and its traditional allies.
On Wednesday, the three countries announced a trilateral security partnership, Aukus, aimed at confronting China, which will include helping Australia to build nuclear-powered submarines. New Zealand and Canada were notably absent.
New Zealands longstanding nuclear-free policy also means that Australian submarines developed under the deal are banned from New Zealand waters. New Zealands position in relation to the prohibition of nuclear-powered vessels in our waters remains unchanged, the prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, said on Thursday.
She said the new agreement in no way changes our security and intelligence ties with these three countries, as well as Canada. Asked by reporters if New Zealand had been offered a place, Ardern said, We werent approached, nor would I expect us to be.
However, New Zealand is conspicuous by its absence, said Geoffrey Miller, international analyst at the Democracy Project. Canada and New Zealand are sort of being relegated here. It shows how far apart Australian and New Zealand foreign policymakers are.
Prof David Capie, director of the Centre for Strategic Studies at Victoria University in Wellington, said New Zealand was not being sidelined, but the deal more starkly illustrated existing differences between the country and its security partners.
It highlights that much deeper level of Australian integration into US defence and security planning and thinking about China and about the region, he said. Theres no doubt this is a big deal. But New Zealand and Australia were in a different space to begin with, and this has perhaps just made that look sharper again.
Australia and New Zealand are culturally quite similar and geographically in similar positions, but they are poles apart in terms of the way they see the world, Miller said. I think this alliance underlines that theyre going in very different directions.
The opposition National party has been critical of New Zealands absence from the deal, saying it looks like New Zealand was left out of the loop.
The government needs to come clean about what happened here. Does this new partnership affect our Five Eyes relationship? What about our relationship with Australia, the one country that we have the closest defence and economic partnership? And will this have an impact on our standing as a responsible international citizen? defence spokesperson Gerry Brownlee asked.
The government needs to explain why it looks as though New Zealand has been left out of the loop, Brownlee said. Were we consulted or at the table to discuss with a group of countries that weve considered likeminded for quite some time?
While the agreement does not specifically cite China, Beijing looms large in the background. The pact comes at a time of rising tensions in the Asia-pacific region, especially over Taiwan, and Chinas increasing presence in the South China Sea. US officials speaking to reporters before the announcement did not mention China, speaking instead about sustaining and improving deterrence, but left little doubt which power Aukus was supposed to deter.
This is driven overwhelmingly by concerns about China, Capie said. Notwithstanding the fact that China is not mentioned in the statements, its all about China.
And as Australia has adopted increasingly hawkish rhetoric on Beijing, New Zealands milder positioning has sometimes raised eyebrows across the Tasman and in the UK.
Over the past year, foreign minister Nanaia Mahuta has repeatedly emphasised New Zealands independent and values-based foreign policy. In April, the minister caused a minor stir with comments that New Zealand was uncomfortable with expanding the remit of the Five Eyes, a remark that some saw as a shift away from that alliance. In China, state-run media heralded the comments as New Zealand secure[ing] its interests by distancing from US-led clique.
To be clear, New Zealand values the Five Eyes relationship, Mahuta told the Guardian in May. Its a security and intelligence framework from which we can work with trusted allies on those specific issues. But we dont need the Five Eyes to articulate where we stand on human rights issues.
The Aukus agreement illustrates some of those differences between Australias increasingly close alignment with the US on China issues, and New Zealands relative distance.
The pact does not include Canada, the other Five Eyes partner, either. In recent years, Canada and New Zealand have had similarities in their orientation toward Beijing condemning human rights breaches on specific issues in a case-by-case way, but avoiding strong statements on the country more broadly.
Miller said both countries were trying to walk the tightrope a bit, and not trying to get into a big spat with China.
There had been quite a lot of pressure put on New Zealand to join the western position on China, Miller said, but New Zealand largely held firm through all those overtures. I think in the end, this is the alternative.
The primary focus of the Aukus agreement is supply of nuclear submarines to Australia a development that would see parts of the Australian naval force barred from New Zealand waters.
Since the mid-1980s, New Zealand has had a strict policy keeping its territorial sea, land and airspace as nuclear-free zones. The policy, made partly in solidarity with Pacific islands suffering the fallout of nuclear testing, created a rift with the United States, which suspended its obligations to New Zealand under the Anzus treaty.
Although any nuclear-powered submarines are barred from New Zealand ports, that prohibition may be more theoretical than logistical, given Australian and US submarines likely have little reason to be in New Zealand waters. I dont think in practical terms, its going to create a problem, Capie said. But the principle that some of the defence capabilities of your only ally are unable to visit your waters is an uncomfortable one.
In her statement, Ardern emphasised New Zealands Pacific connections in what Capie said could be read as a nod to the countrys nuclear-free history. New Zealand is first and foremost a nation of the Pacific and we view foreign policy developments through the lens of what is in the best interest of the region, Ardern said.
We welcome the increased engagement of the UK and US in the region and reiterate our collective objective needs to be the delivery of peace and stability and the preservation of the international rules based system.
Capie said Arderns statement reinforced the message of her other recent speeches, that NZ prefers to focus on its immediate neighbourhood rather than on maritime Asia where that much sharper military confrontation with China is playing out, he said. [Thats] where the new Australian subs would be operating.

Memes and fan reactions for episode 6 of What If ? on Disney + – Market Research Telecast
Posted: at 5:58 am
New premiere of the Marvel Cinematic Universe this Wednesday with the sixth episode of What If? on the streaming service Disney+. On this occasion the central characters were Killmonger, voiced by Michael B. Jordan, and Tony Stark, although without the interpretation of Robert Downey Jr. It was another vibrant episode and the fans made it clear on the networks are their reactions.
This program takes the viewer to know worlds totally different from the conventional reality of the MCU, something that can be given thanks to the power of animation. Todays delivery was called What if Killmonger rescued Tony Stark?, with the following synopsis: An American soldier named Killmonger rescues Tony Stark when his Humvee is attacked in Afghanistan.
When the antagonist of Black Panther interrupts the events in Afghanistan, at the same time displaces any future project of Stark to become Iron Man, which means that in that universe the Avengers could not get together. Killmonger serves as a US Navy SEAL and manages to gain Tonys trust after revealing Obadiah Stanes plans against him.
This leads to Killmonger conveniently introducing him to an automated combat robot under the excuse that it is his doctoral thesis. The genius, millionaire, playboy and philanthropist helps him without problems by contacting the arms dealer, Ulysses Klaue, since they need vibranium, but it is all about a trap in which James Rhodes and TChalla die, with the voice of the late Chadwick. Boseman, and until then we did not know his true motivation.
Upon returning to the United States, he betrays Stark and assassinates him, something that intensifies a war with Wakanda that had begun after Rhodes death. Killmonger arrives with Klaue to his nation, but he also turns his back on him and kills him to offer it as proof that he is no longer with the Americans and only wants to return home. The war conflict unfolds and finally the villain achieves what he was looking for from the beginning: to be the next Black Panther.

CBD for arthritis: What the research shows – Open Access Government
Posted: at 5:58 am
CBD shows promise in reducing the side effects of arthritis, but more long-term studies are needed to examine whether it can prevent and fully treat the condition.
CBD is short for cannabidiol (CBD), a popular cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. Cannabis is an incredibly unique and complex plant, full of compounds that give it its characteristic effects, taste, and smell. Compounds include cannabinoids like CBD and THC, terpenes, flavonoids, lipids, and other plant compounds. CBD is popular and widely appreciated for its well-tolerated nature and its vast range of therapeutic effects that can benefit our physical and mental wellbeing.
Arthritis is a common condition that affects individuals of all ages and causes inflammation and joint pain. The individual symptoms experienced will depend on the type of arthritis. Still, they generally include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, high inflammation levels, weakness, and restricted movement around the joint (1). Two of the most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. While there is currently no cure for arthritis, treatments including surgery, physiotherapy, and medication have been successful in slowing down arthritis for many patients.
CBD has already been utilised to ease and assist many health conditions, including insomnia, anxiety and depression, nausea and chronic pain. Under the umbrella of chronic pain conditions is arthritis. While studies are still in their infancy, the results are promising.
Traditional medication for arthritis varies, but usually includes a mix of different options (2):
While these medications are effective, safety from long-term use is often questioned. Repeated use of these drugs has been shown to damage the arthritis patients heart, liver, stomach and kidneys. When doses are too high or taken for a prolonged period, this can also cause liver damage in some instances (3).
More patients are becoming aware of alternative treatment methods like lifestyle changes or physical therapy. In addition, natural medication alternatives like CBD have risen in popularity as an option with fewer adverse side effects.
The Endocannabinoid system CBD can lower inflammation and pain by its interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system responsible for regulating body processes, including our mood, metabolism, energy levels and pain output. The ECS consists of endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors and receptor proteins. Cannabinoids like CBD can interact with receptors in our brain and nervous system and cause an uptake of certain compounds and hormones (4).
CBD can influence how our brain perceives pain and increases the level of serotonin by interacting with serotonin receptors (5). This creates feelings of relaxation in our brain and body, which can help reduce the intensity of arthritis side effects.
Cannabinoids can also block specific receptors that influence inflammation and pain within the body. In particular, CBD can block receptors that allow for levels of anandamide, an endocannabinoid, to increase in the body (6). This affects the way receptors respond to signals that they receive, reducing both inflammation and pain.
The relationship between CBD and common health conditions like chronic pain has long been a topic of interest. Researchers have begun to branch out to similar conditions like arthritis, in particular, rheumatoid arthritis. This autoimmune and inflammatory disease causes the immune system to attack healthy cells, usually resulting in one of several joints being attacked.
One of the first trials that investigated the effectiveness of cannabis-based medication to treat rheumatoid arthritis involved patients who used Sativex, a spray containing cannabis extract, over five weeks. Participants found the drug was effective in reducing inflammation and pain while also contributing to improved sleep quality. Any reported side effects were mild and did not affect the patients quality of life (7).
Another study involving rats looked at the topical application of CBD gels for joint pain and inflammation. Researchers found that the transdermal absorption from the CBD was sufficient enough to reduce joint swelling and reduce pro-inflammatory biomarkers. They concluded that topical CBD application has strong therapeutic potential for relief from arthritis and inflammation-related conditions without extreme adverse side effects (8).
While preliminary research is highly promising, more long-term and large-scale studies involving human participants are still required for researchers to comprehend the effects of CBD on arthritis symptoms fully.
Arthritis is incredibly common and affects individuals from all walks of life. With the rise in the prevalence of different types of arthritis, significant attention has been given to preventing this disease.
The causes of arthritis are complex and can result from several risk factors that create a compounding effect (9). These include:
While patients cannot control most of these risk factors, one that can be monitored is obesity. It is well acknowledged that obesity is highly influenced by lifestyle choices like diet, exercise, sleep and even stress levels (10). This means incorporating a healthy and well-balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, increasing the frequency of exercise, practising mindfulness, and getting good quality sleep.
CBD can help reduce stress and improve your quality of sleep by its interaction with the ECS. When it interacts with cannabinoid and serotonin receptors in your brain and nervous system, it can improve your mood, promote relaxation, and reduce feelings of anxiety (11).
Arthritis is a complex autoimmune disease that can cause your body to attack joints, and over time, it destroys bone and cartilage that leads to the loss of joint function and stability. While symptoms of arthritis can vary, depending on the individual and how severe the disease progression is, some common side effects are often experienced across the board.
Chronic pain can result from an injury or illness like arthritis and is classified as high levels of pain that last over a few months and remain persistent even after full recovery. While the level of chronic pain can vary, depending on the individual, it can be severe and drastically affect the arthritis patients quality of life (12).
Pain is one of the most reported side effects of arthritis, and while painkillers can manage it, the side effects of these medications on top of what is already taken to treat arthritis can be detrimental to the patients health long-term. Because of this, more individuals are seeking natural and more gentle pain-relief options, like CBD. CBD oil remains a popular choice for many patients as studies have shown its effectiveness in reducing the severity of chronic pain output.
A 2017 review investigated CBD use for general chronic pain and summarised the key findings from various studies. After analysing the results of dozens of trials and reviews, researchers concluded that substantial evidence pointed at cannabis being a suitable treatment option for adults who experience chronic pain (13).
Another study supported these findings, with researchers noting that CBD and other cannabinoids could offer a new and effective treatment option for chronic pain patients by reducing inflammation and pain. They also concluded that patients were unlikely to build up a tolerance to the potent effects of CBD, which was beneficial, as this meant the dosage did not need to be increased over time (14).
CBD is a popular cannabinoid, but it doesnt create euphoric high and psychoactive effects like THC, another cannabinoid found in cannabis. Researchers in a 2015 study suggested that when CBD worked in conjunction with other cannabinoids, it can influence receptor systems within our body and the ECS. Anandamide is a compound that has been associated with reducing pain perception and improving mood in individuals, and CBD can increase the levels of anandamide in our body (15).
Another commonly expressed side effect of arthritis is joint swelling and widespread inflammation. Most but not all types of arthritis are the results of inflammation from the immune system. In a healthy individual, the body produces white blood cells and compounds to protect from infection (16). However, in inflammatory conditions like arthritis, the immune system will trigger a response that causes damage to its own tissues.
Cannabinoids like CBD have been seen to suppress inflammatory responses, which can reduce arthritis symptoms. Cannabinoids have potent properties that regulate pathways involving the suppression of cytokines in inflammatory sites and activating apoptosis within immune cells. Due to this, researchers believe CBD could be a beneficial preventative treatment for diseases that involve chronic inflammation within the body, like arthritis. However, more research is still required (17).
Joint pain experienced by the arthritis patient can also exacerbate inflammation levels as pain and inflammation have a close relationship and often walk hand-in-hand in many diseases. Inflammation can be chronic or acute. Arthritis patients have chronic inflammation due to a prolonged inflammatory response which can increase oxidative stress, directly affecting healthy organs and tissues (18).
Another common side effect of arthritis is reduced appetite or weight loss due to the extreme pain and stiffness that can directly affect the patients quality of life, mood, metabolism, and affinity for food or eating. Some arthritis medications can also affect appetite, resulting in unintentional weight loss.
A 2016 study found that the medication leflunomide, commonly prescribed to patients with rheumatoid arthritis, was associated with weight loss. This is because leflunomide can cause nausea, diarrhoea, and changes in bowel habits, all of which can influence weight management (19).
Long-term appetite loss can adversely affect the patient, as this could lead to insufficient nutrient intake and fatigue due to extreme muscle loss. Most studies that research the relationship between CBD and appetite have shown variable data, with some showing weight gain and others showing distinct weight loss (20). Despite the inconclusive research, researchers conclude CBD has a potent effect on hunger and appetite.
Another study investigated the relationship between CBD and nausea and found noticeable results. Research from 2011 suggests CBD and its interaction with the endocannabinoid system lead to the regulation and reduction of vomiting and nausea in both animals and humans (21).
As a common cause of arthritis can be excess weight or obesity, a reduced appetite or weight loss can prove beneficial in improving their health and reducing their symptoms. However, for patients at a healthy weight or who are already underweight, unintended weight loss and a decreased appetite can be harmful to their health.
CBD shows promise in reducing the common side effects and symptoms of arthritis by interacting with the ECS to lower inflammation and reduce the perception of pain.
Because of this, many arthritis patients are beginning to use CBD in conjunction with traditional medication. While current research is promising, more studies are required to increase the global therapeutic use of CBD.

Atlantis, Which No Serious Historian Thinks Existed, Is Making People Insane on Twitter – Daily Beast
Posted: at 5:57 am
This summer a new documentary TV series premiered on the Discovery Channel. Hunting Atlantis follows a pair of experts on a quest to solve the greatest archaeological mystery of all timethe rediscovery of Atlantis. Theres just one problem: theres not an ancient historian or archeologist working in the field today who believes Atlantis was a real historical city.
Academics and documentary filmmakers often find themselves at odds, but as criticism of the show spilled over onto social media things turned ugly. A well-respected archaeologist was verbally abused by a flood of true believers who were committed not just to Atlantis, but also to white supremacy and eugenics.
Hunting Atlantis is co-hosted by Stel Pavlou and volcanologist Jess Phoenix. Phoenix is an expert in natural disasters (specifically volcanic eruptions), who has spent a great deal of time in the field as a geologist. In 2018 she even ran for Congress. Pavlou is a successful TV host, producer, screenwriter, and bestselling author: one of his films is a cult classic and his childrens books have won awards. The basis for their show is Pavlous argument that the date of Atlantiss destruction should be placed at the beginning of the fifth millennium BCE.
That the show has something of a sensational bent is to be expected; making archeology TV friendly often involves inflating or sensationalizing what can otherwise be quite dry material. There are also certain ancient artifacts and locationslike the Holy Grail or Noahs Arkthat hold the attention of viewers and will always be evergreens for documentary history-telling.
As bioarchaeologist Stephanie Halmhofer has discussed in an insightful blog post, everybody loves Atlantis, thanks to things like Disneys Atlantis: The Lost Empire, DCs Aquaman, and the popular television show Stargate: Atlantis. People are broadly familiar with it as a cherished part of their childhood imagination.
The difference between the Ark and Atlantis is that while people acknowledge that there was a cup that Jesus drunk out of or that the Ark of the Covenant existed, I dont know any archeologists who think Atlantis was a real place. Searching for it, for most archeologists, is only slightly more reasonable than hunting for Narnia. Greatest archeological mystery it is not.
Our sources for Atlantis are the philosophical dialogues of Plato (specifically the Republic, Timaeus, and Critias) in which characters in the fictional dialog have a hypothetical conversation about the ideal society. Atlantis, in Platos imagination, was a technologically advanced and harmonious society that gradually descended into corruption, disorder, and greedy warmongering. It was ultimately destroyed by a series of earthquakes that led to the city disappearing into the ocean.
It was the presentation of Atlantis as an actual place that drew concern from archaeologists when the show was first announced in May 2021. With so much rigorous archaeological research going undiscussed and underfunded, there was a palpable sense of frustration that a popular channel would air another show on what experts call pseudoarcheology.
To his credit, when challenged on social media, Pavlou offered to share what he described as the academic paper on which the show was based. Having been volunteered by a colleague, Dr. Flint Dibble, a Mediterranean archeologist and Marie Skodowska-Curie Research Fellow at Cardiff University, rose to the challenge.
Dibble was unimpressed: I read the paper carefully, refreshed my own research on Plato and the archaeology of Athens in the 5th millennium BCE and wrote a Twitter thread. This thread debunked the paper and exposed its logical faults in some places where scholarly research was cited, explored examples where conclusions were drawn from uncited statements.
The scholarly consensus, he told me, is very clear: Atlantis was not a real place.
After watching the show, Dibble said, he remained unpersuaded. He was concerned by the way that the credible research of legitimate archaeologists was being used to prop unfounded claims about Atlantis. If you watch carefully, he explained, youll notice that scholars never mention the name Atlantis nor Plato on air. At no times on air do the two co-hosts ask the scholars any questions about Atlantis or bring it up in front of them.
When I corresponded with Pavlou he was frustrated with the response from academics on social media. At no point have I ever claimed Atlantis is real, he said, I find it hard to believe [Plato] invented the whole story None of [the research I have done] proves that Atlantis is real but [it] does suggest there may have been a real myth buried somewhere behind Platos writing. Pavlou told me that he is agnostic about the existence of Atlantis: Atlantis as Plato wrote it certainly doesnt exist but there may have been a myth tied to the memory of earlier geological events.
There are many reasons that scholars would dispute this more nuanced claim, but this is a different kind of argument. But even so this is not the impression one gets from watching the show. The series ends with Pavlou saying that, It feels like Atlantis could be right beneath our feet. A feeling is not a statement of fact, but this and many other elements in the show imply a belief in the historical Atlantis.
When I asked Pavlou why an Atlantis-agnostic would make a show called Hunting Atlantis he claimed that he had originally pitched the series as a myth busting style show. He wasnt even originally supposed to host it, he added. Over time, and with input from producers and executives, the series morphed into something else: a show grounded in his theories of a preexisting earlier myth. As someone who has made documentaries myself, I have to wonder: what parts of the show stem from the host, which are the input of the production team, and what is just slick marketing?
Dibble told me that he asked the hosts and producers for a comment about misrepresenting the research of the academics interviewed on the show. This is when things started to get heated, Pavlous wife made some ad hominem attacks on Dibble that questioned his credentials and dragged his family into the fray (Dibbles father was a famous archeologist, but in a different period and field).
Dibble, in turn, contextualized his objections by exploring the problematic ways that Atlantis has been utilized throughout history. By the next day, Dibble said, both he and Pavlou were engaged in a full-on Twitterstorm. He woke up to hundreds of colleagues and supporters defending him to Pavlou and similar numbers of Atlantis-believers trying to dispute his claims and insulting him.
At one point, he said, Robert Sepehr, a pseudoarchaeologist who has a YouTube channel called Atlantean Gardens and praises Nazi research, began targeting colleagues and friends who were tweeting about the situation. From archeology to white supremacists overnight, the bizarre situation raises the question: how did we get here?
For almost two thousand years after Platos death everyone read the story about Atlantis for what it was: a fictional account about an ideal city that lost its way and was being use by Plato as a foil for his hometown of Athens.
Interest in Atlantis as a real place first emerged, writes Halmhofer, in the 1500s when early European explorers wondered if the indigenous people of Central America were the descendants of the Atlanteans. Interest in this theory continued to build over several centuries until, in 1882, Ignatius Donnelly published his highly influential book Atlantis: The Antediluvian World and inaugurated a new era of study. In it, Donnelly claimed that Atlantis was the origin point for human civilization. Others took up this cause and argued that the Atlanteans were the ancestors of a particular group of people: the Aryan race. This, as I imagine you have already guessed, is where things take a dark turn.
As Halmhofer writes on her blog and Dibble articulates in one of his Twitter threads, the history of Atlantis has, since the nineteenth century, been interwoven with the study of evolution and eugenics. Plato ends the Critias with a discussion of how the divine nature of the Atlantides was corrupted when it was mixed with the inferior nature of mere human beings.
The discussion lends itself well to 19th and 20th century eugenicist theories of the races. The Nazi Institute of Atlantis founded by Himmler aimed to find evidence for the theory that the Aryan race was descended from the biologically divine Atlantides.
To be inescapably clear, racism and eugenics are not at work in Hunting Atlantis. On this Pavlou and Dibble are in agreement. Pavlou told me There is nothing about the show, my paper, or the way I live my life that has any connection whatsoever. Dibble agreed [Pavlous] family fought Nazis in WWIIhe seems like he would be someone fun to have a beer with, if it wasn't for this show and the Twitter eruption from it. Some worry, though, that white supremacists might use this show to support their dangerous claims. Indeed, some already are.
While many people love reading archeological fan fiction in their youth and some become archaeologists because of it, pseudoarcheology is not always harmless. We find ourselves in a difficult position. Where are the boundaries between pseudoarcheology, slick soundbites, and minority opinions? Do good production values always mean bad or exaggerated archeology? And, is every writer, TV host, or academic responsible for the potential misreading or misuse of our arguments?
None of us begrudge children who love comics about Atlantis or expect to receive a letter from Hogwarts, but does the blurring of the line between minority opinion and scientific facts harm cultural and scientific literacy in wider society? Can we afford confusion in a society already plagued by a lack of trust in expertise and information accuracy?
Academic concerns about how ancient history can be used by white supremacists are far from unique; the poster child for this issue is the wildly successful show Ancient Aliens. Here the problem is even more acute because crediting aliens for human ingenuity involves erasing the contributions and work of historically excluded groups. In this series, a team of commentatorsmost famously the meme-able Georgio Tsoukalosanalyze ancient artifacts and suggest that they were built by or refer to extraterrestrials.
For several years Dr. David Anderson at Radford University has criticized the show and called for a retraction of some of its claims. Anderson told me that many of the claims made in the show are based on troubling older work. As an example, he mentioned the sarcophagus lid of the Maya ruler of Pacal. In 1968 international best-selling author, theme-park founder, and convicted white collar criminal Erich von Dnikenwhose book Chariots of the Gods pioneered the Ancient Aliens theoriesclaimed that the image was an astronaut blasting off in a spaceship.
A recent tweet by Tsoukalos rehearses this interpretation. The basic issue, said Anderson, is [that] these claims don't even begin to ask where or when Pacal's sarcophagus was found and what it might have meant to the Maya, they simply squint at a confusing image from a foreign culture and say it kind of looks like a rocket ship.
When we compare this image to other pieces of Maya art we find that it is full of symbols that are widely known and repeated. Theres no mystery here: the lid depicts a Maya ruler falling from this world to the underworld at the moment of his death. The artifacts are taken out of their original context, people are asked what does this look like to you? and an alien genealogy is offered with no regard for ancient interpretations or contexts.
Then theres the helicopter found in the temple of the Egyptian Pharoah Seti I at Abydos. Ancient Aliens suggests that a strange looking hieroglyph is a helicopter or flying saucer but traditional archeology identifies it as a re-carved inscription in which one name had replaced another. It might look strange but this, said Anderson, is just because the paint has been chipped away. The roots of many of von Dnikens theories about Ancient Aliens are actually pop culture. The theory that aliens built the pyramids, for example, first shows up in the 1898 science fiction novel, Edisons Conquest of Mars. In a forthcoming article, Anderson shows that von Dniken was pipped to the post by science fiction writers who had already hypothesized that ancient people would have confused aliens with gods.
To say that the theories that underpin Ancient Aliens have been rejected is to understate the case. In the foreword to a book debunking von Dnikens claims Carl Sagan wrote: That writing as careless as von Dniken's, whose principal thesis is that our ancestors were dummies, should be so popular is a sober commentary on the credulousness and despair of our times. I also hope for the continuing popularity of books like Chariots of the Gods? in high school and college logic courses, as object lessons in sloppy thinking.
The troubling part of this kind of pop entertainment isnt so much that its wrong (though that is incredibly frustrating to academics), but rather that it erodes the accomplishments and ingenuity of ancient peoples. As University of Iowa historian Sarah Bond has written, it is not a coincidence that these peoples are almost universally non-white and non-European (the lone European outlier, of course, is Stonehenge). The racist assumption that indigenous peoples werent intelligent or evolved enough to build the Native American earthen mounds in the eastern half of the United States or the Great Zimbabwe in Africa fed early twentieth century archeology and public policy. In fact, said Anderson, when President Andrew Jackson called for the removal of Native Americans to Oklahoma, a call that led to the Trail of Tears, he did so [by] invoking the lost white race of Mound Builders. Bad archeology has violent real-world consequences.
This is not to say, as professor and Ancient Aliens voice-of-reason Robert Cargill, has pointed out that everyone who believes in ancient alien theory is racist. The problem is structural and systemic, but in some cases, the racism is shockingly straightforward. Museum curator Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews has gathered choice quotes from various archeologists including a von Dniken question that went: was the black race a failure and did the extraterrestrials change the genetic code by gene surgery and then programme a white or yellow race? [sic]
As modern archeologists have debunked the racist assumptions that everything of value was built by white people, the conspiracy theories have just shifted target. The aliens-theorists are the heirs to this lineage. Anderson told me, Ancient Alien authors started picking up the same examples of temples and monuments that European Colonialists imagined being built by lost white races but instead imagined that that they were built by extraterrestrials.
The same assumptions of indigenous incompetence are at the heart of alien mythologies, yet with 196 episodes and sixteen seasons under its belt the Ancient Aliens juggernaut continues apace.
Looking at Hunting Atlantis, perhaps the lingering question here is, what and who is excluded by the Atlantis myth? Why do we search for this fictional utopia? Is our collective fascination with and search for Atlantis a form of escapism? Bond, who has tweeted one example of cultural erasure involving Atlantis, said to me, People would rather focus on it than the mess we live in now. But ignoring science is what got us into this mess in the first place.
Does the search for a perfect city prevent us from fixing our own social problems in the present? If it does then perhaps part of the blames lies with us, the viewing public? Only time will tell but, in the meantime, the mythic status of Atlantis has been settled by unlikely authority: IMDB.com categorizes the show as fantasy.

The next national apology: Future Canadians might regret expansion of medically assisted dying laws – The Conversation CA
Posted: at 5:57 am
As Canadians head to the polls next week, I reflect on what big apology a future government will one day issue.
Past transgressions have made governments increasingly adept at belatedly saying sorry. Even kind and polite Canada is not immune. From lamenting wartime internments and removal of voting rights, to turning away Sikh refugees some to their deaths on the Komagata Maru, to residential school atrocities against Indigenous children, national apologies have become opportunities for press conferences of contrition.
In the hope of foregoing future photo opportunities, perhaps we should consider what the next big apology might be, and avoid needing to make it.
Reconsidering wide expansion of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) may be one such opportunity. In March 2021, the Liberal government, with the support of the Bloc Qubcois, passed new MAiD legislation removing previous safeguards (notably, both left and right were united against this, with NDP, conservatives and Greens voting against). It is one of the most liberal facilitated suicide laws in the world.
Consider past justifications for one of the most notorious policies discriminating against women with mental illness and Indigenous women: Forced sterilization. Forced sterilizations were justified by a combination of devaluing certain lives and rationalizing that we were actually doing the right thing, and occurred across the world for decades. The policy officially continued in Canada until the mid 1970s, with women continuing to report the practice even into the late 2010s. While clearly coercive, society comforted itself by rationalizing that these women were mentally defective and unfit, that they would be better off not having children and that society was somehow pursuing a greater good.
Ableist assumptions, valuing some human lives more than others, have been manifest in societal policies for centuries. In September 1921, at the Second International Eugenics Congress, Alexander Graham Bell and prominent academics of the day provided expert reassurances of enlightened beneficence with the tag line, Eugenics is the self direction of human evolution, promising a better future for all and setting the stage for justifying decades of mistreatment of the mentally ill and marginalized.
Now consider the arguments made in favour of providing MAiD for mental illness: That MAiD is about respecting autonomy and providing compassionate relief from suffering. That MAiD is about dignity and valuing what people want. And perhaps most importantly, that MAiD is not the same as the tragic suicides society aims to prevent.
When MAiD is provided in near end-of-life conditions, when we know someone will not improve and faces enduring suffering, the above arguments are valid and supported by evidence. In these situations, we find that white, wealthy and privileged people tend to seek MAiD.
All the above arguments become fantasies once MAiD is expanded beyond near end-of-life conditions to the non-dying with disabilities and mental illness, as the Trudeau government intends, with even more MAiD restrictions lifting in 2023.
In these situations, evidence shows that populations marginalized by poverty, loneliness and unresolved life suffering seek MAiD, with twice as many women as men being euthanized for psychiatric disorders. This is the same ratio of women to men who attempt suicide when mentally ill but who, absent the 100 per cent lethal means of MAiD, survive the attempt and do not try again.
Yet, despite lack of evidence that MAiD can responsibly be provided for mental illness, MAiD expansionists blindly forward the same arguments to push broader access to MAiD with fewer safeguards. This benefits the white, wealthy and privileged to have even more autonomy, while sacrificing our most vulnerable, those marginalized by sexism, racism, ageism and ableism, to entirely avoidable premature deaths.
Ironically, it sacrifices them to these deaths under the pretence of autonomy, disregarding how internalized oppression would force our most vulnerable to make an impossible, and unfair, choice to die well because society never gave them a chance to live well. Evidence shows that these are often ambivalent suicidal wishes in people who could have gotten better and are seeking escape from social disenfranchisement, not from inevitable medical suffering. These people would want to live if given a true choice of life with dignity instead of the enticement of a painless death to escape a painful life.

From eugenics to forced sterilizations, public figures and ideologues of the day ignored cautions of dissent and assured society it was doing the right thing, allowing us to overlook the reality that the most vulnerable amongst us were being discarded.
Today, ignoring the evidence, prominent politicians, senators and, sadly, some of my psychiatrist colleagues are similarly reassuring Canadians that our wide MAiD expansion is enlightened and safe. It may be safe for the privileged who already live well and will have more autonomy to die better. For others, the non-dying disabled and marginalized whose social suffering will be solved with death, it will eventually be called something else.
If we knowingly ignore this reality, we can anticipate the inevitable press conference with a future Canadian prime minister issuing a heartfelt apology for our current sins.
