After two weeks, you could hear whispers in some circles that the Bills offense had peaked in 2020 and wouldnt hit those same highs in 2021. The team opened with a loss to Pittsburgh, but even a wipeout win over Miami came courtesy of three turnovers. The vaunted offense did not perform particularly efficiently or prolifically.
Those concerns may quiet some after a 43-point show against Washingtons hyped but underperforming defense. The Bills gained 8.2 YPA through the air.
Now, they get a Houston team reeling, with a massive spread of separating them.Josh Allen and Co. should have another big week.
The Rams showed their offense is for real as they passed all over the Bucs for 8.5 YPA. Now, they get to face a Cardinals defense that took it on the chin from the Vikes in Week 2 but did have success against a solid offense in Tennessee. LAs offensive line doesnt have the holes the Titans do that allowed the Cardinals pass rush to have a hey day. Watch for offensive fireworks here.
Speaking of the Rams, they managed to corral a Bucs offense that had previously tossed the rock all over the field at will. Dont letTom Bradys stat line fool you as the team managed just 17 points before garbage time.
Has the market downgraded this unit after they struggled against the first real defense they faced?
On the opposite end of the spectrum from the Bills, it comes as little surprise given the line that the market projects the Texans as the lowest-scoring team this week. Only the Jets in Week 3 have gotten a lower projection and they wound up on the business end of a shutout.
The Texans looked like they had a competent offense withTyrod Taylor. Injury replacementDavis Mills managed to stay out of the turnover column but his 151 net yards on 28 attempts wont cut it going forward. OnlyBrandin Cooks managed to stay relevant for fantasy and prop over players.
Still, the surprising Panthers D was a tough assignment. Perhaps better things lie ahead.
The most surprising and notable inclusion here: the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hope existed in some corners that a retooled offensive line could give Ben Roethlisberger enough time to distribute the ball to a talented group of receivers, not to mention newly drafted talentsRB Najee Harris andTE Pat Freiermuth.
Instead, Roethlisberger has looked like a bottom-five starter so far. He has put up a putrid 35.7 QBR with 5.55 net yards per attempt. Poorly regarded Bengals and Raiders defenses put the clamps on him with ease the past two weeks. If his true talent level has really plummeted like this, the Steelers should probably start taking a hard look at the free agency and trade markets.
Did you have to do a double-take when looking toward the top of that board? Yes, thats the Bengals with one of the highest implied team totals.
Of course, facing the Jaguars provides quite the boost to ones offense. The Jags actually had an interesting day defensively against Arizona in Week 3 as they forced five punts. But it mostly came from shutting down the Cards rushing offense, including Kyler Murrayscrambles.
Joe Burrow will attack through the air as long as the coaching staff doesnt get stubborn. The Jags have allowed a horrific nine yards per pass so far.
How can a team that just passed for 1 net yard have an implied total of 23? Thats a difficult question to answer as Bears fans had to walk away incredibly disappointed in the earlyJustin Fields returns. The offense is fighting through a brutal combination of awful line play and an indecisive rookie QB.Myles Garrett and the Browns had a party in tallying 9 sacks.
The coaching staff must make adjustments in a hurry or the Bears will find themselves lower than this in the coming weeks.

Opinion: Urban-rural divide getting wider and damaging the Conservatives – North Shore News
Posted: at 7:05 am
Just as the last two B.C. elections showed, the federal election revealed the deepening divide between urban and rural Canada.
This growing divide spells bad news for centre-right political parties that struggle to connect with younger and more diverse voters whose issues are largely tied to the affordability challenge that comes from living in urban and suburban areas.
Any electoral map shows why: there are more ridings in metro areas than there in the outlying regions.
B.C. has 42 federal ridings and 28 of them are in Metro Vancouver and the Capital Region, with three more right on the edges. In last weeks election, the Conservative Party won just two of the urban ridings and three more that are on the outer edge of Metro Vancouver and extend well into the Interior.
The Conservatives lost two seats in Richmond, one in the Tri-Cities and one in Surrey-Langley. They also saw their vote drop in a number of other urban seats (something that can be partly attributed to the low voter turnout).
The partys elected representation has been pushed to the edge of Metro Vancouver in places like Abbotsford, Mission, Maple Ridge, Chilliwack and White Rock. All other ridings are in the Interior and the North.
The Liberals won all 25 ridings in Greater Toronto, nine out of 10 in Ottawa, 22 of 24 Montreal ridings and all the ridings in Halifax. On Vancouver Island, which used to occasionally elect Conservative or Reform Party MPs, the NDP won all but one of the seven ridings.
The Liberals even won seats in Calgary and Edmonton, and the Conservative share of the popular vote in Alberta dropped by more than 10 percentage points.
All this spells bad news for the Conservatives and presents a monumental challenge for party leader Erin OToole, or his potential replacement.
Voters in urban and suburban areas care about issues such as child care, transit, housing and other ones tied to affordability. They support laws that restrict guns and have higher vaccination rates against COVID-19 than voters in rural areas.
OTooles campaign stumbled on those two issues the gun registry and mandatory vaccinations near the end of the campaign and they may well have cost his party those four ridings in Metro Vancouver.
The Conservatives now have to pick a lane and stay in it.
Do they veer even more right to appease their supporters on that side of the political spectrum? That would pretty well guarantee a shutout in the riding-rich cities.
Alternatively, do they move towards the political centre (where OToole appeared to be headed at times) to woo urban and suburban voters? That seems like it would be a tough trick to pull off, as the Liberals and NDP have been occupying that turf for a long time.
In any event, the Conservatives have discovered what the BC Liberals discovered in the 2017 and 2020 provincial elections.
In each contest, the BC Liberals (essentially, a center-right coalition party) found themselves increasingly banished from much of Metro Vancouver. Of the 45 ridings in that area (not counting Chilliwack), the NDP won 36 of them in the last election, plus six of the seven ridings in the Capital Region.
That urban-rural divide is real, it is deepening and is bad news one side of the political spectrum in particular.
Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC.

Why should Michael D have to go to service in the North? – Independent.ie

Your leader column on Saturday outlines succinctly a major event in Irelands history that is still reverberating. You correctly state: And so, a century later, we find ourselves once again in heated exchanges over the establishment of Northern Ireland.
his need not be so. It is beside the point whetherMichael D Higginsshouldbe in attendance at the mixed denominational religious service commemorating the establishment and history of Northern Ireland.
It is right, however, that Queen Elizabeth should be in attendance. She is the head of the Church of England. PresidentHiggins is not a religious leader,so why should he participate?
Archbishop Eamon Martin is Catholic Primate of Northern Ireland and Ireland and will be participating in this religious ceremony. That is surely enough Irish representation, North and South.
Perhapsthe powers that bein Romemight consider making the Catholic Primates office in Armagh the head of the Catholic Church for Northern Irelandand create a new office of Catholic Primate for Irelandexcluding Northern Ireland.
Even though 100 years late,it would be a concrete conciliatorygesture of recognition to the people of Northern Ireland and Queen Elizabeth.

SOMETIMES a messianic, neutral third party can bring the most obdurate sides together.
Can we not imagine leaders and former leaders of the DUP and Sinn Fin with the current Irish Government and its British opposite being led by Queen Elizabeth and President Higgins as they all line-dance on Rockall to the charming music of Garth Brooks?
Would that not satisfy all the egos involved?

THE greyhound community is a family community of peoplewho have been meeting on a constant basis, week in, week out, for generations. It is like any club GAA club, golf club, bridge club and so on. Life-long friendships are formed.
There are people who act against the law in any sport, including greyhound racing.
However, people who own greyhounds know that unless your dog is well-cared for,it will not perform.
I am aware there are pros and cons in every debate and we are in a time when misinformation is rife.
If the hobby of greyhound racing is stopped, one would have to ask the question:Whats next?

THE Government is concerned with the huge price increases being levied on gas and electricity.
It is a great pity that, when they were merrily dismantling the ESB and handing the sector over to the market, those predicting that more expensive energy charges would result were ignored.
Here is another prediction:not only will we have to suffer the huge hikes in the cost of energy we use,but we will have to pick up the tab as the Government uses our moneyto save companies and their profits. These days, the ordinary Joe never seems to get a break.

I WENT to two pubs that wanted my name and number just for a drink outside.
One had the list of contacts tracing open and unattended on a table outside. Anyone could have taken a photo of the contents.
I went to a third pub where a lovely lady brought me out a pint and didnt ask me for anything, except money.

WATCH: William Lee Golden and the Goldens’ ‘Come and Dine’ Is a Celebration of Family and Friends [Exclusive Premiere] – Taste of Country
Posted: at 7:05 am
William Lee Golden couldnt take another piece of bad news.
His sons,Rusty, Craig and Chris, were mourning the loss of their mother while the famed Oak Ridge Boys member with the iconic white beard was mourning the loss of his first wife and high school sweetheart. And due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the world was mourning the loss of far, far too many.
Goldenhad to find a way to escape; he had to find a way to heal. So, he headed into the studio with his family.
I had a vision to do this for, like, three years, but I could never get everyone together at the same time, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member explains in an exclusive interview. The pandemic allowed us to get in the studio together, and that was a blessing for many reasons, but partly because I think we all had to find a way to get away from television and get out of the house. It was just too much negative and hate and violence coming from every direction.
Indeed, it was something of a therapeutic exercise for Golden to reminisce on better days by listening to and re-creating the uplifting and inspirational music of the past.
To me and to my family, and to all the guys that were helping us sing and play, it was a chance for us to go in and do something positive and get lifted up," Golden says. "There was a negative situation occurring outside the doors, but it was a negative situation that we had no control over.
One of those uplifting and inspirational songs was the 1917 hymn Come and Dine. Their rendition is premiering exclusively via Taste of Country and The Boot; press play below to listen.
This song took me back to my childhood, and I wanted to take my sons back there with me. It took me back to where I came from, says Golden. "Come and Dine" is the first single to be released from the collection of albums he and his family created together:Old Country Church Gospel, Country Roads: Vintage Country Classics and Southern Accents: Pop & Country Rock, allset for release in early 2022.
Goldenstill remembers those days, growing up with his family on the Alabama/Florida state line, where songs including "Come and Dine" would fill the home.Thats how we spent our time, listening to music and playing music and, of course, singing music, recalls the artist, who recently told his life story in the book Behind the Beard.
When all was said and done, Golden and his sons had recorded a total of 32 songs, 12 of which were old gospel songs and 10 of which were classic country songs.I wanted my kids and grandkids to go back to the songs that touched them, says Golden, who also enlisted his grandchildren Elizabeth, Rebekah and Elijah and friends Aaron McCune, Ben Isaacs and Michael Sykes for the sessions.
Together, we could bring these songs back to life and put our feelings within each and every one of them," Golden continues. "We respect the writers for writing songs that touched us, so it's a way to honor them while healing ourselves in the process.
A music video for"Come and Dine" finds Goldenjoining together with three generations of family and friends for a hearty, home-cooked meal or was it?
Well, to be honest with you, my wife ordered that from Cracker Barrel, and then we put it in our own dishes, Golden admits with a hearty laugh. That's what really happened" and itwas perfectly fine with him.
Weve been all shut down from having family over for a while. We've been shut out of church so we can't get together and sing songs, Golden concludes. But now, we can come together in this moment and have a reason to celebrate.

Android SDK Jitsi Meet Handbook
Posted: at 7:04 am
The Jitsi Meet Android SDK provides the same user experience as the Jitsi Meet app,in a customizable way which you can embed in your apps.
Android 6.0 or higher is required.
If you want to see how easy integrating the Jitsi Meet SDK into a native application is, take a look at thesample applications repository.
Jitsi conveniently provides a pre-build SDK artifacts/binaries in its Maven repository. When you do not require anymodification to the SDK itself or any of its dependencies, it's suggested to use the pre-build SDK. This avoids thecomplexity of building and installing your own SDK artifacts/binaries.
In your project, add the Maven repositoryhttps://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-maven-repository/raw/master/releases and thedependency org.jitsi.react:jitsi-meet-sdk into your build.gradle files.
The repository typically goes into the build.gradle file in the root of your project:
Dependency definitions belong in the individual module build.gradle files:
Show building instructions
Start by making sure that your development environment is set up correctly.
A note on dependencies: Apart from the SDK, Jitsi also publishes a binary Maven artifact for some of the SDK dependencies (that are not otherwise publicly available) to the Jitsi Maven repository. When you're planning to use a SDK that is built from source, you'll likely use a version of the source code that is newer (or at least different) than the version of the source that was used to create the binary SDK artifact. As a consequence, the dependencies that your project will need, might also be different from those that are published in the Jitsi Maven repository. This might lead to build problems, caused by dependencies that are unavailable.
If you want to use a SDK that is built from source, you will likely benefit from composing a local Maven repository that contains these dependencies. The text below describes how you create a repository that includes both the SDK as well as these dependencies. For illustration purposes, we'll define the location of this local Maven repository as /tmp/repo
In source code form, the Android SDK dependencies are locked/pinned by package.json and package-lock.json of the Jitsi Meet project. To obtain the data, execute NPM in the jitsi-meet project directory:
This will pull in the dependencies in either binary format, or in source code format, somewhere under /node_modules/
Third-party React Native modules, which Jitsi Meet SDK for Android depends on, are download by NPM in source codeor binary form. These need to be assembled into Maven artifacts, and then published to your local Maven repository.A script is provided to facilitate this. From the root of the jitsi-meet project repository, run:
This will build and publish the SDK, and all of its dependencies to the specified Maven repository (/tmp/repo) inthis example.
You're now ready to use the artifacts. In your project, add the Maven repository that you used above (/tmp/repo) into your top-level build.gradle file:
You can use your local repository to replace the Jitsi repository (maven { url "https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-maven-repository/raw/master/releases" }) when you published all subprojects. If you didn't do that, you'll have to add both repositories. Make sure your local repository is listed first!
Then, define the dependency org.jitsi.react:jitsi-meet-sdk into the build.gradle file of your module:
Note that there should not be a need to explicitly add the other dependencies, as they will be pulled in as transitivedependencies of jitsi-meet-sdk.
Jitsi Meet SDK is an Android library which embodies the whole Jitsi Meetexperience and makes it reusable by third-party apps.
First, add Java 1.8 compatibility support to your project by adding thefollowing lines into your build.gradle file:
To get started, extends your android.app.Activity fromorg.jitsi.meet.sdk.JitsiMeetActivity:
Alternatively, you can use the org.jitsi.meet.sdk.JitsiMeetView class whichextends android.view.View.
Note that this should only be needed when JitsiMeetActivity cannot be used forsome reason. Extending JitsiMeetView requires manual wiring of the view tothe activity, using a lot of boilerplate code. Using the Activity instead of theView is strongly recommended.
Show example
This class encapsulates a high level API in the form of an Android FragmentActivitywhich displays a single JitsiMeetView. You can pass a URL as a ACTION_VIEWon the Intent when starting it and it will join the conference, and will beautomatically terminated (finish() will be called on the activity) when theconference ends or fails.
The JitsiMeetView class is the core of Jitsi Meet SDK. It's designed todisplay a Jitsi Meet conference (or a welcome page).
Joins the conference specified by the given JitsiMeetConferenceOptions.
Leaves the currently active conference. If the welcome page is enabled it willgo back to it, otherwise a black window will be shown.
Releases all resources associated with this view. This method MUST be calledwhen the Activity holding this view is going to be destroyed, usually in theonDestroy() method.
Returns the JitsiMeetViewListener instance attached to the view.
Sets the given listener (class implementing the JitsiMeetViewListenerinterface) on the view.
This object encapsulates all the options that can be tweaked when joininga conference.
Example:
See the JitsiMeetConferenceOptions implementation for all available options.
This class handles the interaction between JitsiMeetView and its enclosingActivity. Generally this shouldn't be consumed by users, because they'd beusing JitsiMeetActivity instead, which is already completely integrated.
All its methods are static.
Helper method to handle results of auxiliary activities launched by the SDK.Should be called from the activity method of the same name.
Helper method which should be called from the activity's onBackPressed method. If this function returns true, it means the action was handled and thus noextra processing is required; otherwise the app should call the parent'sonBackPressed method.
Helper method which should be called from the activity's onDestroy method.
Helper method which should be called from the activity's onResume or onStopmethod.
Helper method which should be called from the activity's onSstop method.
Helper method for integrating the deep linking functionality. If your app'sactivity is launched in "singleTask" mode this method should be called from theactivity's onNewIntent method.
Helper method to handle permission requests inside the SDK. It should be calledfrom the activity method of the same name.
Helper method for integrating automatic Picture-in-Picture. It should be calledfrom the activity's onUserLeaveHint method.
This is a static method.
JitsiMeetViewListener provides an interface apps can implement to listen tothe state of the Jitsi Meet conference displayed in a JitsiMeetView.
Called when a conference was joined.
The data Map contains a "url" key with the conference URL.
Called when a conference was terminated either by user choice or due to afailure.
The data Map contains an "error" key with the error and a "url" keywith the conference URL. If the conference finished gracefully no errorkey will be present.
Called before a conference is joined.
The data Map contains a "url" key with the conference URL.
The SDK broadcasts several events that the users can listen for.
Please see JitsiMeetActivity, which registers for all the events and can serve as an example.
Broadcasted when a conference was joined. The data HashMap contains a url key with the conference URL.
Broadcasted when the active conference ends, be it because of user choice orbecause of a failure. The data HashMap contains an error key with the error and a url keywith the conference URL. If the conference finished gracefully no errorkey will be present.
Broadcasted before a conference is joined. The data HashMap contains a url key with the conference URL.
Broadcasted when audioMuted state changed. The data HashMap contains a muted key with state of the audioMuted for the localParticipant.
Broadcasted when videoMuted state changed. The data HashMap contains a muted key with state of the videoMuted for the localParticipant.
Broadcasted when a participant has joined the conference. The data HashMap contains information of the participant that has joined.Depending of whether the participant is the local one or not, some of them arepresent/missing.isLocalemailnameparticipantId
Broadcasted when a participant has joined the conference. The data HashMap contains information of the participant that has left.Depending of whether the participant is the local one or not, some of them arepresent/missing.isLocalemailnameparticipantId
Broadcasted when an endpoint text message is received. The data HashMap contains a senderId key with the participantId of the sender and a message key with the content.
Broadcasted when a RETRIEVE_PARTICIPANTS_INFO action is called. The data HashMap contains a participantsInfo key with a list of participants information and a requestId key with the id that was sent in the RETRIEVE_PARTICIPANTS_INFO action.
Broadcasted when a chat text message is received. The data HashMap contains a senderId key with the participantId of the sender, a message key with the content, a isPrivate key with a boolean value and a timestamp key.
Broadcasted when the chat dialog is opened or closed. The data HashMap contains a isOpen key with a boolean value.
The SDK listens for broadcasted actions from the users and reacts accordingly.
The intents can be build manually (as shown above) or through the methods in BroadcastIntentHelper.
Please see JitsiMeetOngoingConferenceService for more examples of sending actions.
Sets the state of the localParticipant audio muted according to the muted parameter.Expects a muted key on the intent extra with a boolean value.
Sets the state of the localParticipant video muted according to the muted parameter.Expects a muted key on the intent extra with a boolean value.
The localParticipant leaves the current conference.Does not expect any extra value.
Sends a messaage via the data channel to one particular participant or to all of them.Expects a to key on the intent extra with the id of the participant to which the messaageis meant and a message key with a string value, the actual content of the message. If the to key is not present or it's value is empty, the message will be sentto all the participants in the conference.
In order to get the participantId, the PARTICIPANT_JOINED event should be listened for, which data includes the id and this should be stored somehow.

Artificial intelligence might eventually write this article – The Verge
Posted: at 7:02 am
I hope my headline is an overstatement, purely for job purposes, but in this weeks Vergecast artificial intelligence episode, we explore the world of large language models and how they might be used to produce AI-generated text in the future. Maybe itll give writers ideas for the next major franchise series, or write full blog posts, or, at the very least, fill up websites with copy thats too arduous for humans to do.
Among the people we speak to is Nick Walton, the cofounder and CEO of Latitude, which makes the game AI Dungeon, which creates a plot in the game around what you put into it. (Thats how Walton ended up in a band of traveling goblins youll just have to listen to understand how that makes sense!) We also chat with Samanyou Garg, founder of Writesonic, a company that offers various writing tools powered by AI. The company can even have AI write a blog post Im shaking! But really.
Anyway, toward the end of the episode, I chat with James Vincent, The Verges AI and machine learning senior reporter, who calms me down and helps me understand what the future of text-generation AI might be. Hes great. Check out the episode above, and make sure you subscribe to the Vergecast feed for one more episode of this AI miniseries, as well as the regular show. See you there!

Artificial intelligence could help to predict the next virus to jump from animals to humans – BBC Science Focus Magazine
Posted: at 7:02 am
Reader Q&A:How do viruses jump from animals to humans?
Every animal species hosts unique viruses that have specifically adapted to infect it. Over time, some of these have jumped to humans these are known as zoonotic viruses.
As our populations grow, we move into wilder areas, which brings us into more frequent contact with animals we dont normally have contact with. Viruses can jump from animals to humans in the same way that they can pass between humans, through close contact with body fluids like mucus, blood, faeces or urine.
Because every virus has evolved to target a particular species, its rare for a virus to be able to jump to another species. When this does happen, its by chance, and it usually requires a large amount of contact with the virus.
Initially, the virus is usually not well-suited to the new host and doesnt spread easily. Over time, however, it can evolve in the new host to produce variants that are better adapted.
When viruses jump to a new host, a process called zoonosis, they often cause more severe disease. This is because viruses and their initial hosts have evolved together, and so the species has had time to build up resistance. A new host species, on the other hand, might not have evolved the ability to tackle the virus. For example, when we come into contact with bats and their viruses, we may develop rabies orEbola virus disease, while the bats themselves are less affected.
Its likely that bats were the original source of three recently emerged coronaviruses: SARS-CoV (2003), MERS-CoV (2012) and SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the2019-20 coronavirus outbreak. All of these jumped from bats to humans via an intermediate animal; in the case of SARS-CoV-2, this may have been pangolins, but more research is needed.

Deepfakes — a dark side of artificial intelligence — will make fiction nearly indistinguishable from truth – MarketWatch
Posted: at 7:02 am
Artificial intelligence will bring enormous benefits to society and the economy by amplifying our own intelligence and creativity as well as giving us a critical tool for overcoming the challenges that lie ahead.
One of the most important dangers is the emergence of deepfakeshigh quality fabrications that be put to a variety of malicious uses with the potential to threaten our security or even undermine the integrity of elections and the democratic process.
In July 2019, the cybersecurity firm Symantec revealed that three unnamed corporations had been bilked out of millions of dollars by criminals using audio deepfakes. In all three cases, the criminals used an AI-generated audio clip of the company CEOs voice to fabricate a phone call ordering financial staff to move money to an illicit bank account.
Because the technology is not yet at the point where it can produce truly high-quality audio, the criminals intentionally inserted background noise (such as traffic) to mask imperfections.
However, the quality of deepfakes is certain to get dramatically better in the coming years, and eventually will likely reach a point where truth is virtually indistinguishable from fiction.
Deepfakes are often powered by an innovation in deep learning known as a generative adversarial network, or GAN. GANs deploy two competing neural networks in a kind of game that relentlessly drives the system to produce ever higher quality simulated media.
For example, a GAN designed to produce fake photographs would include two integrated deep neural networks. The first network, called the generator, produces fabricated images. The second network, which is trained on a dataset consisting of real photographs, is called the discriminator.
This technique produces astonishingly impressive fabricated images. Search the internet for GAN fake faces and youll find numerous examples of high-resolution images that portray nonexistent individuals.
Generative adversarial networks also can be deployed in many positive ways. For example, images created with a GAN might be used to train the deep neural networks used in self-driving cars or to use synthetic non-white faces to train facial recognition systems as a way of overcoming racial bias.
GANs also can provide people who have lost the ability to speak with a computer-generated replacement that sounds like their own voice. The late Stephen Hawking, who lost his voice to the neurodegenerative disease ALS, or Lou Gehrigs disease, famously spoke in a distinctive computer synthesized voice. More recently, ALS patients like the NFL player Tim Shaw have had their natural voices restored by training deep learning systems on recordings made before the illness struck.
However, the potential for malicious use of the technology is inescapable and, as evidence already suggests for many tech-savvy individuals, irresistible.
An especially common deepfake technique enables the digital transfer of one persons face to a real video of another person. According to the startup company Sensity (formerly Deeptrace), which offers tools for detecting deepfakes, there were at least 15,000 deepfake fabrications posted online in 2019, an 84% increase over the prior year. Of these, 96% involved pornographic images or videos in which the face of a celebritynearly always a womanis transplanted onto the body of a pornographic actor.
While celebrities like Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson have been the primary targets, this kind of digital abuse could eventually be used against anyone, especially as the technology advances and the tools for making deepfakes become more available and easier to use.
A sufficiently credible deepfake could quite literally shift the arc of historyand the means to create such fabrications might soon be in the hands of political operatives, foreign governments or just mischievous teenagers.
Beyond videos or sound clips intended to attack or disrupt, there will be endless illicit opportunities for those who simply want to profit. Criminals will be eager to employ the technology for everything from financial and insurance fraud to stock-market manipulation. A video of a corporate CEO making a false statement, or perhaps engaging in erratic behavior, would likely cause the companys stock to plunge.
Deepfakes will also throw a wrench into the legal system. Fabricated media could be entered as evidence, and judges and juries may eventually live in a world where it is difficult, or perhaps impossible, to know whether what they see before their eyes is really true.
To be sure, there are smart people working on solutions. Sensity, for example, markets software that it claims can detect most deepfakes. However, as the technology advances, there will inevitably be an arms racenot unlike the one between those who create new computer viruses and the companies that sell software to protect against themin which malicious actors will likely always have at least a small advantage.
Ian Goodfellow, who invented GANs and has devoted much of his career to studying security issues within machine learning, says he doesnt think we will be able to know if an image is real or fake simply by looking at the pixels. Instead, well eventually have to rely on authentication mechanisms like cybernetic signatures for photos and videos.
Perhaps someday every camera and mobile phone will inject a digital signature into every piece of media it records. One startup company, Truepic, already offers an app that does this. The companys customers include major insurance companies that rely on photographs from their customers to document the value of everything from buildings to jewelry.
Still, Goodfellow thinks that ultimately theres probably not going to be a foolproof technological solution to the deepfake problem. Instead, we will have to navigate within a new and unprecedented reality where what we see and what we hear can always potentially be an illusion.
The upshot is that increased availability and reliance on artificial intelligence will come coupled with systemic security risk. This includes threats to critical infrastructure and systems as well as to the social order, our economy and our democratic institutions.
Security risks are, I would argue, the single most important near-term danger associated with the rise of artificial intelligence. It is critical that we form an effective coalition between government and the commercial sector to develop appropriate regulations and safeguards before critical vulnerabilities are introduced.
Martin Ford is the author of Rule of the Robots; How artificial intelligence will transform everything, from which this is adapted.

Artificial Intelligence in Automotive Claims on Fast Track During Pandemic – Autobody News
Posted: at 7:02 am
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in our daily lives was predicted in Hollywood movies decades ago and began to come true with Siri, Alexa and smartphones.
According to a white paper released recently by Mitchell International, parent company of NAGS, artificial intelligence use in automotive claims is growing fast as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which made a transition to digital essential to decrease the spread of the virus from human to human.
As insurers embrace AI and its ability to improve the claims process, they are devoting a larger portion of their technology budgets to AI-enabled solutions. In fact, according to one report, 87% of carriers are now spending in excess of $5 million annually on these technologies, which is more than in the banking and retail sectors, Mitchell reported.
Although new to the auto insurance industry, the science behind AI has existed for more than 50 years. Conceived in 1956, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized construction of the nations interstate highway system, it is uncertain if AI pioneer John McCarthy imagined a future where AI would drive vehicles down Eisenhowers highway system.
Interest in AI grew until the 1980s when scientists moved from hard-coded algorithms to machine learning: what would make it possible for AI to generate predictions based on data and learned experiences.
By 2012, according to Mitchell, deep-learning algorithms powered Google Street View, Apples Siri and other applications.
With the new wave of deep learning techniques, such as convolutional neural networks, AI has the potential to live up to its promise of mimicking the perception, reasoning, learning and problem solving of the human mind. In this evolution, insurance will shift from...
