Casa Playa, Peyote, Superfrico, and Chickies & Petes reveal their opening dates – Eater Vegas

Posted: September 17, 2021 at 9:17 pm

Get ready for some big restaurant openings this fall in Las Vegas. Even though the calendar changes over to the fall equinox on Wednesday, September 22, the first of a handful of mammoth new restaurants gets ready to open on September 16, bringing coastal Mexican fare to the Strip, followed by elevated American dishes in Downtown Las Vegas and psychedelic Italian-American dishes as a side show to Opium, and a sports bar with Philadelphia roots. Here, new opening dates for four of the nine biggest restaurant openings this fall.

Casa Playa, the coastal Mexican restaurant at Encore Las Vegas, opens on Thursday, September 16. A restaurant with a playful vibe features executive chef Sarah Thompson serving her own menu, while Wynn resort mixologist Mariena Mercer Boarini created the daring cocktails and assistant general manager and agave expert Noah Arenstein curated the robust mezcal and tequila collection. The menu takes its inspiration from the grilled seafood found at hidden playacitas along the Mexican shoreline. Thompson calls her menu a culinary adventure, where she tried to balance creativity with tradition.

Peyote from Ryan Doherty and his company Corner Bar Management plans to open a desert respite with retro charm serving elevated American dishes in the former La Monja space at Fergusons Downtown on Friday, September 24. Doherty describes Peyote as a little dreamy watering hole on top of being a restaurant. Were not going to be doing what we normally do, he says, saying food take precedence over the deejay- and music-driven bars he owns. After the dinner crowds, he says the restaurant converts more of a lounge vibe. A menu of heirloom tomato summer squash tart; mini shrimp toast topped with wild smoked salmon roe; American country ham on toast served with tangy pickled mustard seed, carrot aioli, and wild arugula topped with red eye gravy; and beet tartare comes from Main St. Provisionss Kim Owens and Justin Kingsley Hall.

Spiegelworld, the production company behind Absinthe, Atomic Saloon Show, and Opium, opens Superfrico at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on September 24 with dining and drinks next to the Opium Theatre in the former Rose. Rabbit. Lie. space. Superfrico plans to offer dining all night in a space where anything goes, serving cuisine dubbed Italian American psychedelic. That translates into pizzas, pasta dishes, steaks, seafood, small plates, signature desserts, and late-night finales. Cocktails available as bottled cocktail flasks as well as small batch beverages are sold from Superfricos on-site Bottle-O retail store. The restaurant gets divided into themed bars, lounges, and dining rooms that blend the lines between the show and the restaurant. Performers come and go from their dressing rooms to the Opium Theatre through Superfricos kitchen and dining rooms.

Chickies & Petes Crab House and Sports Bar debuts its first expansion to the western United States on October 6. The Philadelphia-based chain moves into the former Umami Burger space at the Sahara Las Vegas with two bars, fireplaces, room for a DJ, plus a William Hill Sports Book. Diners can expect a self-described elevated bar cuisine menu, featuring chowders, cheesesteaks, a white pie topped with lobster meat, crabs, mussels, and chicken wings. The brands most famous dish, the trademarked crabfries, features a portion of crinkle-cut French fries sprinkled with crab-infused spices and served with creamy white cheese sauce.

5 new inductees Saturday in Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame – Las Vegas Sun

Associated Press

Friday, Sept. 17, 2021 | 1:19 p.m.

RENO A New York columnist who moved to Virginia City in 1950 and restarted the newspaper where Mark Twain wrote a century earlier, the former head of the Nevada Press Association and three reporters whose bylines were fixtures in northern Nevadas largest publication for decades are entering the states Newspaper Hall of Fame.

Lucius Beebee, who died in 1966, Barry Smith, Ray Hagar, Frank X. Mullen and Lenita Powers are to be formally inducted into the hall of fame at the press association and Nevada Press Foundations annual convention and awards banquet Saturday in Reno.

The National Association of Broadcasters has canceled its annual convention that was scheduled next month in Las Vegas over concerns about the delta variant of the coronavirus.

The press association convention, which also was canceled last year due to COVID-19, opens Friday with an informal gathering hosted by the Reno Gazette-Journal at its new headquarters in downtown Reno and closes Saturday with the annual awards banquet.

Hall of Fame inductees will be honored at a Saturday luncheon.

Beebee joined the New York Herald Tribune in 1929 and wrote a syndicated column called This New York, chronicling the citys caf society from the 1930s through 1944 before he and longtime partner Charles Clegg moved to the historic mining town of Virginia City.

They bought the Virginia City News and launched it as the Territorial Enterprise in 1952, restoring the newspaper where Samuel Clemens had written under his famous pen name, Mark Twain. Beebee wrote a column called That Was the West, covering everything from history to literature and gastronomy.

Smith worked at newspapers in Illinois and Colorado before he became the editor in 1996 of the Nevada Appeal in Carson City, where he wrote a weekly column and daily editorials while editing much of the daily copy.

Smith became the executive director of the Nevada Press Association in 2006 and served as the voice of Nevada journalists, arguing in dozens of hearings before the Legislature to improve the states open meeting and public record laws. He retired from the press association in 2018.

Hagar got his first job at age 17 as a sports stringer with the Reno Evening Gazette and Nevada State Journal in 1970, and went on to cover sports and politics in northern Nevada for 50 years. He did stints with The Record-Courier in Gardnerville and Sparks Tribune before returning to the Evening Gazette and State Journal in 1977.

Hagar made national headlines when hot-tempered New York Yankees manager Billy Martin punched him during an interview. Hagar told The Associated Press Martin objected to one of his questions and wanted to see his notes. Hagar refused, holding his notes behind his back as Martin reached around to grab them and then slugged him.

Hagar worked as a sports editor of the El Paso Times from 1987-93 before returning to the Reno Gazette Journal to cover politics. Since 2003, he has served as co-host with Sam Shad on Nevada Newsmakers.

Mullen co-founded the student newspaper at Metropolitan State University of Denver in 1979. He worked at the Columbia Daily Tribune, Rocky Mountain Business Journal and Denver Post before joining the Reno Gazette Journal in 1988, where he spent most of his 25 years pursuing investigative projects.

Mullen taught journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno for more than a dozen years and still lectures at Truckee Meadows Community College. He authored a book about the ill-fated pioneers who resorted to cannibalism when stranded in a Sierra snowstorm, The Donner Party Chronicles: A Day-by-Day Account of a Doomed Wagon Train, 1846-1847. He came out of retirement last year to revive the website of the Reno News & Review.

Powers began her 43-year career with the Reno Gazette Journal in 1972 on what was then called the Womens Page, before reporting on federal and state courts, the Legislature, K-12 and higher education.

Powers later worked as assistant city editor while writing heart-tugging features and a popular column throughout the 1990s, tackling everything from politics to her own family.

Las Vegas Raiders DT Gerald McCoy out for rest of season with knee injury, source says – ESPN

Posted: at 9:17 pm

HENDERSON, Nev. -- Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Gerald McCoy suffered a season-ending left knee injury in Monday night's Week 1 overtime win against the Baltimore Ravens, a source confirmed Wednesday.

Raiders coach Jon Gruden said Tuesday that he feared McCoy had suffered a "long-term" injury, the same day it was revealed that right guard Denzelle Good had suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and was lost for the season.

McCoy and Good were placed on injured reserve Wednesday. The Raiders signed defensive tackle Damion Square and guard Jordan Simmons in corresponding moves.

Square, who was on the Chicago Bears' practice squad, played for Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley with the Chargers. Simmons, who was on the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad, began his career with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2017.

The Raiders also made a move on their practice squad, signing veteran safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and releasing cornerback Madre Harper.

Defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (hamstring) and backup quarterback Marcus Mariota (quad) were also mentioned by Gruden as being injured.

For McCoy, 33, it is the second straight season the six-time Pro Bowler has had his season end early because of injury. He suffered a ruptured right quadriceps in training camp with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 before signing a one-year, $1.25 million free-agent deal with Las Vegas on Aug. 4.

McCoy played nine defensive snaps against the Ravens -- a 33-27 victory -- and went down on a 49-yard pass from Lamar Jackson to Sammy Watkins with 6 minutes, 31 seconds to play in regulation before being carted off the field.

NFL Network was first to report that McCoy was lost for the season.

Marcus Mariota injury will have little impact on the Las Vegas Raiders – Just Blog Baby

Posted: at 9:17 pm

Las Vegas Raiders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota is an injury waiting to happen, and may not be back for quite some time.

Its a brand new football season, which unfortunately means also a brand new Marcus Mariota injury, as the 27-year-old quarterback aggravated his quad and will miss several weeks after injuring himself in his only play on Monday night. Apologies for the pessimistic start to this article, but numbers dont lie, and the injury list for Mariota is a long one:

It is rather unfortunate considering that the play Mariota went down on was a scramble for 31 yards, one of the longest gains for the Raiders the entire night. It had finally seemed that head coach Jon Gruden had found a way to get the dangerous backup quarterback on the field, but it did not last for long.

Mariota was never going to win the starting job in Las Vegas, despite whatever some Raider fans were expecting to believe, but he could be considered one of the most talented backup quarterbacks in the league. Now, this seems to be all speculation, as injuries have doomed him for most of his career.

However, at only 27-years-old, Mariota, if he can stay healthy, should have plenty of football left in him. The former No. 2 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner had an up and down career as a starter for the Tennessee Titans, but most of his issues were not his play, but his availability.

After restructuring his contract this offseason, many around the league felt that Mariota would be traded to compete for a starting job elsewhere, but after spending the majority of the preseason and training camp injured, it seemed the same old story on Mariota had crept up once again.

The injury is annoying for the Silver and Black, but not unexpected. The reason to keep Nathan Peterman now seems even more logical considering that Mariota is out again.

The injury does not change the Raiders plans at all honestly, as Mariota has played very little in his Raiders career, and Nathan Peterman has a strong command of the playbook should anything happen to incumbent starter Derek Carr. Sure, it was rumored that the Raiders planned to get Mariota involved more, but at this point, that is all hearsay.

If Mariota comes back this season, which is more than likely, he will give the Raiders an added dimension of scrambling ability, but if he should not, or find a job elsewhere, the Raiders wouldnt feel the negative ramifications of this.

New Now: a programme of online talks seeks to find answers to the dilemmas of our rapidly-changing world – The Calvert Journal

Posted: at 9:17 pm

How can we learn to comprehend and relate to shifts of our changing contemporary world? Online platform and discussion forum NEW NOW is launching this weekend with a programme of expert bi-monthly talks, with panellists including philosophers, artists, activists, and researchers.

The platforms inaugural event, Neomythologies and the disintegration of reality, will go live on 18 September at 6pm BST. Viewers can join philosophers Federico Campagna and Reza Negasterani, as they talk to Sarah Shin, co-founder of feminist publishing house Silver Press on how revisiting myths can help humanity adapt to climate change and promote gender equality.

Organised by St Petersburgs The Manege Central Exhibition Hall, the platform will stream events online for free in English and Russian. Prior to each talk, the platform will also publish a curated list of suggested readings.

What drives the programme is the absolute uniqueness of the present moment. Humanity as a whole is facing the necessity to analyse its history and where it has led us, curator Anna Kirikova told The Calvert Journal. As American writer William Gibson famously said back in the 1990s: The Future is already here. It is just not evenly distributed. The NEW NOW is one of the means to put the unevenly distributed pieces together, and allow us to accept challenges and risks, get insights into opportunities, and indeed take a better control of our own fate and shared future.

While details on future talks are still to be announced, the programme promises discussions on mental health, environmentalism, transhumanism, and the idea of post-truth.

Crocs Unveils Plans To Achieve Over $5 Billion USD in Sales by 2026 – HYPEBEAST

Posted: at 9:17 pm

Hot off a highly successful earnings season for Crocs, the clog maker has its eyes set on higher goals for the coming years. The cult-favorite has officially revealed plans to hit $5 billion USD in sales by 2026, which translates to a compound annual growth rate of more than 17% starting from 2021.

Crocs CEO Andrew Rees says, Looking forward, we expect the Crocs brand to grow to over $5 billion in sales by 2026. We are confident in our ability to deliver this growth while maintaining industry-leading profitability, creating significant shareholder value, and having a positive impact on our planet and our communities.

In order to reach their 2026 goal, the companys plans are devised to focus on four key areas of growth including, digital sales, increasing market share in the sandals market as well as in Asia and further product and marketing innovation. Back in July, Crocs surpassed Q2 expectations with a reported revenue growth of 93% and quarterly net earnings hitting $319 million USD. Sales from e-commerce and brand-owned retail stores contributed to 52% of Q2 earnings with an increased 78.6% year over year sale. Crocs expects that at least half of its total earnings in 2026 will come from digital sales.

The focus on digital and direct-to-consumer sales began earlier this year when Crocs announced it was ending business relationships with some of its long time wholesaler partners. Crocs is also making big moves into sustainability, committing to achieving net-zero by 2030.

In case you missed it, CGI Transhuman RUBY 9100M is getting futuristic with adidas Consortiums Ozrah.
