Land agency moving back to DC, reversing Trump-era decision – Associated Press
Posted: September 20, 2021 at 8:31 am
WASHINGTON (AP) Interior Secretary Deb Haaland is moving the national headquarters of the Bureau of Land Management back to the nations capital after two years in Colorado, reversing a decision by former President Donald Trumps administration to move the agency closer to the region it serves.
The land management bureau, which oversees nearly one-fifth of the nations public lands, lost nearly 300 employees to retirement or resignation after its headquarters was moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, in 2019. Grand Junction will be rechristened the agencys western headquarters, Haaland said in a news release, and have an important role to play in the bureaus clean energy, outdoor recreation, conservation, and scientific missions.
With control of 245 million acres, the agency has broad influence over energy development and agriculture in the western U.S., managing public lands for uses ranging from fossil fuel extraction, renewable power development and grazing, to recreation and wilderness.
Trumps first interior secretary, Ryan Zinke, initiated the headquarters move west and called it a needed reorganization that put top agency officials closer to the public lands it oversees. The move was completed under David Bernhardt, who succeeded Zinke in 2019.
Critics said the Trump administration intended to gut the agency and pointed to the number of people who refused to transfer to Colorado as evidence of the administrations bid to get rid of career employees. A similar mass exodus occurred after two Agriculture Department research agencies were moved from Washington to Kansas City, Missouri, under Trump.
Haaland, who opposed the BLM move as a congresswoman from New Mexico, visited the Colorado headquarters in July a fter being confirmed as interior secretary.
Top Colorado Democrats, including Gov. Jared Polis and members of the states Congressional delegation, wanted the headquarters to stay in Grand Junction. Democratic U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper said Haalands decision to keep a presence in Grand Junction will help ensure we have a fully functioning agency that understands the West.
To succeed, the western headquarters must be a strong, permanent presence that engages the community and adds a Western perspective and value to the BLMs mission, Hickenlooper said. The Trump administration scattered jobs throughout the region and assigned only a few dozen positions to a shell headquarters in Grand Junction, Hickenlooper added.
Haaland said in her statement that the past several years have been incredibly disruptive to the organization, to our public servants and to their families.
Theres no doubt that the BLM should have a leadership presence in Washington, D.C. like all the other land management agencies to ensure that it has access to the policy, budget and decision-making levers to best carry out its mission, she said. BLMs presence in Colorado and across the West will continue to grow, she added.
Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, the top Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said the bureau does not need two headquarters.
The Biden administrations answer for everything is to double the size of government, Barrasso said. The single headquarters of the Bureau of Land Management belongs in the West, closer to the resources it manages and the people it serves.
What the BLM needs is an honest director who doesnt bring shame to the agency, Barrasso said, referring to President Joe Bidens nominee to lead the bureau, former Democratic aide Tracy Stone-Manning, who received no Republican support in an energy panel vote on her nomination in July. Barrasso and other GOP senators have lambasted Stone-Manning over alleged links to a 1989 environmental sabotage investigation.
Stone-Manning will face a full Senate vote in order to become the new director. It would take every Senate Republican plus at least one Democratic lawmaker to block her confirmation in the evenly divided chamber. Haaland, who would be Stone-Mannings boss, reiterated her full support for the nominee during her Colorado visit.

"Swampy operatives" gave Kevin McCarthy a "MAGA makeover" to attract Trump supporters – Salon
Posted: at 8:31 am
According to extensive reporting by Rolling Stone's Andy Kroll, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) rise as one of Donald Trump's closest congressional allies has been exposed as the end result of a cynical dark money plot to sell the California Republican asa like-minded Trumper to the ex-president's fans.
Calling McCarthy's rise part of an "extreme MAGA makeover," the report relies on documents that showed a cabal of lobbyists and big-money donors backed a media blitz posing as grassroots tea-party populists to boost McCarthy's profile.
McCarthy has been one of Trump's biggest defenders following the Jan 6th insurrection, doing all he can to derail a House investigation into the riot that sent lawmakers fleeing for their lives. For that he has been rewarded by Trump calling him "my Kevin."
However, how McCarthy inserted himself into Trump's inner circle dates back to supporters helping him change his image as one of the GOP's "young gun" inner circle to a lawmaker who rages against what Trump calls the "swamp."
As Kroll writes, "McCarthy's extreme MAGA makeover was an awkward one. Yet he didn't have to do it alone. At a critical moment in McCarthy's ascent, a network of swampy operatives mobilized in his defense and a mysterious dark-money group carpet-bombed the airwaves to position McCarthy as the heir apparent to lead the Trump-era Republican Party."
The report notes, "This slimy story, which is laid out in documents obtained byRolling Stone, reveals how a crew of lobbyists, political consultants, and big-money donors seemingly masqueraded as grassroots tea-party populists in a bid to bolster McCarthy's credibility with Trump supporters. The point of this scheme was to help McCarthy defeat a far-right challenger in an important intra-party election, elevating him to become the House GOP leader and ensuring that a corporate ally remained at the head of the party."
Writing, "Election experts who've reviewed the details of McCarthy's extreme MAGA makeover say it's hard to envision a sequence of events more emblematic of the pathetic state of the campaign-finance system and the way in which anonymous cash now reigns king in American politics," Kroll adds, "In other words, it's not only Trump supporters getting duped by dark money. It's all of us, and it'll continue to happen so long as the untraceable cash continues to flow. The McCarthy blitz shows just how convoluted the money trail can be."
After detailing the media blitz-- heavily steeped in racism -- and the efforts of a shadowy "State Tea Party Express' that was devoted to raising McCarthy's profile, Kroll explained, "In the end, McCarthy's dark-money makeover proved a winning proposition for all the worst people. McCarthy won his leadership race. State Tea Party Express wielded influence without accountability. The actual donors, whoever they are, saw a return on their money in the form of a friendly Republican without even having to be named."

Progressives beware: Don’t let values become casualties of the pandemic – Kansas Reflector
Posted: at 8:30 am
The transition from summer to fall has been a challenging one for those of us with a progressive bent. Many of us feel fed up with the pace of our battle against COVID-19. Many of us blame those who refuse to get vaccinated or take basic safety precautions.
You could watch the frustration seep through in President Joe Bidens speech last week. Commentary on Twitter was immediate: Dad was turning the car around. The commander in chief had had enough.
What makes it incredibly more frustrating is that we have the tools to combat COVID-19, and a distinct minority of Americans supported by a distinct minority of elected officials are keeping us from turning the corner, Biden said.
But he was only the most prominent example of a trend. Good-natured talk show host Jimmy Kimmel suggested that hospitals not treat people who decided against vaccination. Delta Airlines announced it would charge employees who didnt get vaccinated an extra $200 per month on their health insurance. News outlet after news outlet pumped out stories about the hospitalized unvaccinated, struggling to breathe and regretting their choices.
The frustration makes sense. I sympathize with the anger. But during this virus-riddled time, we cant allow the pandemic to melt our minds.
We should not want people who disagree with us even if that disagreement takes the form of refusing a vaccine or mask to forgo health insurance or medical care. We should not want them to suffer, even if we feel the temptation. And we should be exceptionally cautious about translating frustration into policy. Its a short leap from making health insurance more expensive for an anti-vaxxer to making it unaffordable for someone with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure or obesity. Its a short leap from doctors refusing to treat unvaccinated patients to doctors turning away gay, lesbian or transgender patients.
Folks on the right have a history of excluding or denigrating people of different genders, colors, religions or sexual orientations. Extreme supporters of former President Donald Trump have turned that exclusion into a white nationalist cause. This past and present has created an enduring young voter problem for conservatives. No one should be eager to replicate that strategy.
We support progressive causes for a reason: Theyre good for everybody. That means Republicans, Democrats, independents, anti-vaxxers and vaccine scientists alike. (Yes, the wealthy may pay more in taxes, but those funds will go to strengthen the country as a whole.) When we forget the motivations behind greater equality and stronger social programs, we forfeit any moral high ground and might as well hand the keys over to our ideological opponents.
Im not exonerating pro-virus leaders. The political figures I dubbed the disinformation caucus a couple of weeks ago bear heavy responsibility for the mess we find ourselves in. Im not forgiving viral news media outlets that spread science fiction posing as science fact. We should all demand accountability from public figures. But we should not wish harm on anyone.
Kansas desperately needs an expanded Medicaid program. But we are a red state, which means that many of those covered under the program would presumably be conservative. Perhaps theyre socialists or libertarians or luddites. Thats OK! No one in their right mind would propose that only progressives qualify.
Expanding Medicaid helps Kansas precisely because it helps a broad swath of our population. It will help those in rural and urban areas. It will help men and women. It will help our families and friends, hospitals and communities. That help, in turn, strengthens our entire society even the folks who dont use the program.
Remember Ayn Rand.
The objectivist philosopher and author of unreadable doorstops was outspoken in her disdain of government benefits. Yet she used Social Security and Medicare. While its easy to make fun of her for that, the programs were and are meant to help everyone of retirement age. (To make herself feel better, Rand seems to have regarded the benefits as restitution for prior tax payments.)
We do face a truly tough choice. Hospital capacity. If COVID-19 positive patients take up every ICU bed in a facility, what kind of harm does that do to other people including vaccinated people who arent able to access care? An Alabama cardiac patient, for example, was turned away from 43 facilities because they didnt have space. Ray DeMonia later died in a Mississippi hospital more than 200 miles away from his home.
There are no simple answers here. Those running hospitals are making difficult decisions daily. Those refusing vaccines will have to decide if their conscience can handle the burden. But I cant accept that excluding our fellow human beings, regardless of their short-sightedness, is a workable solution. We shouldnt even wish to do so.
The long-term solutions remain the same. Vaccines, masks, testing, distancing and following basic public health advice. Did I mention vaccines already? They are the way out, for progressives and conservatives alike. Because while we shouldnt ration care based on beliefs, the virus wont discriminate either.
Perhaps government-issued mandates will end the pandemic more quickly. I hope so. But in the meantime, we cant allow our frustration to overwhelm our humanity.

50 Years Since The Closure Of The ‘Gold Window’ (Part I) – OpEd – Eurasia Review
Posted: at 8:30 am
What happened and why
This year marked the 50th anniversary of President Nixons decision to unilaterally close thegold window. The impact of this move can hardly be overstated. It triggered a tectonic shift of momentous consequences and it changed not just the global economy and the monetary realities, but it also shaped modern politics and severely affected our society at large.
In July 1944, representatives from 44 nations convened in the resort town of Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, to figure out how the global monetary system should be structured after the end of the war. The US took the clear lead during these talks, exploiting the considerable leverage it had over other countries devastated by WWII or even still occupied by Germany. After all, at that point, Americans were the creditors of the world and had accumulated tons of gold throughout the 1930s and during the war, as the US was widely seen as a safe haven amid the conflict and uncertainty that prevailed at the time.
Thus, theBretton WoodsAgreement was born, under which the U.S. pledged to convert into gold any dollars brought by other countriescentral banks at a rate of $35/oz, while the currencies of the other participating countries were to be convertible into USD at a fixed rate. What this meant in practice, was that the USD became the dominantreserve currency and the fundament of entire financial system of the West, while the gold peg was reduced to amanaged version, through artificial price controls, that was always doomed to fail.
Indeed, the Bretton Woods system didnt last long. It wasnt fully implemented until 1958 and by the mid 60s it was already obvious that its days were numbered. The US gold stockpiles were dwindling as European central banks soon began redeeming their dollar claims, and there were real fears that US gold holdings might eventually be exhausted. Also, the Bretton Woods system, even though it wasmanaged and much weaker form of the classical gold standard, did still at least partially keep government spending and deficits in check, something that Nixon resented, especially with a view to the next election.
And so, on August 15, 1971, President Richard Nixon announced his decision close thegold window, and end the convertibility of USD to gold. He thereby severed the final link between the US currency and any real asset that backed it and gave rise to the new era of totally unrestrained fiat money, that could be manipulated, printed and distributed on the whim of state central planners. In one fell swoop, money lost whatever integrity and reliability it had left and it was turned into a purely political tool, if not a weapon.
In his televised address to the nation and to the world, President Nixon justified his decision by claiming thatprosperity without war requires action on three fronts. We must create more and better jobs; we must stop the rise in the cost of living; we must protect the dollar from the attacks of international money speculators.
As we all know by now, none of these goals were meat. In fact, the result of this unilateral move to extinguish the last vestiges of the gold standard achieved the exact opposite, on all fronts. It unleashed decades of inflationary policies, turbulence in currency markets, and it laid the foundations for an economic and financial system that is dangerously unstable, fragile and fundamentally unjust. All these implications are plain to see today, but the Presidents actions were celebrated by the US establishment of the time. The Dow Jones Average rose the day after the address, while the New York Times unreservedly expressed its support, by writingwe unhesitatingly applaud the boldness with which the President has moved on all economic fronts.
And yet, there were a few voices that spoke out, for common sense and Reason. As the Cato Institute outlined,Milton Friedman wrote in his Newsweek column that the price controlswill end as all previous attempts to freeze prices and wages have ended, from the time of the Roman emperor Diocletian to the present, in utter failure. Ayn Rand gave alecture about the program titledThe Moratorium on Brains and denounced it in her newsletter. Alan Reynolds, now aCato senior fellow, wrote in National Review that wage and price controls weretyranny necessarily selective and discriminatory and unworkable. Murray Rothbard declared in the New York Times that on August 15fascism came to America and that the promise to control prices wasa fraud and ahoax given that it was accompanied by atariff increase.
At the time, many opponents of the truly free market tried to shut down and stifle any and all dissenting views, dismissing all these concerns as hysterical overreactions and alarmist nonsense. That reaction is not unfamiliar to us today. It is lifted from the same playbook that is still in use, and the same strategy is being deployed against anyone who criticizes the grand designs of central planners or warns against the obvious consequences of their reckless policies and short-sighted fixes to long-term economic and monetary problems.

Selling Sunset’s Mary Fitzgerald talks filming secrets and the long-lasting foundation she swears by – Heat
Posted: at 8:30 am
We love a bit of self-care and the last year at home has given us an excuse to look after ourselves inside and out. Each week, we ask the celeb lot to share their self-care Sunday routines, because taking care of yourself is more important than ever.
This week it's all about Selling Sunset's Mary Fitzgerald, the glam LA real estate agent who makes selling million pound houses seem like a doddle. She's hilarious, sassy and extremely loyal to the other girls at The Oppenheim Group.
She tied the knot with French husband Romain Bonnet during the season two finale and even managed to sell a house on the same day. Get a girl who can do both, tbh.
Mary caught up with heat to talk about filming secrets, make-up favourites and the book that changed her life...
We can all agree that Selling Sunset is explosive, glamourous and downright addictive, but what's the tea we don't get to see at home?
Mary laughs, "What happens behind the scenes is probably juicer than what you see on screen because they have to tone it down!"
"There's also a lot of properties, sales and buyers that I'm working with that isn't on the show. You guys see about 10% of what I do, because they want to see the biggest, most glamorous home. So if it's like a $3 million cute home, it's like, 'we have this one over $10,000,000 one here, so we're gonna focus on that one'."
"So, I could close maybe 10 or 15 deals this year, and they'll show one. They just pick what they want and then also, they edit down a lot," she explains. "We film so much, and we have no idea what they're going to actually edit it down to. So there's a lot that goes on that just people don't see."
Ugh, we'd do anything to watch the outtakes. ANYTHING.
Do the Selling Sunset cast have a viewing party? The answer is YES.
"They normally let us watch it a couple of days before it airs because we don't know what happens in scenes when we're not there. They kind of give us a little warning about what's going to come out. Sometimes it's good sometimes it's bad and you're like, 'Oh my god, no, that happened? I'm so mad!' But for the most part, it's just kind of a warning."
"We'll typically throw a party like a little viewing party for all of our friends and family. Then I don't really watch it back other than that, but other than my wedding, I've occasionally gone back and rewatched my wedding. It's a little better than pulling out a wedding album! It's just an emotional moment, so I'd do that twice a year or something."
Who needs a wedding tape when you have Netflix, eh?
"I love a massage or facial. I turn off my phone and watch TV and just kind of try to go brain dead, as my brain just goes and goes and goes all the time. It's really nice just to turn everything off and just chill or just watch a movie. I also get in my infrared hot sauna and I try to use my Babble app and learn French while I'm in there."
Mary always looks imaculate on screen, so we need to know, does she do her own make-up?
"Yeah, pretty much unless we do interviews and then and then they provide hair and makeup for us. But a lot of the girls have their hair makeup done every day. I just don't have time for that."
As for her go-to products?
"My favourite foundation is the Lancme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Long-Lasting Foundation (27.60). It literally stays on forever. It looks so good and it just stays on. If I go get a facial, they're like, 'what do you have on your face? It's really hard to get it off!' which is amazing as we're always running around and it's so warm here and it just does not move. It doesn't look super thick or anything either."
"I like Buxom Lip Gloss (4.99), it's so nice and plumping and Too Faced Better Than Sex (19.20) for mascara!"
"Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I read that years and years ago and it just made a huge impact on me. It's a long book and you have to be very dedicated to read it, but it's a classic and I think it was just very inspirational. It just changed my way of thinking."
"If negativity is coming your way, unless you really did something to deserve it, most of the time it's a projection from the other person because they feel insecure in themselves. It's not about you personally. I try and always remember that and it always helps me to process things better without getting hurt or mad about people doing or saying things."
AMEN.

Mary recently opened up about Chrishell and Jason's new romance and admitted, "I never saw it coming!"
Selling Sunset's Chrishell Stause and Jason Oppenheim confirmed their relationship in an Instagram photo dump captioned "The JLo effect" and we've been obsessed ever since.
"I never saw it coming because obviously she was married and so happy and he's always been a commitment-phobe. She's very serious in relationships, so I didn't even think about that and we're all just good friends," Mary told heat.

There’s a Hole in the Ozone Layer Bigger Than Antarctica, Scientists Sigh – Futurism
Posted: at 8:29 am
Its now larger than 75 percent of the previous years holes.Looming Problem
Whelp, the hole in the ozone layer is as big as ever.
Scientists with the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service announced that the hole in the ozone layer over the South Pole is now larger than Antarctica, according to a press release from the organization. Researchers say that the hole has grown considerably in the past two weeks, and is currently larger than 75 percent of holes in the ozone layer since 1979.
[The hole] seems pretty similar to last years, which also wasnt really exceptional until early September, but then turned into one of the largest and longest-lasting ozone holes in our data record later in the season, said Copernicus director Vincent-Henri Peuch in the press release. Now our forecasts show that this years hole has evolved into a rather larger than usual one.
The ozone layer plays a crucial role in protecting the Earth from the Suns UV radiation, which can harm terrestrial crops and animals. Increased UV light has also been linked to skin cancer and cataracts in humans, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.
However, the layer has been depleted over the years due to chlorine and bromine atoms in the air that destroy ozone molecules. Each year, when temperatures in the South Pole warm during Antarctic spring, these harmful atoms deplete the layer even more causing an annual opening of the ozone layers hole.
While the hole is as big as ever, Copernicus scientists believe that the layer is recovering due to environmental regulations such as the Montreal Protocol, which began regulation of chlorine and bromine chemicals in 1987. However, they estimate the layer wont completely recover until the 2060s or 2070s, reports CNN.
Until then, we imagine that scientists are a mix of on edge and also tired of having to report on the size of the ozone hole. If only our world governments and big corporations that vastly contribute to climate change could do literally anything about it.

"The 919-event allowed us to both announce new important information to the marketplace as well as complete our goal for the day, which was coming together with the FF community to co-create and share ideas and create value together. With the business and product updates we announced at 919, we are extremely confident that we will deliver the FF 91 Futurist on time, with high quality and strong product capability, and within 12 months of closing."
Many FF futurists gathered at FFs headquarters on Sunday to witness the FF 91 being evaluated against numerous ultra-luxury top-brand vehicles. We witnessed the juxtaposition between the pinnacle of future technology and the traditional luxury strongholds, and the new generation of mobility replacing the long-standing automotive culture, said YT Jia, Founder and CPUO of Faraday Future. The results of this comparison showed that the FF 91 is equipped with unbeatable product and technology prowess and is the only product in the world that is one class higher than Model S/X/Plaid both in terms of performance and technology positioning. Our priority is to deliver FF91 to the hands of our global users, disrupt traditional ultra-luxury brands like Maybach, Ferrari and Bentley, and become No.1 in the global ultra-luxury user segment. American poet Moor Mother has proven herself to be one of the country's most unique artists over the past few years. After growing up in Maryland, Moor Mother moved to Philadelphia where she eventually started her poetry and music career. After releasing her debutFetish Bones in 2016, the artist has always been known for experimenting with jazzy and industrial sounds while offering up some incredible poetry that touches on a plethora of topics. In recent years, Moor Mother has shifted from spoken word rap to more traditional flows, and fans are taking notice. This shift is particularly evident on the albumBlack Encyclopedia Of The Air, which can be streamed below.
As you make your way through the tracklist, you will immediately get a true sense of Moor Mother's artistry as each line is deliberate and thought-provoking. The imagery is something to behold and if you naturally gravitate to more poetic forms of hip-hop, then this album is for you.

Atheism Among Muslims is Spreading Like Wildfire – The National Interest
Posted: at 8:29 am
Ex-Muslims are publicly flaunting their rejection of Islam as never before: a steamy tell-all memoir tops the countrys best-seller lists. One video (with 1.5 million views) shows a copy of the Koran ripped into pieces; another video shows a woman in a bikini cooking and eating bacon; and blasphemous cartoons of Muhammad.
Beyond such provocations, ex-Muslims work to change the image of Islam. Wafa Sultan went on Al Jazeera television to excoriate Islam in an exalted Arabic and over thirty million viewers watched the video. Ayaan Hirsi Ali wrote a powerful autobiography about growing up female in Somalia and went on to author high-profile books criticizing Islam. Ibn Warraq wrote or edited a small library of influential books on his former religion, including Why I am Not a Muslim (1995) and Leaving Islam: Apostates Speak Out (2003).
Behind these individuals stand Western-based organizations of ex-Muslims that encourage Muslims to renounce their faith, provide support to those who have already taken this step, and lobby against Islam with the knowledge of insiders and the passion of renegades.
Together, these phenomena point to an unprecedented shift: The historically illegal and unspeakable actions among Muslims of open disbelief in God and rejection of Muhammads mission has spread to the point that it shakes the Islamic faith.
To non-Muslims, this shift tends to be nearly invisible and therefore is dismissed as marginal. When it comes to Arabs, Ahmed Benchemsi notes, Westerners see religiosity as an unquestionable given, almost an ethnic mandate embedded in their DNA. The Islamist surge may have peaked nearly a decade ago but the eminent historian Philip Jenkins confidently states that, By no rational standard can Saudi Arabia, say, be said to be moving in secular directions.
To help rectify this misunderstanding, the following analysis documents the phenomenon of Muslims becoming atheists. The word atheist, along with the organization Ex-Muslims of North America, in this case, refers to Muslims who adopt no positive belief of a deity, including agnostics, pantheists, freethinkers, and humanists. Atheist emphatically does not, however, include Muslims who convert to Christianity or to any other religion.
Two main factors make it difficult to estimate the number of ex-Muslim atheists.
First, some of them prefer to stay within the bounds of Islam to retain a voice in the religions evolution and especially to participate in the fight against Islamism, something they lose on leaving the faith. There is a phenomenon whereby Muslims make a tactical decision not to break with religion completely, presenting themselves as secularists, progressive Muslims or Muslim reformers. They feel more can be achieved by challenging oppressive religious practices than by questioning the existence of God, since they are unlikely to be listened to if they are known to be atheists.
The path of reform, however, is fraught with dangers. The eminent Egyptian authority on Islam, Nasr Abu Zayd, insisted he remained a Muslim while his opponents, perhaps motivated by financial considerations, deemed him an apostate. His foes succeeded in both annulling his marriage and forcing him to flee from Egypt. Worse, the Sudanese government executed the great Islamic thinker Mahmoud Mohammed Taha as an apostate.
Second, overtly declaring oneself an atheist invites punishments that range from ostracizing to beating, to firing, to jailing, to murder. Families see atheists as blots on their honor. Employers see them as untrustworthy. Communities see them as traitors. Governments see them as national security threats. The idea of an individual atheist as a threat seems absurd, but authorities realize that what starts with individual decisions grows into small groups, gathers force, and can culminate in the seizure of power. In the most extreme reaction, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia promulgated anti-terrorist regulations on March 7, 2014, that prohibit Calling for atheist thought in any form, or calling into question the fundamentals of the Islamic religion on which this country is based. In other words, free thinking equates to terrorism.
Indeed, many Muslim-majority countries formally punish apostacy with execution, including Mauritania, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Afghanistan, Malaysia, and Brunei. Formal executions tend to be rare but the threat hangs over apostates. Sometimes, death does follow: Mubarak Bala, was arrested in Nigeria and disappeared for his blasphemous statements. In a case that attracted global attention, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini called on freelancers to murder Salman Rushdie in 1989 for writing The Satanic Verses, a magical-realist novel containing disrespectful scenes about Muhammad. Vigilante violence also occurs; in Pakistan, preachers called on mobs to burn down the houses of apostates.
This external pressure at least partially succeeds, notes Iman Willoughby, a Saudi refugee living in Canada: the Middle East would be significantly more secular if it was not for heavy-handed religious government enforcement or the power mosques are given to monitor communities. Fearful of trouble, more than a few ex-Muslims hide their views and maintain the trappings of believers, making them effectively uncountable.
Nonetheless, Willoughby observes, Atheism is spreading like wildfire in the Middle East. Hasan Suroor, author of Who Killed Liberal Islam? notes that theres a tale we dont usually hear about how Islam is facing a wave of desertion by young Muslims suffering from a crisis of faith . . . abandoned by moderate Muslims, mostly young men and women, ill at ease with growing extremism in their communities. . . . Even deeply conservative countries with strict anti-apostasy regimes like Pakistan, Iran and Sudan have been hit by desertions. That tale, however, is now more public: I know at least six atheists who confirmed that [they are atheists] to me, noted Fahad AlFahad, a marketing consultant and human rights activist in Saudi Arabia, in 2014. Six or seven years ago, I wouldnt even have heard one person say that. Not even a best friend would confess that to me, but the mood has changed and now they feel freer to divulge this dangerous secret.
Whitaker concludes that Arab non-believers are not a new phenomenon but their numbers seem to be growing. Professor Amna Nusayr of al-Azhar University states that four million Egyptians have left Islam. Todd Nettleton finds that, by some estimates, 70 percent of Irans people have rejected Islam.
Turning to survey research, a WIN/Gallup survey in 2012 found that convinced atheists make up 2 percent of the population in Lebanon, Pakistan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan; 4 percent in the West Bank and Gaza; and 5 percent in Saudi Arabia. Revealingly, the same poll found not religious persons aremore numerous: 8 percent in Pakistan, 16 percent in Uzbekistan, 19 percent in Saudi Arabia, 29 percent in the West Bank and Gaza, 33 percent in Lebanon, and 73 percent in Turkey. Conversely, a GAMAAN poll found that just one-third, or 32.2 percent, of born Shiite Muslims in Iran actually identify as such, plus 5 percent as Sunnis and 3.2 percent as Sufis.
The trend is upwards: a Konda survey in Turkey found that atheists tripled from 1 to 3 percent between 2008 and 2018, while non-believers doubled from 1 to 2 percent. Arab Barometer polls show a substantial increase in the number of Arabic-speakers who say they are not religious, from 8 percent in 2012-14 to 13 percent in 2018-19, a 61 percent increase in five years. This trend is even stronger among people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine, among whom the percentage went from 11 to 18 percent. Looking country by country, the largest increases occurred in Tunisia and Libya, with middle-sized ones in Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and Sudan, and almost no change in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, and Iraq. Yemen stands out as the one country to count fewer non-religious persons. It is particularly striking to note that about as many Tunisian youth (47 percent) as Americans (46 percent) call themselves not religious.
Atheism among Muslim-born populations has historically been of minor importance. It appeared especially negligible during the surge of Islamism over the past half-century. As recently as twenty years ago, atheism among Muslims was nearly undetectable. But no longer. Atheism has turned into a significant force with the potential to affect not just the lives of individuals but also societies and even governments.
It enjoys such potency because contemporary Islam, with its repression of heterodox ideas and punishment of anyone who leaves the faith, is singularly vulnerable to challenge. Just as an authoritarian regime is more brittle than a democratic one, Islam, as practiced today, lacks the suppleness to deal with internal critics and rebels. The result is an Islamic future more precarious than its past.

Harvard appoints atheist as head chaplain The Threefold Advocate – Three fold Online
Posted: at 8:29 am
Harvard Universitys newly appointed chaplain, Greg Epstein, claims humanism (looking to individuals rather than a divine figure for moral ideals) to be his guiding doctrine.
According to Emma Goldberg, author of the New York Times article The New Chief Chaplain at Harvard? An Atheist, Epstein became a humanist rabbi around the same time he was hired as Harvards humanism chaplain. He later authored the book Good without God, a humanist guide to living a compassionate life without divine influence.
Harvards transition from its original motto, Truth for Christ and the Church, pains many Christians. Some Christians worry that the new chaplain will be actively leading people away from faith in God.
The main counterargument to this fear is that Epstein is not leading faith services.
Pete Williamson, a member of Harvards chaplain committee, wrote Christianity Todays article Why I Voted for the Atheist President of Harvards Chaplain Group. The article states that Epsteins new position is only to lead chaplain meetings and occasionally represent the Harvard chaplains at conventions. Williamson also tries to assure those worried about Epsteins election by stating that the committees decision to welcome Epstein to the group was unanimous.
However, the fact that Epstein is a chaplain at all causes more worry than his election. In Robert Barrons article for the New York Post Catholic Bishop: Harvard Jumped the Shark with Atheist Chaplain, he writes, If a professed atheist counts as a chaplain which is to say, a leader of religious services in a chapel then religion has quite obviously come to mean nothing at all.
From Barrons statement, then, Harvard has elected someone who believes in no god to a position that is all about leading people closer to God.
Harvard did not respond to Barrons jabs. Had the university responded, it probably would have cited The Harvard Crimsons Religiosity infographic (found in Chhokra Shubhanker and Pradeep Niroulas article Beliefs and Lifestyle). The infographic states that roughly 35% of the incoming class of 2020 claimed to not be religious at all.
Because of this demographic, Epstein serves an atypical purpose as a chaplain. He seeks ways to give a religiously uncertain student body a safe place to question.
