Geology Club to resume meetings on Thursday – Hot Springs Sentinel

The Hot Springs Geology Club will resume its program meetings for local members or anyone interested in attending at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, 200 Whittington Ave.

The program speaker will be a fellow club member, retired Arkansas Geological Survey geologist J. Michael Howard.

Howard's talk, "without using quantum physics," will describe the basics of fluorescence -- what it is, and why it happens.

"Of the known over 5,500 minerals, at least 443 are known to fluoresce," a news release said.

"Also, there are a few minerals, some glasses and some common objects, like clothing, that fluoresce different colors in either short wave and long wave ultraviolet light. We will explain the differences between short wave and long wave UV. There is also a second type of shortwave UV that has significant commercial uses, which will be discussed Thursday.

"The highlight of the presentation will be the examination of a number of different fluorescent minerals and glass samples, in a darkened room. If you have not seen minerals or glass under a UV lamp, then be prepared to be amazed! After all, where do you think the term fluorescent paint came from?" the release said.

Howard will also bring a few books and reference sources for anyone interested in further reading on the topic.

I sometimes wonder if people will ever stop asking me, "Does CBD actually work?" My guess is probably not, seeing how, like all cannabis compounds, CBD's efficacy is dependent on a) an individual's genetic makeup and predisposition, and b) whether or not the product they've tried actually contains the amount of CBD advertised. In an industry rife with cheap CBD imitators and perpetual cash-grab attempts, encountering a CBD product that works, and really works, feels like a personal victory.

For me, taking Willie's Remedy CBD Coffee and Tea for a spin felt like one of those personal victory moments. The canna-beverage market is still in a relative state of infancy. It seems like only in the last year or so that a few choice beverage brands have become synonymous with potency and reliability.

Willie's Remedy coffee comes in vibrant, brown paper bags with a label that emulates that old-fashioned, "General Store" coffee vibe, with a clear display of CBD content in milligrams (250 milligrams, to be precise) and the signature Willie phrase "Count Your Blessings Daily." Willie's tea bags come in round tins of 16 bags with 200 milligrams CBD per package making for an approximate total of 12.5 milligrams per bag also prominently displayed on the front label.

Celebrity-backed CBD companies are a dime a dozen at this point, and depending on which ones you've tried, your patience may vary already. Maybe I'm just letting my personal taste influence my first impression a little too much here, but I find the presentation of Willie's Remedy not only to be aesthetically appealing but denotes a quality and authenticity that I'd expect from something that bears the Redheaded Stranger's name.

And I'm no coffee expert, but the quality and strength of the smell when I opened my coffee bag far surpassed the aroma of the typical stuff I pick up from Trader Joe's.

According to Willie's Remedy, its coffee is "carefully selected and roasted, then infused with organically grown, full-spectrum hemp oil from independent US farmers." As reported by The Spoon, hemp oil is applied directly to the beans immediately after roasting, which is intended to get a proper distribution of hemp throughout the beans and result in a richer flavor and effect in the final product.

Even in coarse ground form, my Medium Roast Willie's coffee had a vibrant, multidimensional flavor that I noticed immediately. As I mentioned earlier, I'm no coffee expert, but for anyone whose relationship to coffee is primarily utilitarian but not enough to shy away from higher quality, I can't imagine a cup of Willie's Remedy being a let-down. I had hoped that I'd taste the hemp extract so I'd know for sure it was there, but ultimately the effects did a fine job of letting me know without affecting the taste of the coffee.

Happy to report that this cup 'o joe absolutely delivers on its promised "harmony of focus from the caffeine plus calm from the hemp." At first I thought it might've been just a placebo effect, but then I checked with a buddy of mine who happened to have had a cup over at my place as well. We both found that we'd been sufficiently energized and moderately soothed without feeling virtually any of the typical coffee jitters.

For my first cup of Willie's CBD coffee, I held off for a little longer than I usually do after waking up, mostly to make sure I didn't just chug it down by reflex and miss out on a fuller sense of how it made me feel. Most mornings I don't eat much breakfast, and when I do, it's usually to avoid making myself sick with coffee on an empty stomach. Against my better judgment, I forewent breakfast with my first cup of Willie's Remedy but found my stomach felt just fine, even after a second cup.

I also felt my creative juices flowing pretty immediately, and on a sharper level than usual. I had energy, for sure, but I also had focus and creative drive, and I could feel a tangible difference in the way my thoughts coalesced. I don't know what you call an experience like that if not holistic.

Willie's Remedy CBD tea is comparable in effect, as well as contrasting in flavor and overall experience, to Willie's coffee. If there's a place in your morning or daytime routine for tea, both the peppermint and chamomile teas offer an enriching sensory experience that can add vibrant dimensions to your day.

The same can be said for Willie's chamomile tea, only with less immediate invigoration that comes with the peppermint. Though still enlivening in terms of focus and creativity, the chamomile put me on an even-keeled register that helped me stay calm and collected throughout the day.

As a connoisseur who's sampled plenty of CBD products some good, some bad, and many that are just ok I was blown away by the overwhelming sense of cool, collected calm with a moderate boost of energy that both these teas provided. Assuming the CBD is distributed evenly, there were about 12.5 milligrams of CBD per tea bag not a heavy amount but not necessarily a lightweight 5-milligram deal either. They set a tone, mood, and flavor to my mornings that couldn't have been more conducive for completing daily tasks as well as stopping to enjoy the vibes of my surroundings.

For lifelong stoners, the impulse to turn every cannabis product into a hyper-capitalist productivity booster in the age of legalization and mainstream acceptance can be a bit of a downer. However, in the case of Willie's Remedy coffee and tea, there's a legitimate opportunity to curb anxiety, stress, and caffeine jitters while infusing the experience with just enough tranquility to effectively help one find peace through times when "getting shit done" is a necessity.

Recommendation: You might think this is obvious, but chances are you've stubbed your toe recently, or stepped on a Lego, or worse: Keeping your walkways clear from things you could trip over are a good way to reduce your risk.

If you want to live a longer, healthier life, eat more fruits and vegetables. The CDC recommends 2 cups of fruit per day and 3 cups of vegetables for adults for a healthy diet because they are rich in nutrition, low in calories, and much better for you than a candy bar. According to a study of English adults over nearly eight years, those who ate the most fruits and vegetables had a "robust reduction" in risk for cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Recommendation: Don't let a target stop you from eating your greens. Any amount is good for you.

Even if you're not up for doing an Ironman, any amount of exercise you do could extend your life. A study by the University of Pennsylvania found that even just ten minutes a day of light activity has big health benefits. Doctoral candidate Ezra Fishman, the author of the study, says you don't even have to work up a sweat to reap the benefits. "The folks who were walking around, washing the dishes, sweeping the floor tended to live longer than the people who were sitting at a desk."

Recommendation: "Get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activitysuch as brisk walking, swimming or mowing the lawnor 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activitysuch as running or aerobic dancing. You can also do a combination of moderate and vigorous activity," advises the Mayo Clinic.

A study in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that people who are on a team have a health advantage over those who exercise solo. Researchers found a clear link between longer life expectancy and team sports that encourage friendships and social interactions, concluding "Interestingly, the leisure-time sports that inherently involve more social interaction were associated with the best longevity."

Recommendation: You don't have to be on the same team. Playing social sports like golf, tennis, or soccer could add years to your life.

Here's something to buzz aboutthat cup of coffee you drink in the morning could boost your longevity. A study found that people who drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee every day have a 15% lower risk of early death compared to those who do not. There is also some evidence that coffee can reduce risk of stroke and Type 2 diabetes. But there can be too much of a good thing. Consuming more than 400 mg of caffeine can make you feel uneasy and keep you awake at night. So, if you're into decaf, you're in luckresearchers found similar benefits in decaffeinated coffee.

Recommendation: Sweeten your coffee with a touch of agave, not spoonfuls of sugar. And avoid anything that starts with "frap." That's not coffee. It's dessert.

Watching your favorite TV show could be taking years off your life. A study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that every hour spent watching television shortened life expectancy by 22 minutesthe same effect of smoking two cigarettes. And watching six hours of TV per day cuts your life expectancy by five years. A Harvard study linked watching just two hours of TV per day to a 20% greater risk of Type 2 diabetes and 15% increase in risk of heart disease.

Recommendation: We don't expect you to stop watching Succession. But do be aware of your screen time. TV not only shortens your life, but can prevent you from living life to its fullest.

Add a little flavor to your diet to boost your health. Turmeric is a plant related to ginger and a common ingredient in curry powder. Rutgers University scientists found that combining turmeric with phenethyl isothiocyanate (a compound found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli) can help fight prostate cancer.

Recommendation: Sprinkling turmeric on your veggies even once a week could give you some protection. And the capsaicin in chili peppers leads to weight loss, too.

Getting behind the wheel when you're exhausted might seem like it's not a big deal"we all do it," you might thinkbut it can be deadly. According to the National Sleep Foundation, drowsy driving is downright dangerousit can have a similar effect on your body as drinking alcohol. Being awake for 18 hours makes is like having a blood alcohol level of .05 (the legal limit is .08). It will be hard to pay attention and slow your reaction time.

Recommendation: If you're tired, pull over somewhere safe and take a quick nap or ask someone else to drive. There is less shame in being late than there is seriously hurting yourself or others.

Going for a swim is a great way to relieve stress and get some exercise. But before you dive in, be sure you have a buddy. According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death worldwide. Men have twice the risk of drowning than women do, in part because men tend to be riskier when swimming (using alcohol and going alone).

Laughter really is the best medicine. Not only does it reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve your feelings of well-being, laughing can also dull pain. According to a study in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, women with a sense of humor were found to live longer despite being ill. In fact, the findings show that high scores in cognitive sense of humor are linked to a 73% lower risk of death from heart disease, and an 83% decrease in risk of death from infection.

According to research, being unemployed can boost a person's risk of early death by a whopping 63 percent. This risk is exacerbated for older adults who lose jobs during a recessionthey may lose up to three years of life expectancy. Studies found a potential link between stress and increased likelihood of cardiovascular disease, alcohol use, and other health problems.

We spend most of our waking hours at work, so it should come as no surprise that our co-workers have an impact on our health. A study by Tel Aviv University that examined people in professions from manufacturing to finance revealed that risk of death is correlated to the "perceived niceness" co-workers. Those who reported having "little peer support" had 2.4 times greater risk of dying during the study. Whether or not the boss was nice had little impact on lifespan.

It's no secret that being generous makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But it may also help you live longer. According to research, spending money for the benefit of others has a profound impact on emotional well-being. Doing good things for others pays an even higher dividendthose who cared for neighbors live the longest.

Getting your yearly checkup is vitalbut may people put off a doctor visit because they don't want to hear bad news, or they just can't afford it. According to one study, life expectancy decreases by nearly 2 years for each chronic condition a person hasand it does not vary across sex or race.

Recommendation: Almost all insurances cover a yearly physical. If you're not going, you're wasting free money, and putting yourself in danger. See you there.

It's worth it to go to school. The odds of dying for women with the lowest education levels is 66% higher than for their more educated counterparts, according to a Harvard study. Higher education is associated with less financial stress, fewer traumatic events like divorce or assault, and better odds of having health insurance and owning a home.

The amount of time you spend sitting can shave years off your life. A study published in the Journal of American Medicine found that sitting for more than 11 hours a day actually increases your risk of death over the next three years.

Recommendation: Maybe it's time to look into getting a stand-up desk. Or simply stand up from your desk and walk around every 30 minutes.

Tobacco is still the leading cause of death in the United States. The CDC says mortality among both men and women is three times higher than those who have never smoked. For every pack of cigarettes you smoke, you take 28 minutes off your life. The average smoker loses 25 years of life expectancy. "Vaping" is likely no better, although E-cigs are so new there's no research yet. E-cigs have been known to cause abdominal pain, seizures, coma, cancer and death.

Grants to support racial justice initiatives in communities of color across the country

NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- This morning, Change.org and New York-based community foundation, North Star Fund, announced more than 35 Black-led organizations across the United States that will receive grant funding from Change.org's $5.5 million Racial Justice Fund. The Fund was created to redistribute money that came to Change.org connected to the Justice for George Floyd and Justice for Breonna Taylor petitions. The grant recipients work on the frontlines of Racial Justice to disrupt anti-black racism and empower communities of color.

With the guidance of North Star Fund, each grant recipient was carefully chosen through an intentional approach that sought to responsibly resource Black-led organizations and movements. The five-week process took a unique approach to corporate philanthropy by developing an inclusive selection committee of Change.org staff members, petition starters, and a representative of North Star Fund to learn about equitable grantmaking and identify a cohort of recipients.

"Creating a system that intentionally sought out organizations that were on the frontlines of this work was crucial in our grantmaking process," said Jennifer Ching, Executive Director for North Star Fund. "We hope that our partnership with Change.org inspires other major corporations to be more conscious about creating equitable philanthropic practices that directly benefit a greater number of Black-led movements fighting for transformative change."

According to statistics, a majority of philanthropic dollars go to causes that exclude Black, Indigeneous or People of Color communities issues like Racial Justice.

Letter: When are we going to address community’s core issues? – Mountain Xpress

There is so much finger-pointing and anger among everyday people and communities as the pandemic continues. On both sides, it has become an extremely polarizing issue, which has drawn us apart from one another. I have begun to wonder if the conversation will be had about root causes of the pandemic and, more so, the severity of it in our country.

It is easy to blame politicians for their shortcomings, but when are we going to address the fact that our private, for-profit hospitals have been intentionally under- and defunded to cut costs in the name of enriching hospital CEOs? When are we going to talk about the fact that the animal feedlots, where many of our meals come from, are the ideal breeding ground for the next pandemic? When are we going to air our frustrations that not only politically, but socially, we were unprepared for and uneducated about the reality that a pandemic like this was not only predictable, but imminent?

What are we going to do to make sure that we arent in the same situation when this inevitably happens again as a function of our intentional dispossession of functioning community dynamics, an intentionally broken food and health system, and a growing world with increasing chronic disease and wealth disparity? Are we going to finger-point at one another about masks and vaccines and blame local politicians about their policies we agree with or disagree with, or are we going to look at these harsh core issues in the face and address them with the severity and intensity that they merit?

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) -- The Northeast Iowa Food Bank celebrated their past 40 years of service to the area and set the stage for the next 40 years by unveiling their new logo and brand identity on Friday.

The NEIFB will be celebrating 40 years of service to the area in December. The Food Bank has grown over the years thanks to the communitys commitment, partnership and vision. A vision, where no one should go hungry in northeast Iowa. People from communities all across the area have invested in that mission with their time, money, influence, and advocacy.

The new logo consists of:

University Of Alaska Anchorage: Honoring UAA’s Diverse Communities Kicks Off With Latinx Heritage Month – Patch.com

With fall semester in full swing, it's time to start celebrating! From Sept. 15 toOct. 15, UAA is honoring the diverse culture, people and places of Latin America withLatinx Heritage Month.

This year's event is a mix of in-person and virtual events, kicking off with a takeoverof Student Life and Leadership's Instagram page, followed by educational opportunities and lectures, trivia, a screening and discussionof In the Heights, and of course, food.

The event is being organized by the YouAA Committee, headed by Cuckoo Gupta, student activities civic engagement and diversity coordinatorin UAA's Student Life and Leadership Office.

Fairly new to Alaska and UAA, Gupta said the YouAA Committee is also a relativelynew university organization that focuses on the history and heritage months; the universitycelebrates each year, invites the campus community together to offer unique perspectiveson how to honor a group's heritage and culture during their respective celebrationmonths.

"The idea is that YouAA is a one-stop-shop for our faculty, staff and students tocome together and celebrate the you in UAA," said Gupta. "And to include the uniqueperspective that our campus community members bring as a part of their identity, culturalheritage and how we can celebrate that uniqueness through our programming."

In addition to harnessing the power of the community to plan programming for thisevent and following heritage months this fall and winter, the committee also re-consideredlast year's name of Hispanic Heritage Month and opted for the more inclusive LatinxHeritage Month. Gupta said the committee felt Latinx covered the broader Latino identifyingcommunity, including LGBTQ2+ and the Indigenous peoples of Latin America.

"We did a lot of research on what other universities in the Lower 48 are doing," saidGupta of the name change. Additionally, the YouAA Committee also reached out to theLatinx Anchorage community to get their input on the name change. "We also did thislast year with Women's History Month, with the added 'X' in women our goal at theend of the day is to be equitable and inclusive."

Jennifer Booz, UAA's chief diversity officer, said this has been an important topicrecently. In addition to her participation on the committee, she is creating educationalmaterials to inspire critical discussions on terminology shifts that the Hispanicand Latino communities are currently facing.

"We will be having discussions at some of these dialogue events, what the trend isand why some groups in the community are claiming some terms and others are claimingsomething different," said Booz. "There are difficult conversations to have, and weneed to get comfortable with being uncomfortable sometimes. But it's a learning processand experience for students and all of us."

In addition to lectures and critical dialogue discussions, there are also more lightheartedevents for students, staff and faculty to enjoy, like a trivia night, an opportunityfor students to win a free meal from local restaurant Xalos and an artist lectureand workshop with George Rodriguez.

Gupta said she is excited about the upcoming event and is looking forward to a mixof both in-person and online events. She said if there are any students, faculty orstaff interested in helping to plan subsequent events, that the YouAA Committee iswelcoming new members. She said members can be involved with as much or as littleplanning as they want or only volunteer for a particular month or event.

"Something that I really like about the committee is that it's intentional," saidGupta. "We celebrate our community's diversity, heritage and cultural identities,but the YouAA Committee makes it more intentional."
