Theres a new tabletop miniatures game set before the timeline of Cyberpunk 2077 – Polygon
Posted: May 11, 2021 at 10:55 pm
Cyberpunk 2077 has proved controversial for a number of reasons, not the least of which was its buggy launch on consoles. But the tabletop franchise that it was based on is experiencing an incredible renaissance. Cyberpunk Red, the latest version of the game from publisher R. Talsorian Games, is one of the most elegant and accessible TTRPGs of the generation. Now, a new studio is taking that dark future world in a different direction with a new miniatures skirmish game titled Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone.
The game is currently being funded through Kickstarter, and the company behind it was founded by John Kovaleski, a 20-year veteran of the tabletop games industry.
Kovaleski created publisher Gale Force Nine in 1998, building on a foundation of laser-cut gaming accessories. In the 2000s he and game designer Aaron Dill, along with the late Sean Sweigart, shifted to board games. Their first big hit was Spartacus: A Game of Blood and Treachery. It was an unusual hybrid, blending turn-based strategy with a high-stakes tactical miniatures game, all built on the lore of the Starz networks prestige television series, Spartacus. The game was so good that even those who had no interest in Lucy Lawless on-screen hijinks were drawn to it. Its success led to a string of high quality licensed board games such as Firefly: The Game, Sons of Anarchy, Star Trek Ascendancy, and Homeland.
Kovaleski told Polygon that his passion has always been in miniatures, and thats where the idea for his new company came from. After selling Gale Force Nine to Battlefront Miniatures, he and Dill created a new company, Monster Fight Club, and producing Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone has always been at its goal.
Combat Zone is set in 2045. Thats the same era as Cyberpunk Red, making it a prequel to CD Projekt Reds video game. The action takes place in the aforementioned Combat Zones in and around Night City, a fictional West Coast metropolis located between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Imagine the most run-down urban areas of the rust belt overrun with heavily-armed gangs and youve got the right idea.
Miniatures skirmish games, like Games Workshops Necromunda or Corvus Bellis Infinity, rely on some notoriously dense rulesets. While you dont need more than a handful of miniatures to play, you will often spend hours at the table trying to sort out how to move and fire on your opponents. Combat Zone reduces the complexity considerably.
Central to its mechanics are a set of color-coded dice and a matching ruler, called the Limiter. It has green, yellow, and red sections to denote short, medium, and long range. Its the only measurement tool that you need to run the game, and it also informs all the actions you might take during your turn.
Each character in play is represented by a card, and those cards denote how many and what types of actions each character can take on a players turn. There might be a green and a yellow action, or two greens and a red. Players can use those actions either to move a short move is green, a medium move is yellow, and so on and they can use those actions to fire their weapons and make melee attacks. The card also notes what modifiers to add once you roll the dice. The result, said designer Dill, is a game with a much more fluid and obvious turn structure. Matches average around 45 minutes.
Of course, just as in the real world, gunfights in Combat Zone are incredibly dangerous. Wounded characters are less effective, and the quality and number of their actions is depleted the more damage that they take. Red actions turn into yellow, yellow into green, and so on, until they ultimately go out of action. But taking some wounds doesnt mean your characters are any less deadly. In this game it doesnt matter if youre rolling a d6 or a d20. If your dice land on the highest possible number, your target is in trouble.
You can pull these really cool heroic things out of combat, Kovaleski said, where I am bloodied, Im on the street, I am crawling. You come up to headshot me and Holy crap! I pulled it out. Im not dead. Thats pretty neat.
The base game runs $120 on Kickstarter, with a delivery set for April 2022. Included are 12 plastic miniatures, nearly 200 cards, a double-sided game board, and a full suite of scenery. The terrain is an especially nice touch, and comes with a plastic shipping container with a door that opens, several barricades, and a ruined two-story building made out of heavy game board material. Add in all the tokens and dice you need to get started, and eight pre-made scenarios, and theres a lot on offer here.
As is typical of modern crowdfunding campaigns, theres also a number of add-ons being offered. The biggest draw are the additional gangs. The base game comes with six Tyger Claws and six Maelstrom figures, which fans of Cyberpunk 2077 will likely recognize from the video game. Additional sets include Combat Zoners (a rag-tag criminal faction), the Lawmen (including a figure modeled after Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith), the Bozos (a group of futuristic clowns), and Generation Red (child soldiers). Pledges of $200 or more also get access to 21 additional unique characters, and the cards needed to run them at the table.
Unlike many other modern crowdfunding campaigns, Monster Fight Clubs Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone feels like the start of something big. This isnt a one-time offer for a high-concept product thats going to disappear, never to be produced again. Its something that Kovaleski and Dill plan to have in friendly local game stores around the world for years to come.
The bedrock for which our company was built is Cyberpunk, Kovaleski said. That is a big cornerstone for us. This is not a Kickstarter where were trying to make a game and get it out and then were gonna move on to the next thing. This is our Warhammer 40,000, and were going to run with it. I have no intention of stopping anytime soon.
The Kickstarter campaign runs now through May 13. Expect post-campaign pledges to be available on Gamefound.

One-Fourth Of Cyberpunk 2077 Players Have Reached Max Street Cred Level – GameSpot
Posted: at 10:55 pm
Roughly a quarter of Cyberpunk 2077 players have maxed out their street cred level, according to developer CD Projekt Red, meaning they had to play the game for a very long time. While the figure may seem low in itself, it actually shows a notably high level of engagement with the game's array of content when compared to how many players typically finish games, and considering the vast amount of content in Cyberpunk 2077.
CDPR announced the stat through a tweet, giving the exact figure of 23.5%. While you can gain street cred by playing the main story, the bulk of street cred is gained by taking on sidequests like gigs and taking down Wanted enemies.
By comparison, most people who start a game never finish it. Public sharing of stats like Trophies and Achievements have consistently shown very low levels of game completion. As noted in a Reddit thread, some very popular games only reach 20-50% completion rates on Steam, so 1/4 of Cyberpunk players maxing their street cred suggests those who do play the game are plumbing it thoroughly. Keep in mind this stat is being provided directly from CDPR, so it may have weeded out players who only dipped a toe in Cyberpunk and then bounced off--a group that tends to drive down completion stats for many games.
Cyberpunk 2077 had a troubled launch, with complaints of bugs that led the developer to offer refunds and the game ultimately being pulled from the PlayStation Store. CDPR hasn't given up on the game, saying it hopes that continued support will help it sell for years to come. The studio posted a massive profit in 2020, and a comparatively tiny number of players requested refunds.
Going forward, the studio's plans for multiplayer are unclear. CDPR has been continuing to issue patches and a dataminer recently uncovered evidence of new quests.

Tattoo Punk will bring cyberpunk tattooing to Switch and PC – Nintendo Enthusiast
Posted: at 10:55 pm
Its Mothers Day, but if you dont want to pull the trigger on getting a MOM tattoo, maybe you can wishlist Tattoo Punk from developer Cyber Rain Games and publishers No Gravity Games and VARSAV Game Studios instead. Tattoo Punk is a cyberpunk tattoo artist experience headed to Nintendo Switch and PC, and its release date will be announced soon. Other platforms are still being considered, and the game will support English and Polish languages at launch.
The premise is that it is the year 2100, and Henry is living in the latest stage of capitalism where corporations are ruining everything and body modification is all the rage for some reason. Henrys wife died, and he is tattooing to pay the bills and keep his son fed. So in Tattoo Punk, you will customize your studio, design various cool tattoos, haggle over prices, build loyal clinetele, and even take charge of advertising your parlor. This is very much a simulator game, albeit with a futuristic slant, much like SuchArt: Genius Artist Simulator.
If for some reason you played Cyberpunk 2077 and your favorite aspect was the character design, then Tattoo Punk might be up your alley when it launches on Switch and PC presumably later this year.

Review: Reelin’ In The Years In TIME BEFORE TIME #1 – Monkeys Fighting Robots
Posted: at 10:55 pm
- Advertisement -GET YOUR COPY OF MFR: THE MAGAZINE #3
Written by Declan Shalvey (Bog Bodies, Injection) and Rory McConville, with art from Joe Palmer, Time Before Time #1 is an engaging and wholly entertaining opening chapter to this ruined future time travel comic series. With colors by Chris OHalloran and letters from Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, this comic displys its influences openly to the point where it starts to feel pretty unoriginal, but its held together by sharp writing and pacing and fitting visual work.
The year is 2140, and to escape a world with no future, many turn to the Syndicate, a criminal organization who, for the right price, will smuggle you back in time to a better life. After working for the Syndicate for years, Tatsuo and Oscar decide to steal one of their bosss time machinesbut soon find that the one thing you cant run from is your past.
Every story you read in our time is going to have its influences, whether they be subtle or blatantly obvious. What matters is how these influences are used in the creation of a new tale. Declan Shalvey and Rory McConville succeed in opening up a science fiction world with a great premise sending people back in time to escape the calamity that we have made our planet and creating a simple yet effective motivation for the protagonist to also get the hell out of Dodge. However, if you know what this story pulls much of its influence from, it can be a little distracting. See, this comics plot borrows, whether accidentally or unintentionally, alot of its concepts from Rian Johnsons 2012 sci-fi filmLooper(which is brilliant on its own). Granted, Shalvey and McConville have given the idea of time travel as this crime syndicate-led underground act and spun it in a slightly different direction than Johnsons movie, but theres still so much similarity that I couldnt help but see it with every turn of the page. Again, this could be totally unintentional as there are so many very similar genre stories that accidentally borrow from one another all the time (I mean the lead characters name is Tatsuo, soLooper wasnt the only story on my mind). If youve seen Looperthough, be warned that theres a good chance that it going to dominate your thoughts while reading this comic. Everything else about this script is honestly solid. While we dont get to spend a *ton* of time with a couple more important supporting cast members, theres still enough detail from the story to paint a picture of the interpersonal relationships amongst these people and the protagonist, which created an emotionally effective twist early on in the issue. The dialogue is sharp, with some clever twinges of humor sprinkled throughout. Despite its overbearing similarity with one other piece of recent science fiction, this is a thoroughly well-written comic.
The bleak ruined future of Time Before Time #1 is brought to life by the pencils of Joe Palmer, with colors by Chris OHalloran, and its a look that well suits this story. Palmers thick lines and heavy inks darken a bleak Earth with the exact sort of atmospheric aesthetic youd expect from a cyberpunk-esque comic. The architecture of the run down apartment structures and syndicate-owned warehouses is excellently well constructed in its dilapidation, with crumbling concrete and cracked sidewalks marking much of the scenery. The character animations and details are outstanding, with thin lines marking stress and age in characters as well as making obvious emotional reactions. Every character has a different design making them easy to tell apart. The colors from OHalloran are spot-on for this comic as well, with dreary ashen greys marking the outside world on the future, dotted by faded neon in nightclubs and via streetlights to make this comic feel like a true cyberpunk experience. Otsmane-Elhaous letters use a familiar and safe font that is highly dynamic, changing effortlessly based on characters tone and delivery. From the visual end, this is a tightly put together package that sticks the landing in regards to creating the world this story takes place in.
Time Before Time #1 is the kind of sci-fi story youve probably seen before, but is still delivered in a way that should be refreshing to most readers. Declan Shalvey and Rory McConvilles script is focused and tightly paced, offering considerable amounts of plot and characterization within this issues page length without ever feeling bogged down. The visuals from Joe Palmer and Chris OHalloran are perfectly bleak, rife with detail and appropriate tone for this kind of ruined cyberpunk future. Be sure to pick up this debut issue when it hits shelves on 5/12!

‘Runner Runner’ review: Is this the casino movie of your dreams? Film Daily – Film Daily
Posted: at 10:55 pm
Theres some movies that you just wonder how they get made the minute you look at them. For example, Runner Runner has an all-star cast of Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck, Anthony Mackie, and Gemma Arterton. Directed by The Lincoln Lawyers Brad Furman, it seems like this film should be a five-star hit.
But the reality is good performances cannot help this disaster of a script. The movie is literally so bad youll be wishing you could get started running your own online casino site instead of having to spend anymore time watching the film.
The reality of online casinos is actually quite normal. Casinos are certified to operate by local governments, and offer great rewards for those who are willing to play. Plus, theres numerous sites and online casino mags offering trustworthy reviews of online casinos. Its not some crime-ridden, get-rich-quick scheme like Runner Runner makes it out to be.
Runner Runner tricks you into thinking these Ivy League geniuses would be stupid enough to fall for what is a glorified pyramid scheme relating to gambling. As Richie (Justin Timberlake) helps get his friends involved in these online casino review sites, he sees nothing wrong with how hes making money off of his friends honest work. While pyramid schemes are nothing new, this one in particular seems way too obvious.
Then you get towards the end where Richie works directly under Ben Afflecks Ivan Block, and realizes how everything he did was a scam just to help Block with his criminal enterprise. Nothing about Runner Runner even closely resembles the world of online gambling. Sure, this is a nitpick, but it really takes you out of the movie when its too dramatic.
Broke college student gets involved in an underground gambling scheme that turns into a full-blown criminal enterprise as hes investigated by authorities. Sure, that is a really basic description of 21, but the reality is Runner Runner is literally just this plot. There is no further material to it.
Calling Runner Runner a rip off of casino thriller 21 isnt actually that far off. It feels like the writer of Runner Runner watched 21 once, and then decided to take the entire plot except now instead of playing poker, the lead genius just runs gambling sites. The worst part is none of the humor and charm of 21 transferred into the script for Runner Runner.
What makes Runner Runners cast even more bizarre is how it feels like no one wants to be there. Justin Timberlake was in the height of the release of The 20/20 Experience, Ben Affleck was riding the success of Argo into his casting as Batman, and Anthony Mackie was a year away from joining the MCU.
All three of these actors have proven their chops in other productions, so its definitely not that theyre bad at their jobs. Whether it be their lack of interest in the story, or the bland script, Runner Runner really suffers from their performances. If you need any further proof, check out this one scene from the film so you can understand why we hate the acting.
There are so many better movies starring these actors you can watch. There are even more casino thrillers better than Runner Runner that you can spend your time watching instead. You would literally be better off playing at an online casino than wasting your time watching Runner Runner.
If you do want to earn like the hero of the movie on review sites register in affiliate networks like this one. Just dont take any advice from Richie.

Poseida Therapeutics Presents Encouraging Preclinical Data Across its CAR-T and Gene Therapy Programs at the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy…
Posted: at 10:55 pm
SAN DIEGO, May 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Poseida Therapeutics, Inc.(Nasdaq: PSTX), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company utilizing proprietary genetic engineering platform technologies to create cell and gene therapeutics with the capacity to cure, today will give multiple oral and poster presentations at the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy 2021 Virtual Annual Meetingbeing held May 11-14, 2021.
The Company's oral presentation will highlight new data demonstrating the potential of its proprietary piggyBac DNA Delivery System for the treatment of genetic liver disorders in children and infants. Two additional presentations will highlight preclinical data supporting Poseida's first allogeneic CAR-T product candidate, P-BCMA-ALLO1 for R/R multiple myeloma, as well as preclinical data supporting the Company's anti-c-kit CAR-T program as a potentially safer preconditioning regimen for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with AML.
"At Poseida, we are applying our proprietary technology platforms to develop the next wave of cell and gene therapies to not only treat severe cancers but to also unlock the potential of single treatment cures," said Eric Ostertag, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer. "The preclinical data being presented today further validate our CAR-T approach in multiple myeloma and in preconditioning for patients with AML, as well as demonstrate the exciting potential of our liver directed gene therapies, particularly in juvenile patients."
Presentation Highlights:
Oral Presentation: "Preclinical Evaluation of Combined Adeno-Associated Virus and Nanoparticle Delivery of piggyBac Transposon System for Durable Transgene Expression in the Growing Neonatal Murine Liver" Session Date/Time: Tuesday, May 11, 2021, 5:45pm - 6:00pm ETAbstract Number: 30
In a preclinical study, Poseida evaluated concomitant delivery of recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors and novel nanoparticle (NP) vectors using its piggyBac and "Super" piggyBac (SPB) technologies in order to deliver transposon and transposase in a growing neonatal mouse model. Data demonstrated that the piggyBac DNA Delivery System was effective in using both rAAV and NP vectors to introduce edited genes into targeted hepatocyte genomes. Poseida also found that SPB, a hyperactive form of the transposase, produced stable vector integration into the hepatocyte genome for more than three months, compared to transpose alone. Similarly, delivery of a novel NP formulation using SPB produced efficient delivery of mRNA to the liver hepatocytes, with similarly high levels of durability in the transgene expression. Taken together, these preclinical findings suggest the potential of piggyBac and SPB technology for gene therapies that treat congenital liver disease in infants and young children.
Poster Presentation: "P-BCMA-ALL01: A Fully Allogeneic Stem Cell Memory T Cell (TSCM) CAR-T Therapy Targeting BCMA for the Treatment of Multiple Myeloma Shows Potent Anti-Tumor Activity"Session Date/Time: Tuesday, May 11, 2021, 8:00am 10:00am ETAbstract Number: 789
P-BCMA-ALLO1 is Poseida's first fully allogenic product candidate targeting B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA) for the treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. In in vitro and in vivo preclinicalstudies, P-BCMA-ALL01 showed effective, targeted cancer cell killing and cytokine secretion, with similar or superior performance in anti-tumor efficacy compared to an autologous CAR-T therapy. Inclusion of a proprietary "booster molecule" in the allogeneic manufacturing process further improved expansion of gene-edited cells and enabled production of hundreds of patient doses from a single manufacturing run, thereby reducing the manufacturing cost per dose into the same range as that of a monoclonal antibody.
Poster Presentation: "Anti-c-kit CAR-T Cells Afford Effective Eradication of Human AML and Normal Hematopoietic Cells in a Preclinical Model of Safer Non-Genotoxic Stem Cell Transplant Conditioning"Session Date/Time:Tuesday, May 11, 2021, 8:00am 10:00am ETAbstract Number:715
Poseida is investigating its anti-c-kit CAR-T program, which leverages its proprietary piggyBac DNA Delivery System in preclinical studies as a potentially safer precursor conditioning therapy to the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) for patients suffering from AML. The piggyBac delivery vectors under investigation include a transposon that generates pure CAR+ product as well as a safety switch that allows rapid clearance of the reactive CAR-T cells prior to donor transplant of hematopoietic stem cells. Preclinical data to be presented in the poster showed that the lead CAR-T cells that express the anti-c-kit binder (CAR 1) deplete up to 92% of human CD34+ stem and progenitor cells in bone marrow within 48 hours. Additionally, an enhanced anti-c-kit CAR-T product, CAR 2, killed an estimated >99% of leukemia cells, exceeding the killing ability of a single dose of 30 mg/kg dose of busulfan. These encouraging data suggest that stem cell-directed CAR-T cells may be a safer preconditioning regimen compared to the current standard of care and may expand access to treatment for acute myeloid leukemia patients needing HSC transplant.

DUBLIN, May 10, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Irish based cell engineering company, Avectas today announces the publication of 'A novel non-viral delivery method that enables efficient engineering of primary human T cells forex vivocell therapy applications' in leading international cell and gene therapy publication, Cytotherapy.1
Cytotherapy is the official journal of the International Cell & Gene Therapy Society (ISCT).
Dr Shirley O'Dea et al. examined the suitability of Avectas' SOLUPORE non-viral delivery system for engineering primary human T cells for cell therapy applications. This publication describes how the next generation of immune cell therapy products will require complex modifications using engineering technologies that can maintain high levels of cell functionality and how non-viral engineering methods such as SOLUPORE have the potential to address limitations associated with viral vectors.
Data demonstrates efficient transfection of human primary T Cells with mRNA and CRISPR CAS9 RNP cargos while consistently maintaining high levels of cell viability. Gene expression profiling revealed minimal up or down regulation of genes, demonstrating the low level of perturbation experienced by the cells during this transfection process in contrast to electroporation which resulted in substantial changes in immune gene expression. CAR T cells engineered using the SOLUPOREsystem exhibited high cytotoxicity against target cancer cellsin vitro and in vivo.
Avectas has previously published on the SOLUPORE Technology in PLOS ONE2 with citations in both Nature Biomedical Engineering3 and Chemical Reviews4.
Commenting on the publication, Dr Michael Maguire, CEO of Avectas, said: "It is impressive to see further published evidence showing the advantages of the SOLUPOREplatform in preserving cellular functionality essential for cell therapies. Want GMOs, Gene Editing and Access to New Science? Communication is Key – Seed World
Posted: at 10:55 pm
Climate change, growing populations and less arable land means advanced farming practices are more important than ever before.
While many in agriculture showed collective outrage over the so-called Impossible Burger, science supporters missed a critical benefit hiding in the controversy. The Impossible Burger is one of the few consumer-facing companies that proudly boasts GMO ingredients and customers still flock to it.
The team at Impossible Burger showcases the climate-saving benefits biotechnology can provide by showcasing the value of soy leghemoglobin the key protein element that gives the Impossible Burger its flavor and texture is a genetically engineer protein. Soy leghemoglobin is made by splicing soybean DNA into yeast, which is then produced in large-scale fermentation.
Seeing this market success, why arent GMOs widely accepted?
Frankly, because agriculturalists from the farm gate, to the lab, to the desks of CEOs have done a bad job telling the story.
I think its everybodys responsibility who is involved in agriculture to be involved in communicating, says Robb Fraley, who commercialized the first genetically modified soybean and now acts as a communicator for the industry. When I was growing up on a small farm in Illinois, more than half of the people who lived in the state were involved in agriculture. Today its less than 1%.
Its the responsibility of everyone involved in food and agriculture to reach out to the other 99% regarding the importance of new scientific advances to increase food production and improve the sustainability of farming, he continues.
The Challenge
Think back to the early 1990s when the FLAVR SAVR tomato was commercialized albeit short lived. It carried promise to reduce waste and improve flavor, a promise that never came to fruition.
When the first GMO product, the FLAVR SAVR tomato, came out people had no idea what GMO even meant, says Kurtis Baute, climate change activist who produces frequent videos promoting science. It was something that really came out of the dark for them, and it was surprising and scary for many. Because of that, we ended up shelving the idea.
The long and short of it, if you need a reminder, is public backlash led to pulling FLAVR SAVR tomatoes from the shelf despite the scientific reality there was no risk in consuming them. People didnt know what they were, and ignorance bred fear, which manifested itself into nixing the product.
Fear lives on. Activist groups around the world are still fighting against GMOs, despite what has now been more than 20 years of research indicating no adverse human or environmental effects.
And the stakes are high. GMO products could be the key to reducing the impact of climate change and tackling hunger and food insecurity around the world. If science isnt trusted, GMOs and other modern practices are at risk.
Start the Conversation
For many scientists and experts in their fields, its easy to overload people with facts. But the fact is, most people who dont have scientific backgrounds dont care about the nitty-gritty details of scientific testing as an expert would. It takes a different approach.
Anytime you are promoting scientific ideas, youre going to have people who are not excited about them, says Kevin Folta, professor at the University of Florida. It applies to all science, whether youre talking about genetic engineering or climate change.
Before starting the conversation, think about how to be a better communicator. It starts by figuring out what neighbors, friends, relatives and, really, anyone cares about. Here are a few tips to get the conversation started the right way:
Its tough to convert someone to 100% stand behind science, but its possible to sway them on several aspects. Understand their backgrounds and why they think the way they do. Employing these three tactics helps get the conversation off on the right foot.
Where to Reach People
The world of communications has changed dramatically since the early 90s when the first GMOs were commercialized. This presents immense opportunity to reach a wide array of people, but that opportunity is not without challenge.
When I first joined Monsanto, you published papers, did newsprint and that kind of thing, Fraley says. Today most of the information people get is on social media its digital. If youre not on social media, basically, your voice doesnt count.
Social media takes the audience from one or two people, to potentially millions. However, its not just any post that will capture the attention of the masses communication looks different online.
Ive basically made a career by building over-the-top projects, explains Baute. For example, I set up 13,799 dominoes so I could show a timeline of the history of the universe. It was a spectacle that engaged people in personal storytelling so I could talk about real science.
There are amazing stories to be told we shouldnt miss that opportunity, he continues. For example, if theres a new product engage people in personal storytelling about how these products came to be. For some technology, it could be 100 years in the making.
Not everyone will want to set up nearly 14,000 dominos or live in a bubble like Baute did to talk about climate change, but theres opportunities to find a fun way to talk about science all the same. Perhaps it makes more sense to tell someone about a personal connection to agriculture and science. Find the story and tell it.
I once baked a cake in 418 steps to explain genetics, Baute says. Sometimes it helps to have a little fun when explaining complex topics.
Protect Science for Tomorrow
Its never been more critical than today to advocate for science literacy. While social media, television and other platforms represent opportunity to talk about science, it also dispels a tremendous amount of misinformation.
We need to be champions and advocates across the biological, the digital and the agronomic space to amplify the accurate messages, Fraley says. Because its just 1% of the population in agriculture reaching out to the 99%.
Europes Science Desert
Scientists looking for new opportunities to apply the latest and greatest technologies in agriculture: steer clear of the European Union. Policies in the region are virtually devoid of scientific reason and instead are political decisions based on pressure from activist groups, along with misunderstanding and emotions.
For example, the 27-member countries are facing a new proposal called the Farm to Fork Strategy that threatens producer access to technologies and could force them to abandon common farming techniques.
Im not sure there was much science involved [in creating the Farm to Fork Strategy], says David Zaruk, EU risk and science communications specialist. The proposed strategy, in a nutshell, would reduce pesticide use by 50%, fertilizers by 20% and convert 25% of all agricultural land to organic production under the assumption these moves would reduce the impact of climate change.
This isnt the first-time agricultural practices have come under fire in the EU either. The countries previously passed regulations that require all products made with gene editing technology to be labeled as GMO regardless of whether or not new genes were introduced in the process.
Researchers in the EU who oppose such rules are between a rock and a hard place, Zaruk explains. Many scientists who support GMOs, gene editing, pesticide use and other common agricultural technologies find themselves without jobs or under attack personally from activist groups.
Most of the scientist that do speak out are retired, he continues. Regardless of the risk, Zaruk still speaks out about the benefits of changing policies to enable farmers to use the latest agricultural technologies available and encourages other scientists to do the same.
The EU can, and should, serve as a warning to other countries about what happens when science is ignored in the policy arena and what happens when agriculturalists arent consulted when planning policy.
Canadas Gene Editing Conundrum
The clock is ticking in Canada. At the end of May, the comment period regarding Canadas Novel Food Regulations will be over and a decision that could make or break the future of plant breeding will be rendered.
This decision will directly impact how gene editing, through technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9, is used and identified to consumers. The question? Should there be additional regulations for crops created by gene editing like the regulations applied to GMO crops?
Cas9 [based gene editing] is a great example of something thats happened naturally for billions of years and now were applying a process to our benefit, says Kurtis Baute, a Canadian native who advocates for science literacy and improving the climate on various channels. Its important to communicate the benefit. This technique will be more precise, and well know exactly what were breeding for, compared to older breeding techniques.
CRISPR/Cas9 and other gene editing technologies could revolutionize the breeding industry if given the latitude to be used. The precision associated with the technique results in better products, faster production and the ability to cater breeding to the needs of todays farmer and consumer.
