How Tom Cruise, Scarlett Johansson and NBC might have just gutted the Golden Globes – Yahoo Entertainment

Posted: May 11, 2021 at 11:17 pm

The past few weeks haven't exactly been a golden age for the Golden Globes. The annual event honoring film and television has been embroiled in near-constant controversy following a February investigation by the Los Angeles Timesthat discovered the group behind the Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, did not have a single Black member among its ranks, among other troubling revelations.

By mid-March, Hollywoods leading publicists joined with representatives from Time's Up and Color of Change had taken a stand against the HFPA and demanded reform. Last week, the 87-person HFPA announced its proposed changes, which, rather than satisfying critics, set off a new firestorm that is now threatening the very existence of the Globes.

There have been boycott announcements from Netflix, Amazon and Warner Media, as well as strong criticism from celebrities (and Avengers costars) Scarlett Johansson, who leveled charges of sexism at the HFPA "bordering on sexual harassment," and Mark Ruffalo.

But a blistering one-two punch came within minutes Monday. NBC struck the initial blow, announcing the network will not air the 2022 Globes due the ongoing controversy marking the first time the Globes won't air on NBC since 1996. "We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform," the network said in a statement. "However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes."

Tom Cruise made waves moments later, returning the three Globes he has won to protest the HFPA.

With NBC pulling the plug and presumably suspending its lucrative broadcasting contract the HFPA loses its main source of income and its most visible platform. Since NBC began televising the Globes in the 1990s, the event has gained tremendous influence in Hollywood.

Ultimately, though, the Cruise news could be more impactful. The Top Gunner's actions could lead to what many industry insiders believe is a long overdue divorce between the HFPA and its cozy relationship with the film and television industries.

Story continues

The actor whose three Globes came for Born on the Fourth of July (Best Actor, Drama), Jerry Maguire (Best Actor, Comedy or Musical) and Magnolia (Best Supporting Actor) remains one of the most powerful, influential actors in show business and commands a worldwide following. And unlike someone like Ruffalo, a tireless activist when not acting, Cruise rarely engages politically. His move could presage similar actions from other Golden Globe winners.

While distancing itself from the 2022 ceremony, NBC did leave the window open for a reunion. "Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023," the network's statement continued. Perhaps helping NBC decide to pause the Globes for a year: the 2021 ceremony was the lowest-rated installment ever, with fewer than 7 million people tuning in, part of a disturbing trend that has seen ratings for all awards shows plummet.

The Globes has long embraced its image as an actor-friendly party. While some groused about the HFPA's questionable ethics, few dared to speak out publicly against the powerful organization for fear of repercussions. Notably Gary Oldman ranted in 2014 that the Globes were "a meaningless event" and called the HFPA "90 nobodies having a wank."

But Oldman changed his tune during the 2018 awards season, where he attended HFPA events and thanked the group upon receiving a Golden Globe for playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, en route to winning an Oscar.

This time, however, the stakes feel different. Cruise's actions reverberated around the industry, as have the public comments of Johansson, Ruffalo and prominent filmmakers like Ava DuVernay.

Johansson's words in particular struck a chord in Hollywood. "As an actor promoting a film, one is expected to participate in awards season by attending press conferences as well as awards shows. In the past, this has often meant facing sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment. It is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to participate in their conferences," Johansson, a five-time Globes nominee, said in a statement released over the weekend. "The HFPA is an organization that was legitimized by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition and the industry followed suit. Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole."

In a statement Monday afternoon, the HFPA attempted a conciliatory tone. "Regardless of the next air date of the Golden Globes, implementing transformational changes as quickly and as thoughtfully as possible remains the top priority for our organization," the group said in a statement. "We invite our partners in the industry to the table to work with us on the systemic reform that is long overdue, both in our organization as well as within the industry at large." The group also listed a detailed calendar outlining its reform efforts. The response has so far been muted.

The Globes banks on A-list stars and its national broadcast, and with those stars and the studios, networks and publicists who support them abandoning ship and NBC cutting the cord, the HFPA needs to reboot to survive. The clock is ticking.

‘Done the impossible’: NBA in disbelief over Russell Westbrook feat – Yahoo Sport Australia

Russell Westbrook has cemented his place in NBA history by surpassing league legend Oscar Robertson's career triple double record.

The former MVP notched his 182nd triple double with a 28 point, 21 assist and 13 rebound effort in the Washington Wizards' 125-124 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday.

'CAN'T BELIEVE IT': NBA fans gutted over devastating injury news

'I'M IN BABY': Liz Cambage backflips on Olympics boycott threat

A missed three-pointer to win the game at the buzzer slightly soured the historic achievement, which came after he tied Robertson's record against the Indiana Pacers last weekend.

Westbrook eclipsed the record when he grabbed his 10th rebound with 8:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. The moment came during a 19-1 run that cut Atlanta's lead from 19 to one.

He already had 21 points and 16 assists. The Atlanta crowd responded to Westbrook's history-making rebound with chants of "Russell."

Westbrook missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds. Afterward, he sought out the game ball from officiating crew chief Tom Washington before accepting congratulations from his peers.

Robertson's record stood for nearly 50 years from the final triple-double of his 14-year career on March 24, 1974. Westbrook is in the 13th season of his career and has played 100 fewer games than Robertson.

Magic Johnson's 138 career triple-doubles are third on the all-time list.

No other active player has reached the century mark. Injured Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is sitting on 99 career triple-doubles.

"The things hes been able to do, hopefully, we will say, Give him his love, give him his respect," Johnson told The Athletic's David Aldridge after Westbrook posted his ridiculous 14-point, 21-rebound, 24-assist triple-double last week.

"This is really big. This is something I couldnt even do. I know how big it is."

Story continues

Robertson is no stranger to Westbrook coming for his records. The Hall of Famer's single-season triple-double record of 41 in 1961-62 stood until Westbrook's 42 during his 2016-17 MVP campaign.

At the time, those two seasons marked the only times a player had ever averaged a triple-double for an entire season.

"I could not be happier for him," Robertson wrote for The Undefeated in 2017, when Westbrook broke his single-season record.

Robertson even predicted in that same column four years ago, "If he stays healthy, theres no reason [Westbrook] couldnt eventually break my career record of 181 triple-double games."

Anthony Davis had 42 points and 12 rebounds and the Los Angeles Lakers reignited their NBA title defence with a commanding 123-110 victory over the high-flying Phoenix Suns.

The Suns are now two games behind the Utah Jazz (50-18) atop the Western Conference with only four games remaining while the Lakers, who never trailed at Staples Center, improved to 38-30 and one game behind the sixth-place Portland Trail Blazers.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Alex Caruso each had 17 points on Sunday and the Lakers, missing LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma, won for just the third time in their past 11 games.

"I think I'm feeling about 20 per cent of my old self ... just kidding," Davis joked after the game.

"I'm getting my legs back, I'm getting my rhythm back. Getting my steps back on both ends of the floor, so feeling good ... We're headed in the right direction."

Cameron Payne had 24 points for Phoenix, Devin Booker added 21, and Chris Paul's double-double included 13 points and 10 assists.

Bradley Beal again responds to Kent Bazemore: ‘Don’t bring my injury into it’ – Yahoo Sports

Posted: at 11:17 pm

In his conversation with Yahoo Sports' LaJethro Jenkins, Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal was more measured than his Twitter rant responding to Golden State Warriors veteran Kent Bazemore's comments.

"Keep it hoops," Beal told Yahoo Sports when asked to elaborate on his takedown of Bazemore.

For the uninitiated, Bazemore took an unnecessary shot at Beal's recent injury during his pregame media availability on Monday. Beal and Golden State star Stephen Curry are currently neck and neck in the race for the scoring title. While lauding his Warriors teammate's performance over the weekend, Bazemore said, "49 points in 29 minutes, that's unreal, and we've got guys hurting hamstrings trying to keep up."

Beal sat out Monday's loss to the Atlanta Hawks with a left hamstring strain and is expected to miss Wednesday's rematch. He is averaging 31.4 points per game with three games remaining on Washington's schedule. Curry's 36 points on Monday raised his average to 31.9 points entering his final three games.

Keep in mind, Bazemore is averaging seven points per game for the Warriors. His career high is 32 points, roughly the equivalent of Beal's average this season. Beal had plenty of material to work with, lambasting Bazemore on Twitter during Golden State's game on Monday night. A sampling of Beal's onslaught:

Asked about Beal's diatribe following his own 19-point outing against the Utah Jazz, Bazemore said, via the San Francisco Chronicle's Rusty Simmons:

"I guess you cant joke anymore, but man, whatever. I feel like Im pretty light-hearted guy, and I stay in my own lane. I dont say things and ruffle feathers, but if you want to know where my loyalty is: Its to SC30 (Stephen Curry). It kind of got out of hand. I didnt check my phone all day until after the game, so its kind of blowing up, but I dont get involved in that crap."

Bazemore did not find it necessary to apologize to Beal.

Story continues

Itll pass," Bazemore added. "Tomorrow Ill probably wake up, and everything will be the same."

Indeed. With a night to sleep on the exchange, Beal avoided unleashing the verbal edition of a clown GIF.

"For me, it was nothing against Steph," Beal told Yahoo Sports. "I'm gonna just nip that now. I'm not sitting here debating about whose side to choose. Obviously, you should be on your teammate's side, but just keep it that. Keep it hoops. Don't bring my injury into it or me into it. I have my goals, and why I go hoop and what I'm focused on are totally different. I could care less about people saying, 'Oh, it's a close race.'

"I'm here to hoop. Everybody knows I can score. I've been doing this for the last couple years, so it's nothing new. I'm not chasing after nothing. So, for me, I just want to keep it that. Just keep it hoops. Stay over there. I didn't say anything. I didn't go out of my way to do anything, so that's all my point was."

If he sits on Wednesday, as expected, Beal would need 95 points over the final two games to match Curry's current average of 31.9 points per game. That number could rise or fall with Curry's production over the next week. Both the Wizards and Warriors are still battling for seeding in the NBA's play-in tournament.

Welcome to Mars! Bill Nye and Robert Zubrin hail new Red Planet visitors. – Space.com

Posted: at 11:13 pm

Two prominent space advocacy groups are cheering the new generation of Mars explorers.

While NASA's newly landed Perseverance rover is getting the lion's share of coverage in the United States, both the United Arab Emirates and China also entered Mars orbit successfully in February.

The Planetary Society's CEO Bill Nye expressed optimism that China's Tianwen-1 mission might open up opportunities for collaboration between the country and the United States, which have had tricky international relations for decades over matters ranging from intellectual property to security concerns and human rights. Notably, Tianwen-1 is a planned triple mission an orbiter, lander and rover that hopes to touch down on Mars this spring.

Related: The boldest Mars missions in history

"Here is an example where the collaboration is going to be between scientists," Nye told Space.com. "Yes, I understand the concern of the military. The technology, they don't want to transfer it without [addressing] pirating, abuse of intellectual property rights and so on. But just that people are talking that scientists in China and scientists in the West are talking about Mars is really significant."

The Mars Society's president, Robert Zubrin, called the Chinese effort "a remarkable thing" after other recent achievements by the program, including the first lunar farside landing in 2019 and a lunar sample return mission in 2020. "It's now merging into its rightful place with the world's leading countries, and certainly this will encourage a lot of Chinese to become scientists and engineers. I think that's why they did it," Zubrin told Space.com.

The UAE's Hope mission is also attracting attention for its emphasis on bringing science and engineering expertise to the tiny Arab country, which is investing heavily in education in preparation for a post-oil economy. Nye said that the old joke about the complication of rocket science applies in Hope's case, calling the achievement "not trivial" because the UAE made it to orbit on the first try. "It's not easy, man. And they done it. It's really fantastic," he said.

The UAE, China and previously India (whose Mars Orbiter Mission arrived at the Red Planet in 2014) represent a new generation of planetary explorers. Traditionally, Mars has been the province of large space agencies from the United States, the Soviet Union and Europe.

But changes in spacecraft technology such as miniaturization and cheaper rockets are enabling smaller space agencies to shoot much further into space than ever before. Satellites are smaller and more powerful thanks to advances in computing; the first-ever cubesats reached Mars in 2018 with NASA's InSight mission. Rockets are also lighter and cheaper, due to the number of companies and countries manufacturing them in the past decade and ongoing improvements in metrics such as mass and materials.

Both Nye and Zubrin pointed to the context in which these newer space missions are happening, too. When NASA and the Soviet Union were slinging early missions to Mars in the 1960s, the two countries were competing in a political- and military-driven "space race" for dominance, which also fueled much of the push behind the Apollo moon landings between 1969 and 1972. While national pride is still on the line with these newer Mars missions, Nye and Zubrin acknowledged, they see a new emphasis on bringing the softer benefits of science and engineering to the public with each successful launch.

"What we're striving for here is not dominance, but who can achieve the most expansive human knowledge," Zubrin said, adding that as each smaller country makes it to Mars, it inspires other countries to go. "If you were to say in Chile right now, 'Why don't you do a Mars mission?' it seems more possible because the UAE did it."

The likelihood of these missions learning new things abut the cosmos is also exciting. "They're doing it because it brings out the best in people, it brings out the best in their scientists and engineers and inspires the country, and you're going to make discoveries that you didn't anticipate," Nye said of the new countries' achievements. "You're going to learn more about the cosmos. Then there's the practical things predicting the [Martian] weather and [testing] communication."

Both the Mars Society and the Planetary Society advocate for space regularly among politicians and the American public, looking to gain more support for their individual mandates. The Mars Society, established in 1998, calls for exploring Mars and "creating a permanent human presence on the Red Planet," according to its website. The Planetary Society blends in goals of space technology and giving individual humans worldwide a voice in planning through a mandate of "empowering the world's citizens to advance space science and exploration."

The Planetary Society's short-term goals on Mars includes supporting ongoing planning for the sample-return mission and parsing early results from the NASA Ingenuity helicopter, which made the first-ever powered flights on Mars this year.

Related: Mars helicopter Ingenuity spots Perseverance rover from the air (photo)

"We have a helicopter sitting on Mars, everybody, this is not trivial," Nye pointed out. Although he spoke with Space.com before the landmark flights, he noted the importance of the sorties and the project as a whole.

Adding a helicopter capability will be "really extraordinary" not only for the sheer value of flying, but also to give valuable context to geologists. "Rather than relying on orbiting cameras which are extraordinary and give you amazing detail of the Martian surface [you will] be this close to [the surface] with this drone Come on. It's just going to be fantastic."

Zubrin added that he wouldn't be surprised if SpaceX's Elon Musk brings people to Mars in the near future. That said, he isn't quite in agreement with Musk's methodology, although they do share some elements such as using Mars resources in-situ for spacecraft fuel.

Simply put, Zubrin's "Mars Direct" mission calls for an Earth Return Vehicle (ERV) that launches uncrewed to Mars and arrives at the Red Planet six months later; subsequently, a new ERV and astronaut habitat would fly to the Red Planet every 26 months to bring people and supplies to Mars. Musk's Starship, by contrast, will zoom off to Mars by itself and then lift off itself at the end of the mission; there are no plans for a separate Mars base and Musk hopes to go quickly, as soon as 2024.

Zubrin says he doesn't feel Starship is suited for a Mars takeoff due to its sheer size, but he did express admiration for Musk's vision; the two men met early last year in Boca Chica, Texas, nearby where Starships typically launch. Zubrin says his impression is Musk wants to "get to it" with Mars exploration rather than waiting for a space agency like NASA to support him. "He is purpose-driven and he doesn't do anything in order to please someone else," Zubrin said.

People Share the Book Titles That Would Make Them Walk Out of a First Date – Newsweek

Posted: at 11:12 pm

Hundreds of thousands of books are published each year. But it's only the lucky few of a small percentage of published works become widely well-known.

That said, not all popular novels have a good reputation among readers. And it's no surprise that the more popular a novel is, the more harshly the book appears to be judged in the court of public opinion.

On Monday, author Michele Wojciechowski, who later credited @ogbrenna for inspiring the prompt, asked Twitter one book-related question, leading thousands of users to sound off in response: "You're on a first date with someone, and they tell you the name of their favorite book. You immediately leave. What's the book?"

The tweet went viral, and now has more than 21,000 likes and over 18,000 replies. The list was diverse, but some books were hated more than others. According to the responses, here are some of Twitter's most hated books.

The Fountainhead/Atlas Shrugged/Author Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand has been a controversial voice within the literary community for quite some time. She's best known as the creator of objectivism, a philosophy that opposes state interference.

A vocal supporter of capitalism and the free market economy, Rand and objectivism have had a huge influence on the American libertarian movement, and have been a popular talking point amongst American philosophers for decades. Because her politics and literature are so intricately woven together, it's no surprise that those who oppose her views would also despise her works.

One user had this to say of Ayn Rand: "If I'm on a date and someone that person thinks the writings and philosophy of Ayn Rand is amazing, we are not compatible. I'm too old to debate someone politely over dinner about it. Life is short."

Also, "Atlas Shrugged" is over 1,000 pages long, which led readers to ask: did Ayn Rand really need to say that much?

"Atlas Shrugged is a 1000 page long manifesto about everything a 14-year-old believes about free market economics," tweeted one passionate reader. "It's interminably boring and there's so much better stuff even in that branch of thought."

Tweeted another: "Let's face it, if you made it all the way through that book and decided it was your favorite, you are very likely an extremely boring person and probably not a good date."

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

This one might be a shock to many, but commenters were clear that if "Harry Potter" was their theoretical date's favorite book, then they were walking out.

While J.K. Rowling has also become quite controversial as of late for her beliefs regarding the transgender community, the negativity surrounding the series in this specific thread is engrained in something much simpler than politics: it's a children's series.

"My issue isn't really the books, but if your FAVORITE book is a YA book you just are not enough of a reader for me," commented one Twitter user in the thread.

Those against "Harry Potter" either appeared to have a deep-seated hatred towards the series or just felt that their date should not still be reading YA fiction. Though many would disagree, in this particular thread, "Harry Potter" is a non-starter.

"I am an adult who reads a fair amount and I prefer to date adults who do the same," said one Twitter user. "If a person hasn't progressed beyond YA literature, I suspect we'll run out of things to talk about sooner rather than later."

Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler

Unshockingly, many said they wanted nothing to do with a person whose favorite book is "Mein Kampf."Published in 1925, this is Hitler's autobiographical manifesto. The book outlines his political ideology and his future plans for Germany.

"If Mein Kampf being someone's favorite book isn't a dealbreaker, you might be a Nazi," wrote one reader.

"Mein Kampf" is widely studied by historians; however, many agreed that finding enjoyment in reading this book, to the point of calling it a favorite, is a huge red flag.

"I'm all for familiarizing oneself with controversial books of historical importance, but if a guy's -favorite- book is Mein Kampf I am running for the exits," said another Twitter user.

Another agreed that if their date had admitted to reading "Mein Kampf" for academic purposes, they'd understand. But if the book was their date's favorite? They'd run for the hills.

Other honorable mentions included: The Bible, "Catcher in the Rye," and "50 Shade of Gray."

As many battled over their literary taste, some argued that anyone who loves to read shouldn't be judged, but encouraged and celebrated.

One user shared a screenshot of a post written by a librarian, which starts off by saying, "You do not need to apologize for the books you choose to read."

Others would just be happy to know that their date loves to read.

"You know what," tweeted one user, "if they read books at all that's a win."

Zack Snyder Has Delayed The Fountainhead Because He Thinks It Will Freak Everyone Out – MovieWeb

Posted: at 11:12 pm

When it comes to filmmaking, Zack Snyder believes in not pulling any punches. This no-holds-barred approach led to the creation of the DCEU under Snyder, where Superman is a brooding alien struggling against a suspicious world, and Batman is a jaded vigilante who kills his enemies. Snyder's DCEU movies have led to highly polarized reactions from critics and the general public. And the filmmaker appears to have learned to expect such reactions to his work. In a recent interview, Snyder explained that he has decided to postpone his passion project, a movie adaptation of Ayn Rand's novel The Fountainhead until a more liberal political climate arrives.

Even before Zack Snyder took a shine to the text, The Fountainhead has been a subject of endless controversy. The book tells the story of a gifted architect, with a fierce need to protect his creations from outside interference, to the extent that he prefers to blow up the best building he ever created rather than let it be modified by lesser architects.

Under the guise of the main story, Ayn Rand uses her novel to expound her views on "Objectivism", a movement she created, that believes that one's actions must always be governed by complete self-interest, rather than out of a sense of altruism or from a desire to sacrifice one's own advantage for the good of the collective. According to Snyder, his interest in The Fountainhead is due to his interest in the story of the central architect rather than the Objectivist subtext.

Interestingly, what happened to the architect in The Fountainhead is almost exactly what happened with Snyder in the DCEU. After laboring for years on Justice League, Snyder exited the project following a personal tragedy. Joss Whedon was brought on in his stead and proceeded to radically change the movie to make it very different from Snyder's personal vision. Snyder once even stated that he would prefer to "blow up" his director's cut of Justice League rather than include a single frame of Whedon's reshoots.

For now, the filmmaker is busy working on his next movie Army of the Dead for Netflix, which is being described as a "zombie heist" flick. Directed and co-written by Zack Snyder, Army of the Dead stars Dave Bautista, Garret Dillahunt, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Raul Castillo, Tig Notaro, Theo Rossi, and Ana de la Reguera. The film will release on Netflix on May 21. This news originated at iheart.com.

No New COVID-19 Deaths Reported In Most Of U.K., As Restrictions Set To Ease – NPR

Passengers, some wearing protective face coverings and some not, travel during rush hour on the London Underground last month.

LONDON England, Scotland and Northern Ireland on Monday recorded no new COVID-19 deaths a milestone that health experts said represents an encouraging sign, but caution could be temporary.

Meanwhile, Wales recorded just four coronavirus-related deaths. Even so, it's a sharp contrast to a January peak across the U.K., when about 1,800 deaths were recorded in a single day.

Although it is likely that because of reporting delays, more deaths will be reported in the coming days, the number of confirmed infections in the U.K. is also down, suggesting the trend is heading in the right direction.

Dr. Michael Head, a senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, told The Guardian that reported deaths often reflect "lag time in system."

"However, regardless of reporting idiosyncrasies, the daily numbers of COVID-19 deaths are much lower than even three months ago," he said.

Experts said the improving numbers were an indication that vaccinations now hovering around 600,000 people per day for both first and second doses were having a positive impact.

The latest numbers come as the U.K.'s coronavirus alert level has been lowered from four to three, meaning the virus is still in general circulation, but that transmission is no longer rising exponentially.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday also confirmed that restrictions put in place to contain the spread of coronavirus were set to be eased. He said people in England would be able to hug loved ones, dine and drink inside restaurants and pubs, and travel abroad on vacation from May 17.

As lockdown has gradually eased, the country is rumbling back to life. London tube trains, largely empty for months, are becoming packed again and traffic has returned to London's suburbs.

Many commuters on public transport continued to don masks as required, but fewer are wearing them while walking along the streets.

In Scotland, indoor seating in pubs and restaurants has already returned, but with an 8 p.m. close and no alcohol service indoors. Coronavirus restrictions are managed on a regional basis with the governments of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland making their own rules.

NPR's Scott Neuman reported from Washington.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update: FDA Authorizes Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for Emergency Use in Adolescents in Another Important Action in Fight…

Posted: at 11:11 pm

For Immediate Release: May 10, 2021

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration expanded the emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for the prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to include adolescents 12 through 15 years of age. The FDA amended the EUA originally issued on Dec. 11, 2020 for administration in individuals 16 years of age and older.

The FDAs expansion of the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine to include adolescents 12 through 15 years of age is a significant step in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, said Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D. Todays action allows for a younger population to be protected from COVID-19, bringing us closer to returning to a sense of normalcy and to ending the pandemic. Parents and guardians can rest assured that the agency undertook a rigorous and thorough review of all available data, as we have with all of our COVID-19 vaccine emergency use authorizations.

From March 1, 2020 through April 30, 2021, approximately 1.5 million COVID-19 cases in individuals 11 to 17 years of age have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Children and adolescents generally have a milder COVID-19 disease course as compared to adults. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine is administered as a series of two doses, three weeks apart, the same dosage and dosing regimen for 16 years of age and older.

The FDA has determined that Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine has met the statutory criteria to amend the EUA, and that the known and potential benefits of this vaccine in individuals 12 years of age and older outweigh the known and potential risks, supporting the vaccines use in this population.

Having a vaccine authorized for a younger population is a critical step in continuing to lessen the immense public health burden caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDAs Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. With science guiding our evaluation and decision-making process, the FDA can assure the public and medical community that the available data meet our rigorous standards to support the emergency use of this vaccine in the adolescent population 12 years of age and older.

The FDA has updated the Fact Sheets for Healthcare Providers Administering the Vaccine (Vaccination Providers) and for Recipients and Caregivers with information to reflect the use of the vaccine in the adolescent population, including the benefits and risks of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.

The EUA amendment for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine was issued to Pfizer Inc. The issuance of an EUA is not an FDA approval (licensure) of a vaccine. The EUA will be effective until the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of the emergency use of drugs and biologics for prevention and treatment of COVID-19 is terminated, and may be revised or revoked if it is determined the EUA no longer meets the statutory criteria for issuance or to protect public health or safety.

The available safety data to support the EUA in adolescents down to 12 years of age, include 2,260 participants ages 12 through 15 years old enrolled in an ongoing randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial in the United States. Of these, 1,131 adolescent participants received the vaccine and 1,129 received a saline placebo. More than half of the participants were followed for safety for at least two months following the second dose.

The most commonly reported side effects in the adolescent clinical trial participants, which typically lasted 1-3 days, were pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, chills, muscle pain, fever and joint pain. With the exception of pain at the injection site, more adolescents reported these side effects after the second dose than after the first dose, so it is important for vaccination providers and recipients to expect that there may be some side effects after either dose, but even more so after the second dose. The side effects in adolescents were consistent with those reported in clinical trial participants 16 years of age and older. It is important to note that as a general matter, while some individuals experience side effects following any vaccination, not every individuals experience will be the same and some people may not experience side effects.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine should not be given to anyone with a known history of a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxisto any component of the vaccine. Since its authorization for emergency use, rare severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported following administration of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine in some recipients.

The effectiveness data to support the EUA in adolescents down to 12 years of age is based on immunogenicity and an analysis of COVID-19 cases. The immune response to the vaccine in 190 participants, 12 through 15 years of age, was compared to the immune response of 170 participants, 16 through 25 years of age. In this analysis, the immune response of adolescents was non-inferior to (at least as good as) the immune response of the older participants. An analysis of cases of COVID-19 occurring among participants, 12 through 15 years of age, seven days after the second dose was also conducted. In this analysis, among participants without evidence of prior infection with SARS-CoV-2, no cases of COVID-19 occurred among 1,005 vaccine recipients and 16 cases of COVID-19 occurred among 978 placebo recipients; the vaccine was 100% effective in preventing COVID-19. At this time, there are limited data to address whether the vaccine can prevent transmission of the virus from person to person. In addition, at this time, data are not available to determine how long the vaccine will provide protection.

As part of the original EUA request, Pfizer Inc. submitted a plan to continue monitoring the safety of the vaccine as it is used under EUA. This plan has been updated to include the newly authorized adolescent population, and includes longer-term safety follow-up for participants enrolled in ongoing clinical trials, as well as other activities aimed at monitoring the safety of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and ensuring that any safety concerns are identified and evaluated in a timely manner.

It is mandatory for Pfizer Inc. and vaccination providers to report the following to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System for Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine: all vaccine administration errors, serious adverse events, cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome and cases of COVID-19 that result in hospitalization or death.

People who need help getting to a vaccination site will be able to get free or discounted rides through Uber and Lyft, the White House says. Here, a woman receives her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at a mass vaccination site in Aberdeen, Md., after getting a ride to the site from her landlord.

Anyone needing a ride to get a COVID-19 vaccine shot will be able to get a free trip from the ride-sharing companies Lyft and Uber, the White House announced Tuesday, in the latest push to encourage Americans to get vaccinated.

"The feature will launch in the next two weeks and run until July 4," the White House said.

People who want to use the program would need to select a vaccination site near them and then redeem the companies' offer of a free ride. The two ride-sharing firms will promote the offer in their apps.

The initiative is a new facet of President Biden's push to ensure 70% of all U.S. adults get at least one vaccine shot by July 4. The two companies are "driving America closer" to reaching that goal, the White House said.

More than 58% of American adults have now received at least one vaccination shot, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday. More than 44% of adults are fully vaccinated.

Lyft says it will offer a "ride code" to cover up to $15 of each trip to or from a vaccination site, adding that it expects the code will erase "most, if not all, of riders' fares." The offer covers daytime rides on bikes and scooters, as well as in cars. People will be able to sign up for their ride code by May 24, the company said.

Uber did not immediately provide details about its plan, but both Uber and Lyft have previously pledged to offer millions of rides to people who need help getting to a vaccine appointment.

In Uber's earlier effort, the company promised to provide up to 10 million free or discounted rides to help people get vaccinated, particularly "communities of color that have been disproportionately hurt by the pandemic," as the company said in December.

In another part of the U.S. effort to make it easier for people to get vaccinated, the White House says the government will broker partnerships between retail pharmacies and community colleges, which will then host vaccination clinics for students, staff and local communities.

The U.S. has reported more than 32.7 million COVID-19 cases, including more than 582,000 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
