Best Supplements for Better Skin, According to Experts | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
Posted: May 11, 2021 at 11:51 pm
We're all looking forward to the day when we aren't micro-analyzing our own complexions on Zoom, oh, 20 hours a week. But until that wonderful moment finally comes, we may as well do the best we can to help our skinthe largest organ in our bodieslook its best.
Beyond including foods that improve your skin in your diet, there's also a slew of supplements that can help your visage glow, stay young and healthy, and keep blemishes at bay. Below, experts share their go-to supplements for luminous, healthy skin. It's worth noting: Before adding a new supplement to your routine, always consult with a medical professional. And for more on how to eat healthy, don't miss the 7 Healthiest Foods to Eat Right Now.
Let's hear it for this potent skin-protector, folks. "Stress and increased toxins naturally increase the need for antioxidants, especially vitamin C, as it plays a significant role in the structure and function of the skin. Healthy skin needs a high amount of vitamin C to stimulate collagen production, protect from harmful UV rays, heal wounds, and act as an antioxidant to protect the skin from free radicals," Ruby Ali, MS, RDNsays.
"This means that vitamin C can help you have smoother skin with fewer wrinkles, reduced inflammation, and even say goodbye to acne and hello to a brighter complexion."

"There are two primary causes of accelerated aging on the skin: excessive unprotected sun exposure and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs form as a result of sugar combined with fat or protein," says Trista K. Best, MPH, RD, LDN, a registered dietitian with Balance One, noting that this describes most processed convenience foods like potato chips, ice cream, and baked goods.
Antioxidant-specific supplements can work to counteract this damage through vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, Best explains.
"Antioxidant blend formulations will provide highly potent blends of herbs and fruit extracts. These ingredients provide plant compounds like flavonoids that have been scientifically proven to remove or reduce free radical damage that is connected with aging and a range of other conditions," she elaborates, noting that she personally likes NOW's Super Antioxidants.
Some common examples of plant compounds to look for in a supplement include green tea extract, milk thistle, turmeric root, bromelain, ginkgo biloba, ginger, bilberry, quercetin, and grape seed extract. Best says "each of these antioxidants is unique in its ability to find and eradicate free radical damage."
"This might seem out of the ordinary, but stress hugely affects the health of the skin," Ali says. One herbal supplement, ashwagandha (aka Withania somnifera), has been used for centuries for its healing properties and may help counteract the effects of some of that stress.
"Ashwagandha is a powerful adaptogen that acts as an antioxidant, has anti-inflammatory properties, and makes the body more resilient against stressthereby promoting a concoction of the right hormones/chemicals in the body for healthier skin," Ali adds.
Her go-to way to take this supplement powder is with a matcha green tea latte in the morning or a smoothie for lunch (or both!).

"Collagen peptides supplements are an easy way to boost your skin and hair health. They are easy to take and can help improve your overall skin health by reducing wrinkles and dryness of the skin while increasing elasticity. Collagen peptides can also help with hair and strengthening of the follicle," say plastic surgeons Bill Kortesis, MD, FACS and Gaurav Bharti, MD, FACS, of K&B Management, noting that they personally take these supplements and have noticed an improvement in their skin and hair quality.
Check out what happened when one writer drank collagen peptides for two weeks here.
"Vitamin B5, aka pantothenic acid, supports skin health. If your diet isn't as well-balanced as it should be, adding this supplement could help clear up acne," says Yoram Harth, MD, board certified dermatologist and medical director of MDacne.
"This vitamin has been shown to reduce sebum (an oily, waxy substance secreted by glands in your skin) production. Vitamin B5 is also used for stress relief, indirectly aiding acne prevention through lowering anxiety levels," he continues, noting that vitamins and supplements for acne aren't a replacement for medical-grade topical and oral treatments.
"Taking the right supplements with the right amount of vitamins can help with skin health complementing the basic anti-acne treatment," he adds. "[Supplements such as] Vitamin B5 and DIM are believed to provide efficacy comparable to some acne medications."
Zinc is a miraculous mineral when it comes to skin health. "This mineral is beneficial to people with skin hair and nail disorders, including acne," Dr. Harth says. "Zinc is believed to reduce the [inflammation caused by the bacteria responsible for acne], decrease skin redness related to acne, and reduce keratinocyte proliferation, reducing the risk for clogged skin pores." To get zinc from your diet, check out these 20 Foods High in Zinc.
It's time to befriend this nutrient-dense algae. "The best way to ensure healthy skin is by paying attention not only to what you put on your skin but also what you put in your body. Taken internally, nutrient-dense chlorella works as an antioxidant to boost immunity and support detoxification for healthy skin," says board-certified osteopathic dermatologist Andrew Racette, MD, who has been using Sun Chlorella products for years, as well as recommending them to his patients. Bonus: Chlorella is believed to promote healthier hair, too.

The Truth Behind Multivitamins – LA Canyon News
Posted: at 11:51 pm
UNITED STATESMany people believe that multivitamins are key to improving health, reduces your risks of chronic diseases, and can compensate for a poor diet or bad eating habits. However, you might start to wonder whether or not these supposed advantages are true.
What are Multivitamins?
Multivitamins are supplements that are packed with various vitamins and minerals. Sometimes, it is even mixed with other ingredients. Moreover, a multivitamins nutrient composition tends to vary by product or brand. This is because there is no universal standard that helps determine what a multivitamin should contain.
Multivitamins are also known as multimineral, multiples, multis, or just vitamins. You can see them in different forms, such as capsules, tablets, powders, liquids, and chewable gummies. Besides that, they can be bought in pharmacies, supermarkets, large discount stores, and also online.
There are 13 vitamins and a minimum of 16 minerals that are essential to your health. Most of them function as signaling structural elements or molecules or aid enzyme reactions. Furthermore, your body also needs these nutrients for growth, reproduction, regulation of bodily processes, and maintenance.
Multivitamins might offer a lot of these vitamins and minerals your body needs. However, it may come in different forms and amounts. They might also contain other ingredients such as amino acids, herbs, and fatty acids.
Do You Need to Take Multivitamins?
For some, taking a multivitamin can be beneficial. They can be good for you if you belong to the following cases:
Risk factors or certain diseases might make you more susceptible to mineral or vitamin deficiencies. Hence, the need for multivitamins. These include people who suffer from anemia and osteoporosis.
Some medications can exhaust essential nutrients, and the effects can . An example of this is heart medications. Those who take these kinds of medications can take advantage of multivitamins to make up for lost vitamins and minerals.
If you are a picky eater and most of what you are eating is low in nutrients, taking multivitamins might be a good idea. Having a poor diet means you wont get the required amount of vitamins and minerals to stay healthy. However, it is still best to eat right since a multivitamin is only a supplement.
Some people are prone to having nutrient deficiencies. An example of them is the elderly, menstruating women, and pregnant women. Moreover, those who love to workout might need a multivitamin because they need more vitamins and minerals to boost their bodies.
Stress can affect your nutrient absorption and digestion, thats why taking a multivitamin is a must if you have stress.
Ingredients Your Multivitamins Should Contain
Below is the list of ingredients you should look for in multivitamins:
Vitamin D
Vitamin D aids your body in calcium absorption. This is essential to bone health. Not having enough vitamin D can increase your chances of getting sick, developing bone and back pain, or can cause bone or hair loss.
The sun is the perfect source of vitamin D. However, not all of us cant get enough of the required vitamins from sun exposure. Moreover, it is not easy to get vitamin D through your food intake.
Magnesium
Magnesium is a vital nutrient. This means we should do our best to get it from food or supplements. It plays an important role in our energy production and bone health.
Besides, this vitamin also has the following advantages:
Calcium
About 40 percent of people in our country dont get enough calcium from their diet. This means that a lot of people are not receiving the mineral they need in their bodies to get strong teeth and bones.
Zinc
Those who are low in Zinc are most likely older people or people who experience a lot of stress. Zinc helps support our immune system. It is also responsible for making our body use the fat, carbohydrates, and protein we eat to convert to energy.
Iron
Iron is recommended in your multivitamin. However, not everyone needs the same quantity of iron in their diet. Iron is great in getting better brain function, developing healthy red blood cells, and increasing our bodys energy.
Folate
Folate is also known as folic acid. It is great for preventing birth defects and aiding in fetus development. Moreover, folate is also essential for fighting depression, combating inflammation, and growing out your nails.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is a must in your multivitamins. They are responsible for keeping your blood cells and nerves healthy. Furthermore, vitamin B12 also helps in making DNA, which is the genetic component in cells.
Takeaway
Yes, multivitamins do work. However, if you are getting enough nutrients through your diet, taking one wont make sense. Furthermore, it would be best to keep in mind that multivitamins are just meant to supplement and not replace the nutrients you get from eating healthy foods.

What's more, in a small study of 73 overweight and obese women published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, EGCG was found to reduce LDL or "bad" cholesterol and increase levels of leptin, a hormone associated with satiety.

John Hood: Race theory Is dangerous nonsense Neuse News – Neuse News
Posted: at 11:50 pm
Its parent idea, critical theory, was concocted by Marxist intellectuals of the mid-20th century in the aftermath of disillusionment with revolutionary socialism as actually practiced behind the Iron Curtain. Some scholars and activists began applying their new ideas to the judicial system, yielding critical legal studies. Others concluded that prior Marxist analysis had focused too much on class at the expense of other structures of oppression, devising critical race theory (and even more narrow and esoteric applications) not only as an approach to radical scholarship but also as a guide to radical political action.
What does all this have to do with the public-policy conversation in North Carolina? Plenty unfortunately.
Do you believe in diversity, equity, and inclusion? So do I, at least when the terms are properly defined. Surrounding yourself with people of differing views and backgrounds is often good for you. It can make organizations and teams stronger. I also think people ought to be treated fairly, that they shouldnt be discriminated against based on race, ethnicity, or other characteristics that have nothing to do with performing a job well. And I think its best to include, not exclude. Dont you agree?
These beliefs are, alas, not what the current Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion movement is all about. Much of it is just critical race theory rigorously and sometimes ruthlessly applied to workplaces, government, philanthropy, and the social sector. It assumes statistical disparities must be the product of discriminatory practices and attitudes deeply embedded in our social structures. Therefore, it embraces the use of discriminatory practices and attitudes as the only proper response.
Let me explain that latter point more clearly. If disparities of outcomes are a sufficient proof of systemic racism and other forms of structural oppression, then the only way to know if the oppression has been dismantled would be for those disparities to go away. The logical goal must be an equality of results, not just an equality of opportunity. If that requires ongoing discrimination against privileged groups racial and ethnic preferences in hiring, contracting, and higher education, for example so be it.
Its all utter nonsense. Its based on simplistic and easily discredited analysis, and employs crude tools such as implicit bias tests that are both methodologically unsound and highly destructive of real human relationships.
Still, Id pay little attention to critical race theorists if they confined their nonsense to scarcely read journals and sparsely attended classes. In a free society, we all have an equal right to be very, very wrong.
But critical race theory has now spread far beyond the cloister. Its advocates seek to transform corporate governance, our justice system, and the curriculum of our public schools. Its assumptions are incompatible with freedom, liberal education, and equality under the law. Those assumptions must be fully revealed, clearly understood, and relentlessly opposed.

Turkey’s top diplomat embarks on fence-mending visit to Riyadh | | AW – The Arab Weekly
Posted: at 11:49 pm
ANKARA - Turkeys foreign minister arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday for talks aimed at overcoming a years-long diplomatic rift.
Mevlut Cavusoglu was due to hold talks in the kingdom after years of tensions between the two regional powers, which are also at odds over Turkish support for Qatar in a dispute with its Gulf neighbours and over President Tayyip Erdogans backing of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is banned in Saudi Arabia.
Turkish officials had said Cavusoglus visit could include talks on possible sales of Turkish drones to Saudi Arabia, which they said Riyadh had requested. The current violent clashes in Jerusalem may also overshadow the bilateral talks.
In Saudi Arabia to discuss bilateral relations and important regional issues, especially the attacks at the Al Aqsa Mosque and the oppression against the Palestinian people, Cavusoglu wrote on Twitter upon his arrival in Saudi Arabia.
Qatars emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, also visited Saudi Arabias Jeddah on Monday evening and met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz to discuss bilateral ties and regional and international matters of common interest.
Qatar has close relations with Turkey and may be facilitating the latters talks with Riyadh, after the two Gulf countries reached in January a breakthrough in a three-year-old dispute. A statement issued by the emirs office did not give further details.
More than 300 Palestinians were wounded on Monday, the Palestinian Red Crescent said, as Palestinian protesters threw rocks and Israeli police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets outside al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.
Later in the day, the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas said it had fired rockets into Israel, triggering warning sirens in Jerusalem and near the Gaza border, in an apparent response to the Palestinian injuries.
Erdogan said on Saturday the ongoing clashes showed Israel was a terror state, and that Ankara was working to mobilise international institutions.
On Monday he spoke to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh, state-owned Anadolu agency said.
Overcoming turbulence
Cavusoglus trip was initially intended to focus on mending bilateral ties that soured when Jamal Khashoggi a Saudi journalist was killed in Istanbul in 2018.
Erdogan said at the time the order to kill Khashoggi came from the highest levels of the Saudi government a charge Saudi Arabia rejects. Ankara tried to exploit the case politically as much as it could to the displeasure of Saudi Arabia.
The crisis prompted an unofficial Saudi trade boycott which slashed the value of Turkish imports by 98%. Saudi Arabia is also closing eight Turkish schools in the kingdom, Anadolu reported last month.
Cavusoglus two-day visit follows Turkeys talks last week with Egypt, another US-allied regional power, also aimed at repairing troubled relations.
Though Turkey is apparently seeking to improve ties with Saudi Arabia, political analysts argue Ankara is following a set of contradictory approaches in its relationship with Riyadh.
While displaying intent to surmount the legacy of past problems, Ankara is still trying to impose its regional policies.
Turkey has given its support for Gulf reconciliation and which it hoped would provide it with an opportunity to return to the region through the front door. But it has not taken any tangible steps to show good faith, whether at the political level nor in the media, nor especially on the ground through its network of relations in Yemen or the Horn of Africa.
Turkish support for groups and militias linked to the Muslim Brotherhood is one of the factors that have hindered the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement. This support has not eased tensions within Yemens legitimacy camp and flies in the face of the Saudi plan to speed a Yemeni political settlement that ensures Riyadhs national security and curtails Iranian influence in the strategic region.
According to media reports, Turkey supports the continuation of chaos in Yemen until it secures a strategic foothold for itself in the region.
Ankara has also enhanced its intelligence presence in the region by sending security officers under various covers, including humanitarian missions, such as working for the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation.
The matter does not stop at Yemen nor at obstructing a political settlement there that would enable Riyadh to exit with the least possible damage. Turkish activities blocking the interests of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries have become more obvious in the Horn of Africa, with a focus on securing positions in Somalia and Djibouti.
Last year, Saudi businessmen endorsed an unofficial boycott of Turkish goods in response to what they called hostility from Ankara, slashing the value of trade by 98%.
A senior Turkish official said that the trade embargo and the conflicts in Syria and Libya would be discussed with the Saudis as Cavusoglu visits Riyadh. A Saudi request for Turkish armed drones may also be on the agenda, two Turkish officials said.
Erdogan said in March Saudi Arabia sought to buy Turkish armed unmanned aerial vehicles. Several countries have shown interest in the drones, which were used in conflicts in Syria, Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh.
A foreign diplomat in Riyadh said the Saudis wanted to use Turkish drones against Iran-aligned Houthi militias in Yemen, and would discuss buying Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones.

The War on Medicaid Expansion Exposes the Nihilism of the GOP – The New Republic
Posted: at 11:48 pm
Last August, Missouri voters made themselves perfectly clear when they voted to expand the states Medicaid program, passing a ballot measure with 53 percent of the vote. It was just the latest in a series of recent victorious expansion campaigns in red-leaning states, including Maine, Oklahoma, Idaho, and Utah, aimed at plugging a gaping hole in the Affordable Care Act created by the Supreme Court. While the high courts 54 ruling in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius was, in 2012, hailed as a victory for upholding the legality of the individual mandate, there was less attention paid to what turned out to be a far more consequential caveat: that the choice of whether to extend Medicaid eligibility to cover all residents below 138 percent of the federal poverty line would be left to individual states. Several Republican-run states used their newfound leverage to win concessions from the federal government, such as lifetime benefit caps or monthly premiums that were never supposed to be part of a public safety net program intended for vulnerable patients. Many other states under GOP control took a more destructive path, refusing to change their Medicaid eligibility requirements at all and stranding some four million people without insurance; this included more than 200,000 Missourians.
Ironically, nearly a decade after the Sebelius ruling, we have come to understand that the individual mandate barely mattered at all to the law, and that Medicaid expansion accounted for far greater gains in insurance rates than tinkering with the individual market produced. We also have years worth of research on the tremendous impact Medicaid has on patients lives: Enrollees were able to access and use more necessary care; their health outcomes improved; and they experienced greater financial, professional, food, and housing security. This smorgasbord of quality-of-life gains was remarkable enough to win over large margins of the countrys most ostensibly conservative voters.
In Missouri, that may not be enough. The state Senate has voted 20 to 14 against funding the winning measure, effectively punting the issue to the courts to determine whether a cut-and-dry referendum ought to be acknowledged. Youd be hard-pressed to find a purer distillation of the Republican Partys nihilistic political project anywhere in the country.

Fried Barry Review: The Most Demented Movie of the Year Has Arrived – ComicBook.com
Posted: at 11:48 pm
Fried Barry is deranged, repulsive, juvenile, borderline pornographic, and one of the most memorable, visually arresting, and unique movies Ive seen in ages. Hailing from music video director Ryan Kruger, the film tells the disgusting yet riveting story of a junkie in South Africa whose body is taken for a joy ride by an extraterrestrial through the nihilistic world he calls home. For most of its run time, Fried Barry is not a movie where an alien learns to love life from its human host; in fact, it is the antithesis of any wholesome alien/human narrative you can picture. A sliver of decency is found within the climax, naturally, with the nihilism only being everything preceding it, but the momentum of Fried Barry's narrative thrust is depravity, and I couldn't not watch it.
To describe Fried Barry without spoiling its contents is an impossibility, and a disservice to those with the constitution and willingness to view its mad genius. In simple terms, its like a drug-fueled descent into the heart of darkness, but Fried Barry feels steeped in the bananas art that influenced it. Simply put, its as if Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Crank, and Mandy were ground up into a powder, snorted through a straw made from the tunnel scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and into the nose of Under the Skin.
The film exposes itself from frame one, carrying the billing of A Ryan Kruger Thing in its opening titles, which prompts the question that this isn't simply a movie -- it's an experience, a night out in the clubs that becomes a nightmare at every corner. A cavalier and wanton disregard for anything sensible, the film is powered by Kruger's vision but piloted by the tremendous work of star Gary Green, who delivers the best alien-in-a-human-body performance since Vincent D'Onofrio in Men in Black.
With his first starring role, Green delivers an iconic style of movement and dead-pan comedy that delights, horrifies, and constantly feels fresh. Green is offered a brief moment of playing the actual Barry, a burnt-out ne'er-do-well with few prospects in life and seemingly no bottom to fall into, and though this set-up is necessary for what is to come, it's not where he's at his best. Once possessed, though, Green personifies this being in a man's skin with layers, contorting his face into unnatural positions and bringing a physicality that makes him seem like a master of the art.
Fried Barry is like watching something you know that you shouldnt be seeing. A television flipping channels at three in the morning between the mad programming that only appeals to anyone else who is awake at this hour, be they sober or impaired. It's dirty, nihilistic, perverted, and not for the squeamish, but those willing to buckle up and endure its boundary-defying absurdity will find something that's never not entertaining.
Under no circumstances can I recommend that everyone watch Fried Barry; its sure to offend and its frenetic style of insanity is not for all palettes, but I found it to be one of the most compelling examples of the limits of filmmaking and bad taste in years. Director and co-writer Ryan Kruger has a brain we must cherish, a style that feels fresh, and a sensibility that will make him infamous, while star Gary Green is destined to become a cult icon. Fried Barry defies all the odds by being its own type of animal, and then mutilating that animal in front of the audience.
Rating: 5 out of 5
Fried Barry will premiere on Shudder Friday, May 7th.
