Im childfree even though Id make a great mother, because America is no place to raise a kid – The Independent

Posted: May 9, 2021 at 12:06 pm

When I was eight years old, I sat down to watch the evening news with my parents and learned that a little boy of the same age had died of an infection which spread to his blood. The infection began with a dental cavity. His mom had tearfully explained to the media how she couldnt afford the $80 it would have cost her at that time the late eighties to have a dentist treat her son. The child died thanks to what, with proper care, should have been nothing more than a brief medical inconvenience requiring a shot of Novocain followed by a smiley-face sticker and orders to lay off the candy.

Ive long wondered how those parents endured that trauma. If I had to guess, Id say my reservations about one day becoming a parent began the moment I learned that, in America, it is possible to die of something as brutally mundane, common and reversible as tooth decay.

At forty years old, I now have a million and one reasons for remaining staunchly childfree. Frankly, the recent handwringing around our declining birthrate down to a 42-year low, according to the CDC is pointless when you fail to consider the truth about what it is to be American. Because no, it isnt just the pandemic which caused this.

I grew up in a working-class family who lived hand-to-mouth. My parents were teenagers when they had me and my sister; they worked for New York City as manual laborers until their backs, discs, and muscles literally gave out from underneath them. Like many American families, we were never more than a small emergency away from financial ruin.

Living in a society that cares little to nothing about its average person showed me from an early age that having children was risky business too risky for me to ever consider having my own (even though I could now very much afford to). I wouldnt know how to prepare a child for a life of outsized risk and pain brought about by cruel politics, inhumane policies, and an ethos of toxic individualism that allows a child to die for $80.

Conversations about the declining birthrate have been pegged to a lack of parental support, the high cost of medical care, and the inequitable division of labor in the home, as well as the ever-present specter of Covid. But such arguments feel incomplete. Because in a country still contending with and healing from Trump, with a dangerously conservative Supreme Court, and in a time whenherd immunity may as well be considered a pipe dreamdue mostly to willful ignorance, the pearl-clutching around fewer babies suggests that people are deciding against parenthood for practical purposes, and not for reasons stemming from profound trauma.

I vividly remember the state of my mental health during the last presidential election, and how it took nearly one week to learn that America was going to be given the gift of Trumps departure. This news was followed by two full months of live-streamed litigation, topped with a violent insurrection. I looked at my spouse and asked, Is this a new precedent? Are we supposed to endure this every four years? I dont think I can handle that. I spoke with a (childfree) friend whod said shed lost weight, unable to eat while the nation waited to learn of its fate.

Right before this, we watched as a religious zealot the second in as many years was gifted one of the highest seats in the country, mere days after Ruther Bader Ginsburgs death. I was nearly sick with fear for the women and girls with decades of reproductive decision-making ahead of them.

And now we remain at war with a deadly disease and those unwilling to do their part to eradicate it. For more than a year, people have listened as bad actors at all levels of society promulgated discourse and propaganda that loudly encouraged Americans all of us to care as little for each other as humanly possible. We are told that refusing masks and vaccines is a personal choice, when the reality is that, of course, it is a choice which impacts everyone.

Perhaps our historically low birthrates might be owed not to practicalities, but to the fact that people are finally paying attention. If ever I were at risk of reconsidering the status of my womb, the last four years and all they wrought would have snuffed out any thought of parenthood like a flame to water.

In truth, I think Id be a great mom. But Im ill-equipped to raise a child in a country far more unforgiving than even the cruel one I grew up in.I could not, in good conscience, pass that legacy on to a child who deserves so much better than America is prepared to give.

Does Freedom of Speech Exist – Emerging Media – Loyola …

Posted: at 12:05 pm

When the first Amendment was put into place freedom of speech was born, we were all given the right to express any opinion without censorship or restraint. Being able to let

words roll off of your tongue without having to second guess your thoughts could possibly be one of the greatest perks of living in America. Although we are free to say what we want, we are not allowed to express any opinion that offends, threatens, or insults groups, based on race, color, religion, national orientation, or disability (hate speech). Does freedom of speech apply online if we are given limitations? Is there a way to compromise? Has the line of protecting users with censorship and still allowing individuals to express themselves freely become smudged?

Social media has become a one stop shop for many; keeping up with current events, celebrity gossip, a journal, a tool to grow business and most importantly a sanctuary where the first amendment could be utilized as a shield protecting them from the consequences of their words. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter have made a more conscious effort to regulate the content posted on their platform. According to an CBS News article, this summer Facebook released a list of guidelines that go into how something qualifies as a Trending Topic causing a few eyebrows to be raised due to the notion that their tactics are biased toward controversial stories and posts. Later Facebook also received backlash for banning a Vietnam war image due their regulations on pornography, later having to backtrack their decision stating: Because of its status as an iconic image of historical importance, the value of permitting sharing outweighs the value of protecting the community by removal, so we have decided to reinstate the image on Facebook where we are aware it has been removed (The Verge). Facebook has the potential to become one of the worlds biggest source for news and their strong stance of censorship could affect what users have access to. Last month Facebook wanted to ban Donald Trump from their network due to violation but Marc Zuckerberg stepped in with the fear that these actions would be distributive during the election although it was clear that some of his content could be considered hate speech. Does being an electoral candidate hold you to different standards on social media? Is it up to social media applications to control what ideas are censored? How do administrators create polices that do not impose on others rights while still maintaining an overall positive user experience?

Of course it is important for platforms to monitor for child pornography, harassment, online bullying, and overall hate speech but how do they create a perfect balance. It is important for users to be able to utilize social media as a safe haven and not feel as if they will be demonized for expressing their views as long as it does not make another feel threatened. Easier said than done? In order for this to be done properly social media sites must find a reasonable compromise, giving users a platform to safely express their views without fear of punishment.

Twitter might have found the recipe. In October users came across a muted words feature on Twitter (The Next Web) This option allowed users to create a list of unwanted words and phrases that they did not want to see on their timeline still leaving them available for others to see. Sources expressed that this feature was released prematurely and would be released in the future with an update. After doing my research it has not be fully explained how this will work but it seems that this addition to Twitter could be what all social media needs to keep the peace.

Opinion: The past year has underscored the need for vigilance in defending the First Amendment – Poynter

Posted: at 12:05 pm

The tumultuous events of the past year have highlighted the First Amendments vital role as a pillar of American democracy. They have also underscored the need for vigilance in defending it.

Journalists coverage of these events the pandemic, the nationwide protests denouncing police killings of Black Americans and supporting racial justice, and the bitterly contested presidential election and its aftermath has put renewed focus on the protection of freedom of the press.

Attacks by law enforcement on protesters and journalists have brought to prominence two other First Amendment protections: freedom of speech and the right to peaceably assemble. Freedom of speech is also at the center of ongoing debates over controversial speakers on college campuses and the role of social media companies in limiting or blocking hate speech and disinformation on their platforms.

Now, the initial amendment to the U.S. Constitution is being tested on multiple fronts:

Because of these and other factors, understanding the First Amendments role in protecting key freedoms is now especially important.

Expression by speakers across the ideological spectrum is facing actual or threatened suppression by not only government officials, but also other powerful societal forces, from tech giants to social media mobs, Nadine Strossen, an expert on constitutional law and a former president of the American Civil Liberties Union, told me. No matter who we are, no matter what we believe, we all have a stake in ensuring meaningful free speech for everyone.

This starts with knowing the rights and freedoms that the amendment protects. A 2019 survey by the Freedom Forum Institute found that only 1% of Americans could name all five: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the right to peaceably assemble and the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. More than a quarter (29%) could not name a single one.

Asked about the First Amendments language at her Supreme Court confirmation hearing last year, even Amy Coney Barrett nominated to fill the seat long held by Ruth Bader Ginsburg was unable to cite the right to petition the government.

It extends to knowing what the amendment covers and what it does not.

The First Amendment is frequently invoked in discussions of online speech. While it states that Congress shall make no law that infringes on the protections it cites, it says nothing about private companies, such as Facebook or Twitter, curating content on their platforms and restricting speech that they deem harmful.

As a result, support for it should never be taken for granted.

The future of the First Amendment seems uncertain. So does the underlying reality of public opinion in this area and its trajectory moving forward. That was the conclusion of High School Student Views of the First Amendment, a 2019 report commissioned by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that summarized the findings of seven national surveys of U.S. high school students from 2004 to 2018. A Knight survey of college students, published in 2020, found that students today are less inclined than their recent predecessors to view First Amendment freedoms as secure in society.

Why? Heres one reason: Court decisions that are often the most important for example, whether displaying a swastika is a form of free speech or whether speakers should be permitted to share offensive views on college campuses may be challenging for many to understand.

This makes it imperative that the First Amendment be taught in schools as the bedrock of the countrys commitment to individual rights and responsibilities and a core part of civics education.

As Strossen told me, The only secure protection for free speech is a public that understands its importance and therefore defends it.

TheNews Literacy Project, a nonpartisan national education nonprofit, provides programs and resources for educators and the public to teach, learn and share the abilities needed to be smart, active consumers of news and information and equal and engaged participants in a democracy.

To celebrate the 30 anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched a tool that lets you find out which celestial object the Hubble Space Telescope captured on your birthday. The space telescope works 24x7 keeping its watchful eye on the universe. It was on 24 April 1990, that the space telescope was launched and was released into space the very next day. It has changed our understanding of the universe and the world of astronomy has never been the same.

Unencumbered by the clouds, Hubble and by extension, scientists have a clear view of the universe and all it has to offer. It is to observe some of the most distant stars and galaxies along with the planets in our solar system.

The Hubble Space Telescope has completed 30 years in space. Image courtesy: NASA

The user only needs to select the date and month of their birth from the drop-down list and click submit. For eg., if your birthday is 8 December, Hubble saw the remnant of Supernova 1987A which is a stellar explosion in a nearby galaxy witnessed by astronomers in 1987. It glows because a shock wave of material unleashed by the stellar blast formed a ring of gas around it.

You can click here to find the tool.

Earlier this week, NASA had released a celebratory image of one of the brightest stars in our galaxy. It is named AG Carinae and located approximately 20,000 light-years away. As per the American space agency, stars like AG Carinae are among the biggest in the cluster.

Not just that, NASA has been regularly sharing spectacular images on its social media handles that have been captured by the telescope. According to NASA, the Hubble can detect objects like seeing a pair of fireflies in Tokyo that are less than 10 feet apart from Washington.

The Houston Astros were back in New York for the first time since the sign-stealing scandal and Yankees fans let them have it – Golf Digest

Posted: at 12:04 pm

Short of the Los Angeles Dodgerswho have since won an asterisk World Series of their ownno team remains more butthurt about the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal than the New York Yankees. The Yankees lost two ALCS to the Astros in a three-year span, including in 2017, widely believed to be the big sign-stealing year, and the already-fragile psyche of the Bronx Bomber fanbase never fully recovered. On Tuesday night, however, they finally got an opportunity for some closure, as the Houston Astros headed to Yankee Stadium for the first time since the scandal exploded during the 2019-20 offseason, and needless to say, they did not let it go to waste.

Things started off, unsurprisingly, with a grown man dressed in a full Oscar the Grouch costume under the pretense of banging a trash can (whatever helps you sleep at night, buddy) . . .

. . . and only descended from there, as Alex Bregman hit an above-board first-inning homer to really sour the mood.

That warmed up the pipes out in the bleachers just in time for the Fk Altuve chants, who in addition to a World Series championship, also won the 2017 MVP over Aaron Judge.

This young woman decided to leave Altuve out of it entirely, opting for a simple you! instead. You have to love the brevity.

There were a few last-minute signs you couldnt read with the Hubble telescope standing three feet away . . .

. . . plus some more Oscar the Grouch tomfoolery . . .

. . . which, of course, eventually led to the confiscation of the fake trash cans clogging the concourse.

Much to the delight of the Yanks faithful, however, the Pinstripes ran out 7-3 winners, improving their record to an MLB-best 10-4 over the last 14 games. All in all, just another Tuesday night in the Bronx.

How automation is key to cloud-native application security – ITProPortal

Posted: at 12:03 pm

Implementing automated security procedures has very quickly become a necessity at companies deploying software at scale to the cloud. Understanding the why, what and how of this might allow organizations to make better decisions on cloud security - and facilitate better, secure applications.

Modern, cloud-first organizations move at a breathtakingly fast pace. Larger organizations might make deployments several thousand times a day, while the number of code changes might come to the hundreds of thousands over the same period.

Adding to this, technology-centric companies might employ hundreds of developers: it becomes extremely difficult in these circumstances to track and understand every project, or follow exactly what theyre doing. This speed and volume of operations has meant that security procedures devised for earlier times, when the security team would inspect and test code prior to deployment, are no longer functional or practical.

Following the successful adoption of DevOps, we have now entered the era of DevSecOps, in which security teams shift focus to empowering developers to build more securely, and where developers assume responsibility for secure code, built on secure foundations, in securely configured cloud environments.

If this sounds like a whole lot of extra work, it is compounded by the fact that only around 20 percent of the code in a typical cloud application is unique to that application, the rest comprising Linux operating system files, open source libraries, their dependencies and other inherited elements. Developers need more help to identify any potential vulnerabilities in applications, their broader codebase and their configurations. A highly sophisticated security toolset needs to be assisted through automation.

This automation can take a number of forms, and the first steps into this arena will depend upon what is practical for an organization, and its key pain points. Probably the first step is to ensure the application and its components are scanned for vulnerabilities automatically at set intervals. As a Senior Security Engineer at an American cloud communications platform-as-a-service company says: Automation is the key to building security at scale, because it eliminates human error. When we automate, we catch more vulnerabilities. Humans need to remember to scan under normal circumstances, and for even the most disciplined teams, that creates a potential point of weakness, plus it is an extra job that doesnt need to exist if automation is already in place.

The team at the aforementioned cloud communications company has taken this species of automation a step further. They have created a GitHub app which leverages the tools API to monitor the main branch of the companys application for changes and pull requests. When a pull request is merged to main, it automatically imports the project for scanning. It also reacts when projects are created, deleted or renamed, triggering the appropriate security actions. It is great that the company has now open-sourced the tool, allowing others to benefit from its innovation.

At a major online travel agency, visibility into the existence of unmitigated vulnerabilities was a particular concern. The organization was experiencing the symptoms of rapid development at scale noted earlier, and needed to create automated assistance. One of its leading software engineers noted: Manually reviewing [code and configurations] would just be a nightmare at the scale were operating at. The company decided to build its own dashboard application to provide developers and managers the visibility they needed into security across projects using API calls to gather information from its security tools.

The need for assistance with pipeline flow was what led an American media company to create its own internal application, which detects new container images via Cloudtrail, scans them for vulnerabilities and uses its security tools API to get the results and processes that information to create Jira tickets for the relevant teams and developers. The companys director of platform engineering says the business works with thousands of container images, and up to 7000 code repositories. Only through automating as much of the workflow as possible could it feel confident that risks were being consistently spotted and mitigated.

As organizations continue to automate, several considerations must be applied in order to achieve the very best results. The first of these might well affect the overall choice of security tools and is the adaptability of the tools you wish to automate. The availability of a powerful and well-documented API might not always seem like a priority when decisions are being made, but will empower the creation of security automation tools which work exactly as the organization needs. For other organizations, typically those with smaller teams, the availability of an SDK native to their programming language of choice will be an absolute necessity.

A second key point, highlighted by the director of platform engineering at the media company, when the company developed its own internal application, is to carefully consider the results of automation. If a scan might conceivably detect thousands of vulnerabilities, then simply creating tickets for all of them could quickly create a log jam of low level jobs and a very frustrated development team. Instead, the system filters out vulnerabilities which are unfixable or which cannot be exploited, and prioritizes tasks according to how much impact they will make on the security of the application. The system also makes it far easier for developers to work through tickets, offering advice on the availability of patches as well as links to documentation describing the nature of the vulnerability.

A last point about automation projects is to be sure to always remember the goal is to make life as easy as possible. Creating new processes, new tools to work with or hoops to jump through may be a retrograde step. Wherever possible, aim to use the tools your developers already work with on a daily basis, whether thats through their IDE, repositories or ticketing systems. When automation enables security without increasing friction, then thats the ideal combination organizations should work towards.
