Is SpaceX Really Worth $74 Billion? Forbes – Forbes

Elon Musks privately held rocket company SpaceX raised around $1.16 billion via equity funding over the last two months per SEC filings, with the company now reportedly being valued at $74 billion. This compares to a previous valuation of $46 billion based on a $2 billion fundraise last August. So what has really changed for SpaceX to command a 60% jump in valuation?

There is an increasing shift from government-driven space programs toward enterprise-backed programs and SpaceX has a nice track record of winning contracts from government agencies, particularly from NASA and the U.S Department of Defense. Starlink, the companys satellite-based Internet service - which we see as a big driver of SpaceXs long-term potential - went into beta testing a few months ago and should start generating revenues this year. (related Starlink Valuation: What Could SpaceXs Starlink Service Be Worth) We also expect SpaceXs total number of launches to grow this year, with total revenue expanding to about $1.6 billion. Moreover, new areas such as space travel and point-to-point transport around the earth are also on SpaceXs radar and could help revenues in the medium to long term.

There are likely some market-related factors driving SpaceXs valuation as well. With interest rates still remaining low compared to historical levels, investors have a greater appetite to bet on futuristic companies working on the cutting-edge and moonshot projects. This is likely helping SpaceX. Moreover, investors likely view SpaceX as a solid play on the emerging space economy. Although there are other publicly listed plays on Space, SpaceX has a strong record of innovation and execution, having the distinction of carrying out the first commercial manned launch, while raising the bar for reusable rocket technology.

[2/2/2021] How Is SpaceXs Starlink Service Shaping Up?

SpaceXs satellite-based Internet business, Starlink, is seen as the biggest driver of the space exploration companys valuation, given its large addressable market. (Related: SpaceXs Revenues and Valuation) So how is the service shaping up? Starlink went into beta testing about four months ago, providing services in the northern United States, Canada, and some parts of Europe and the company says that it now has over 10,000 users globally. SpaceX charges beta customers $99 per month, and theres also an upfront charge of about $500 that goes towards the satellite dish and related kit. The company is reporting speeds of between 50 to 150 Mega bits per second on the service. While this makes Starlinks service pricier and slower than some mainstream broadband offerings, both metrics are likely to improve as the company builds scale (more satellites and ground stations) and signs on more users. The company has already launched over 1,000 working satellites for Starlink and intends to have a total of around 42k satellites once the project is complete. SpaceX was recently awarded close to $900 million in subsidies by the FCC, under the Rural Digital Opportunities Fund which aims to bring high-speed Internet across the U.S., particularly in rural areas. This could also help the economics of the service, to a certain extent. That said, competition is also mounting. Wireless carriers have been betting big on 5G technology which can offer gigabit-speed internet over wide areas, competing head-on with the fixed-line internet services. It remains to be seen if SpaceXs service can offer customers an attractive value proposition as competition increases.

According to Wu Weiren, one of the leaders of the Chinese lunar research program, the two devices should be 15 billion kilometers from Earth by 2049. This is 100 times the distance from Earth to the sun. The centenary of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China will be celebrated in 2049.

Initial plans for the Chinese Interstellar Express have already been submitted, but in an interview with China Space News this week, Wu said the mission is now officially part of the new five-year plan for Chinese space travel.

This is just going to happen, says Mark Klein Wolt, an astronomer from Nijmegen, who previously conducted a Dutch radio experiment on a Chinese satellite. If China says it will do something, it will. It is completely in line with their ambitious policy.

Space race

China is participating in a geopolitical space race with the United States. After a successful moon landing, plans are now underway to establish a manned lunar base with Russia. A Chinese robotic car is due to land on Mars next month, and its space station is under preparation.

The two identical probes on the Interstellar Express will close close to the solar system in opposite directions. Theyll basically measure the interaction of the solar wind the electrically charged particles that the sun blows into space with the extremely thin matter of interstellar space.

Just like the American Voyager space probes 40 years ago, Chinese aircraft first fly over Jupiter or Saturn, where they are accelerated by the giant planets gravity. One is also to fly through the distant planet Neptune in the year 2038. It was examined closely only once before, in 1989 by Voyager 2.

In Chinese Space News, Wu described the project as Chinas contribution to the world and to humanity. Kline and Walt interested anyway. Who knows, we might also be able to turn a radio antenna on this.

When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. Erik Lindbergh: Right Now is the ‘Most Exciting Time’ in Aviation – ERAU News

For Erik Lindbergh, whose grandfather Charles Lindbergh famously piloted the first-ever nonstop flight from New York to Paris, charting unknown territory comes naturally.

Instead of flying over the Atlantic Ocean, however, his aspirations have evolved to meet modern challenges. Namely, he aims to popularize electric air travel.

Electric propulsion is the future of transportation most every form of transportation, he said, in a recent Aviation Outlook virtual event, noting that the technology still has a way to go before it is perfected. The biggest issue in electric flight is the amount of energy you can pull out of a battery. So we saw there was a huge market.

Through his company, VerdeGo Aero, which provides powertrain systems and engineering services to the emerging electric aircraft industry, and is a partner in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Universitys Research Park, Lindbergh attempts to meet that market demand through a phased approach.

Hybrid is really what we see as the bridge to full electric, he said. This is how were going to get to market.

For example: during takeoff and for thrust, use gas; the rest of the time, go electric.

If we want to see aviation become clean and quiet and sustainable, we need to invest in it, he added, noting that the same is true for space travel. We need to develop this technology.

For Lindbergh, challenging the status quo is key to seeing continued growth in the aerospace and aviation sectors, and it was the core concept behind his grandfathers transatlantic flight.

Before my grandfather flew across the Atlantic, people who flew in airplanes were called barnstormers and daredevils, and they often lost their lives in that pursuit, he said. After he flew across the Atlantic, people who flew in airplanes were called pilots and passengers. It was a shift in the worlds perspective about what airplanes can be used for.

Within six months of that historic flight, the number of pilots in America tripled, Lindbergh added. The number of licensed aircraft quadrupled. And pre-pandmic, more than 1,300 flights were traveling across the Atlantic daily.

Hyper-aware of the impact his grandfather had on the world, Lindbergh said that the lesson of that famous flight has guided most of his adult life including when he piloted his own solo trip across the Atlantic.

He remembered a moment during his flight when the communication systems shut down, and the quiet gave him time to take in his surroundings, time for contemplation. And it was just then, he said, that he felt most connected not only to the world but also to his grandfather.

I realized I was cradled in the same sky he was, he said. And he thought about how much more difficult his grandfathers flight must have been, using more primitive controls, much less communication and an unproven aircraft. (His flight) was a breakthrough moment in history, showing the world really what was possible.

That concept pushes him every day to uncover what other innovations might be possible, which is why in 1996 he helped launched the XPRIZE Foundation, which awarded a $10 million prize to the first successful privately manned space mission. That prize contributed to jumpstarting the commercial space industry we see today.

Were living in the most exciting time that Ive ever seen in aviation, he said. What weve seen in the electric propulsion side is that its moving faster than ever. Its actually moved faster during the pandemic. We have seen tremendous growth.

It looks like the busiest season ever for campsites but there should be space for everyone – Telegraph.co.uk

Spring has sprung, and its a bit springier than usual. The birds are singing with extra chirp, cherry blossom trees are bright with bloom, and buds are bursting open with a flourish. The annual opening of the natural world is enhanced this year by our own national reopening, as bars, restaurants and shops come back to life. As the bank holiday weekends race towards us with the promise of newfound fun and freedom, one sector of the hospitality industry has an extra-bullish bounce: camping is set for a breakout year.

Campsite owners across the country are busy cleaning, repairing and sprucing their campsites to be ready for what looks set to be the biggest UK camping season on record. Theres an expectant buzz in the air, as bookings are bounding in like never before. On the Cool Camping website alone, bookings are up by over 500 per cent this year compared with 2019, so the buzz is very real, with a new wave of holidaymakers set to embrace UK camping for the first time this season. Admittedly, uncertainty around foreign travel has added to the staycation surge, and the interest in camping in particular.

The fact that a UK camping holiday can cost less than pre-travel Covid tests for all the family must surely be a factor in peoples minds as they cost out the options. And then theres the traffic light system. Being stuck in expensive hotel quarantine when the traffic lights suddenly change is not the dream end to any holiday. Removing that possibility makes everything less stressful.

So a domestic camping trip is the answer for many of us this year. It certainly seems that the nation cant wait to find freedom among the woodlands and fields not surprising given the confines within which life has operated for so long. The pleasure of being outdoors is now appreciated fully, when previously it might have been taken for granted. The inevitable result is that camping is on the cusp of a boom. People want out, and theyre busy booking up their personal slice of fresh-air-filled happiness.

Thankfully, there should be plenty of space for everyone, as the increase in demand has been accompanied with a similarly vast explosion in places to camp. Planning regulations have been relaxed on temporary pop-up sites, allowing them to open for longer without a full campsite licence, thus making them viable for more land owners.

Hundreds of these pop-up sites will be dotting our great landscape with camping pitches and boutique bell tents, opening up incredible, scenic places for campers to enjoy. Farms, stately homes even schools and rugby clubs are all making use of the opportunity to host campers. Many will be offering simple pitches and basic facilities for bring-your-own-tent campers, but others involve larger operators who are known for providing glamping accommodation at festivals, now redirecting their tents and expertise to offer luxury holidays in places around the UK.

Its not just pop-ups on offer, either. The past year has seen an increase in applications for new campsite licences, as land owners pivot their businesses to match a renewed interest in camping. Some have also been able to secure government grants to invest in building more permanent structures, such as treehouses or woodland cabins as part of the Covid recovery programme.

So it seems a bigger, more permanent revolution in UK camping is under way, changing the landscape of Britain forever. This is all great news for us happy campers. We have the privilege of being able to discover and explore new corners of our countryside that have previously been out of bounds; to camp in places that have never been camped in before. Its one of the better side-effects of this pandemic, up there with extended family walks and getting to know the neighbours.

With the May long weekends coming up, its the first opportunity weve had in a while to dust off the canvas, stretch those pegs, and perhaps experience some of these new openings. The campsites are ready for us, and it looks like many of us are raring to go. Even if the roadmap to the wider post-pandemic holiday landscape is not yet clear, a canvas spring is already upon us. And I, for one, cant wait to get out there.

During the first phase of polling in the ongoing three-tier UP Panchayat Elections 2021, violence was reported from some districts. Miscreants attempted booth capturing at several polling booths. The police are meanwhile gearing up to take stern action against people involved in violence during the first phase of polling in UP Panchayat Polls.

After the violence, the Agra police has identified 50 people and action will be taken against them under the National Security Act (NSA). Apart from this, security deposit of those involved in violence will also be seized. The Agra police till now has seized an amount of about Rs one crore.

The first booth capturing incident was reported from Fatehabad area. Apart from this, ballot papers were also looted.

The second incident of booth capturing took place in Jagner area, where after during violence the miscreants entered the booth and looted the ballot box. The third major incident took place in Shamsabad area. After the panchayat elections were completed, when the polling parties were going by bus to submit the ballot box, some bikers started pelting stones on the bus. In this incident of stone pelting, many polling personnel were injured.

Agra SSP Muniraj said, Strict action is being taken against those who are involved in the violence.

Donald Trumps 757 Could Be Worth Millions On The Ground – Forbes

Since we reported last month that Donald Trump downgraded to a regular private jet, likely his Cessna Citation X, CNN tracked down his more famous VIP Boeing 757 parked at a remote airport north of New York City. Its seemingly in a state of disrepair. Very sad! Articles speculated that the 45th president either couldnt or wouldnt spend an estimated $6 million making it airworthy to carry passengers.

His least favorite cable news network slyly reasoned, Though the current state of his finances aren't public, the Covid-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the hospitality industry home to so many of his businesses.

If youre a hater, dont snicker too loudly. Without spending a nickel on repairs, Trump may well be able to turn the grounded airliner into a cash machine, generating millions of dollars per year in profits.

For months Ive been asking people who might know about the luxury jets future, once owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and before that a defunct Danish budget airline. Some thought it could end up on the charter market. VIP airliners fetch $15,000 to $40,000 per hour when rented out. Others suggested it was destined to be the centerpiece of a future presidential library. Expensive repairs seem to rule out the former. It turns out the latter wouldnt have much in the way of tax benefits and could cost 45 huge lost profits.

According to an attorney who specializes in UHNW tax strategies, the bigly issue with Trump donating his 757 to his presidential library is the way they are set-up. He says, setting up a library typically involves the outgoing president forming a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation bearing their namesake, which will be directly tied to their presidential library (i.e., the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation) or a broader charitable mission that includes funding the construction and management of the library (i.e., The Barack Obama Foundation, The Clinton Foundation, among others). All libraries dating back to Reagan's are 501(c)(3) organizations (or formed under broader 501(c)(3) organizations) for tax purposes.

In terms of valuing a potential deduction for the donation of Trumps parked airplane, the attorney references IRS guidance (Pub. 526). It states if the donor donates a qualified vehicle with a claimed fair market value in excess of $500, the donor may deduct the smaller of: the gross proceeds from the sale of the vehicle by the organization, or the vehicle's fair market value on the date of the contribution.

A memo on the subject he forwarded to me states if the fair market value is more than your cost (or other) basis, the donor may have to reduce the fair market value to arrive at the deductible amount.For property used in a trade or business that is ordinary income propertyto the extent of any gain that would have been treated as ordinary income because of depreciation had the property been sold at its fair market value at the time of contributionthe amount the donor can deduct for a contribution of such property is its fair market value minus the amount that would be ordinary income if the donor sold the property for its fair market value.

This rule limits the deduction to the donor's basis in the property. Thus, he says, if Trump now has an adjusted basis of zero dollars in the plane, any charitable deduction would also be zero dollars. If the plane had a fair market value of $5 million dollars at the time of donation, and Trump would have $5 million of ordinary income (adjusted basis of zero dollars after depreciation and all income would be ordinary), his charitable deduction would be zero dollars.

If the now Palm Beach, Florida resident contributes property with a fair market value that is less than his basis in it, the deduction is limited to fair market value. A deduction cannot be claimed for the difference between the property's basis and its fair market value, he says.

A key factor complicating a museum donation is the fair market value of Trump's plane. In its current condition, it is a difficult task with a lot of variables. It could be worth far more than its average counterpart given the history attached and its opulent interior, or it could be worth virtually nothing because it is a 30-year-old plane stuck on the runway, say experts

I think it is certainly possible, if not likely, that the fair market value of his plane is greater than his basis - after depreciation, in which case he would probably be limited to basis for purposes of a charitable deduction. However, if Trump does have a cost basis left, it's theoretically possible the plane's current fair market value is less than his adjusted basis. In that case, the deduction would likely be limited to current fair market value.

In case you are like me and are not an UHNW tax expert and dont have experience donating cars and airplanes to non-profits, the bottom line Im told by the two specialists is they dont see a financial benefit for Trump donating his 757 to his presidential library or another non-profit. They did come to the same conclusion. The former presidents acumen for marketing and sales means the jet is likely not headed for the scrap heap.

The art of the deal. With Trumps loyal MAGA followers, the aircraft could end up being a highly profitable tourist attraction. For example, grounded Concorde supersonic jet displays are popular draws. A Concorde display in Manchester, England pre-pandemic attracted 250,000 visitors per year.

One resting spot that could make sense is Las Vegas, where Trump is already partners with fellow billionaire Phillip Ruffin in a Trump International Hotel. Best friend Ruffin owns nearby Circus Circus and Treasure Island.

According to a report by Forbes, Ruffins 2019 acquisition of Circus Circus for $825 includes the Adventuredome, a five-acre indoor theme park. Tickets go for $40. In 2014, the most recent statistics we could find, it drew 3.2 million visitors.

Needless to say Vegas has an array of paid attractions with a wide range of admission fees. Access to the Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck at Paris Las Vegas starts at $22.59. The Las Vegas Mob Museum is $29.50. For $36.99 you can see artifacts of the RMS Titanic at The Luxor. The SkyJump at the Stratosphere will set you back $133 for the time it takes to plummet 829 feet.

So how much could the former president pocket by sending his 757 on a one-way flight to the entertainment capital of the world?

Flowing 1,000 visitors a day through an airplane exhibit between 10 am and 6 pm would be no problem, says one former theme park executive. Multiply that by $20 per ticket and 365 days, and you end up with $7.3 million. Trumps 757 could make money after hours as event space for private parties. Renting it out for $10,000 on 100 nights would generate another million dollars. Souvenirs, including miniatures, add more cash.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, how will Trump get the airplane to Vegas when it needs millions of dollars in repairs? One aviation insider tells us all he needs is to get a ferry flight waiver from the FAA. Its something that happens at a low level in the agency and is routine, allowing airlines and owners to fly their broken aircraft to an MRO for fixes.

If Trump partners with Ruffin, another perk could be an upgrade back to the type of VIP private jet hes used to. Ruffin related companies own at least three private jets, including a 1999 Boeing Business Jet, which Trump used during his 2016 run to The White House.

An outburst over the weekendspeaking to a room of Republican officials and donors, Trump called the most powerful elected Republican in the nation a dumb son of a bitchunderscores his fade. The speech got some attention, but not much. The time when covfefe could consume the nation for days on end is, mercifully, past.

One common theory for Trumps disappearance is that his ban from Twitter (and other social-media sites) effectively knocked out his ability to reach a wide audience. With the Twitter account at his fingertips, he could blast whatever thought or diatribe was at the top of his mind to millions of followers; the press would dutifully report on the latest outrage and the discourse around it. Adding to the credibility of the theory, Trumps eclipse seemed to begin around January 8, when Twitter announced the ban.

Trump clearly misses the feeling of tweeting and getting immediate feedback. Hes taken to emailing statementssometimes several in a dayto reporters, presumably in the hopes that theyll tweet them, but its not the same. For one thing, freed from the constraints of 280 characters, he tends to ramble into the kind of incoherence manifested at his rallies. For another, sentiments that took on some comprehensibility in the churn of social media feel disembodied and nonsensical when they land in my inbox. (Why exactly is Trump sending this statement praising Stephen Miller? Did I miss something, or did he? Or both?)

But the Twitter theory has flaws, too. Trumps tweets could still make government officials quake, but they had already begun to lose their potency by 2019. Fewer people were responding to them, and Trumps attempts to make up for that decline by simply tweeting more often further diluted the effect. The nation seemed to grow blas (for better or worse) about the presidents most outrageous remarks.

Besides, someone of Trumps fame doesnt need a Twitter account. As an insurgent presidential candidate in 2015, Trump found that the account provided a useful way to drive the conversation, even though few journalists or politicians initially took his run seriously. But by the time he was president, Trump had plenty of other ways to commandeer media attention: press conferences, formal interviews, Oval Office addresses.

Although he sometimes eschewed these methods as presidenthe didnt give an Oval Office address until almost two years into his termhes now using the ones that remain available to him. For a period beginning after the January 6 coup attempt, Trump was uncharacteristically silent, apparently heeding the advice of aides who suggested that he should keep his head down while the Senate was still considering his impeachment. Since the Senate failed to convict, Trump has been more vocal. He has continued to make public remarks, including to the Republican National Committee gathering last weekend, and has given interviews to several of his favorite cable-news outlets. Hes also given at least a dozen interviews for books about his presidency. Trump could probably get more attention if he gave an interview to a more adversarial interviewerTrump with Jake Tapper or Mary Louise Kelly, or a rematch with Chris Wallace or Lesley Stahl would surely produce fireworksbut it wasnt that long ago that a call-in to Fox & Friends was plenty newsmaking on its own.

After all, he still faces wide legal exposure including to his namesake company; left office as the only twice-impeached president; and senior members of his party blame him for inciting an insurrection. But advisors say he's taking this new chapter with a renewed zest.

Insider dove into his post-White House life at Mar-a-Lago as he mulls his political future.

2. There's hope for a bipartisan infrastructure deal, but divisions remain: Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia balked at a potential Republican plan that could range from $600 billion to $800 billion, a drastic counteroffer to Biden's $2.3 trillion package. Manchin said he would support a $4 trillion plan as long as it's paid for. Republicans continue to insist that raising corporate taxes is a "red line," andsome GOP lawmakers advocate fees to be paid by drivers.

3. 8 dead in a mass shooting in Indianapolis: Eight people were killed during a shooting at a FedEx facility near the city's airport on Thursday night. Four others were taken to local hospitals with injuries. The suspect appeared to have taken his own life. Here's what else we know.

4. Both sides rest in Derek Chauvin's murder trial. He will not take the stand: Chauvin's defense lasted only two days and focused on George Floyd's heart condition and drug use, despite multiple medical experts saying it was Chauvin's actions that killed Floyd. The jury could begin deliberations as soon as Monday.

Video shows a Chicago officer killing a 13-year-old: Video shows officer Eric Stillman chasing Adam Toledo, 13, before yelling at him to show his hands. Less than one second later, Toledo is shot as he raises his hands. An attorney for Toledo's family said the video did not immediately determine whether he was holding a gun, but said that wasn't relevant. Toledo appears to be holding something in his hand at one point, which police claim is a gun. More on the story here. (Note: The footage is in the story and is graphic.)

5. People will likely need a booster shot of Pfizer vaccine within a year: Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said the extra dose will be key in fighting COVID-19 variants. It's possible that people will need yearly shots, he said. As for Moderna, its CEO Stphane Bancel said that the drugmaker is hoping to a get booster authorized this summer and in arms before fall. 6. Washington moves of the week: Rep. Matt Gaetz promoted a former Democratic staffer who has quickly climbed the ranks in his office. Here are some of the other biggest moves this week.

Isabela Belchior, who previously worked for Democratic Rep. Sylvia Garcia, is now a legislative director for Gaetz.

Jeff Lowenstein will become staff director on the House Intelligence Committee; Patrick Boland will become chief of staff for Rep. Adam Schiff, the panel's chairman. Jonathan Carter, who previously served in Sen. Richard Blumenthal's office, is joining Tesla as a policy advisor.

7. Biden says he could have gone further with Russian sanctions, but stuck with a "proportionate" response: The US expelled 10 diplomats in retaliation for Russia's involvement in the SolarWinds hack and interference in the 2020 election. Moscow retorted that the US can expect a "decisive rebuff." More on the sanctions here.

9. Senior Democrats question expanding the Supreme Court: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she has "no plans" to bring a bill to floor that would expand the high court from 9 to 13 justices. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin of Illinois, another key leader, is also not ready to support such a step. But House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler of New York not only supports it, he's one of the bill's authors. Inside the debate here.

10. Royal drama: Prince William and Prince Harry will not walk side-by-side at their grandfather Prince Philip's funeral. Instead, their cousin will walk between them. Reports of conflict between the brothers have abounded since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey, but Buckingham Palace insists the separation was a practical change.
