Bring back the beat: Music you missed this January – Daily Trojan Online
Posted: February 2, 2021 at 7:28 pm
Its 2021. After almost an entire year of isolation and zero festivities, music brings solace to the mind and soul. An elegant melody accompanied by elaborate lyrics, occasionally adding energetic choreography and a colorful music video, music dominates the world.
Its time to forget about the physical isolation and discomfort. In the first month of a new year, why not allow yourself to fully immerse in music, be taken captive in the unlimited possibilities of lyrical wonders and heavenly harmonies?
January resonated as a fresh start for all. Lets pick up the highlights of this month.
Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo (Jan. 8, 2021)
Ready for some heartbreaking love feuds? In a time of cold isolation, we definitely need a fiery spirit of passionate love stories or breakup stories. Ranking No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200, Drivers License marked Olivia Rodrigos extraordinary debut unlike any other. Listen to this Gen Z gently recite her broken heart as she drives past the suburbs, without the guy she thought was the one.
Skin by Sabrina Carpenter (Jan. 22, 2021)
Could this be her response to the blonde girl remark in Drivers License? Beginning softly, Sabrina Carpenter doubts the gravity in the words [they] write. But she soon launches into her blinding spotlight of a life, flaunting her long career in the music industry, slashing back at haters and softly responding to the newly-licensed-teenage-driver. While graceful lyrics discreetly tackle the injustices Carpenter faced, her strong yet majestically faltering vocal cords convey a sense of pride and utmost confidence that no one can get under [her] skin.
Lie Lie Lie by Joshua Bassett (Jan. 14, 2021)
Listen to this sharp farewell to an ex-best friend from the Disney+ star of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Despite much speculation from fans and the coincidentally corresponding release dates, Joshua Bassett sings about a betrayal from a long time friend, utterly irrelevant to the love triangle. Frequently revealing snippets of this song while working on it this past year, his dedication to the lyrics and music notes appear evident in the upbeat melody of the newly released Lie Lie Lie.
De Una Vez by Selena Gomez (Jan. 14, 2021)
Selena Gomez sings from her jeweled heart about her emotional growth through intricately weaved Spanish lyrics, poetically reciting self-empowerment. Proudly establishing her Latin American heritage, she immerses heartbroken listeners with precise words of healing encouragement, enticing a sense of empathic unity and compelling independence. After all: Soy mas fuerte sola, she asserts, I am stronger on my own.
Nobody Is Listening by Zayn (Jan. 15, 2021)
It looks like the coronavirus blues penetrated the musical blues by Zayn. His sad voice weakens into mumbles in his latest album, Nobody Is Listening. Unfortunately, Zayns intuition from naming his album stands uncorrected. The dismally isolated nature of his tracklist slowly rolled off the iTunes Top 100 into Calamity before barely balancing on the Tightrope at No. 22. Perhaps it was the overlapping dismay of the times that shrouded listeners from the potentially profound intent of creating personal music. Indeed, Zayn appears proud and accomplished to release music based on his creative journey as a solo artist for the first time. Despite the harsh chart records, it is never too late to appreciate the artistic value of Zayns intimate storytelling that resonates with purpose.
The Good Times and the Bad Ones by Why Dont We (Jan. 15, 2021)
True musicians, singers, instrumentalists tune into this new album consisting of heartfelt songs personally written and composed by the band members of Why Dont We during their tour and through coronavirus outbreaks. For an honest account of the good times and the bad ones, listen to the optimistic vibes of their new playlist.
What I Said by VICTON (Jan. 11, 2021)
Voice To New World (VICTON), these former romanticists are back with piercing vocals to celebrate their fourth anniversary. Adopting a unique Latin pop sound, these K-pop idols mix in brass instruments to create a dynamic dance hit. In the music video, VICTON fills the stage with powerful choreography, proudly claiming that the future is now. All seven members worked on this perfectly potent album, reflecting their accomplishments as artists and potential as future leaders of K-pop.
Anyone by Justin Bieber (Jan. 1, 2021)
What about another sweet song for a golden 2021? The striking melody contrasts with soft lyrics dedicating his love for his wife, insisting that if its not you, its not anyone. Needless to say, the admirably pleasant nature of the lyrics address a heartfelt companion. Justin Bieber goes even further to don silk boxing shorts to fight for his love in this new music video.
Life Rolls On (Audio) by Florida Georgia Line (Jan. 15, 2021)
Is there a more wonderful way to address the times? To those anticipating the obvious, life proved unsettling after the sudden coronavirus pandemic. But as these country singers declare, the best alternative is acceptance of the highs and the lows and the yes and the nos. After all, life rolls on.

Nickelodeon superstar JoJo Siwa’s coming out is a huge deal for LGBTQ+ kids and their parents – Insider – INSIDER
Posted: at 7:28 pm
In mid-January, JoJo Siwa one of the world's biggest pop stars, with a sparkling, rainbow empire to prove it came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, posting several videos previewing the moment before making a definitive announcement.
The outpouring of support online was immediate and intense, with people online excitedly posting supportive comments, tweets, and moving personal statements.
Siwa, who is 17, felt the same: "Personally I have never, ever, ever been this happy before and it feels really awesome. I've been happy for a little bit now," she said during a Saturday Instagram livestream in which she discussed her sexuality and coming out process.
While acceptance of LGBTQ+ Americans has generally increased over the years (with some setbacksduring the later years of the Trump Administration), it still feels remarkable, and incredibly moving for many LGBTQ+ people, to see Siwa come out publicly online. Perhaps most remarkable is the swift positive response, both from her young fanbase and Nickelodeon, to which Siwa is signed.
A post shared by Nickelodeon (@nickelodeon)
The composition of Siwa's fanbase, mostly kids and their parents, means the moment is a giant leap for LGBTQ+ representation in family-oriented media, and according to queer therapists, may even help families be more accepting towards their queer children.
"For anyone walking a similar path and who shares similar struggles, she will shine a bright media spotlight and be a beacon of empowerment for the LGBT community," Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, author of "Let's Get it! Hustle and Grind Your Way to Personal Empowerment," told Insider.
Siwa isn't the first young celebrity to come out while in the spotlight: fellow celebrities and online personalities like Lil Nas X, Josie Totah, and Amandla Stenberg have all come out as part of the LGBTQ+ community as teens or young adults. Siwa is one of the latest to publicly join the community.
Her coming out is part of a larger trend in young, LGBTQ+ people and celebrities choosing to do so earlier in life, GLAAD's head of talent, Anthony Ramos, told Insider. He said that it marks a transition in the entertainment world itself in regards to celebrities coming out.
"Years ago, people were so afraid to come out, and if they did it was so much later when they got to be adults," he said. "With celebrities specifically, we've all heard the stories of that apprehension to come out in fear of not getting work. I really think that when someone like JoJo does come out publicly, it sends a message that that whole era is ending and people really want to live their most authentic life."
Nickelodeon's explicit support for Siwa on social media is a powerful signifier in its own right. The network, and all-ages programming writ large, has made leaps and bounds in LGBTQ+ representation, and support of Siwa's coming out can help erase "apprehension that it's potentially divisive or a risk" to have LGBTQ+ talent leading a program, Ramos said.
What makes Siwa's coming out feel so impactful is that, as Insider reporter Kat Tenbarge wrote on Twitter, she's "the Hannah Montana of her generation" a celebrity regarded as a positive influence with a huge, young fanbase. In addition to being Nickelodeon's biggest star ever, she's also one of the biggest teen idols, period: with over 12 million YouTube subscribers and 31.8 million followers on TikTok, she's a top influencer in her own right.
As Insider's Amanda Krause reported, discourse around her has major potential to impact her fans. The praise for her choice to publicly come out online a daunting feat, even when there aren't millions hanging on your every word stands to have a positive impact that's already visible on social media.
According to The Trevor Project's 2020 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, over 80% of LGBTQ+ youth say out celebrities make them feel better about being queer.
"When young LGBTQ people can see themselves and their stories represented positively and genuinely, it can offer them perspective on how to cope with similar struggles they're facing in their lives, while also helping to improve their perceptions of the LGBTQ community and themselves," Tia Dole, Chief Clinical Operations Officer for The Trevor Project, told Insider.
Furthermore, JoJo's brand is and always has been based on living authentically, a theme that emerges frequently in her music and that Kim Kardashian West remarked upon in Siwa's 2020 Time 100 blurb. Her coming out, without a specific label but with an overwhelming feeling of happiness, could also serve as an inspiration to youth.
"I think what we saw with JoJo is that there's really no rules for coming out," Ramos told Insider. "I think youth just need to always do so when they feel supported and safe, which could be at very different points for different people. But for JoJo specifically, I really think the potential for young kids to see her living authentically will ultimately inspire so many of her young fans to do that and accept that part of themselves."
It's a well-known fact that LGBTQ+ youth suffer from disproportionate rates of mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations. This is in great part to do unsupportive families who react poorly when their children come out or are outed.
Sometimes families react by throwing their queer and trans children out of the house, as LGBTQ+ youth make up 40% percent of the US youth homeless population.
Other times, families send their children to conversion therapy, a violent tactic that consists of mental, emotional, and physical abuse with the goal of forcibly turning a child straight or cisgender through pseudoscience.
According to Dr. Lea Lis, psychiatrist and author of "No Shame: Real Talk With Your Kids About Sex, Self-Confidence and Healthy Relationships," Siwa's coming out could help parents be more willing to accept their queer children when they come out because of her wide reach and kid-friendly message.
"She is a figure for young people and they are going to share her news with their parents," Lis told Insider, highlighting that Siwa's coming out could change multiple viewpoints per family.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Siwa first grew her fame on "Dance Moms," a Lifetime reality show that showcased the tension-laden world of competitive dance. According to Ramos, those origins may also widen her impact.
"There's a lot of people I would say in middle America that probably know who she is and have since followed her, and so I really think that with JoJo coming out, there's a really strong possibility and opportunity for people have their hearts and minds change on what being LGBTQ really means," he told Insider, calling Siwa's coming out a "tremendous opportunity" for parents as well as kids.
Siwa coming out and receiving an outpouring of support from fans could offer hope to queer youth who may feel especially alone during the pandemic, Jor-El Caraballo, a therapist and founder of Viva Wellness NYC, told Insider.

Siwa has said that she's still keeping parts of her personal life private, but that what matters is that others know that "no matter who you love, that it's OK."

6 Ways to Turn a Crisis Into an Opportunity by Clare Wiley – Thrive Global
Posted: at 7:28 pm
The coronavirus pandemic is undoubtedly one of the most significant crises of our times. It has caused loss of life, unemployment and massive economic upheaval. However, we cant ignore the fact that the pandemic also has some upshots.
There was afall in daily global CO2 emissionsduring lockdown, for example, and perhaps as importantly, people are now more aware of the seriousnessof the climate crisis. There has been areductionin crime, road accidents, and even paper use. TheVenice canals cleared up,wildlife is returningto cities, companies arestepping uptheir social responsibility, education has been transformed andvolunteering has soared.
It can be difficult to see the silver linings during serious and catastrophic disasters. And yet, being able to find the opportunity in a crisis can have huge benefits for our mental well-being and personal lives.
First of all, its important to note that taking something positive from a difficult situation doesnt mean burying our heads in the sand or ignoring the dire reality of a situation.
Unliketoxic positivity, seeing opportunity during times of crisis does not mean suppressing unpleasant emotions. You can and should acknowledge and process all your feelings when a disaster or challenge happens. Seeing the opportunity means then reframing what the incident means in the story of our lives and what we might be able to do with it.
Youve probably heard that frustrating-but-true maxim that the only constant inlife is change. Crises are unavoidable. Whether its a relationship breakdown or getting fired, we will all face some kind of hardship in our lives. But adapting how we view and approach these struggles might actually allow us to turn them into something meaningful.
Crises come into our lives, no matter how we may try to avoid them, psychotherapist Mel Schwartz, LCSW, writes inPsychology Today. They are troubling, unwanted experiences or events that take us way out of our comfort zone. Typically, crises result in some type of loss. The very nature of a crisis is antithetical to our core values of certainty and predictability as they vanish in an instant.
Change and growth rarely happen when were comfortable. Schwartz argues that being nudged out of our comfort zone is key to seeing opportunity in crisis.
Transforming our career or love life, for instance, usually takes a great deal of dedication and intention. Crisis, on the other hand, removes the self-motivating requirement as it places us squarely outside of our familiar zone[this] is where the opportunity lies, he says.
Growth and fundamental levels of change only tend to occur when we are out of our comfort zone. So we might look at the crisis as a blessing in disguise, albeit an unwanted one.
Yoram (Jerry) Wind, emeritus professor of marketing at Wharton, and entrepreneur Nitin Rakesh, who co-authored a book on transformations during crises, agree. Theywrite: Instead of viewing the present situation as a short-term necessary evil that we should try to leave behind as soon as possible and return to a comfortable pre-crisis past, we should ask how to use the current situation to speed up long overdue changes.
Have you been meaning to leave your unfulfilling job but havent been able to summon the courage? Maybe youve always wanted to write a book, travel the world, or run a marathon, but got too comfortable with your daily routine and put it off. Being forced to shake things up might offer just the chance.
Another critical aspect of turning crisis into possibility is training yourself to think long-term. Your current crisis is not ideal, but it is just one moment in time.
To achieve self-empowerment requires looking beyond that snapshot and envisioning what door of potential has just flung open, writesSchwartz. Learning to look at the larger themes and patterns that set up these challenges will help develop a vantage point from which you may break through the struggle. In other words, what are the recurring stories of your life? What is your participation in this storyline?
Maria Langan-Riekhof, Arex B. Avanni, and Adrienne Janetti produced a report aboutturning challenges into opportunities for Brookings. They write, To turn an existing crisis into an opportunity often requires reframing the problem or looking at the issues through a different lens. If possible, allow yourself that perspective try and see the bigger picture.
Talkspace therapistElizabeth Hinkle, LMFT, provides these tips on applying this mindset in your own life. She offers the following five suggestions:
At the heart of turning crisis into opportunity is mental reframing. You dont have to ignore the reality of the situation, but you can change how you view it. Use the experience of being out of your comfort zone to seize opportunities. Remind yourself to see the bigger picture and patterns in your life, and prioritise your support systems.
If youre struggling to turn a crisis into an opportunity, consider speaking with a licensed Talkspace therapist a convenient and inexpensive way to make progress on your goals.

Posted: at 7:28 pm
Become a fitness trainer can be an excellent career choice if you like training and supporting others to accomplish their goals. As a fitness trainer, you might have probably already given unofficial fitness training sessions over the years. Still, there are more measures to take as a certified fitness trainer, get a job, or start your independent business. Discover how to become a fitness trainer to determine if it is the best profession for you.
With a growing concern about having healthier lifestyles that give more crucial information about obesity and other chronic disease epidemics, many people are being inclined towards health and fitness professions. Some people might consider fitness training looks like a challenging profession, where you help people in a field you love, it is adaptable, and you have many options for where you can work. There are some outstanding things about fitness training; here are some listed below.
Fitness trainers require an abundance of abilitiesjust some of the qualities that will encourage you to work like a professional.
To be an efficient fitness trainer, you should appreciate working with different sorts of people, a good listener, and be self-motivated.
You do not need to appear like a bodybuilder as a fitness trainer, but you should maintain a wholesome lifestyle to become a great role model for your clients.
All of those are important, but it is also essential to know what it is like to instruct clients day in and day out. You can discover more about it when you get a professional certificate, but the experience is always the greatest teacher. Training may look like a soothing wind, but it is more challenging than you may understand.
You will serve those clients,
Each person is unique, and you need to discover how hard you can motivate that client, what that client requires, and what they need. You also have to be very adaptable and be unhesitant to change the tactics if a workout is not going accordingly.
The following are the 8 eight steps you can take which will guide you to become a good certified personal trainer.
Once you have selected to become a fitness trainer is the best decision for you, the first step you take will be searching for the best certification program. Consider a certification from the renowned organization which provides the standard in health and fitness training. After determining the best certification program for you, it is time to collect your study materials. There are many trainer studies programs are created to cover all learning styles by giving content through easy text, graphics, charts, videos, practice tests, online activities, and on-demand study to reinforce the material. This learning practice is self-paced, usually take 80-100 hours over 3-4 months.
If you have completed your search for fitness training, your next step will be to get certified. It is very crucial to decide from where to get your certification done.
Certifying organizations have their different procedures of certification and behaviors accredited by an independent third party, such as the NCCA. If there a particular organization you like to work for, get to know what certifications they ask or recognize.
Analyze these points before choosing certifying organizations at the websites:
Prerequisites for the exam. At a minimum, most demand a high school diploma, a CPR certification, and that you are at least 18 years of age.
These are some of the well-reputed certification organizations and their accreditations:
One of the great things about fitness training is that there are a variety of places you can work, not just at a health club.3 You may be an employee of a business or work as an independent contractor for them. You may also train clients as your own business. If youre just starting out, however, you might want to work for a larger club to get experience while not having to worry about running your own business. Some ideas for employment opportunities include:
By the passing time and with practice, you will develop an interest in which kinds of clients you most relish training. Then you can invest in your further education and get your specialization done. With a specialty, you will have more to give your clients, and you can charge quite more for your specialized services.
Specialty options are:
Many certifying organizations give many specialty certifications, and you may receive a discount if you already possess a basic certification.
Continuing education is not only essential for obtaining your certification, but it also keeps you updated on the advancement in fitness, health, and weight management.
Your certifying organization will offer workshops, courses, and other means to get some additional credits, but there are more different methods to stay informed:
Once you get certification and get some work experience, eventually, you may start your own business as alimited liability company (LLC), sole proprietor, or corporation. Rather than an employee, if you are a self-governing contractor for a gym, you need to learn the benefits and downsides of these kinds of businesses as well.
Learn How to Run a Business:
Many people go into personal training because they like to assist people. Still, you want to know the aspects of business registration or affiliation, zoning, licensing, accounting, budgeting, filing taxes, tracking your expenses, and more. It is important to take a short business course from a local community college if these things are not familiar to you.
Financial Investment:
In the starting, you will need to spend cash to get your business to grow, which depend on your business type; you may require:
Sell Your Services:
If you do not know marketing tactics, you may require to take courses to acquire the best ways to sell your services to customers.
Get Experience from Outside:
When you work for yourself, you do not get a chance to have other trainers to guide clients. For that purpose, it is usually advised to begin at a gym or some other department before starting your own, to gain some experience.
How Can New Personal Trainers Make Additional Cash?
Think of executing a membership model rather than a pay-as-you-go policy. You can allow various memberships for different periods of time and set up client payment via auto-debit for an accepted term. For clients who cannot manage one-on-one training, consider giving a group boot camp. On the other side, some people like the comfort of training at home, so you can also offer in-home training sessions for an additional fee.
What Kinds of Business Insurance Do New Personal Trainers Require?
Being a certified personal trainer, you require commercial general liability insurance, which includes third-party property damage, bodily injury, and reputational harm. Trainers who run gyms or own many fitness gears may also require commercial property insurance. Go for the best business insurance company that operates with small businesses and has specific packages for fitness instructors and personal trainers.
Marketing without any doubt is one of the most important things you will need to do to draw more clients. The following are a some of the things you may require to get your name out there:
Being prosperous at this job demands lots of hard work, skill, capability, and experience. To get a certification is no guarantee that you will either capture clients or, most importantly, can be able to keep those clients.
How you train your clients is essential, but how you keep them is even more critical. Thats why you need:
How Do You Assure That a Fitness Program Is Useful for Clients?
There is no specific best workout plan, but many excellent options depend on your clients beginning point and fitness objects. Do your study, agree on a project with your client, and do your best to get them to attach with it. Training sessions may be challenging, especially at the start; try to concentrate your client on results. At the same time, be adaptable with clients.
For your motivation, we have compiled a list of some advice from top fitness trainers that are excelling in their fields.
Provide a Safe and Comfortable Environment:
Create a safe space for clients, fostering a no judgment no competition, no comparison place so that change can happen organically.
Lead Your Clints By Example:
Practice what you preach, maintain your own fitness. Anyone can be a trainer but if all of the focus is on the clients it can be easy to overlook your own workout needs as well.
Empower Your Clints:
The best trainers are coaches with the ability to empower their clients; consistency and connection lead to empowerment.
Show Your Concern:
Ask how the client is feeling day to day; truly listen to him or her and adjust the program as needed.
Help Your Clients to Maintain a Healthy Life:
Top trainers are comfortable exposing themselves as real human beings with flaws; help the client create a healthy life not just in the gym but when they step out into the world so their hard work and newly-developed confidence travel with them.
Educate Your Clients:
A truly great experience is when the client becomes knowledgeable and confident, allowing him or her to take ownership of the workout process.
Invest Your Time in Continuing Education:
Take continuing education seriously. Invest the time to develop programs with long-term goals in mind. Listen to clients and adjust the programs to meet each individuals specific needs. Finally, create a long-term career path by working towards becoming a master trainer; thats one way to help yourself stand out from your peers.
Final Thoughts:
Due to the increase in inactive lifestyles and obesity, personal trainers may have many job possibilities. The world always wants new, passionate trainers to get the word out about wellness and fitness. Take out the time to discover what is required to become a trainer before deciding on your career. One of the essential characteristics for a fitness professional is keeping a positive attitude and delivering excellent customer service no matter the circumstances, yet this is something that has to be acquired from experience while serving in the job. There are no alternatives on the way to success in fitness. However, work hard, learn from others, and consistently apply best practices defined by successful personal trainers can reduce the chances of failure.

Your Guide to Surviving Mercury Retrograde in 2021, Based on Your Zodiac Sign – HYPEBAE
Posted: at 7:28 pm
If youve been undergoing a series of miscommunications lately, that can only mean one thing: Mercury retrograde is upon us. To put astro-terminology in simple terms, Mercury moves backward from its orbit three to four times a year, resulting in a series of unfortunate occurrences. Known to be the planet that represents communication, travel and technology, Mercury allows us to convey our thoughts by filtering what we say, as well as how we absorb information from others on a regular day. With that in mind, during these unpredictable times, you may want to remain vigilant when it comes to conveying your feelings to the people you care about, or even when sending out simple texts or emails.
In 2021, this cosmic event will only take place three times, with the first Mercury retrograde starting on January 30. Below, astrologer Julia Modorsky of the Sanctuary app breaks down all the different dates you need to look out for this year, as well as what to expect based on your zodiac sign.
Aquarius offers progress that will aid the future, and tends to bring on new discoveries and sudden realizations. During Mercury retrograde in Aquarius, you will retrace your steps to come to a better understanding of these new insights. Due to the Aquarian influence, you may want to back up your tech devices or save some files as Mercury slows down consciousness here on Earth.
Find where 2629 to 1101 Aquarius is in your natal chart. This is where Mercury will appear to move backward for you, where you will be introspective for three weeks.
Introspective about friendship, community and hopes, dreams, visions of the future. Some will experience this reflection in the area of career, goals and public presence.
Introspective about career, how youre recognized publicly in the world and your goals in life. Some will experience this reflection with where they feel free in life or with their philosophies and beliefs.
Introspective about exploration (new perspectives, worlds and philosophies). Some will experience this reflection on the deeper meanings in life, intimacy and vulnerability with others, and personal empowerment.
Introspective about your transformation in your life, where you feel powerful, and diving deeper into a topic or practice. Some will experience this reflection on relationships, connections and balance.
Introspective about your partnerships, support systems and how you feel centered. Some will experience this reflection on health, personal healing, daily routine, or services they can provide that can help others in some way.
Introspective about your day-to-day, healing, your job (not career) or even your coworkers. Some will experience this reflection on creativity, self-expression and how they shine.

SpaceXs Starship Mars Rocket Prototype Crashes Again After Test Launch – The New York Times
Posted: at 7:27 pm
If it exploded last time, try, try again. They did, and it exploded again.
On Tuesday, a test flight of SpaceXs Starship, a huge next-generation spacecraft that Elon Musk, the founder and chief executive of the private rocket company, dreams of one day sending to Mars, came to an explosive end.
That brief flight, to an altitude of about 6 miles and then back to a landing pad, appeared to again demonstrate how the mammoth rocket would tip over on its side as it descended in a controlled belly flop back toward a landing.
But when the prototype fired its engines to right itself back to a vertical orientation, it appeared that one engine did not properly ignite, and Starship hit the ground at an angle, disintegrating in a fireball, leaving a cloud of smoke rising over the test site, which is in Boca Chica, Tex., near Brownsville.
Weve just got to work on that landing a little bit, said John Insprucker, a SpaceX engineer hosting a webcast of the test.
The end was similar to the last test flight in December which also ended in an explosion at landing, although the particular cause of the rocket failing to slow down enough may have been different.
This time, however, SpaceX at least had the permission of government regulators.
Last week, SpaceX and the Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates rocket launches, seemed to be in a strange regulatory standoff. SpaceX had filled the propellant tanks of this prototype of Starship its ninth one and looked ready to launch. But then the rocket stayed on the ground when no approval from the F.A.A. arrived.
Mr. Musk expressed frustration on Twitter, describing the part of the F.A.A. that oversees SpaceX as fundamentally broken.
Mr. Musk wrote, Their rules are meant for a handful of expendable launches per year from a few government facilities. Under those rules, humanity will never get to Mars.
Late on Monday, the F.A.A. gave permission for Tuesdays launch, but then added that the December launch had occurred without the agencys approval. SpaceX had requested a waiver to conduct that flight even though it posed a greater danger to the public than allowed by regulations. The F.A.A. denied the request. SpaceX defied the ruling and launched anyway.
The F.A.A. statement indicated that the agency was unhappy with the defiance of SpaceX. Even if Starship had landed perfectly, launching it without approval was a violation of the companys license.
SpaceX was told to investigate and report on this series of events and to halt testing that could endanger the public until the company made changes that satisfied the agency.
In its statement, the F.A.A. said that SpaceX had complied with the safety regulations, giving a green light to this test flight.
Mr. Musks company has become successful in the launch business, and it is now one of the worlds most valuable privately held companies. Its Falcon 9 rockets have become a dominant workhorse for sending satellites to orbit. It routinely transports cargo to the International Space Station, and has lifted NASA astronauts there twice in 2020, with more trips planned this year.
However, many are skeptical about Mr. Musks assertion that the company is just a few years from sending a Starship to Mars, saying he has repeatedly set timelines for SpaceX that proved far too optimistic in how quickly they have come to pass.
In 2019, when he provided an update on the development of Starship, he said a high-altitude test would occur within months and that orbital flights could occur early in 2020.
Instead, several catastrophic failures happened because of faulty welding. When the propellant tanks stopped rupturing, one of the prototypes made a short successful flight in September. That earlier Starship model, which resembled a spray paint can with the label removed, lifted itself nearly 500 feet using a single rocket engine before setting down at the Texas test site.
Jared Zambrano-Stout, a former official at the F.A.A.s office of commercial space transportation, said he was stunned when he saw the agencys statement about SpaceX.
SpaceX seems to have violated their launch license, and there does not seem to have been any repercussions, he said.
Mr. Zambrano-Stout, who is now director of congressional and regulatory policy at Meeks, Butera and Israel, a Washington law firm, said he knew of no other instances where the F.A.A. had denied a launch license or where a company launched without approval from the F.A.A.
Its important for people to understand that the FAAs job is not to stop launches from occurring, he said. They are in the business of licensing launches.
The agencys role is to ensure safety for what it calls the uninvolved public people not involved with SpaceX or the launch so that someone just walking around or sitting at home is not injured or killed if something goes wrong.
I think it would be really hard to find an example of where the F.A.A. has stopped SpaceX from doing what it wanted to do before the December incident, Mr. Zambrano-Stout said.
The next Starship prototype the tenth has already been built and rolled out to the launchpad. It could fly later this month, Mr. Insprucker said during the webcast.
As SpaceX continues its development of Starship, it has already launched three other rockets this year. One mission, Transporter-1, launched on Sunday and carried 133 commercial and government spacecraft (as well as 10 of SpaceXs Starlink internet satellites). The launch represented SpaceXs entry into the business known as rideshare, in which numerous customers pay for a fraction of the cost of a trip to orbit.

SpaceX announced Monday it will launch the first mission to space with an all-civilian crew, and members of the public have been invited to enter a drawing for one of the seats on the spacecraft.
The four-person mission will be commanded by Jared Isaacman, a tech entrepreneur and pilot on the side. Isaacman is the founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments, a payment processing firm, and will be bankrolling the mission that has been named "Inspiration4."
Isaacman donated two seats to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, one of which will be taken up by a worker from the nonprofit hospital. The other seat will be given to a member of the public who enters a raffle online. While no donation is necessary to enter the drawing, people are encouraged to donate to St. Jude's and can earn more entries by doing so.
To kick off the donations, Isaacman committed an initial gift of $100 million.
Jared Isaacman is shown in this undated image provided by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The fourth seat will go to an entrepreneur who uses Isaacman's Shift4Shop eCommerce platform and submits a video showcasing their business and how they used the technology. This winner will be selected by an independent panel of judges.
"Inspiration4 is the realization of a lifelong dream and a step towards a future in which anyone can venture out and explore the stars," Isaacman said in a statement. "I appreciate the tremendous responsibility that comes with commanding this mission, and I want to use this historic moment to inspire humanity while helping to tackle childhood cancer here on Earth."
The crew will undergo astronaut training conducted by SpaceX, and the launch is currently scheduled for "no earlier than the fourth quarter of this year," according to a statement on SpaceX's website.
The mission will use a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its Dragon spacecraft and will launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It will be a "multi-day journey," SpaceX stated, "orbiting Earth every 90 minutes along a customized flight path" and "will be carefully monitored at every step by SpaceX mission control."
At its conclusion, the Dragon spacecraft will splash down in a soft water landing off the coast of Florida.
An 30-second ad for the mission is slated to run during the Super Bowl this year to introduce it to the public.
"Todays announcement is the first step of a very exciting journey," Isaacman said. "In the lead-up to launch, well share new ways to support and follow our mission preparation and execution with a focus on inspiring and helping others."
While it once took the backing of entire nations to get to space, the landscape has notably evolved in recent years to become the arena of billionaires with the rise of private firms such as Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic.
Last year, SpaceX made history by becoming the first private firm to launch NASA astronauts into space -- a feat it completed twice in 2020.

Mass Effect Andromeda Had A Playable Prototype For Space Exploration, But It Was Scrapped – TheGamer
Posted: at 7:26 pm
Mass Effect Andromeda almost included a space exploration system that allowed you to manually drive the Tempest.
Mass Effect Andromeda featured a variety of new systems thatiteratedon preexisting ones from the series' original trilogy. For example, a lot of work was put into developing the Nomad, a land vehicle designed for traversing rough terrain on certain planets. Given the amount of flak directed at the first Mass Effect game's Mako, which handled like an anti-gravity go-kart with two missing wheels, the improvements to the Nomad were warmly welcomed by many players.
As it turns out, this wasn't the only transport enhancement that was on the cards during development of Andromeda. According to Dorian Kieken - who was a development director at BioWare during Mass Effect 2 and 3, before becoming franchise development director in the early days of Andromeda - there was also a playable prototype for completely revamped space travel.
I remember playing a pretty good prototype of space exploration back in 2015, Kieken says. You would basically pilot your ship from planet to planet."
I wasn't in the company anymore when that decision [to cut it] was made, but I'm not surprised," Kieken explains. "Not because it was not fun. It was. But it would have likely required a lot of effort to make work, and so, keeping it would have cost other parts of the game.
Related:How Mass Effect Inspired The Games Industry And Beyond
We tried to do too much with Andromeda, from large explorable planets with a ground vehicle to space exploration with tons of planets. Something had to eventually give.
It's fascinating to think about how this could have fared in Andromeda. I personally thought that planet design was one of the game's strongest elements, so having the opportunity to consciously flit between them at the helm of the Tempest instead of fast-travelling via the Galaxy Map could have been brilliant. Hopefully we see this prototype realized in a future Mass Effect game.
In related news, Kieken also told us about a Han Solo-inspired Mass Effect spin-off that was scrapped before Mass Effect 2. While he and several other devs at BioWare thought the idea was solid, there simply wasn't enough bandwidth to focus on it while also working on Mass Effect 2.

How two space-exploration projects are using the Arctic to stand in for extraterrestrial environments – Nunatsiaq News
Posted: at 7:26 pm
A recently completed project saw Greenland stand in for the Moon. Another is using Iceland as a substitute for Mars.
If you want to get an idea of what Mars looks like, a good place to start, ironically, is Google Earth.
The service provides highly detailed, first-person views of parts of Devon Island, in Nunavut, a place that the U.S. space agency NASA, among others, has described as providing earth-bound scientists with the closest thing they can get to Mars without leaving home.
While no humans have been to Mars yet, there were 14 missions to the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS) between 2001 and 2017, when the Mars Society, a non-profit that promotes space exploration, stopped running the facility.
A big benefit of using the Arctic as a stand-in for an extraterrestrial environment is that it adds a sense of realism and fidelity when preparing for space exploration: it is challenging to get to and far removed from human settlements, while specific locations, such as the area around FMARS, provide scientists with conditions similar to what would be experienced on Mars.
But, unlike other parts of the Earth that are more remote Antarctica, for example Arctic sites tend to be close enough to civilization to allow scientists to have a safe place to retreat to in the event of a medical emergency or some other mishap. The Devon Island site is a one-hour flight from the nearest settlement, Resolute. A site on Svalbard is also reassuringly close to Longyearbyen, the largest settlement in the archipelago.
Architects Karl-Johan Srensen (right) and Sebastian Aristotelis stand next to a folded Lunark habitat. (Saga Space Architects)
This was part of thinking behind the choice of Moriusaq, in northwestern Greenland, for the site of the Lunark project, which, in December, completed testing of a habitat that its creators, Saga Space Architects, hope could serve as a model the housing used by future lunar explorers.
Moriusaq is located close to Thule Air Base, a U.S. Air Force base that served as the staging point for the expedition. When looking for a location test the habitat, Saga Space Architects says it also considered sites near Station Nord, a Danish military facility in northeastern Greenland, which could also have served as a staging point.
Its important for the project to take place in an environment that looks and behaves like the Moons surface. Northern Greenland has some unique features that make it an ideal Lunar test-bed, the firm wrote of its search for a suitable location.
When shipped, the two-person pop-up structure is folded, origami-style, reducing its size by a factor of eight and allowing it to fit in a standard shipping container. Weighing 1,700 kilograms, the habitat is designed to stand up to temperatures of minus 45 degrees Celsius and winds of up to 90 km/h.
Some assembly is required, when erecting Lunark, but the habitat, according to Saga Space Architects, is designed to arrive completely equipped with furniture, food and other resources. Karl-Johan Srensen and Sebastian Aristotelis, two Danish architects, and the founders of Saga Space Architects, who lived in the habitat in Greenland, needed a day to expand the structure. It took them a month to set up camp, and they eventually spent 60 days living in Lunark, rather than the planned 90.
The shorter period was due to a delay deploying the habitat. The challenge of working in an Arctic environment was something Srensen and Aristotelis touched on in one of their brief updates, which were sent using a satellite phone to imitate the limited communication with Earth that future space travellers will experience.
Hab (the habitat, ed.) is almost finished! Why is it taking so long? We didnt manage to finish all the details in time for shipment. Fixing sh*t here is slow and hard, the two wrote in a post dated September 21.
When it comes to the second project, which is currently underway, the appeal of the location the lava fields of Icelands highlands has less to do with its remoteness than it does how, and when, it was formed.
The lava field, known as Holuhraun, is devoid of vegetation or topsoil, making it similar to what some Martian landscapes look like, according to Christopher Hamilton, a University of Arizona scientists who heads a protect studying whether drones can be used to provide eyes in the sky for Mars rovers.
When earth-bound sites such as Devon Island and Holuhraun are shaped by similar geologic processes as their extraterrestrial counterparts, they can be used as mock environments, or analogs, to prepare explorers to safely navigate the real thing.
In the case of Holuhraun, the will be the second time it stands in for a non-Earth environment. In the 1960s, NASA turned to the area as a lunar analog when looking to give Apollo astronauts a taste of what they might experience on the Moon.
This time around, the RoverAerial Vehicle Exploration Networks, or RAVEN, project, which recently received $3.1 million from NASA, is designed to give scientists and idea of how to explore terrain that was created by a volcanic eruption in 2019, and is similar to those observed on Mars.
As far as technology goes, RAVEN, takes its cue from existing drones, including Ingenuity, a helicopter-like drone that that is arrive on Mars together with NASAs Perseverance rover on February 18. In addition to giving scientists an idea of what it takes to fly in the thin Martian atmosphere, Ingenuitys job will be act as a scout that identifies sites that might be of interest for future missions. The results of the RAVEN project, on the other hand, will be help future Martian drones work in tandem with rovers on the ground, and that requires knowing what to look for ahead of time.
Volcanic terrains offer exciting targets for exploration because of their potential to generate habitable hydrothermal systems, which could support or preserve microbial life, Hamilton said. RAVEN would make such locations accessible for the first time.
Similarly, young lava of the likes found on Mars and at Holuhraun can be too rugged for rovers to traverse, which can limit their usefulness, or, worse, put them out of action. Having a drone accompanying them can help by scouting a path forward for them, or, if they are equipped with prospecting equipment, by carrying samples back to the rover.
Pascal Lee, the co-founder of the Mars Society, has suggested that Mars astronauts would get their first taste of life off Earth in the Arctic. The same, it would seem, is true for the machines as well.
