Why Shares of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Delta, and Southwest Plummeted Today – Motley Fool
Posted: February 29, 2020 at 11:04 pm
What happened
Another day, another massive stock sell-off in response to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. In trading today, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 3.1%, the Nasdaq Composite was nearly as bad with a 2.8% decline, and the broader S&P 500 fell right in the middle, closing 3% lower.
As we saw on Monday, some of the worst damage was suffered by stocks tied to travel and tourism. By the time markets closed Tuesday, cruise lines Carnival(NYSE:CCL) and Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL) were down 5.1% and 7.3%, respectively. Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) declined 6.1%, and investors showed no love for Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV), which was down 8.2%.

But didn't we already know all there was to know about the scale of the coronavirus outbreak Monday? Apparently not.
As the crisis escalates, Johns Hopkins University's website tracking the disease's progress remained hobbled Tuesday, unable to fully configure data on global cases of COVID-19 (the illness caused by SARS-CoV-2).
And on Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a stark warning: It is "inevitable" that the disease will spread throughout the United States. The virus is not contained, it said, and "It's not a question of if this will happen, but when this will happen, and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses."
Although it was certainly not its intention to do so, I doubt the CDC could have phrased its message in a way more calculated to cause panic than if it had tried. And the agency then proceeded to urge businesses to begin planning to consider replacing in-person meetings with telework, The Washington Post reported. Schools are being urged to consider internet-based learning, and hospitals are to prepare for triage.
Under these circumstances, the idea of being cooped up aboard ships at sea or inside sealed aluminum tubes in midair translates into bad news for cruise lines and airlines alike.
As Senator Richard Shelby, the Alabama Republican, said today: "I think the American people are very concerned and should be. I'm concerned."
And the stock market is, too.

Grandfather of child who died on Royal Caribbean ship pleading guilty – Business Insider – Business Insider
Posted: at 11:04 pm
Salvatore Anello, the grandfather of an 18-month-old toddler who died last year after falling from the 11th floor of a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, is pleading guilty to negligent homicide, his lawyer, Michael Winkleman, told Business Insider.
Anello had previously pleaded not guilty after the death of granddaughter Chloe Wiegand, but in a statement released by Winkleman and as reported by NBC News on Tuesday, Anello said he was changing his plea "to try to help end part of this nightmare for my family, if possible."
As part of Anello's new plea deal, he'll be allowed to serve probation in his home state of Indiana instead of spending time in jail, Winkleman said. The hearing during which Anello will change his plea has not yet been scheduled.
Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comment.
Wiegand's parents sued Royal Caribbean in December, alleging that Royal Caribbean was negligent by leaving open the window she fell through. Anello had lifted Wiegand up to a railing behind the open window, believing there was glass in front of her.
Her family believes she fell while trying to hit the glass like she did during her brother's hockey games, which ended up not being there, according to an NBC News story from July.
"In my experience, any elevated public place I've been with that much glass has always been a protective barrier," Anello said in his statement.
Wiegand's mother, Kimberly, told NBC's "Today" show last year that she blamed Royal Caribbeanfor her daughter's death.
"We have a lot of questions primarily, why is there an open window in the kids' play area 11 stories off the ground?" she said.
A Royal Caribbean representative said at the time that the company was "deeply saddened by this incident, and our hearts go out to the family."

Why Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Hertz Global Stocks All Dropped Today – Motley Fool
Posted: at 11:04 pm
What happened
Give them an "A" for effort: Stock markets made a valiant attempt to rally on Wednesday morning, with the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P 500 all up more than 1% at one point. But the rally is fizzling, partly because of what have become the usual wet blankets:Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL), Carnival (NYSE:CCL), andHertz Global Holdings (NYSE:HTZ)were down 7.7%, 8.5%, and a staggering 11.2%, respectively, as of 1:35 p.m. EST on Wednesday.
Why these stocks? I'll give you three guesses, but if you've been paying attention, you'll only need one: theSARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
Back at the start of this month, Carnival became the symbol for the corporate risks ofthe dread disease when it was reported that 10 people had tested positive for COVID-19 aboard the company's Diamond Princess cruise ship.
Royal Caribbean further illustrated the extent of the danger when it began canceling cruises out of China in response to the emerging crisis.
And Hertz, yet another travel industry company in a world that seems to have suddenly locked its doors, soon became one of the latest dominoes to fall -- and falling it is today.
Anyone who thought investors had worked out all their jitters over the past two days of nonstop selling on Wall Street is getting disabused of that notion as stock indexes turn tail and give up their gains.
This crisis will pass, as so many before it already have. (Remember bird flu? We used to talk a lot about bird flu.) A cure will likely be found, regulators will likely fast-track it, and the outbreak will end.
But in the short term, and as long as this current crisis keeps escalating, it's probably best to take a cue from the vacationers who are canceling their travel plans and stay away from travel and leisure stocks for the time being.

Disney Reportedly Considering Bringing Johnny Depp Back For Pirates Of The Caribbean Reboot – We Got This Covered
Posted: at 11:04 pm
The argument could be made that the world really doesnt need another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but when the franchise has earned over $4.5 billion at the box office and rests in the hands of our pop culture overlords at Disney, there was little chance of the Black Pearl being allowed to sail off into the sunset.
Fifth installment Dead Men Tell No Tales may have been the lowest-grossing entry since the original back in 2003, but a $795 million global total is hardly small change, and the Mouse House are keen to keep milking their swashbuckling cash cow for all that its worth. Chernobyl co-creator Craig Mazin is currently writing the script for the new film alongside Pirates veteran Ted Elliott, but little is known about the creative direction for the sixth high-seas adventure besides the desire to cast a female star in the lead.
Disney certainly upset a lot of fans though when they very publicly dropped leading man Johnny Depp in the wake of his headline-grabbing divorce from Amber Heard, although the studio did stand to save around $90 million on the actors lucrative contract to keep playing Jack Sparrow. However, following a series of revelations in the court case between the two former spouses, were now hearing that the 56 year-old could be set to reprise his Academy Award-nominated signature role in the upcoming sixth movie.
According to our intel which comes from the same sources that told us National Treasure 3 was in development last year, and that Disney was doing an Aladdin sequel well before it was officially announced the recent turn of events in Depps legal battle and the overwhelming support from the public in his favor has some of the Mouse House executives now lobbying for his return behind the scenes. And given that these are the same sources who also said last year that the studio was doing a Bambilive-action remake, weve no reason to doubt them.
If he does return though, Jack Sparrow would play more of a supporting role, similar to how he was used in Curse of the Black Pearl, with the lead still set to be a female pirate. How exactly hed factor into the story, that we dont yet know, but in any case, thereve already been petitions launched to get him rehired that have amassed thousands of signaturesand that goal now looks closer to reality. Besides, as one of the most popular movie characters of the century, a lot of people would have little interest in a Pirates of the Caribbean flick that didnt feature Captain Jack Sparrow and as such, weve got our fingers crossed that hes able to return.

Grandfather of 1-year-old who fell to her death from Royal Caribbean cruise ship to plead guilty – USA TODAY
Posted: at 11:04 pm
Chloe Wiegand's mother, Kim, and her grandfather, Salvatore "Sam" Anello, address the media on Wednesday. Indianapolis Star
The grandfather of a toddler who died after falling from an 11th-floor window of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in Puerto Rico last year will plead guilty in her death.
Salvatore Sam Anello initially pleadednot guilty to negligent homicide in the death of his 18-month-old granddaughter, Chloe Wiegand. But the family'sattorney, Michael Winkleman, told the Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY Network, that Anello filed documents to change his plea to guilty in return for no jail time.
I took a plea deal today to try to help end part of this nightmare for my family, if possible, Anello said in a statement provided by Winkleman. The support they continue to give me has been beyond overwhelming and I cant tell you how grateful I am for them.
On Monday, Anello declined his right to a jury trial and will instead face a judge. He will serve probation in Indiana, Winkleman added.
The Star has reached out to officials from Royal Caribbean and the Puerto Rico Department of Justice for comment.
Chloe died July 2019 as she vacationed with her family aboard the Freedom of the Seas of Royal Caribbean Cruises. Anello has said he did not know the window was open when he lifted Chloe to it so she could bang on the glass like she did during her brothers hockey games.

Winkleman let a Star reporter and editor review Royal Caribbean surveillance footage that showed the toddler's fall.
The video shows the toddler following her grandfather toward the big windows. Anello is seen leaning over an interior railing in front of the windows.
The video shows Anello lifting Chloe onto the railing. In an instant, she's gone.

The Wiegand family sued Royal Caribbean, accusing it of negligence by allowing the window in the ships childrens play area to be open. The cruise ship company, in court documents filed Jan. 8, puts all the blame on Anello.
"This is a case about an adult man," Royal Caribbean said in its motion, "who, as surveillance footage unquestionably confirms: (1) walked up to a window he was aware was open; (2) leaned his upper body out the window for several seconds; (3) reached down and picked up Chloe; and (4) then held her by and out of the open window for thirty four seconds before he lost his grip and dropped Chloe out of the window.
Ahearing date for Anello's change of plea has yet to be determined.

Petition To Bring Johnny Depp Back To Pirates Of The Caribbean Almost At Its Goal – We Got This Covered
Posted: at 11:04 pm
AfterJohnny Deppallegedly lost the role as the main star of Pirates of the Caribbean because of his messy legal battle with Amber Heard, fans are now petitioning for Disney to give Jack Sparrow back to him.
ThePiratesfranchise has always been a hit at the box office and while a number of unique features have contributed to that successful run over the years, theres no denying that Johnny Depp is the glue that ends up holding it all together every time. Unfortunately, though, the Mouse House announced a couple of months ago that they didnt intend to bring the star back for another installment, deciding instead to give the series a soft reboot with another actor at the helm.
Now, in light of the new evidence as part of Depps defamation lawsuit against Heard that exposed her for physically and emotionally abusing him during their time together, fans are banding up and asking for justice. As we previously reported, the petition to bring back Depp to Pirates of the Caribbeanis quickly gaining momentum and as of now, its just shy of 29,000 signatures away from its 200,000 goal. Its also interesting to note that its gaining traction concurrently as the petition to remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2is on its way to hit the next target of 500,000 signatures.
Of course, it remains to be seen if these appeals end up affecting the decision-making process at Disney and WB headquarters, but it seems that fans are quite adamant to see justice served, even if its at the expense of the actress behind the DCEUs Mera losing her job. After all, as they point out, Depp had to unjustly endure the same thing, right?
Meanwhile, Paul Bettany has recently gotten dragged into the lawsuit against Heard as both sides continue to give evidence for review at court, proof that this messy squabble is still far from over.
Tell us, though, do you think that the Mouse House should give Johnny Depphis role back? Or would you prefer to see someone else lead the franchise in future entries? Tell us in the comments section down below.

Cystic fibrosis – Symptoms and causes – Mayo Clinic
Posted: at 11:03 pm
Overview
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body.
Cystic fibrosis affects the cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices. These secreted fluids are normally thin and slippery. But in people with CF, a defective gene causes the secretions to become sticky and thick. Instead of acting as lubricants, the secretions plug up tubes, ducts and passageways, especially in the lungs and pancreas.
Although cystic fibrosis is progressive and requires daily care, people with CF are usually able to attend school and work. They often have a better quality of life than people with CF had in previous decades. Improvements in screening and treatments mean that people with CF now may live into their mid- to late 30s or 40s, and some are living into their 50s.
In the U.S., because of newborn screening, cystic fibrosis can be diagnosed within the first month of life, before symptoms develop. But people born before newborn screening became available may not be diagnosed until the signs and symptoms of CF show up.
Cystic fibrosis signs and symptoms vary, depending on the severity of the disease. Even in the same person, symptoms may worsen or improve as time passes. Some people may not experience symptoms until their teenage years or adulthood. People who are not diagnosed until adulthood usually have milder disease and are more likely to have atypical symptoms, such as recurring bouts of an inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis), infertility and recurring pneumonia.
People with cystic fibrosis have a higher than normal level of salt in their sweat. Parents often can taste the salt when they kiss their children. Most of the other signs and symptoms of CF affect the respiratory system and digestive system.
The thick and sticky mucus associated with cystic fibrosis clogs the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. This can cause signs and symptoms such as:
The thick mucus can also block tubes that carry digestive enzymes from your pancreas to your small intestine. Without these digestive enzymes, your intestines aren't able to completely absorb the nutrients in the food you eat. The result is often:
If you or your child has symptoms of cystic fibrosis or if someone in your family has CF talk with your doctor about testing for the disease. Consult a physician who is knowledgeable about CF.
Cystic fibrosis requires consistent, regular follow-up with your doctor, at least every three months. Contact you doctor if you experience new or worsening symptoms, such as more mucus than usual or a change in the mucus color, lack of energy, weight loss, or severe constipation.
Seek immediate medical care if you're coughing up blood, have chest pain or difficulty breathing, or have severe stomach pain and distention.
In cystic fibrosis, a defect (mutation) in a gene the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene changes a protein that regulates the movement of salt in and out of cells. The result is thick, sticky mucus in the respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems, as well as increased salt in sweat.
Many different defects can occur in the gene. The type of gene mutation is associated with the severity of the condition.
Children need to inherit one copy of the gene from each parent in order to have the disease. If children inherit only one copy, they won't develop cystic fibrosis. However, they will be carriers and could pass the gene to their own children.
Because cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder, it runs in families, so family history is a risk factor. Although CF occurs in all races, it's most common in white people of Northern European ancestry.
Complications of cystic fibrosis can affect the respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems, as well as other organs.
If you or your partner has close relatives with cystic fibrosis, you both may choose to have genetic testing before having children. The test, which is performed in a lab on a sample of blood, can help determine your risk of having a child with CF.
If you're already pregnant and the genetic test shows that your baby may be at risk of cystic fibrosis, your doctor can conduct additional tests on your developing child.
Genetic testing isn't for everyone. Before you decide to be tested, you should talk to a genetic counselor about the psychological impact the test results might carry.

LAFC vs. Inter Miami CF most in-demand opening game ticket in at least 10 years – MLSsoccer.com
Posted: at 11:03 pm
The season-opening bout between Inter Miami CF and LAFC at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday (5:30 pm ET | ESPN, ESPN Deportes, MLS LIVE on DAZN in Canada)is a sexy matchup for a lot of reasons.
On one side, you've got an LAFC team coming off arguably the most dominant single season in MLS history a torrid 2019 campaign that saw them cruise to the Supporters' Shield while racking up 72 points and post a ridiculous +48 goal-differential (both league records)while also boasting the league's MVP in Carlos Vela.
On the other, you've got Inter Miami playing theirfirst-ever MLS match, a long-awaitedculmination of an expansion project years in the making, with a roster that looks set to have them competitive from the jump, including a Mexican star of theirown in Rodolfo Pizarro.
All of that makes it arguably the most anticipated fixture of the league's opening weekend, and it's reflected in the numbers.
According to a Thursday story in the Miami Herald, tickets for the match are re-selling for an average price of $149 the highest number for an MLS opener since SeatGeek started tracking the secondary market in 2010. The next-closest total for this year's opening weekend is Nashville SC's MLS debut against Atlanta United on Saturday at $84.
If you needed any more evidence as to the hype surrounding this one, that's as good as any. Now, to see how it actually plays out on the field.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) Students at School No. 43 in Rochester gathered to support their classmate living with cystic fibrosis, or CF.
At Fridays Purple Shirt Day assembly, third grader Trent Judkins read aloud his own recently published book.
8-year-old Judkins is living with cystic fibrosis. The hereditary disease affects the lungs and the digestive system. His book that he wrote and illustrated explains what its like to have the disease.
Trents father, Trent Judkins Sr., helped to organize the assembly.
Today were just looking to kinda raise awareness. Really just help families that are dealing with CF. Kinda put it out there let it be known that its known in our community. Just kind of give everyone a visual on exactly what happens in your day to day life and what goes on with CF and cystic fibrosis, said Trent Judkins Sr.
Trents book is called A Boy with CF: His Story of Acceptance and Endurance. Trent and his family also started a foundation for CF called TJAE CF Foundation, which stands for The Journey of Acceptance and Endurance.

Ex Vivo Testing Phase Underway with Tissue Samples Collected from More than 500 Adult CF Patients; Enrollment Target Exceeded
Clinical Testing Phase to Begin in 2H 2020
Company Expects CHOICES to Potentially Serve as the Basis for an MAA in 2021
BOSTON, Feb. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Proteostasis Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTI), a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and development of groundbreaking therapies to treat cystic fibrosis (CF) and CF Europe, the federation of 48 national CF Associations in Europe, today announced the completion of enrollment of 502 patients with CF for HIT-CF, a European-based initiative that is paving the path to personalized medicine through the CHOICES clinical trial. CHOICES will test PTI drug combinations in an ex vivo study and then in a clinical trial to assess the predictability of the organoid assay for clinical benefit.
For the ex vivo portion, organoids derived from tissue samples provided by patients enrolled in the study are evaluated for responsiveness to investigational CFTR modulators, including Proteostasis' CFTR potentiator, corrector and amplifier, dirocaftor (DIR), posenacaftor (POS) and nesolicaftor (NES), respectively. Based on an individual's organoid response, patients will be invited to progress to the next portion of the study which is a placebo controlled, double blind, crossover study known as the CHOICES trial (Crossover trial based on Human Organoid Individual response in CF - Efficacy Study).
The results from CHOICES may serve as the basis for a potential Marketing Authorization Application with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2021 through a novel regulatory pathway. This strategic initiative is led by the HIT-CF consortium, funded through the European Commission's Horizon 2020 program. The CHOICES clinical study is part of PTI's broader clinical development strategy for its CFTR modulator candidates that also includes the MORE trial in CF subjects with the most common F508del homozygous genotype.
"The enrollment of more than 500 patients across Europe in the first phase of the HIT-CF project is a testament to the strategic imperative this program holds for both the patient and treatment community," said Geoffrey Gilmartin, M.D., M.M.Sc., Chief Medical Officer of Proteostasis Therapeutics. "With the successful translation of activity from organoids to patients, this study has the potential to usher in a personalized medicine approach to CF. This approach would begin with patients who have less common mutations, but could ultimately serve the broader CF community by delivering personalized treatment choices that maximize benefit based on each patient's responsiveness to therapy."
"We are excited that Proteostasis is participating in the HIT-CF project and supporting our efforts to bring CF treatment to more people across Europe," said Jacquelien Noordhoek, President of CF Europe and representative of the Netherlands Cystic Fibrosis Society (NCFS). "Enrolled individuals are a portion of the approximately 2,300 adults in the European patient registry who are not eligible for any currently approved modulator due to their genotype and the HIT-CF project represents the only option to explore potential benefit of disease modifying drugs for this group. Putting patients with CF first is our highest priority. We are looking forward to continuing our partnerships and providing Europeans with CF the best possible care."
About Organoids
Organoids are cell cultures that grow in a culture dish with properties similar to those of the organ from which they are derived. Because organoids are made from stem cells, they contain the same mutations as the person from whom the biopsies are derived. Investigational drugs which target the basic defect of CF can be used in an organoid system to evaluate rare mutations where the drugs may have a positive effect.
Unlikein vitrosystems such as human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells, which are derived from lungs that have been removed from CF patients, or the engineered rat-derived FRT cell line (which has had false positive clinical results), rectal organoids are cultured from tissues obtained through a minimally invasive and painless procedure from donors who then become eligible to participate in a clinical study. Organoids can provide valuable insights for donors, including their likelihood of achieving improvements in pulmonary function and reductions in sweat chloride concentration with CFTR modulators based on theex vivoresponse to those drugsi.

About HIT-CF Europe
HIT-CF Europe is a research project which aims to provide better treatment and better lives for people with cystic fibrosis (CF) and rare mutations. To achieve this, drug candidates are first tested on patient-derived organoids in qualified laboratories acrossEurope. Subsequently, based on the measured signal in the organoids, a smaller group of patients will be invited to participate in clinical trials with investigational molecules from participating pharmaceutical companies.
All participating centers are part of theEuropean Cystic Fibrosis Society Clinical Trial Network (ECFS-CTN). The project has received funding from theEuropean Union'sHorizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement number 755021. For more information, visitwww.hitcf.org.
