UNT’s next chancellor has pushed the boundaries of space … – Texas Tribune
Posted: August 20, 2017 at 6:28 pm
Lesa Roe hopscotched across the country working her way up the ranks at NASA. And when you spend more than three decades working on projects that push the boundaries of space exploration, its hard to pick the coolest moment of your career.
"Oh my gosh, thats really hard to nail down because theres just too many exciting things to talk about," she says.
Roe managed the research program at the International Space Station and helped launch missions that have discovered new worlds. As an engineer by training, Roe even helped build the space shuttle Endeavor. She installed its communications systems.
But she says the most thrilling moment came in the middle of the night a little more than five years ago.
The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors. Become one.
Roe was in Pasadena California, in the control room as the Curiosity rover was landing on Mars. She says the tension in the room was palpable, with dozens of blue-shirted scientists and engineers anxiously watching their screens.
"Theres what they call seven minutes of terror when you have no communications as the vehicle is going through the atmosphere of Mars," she says.
Most of them had spent their entire careers working on getting a robot the size of a MINI Cooper to the surface of the red planet. So when it landed safely, "everybody just exploded in excitement. And so thats just something that sticks with you forever."
So how do you go from being the No. 2 at NASA an organization with more than 17,000 employees and a $19 billion budget to running university system in Texas? Roe says thereisa connection.
"We really need a well-trained, well-educated workforce coming in to make those tremendous scientific discoveries, to do all of the incredible systems, the design, everything that we do at NASA. And so the University of North Texas systems role is to develop those students that can do that kind of work," she says.
Roe will inherit a growing university system.Theres new law school in Dallas, and a new medical school in the works in Fort Worth. Roe says she wants to make sure graduates are attractive to top employers.
The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors. Become one.
"Every time I talk to students I talk about doing internships and really getting that hands-on experience and seeing what its like and learning and being part of a team even while youre a student in a university," she says.
Roe wants UNT to be inclusive and accessible for people of all economic backgrounds. And personally, shes on a mission to get more women into STEM fields.
"I have a huge passion for young girls seeing yeah, I can do this, I can be a part of it. I was one of those young girls, I was the first to go to college in my family, and so I want to help be that encourager to say you can do this."
And if they need a little inspiration along the way, shes always got that whole Mars landing story to tell them.

Immunotherapy, Nanotech Combine to Kill Cancer Cells More … – Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News
Posted: at 6:27 pm
Scientists at Duke University say they have combined a cancer immunotherapeutic with nanotechnology to improve the efficacy of both therapies in a mouse study. They published their work, "Synergistic Immuno Photothermal Nanotherapy (SYMPHONY) for the Treatment of Unresectable and Metastatic Cancers," in Scientific Reports.
The new approach also attacked satellite tumors and distant cancerous cells, leading to two mice being cured of the disease and one being vaccinated against it.
Using a combination of immune-checkpoint inhibition and plasmonic gold nanostar (GNS)-mediated photothermal therapy, we were able to achieve complete eradication of primary treated tumors and distant untreated tumors in some mice implanted with the MB49 bladder cancer cells, wrote the investigators. Delayed rechallenge with MB49 cancer cells injection in mice that appeared cured by SYMPHONY did not lead to new tumor formation after 60 days observation, indicating that SYMPHONY treatment induced effective long-lasting immunity against MB49 cancer cells.
"The ideal cancer treatment is noninvasive, safe, and uses multiple approaches," said Tuan Vo-Dinh, Ph.D., the R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson Professor of Biomedical Engineering, professor of chemistry, and director of the Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics at Duke University. "We also aim at activating the patient's own immune system to eradicate residual metastatic tumors. If we can create a long-term anticancer immunity, then we'd truly have a cure."
The specific photothermal immunotherapy was developed by Duke researchers and uses lasers and gold nanostars to heat and kill tumors in combination with an immunotherapeutic drug. The technique works based on the ability of nanoparticles to accumulate preferentially within a tumor due to its leaky vasculature, according to the scientists, who add that gold nanostars have the advantage of geometry. With many sharp spikes, they can capture the laser's energy more efficiently, thus permitting them to work with less exposure, making them more effective deeper within a tissue.
"The nanostar spikes work like lightning rods, concentrating the electromagnetic energy at their tips," said Dr. Vo-Dinh. "We've experimented with these gold nanostars to treat tumors before, but we wanted to know if we could also treat tumors we didn't even know were there or tumors that have spread throughout the body."
Dr. Vo-Dinh explained that the body's immune system protects against the growth of cancerous cells. Many tumors, however, overproduce the programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) molecule, which disables T cells so they cannot attack the tumor. A number of drugs are being developed to block the action of PD-L1.
In the study, the Duke team injected bladder cancer cells into both hind legs of a group of mice. After waiting for the tumors to grow, the researchers explored a number of therapies, but only on one of the legs.
Those that received no treatments all quickly succumbed to the cancer, as did those receiving only the gold nanostar phototherapy, because the treatment did nothing to affect the tumor in the untreated leg. While a few mice responded well to the immunotherapy alone, with the drug stalling both tumors, none survived more than 49 days.
The group treated with both the anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy and the gold nanostar phototherapy fared much better, with two of the five mice surviving more than 55 days.
"When a tumor dies, it releases particles that trigger the immune system to attack the remnants," said Dr. Vo-Dinh. "By destroying the primary tumor, we activated the immune system against the remaining cancerous cells, and the immunotherapy prevented them from hiding."
According to Dr. Vo-Dinh, one mouse is still alive almost a year out with zero recurrence of the cancer. When more cancerous cells were injected, the mouse's immune system attacked and destroyed them, demonstrating a vaccine effect in the cured mouse.
The Duke team has plans to follow up with larger cohorts of mice and to work with other clinical researchers to test the treatment on mouse models of brain, breast, and lung cancers.

Global Nanotech-enabled Aircraft Power Solutions Market to Grow … – Markets Insider
Posted: at 6:27 pm
DUBLIN, August 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --
The "Global Nanotech-enabled Aircraft Power Solutions Market 2017-2021" report has been added to Research and Markets' offering.
The global nanotech-enabled aircraft power solutions market to grow at a CAGR of 8.89% during the period 2017-2021.
The report, Global Nanotech-Enabled Aircraft Power Solutions Market 2017-2021, has been prepared based on an in-depth market analysis with inputs from industry experts. The report covers the market landscape and its growth prospects over the coming years. The report also includes a discussion of the key vendors operating in this market.
The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is the emergence of zero-fuel aircraft. Zero-fuel aircraft use photovoltaic panels that absorb energy from the sun and convert them into energy to thrust the engines. Of late, there has been an increasing interest in the commercial and civil sectors for using such aircraft in applications, including agriculture, aerial photography, 3D mapping, wildlife protection, and provision of internet access in remote places. With the growing need for reduction of greenhouse gases emissions, government agencies, in collaboration with private entities, are significantly developing new approaches, such as the use of solar technologies and maximizing the absorption of solar power.
According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is demand for lightweight and fuel-efficient aircraft. To address the challenges arising from global warming and climatic changes, aerospace stakeholders are actively promoting carbon-reducing measures and energy savings. These initiatives are expected to bring down greenhouse gas emissions that have adverse environmental impacts. Since the late 90s, a number of initiatives have been directed toward substantially reducing the fuel consumptions during flight, landing, and taxiing of aircraft.
Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is constrained durability and instability of nanoparticles. The robustness of fuel cell systems is lower compared with the internal combustion engines, particularly in the specific temperature and humidity ranges in which an aircraft driven by a fuel cell would operate. The durability of a commonplace fuel cell stack is half the optimum durability required for its use in commercial aviation.

Where to find your nearest nuclear bunker in the event of WW3 – Coventry Telegraph
Posted: at 6:27 pm
Donald Trump has issued fresh threats towards North Korea - declaring the US military "locked and loaded".
The US President also warned that the communist country's leader "will regret it fast" if he takes any action against American territories or allies.
The warnings came in a cascade of unscripted statements throughout the day, each ratcheting up a rhetorical stand-off between the two nuclear nations.
The US president appeared to draw another red line that would trigger an attack against North Korea and "big, big trouble" for its leader Kim Jong Un.
The comments from Mr Trump have led many to fear the prospect of a Third World War.
Hundreds of thousands of people would be killed if a nuclear blast hit Coventry and Warwickshire.
Imagining the bomb went off at ground level in Broadgate, the city centre would be turned into a 300m wide and 200m deep crater, according to interactive data site Nukemap .
The city would be dependent on outsiders and national agencies for help after the blast.
In the fallout survivors would find dozens of hospitals and medical facilities would have been destroyed.
A dozen fire stations would also have been wiped out.
At the same moment around 200 schools and hundreds of churches, mosques, gurdwaras and temples could have been levelled or badly damaged.
So, where could you find shelter?
Following the end of the Cold War, the nationwide network of bunkers fell into disrepair and were sold off.
Some of the bunkers entered active military service, whilst others were sold off privately.
Local councils also have hardened control rooms which mainly date back to the Cold War and Nuclear era.
However these now act as emergency control rooms, and are not referred to as nuclear bunkers.
Don't panic, though, because there are still a string of bunkers dotted across the country.
And, handily, you can find your nearest one in the West Midlands by clicking here.

Secret North Korea talks with US RESURRECTED to calm WW3 fears, former official declares – Express.co.uk
Posted: at 6:27 pm
GETTY
The talks are being conducted using a New York channel through the United Nations, it has been reported.
Key players in the talks are reported to be Joseph Yun, a former US ambassador to Malaysia and now the US special representative for North Korea policy, and North Korea's senior diplomat, Choe Son Hui, who is head of the Foreign Ministry's North American office.
Previous secret talks between the countries in Norway are understood to have led to the release of American student Otto Warmbier from North Korea.
Robert Einhorn, a former State Department official and now Brookings senior fellow who was involved in the Norway talks, said: "Since that episode, I'm told that the 'New York channel' has been resurrected and there are periodic contacts.
The current back-channel talks between the two nations have been going on for several months, it was reported last week.
Mr Einhorn said the New York channel was resurrected after being interrupted about a year ago when the Obama administration imposed sanctions on North Korea for human rights violations, and also designated dictator Kim Jong Un as one of the targeted individuals.
He said: The North Koreans retaliated by cutting off the New York channel, and what that meant was no official contacts between the United States and North Korea.
Mr Einhorn was also sceptical about the prospect of the US engaging in a formal dialogue with Pyongyang to talk about denuclearisation of North Korea.
GETTY
1 of 9
He said: The impression that the US has is that the North Koreans are not eager for such a dialogue.
The US has indicated that before talks can begin that the North Koreans would have to take some steps to demonstrate their sincerity."
James Carafano, vice president of foreign and defence policy studies at the Heritage Institute, said: "Back-channels are useful tools for sending messages back and forth but they won't be any kind of path forward in terms of setting up negotiations or resolving things.
Meanwhile, the North Korean regime yesterday said that South Korean President Moon Jae-in miserably failed to improve ties between the two nations during his first 100 days in office.
GETTY
Rodong Sinmun, the hermit kingdoms propaganda mouthpiece, said: "In particular, he failed in inter-Korean relations.
He spoke of dialogue and an implementation of inter-Korean agreements, but in reality, he acted in the opposite direction."
Mr Moon marked his 100th day in office on Thursday.
The South Korean Presidents parents were refugees from North Korea.

Kim’s WW3 threat: Rare colour pics show brutal reality of LAST Korean War – Daily Star
Posted: at 6:27 pm
THESE incredible colour pictures capture the brutal reality of the Korean War for Western troops as tensions escalate between Washington and Pyongyang.
DOUG BANKS/MEDIA DRUM WORLD
The shots, sure to worry Kim Jong-un, show UN forces in action during the devastating conflict, which lasted from 1950-1953.
US soldiers are seen firing bazookas, taking cover behind tanks, and training their sights on enemy forces.
The pictures emerge as North Korea and the US ramp up their war of words.
Defence Secretary Jim Mattis last week said continued aggression from Pyongyang could escalate into war very quickly.
Washington and Pyongyang have stoked fears of nuclear conflict since the North Korean tyrant said he was carefully considering an attack on a US military base on Guam earlier this month.
These stunning images of the Korean war were painstakingly colourised by digital colourist and retiree Doug Banks, from Brighton, UK

Donald Trump said the hermit kingdom would be met with fire and fury if it maintained its threats.
The photographs will be a stark reminder of the horrors faced in the last Korean conflict.
They reveal images including three grizzled Royal Marines taking cover in a trench with fixed bayonets and a monster M20 rocket launcher.
One weary US marine is shown huddling against the bitter cold, while another bloodied troop tries to find a moment of solitude.

Two optimistic gunners of the Royal New Zealand Artillerys 16th Field Regiment are pictured peering out of windows in their makeshift hut.
The stunning images were painstakingly rendered by digital colourist and retiree Doug Banks, from Brighton.
He said: I try to create an accurate historical record using layers of colour as if I were painting on a canvas.
The most important thing is to research the image thoroughly before attempting the colouring.
DOUG BANKS/ MEDIA DRUM WORLD
My aim is to establish the media of colourising black and white images in a way that will earn credibility among the purists who think that black and white photos should remain in that way.
I also want to educate those, particularly youngsters, that otherwise would not be interested in dull black and white images that are gathering dust in museums and private collections.
Earlier this month, Daily Star Online uncovered other pics from the conflict showing wounded American troops on the battlefield.
In June, we also revealed colourised World War Two photos that capture dogfights and RAF heroes with their aircraft.
These stunning images have been published in a new book. The amazing shots show in beautiful detail the battle in the skies as the world battled the genocidal Nazi regime

The Korean War began when North Korea invaded South Korea in June 1950.
The UN came to the aid of South Korea with US forces providing the bulwark of resistance.
After three years of fighting, an armistice was signed and the Korean Demilitarised Zone separated North and South Korea.
No peace treaty was agreed and the two Koreas are still technically at war.

Did the Bible predict North Korea starting World War 3 with the US? – Express.co.uk

GETTY
Analysis from the Philadelphia Church of God, claims the danger posed by North Korea is graver than many people realised.
They suggest Pyongyang and despot leader Kim Jong-Un could inflict major damage on the US or other Western nations.
Writing for The Trumpet, the news magazine of the church, Jeremiah Jacques indicates any strike could contribute to the wars and rumors of wars that Jesus Christ warned would occur before the third world war breaks out.
GETTY
End times and the apocalypse have long been linked to possible nuclear war.
The Bible describes that some 2,000 years ago, as Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem with his disciples, he was asked what would happen at the end of the world.
He claimed there would be wars and rumors of wars, as well as fierce international tensions and famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes.
And while Mr Jacques admits this is unlikely to refer to North Korea, he suggested the hermit state could in fact play the role of a trigger to cause the devastating scenes of Revelations.

The analysis said: All of the missiles and nuclear technology the Kim dynasty has been developing over the years will contribute to the unprecedented devastation to occur during that prophesied third world war.
And he claims that although North Korea will not cause WW3 according to the Bible, the world should take its threats and actions seriously.
Trumpet executive editor Stephen Flurry and managing editor Joel Hilliker said: If nothing else, the mere threat of a mentally unstable tyrant in North Korea using nuclear weapons should cause all of us to be asking some very hard questions.
Rising current nuclear tension should provoke us to consider seriously the biblical prophecies of nuclear destruction.
Those prophecies are drawing closer than ever to fulfillment!
It comes after Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California says analysis of the escalating tensions between North Korea and the US suggests a nuclear war between the two superpowers fits into the End Times prophecy.
He said: In the Last Days there is no mention of any nation that would resemble North Korea however the Bible does speak of Iran in the End Times scenario.
You might be surprised to know there is an alignment of sorts between North Korea and Iran.
REUTERS
In fact, former ambassador the United Nations John Bolton recently said if North Korea developed a delivery system for nuclear weapon Iran would have it the next day simply by writing a cheque.
Tensions between North Korea and the United States have escalated in recent weeks with US President Donald Trump and dictator Kim embroiled in a war of words.
Mr Trump warned the US was "locked and loaded" as Kim threatened to strike US territory Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

Using Mushrooms and LSD to Enhance Creativity – How to Use …
Posted: at 6:26 pm
Psychedelics (specifically LSD and Mushrooms) can be extremely helpful to artists or anyone working on creative projects. Because psychedelics help us to see and think without our usual defenses, the artist's ideas are able to sidestep their normal defensive filters (anxiety, competition, fear) resulting in truer, freer, creation. Simply put, the artist is able to hear their own voice more clearly. They know more immediately when they are being real, or being false.
Psychedelics allow us to think outside of the normal framework of time, space, language and the sensory. We may see sounds, or feel colors etc. This opens a new way of thinking about and communicating emotions and ideas. The artist is essentially given a new language. Psychedelics may also bring forth a new understanding of an individuals psyche, the physical world, emotional world, spiritual world, and the artists role in all four.
For creative work we recommend lower doses, so that you are able to focus. Wed suggest LSD doses at or under 50 mcg, and mushroom doses under .5 grams (roughly 2 small caps or an equivalent amount). As everyones sensitivity differs, you may need to experiment to find the right amount for you. When working on a low-dose your goal is not to trip but to open yourself to your own ideas.
Because you may be sitting unmoving for long periods of time as you work, your body may be very stiff toward the end of the day. To reduce stiffness or water retention drink plenty of fluids and try to take several stretching breaks. You may even want to work at a makeshift standing desk for short periods of time. Have snacks or light meals readily available. If you havent eaten all day and still dont feel hungry, eat a banana anyway -- keep your energy up! Hunger affects the mood of your psychedelic experience.
Psychedelics have been misunderstood and misrepresented for decades. That's changing. Please help us share safe, responsible information on using psychedelics by sending this page to friends, and posting to Facebook, Twitter, and Google:

4 Biohacking Facts You Should Know About in 2017 – Techzone360
Posted: at 6:24 pm
Hacking, a term now associated with technology, gained its current meaning in the 1950s when MIT students referred to working on technology as hacking. Today, the image of a hacker is often one of a computer programmer that is tapping into systems and accessing information they shouldnt, but in reality, a hacker is just someone who is cutting and splicing technology into new shapes and forms. Indeed, this idea of breaking things apart and putting them back together again ties into the original definition of hack, which is to cut or sever with repeated irregular or unskillful blows.
When it comes to biohacking, a more recent development in science, it involves combining the idea of hacking with biology. In todays world, biohacking falls into a few distinct categories: 1) grinders, who implant technology into their bodies, 2) health hackers, who use a combination of diet and activity to improve their bodies, 3) DIY biologists, who work in genetics and work on combining different species genetic codes, and 4) researchers and participants in nootropics, a field dedicated to improving cognitive function that is so new that a term like nootropicist has yet to be accepted.
So what does the biohacking industry look like in 2017? Here are four biohacking facts you should know about:
1. Grinders dont use anesthetic
Grinders have yet to receive widespread acceptance, but many of them are out there now. From a magnet in their finger to sense magnetic fields to thermometers to microchips that can act as key cards, grinders are implanting all kinds of technology into their bodies. However, none of these biohack implants are FDA-approved, so doctors arent performing the procedure. This means no anesthesia because whoever does the implanting likely wont have a medical license. Instead, grinders turn to tattoo artists or even do it themselves to get the job done. If you want to become a real-life cyborg, youll have to embrace some pain to get there.
2. Nootropics are all the rage in Silicon Valley
Always looking for the next life hack to boost productivity, entrepreneurs in San Francisco have taken to nootropics to get an edge over their competition and work longer, more productive hours in the hyper-growth tech industry. This behavior has been a trend ever since Bulletproof Coffee appeared in 2009: workers in the tech industry have turned to ingesting odd foods or even fasting once a week, all in the name of increasing productivity. Now entrepreneurs have taken to nootropics, untested cognitive enhancers that make them smarter. There are numerous companies selling nootropics, and some have raised substantial funding, such as Nootrobox, which received $2 million from Andreessen Horowitz. It remains to be seen whether different nootropics combinations of chemicals actually work, but people are nevertheless buying into them, believing that ingesting these chemicals will take their work day to the next level.
3. Scientists can make human tissue out of plants
Pelling Laboratory for Biophysical Manipulation at the University of Ottawa has managed to create a human ear out of a carved apple. In essence, the lab killed and sterilized the apple, leaving a cellulose structure with gaps where the apple cells used to be, and then carved it into the shape of a human ear. They then introduced human cells to the structure, which multiplied and filled it, creating a human-apple hybrid. This technology is in its earliest phase, but upon further development, this technology could become a new means of growing new tissue for grafts and replacing damaged tissue. The possibilities of Pellings technique become more profound when you consider that the cheapest option for growing tissue currently on the market is priced at roughly $800 per cubic centimeter. Pellings apple technique, on the other hand, costs less than 1 cent for the same amount, meaning that tissue replacement could suddenly become a feasible and affordable option for lower economic classes around the world.
4. Anyone can become a biohacker
Biohacking sounds complicated, and sure, creating an ear out of an apple is quite difficult, but anyone can be a biohacker. If youve ever tried cutting sugar or gluten out of your diet, youre a biohacker. Getting a pacemaker, contacts, or hearing aids, all mean that youre a biohacker. While some question whether biotechnology should be available to the masses, its currently possible to start your own lab and biohack genetic code. Projects like The ODIN connect aspiring scientists with affordable tools and everything they need to start their own lab in a garage, and its perfectly legal. Its incredibly difficult to create something dangerous by splicing together different genetic codes, so concern is low. Instead, this community of DIY geneticists and biologists are experimenting to drive progress forward and hopefully one day achieve enough small breakthroughs to change the biohacking industry as a whole.
