The World’s First Album Composed and Produced by an AI Has … – Futurism
Posted: August 22, 2017 at 11:25 pm
A New Kind of Composer
Break Free is the first sone released in a new album by Taryn Southern. The song, indeed, the entire album, features an artist known asAmperbut what looks like a typical collaboration between artists is actually much more than that.
Taryn is no stranger to the music and entertainment industry. She is a singer and digital storyteller who has amassed more than 500 million views on YouTube, and she has over 450 thousand subscribers. On the other hand, Amper is making his debutexcept hes (its?) not a person.
Amper is an artificially intelligent music composer, producer, and performer. The AI was developed by a team of professional musicians and technology experts, and its the the very first AI to compose and produced an entire music album. The album is called I AM AI, and the featured single is set to release on August 21, 2017.
Check out the song Break Free in the video below:
Asfilm composer Drew Silverstein, one of Ampers founders, explained to TechCrunch, Amper isnt meant to act totally on its own, but was designed specifically to work in collaboration with human musicians: One of our core beliefs as a company is that the future of music is going to be created in the collaboration between humans and AI. Wewant that collaborative experience to propel the creative process forward.
That said, the team notes that, contrary to the other songs that have beenreleased by AI composers, the chord structures and instrumentation of Break Free are entirely the work of Ampers AI.
Ultimately, Amper breaks the model followed by todays music-making AIs. Usually, the original work done by the AI is largely reinterpreted by humans. This means that humans are really doing most of the legwork. As the team notes in their press release, the process of releasing AI music has involved humans making signicant manual changesincluding alteration to chords and melodiesto the AI notation.
Thats not the case with Amper. As previously noted, the chord structures and instrumentationis purely Ampers; it just works with manual inputs from the human artist when it comes to style and overall rhythm.
And most notably, Amper can make music through machine learning in just seconds.Heres an example of a song made by Amper,andre-arranged by Taryn.
Yet, while IAMAI may be the first album thats entirely composed and produced by an AI, its not the first time an AI has displayed creativity in music or in other arts.
For example, an AI called Aiva has been taught to compose classical music, like how DeepBach was designed to create music inspired by Baroque artist Johann Sebastian Bach. With this in mind, the album is likely just the first step into a new eraan era in which humans will share artistry (and perhaps even compete creatively) with AI.
Editors Note: This article has been updated to clarify what songs were made by Amper and rearranged by Taryn.

Astrophysicists Believe They’ve Found Another Earth-Like Planet in … – Futurism
Posted: at 11:25 pm
In BriefAstrophysicists have discovered a probable Earth-likeexoplanet that is 23 light-years closer than the Trappist-1 system. It has sparked new hope for finding extraterrestrial life in theuniverse. Hope for Exoplanets
Last year, the Trappist-1 system was discovered, and it reignitedhumanitys hope of finding planets that could one day (or currently) sustain life. Butthere has been much debate over the probability that planets within that system, which is located 39 light-years away, could hold life as we know it. While Trappist planets might fall within what is known as the habitable zone, other factors, such as the factthat they orbit a red dwarf, might make them less prone to sustaining life than initially thought.
This uncertainty might get you down until you read that astrophysicistsat the University of Texas at Arlington(UTA) have predicted the existence of a much closer planet that is Earth-like in nature. Published as Dynamics of a probable Earth-Like Planet in the GJ 832 System in The Astrophysical Journal, this planet is only 16 light-years away, within the star system Gliese 832, and it appears to be both stable and Earth-like.
Lead author Suman Satyal, UTA physics researcher, stated in an UTA press release that, According to our calculations, this hypothetical alien world would probably have a mass between 1 to 15 Earths masses.
This is an important breakthrough demonstrating the possible existence of a potential new planet orbiting a star close to our own, UTA Physics Chair Alexander Weiss said in the press release. The fact that Dr. Satyal was able to demonstrate that the planet could maintain a stable orbit in the habitable zone of a red dwarf for more than 1 billion years is extremely impressive and demonstrates the world class capabilities of our departments astrophysics group.
According to Satyal, The existence of this possible planet is supported by long-term orbital stability of the system, orbital dynamics and the synthetic radial velocity signal analysisAt the same time, a significantly large number of radial velocity observations, transit method studies, as well as direct imaging are still needed to confirm the presence of possible new planets in the Gliese 832 system.
So, it is not yet 100 percent certain that this unicorn of a planet exists. However, these predictions are strongly supported by evidence garnered by the research group. But what could this mean if and when these scientists prove the existence of such a planet?
Technologies which allow us to explore further and further into the cosmos continue to develop. From SpaceXs advances to the Breakthrough Initiatives, it is becoming ever-more possible to reach previously unseen corners of the universe. Now, Mars is only an average of 12.5 light-minutes from Earth, so 16 light-years might seem like an unconquerable distance.
However, compared to the distances of other promising exoplanets, this could be one of the best shots we have to survey and study an exoplanet that fits many habitable criteria. The exploration of the universe is a never-ending journey that will only continue to further our knowledge and curiosity.

Elon Musk Leads AI Experts With Letter Urging UN to Consider Threat of Autonomous Weapons – Futurism
Posted: at 11:25 pm
In Brief In an open letter addressed to a special convention set up by the United Nations to study the implications of autonomous weapons, a group of 116 AI experts urged decisive and immediate regulation. A Clear Danger
Elon Musk has long been warning us against the dangers he believes to be inherent to unregulated artificial intelligence (AI) development. Hes called the threathumankinds biggest risk, and even said that its greater than any threat posed by North Korea. While some AI experts have criticized Musk for this, the OpenAI CEO is hardly the only one in the industry thats offered warnings about the potential danger of AI systems.
In fact, 115 other experts including DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman have joinedMusk in calling for stronger regulation for AI. As companies building the technologies in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics that may be repurposed to develop autonomous weapons, we feel especially responsible in raising this alarm, the group wrote in an open letter to the United Nations Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW). Lethal autonomous weapons threaten to become the third revolution in warfare.
The UN has just created the Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS), which will discuss and study the implications of modern weapons powered by AI. Musk, Suleyman, and the other experts urge the UN to act decisively and clearly on the matter, urging them to work hard at finding means to prevent an arms race in these weapons, to protect civilians from their misuse, and to avoid the destabilizing effects of these technologies.
The group of experts, obviously, arent against developing AI after all, theyre all involved in AI work from 26 countries. The problem is how AI is used: the group is wary of is using the technology to build autonomous weapon systems, a trend thats already begun.
Unlike other potential manifestations of AI which still remain in the realm of science fiction, autonomous weapons systems are on the cusp of development right now and have a very real potential to cause significant harm to innocent people along with global instability, Clearpath Robotics founder and one of the signatories Ryan Gariepytold The Guardian.
Their letter continues: Once developed, they will permit armed conflict to be fought at a scale greater than ever, and at timescales faster than humans can comprehend. These can be weapons of terror, weapons that despots and terrorists use against innocent populations, and weapons hacked to behave in undesirable ways.
And asMusk has been sayingin regards to AI all along nows the best time do implement all the regulation necessary. We do not have long to act, he said earlier this month, Once this Pandoras box is opened, it will be hard to close.

China Is Reviving the World’s Fastest Train – Futurism
Posted: at 11:25 pm
In Brief After 6 years, China is reclaiming its title for the world's fastest train. In September, a new series of bullet trains capable of reaching speeds of 400 km/h (248 mph) will go into operation.
China once held the title for the worlds fastest train, but a devastating crash in 2011 forced the country to slow down their transits, lest they experience another tragic event.
Next month, however, China will regain is lost title, as it plans to introduce several new bullet trains that will move at the speeds necessary to once again be the worlds fastest. Prior to the aforementioned accident, Chinas bullet trains traveled at 350 km/h (217 mph), but were then reduced to 250-300 km/h (155-186 mph).
Come September 21, when the new trains are up and running, speeds will return to 350 km/h, but will be capable of going 400 km/h (248 mph). For comparison, the still-in-development Hyperloop One recently reached speeds of 308 km/h (192 mph), though the plan is to hit 402 km/h (250 mph) while still in testing.
Zhao Jian, Beijing Jiaotong University professor and a leading researcher on Chinas high-speed railway network, told the South China Morning Post that in order to avoid more accidents at higher speeds, the railway operator will need to reduce the number of trains in use at one time.
According to the Associated Press, China has laid over 20,000 kilometers (12,400 miles) of high-speed rail, and intends to add another 10,000 kilometers (6,214 miles) by 2020. To date, over $360 billion has been spent on the railways creation.

THE FUTURIST: Economic and existential concerns cloud the future – Sarasota Herald-Tribune
Posted: at 11:24 pm
By David Houle
September is a month that has had a lot of meaning for most members of the Silent Generation and the Baby Boomers through their lives.
It was the month when most of us went back to school or off to college. It was the start of the traditional TV season back when there were just a few channels. It was the month when the new car models were revealed by the Detroit automakers.
Labor Day was the official end of summer and it was back to the realities of work and school. Summer romances quickly receded as a result. Back to life and the new possibilities. Summer vacation was over.
(When did it become a reality that K-12 schools and colleges started their school years by mid-August? When and why did that happen? School got out in early June and began again in early September. Remember those last two weeks of August when the summer job ended and you had a couple of weeks of hazy summer days? What happened to that seasonal rhythm?)
Well, as we move into September this year, there are a lot of events ahead that could profoundly shape the business and investment landscapes. It is a month when active investors need to pay close attention to non-financial news.
Nuclear war
This is the only part that feels like the old days. For my entire life until I was into my 40s, mutually assured destruction was simply an existential reality. This time, of course, we have shouted boasting from two leaders who seem to have little perspective on what nuclear war truly would be.
I dont think this will happen. But if any type of conflict arises, the equities markets will do a fast and probably prolonged swan dive to substantially lower valuations.
The inability of Congress and the president to get anything done.
History suggests that when either party controls the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives, that party would move quickly and efficiently on a legislative agenda. Not in 2017. I cannot remember any time in my life and perhaps in history when a party in control of the executive and legislative branches was so incapable of governing. I would say the same thing if it were Democrats.
This inability to work for the benefit of America is dangerous and could have profoundly negative economic consequences.
Health care represents 17 percent of the nations GDP and currently is in a state of suspended animation and uncertainty. Not good.
The all talk, no action on much-needed infrastructure funding needs will be a true drag on the economy. Crumbling roads, a reported 10,000 bridges in critical condition of collapse, railroad tracks in complete disrepair, an aging air traffic control system and even the crumbling of the New York City subway system are all a drag on the economy and a danger to citizens. Imagine the consequences if no acceptable infrastructure bill gets passed and there are several train crashes and collapsed bridges that take American lives because of the absence of leadership and intelligent action in Washington.
Economic issues
Of course, there are truly significant economic events ahead in September that have the capacity to cause havoc with almost any investment portfolio.
First, there is the need to raise the debt ceiling by the end of the month to avoid a government shutdown. Our national debt is $20 trillion and our unsecured indebtedness as a country is close to $100 trillion.
Take the current ineffectual political leadership and layer on top of it the politicians who have spent a lot of hot air talking about the need for a balanced budget and what do you have?
Which bad option will they embrace? A call to keep the debt ceiling where it is, triggering a default? Or passage of legislation raising the debt ceiling and increasing the leveraged state of the country?
A default would have massively negative effects on financial markets. An increase in the debt ceiling continues what seems to be a path to ultimate default and will have a lesser but still significant effect on markets.
The Republicans have stated consistently they want to pass a tax-reform bill that simplifies the tax code and lowers taxes. It is hard to see how this can happen any time during the debt-ceiling discussions.
Am I delusional or are our elected officials?
As a now full-time resident of Sarasota, I look forward to September and October as those months of perfect weather when the snowbirds and winter tourists have yet to clog our streets and restaurants. On the political and financial fronts, however, September 2017 may well prove to be an extremely nervous, unsettling and perhaps negative time for investors and business people.
Pay attention and be ready to move quickly with your portfolios.

New series of The Futurist Report explains effects of AI – IT News Africa – IT News Africa
Posted: at 11:24 pm
August 21, 2017 East Africa, General, North Africa, Southern Africa, West Africa
The new The Futurist Report explains how artificial intelligence (AI) and automation will affect the way we live our lives.
Ericsson, together with AT&T Foundry and RocketSpace have released the third series of TheFuturist Report. The report gives an inside look into the cutting-edge technologies and companies that are shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI), and what this means for consumers.
Over 50 successful entrepreneurs, executives and academics leading the charge on new technologies and applications were interviewed tobetter understand developments in the AI space.
The report also explains how artificial intelligence and automation will affect the way we live our lives, and how brands will adapt and cater to changing consumer experiences.
AI will have an enormous impact on our daily lives. From enabling hyper-personalisation to saving huge amounts of time on routine tasks, these new tools will fundamentally shift the way we interact with technology in our day-to-day lives.
The impact is already happening in sub-Saharan Africa, with start-ups developing solutions that have the potential to impact key socio-economic issues. For example, a Cape Town based company created an AI system to assist farming consultants in Africa to identify problem areas in crops such as wheat, macadamia nuts, citrus and sugar cane. This technology will enable farmers to develop variable rate fertilisation application maps, predicting the yield of crops and identifying problem areas.
This is one example of how developing markets are adapting AI to address specific issues that are unique to regional challenges while taking advantage of the predicted mobile broadband growth in sub-Saharan Africa.
According to our latest Mobility Report, Mobile Broadband subscriptions in Middle East and Africa are expected to grow by almost 3 times between 2016 and 2022. This clearly illustrates the potential that AI will have across the region with the ability to impact growth in key areas that are critical for economic progress including agriculture, healthcare, education and infrastructure development said Rafiah Ibrahim, President of Ericsson Middle East and Africa.
In addition, five bold projections that showcase how AI will impact the consumer experience in coming years were developed.

PETER MCKENNA: Revisiting General Jeffrey Amherst – The Guardian
Posted: August 20, 2017 at 6:45 pm
But what I think is important to note here is not what he actually says. No, whats most revealing is what he doesnt say. Lockerby professes in his August 15 letter that he is no apologist for Lord Jeffrey. Really! He should re-read out loud his last few letters. To me, he seems intent on painting Amherst in a positive light and casting doubt on those who question his moral failings. He doesnt say anything about the fact that Amherst, who as far as I can tell never stepped foot in P.E.I. or its French equivalent, had nothing but contempt and hatred for Indigenous communities in the whole of British North America. Furthermore, he singles out scholars Bernhard Knollenberg and Philip Ranlet (which Ive examined), who Lockerby uses to buttress his skepticism about Amhersts use of smallpox-infected blankets against Indigenous peoples in Pennsylvania. But it is worth pointing out, since Lockerby missed it, that Knollenberg actually changed his position on Amherst after receiving a letter from Donald H. Kent (editor of Colonel Henry Bouquets papers). Kent informed him there is direct evidence that an attempt was actually made on the Indians with smallpox and that it was an official action. Though Ranlet still challenges this evidence, many historians accept the germ warfare charge. Very few scholars think that Amherst was incapable of such an atrocity given his deep enmity toward Indigenous peoples. Historian Elizabeth Fenn from the University of Colorado published a journal piece in 2000, Biological Warfare in Eighteenth Century North America: Beyond Amherst, where she argues that Amhersts giving/ordering of infected blankets at Fort Pitt may not have been an isolated incident - and that there is evidence of an earlier case by British forces. As for Amherst College, Lockerby neglected to mention that the College has moved to rename the Lord Jeffrey Inn (the only campus building named after him) and to no longer use Lord Jeff in its official communications or symbolism - including the ending of its unofficial Lord Jeff mascot. Most significantly, I found it curious that Lockerby would not indicate whether he supports the Mikmaq legal claim to the 400-plus acre Mill River golf resort. Perhaps that omission says more about whats in Lockerbys heart and mind than anything else. Finally, Id like to reassure Mr. Lockerby that I have indeed been doing my homework. Ive corresponded with two Parks Canada experts on Fortress Louisbourg, communicated with Saint Marys University historian John Reid (a leading expert on the Mikmaq of Nova Scotia) and have perused John Knoxs book, An Historical Journal of the Campaigns in North America. None of them paint Amherst and his engagement with Indigenous peoples in a positive light. But Im still digging. Can Lockerby say the same? Right now, though, I should get back to my own book on Stephen Harper for the University of Toronto Press.

A plan for racial healing and transformation in Santa Fe – NMPolitics.net
Posted: at 6:45 pm
COMMENTARY:Throughout Santa Fes history of cultural conflict, weve seen a lot of pain to go along with the beautiful diversity we have today. Weve seen Native people being oppressed and violently conquered. Weve seen Hispanic people marginalized and oppressed by a new Anglo-centric government. And we still to this day see inequality and poverty in those communities as a result of that historic oppression.

Javier Gonzales
As we put it in our Council-adopted cultural roadmap,Culture Connects Santa Fe,Santa Feans live in a place where joy and pain co-exist, and yet, here beauty and creativity hold transformative power for the entire community.
In a few short weeks much of our community will gather for theannualFiestas de Santa Fe,an event that reflects that sentiment well. It also reminds us that we have theresponsibility to learnabout and learn from thecomplexhistories in our community, including that of the Fiestas and the Entrada itself.
In doing so we can still show pride in our respective cultures and reflect on the positive contributions that have been made over time.
As we move forward we must do everything possible to start highlighting history where Native/Hispanic cultural traditions have contributed to the richness of our community and are part of our heritage.
I dont think any government can lead or solve this alone. These conversations are difficult and require all of us to participate. In doing so will we can heal and grow stronger.
To that end,Iwill be moving forward to:
Continue leader-to-leader dialogue to seek the counsel of Pueblo leaders. Our Pueblo neighbors are sovereign governments with representatives whose voices must be heard.
Instruct the city manager to,within 30 days, deliver to the public and the governing body either a report or a timeline for a report that includes:
From there, I will ask the City Council to take action consistent with the findings of the managers report.
I believe we can be a leader in racial healing and transformation towards a more unified city, but it will take more than a mayor or city council. It will take our entire community coming together.

Culture of racism and oppression – Cape Coral Daily Breeze
Posted: at 6:45 pm
To the editor:
I appreciate the ongoing discussion by Lee County Commission Frank Mann and Mr. Jame Muwakkil, Lee County NAACP president. However, the changes brought about were inadequate concerning the portrait of Robert E, Lee. The change is in no way revolutionary. In fact, it is not even evolutionary. This amounts to a switch from a fudge brownie to a brownie.
This is a time when we need real change. Changes that will bring changes in culture. Oppression, racism, violence will no longer be tolerated in America.
There is a time for war, a time for peace, but is there a place for peace? Will we allow for that time and place? We are certainly at a low point in America. I don't think we could go much deeper if we think of what happened to politics and the election and the 2016 campaign. Most of the elements of justice, progress, hope and peace in America were neglected. Replace, bury those elements of division.
We embolden, teach and applaud the culture of hate, violence and oppression. Sadly, much of this is carried out through the institution of government. The elements, ornaments that facilitating these behaviors should not be displayed in or supported by government. Nor should they be allowed in places supported by taxes (including titles, for example Lee County).
We should no longer have segregated communities and segregated schools. We should no longer have educational inequalities. The culture of racism in Florida is nurtured by these practices we continue, and many are institutional practices.
Perhaps you and I will soon no longer have to face the embarrassment that occurs when your child sees a person of a different race in the checkout line and respond as if they are seeing a Martian. We know that this is a reflection of the environment we create and the lessons we give.
There can be no change, no peace until we stop teaching bad things.

COLUMN: Confederate monuments are about oppression, not history – Meadville Tribune
Posted: at 6:45 pm
In the wake of the vicious attack on peaceful protestors in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend, it has become clear that a virulent strain of racist, anti-Semitic white supremacist thought has been quietly nurtured across the country.
This movement can be clearly traced to the end of the Civil War and linked to the traitors who fought that war against the United States, and who, almost immediately after their defeat, initiated a campaign of propaganda and re-writing of history which has brought us to this terrible day, over 150 years later.
Sadly, the argument that the preservation of Confederate iconography, statues, monuments and flags is an important part of remembering our history continues to be made by defenders of the white supremacist and Nazi movement in this country. This includes statements made by President Donald Trump, who equated removal of Confederate statues to taking down monuments of President George Washington. But these two are not, in fact, the same.
First, Washington and the Founding Fathers established the United States of America, the country in which we live. I feel that this should be obvious, but it appears to bear repeating: We put up monuments to these men because they started the country that we live in. By contrast, the leaders of the Confederacy were traitors who rebelled against this country, fought a horrible war over it and were soundly defeated. Putting up statues to honor them is like putting up statues of Adolf Hitler to honor World War II. Why should we do that?
And indeed, for many years after the Civil War, we did not. But as black Americans agitated for more rights and as Jim Crow segregation was being enshrined into law in the early part of the 20th century, the Confederate monuments went up at a great pace. This indeed puts the lie to the defenders of these statues. They were raised and dedicated as a visual reminder of Jim Crow and segregation, to ensure that every black American who walked under the shadow of those statues knew his or her place in that society.
It is not coincidence that Hitler himself pointed out the model of Southern segregation and Jim Crow laws as inspiration for his race-based discrimination and eventual genocide. Its in "Mein Kampf" if you want to check, as well as later Nazi propaganda aimed at normalizing their race-based laws discriminating against the Jews.
The next historic spike in construction of Confederate monuments, as well as naming schools after Confederate leaders, happened during the civil rights era of the 1950s and 1960s. This is, again, not a coincidence. George Wallace, the racist governor of Alabama, raised the Confederate battle flag over the capital of his state after calling for segregation forever. So please do tell me how that flag is not a symbol of a racist ideology?
Of course, that last point should now be clear. The murderous Nazis who descended on Charlottesville carried that flag with them wherever they went. They wrapped themselves in Confederate symbols because the brutal, slave-owning regime of the South is their ideal, the future past that they aspire to. As Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens said in his 1863 Cornerstone Speech, Our new government is founded upon ... the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.
There should be no room in our country for statues to these men. History is not made of statues. There are many ways to remember the history of the Confederacy: museums and books are just two great examples. But the monuments, statues, flags and names of the traitors who stood against these United States to preserve slavery do not deserve a place of honor in our society. It is well past time to remove them all.
