US send 12 fighter jets and 200 troops to North Korea’s doorstep amid WW3 fears – Daily Star

Posted: August 2, 2017 at 9:30 am

THE US has revealed it will send 12 fighter jets and 200 airmen to South Korea as tensions with North Korea threaten to erupt into war.

GETTY

The US Air Force will deploy the squadron of F-16 Fighting Falcons to Kunsan Air Base for four months from this month.

Airmen from the 176th Fighter Squadron will join the estimated 28,500 American soldiers, sailors, pilots and Marines currently based in South Korea.

Pacific Air Forces (PAF) said the fighter jets will ensure regional stability and security amid heightened tensions over North Koreas latest missile launch.

The US is still reeling after the communist state tested another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) the second in less than a month last week.

In a statement on its website, PAF said: The United States routinely evaluates readiness and repositions forces as needed to ensure capabilities necessary to meet obligations in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

These deployments demonstrate the continued US commitment to fulfill security responsibilities throughout the Western Pacific and to maintain peace in the region.

The announcement comes just days after the US conducted joint military drills with Japan in response to the missile test.

On Sunday, two US Air Force bombers flew over the Korean peninsula in direct response to Pyongyangs ICBM launch.

On the same day the US shot down a medium-range ballistic missile over the Pacific with its THAAD defence system.

US defence chiefs were said to be considering military options in the wake of the test on Thursday.

Yesterday US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to take further action to protect allies from the totalitarian nation.

Abe said: We have made consistent efforts to resolve the North Korean problem in a peaceful manner, but North Korea has ignored that entirely and escalated the situation in a one-sided way.

But threats do not seem to have deterred supreme leader Kim Jong-un before.

Today the US has detected highly unusual North Korean submarine activity.

A US defence official told CNN that unprecedented levels of submarine activity have been detected.

These include three "cold ejection" tests in July.

Cyberpunk 2077 release date rumours, news and trailers: Everything we know so far – Alphr

Posted: at 9:27 am

CD Projekt Red has a lot of expectation riding on Cyberpunk 2077. Not only is the studios latest title, The Witcher 3, widely regarded as one of the best videogames ever made, its new project is also based on a tabletop roleplaying game thats been capturing imaginations with tales of leather jackets and neon lights since 1988.

The Polish studio has shown its more than capable of handling complex, multi-layered storytelling across a vast open world so the signs are good that the shift from fantasy to science fiction will be a fruitful one. Beyond an initial trailer, however, theres relatively little known for certain about Cyberpunk 2077.

To keep you abreast with all the latest news and rumours, here is our rundown of everything you need to know about Cyberpunk 2077. Well be updating this page as new information surfaces.

Cyberpunk 2077 was revealed way back in 2012, three years before The Witcher 3 was released. This was followed in 2013 by a trailer that said the game would be released when its ready, which isnt a great deal to go on.

Some further hints came in early 2016, in the shape of a company investor call. This noted a timeframe to release Cyberpunk 2077 before June 2019, as well as plans to release two blockbuster RPGs before 2021. It was later clarified that the first of these would be Cyberpunk 2077.

Image 4 of 8

In 2016, a grant of 30 million zloty (around 6 million) from the Polish government was given to CD Projekt RED, to research seamless multiplayer and virtual city creation. That comes with a stipulation that the team delivers something over the next few years. Throw in a 2017 financial results conference, which made mention of progress on Cyberpunk 2077 being quite advanced, and wed say late 2018 or early 2019 is a good bet.

As for which platforms Cyberpunk 2077 will arrive on, the time frame makes it likely that the game will follow a similar release pattern to The Witcher 3 with a release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The main difference will be the inclusion of 4K editions for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.

Back in 2013 CD Projekt RED's managing director Adam Badowski mentioned in a chat to Eurogamer that Cyberpunk 2077 would have multiplayer features, but tapered this by stressing the game would be a predominantly single-player experience.

News at the end of 2016, about the studios grant from the Polish government, also emphasised that the game would push the envelope for seamless multiplayer.

Will Cyberpunk 2077 have a multiplayer shooter mode? Will it be an MMO? Most likely not. Given CD Projekt REDs track record, we doubt the developers will want to stray too far from the scripted narratives that have made the studios name. Instead, expect a form of pervasive multiplayer that will aim to make Night City feel more alive, perhaps in the strand of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, where the paths of other players are seen as ghosts, and where other players can help or hinder progress through the games path.

Another upcoming AAA sci-fi game, Beyond Good and Evil 2, is aiming to straddle the balance between written storytelling and pervasive co-operation and competition although we expect CD Projekt RED to go less in the multiplayer direction than Ubisoft.

CD Projekt RED visual effects artist Jose Teixeira said in 2015 that Cyberpunk 2077 would be far bigger than anything else the studio has done. Part of the stipulation of the Polish government grant was that the developers create "cities of great scale based on the principles of artificial intelligence and automation", so it makes sense for the studio to approach this on a big scale.

The studio has also doubled in size, with more developers allegedly working on Cyberpunk 2077 than those that worked on The Witcher 3 at its most intensive. Not a lithe indie adventure, then.

Image 5 of 8

Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in the Cyberpunk tabletop universe, created by Mike Pondsmith, whos also a consultant on the project. Pondsmiths RPG, mainly known by its second edition name of Cyberpunk 2020, is based in a sprawling fictional metropolis on the US West Coast, called Night City.

Even if youre unfamiliar with the details of Pondsmiths world, youll no doubt be familiar with the Cyberpunk tropes it went some way to solidify. From the novels of William Gibson to films such as Blade Runner, the Cyberpunk style tends to feature (in no particular order) rampant megacorporations, hackers, cybernetic implants, social unrest, artificial intelligence, leather jackets, sex robots, mohawks, hardboiled detectives, neon lights. Expect Night City to have all of these things at some point or another.

Marcin Przybyowicz did stellar work on the atmospheric, if occasionally overpowering, Witcher 3 soundtrack. Hes continuing to work for the studio on Cyberpunk 2077, so itll be interesting to see how the composer works within a genre that already has a very established soundscape.

Image 6 of 8

Set over 50 years after Pondsmiths Cyberpunk 2020, CD Projekt RED has scope to explore technologies and cultures that were nascent in the original tabletop game. One of these will be Braindances virtual reality-like devices that let viewers experience events from the perspectives of other people. "People live someone elses life while sleeping in the gutter," lead gameplay designer Marcin Janiszewski told The Verge. "Its like a new drug."

Given its reverberations with current debates around the limits of immersive technology, wed expect these braindances to be a major part of Cyberpunk 2077s makeup.

One intriguing aspect of Cyberpunk 2077 may be how its creators handle language. While it was only floated as a consideration in 2013, CD Projekt REDs narrative and setting director, Sebastian Stepien, mentioned the possibility of having NPCs speaking in different languages with the player needing a translator implant to interpret what people are saying.

Speaking to dubscore.pl, Stepien said: The idea is to record everything in its original language. If there are, for example, Mexicans in the game, they will speak with slang. All performed by Mexican actors.

"Then a player could try a translating implant, and according to its level, he will get better or worse translation."

Its a very intriguing idea one that could lead to a lot of interesting narrative opportunities from a writing perspective but hasnt yet been confirmed as a definite feature in the game.

Cyberpunk adventure game Technobabylon coming to iOS on August 16 – Phone Arena

Posted: at 9:27 am

Wadjet Eye Games, one of the few studios still making great adventure games, has just announced that its cyberpunk title Technobabylon is coming to iPhone and iPad devices this month.

Starting August 16, fans of the adventure genre will be able to download Technobabylon via App Store. According to developer Wadjet Eye Games, since its launch back in 2015, Technobabylon has become one of its best selling and best-reviewed games.

Adventure games are first about the atmosphere and story, but puzzles are an important aspect as well. Technobabylon has them all covered since Wadjet Eye Games presents it as a Blade Runner meets Police Quest point & click adventure.

Visually, Technobabylon features retro-styled pixel art, so if you can't stand pixelated graphics, you might want to skip this one, although you'll be missing an intense cyberpunk plotline as well.

The story in Technobabylon takes place in the City of Newton, in the year 2087. The game sets you loose in an amazing world where wetware wires people directly to the web, where the cerebral online Trance has replaced almost any need for human interaction.

You'll be investigating a serial Mindjacker who is hijacking the neural wiring of what appear to be normal people. He steals their knowledge and ultimately kills them. It's up to you to find out who's the person behind that dreaded nickname and what drives him to commit those atrocious murders.

‘You’ve done me like a kipper!’: Geoffrey Boycott brilliantly pranked on TMS – Metro

Posted: at 9:27 am

Geoffrey Boycottwas the butt of the joke (Getty)

Geoffrey Boycott was the target of an elaborate prank on Test Match Special on Monday that left him done like a kipper.

While commentating on the England v South Africa Test series, co-presenter Jonathan Agnew claimed he had just been handed a press release from the ICC.

Crickets governing body had taken a decision to downgrade a match involving a Rest of the World team in which Boycott had been involved, stripping it of first class status.

As the information was digested, it was pointed out that former England batsman Boycott had scored a century during the contest.

The knock-on effect was that Boycotts famous 100th first class century achieved in front of his home crowd at Headingley in 1977 was actually his 99th. His real 100th ton was scored inFaisalabad.

During the exchange Boycott became increasingly worked up, labelling the decision ridiculous and the result of politics.

To say its not first class is a nonsense, he said, before adding: Im not bothered, I just think its daft.

See how it unfolded below

With the 40th anniversary of the Headingley century coming around on 11 August, Agnew asked Boycott if he had anything planned to mark the occasion.

Were having a do at our house, he said. Were not cancelling it! Were celebrating it because its nonsense. You cant go changing history like that!

Agnew then pointed out that he himself had been invited to the event, but with it now being to celebrate his 99th century he had been asked along under false pretenses.

Boycott declared: Its a complete mess!

To which Agnew replied: Its also a complete wind-up Geoffrey!

With everyone in the studio audibly laughing, it dawned on Boycott he had been duped.

Is that right! You muppet! Its never! Agnew Ill get you for that, said the Yorkshireman.

Well youve done me a few times but thats the biggest one! Youve done me easy havent you, like a kipper!

Its not difficult, Agnew said before congratulating everyone in on the prank: Good work lads, good team-work.

How Political Correctness Doomed a Broadway Show – LifeZette

Posted: at 9:25 am

When theBroadway musical Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 had to replace former Hamilton cast member Okieriete Oak Onaodowan, the producers turned to Tony Award-winning actor Mandy Patinkin. The problem some people had with this casting decision? Onaodowan is black. Patinkin is white.

Patinkin was to join the play for a limited run from August 15 to September 3 to keep the production running after Onoadowans departure. But given the backlash from the theater community as well as social media outrage, Patinkin backed out of the play.I hear what members of the community have said, and I agree with them. I am a huge fan of Oak and I will, therefore, not be appearing in the show, the Homeland actor tweeted when he bowed out officially on Friday.

Show creator Dave Malloy tweeted an apology to those outraged, saying,We regret our mistake deeply, and wish to express our apologies to everyone who felt hurt and betrayed by these actions. Malloy had also explained that the bringing in of Patinkin was an effort to boost profits with star power, as ticket sales were catastrophically low after August 13, the date that Onaodowan is set to leave the production.

But what's most fascinating about this entire story is this: The musical is based on a portion of the Leo Tolstoy book "War and Peace," which has an entirely white cast of characters. Onoadowan had even previously replaced Josh Groban, who is white, in his role of Pierre. No one complained then. Not only that, but in the book Pierre is described as "an outcast. The awkward, illegitimate son of a dazzlingly wealthy Count, he was educated abroad but returns to Russia now [that] his father's health is in decline."

The casting of a white actor and then a black actor and then finishing with a white actor suggests the producers were doing exactly what should satisfy social justice warriors: They weren't thinking about race. They were hiring the best actors for the job. Why should the role be an exclusively black role after a black actor does a run as the character?

Most people arefamiliar with the #OscarsSoWhite debate of the past few years, a legitimate observation that the Academy Awards historically have been almost exclusively rewarding Caucasian performers. That situation is clearly improving, but the theater has always faced a tricky balancing act between available talent and available roles in plays and musicals.

Unlike cinema, however, Broadway productions have a fairly non-representational audience. Industry research published by Quartz last year showed that a full 83 percent of domestic theatergoers are white while 4.9 percent are Hispanic, 4.8 percent are black, and 3.9 percent are Asian. Almost exactly paralleling that, 84 percent of actors in Broadway plays are white 74 percent in musicals while only 11 percent of plays and 17 percent of musicals have black performers.

The fact of the matter is, too many people who have never actually attended a play or musical are happy to gripe from the sidelines, whatever the imagined slight or offense. And that's what torpedoed Patinkin's chance of playing Pierre in "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812" even though the original actor was white in the production and even though the original character in the novelthe musical's based upon is white.

These are the times we live in, when people look at a tiny facet, a sliver, of a far larger story and make snap, knee-jerk decisions about whether it aligns with their sense of fairness and justice or not. As American humorist Mark Twain once wrote, "Never let truth get in the way of a good story." Perhaps he was ahead of his time.

The Fight for the Fate of Richmond’s Confederate Monuments Begins – LifeZette

Posted: at 9:25 am

First they came for New Orleans Confederate monuments. Then they came for the Johnny Reb memorial to Confederate soldiers in Orlando, Florida. The Robert E. Lee statue in Lee Park in Charlottesville, Virginia, is slated for removal pending a court decision. Now, the forces of political correctness have their sights on the five Confederate monuments that line Richmond, Virginias famed Monument Avenue.

The citys Monument Avenue Commission, established by Mayor Levar Stoney to examine the controversy surrounding the monuments in Richmond, began its deliberations on Monday as the commissions first subcommittee the State of Confederate Memorials Group, which is tasked with reviewing how other localities are handling their Confederate monuments, met to examine the issue.

The commissions three other subcommittees are the Historians Review Group, the New Monuments and Interpretation Group tasked with answering the question if monuments are added, where can they best be erected and interpreted? and the Community Engagement Group. These other subcommittees will all have met by Thursday evening, at which time will be held the first of two public hearings on the monuments.

While the commission is an attempt to examine all sides of the monuments controversy, critics say that the fact the monuments are controversial at all is a symptom of left-wing political correctness run amok.

"Contemporary Americans have a tendency to 'forget who we are' and engage in what has become known as political correctness," said Dr. Lee Cheek, dean of East Georgia State College and a senior fellow at the Alexander Hamilton Institute, to LifeZette. "The advocates of political correctness want to corrupt history for temporary political gains more than they desire to keep or restore it, and their efforts are, sadly, a disease on the body politic."

One such advocate is a local radical left-wing group The Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality, which is transparently calling for the commission to manipulate the odds in favor of removal. Not only does the group wish the commission to declare publicly that it is considering the option of removing them, but it also wants to stack the commission with proponents of removal.

The area NBC affiliate, WWBT, reported: "The Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality are calling on the commission to ... invite Richmonders who have already called for the statues to be removed to be on the commission."

"Put these statues in a museum. Not on public land maintained by my tax dollars for a statue that represents something that I hate with every fiber of my being," Phil Wilayto of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality told WWBT. "As long as this statue is up, we are telling the rest of the world that Richmond thinks Robert E. Lee was a pretty cool fellow and the cause he fought for was noble."

"Mr. Wilayton and others want to destroy an historical consciousness that is necessary for our republic to persevere," said Cheek. "As former Secretary of State Rice argued recently, to 'sanitize' history is to do a disservice to the living and the dead. To so freely and cavalierly dismiss Robert E. Lee, for example, who was a truly great figure in American life, is [to] basically suggest the only important people are those in political favor at present."

Unfortunately, if the now fallen monuments in New Orleans and elsewhere are any indication not to mention the countless other examples of political correctness gone mad Wilayton and his allies may be successful in their anti-Confederate crusade. "The operatives of political correctness in New Orleans and Richmond and in other locales have met with some success of late," he observed.

"With Orwellian irony, they succeeded in having a U.S Navy ship named for a person who hated the Navy (Cesar Chavez) and have imposed 'speech codes' (with the actual purpose of restricting speech) on many college campuses as well as more destructive examples of assaulting First Amendment rights and redefining history," Cheekcontinued.

Ultimately, according to Cheek, an assault upon First Amendment rights is fundamentally at the heart of theLeft's assault upon Confederate monuments. "The greatest threat to Mr. Wilayton and his fellow zealots is an environment in which free and uninhibited discussion and disagreement can take place," he said.

"In fact," Cheek said, "diversity of thought is the opposite of political correctness, and is at the heart of a free society. The advocates of removal are really advocating censorship against free and diverse discussion."
