New study finds minimum wage hikes lead to job automation – Washington Examiner
Posted: August 14, 2017 at 12:09 pm
States that raise their minimum wages may put low-skill workers at risk of having their jobs automated, according to a new academic paper published Monday.
The study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research finds that higher minimum wages are likely to lower employment in manufacturing jobs that can be performed by robots, and hit older, black, and female workers particularly hard.
The paper, which has not yet gone through the peer review process, was written by Grace Lordan of the London School of Economics and David Neumark of the University of California at Irvine, one of the pre-eminent academic analysts of the minimum wage.
It is sure to once again reignite the long-running debate over the effects of higher minimum wages. Many Democrats have called for raising the federal minimum wage from its current rate of $7.25 an hour to $15 in order to increase workers' pay. Democratic-run states and cities have implemented wage floors above the federal level.
The benefits of higher minimum wages, however, would be undercut if workers lose jobs.
The paper warns that increases in the minimum wage "will give incentives for firms to adopt new technologies that replace workers earlier."
Using Census data to compare states with differing minimum wages and a dataset of jobs vulnerable to automation developed by MIT economist David Autor, the study published Monday finds that some workers "are in fact quite vulnerable to job loss because of automation following a minimum wage increase."
The study starts the clock at 1980, but the authors find some evidence that job losses stemming from automation spurred by higher minimum wages might be getting worse in more recent years, possibly because automation is getting better or because the minimum wage hikes are getting bigger. They speculate that in the years ahead, jobs like driving taxis or tending cash registers could be lost to automation.
The debate over the minimum wage picked up this summer in response to a study that found that Seattle's experiment with a $13 minimum wage hurt that city's workers. Groups supportive of higher minimum wages have criticized the research that found that negative result.

Jonathan Wilkins explores how advanced technology can be used to create sustainable solutions and tackle world poverty
The United Nations has reported that almost half of the worlds population lives on less than $2 a day.
On top of this, another billion people are considered living on less and are under the poverty line.
Sustainable development, that is, development that helps solve the problems of today without compromising the needs of future generations, is an important part of decreasing the number of people living in poverty and it is no small task.
Science and technology go hand-in-hand in solving the worlds problems and robotics and automation are the latest innovations set to tackle one of our biggest issues poverty.
The number of people developing advanced technologies, such as robotics and artificial intelligence, to provide creative solutions to real world challenges is on the rise.
Technological development relies on creative initiatives from companies, entrepreneurs and educational institutes, to tackle crises.
To solve these global issues, technologists also need to work with the people affected by them to understand the issues at hand.
With a clear understanding of influencing factors, new technologies can be developed to tackle the problems head on.
The development of this new technology can draw on a number of innovative fields, such as big data, the internet of things (IoT), synthetic biology, 3D printing, quantum computing and drones to name a few. But it is robotics and automation which are making waves.
Developing community robots
In the developed world, robotics and automation are predominantly used in large scale applications, commonly in industrial settings performing tasks such as product assembly or welding.
Personal robots are much less common, as many have limited functionality or are expensive. In more remote and less developed locations, low numbers of personal robots that provide a valuable service could be particularly useful in improving health or agriculture for a community.
In this environment, the robot could act not as a personal robot, but as a community robot performing specific, important functions on a small scale to benefit a group. This type of robot could increase quality of life for local people, and help develop more sustainable, healthy and safe communities.
Potential functions include increasing accessibility to healthcare, performing agricultural work, checking the quality of water or solving design challenges.
Why a robot?
The reasons a robot could benefit a community are similar to the reasons they benefit industrial environments so greatly robots are precise, strong and accurate. These characteristics can be put to use in different ways to suit a particular community's needs.
Once these have been identified, an engineer can develop a robot with the appropriate characteristics.
For example, if it is particularly necessary that the community reduces waste, one solution could be the development of a robot to increase recycling by sensing the contents of different plastics using spectroscopy.
Alternatively, if there is a lack of clean water, a robot could be designed to monitor contamination. In agriculture, communities could use robots to assess soil condition, check the health of plants and animals and cultivate or harvest crops.
These are just a few ways that robots could be deployed to increase the quality of life for those living in developing countries.
One company that is working with local partners to develop robotics for health and environmental applications is We Robotics.
The company co-creates local innovation labs, known as Flying Labs, to help partners identify if robotics solutions may help to overcome the communitys problems.
If a solution is viable, We Robotics works with technology partners to deploy technology for local applications, including transportation and data collection. Technological development using knowledge of the landscape and environment is essential as a part of this process.
Designing the community robot
Robots comprise of several components to enable them to perform their specific functions, including sensors to recognise the environment, motors for actuation and systems for intelligent control.
New designs can take advantage of existing components - by combining these with knowledge of the specific application at hand, engineers can develop new solutions to problems.
If there are limitations to overcome, the designer must take this into account. For example,
in some environments, energy may be a problem.
To tackle this, a designer can combine a wind-up motor or biogas engine with an automated technology for sustainable use without access to electricity.
Robotic components can also be used in isolation or in combination with a human operator as a hybrid system.
For example, using a sensor combined with a human for improved detection or a robot gripper that relies on humans senses.
In developing these robots, education is as important as collaboration. Creative local engineers that are familiar with the environment, culture and challenges can work with either academia or industry to develop the required technology. If this continues, new applications are sure to emerge that benefit communities and provide a useful function.
Robotics can contribute to challenges in developing countries, but robots need adapting to suit niche purposes.
Once developed, these could be applied to help tackle the global poverty crisis, one community at a time.

Tech giant Infosys admits automation is dramatically reducing hiring needs – The Australian Financial Review
Posted: at 12:09 pm
Despite many advocates for artificial intelligence and automation playing down the long-term risk to employment levels, Indian tech giant Infosys has revealed its early adoption of the technology has already dramatically reduced the numbers of people it is hiring.
In an exclusive interview with The Australian Financial Review, Infosyschief operating officer PravinRao said the deployment of artificial intelligence was instrumental in it cutting its annual hiring of new full-time staff by more than 10,000 in 2016-17.
Mr Rao said the company hired6000 full-time employeesin 2016-17, downfrom 17,000 the previous year and had averaged numbersbetween 15,000 and 20,000 in the years since the global financial crisis.
"Our industry's growth is down a bit too, hence the lower number, but we do think the big investments in artificial intelligence and machine learning we've made in the last two years means our number of new recruits willbe below 10,000 a year from now on, at least for the foreseeable future"Mr Raosaid.
However, Mr Rao said Infosyshad so far made nobody redundant because of automation, rather it had "relieved" 11,000 people last year frommanual, repetitive tasks in service linessuch as testing, application development, maintenanceand infrastructure management, and redeployed them to jobs requiring more creativity and imagination, such as user experience design.
Infosyslaunched its first artificial intelligence platform, Mana, last year and Mr Rao said it had already reduced the number of humans required at the company's support desks.
"A big proportion of the tickets are for routine stuff, where 99 per cent of the time it's the same solution, so that's been the low-hanging fruit in terms of automation," Mr Rao said.
The next-generation AI platform, Nia, was released in April amid claims it can assist with more complex business problems, such asforecasting revenues and what products need to be built, understanding customer behaviour, deeply understanding the content of contracts and legal documents, understanding compliance, and fraud.
Infosys was moving its people further up the value chain too, Mr Rao said. Since October 2014 it has trained 140,000 of its 200,000 staff in design thinking a problem-solving strategy at its corporate university in south-western India, and Mr Rao said a more sophisticated level of consulting had resulted.
"We had a large consumer goods client in the UK, four quarters in a row they could not close their books within five days," he said.
"In the past we might have looked at a downstream solution for why their month-end closing programs were failing, they might have ended up spending $30 million on a new package. Instead we were able to put a team on this and find it was data quality issues upstream that were the culprit, so we built a dashboard identifying these and enabling data inputsto be cleaned up in almost real time."
The dashboard has since been built in to a product,HawkEye, which Mr Rao said had clients around the world.
Even though Infosys was not hiring at the rate it once was, Mr Rao said such creativity would always ensure the world created enough jobs for most of its population.
"Things get automated and we move on to new things, it's been happening for all of human history," he said.

Means-test shareholders before compensation...
More than 850bn of public money was thrown at keeping Britains banking sector afloat during the 2007/8 international financial crisis.
Billions more has since been squandered on quantitative easing, in other words artificially stimulating the economy and laying the foundations of an even more damaging crash that will most likely strike at some point in the next fifteen years.
Capitalist doctrine dictates that bailing out criminal fat cats and allowing them to carry on as before without sanctions is a perfectly sensible plan. Imagine if such gracious courtesy were applied to students currently struggling with personal finances!
Jeremy Corbyns election pledge to scrap tuition fees spoke directly to aspirational young people and contributed vastly to his appeal among first-time voters.
It is no happy coincidence that two-thirds of youth voters endorsed a candidate who presented leftist policies such as nationalisation, abandoning the austerity experiment and a 10-an-hour living wage.
The average graduate was in an incredible 44,000 worth of debt last year; students from disadvantaged backgrounds often owe anything up to 60,000 upon completing a three-year degree. The average workers annual salary amounts to around 21,638 after tax.
Interest rates are expected to increase to 6.1% in September, meaning unsustainable escalation of the already exorbitant sums owed and a lifetime of debt slavery, encouraged by declining wages and increased insecure, low-paid work amongst graduates.
Collective student loan debt amounts to more than 100bn, at the time of writing, and this figure is an eye-watering 16.6% increase on last year. Corbyns suggestion that student debts could be written off was well-received amongst the student demographic although this was not technically a commitment as full costings hadnt yet been made.
Britain spends 6.6m each day on lethal nuclear weapons. 123bn is lost to avoided, evaded and uncollected taxes every year. Those two figures combined amount to 8.3 times the entire 2017/8 budget for Wales.
We could also cover the costs by nationalising the bloated financial sector and using the profit for collective betterment.
Id like to propose a means-tested scheme which would require shareholders to prove they are deserving of compensation, on condition of proven need, with meticulous planning and oversight from an elected civil society collective.

Following on from the poor communication issues I have encountered with C2C at Cardiff Council, I cannot believe their latest response to my last email. I requested to meet with them in person to discuss my concerns and have been informed this is not possible. Apparently it is not feasible to meet with every person who requests to meet in person. I have been directed to the ombudsman service. C2C feel they have addressed my compliant satisfactorily.
When did face to face dialogue become an issue for a service funded by the public? How do people without internet access communicate with C2C? Unbelievable, then again maybe not!

GlobaliSation and the development of trade blocs, such as the EU, are highly contentious issues where the good, the bad and the ugly of its consequences are digested daily in the media.
Put simply, globalisation involves a high degree of freedom of movement of goods, services, labour, capital, technology and managerial expertise in response to market incentives and, thus, opportunities.
On the positive side, as a consumer, I am offered considerable choice in that I can log on to Amazon, say, and buy an obscure Metallica live CD from a small distributor in San Diego; on the negative side, we witness low-skilled textile workers in Africa churning out clothing for value-seeking UK customers at relatively low wages (and the UK masses love a bargain at Asda etc).
In summary, the net effect of globalisation is to offer greater consumer choice, increased global output and employment and lower prices. Overall, a good thing.
This issue of freedom of movement of factors of production is crucial within the EU as the resulting single market has generated considerable post-war wealth. I value my nations sovereignty and independence and I deplore the corrupt and suffocating bureaucracy witnessed in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg City. However, I wish to retain the advantages of regionalism expounded above to enable the UK, post-Brexit, to be ultra competitive in global markets. Therefore, it is imperative that we continue to allow talented and scarce employees to migrate here if skill shortage emerge and they will.
Thanks to market forces, skills-shortages are evident when wage rates accelerate upwards eg engineering, IT, healthcare etc. To conclude, it is imperative that we adopt a points-based immigration system, post Brexit, while saying an emphatic NO to any people coming here with relatively little to offer. It really is that simple. Antonio Conte, good; President Maduro, bad.

The Feudal society of 12th century England, was founded upon the universal belief, that there were four levels of humans royal, nobles, commoners and serfs, who were owned like dogs. This distinction was one of genetic breeding, so it was not possible to move from one class to another, but when one married outside ones class, that was strongly condemned and not fully accepted.
This belief about society then shaped the type of economy, that the higher orders owned all the land, wealth and everything else, because they were superior and deserved it. That lasted hundreds of years, and millions of commoners accepted that belief, all their life.
Only 25% of the Conservative Party still hold this view of the human race, that superior breeding sets some persons above all the rest, and so deserve all the privileges and loot of rank.
The other 75% of the Tories have discovered a new theory, that all rich people are superior to the rest of us, because money makes it so, regardless of breeding. These Tories should be congratulated upon this awakening, to find a much wider view of humanity, that any crooked villain should be revered in the upper classes, if he has billions. This wealth then controls or destroys the lives of the lower classes. The right to vote is a tiny power.
Our nations economy is no longer based upon the idea of an unjust, divided society as before, but instead, todays unjust society has been shaped by the corrupt Market economy, which does not even pretend to be honest, compassionate or ethical. Tories believe in money, as the highest guide for humanity.

KING: Stop saying this nation was founded on faith and freedom it was founded on violence and white supremacy – New York Daily News
Posted: at 12:07 pm
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Monday, August 14, 2017, 10:34 AM
As violent, cruel, demeaning white supremacists descended upon Charlottesville, Va., this weekend, and one of the men murdered a woman and injured dozens of others in broad daylight, Donald Trump, the sitting President of the United States, who rose to power with their full support, refused to call them out. Of course he refused. They are his most devoted followers and he has taken great care not to offend or isolate them. Many Republicans, though, did call them out. Senators Orrin Hatch, Marco Rubio and even Ted Cruz made some of the strongest statements from conservatives I've ever read on white supremacy, but one consistent and critically important error was present in so many statements from seemingly well-meaning white men. Those statements, over and over again, said something to the effect that white supremacy has no place in America and that this nation was founded on the principles of faith and freedom.

That's a damn lie. It's as big a lie as a lie can get. It's ahistorical. It's insulting. It's not even in the ballpark of reality. And when civic and business leaders say that this nation was founded on such warm, fuzzy ideals and principles, it reveals many things chief among them just how far we are from actually dismantling the systems of white supremacy and white privilege in this nation.
Before I was a journalist, I was a preacher in Georgia and Kentucky. From the pulpit I liked to use colorful metaphors to explain complex scriptures so that they made more sense for everyday people. If you don't mind, I'd like to lean on that part of my history for a few moments.
Imagine you're in your house and you smell a foul stench. You check your refrigerator and realize that you have some spoiled food in there. That must be it! You get ready to throw it away, open up the garbage can, then realize that something foul seems to be coming from there too. So you bag up the foul garbage with the spoiled food and take it out of the house confident that you have solved the problem only to come back inside to find it smelling worse than ever. You check the bathroom and flush the toilets in case that might be it. No matter what you do, the smell won't go away. It's getting so bad that you can hardly stand it. You are now feeling light-headed. Then, you notice on the television that people are evacuating their homes on a street that looks very, very familiar. It's your street. On the television, you see a home that looks like your home and a car that looks like your car. On the television screen, smoke is enveloping the home and car that look like they are yours.
Charlottesville mayor says Trump campaign emboldened hate groups
The news caption reads, "Neighborhood built on toxic waste dump about to explode."
The smell that you thought was leftovers in the fridge or fish in the garbage or a turd in the toilet was none of those things. Your home is built on a ticking time bomb of toxic waste.
Ted Cruz and Orrin Hatch and Marco Rubio each spoke of white supremacy and neo-Nazism as if it could be easily flushed down the toilet with a tweet, wink and a nod. This is as dangerous a denial of the past, present and future of this country as we could ever have.
America was not built on kindness or the Christianity of Christ. It was not built on freedom or liberty. This nation was built on white supremacy. Its founders owned human beings that they worked to death and raped at will for sexual pleasure. The indigenous people were slaughtered and terrorized for land and profit. Not for years, or decades, but for centuries, this nation exploited and victimized every single person who was not a white man denying them all the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness denying them all the right to vote, the right to safety, the right to dignity.
Jason Kessler shouted down at Charlottesville news conference
We have women in this nation who were born before women were allowed to vote. A black woman who voted in this past presidential election was the daughter of slaves! Donald Trump's own father was reportedly arrested at a KKK rally 90 years ago this summer (something Donald Trump has refuted). Right here in New York City Nazis held a rally in Madison Square Garden.
So don't tell me this nation was founded on faith and freedom. It was founded on oppression and violence. What we're seeing in Charlottesville isn't un-American. NO! That violence and bigotry are as American as it gets.

by: KIRO 7 News Staff Updated: Aug 14, 2017 - 7:44 AM
SEATTLE - Seattle police say they arrested three men as hundreds of demonstrators and counter-protesters converged downtown Seattle one day after violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The rally organized by the conservative pro-Trump group known as Patriot Prayer and a counter protest aimed at standing against hate were planned for Sunday.
A barricade separated the groups of protesters in downtown Seattle. Police officers stood by dressed in black, riot gear. Police said they used pepper spray and blast balls to disperse crowds after fireworks were thrown at officers.
Those arrested were a 40-year-old man for obstruction, a 37-year-old man for assault and a 25-year old-man for assault.
It all began peacefully enough as hundreds of activists stepped off from Denny Park just before 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Counter protesters included members of the Veterans for Peace, Socialist Party, Washington Federation of State Workers and other groups.
Counter-protesters marched from Denny Park through downtown Seattle to Westlake Park, but many of those protesters were prevented from reaching the freedom rally.
But some counter-protesters did make it.
During the rally, some of the demonstrators began trying to run past Seattle police. When that didn't work, they tried taunting the officers with silly string. As the crowd surged toward police, they were doused with pepper spray.
Council member Mike O'Brien expressed frustration over the crowd being kept away from Westlake Park.
"Why weren't the demonstrators not allowed to get to Westlake Park?" O'Brien said. "I don't know what the call was. I'm not in a position to second guess that at the moment." He added he would like to find out why police prohibited the crowd from reaching Westlake Park.
Many marchers said they were there to simply take a stand, especially after what happened in Charlottesville.
"They are missing out on the love that exists here on the other side," said Rev. Priscilla Paris Austin, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in South Lake Union. "If they can push themselves through to see past their fear, they can find the love that exists here for them as well."
The pro-Trump group "Patriot Prayer" gathered for a rally in Westlake Park that it billed as in support of freedom and free speech.
On its Facebook page, the Patriot Prayer groups posted:
Seattle is running our state with a pedophile as a mayor. The West Coast has slowly been infected with communist ideologies throughout our entire culture. It is a belief that the individual is weak and that we are all victims. This is the lie of the century. No matter who you are, we are all amazing people with the ability to do anything that we put our minds to. These liberal strongholds run off of hatred and negativity. Patriot Prayer will bring in a positive message to Seattle that the people are starving for..
Patriot Prayers first speaker stated a message from the organizers; that the incident in Charlottesville was an act of terrorism and should be denounced, and that white supremacists were not welcome at their event. He called for peace and love and said anyone who attended for racist reasons should leave. He then said that Seattle and Americas values are inclusive values. His message was met by boos by some in the crowd.
The latest on the "Freedom Rally" put on by 'The Patriot Prayer', a conservative group, and the "Solidarity Against Hate" counter-protest in Seattle. All times local.

One of two groups that planned to march in downtown Seattle Sunday has said the group will not march, but gather in light of the violence that erupted at a Charlottesville, Va., rally Saturday.
The Patriot Prayer, a conservative, pro-Trump group, will gather at 2 p.m. at Westlake Park.
Opponents, which include members of the Veterans for Peace, Socialist Party, Washington Federation of State Workers and other groups, had planned to march after the Patriot Prayer group originally announced it would march in Seattle on August 13. They will gather at Denny Park at 1 p.m.
The Patriot Prayer group had touted the event as a Freedom Rally; opponents of their messaging say the group is homophobic, racist and bigoted.
The group has been criticized for inciting violence at recent gatherings in Portland and Vancouver, B.C.The Columbian newspaper recently did a profile on the group's lead, Joey Gibson.

WASHINGTON For advocates of religious freedom, President Trumps appointment of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback to be Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom is a much-needed jolt from an administration that they feel has been otherwise sluggish to act on critical protections for people of faith.
If confirmed, Brownback will be be the U.S. governments representative on religious freedom abroad. He also has the task of advocating within the State Department for a greater focus on the issue, even at times when it may not run in lockstep with economic or military interests.
You need somebody who feels it in his bones and David Saperstein really did feel it in his bones and so does Sam Brownback, this is why Im grateful to president Trump, of whom Ive been a ferocious critic, Robert George said. Rabbi David Saperstein held the ambassador-at-large position most recently during the Obama administration.
On the campaign trail Trump had promised that the first priority of my administration will be to preserve and protect our religious liberty.Trump was able to get conservative Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch confirmed to the bench, a move which religious freedom advocates celebrated.
Early in his presidency Trump was reportedly considering an executive order that would scale back Obama-era protections for gays and lesbians, andreligious freedom advocates pressed him to move forward. But Trump ultimately signed a version that critics including George felt didnt go nearly far enough.
It was so watered down in the end that when it was issued it had no practical significance that I could see, said George, who was chairman of the independent U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom in 2015 and 2016.I do not give the Trump administration high marks at all, so far, on religious freedom issues domestically ... Internationally I think it is too early to tell, but Im hoping.
We think that President Trump made a great choice in picking Brownback, said Emilie Kao,director of the Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Religion & Civil Society at the conservative Heritage Foundation. I think its a very positive step on international religious freedom. I think that theres still much more that the Trump Administration could still do on domestic religious freedom.
I think hes almost made for the job and the job was made for him and he cares deeply so I think its a perfect appointment, former Virginia congressman Frank Wolf told USA TODAY.
Wolf introduced the law the International Religious Freedom Act which created the ambassador-at -large position. Brownback, who was a senator 1998 when the legislation passed, was a key player moving the legislation through the Senate.
Wolf, a who left Congress in 2014 after more than three decades, said the administration is going to do well on religious freedom and the reason we havent seen as muchis because theres no one at home, referring to the fact that the administration is not yet filled critical positions throughout the government.

Certain aspects of religious freedom domestically can be a bitterly partisan, such as battles over whether faith groups can be ordered to provide birth control in employee health insurance plans. But internationally, religious freedomis an overwhelmingly bipartisan issue.
The law that created the ambassador-at-large position, passed in the House by 375-41 and 98-0 in the Senate in 1998. An amendment to the bill in 2016 that strengthened the powers of the office passed by a voice vote in the House and unanimous consent in the Senate.
Saperstein, who was nominated to be ambassador-at-large by then-president Barack Obama, told USA TODAY that the basic areas of religious freedom rights freedom to worship, educate, speak about faith, etc. have broad bipartisan support domestically. The former ambassador-at-large said the friction comes with competing claims, moral claims, between religious liberty rights and other civil rights womens rights and LGBT rights, in particular so there are tensions in these claims. Do people have a religious freedom right to discriminate against other people?
He also cited friction over if corporations have religious freedom rights or if tax-exempt religious institutions can take a political stance, as dividing issues in the U.S.
Saperstein said there are important claims on both sides of these issues but they pale in comparison to the persecution happening abroad. More than three-quarters of the worlds population live in countries where restrictions on religion are either high or very high, according to Pew Research Center.
I pray for the day that the struggles for the religious freedom on a global level will be about whether corporations have religious freedom claims, whether clergy can use tax deductible money to endorse candidates how to best balance out competing claims between religious liberty claims and womens rights and LGBT rights claims, Saperstein said. He said that people around the world are subject to torture, prison and even death for their beliefs.
Saperstein pointed to Brownbacks long track-record of support for religious freedom issues when USA TODAY asked if the Kansas governor was the right pick to take over his job.
Its an issue he knows, he knows well and cares deeply about, Saperstein said.

Andrew Bennett, the Canadian ambassador for religious freedom from2013 to2016, warned that Brownback may find himself arguing with othergovernment agencies over foreign policy.
At times, you know, Gov. Brownback and his office are going to find themselves working against other particular priorities that the United States might have in its foreign policy and so the challenge for Gov. Brownback is going to be to stand up in defense of religious freedom and to speak out, Bennett told USA TODAY.
Despite the bipartisan support for the position, some worry Brownback who has been opposed to strengthening protections for the LGBTcommunity could take the post in the wrong direction.
The position is obviously one that deals with religious discrimination and protecting people from religious persecution around the world which is something that, you know, LGBTQ people share in common. In lots of places where theres reallya lot of persecution that takes the form of religious discrimination, it also takes the form of anti-LGBT discrimination, said David Stacy, the government affairs director for the LGBT advocacy organization Human Rights Campaign.
Brownback has opposed gay marriage and as governor signed a law that allowed university groups to restrict membership, critics said that could lead to discrimination.
With Sam Brownback were certainly very worried that he will promote a particular brand of religion," Stacy said."Religion does not need to be in conflict with LGBT equality, but if you put someone like Sam Brownback in this position,he does view it that way: that its a zero-sum game
Some in Kansas may be happy to see Brownback go, after he ordered sweepingtax cuts that hampered the state's economy and narrowly won re-election in 2016.
Sam Brownback will be remembered for becoming the most unpopular governor in America. His tax experiment failed to grow the economy as he had promised, Kansas State Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley tweeted after Brownback was nominated.
