Psychedelic drugs saved my life. So why aren’t they prescribed? – Wired.co.uk

Mike McQuade
The world is in the throes of a mental-health crisis, as depression and dementia afflict spiralling numbers of people.
In March 2017, the World Health Organization declared that depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. More than 300 million people are living with it, an increase of more than 18 per cent between 2005 and 2015. But help is at hand - if we can reach out and grasp it.
A group of drugs long considered taboo is poised to transform the way we treat mental health. Recent research suggests that psychedelics - once regarded as a relic of the hippy-dippy 60s - could prove powerful tools not only to treat, but also potentially cure, many mental health problems regarded as chronic.
Psychedelics do something that our current go-to psychiatric drugs cannot: transform hardwired neural patterns to reroute the very architecture of the brain, sometimes in a single dose. Roland Griffiths, a professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, has likened psychedelics' ability to bring about neural rerouting as akin to a "surgical intervention".
Take psilocybin, better known as magic mushrooms. A single dose of the drug can do "in 30 seconds what it takes antidepressants three to four weeks to do", according to David Nutt, professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London.
A study published in the Journal of Psycho-pharmacology on people with anxiety associated with life-threatening illness suggested that LSD-assisted psychotherapy was successful in almost 70 per cent of subjects, with the positive effects lasting more than a year and causing no lasting adverse reactions.
Given the overwhelmingly positive results of these and other trials, one would think the clinical use of psychedelics would represent a sea change in our approach to mental-health treatment. But, sadly, outdated societal prejudice against psychedelics is proving a formidable handicap, hampering research and keeping many in need from reaping the benefits.
Strict anti-drug legislation that still criminalises the use of such substances has pushed psychedelic-assisted treatments underground: unless you are among the lucky few accepted into a clinical trial, your only options are to find an unlicensed practitioner, attempt to do it yourself illegally or travel to places where the compounds are legal.
Growing numbers of people are doing just that, and in recent months, there has been flurry of articles on the topic which have stoked curiosity about the potential of psychedelics. In April of this year, the Psychedelic Science Conference in California was attended by more than 3,000 people who travelled from across the globe to learn about recent advances. Although it's heartening that more people are finding relief, ad hoc experimentation is not the way to go. We must bring this research into the mainstream, guarantee adequate funding and shield well-intentioned facilitators from criminal prosecution.
I should know. I was once the victim of a violent robbery, which left me shattered. Out of desperation I turned to psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. It helped saved my life.
Mental-health practices around the world are in desperate need of an overhaul, and psychedelics could be just the hack we need to achieve such fundamental - and indispensable - change. I believe mental health to be a human right, and as such it is nothing short of our duty to follow, and fund, the science.

#OldhamLIVE will take place on Saturday, September 9, under the Parliament Square owls with a line-up that includes a headline set from The Farm, best known for their 1990s baggy anthem Altogether No.
The festival has been set up by Oldham Council and independent radio station Revolution 96.2, and promises to be a great day out for the whole family.
Gemma Hunt, popularly known as Gem from the CBeebies hit show Swashbuckle, will kick things off at noon, headlining a pirate-themed, daytime line-up full of magic shows, puppet performances and Prince and Princess singalongs.
Live music gets underway at 6pm with Stooshe, Kelly Lorenna from N-Trance, a Clint Boon DJ set and Nathan Moore from Brother Beyond also joining The Farm on the bill.
Oldham Council Leader, Jean Stretton, said she was very excited to begin counting down until the big day.
This festival will plug a gap in Oldhams entertainment offer and its great news for residents, families, music lovers, visitors and town centre traders," she said.
Weve got some brilliant local live music venues and events but the new Parliament Square gives us the chance to deliver something extra.
This is a festival with a line-up of established acts and entertainment where families can have fun and enjoy some of the best-selling artists of recent years and all for free.
Were working with Revolution 96.2 doing our bit to promote Oldham and to give families a top day out.
Your bit is to simply come along, enjoy yourselves, spread the word and help to give our local economy a real boost on the day.
Managing Director at Revolution 96.2 Matt Ramsbottom also had positive things to say about the upcoming event.
He said: This is brilliant news for Oldham a real first for the town centre and were excited to be making this happen.
Theres going to be something on offer for everyone at #OldhamLIVE.
The pirate-themed kids show is bound to be a real hit and great fun, and weve tried hard with the music line-up to suit all kinds of tastes.
There are acts on the bill for the nostalgic from the 80s, 90s, Noughties and now.
DJs Elliot Eastwick and Dave Sweetmore from the radio station will lead the Parliament Square crowds through the event.
Local businesses are encouraged to capitalise on the festival and promote special offers for the day using the #OldhamLIVE hashtag on social media.
#OldhamLIVE falls on the final day of the Your Oldham Festival which aims to celebrate the great co-operative activities happening across the borough.
From 10am to 2pm on the same day families can enjoy the Your Future event at Oldham Library.
From creating futuristic pieces of artwork at one of the craft sessions, to duelling with Darth Vader or dancing with royal guests, there should be something for everyone.

Archangel Successfully Brings William Gibson’s Cyberpunk to Comics – CBR (blog)

For all its cool, grit, and darkness, it can be easy to miss the humor in William Gibsons work. From Neuromancer to his scattered forays into culture criticism, theres always been a current of sharp wit beneath his techno-apocalyptic topsoil. Hop over to Twitter, where Gibsons handle is @GreatDismal, and youll find his timeline littered with retweets of missives both dire and hilarious.
Archangel, the foundational cyberpunk authors first foray into comics, alongside co-writer Michael St. John Smith and artists Butch Guice, Alejandro Barrionuevo and Wagner Reis, isnt funny haha, but in the series final panel, its clear the narrative hinges on a bleak, cosmic joke. As the sci-fi adventure concludes, our unnamed, tattooed hero, the Pilot finds himself in 2016. Fresh from preventing the deranged Vice President Junior Henderson from rearranging history back in 1945, the Pilot finds his worlds no longer an irradiated wasteland, but its well, its something else. Something familiar. Its a classic Twilight Zone twist, asking: What if all the timelines are pretty bad? What if the true dystopia is whatever dystopia you happen to inhabit?
REALTED: Neuromancer Author William Gibson Warps Comics, Reality in IDWs Archangel
change winds have been blowing over Archangel since we began to publish, Gibson writes in the afterword. For those doing the math, issue one debuted in May 2016, and its five issues came out every couple months throughout one of the strangest presidential elections in history. The book concluded this month. Power-hungry politicians, complicated conspiracies involving Russia, U.K. and U.S. agents caught between shifting national allegiances, strong-willed operatives pondering the justification of their actions Archangels felt at times deliriously contemporary. But its never felt pedantic, employing a pulpy, quick tone that renders it an utter blast. Filled with wild shoot-outs, far-out technological concepts, and hilarious dialogue, and its easy to see why the book earned an Eisner nomination for Best Limited Series. No matter how heady or dense, Archangel zings by, charged with electricity.
Stepping in for Guice, Reis and inker Tom Palmer do a terrific job with the final chapter. The issues almost exclusively devoted to climactic action. Set mostly in a plane carrying a B-29 bomb above the Russian port at Archangel, the fights are confined to a cramped, claustrophobic setting, but Reis makes the most of the limited space, focusing on tight, close expressions and the occasional splashy outburst. Though they originally intended Archangel for television, Gibson and St. John Smith seem perfectly at home in with the graphic format, focusing on a few key characters and tossing the reader directly into the fray. They delight in each BLAM and KRAK sound effect.
Though Gibson and St. Michael keep the story relatively streamlined, they subtly riff on big concepts, too, making clear that no matter the outcome of war be it World War II or some distant future conflict the human toll is always high. In some cases, it means sacrifice like the one Major Torres, operator of the Splitter which sent the Pilot back, undertakes to complete her mission but often it means bystanders, collateral damage. Soon, well know the number dead. Like London. Berlin. Dresden number, but not their names, British operative Dr. Naomi Givens says upon learning of the successful bombing of Nagasaki. In Archangel, immense loss of life is a given. The places and people change, but no matter whos ordering the bombs dropped, they always fall. Perhaps thats what makes the end of the series so effective. For all the time travel, sophisticated weapons technology, and loopy violence, something about it all seems so plausible.
Its been a great time for literary figures in comics, with writers like Ta-Nehisi Coates, R.L. Stine, Margaret Atwood, Benjamin Percy, Roxane Gay and others recently putting forth compelling work in the medium. After decades of his novels powerfully influencing comics and manga, you can add Gibsons name to the list. With Archangel wrapped, heres hoping his jacked-in prophet in the wilderness voice makes it way back to the page soon. The more absurd our present gets as it morphs into the future, the more we need imaginative cackling like his to accompany the process.

‘Observer’ news: Cyberpunk horror game to be released this month – ChristianToday
Posted: at 4:18 am
Cyberpunk-themed horror game "Observer" is set to be released on Aug. 15 on Linux, Microsoft Windows, MacOs, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is made by the same developers of "Layers of Fear" which was released in February 2016.
Made by Polish video game developers Bloober Team, "Observer" displays some of the elements and visuals that "Layers of Fear" had. The atmosphere in the game is very tension-filled, and not many details about the world is revealed just enough to keep players going.
The story is set in the year 2084, in Krakow Poland where people have learned to cybernetically enhance themselves to improve upon today's daily life. This is not a far-fetched idea, given that technological advancements might allow for the ability to surgically fuse smartphones into people's biology in order for humans to be more efficient.
Players take the role of Daniel Lazarski, a detective equipped with special machine enhancements that allow him to outclass any of the best detectives around the world today. His objective is to solve a series of murder and violence which occurs. This leads him to the setting's poor community. As it would appear, the investigation might lead Daniel to something he might eventually regret.
The main protagonist of the film will be voiced by Rutger Hauer, widely known to play the baddy in 1982's "Bladerunner," the popular film made by Ridley Scott. Hauer's voice, being very deep and raspy, provides a menacing tone that adds to the already dark setting of the game. His voice might also catch the attention of players as they might find it very familiar. This is because he has had a very prolific career in movies, even to this day. In his IMDBpage, it is shown that he has appeared in four movies in this year alone.
"Observer" is a welcome addition to the horror genre in video games, and it will become available starting Aug. 15.

Volume Moving the Tape For Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) – Clayton News

Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) shares are moving today onvolatility-11.11% or $-0.005 from the open.TheTSXV listed companysaw a recent bid of0.04 and100000shares have traded hands in the session.
Investors often have to make the decision of how aggressive they are going to invest. Some investors looking to make a quick dollar may jump in head first without a plan. This can be dangerous for the health of the portfolio in the long-term. Taking a chance on a risky stock may provide high returns, but investors often need to calculate whether the risk is worth the reward. Managing that risk in turbulent markets may help keep the average investor afloat when the markets inevitably turn sour for an extended period. Doing all the necessary stock research may include keeping a close tab on technicals, fundamentals, relevant economic data, and earnings reports. Investors may have to find a way to keep the rational side from being consumed by irrational behavior when studying the markets.
Now letstake a look at how the fundamentals are stacking up for Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V). Fundamental analysis takes into consideration market, industry and stock conditions to help determine if the shares are correctly valued. Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. currently has a yearly EPS of -0.11. This number is derived from the total net income divided by shares outstanding. In other words, EPS reveals how profitable a company is on a share owner basis.
Another key indicator that can help investors determine if a stock might be a quality investment is the Return on Equity or ROE. Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) currently has Return on Equity of -124.73. ROE is a ratio that measures profits generated from the investments received from shareholders. In other words, the ratio reveals how effective the firm is at turning shareholder investment into company profits. A company with high ROE typically reflects well on management and how well a company is run at a high level. A firm with a lower ROE might encourage potential investors to dig further to see why profits arent being generated from shareholder money.
Another ratio we can look at is the Return on Invested Capital or more commonly referred to as ROIC. Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) has a current ROIC of -108.54. ROIC is calculated by dividing Net Income Dividends by Total Capital Invested.
Similar to ROE, ROIC measures how effectively company management is using invested capital to generate company income. A high ROIC number typically reflects positively on company management while a low number typically reflects the opposite.
Turning to Return on Assets or ROA, Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) has a current ROA of -95.05. This is a profitability ratio that measures net income generated from total company assets during a given period. This ratio reveals how quick a company can turn its assets into profits. In other words, the ratio provides insight into the profitability of a firms assets. The ratio is calculated by dividing total net income by the average total assets. A higher ROA compared to peers in the same industry, would suggest that company management is able to effectively generate profits from their assets. Similar to the other ratios, a lower number might raise red flags about managements ability when compared to other companies in a similar sector.

What Do The Technicals Boil Down To For Edap Tms SA (EDAP … – JCTY News
Posted: at 4:18 am
Shares ofEdap Tms SA (EDAP) are on watch as the Tenkan Line has moved belowthe Kijun line, indicating negative momentum for the equity. Edap Tms SA moved-0.01 in the most recent session and touched2.94 on a recent tick.
The Tenkan Line or Tenkan Sen (Sen means line in Japanese) is known as the conversion line or turning line is similar to a 9SMA but actually is quite different. Remember a SMA (simple moving average) will smooth out all the data and make it equal but the Tenkan Line will take the highest high and lowest low over the last 9 periods. The explanation for this is Hosada felt price action and its extremes were more important than smoothing any data because price action represented where buyers/sellers entered and directed the market, thus being more important than averaging or smoothing the data out. As you can see by the chart below, the Tenkan Line is quite different than a 9SMA. Because the TL (Tenkan Line) uses price instead of an averaging or the closing prices, it mirrors price better and is more representative of it. You can see this when the TL flattens in small portions to move with price and its moments of ranging.
Akin to all moving averages, the angle of the Tenkan line is very important as the sharper the angle, the stronger the trend while the flatter the Tenkan, the flatter or lesser the momentum of the move is. However, it is important to not use the Tenkan line as a gauge of the trend but more so the momentum of the move. However, it can act as the first line of defense in a trend and a breaking of it in the opposite direction of the move can often be a sign of the defenses weakening.
Value investors may be scanning the shelves for bargain stocks. They may be looking to spot those shares that havent been doing a whole lot and are being generally overlooked by the investing world. Value investors may be searching for stocks with lower price to earnings ratios that possess higher dividend yields. Investors looking for growth stocks may be willing to shell out a little more for a stock that has the possibility of increasing EPS at a quicker pace. Some investors may favor one category of stocks over another, but they may need to find a combination at some point. As markets tend to move in cycles, it may be necessary to align the portfolio to the category that is best positioned to make consistent gains in the future.
Investors and traders using technical analysis to examine stocks may be interested in taking a look at additional technical indicators such as the ATR or Average True Range. Currently, Edap Tms SA (EDAP) has a 14-day ATR of 0.15. The Average True Range is an investor tool used to measure stock volatility. The ATR is not used to figure out price direction, just to measure volatility. The ATR is an indicator developed by J. Welles Wilder. Wilder has developed multiple indicators that are still quite popular in todays investing landscape. The general interpretation of the ATR is the higher the ATR value, the higher the volatility.
The Williams Percent Range or Williams %R is another technical indicator worth checking out. Edap Tms SA (EDAP) currently has a 14 day Williams %R of -82.00. The Williams %R fluctuates between 0 and -100 measuring whether a security is overbought or oversold. The Williams %R is similar to the Stochastic Oscillator except it is plotted upside-down. Levels above -20 may indicate the stock may be considered is overbought. If the indicator travels under -80, this may signal that the stock is oversold. Chart analysts may also use the indicator to project possible price reversals and to define trends.
The Average Directional Index or ADX is technical analysis indicator used to discern if a market is trending or not trending. The ADX alone measures trend strength but not direction. Using the ADX with the Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) and Minus Directional Indicator (-DI) may help determine the direction of the trend as well as the overall momentum. Many traders will use the ADX alongside other indicators in order to help spot proper trading entry/exit points. Currently, the 14-day ADX for Edap Tms SA (EDAP) is 18.92. Generally speaking, an ADX value from 0-25 would indicate an absent or weak trend. A value of 25-50 would indicate a strong trend. A value of 50-75 would signal a very strong trend, and a value of 75-100 would indicate an extremely strong trend.
Traders may be leaning on technical stock analysis to help with investing decisions. Edap Tms SA (EDAP) currently has a 14-day Commodity Channel Index (CCI) of -110.93. Despite the name, CCI can be used on other investment tools such as stocks. The CCI was designed to typically stay within the reading of -100 to +100. Traders may use the indicator to determine stock trends or to identify overbought/oversold conditions. A CCI reading above +100 would imply that the stock is overbought and possibly ready for a correction. On the other hand, a reading of -100 would imply that the stock is oversold and possibly set for a rally.
Traders are paying renewed attention to shares of Edap Tms SA (EDAP). The current 14-day RSI is presently sitting at 39.28, the 7-day is 30.98, and the 3-day is 20.13. The RSI, or Relative Strength Index is a popular oscillating indicator among traders and investors. The RSI operates in a range-bound area with values between 0 and 100. When the RSI line moves up, the stock may be experiencing strength. The opposite is the case when the RSI line is heading lower. Different time periods may be used when using the RSI indicator. The RSI may be more volatile using a shorter period of time. Many traders keep an eye on the 30 and 70 marks on the RSI scale. A move above 70 is widely considered to show the stock as overbought, and a move below 30 would indicate that the stock may be oversold. Traders may use these levels to help identify stock price reversals.

Open-source Morpheo Platform to Use Artificial Intelligence to Help Diagnose Sleep Disorders – Sleep Review
Posted: at 4:18 am
Neurotechnology startup Rythm is building Morpheo, an open-source and secure initiative to help develop machine learning models for automatic and predictive diagnosis of sleep disorders.Morpheo will explore and provide sleep clinicians with a free online software that will automatically analyze sleep patterns and help improve and speed diagnosis related to sleep. Morpheo will also enable software developers and machine learning experts as they create models for the diagnosis of other illnesses. Rythm jointly announced Morpheo with cole Polytechnique and the Universit Paris Descartes with 5 million in funding from the French government and BPI, a French investment bank.
A collaborative project, Morpheo brings patients, medical doctors, sleep experts, academic researchers, data scientists, web developers, and cryptologists together to aggregate and organize sleep data on an unprecedented scale. Through sophisticated artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, Morpheo helps visualize complex sleep data for clinicians and allows development of machine learning models on large medical datasets. All of the above is achieved while guaranteeing the privacy and security for all data owners.
Artificial intelligence, ever-increasing computational power, and unprecedented amounts of data are transforming the healthcare industry, says Hugo Mercier, CEO and co-founder at Rythm, in a release. We are leveraging these advancements to understand one of the most important areas of health: sleep. We created Morpheo to provide a research tool that will pave the way for preventive and predictive medicine, enabling clinicians to treat pathologies earlier, faster and cheaper, and even to detect them before they happen.
Once built and launched, Morpheo will be powered by a certified, open-source blockchain infrastructure that guarantees the privacy of data. Users cannot access each others data, and only limited, agreed upon machine learning algorithms can access the data for training. Using AI, Morpheo will integrate various sources of information, ranging from traditional medical polysomnography to sleep wearables (like the Dreem headband). With these datasets, Morpheo will identify patterns that characterize sleep pathologies and other related illnesses that are attributed to sleep data.
As Morpheos infrastructure is data and algorithm agnosticin the longer termits approach could be generalized to other healthcare possibilities and beyond. What makes Morpheo unique is its versatility in handling sensitive data to solve critical challenges across various fields that apply and benefit fromartificial intelligence.

Canyon Sender CF 8.0 first ride review – BikeRadar.com
Posted: at 4:17 am
Canyon put forward a factory DH World Cup team for the first time this year, and this is the machine theyre competing on. With race season soon coming to an end, and the bike and squad performing well, we also wanted to swing a leg over one and find out how it handles for ourselves.
With sleek lines and a two-tone gloss colour/matt carbon finish, the Sender frame is nothing short of beautiful. Every detail has been carefully considered, from fork bump stops that are integrated with the internal cable routing, through to the flip chip system that adjusts the chainstay length, and rubber protection on the down tube and chainstays.
But this bike is more than just a pretty face the geometry is bang on the money too, as youd expect, considering its been designed with input from two-time world champ Fabien Barel.
The CF 8.0 is the mid-range complete bike and I tested the large size, which has a 460mm reach and a 616mm stack height. You can run the chainstays at either 430 or 446mm, and an angled headset gives you a degree to play with on either side of the stated 63-degree head angle.
A four-bar Horst Link suspension design provides 200mm of rear travel, controlled by a RockShox Vivid Air R2C shock. The leverage curve has been designed specifically around air shocks and Canyon says that the triple phase design gives good small-bump sensitivity, a supportive mid stroke and a bottomless feel deep in the travel.
The lightweight carbon frame is combined with a fairly high-end parts spec to create a full package with an impressively light weight and equally impressive price (for a race-ready downhill bike).
Out front, theres a RockShox BoXXer Team fork fitted with a medium coil spring. The Charger Damper performed well, but Id have welcomed the extra tuning capability of the air-sprung World Cup model.
The e*thirteen wheels are light and have a good amount of stiffness. Theyre shod with Maxxis Minion DHR II tyres, front and rear, which is a great choice for all-round conditions.
Performance of the SRAM Guide brakes and X01 DH drivetrain was as slick as always. The Renthal bar/stem combo gives a good feel to the cockpit.
Gone are the days of feeling unsettled when riding downhill on an air shock. Even on some of the most savage offerings at BikePark Wales, the Senders back end tracked well and my feet always felt planted on the (flat) pedals.
At the same time, though, it didnt feel like a plough bike. There was a welcome amount of feedback from the suspension that let me understand how the bike was working and helped with line choice. This lively feel, combined with the Senders light weight, meant that getting airborne took minimal effort.
Manoeuvring it around in the tech was easy too, even on flatter tracks where thoroughbred race bikes can feel sluggish. In the corners the bike performed well, but I reckon that a slightly bigger bottom bracket drop than 6mm would make it even better, giving it an unbeatably planted feel.
On my test bike, I recorded the head angle as 63.5 degrees, which is perfect for UK riding, but on the steeper, higher-speed tracks of the Alps youll be glad of the extra slackness offered by the adjustable headset cups.
These minor niggles arent enough to detract from whats a seriously impressive bike though. It looks good, rides well and offers some great kit for the money. What more do you want?
Light and nimble but with confidence-inspiring capability, this is how a downhill bike should feel.
