Crews make progress on Mammoth Fire – Idaho Mountain Express and Guide

Posted: August 8, 2017 at 4:02 am

The regional office of the Bureau of Land Management reported this morning that firefighting crews have made significant progress on stopping the advance of the Mammoth Fire, which started Friday north of Shoshone and marched northward over the weekend through sagebrush and grasslands to the south of Blaine County.

The BLM reported Monday morning that it expects to have the fire contained by 8 p.m. tonight, Aug. 7, and controlled by Thursday night. The fire has burned about 50,200 acres of land.

The BLM reported that a "burnout" operation on Sunday was successful in eliminating fuels in the fire's path and that most of the fire's progression had been stopped.

"Crews are improving containment lines and mopping up hotspots," the BLM reported. "Some interior burning is expected today, but should not cause any additional growth."

The BLM has 24 engines, two hand crews, one hot-shot crew, 20 aircraft, four bulldozers, three water tenders and one camp crew fighting the fire.

The wildfire started about seven miles north of Shoshone, near the Mammoth Ice Caves, on Friday, of an undetermined cause. Over the weekend, it burned north to within about seven miles of Carey. On Sunday, crews were able to stop the fire at the Picabo Desert Road, south of Timmerman Hill.

The fire has burned one residence and two minor structures, the BLM reported.

On Saturday night and Sunday morning, the fire threatened to destroy a primary electrical transmission line into the Wood River Valley. County officials and residents were put on alert Saturday that loss of the line could cause a sustained power outage in the valley. Idaho Power Co. and BLM crews were able to prevent severe damage to the line and power to Blaine County was never lost.

Seahawks Offensive Line Coach Tom Cable Likes Progress He’s … – Seahawks.com

Posted: at 4:02 am

The Seahawks offensive line has been and will continue to be one of the most discussed position groups on the roster heading into the 2017 season. At times a young and relatively inexperienced line played well, but there were struggles and inconsistencies as well, something the Seahawks want to avoid this year.

With three second-year players battling for starting jobsGeorge Fant, Germain Ifedi and Rees Odhiambowith two veteran free agents, Luke Joeckel and Oday Aboushi added to the mix; and with two rookies, Ethan Pocic and Jordan Roos competing for playing time, offensive line coach/assistant head coach Tom Cable sees the potential for a lot of growth.

I think to start with is that our retention is good from the spring and theyre working very hard, Cable said. Were better because were a little older, got some nice guys in addition in terms of Joeckel and Aboushi, and Pocic and Roos. I think all four guys can help us somewhere.

In particular, the trio of Fant, Odhiambo and Ifedi should be able to make a big leap with a year of NFL experience under their belt, and thats especially true for Fant, who was a college basketball player who barely played in his one season of football at Western Kentucky.

Coach (Pete Carroll) and I talked about it; its like when freshmen become sophomores, a big jump that second year, and were seeing some of that, Cable said. When you talk about things now, (Fant) understands what it is.Hes not just fresh off the basketball court, I dont know what you are saying, you know? So we are in another level in terms of our conversations, discussions, the things that he is working on now are things we never got to last year. So that is going to be a big part of him getting himself ready physically, but also his maturation.

While Fant, Odhiambo and Jockel are battling for two starting spots on the right side, Mark Glowinski, last years starter at left guard, is competing at right guard with Aboushi. Thats a move back to his natural position for Glowinski, who played on the right side in college and as a backup during his rookie season.

That is his background and we have kind of talked about this before, Cable said. He seems much more comfortable and much more sure of himself.

And while Britt, who was a Pro Bowl alternate in his first season at center, is a veteran who is as close to being a lock to start as anyone on the line, he too should benefit from having a year under his belt. A right tackle as a rookie and left guard in 2015, Britt is preparing this year to stay at the same position in consecutive years for the first time in his professional career.

Like the rest of the group, his improvement is very noticeable, Cable said. His command of it and his leadership has really showed up, but playing the position with the fundamentals, hes a whole year better after going at it for a year. He understands what youre talking about right from the get-go, and hes able to really make a difference in there.

And thanks to the signings of Jockel and Aboushi, Britt wont be the only veteran available to help the rest of the young linemen develop.

Here are a couple of guys that played five years and both of them have been starters in the NFL and they have both been in transition from one team to another, Cable said. What I am really pleased with them about is how much they are doing for the young guys and how willing they are to help guys grow. So its a cool group, really cool group.

Education Dept.’s Progress Is Stalled in Complying With Consumer … – The Chronicle of Higher Education (blog)

Posted: at 4:01 am

August 7, 2017 by Adam Harris

The Education Department has not made any progress toward generating data this year to comply with the Obama-era gainful-employment rule and does not have any timetable for doing so, according to a letterlast week from Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. The hotly contested regulation, a holdover from President Barack Obamas administration, is meant to hold career-preparation programs accountable when their graduates education debts consistently exceed their ability to repay them.

The letter came in response to questions submitted by Sen. Richard J. Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, as part of a Senate committees consideration of the Trump administrations 2018 budget request. Senator Durbin asked the secretary about the draft completer list the first step in generating gainful-employment data. Last year the Education Department under President Obama sent that list to institutions for review by June. Ms. DeVos wrote to Senator Durbin that the department had not yet provided the list to institutions this year.

The department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Chronicle.

In June the department announced that it would begin the process of rolling back the regulation. The negotiated rule-making process to rework the rulegot underway last month. The department is required to comply with the regulation, as written, during that renegotiation.

It is time for us in Congress to speak up, saidSenator Durbin in a speech last week on the Senate floor. It is time for Secretary DeVos and the Trump administration to stop aiding and abetting for-profit colleges.

Secular doctors are realizing that demonic possession is real, and needs special attention – Catholic Online

Posted: at 3:59 am

Yes, demons are real, and they can harm you.

Last week, CNN featured Dr. Richard Gallagher in a story about demonic possession. Gallagher is one of a growing number of secular mental health professionals that are convinced that demonic possession is real, and should be treated as a unique condition.

Demonic possession is real, and the number of cases are growing.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- Mental illness and demonic possession are two different afflictions. They require different treatments, and this has been understood for centuries. As far back as the 17th century, the Catholic Church has made clear that people with treatable medical conditions need doctors, rather than priests. However, there are cases which exceed all medical and scientific understanding, and in such cases, a priest may be required.

Demonic possession is real and has been increasing in the modern age. The rising tide of secularism, fascination with magic and witchcraft, and the public acceptance of things such as atheism and Satanism have rendered people much more vulnerable to demonic possession. Professional exorcists have noted the trend as their workload increases.

This has been the experience of Dr. Gallagher, a secular, Ivy-League trained psychiatrist. Dr. Gallagher is also a professor, teaching at Columbia University and New York Medical College. According to conventional wisdom, a man with his credentials ought not seek the spotlight, acknowledging the existence of the supernatural. It could hurt one's reputation. However, as demonic possessions grow in number, they are also gaining acceptance as psychiatrists recognize them as a real phenomenon.

Are they a form of mental illness not yet understood? Are they elaborate hoaxes? Or could they be genuine cases, situations where demons possess the bodies of vulnerable people?

Whatever the case, there is talk about adding demonic possession to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This hasn't happened yet, and it would be debatable. Do spiritual issues belong in a manual of mental disorders? Is demonic possession a problem of the brain, or of the spirit?

The view that the human person is simply a bundle of cells is incomplete. Humans possess a spiritual sense and there is a spiritual realm. As more doctors recognize this, they are pushing for patients to receive both spiritual and medical care as part of the healing process.

Dr. Gallagher has personal experience with demonic possession, which you can learn about here by reading the article on CNN. It is encouraging to see that more doctors are recognizing the role that God and the supernatural plays in the human experience.

‘A Parallelogram’ Theater Review: Bruce Norris Gives Nihilism a Good Name – The Edwardsville Intelligencer

This gentle comedy is like the Midas Touch, teaching us how our fondest dream can turn into a living nightmare

Robert Hofler, provided by

A Parallelogram Theater Review: Bruce Norris Gives Nihilism a Good Name

I saw the Los Angeles premiere of Bruce Norriss A Parallelogram four years ago, and remember almost nothing about it. Having just seen the first New York production of this gently nihilistic comedy, which opened Wednesday at Second Stage, I think Ill never forget it.

Like Norris wonderfully mad heroine Bee (Celia Keenan-Bolger), perhaps Im living in a parallelogram, having experienced the same play in different planes of time and space. (Its doubtful this is the way Norris would describe a parallelogram. You need to see the play to get a much more cogent definition.) The major difference between Bee and most of us is that shes cursed with an older version of herself (Anita Gillette) who keeps telling her what will happen in the next 60 seconds, if not the next few decades of her life. In this sense, A Parallelogram is a lot like the Midas Touch and other ancient fables that teach us how our fondest dream can turn into a living nightmare.

Unlike most plays about madness, A Parallelogram takes us inside the lead characters feverish mind to reveal the logic of hallucination and how lucid it can make a person. Bees knowledge of the future does not give her the ability to change her life, she learns, except in the most insignificant ways. Extrapolating that nihilism outward, she finds that shes grossed out by childbirth and young children, and, truth be told, is not really affected by mass deaths on the other side of the world or, for that matter, the Holocaust and 9/11. Its with her mention of these latter catastrophic events that Norris shows his true bravery as a playwright. Its the older Bees casual rant here that separates the curmudgeons in the audience from the true misanthropists. And the younger Bees total disgust at a nearly born baby (a living turd) is equally breathtaking in its negativity.

Keenan-Bolgers gift as an actress is to keep her faade abnormally placid while revealing whats just below the surface, as well as whats wrenching her gut. Michael Greifs direction pairs her beautifully with Gillette, who personifies not a disgraceful version of Bees older self but someone who is definitely a deep disappointment to the younger Bee. Equally effective is Keenan-Bolgers pairing with Stephen Kunken, who plays Bees first boyfriend. Kunken is asked to repeat his characters actions, often three or four times a la Groundhog Day. He does this was astounding precision, but also gives the impression that hes as unaware of whats going on as Bee is hyper sensitive to everything around her past, present, and future.

For Bee, life turns out to be so much less than what she wants it to be, and Norris leaves her trapped by that knowledge. But he gives her moments. Bees subsequent boyfriend is played by Juan Castano, and his brief half-naked saunter across the stage after showering lets us know that their sex together is great. They wont remain together for long, but while hes there, shes getting laid in a spectacular way. A Parallelogram is like that. In the end, its message is a downer, but the play is thrilling to watch while its there in front of us.

From ravers sucking spaghetti off one another, to live alpacas strutting around the clubthere's hardly a part of Berlin nightlife that Jess Pastor hasn't caught on camera. Over the past seven years, the photographer has roamed Berlin's most hedonistic parties to document its "animals of the night," as he likes to call them. "In Berlin, people are really awake at night," he tells me.

Pastor started in 2010, by capturing the hazy after parties of the Berlin International Film Festival. Soon, his reputation got him and his camera access to the kind of events that traditionally ban photographylike parties in the King Size Bar (famously tiny and hard to get in) or the House of Red Doors at the Wilde Renate nightclub, which its organizers describe using the key words "sex, hedonism, escapism, and exuberance."

Jess Pastor's latest series, Wild Wolves, brings together his best photos showcasing the hedonistic glory of Berlin after dark. He tells me that what he likes about Berlin nights is that people there have almost no taboos. "You can smell the freedom from every corner," he says.

Eric Rubin Brings The Troubadour’s Mustache to Redwood City in August – Broadway World

Posted: at 3:58 am

Beginning in the summer of 2017 Dragon Theatre will be open late on select Friday nights to showcase some up and coming local talents and help make downtown Redwood City the peninsula's premiere destination for entertainment.

Admission for these shows is $17 in advance or $20 at the door and each ticket includes one beverage to enjoy during the show.

All shows are aged 21+. Doors open at 10-ish (if there's a show beforehand it might be closer to 10:15p) and shows start at 10:30p.

This series is sponsored in part by the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission.

We kicked off the series in July with "Michael Riley and Friends: A Night of Serious Comedy." We're following up this successful kick off with Michael's opener, Eric Rubin. Eric is bringing his new show, The Troubadour's Mustache: A One-Man Musical Comedy to downtown Redwood City in August. The show was written by Eric Rubin and was directed by Dan Griffiths.

Cue the music. A pouty Spanish troubadour needs, no DEMANDS, all of your attention. What follows is a fusion of looped sounds, beatbox, hip hop/freestyle, storytelling, improv, metal guitar riffs and Eric's awkward bird-like dancing.

In 2014, Eric waved bye-bye to the bureaucratic monotony of Washington, DC and embarked on a journey that would become the GREATEST journey ever journeyed upon. He created deep pools of sweat in a Burmese monastery. He chased that experience with a heaping glass of hedonism at the Thai paradise "The Sanctuary," where liver cleanses and acid tabs are consumed interchangeably. He fell for a Danish ice queen, an Austrian shamaness, and an especially cold bowl of coconut ice cream.

What happens when you unwind your personal narrative at 35? The voice of doubt, confusion, regret, and siren songs of lives we might have lived grow strong. Eric will strive to reassemble the puzzle pieces and slay the voices beneath the stage lights. Odd, yes. Strange, sure. Groundless, Maybe. Somehow universal? ...I'll get back to you...

"I don't understand WHAT this is? What's wrong with him? Is he 'all there?'" -Concerned audience member.

ABOUT ERIC RUBIN: As seen on SF Sketchfest, Tourettes without Regrettes, Sac Comedy Fest, Speechless Live, Pianofight, and more, Eric Rubin produces original works blending clown, musical comedy and storytelling. He has toured his work to three continents and has also used theater as a tool for youth empowerment and social change in schools, prisons, and with Colombian refugees in Latin America. Eden-ism in Les Bains – Prestige Online

Posted: at 3:58 am

We stay in the legendary Hotel Les Bains to get a glimpse of where the worlds glitterati go to bathe in excess, and what the establishment has to offer those seeking respite today.

They have condoms in the mini bar.

My travel partner declares this as I enter our room at Les Bains on my return from a lunch engagement in nearby Saint-Denis. Though amusing, its not surprising, given the hotels past as a watering hole for the best and brightest of many an era. The building began life 132 years ago as a restaurant and bathhouse for the bohmes of the belle poque, frequented by the likes of Marcel Proust. It later reincarnated to become the hotbed of 1970s Parisian hedonism: Les Bains Douche, a nightclub with as the name suggests its own pool, that was ornamented by regulars such as Yves Saint Laurent, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Bowie and Grace Jones. Although Les Bains Douche closed its shutters for the last time in 2010, filmmaker Jean-Pierre Marois, whose family has owned the property at 7 Rue du Bourg LAbb since the 1960s, enlisted architect Vincent Bastie and architects and interior designers Tristan Auer and Denis Montel to create the latest reimagining of the fabled Parisian landmark.

Couched in historic Le Marais in Pariss third arrondissement, Les Bains is an imposing Haussmann-era building designed by Eugne Ewald in 1885, and has retained elements of its legacy as the pleasure dome of multiple eras. Bacchus the Greek god of wine and intoxication still rears his head above the entrance archway, and is embossed on everything from the bed linen to the slippers, the towels, and, yes, the condom wrappers. There are plenty more not-so-subtle reminders that pleasure is to be had throughout the property, and staff do an admirable job of leaving you to enjoy all of it by yourself. The corridor leading to the 39 guestrooms is clad with a replica of the black-and-gold carpet immortalised in a photograph of the great singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg scribbling lyrics in his bathtub. The black doors and corridor walls offer a stark contrast to the bright and airy rooms they lead to, a third of which contain hammams.

References to the hotels rich history do not end here. The rooms have an unapologetically retro vibe. Grey carpeting is juxtaposed against rust-coloured banquette sofas, an homage to Warhols Factory in New York. Guests can warm up for a party using the Marshall speaker that is available in every room. The mini fridge is covered in a black and white check motif, an aesthetically pleasing touch that references the bathhouse tiles of the Philippe Starck-designed Les Bains Douche; and in proffering a complete liquor range its also pivotal in helping to unleash your inner Mick Jagger because, of course, all you need before and after a night of revelry in Les Bains basement club is a bed with superior linen, some booze, good tunes ... and protection.

Should you be more high-brow than high-throttle, you can spend time reading on your rooms Haussmann balcony; we cannot forget that Frances finest thinkers once frequented this establishment, so it stands to reason that books are available in each room for the intelligentsia of our time. Or simply lounge around in the hammam bathtubs if the personal steam rooms are not to your liking luxuriating in the heated bathroom floors and a generous selection of Le Labo amenities. While away the rest of the day in the hotel swimming pool and resurface for a drink at the bar. It is, ultimately, a hotel you do not wish to leave.

For those who have the great fortune of living in the City of Light, or perhaps the lesser fortune of staying elsewhere, there remain a host of delights. On entering the hotel, restaurant La Salle--Manger creates a dramatic first impression. Crimson lacquer coats the ceiling and the sheen is such that the Lalique bar and tables and the black-and-white floor tiles are all flawlessly reflected (breakfast is served in the restaurant until 3pm and dinner until midnight). There are two courtyards that can accommodate those who wish to dine outdoors or bask in the sun with a drink. Alternatively, those wishing to imbibe in a more intimate space can sequester themselves in the Honesty Bar, a chinois-inspired room with stained glass windows and leather chairs.

It would be remiss not to visit La Boutique Les Bains, which, like the rest of the hotel, is a dream to look at, an experimental gift shop that knows its cooler than you. The stripped-down, wood-beamed space offers exclusive Les Bains collaborations that include coffee beans from Parisian micro roaster Belleville Brlerie, swimwear, and La Planche Roulettes skateboards.

However, the main attraction will always be the club, with its legends of the hedonism of yore. Marois was astute enough to include a club in the new space, preserving some elements of the original, such as the voluminous Phillippe Starck-designed white and light blue speckled mosaic bathtub. Taking the stairs down to the basement, one enters the storied cave that once saw Carla Bruni partying before her Dior-donning days as First Lady, when everyone from Basquiat and Warhol to Linda Evangelista and Jack Nicholson cavorted in the steamy pulsing darkness.

The club only opens its doors to the citys glitterati on weekends, but if youre there, why not take a room to conclude your night of intemperance with appropriate sybaritic indulgence?
