WW3: The UN Security Council Gut Punched NKorea

United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said Saturday that tough UN sanctions approved by the Security Council against North Korea delivered a gut punch and that future military action was up to Pyongyang over its recent missile tests.

US President Donald Trump took to Twitter Saturday to praise the UN Security Council for slapping tough sanctions on North Korea, noting that China and Russia voted with us.

The Security Councilvoted to target North Korean exportsthat sought to deprive Pyongyang of $1-B in annual revenue and other strong steps in response to its recent missile tests.

The resolution was drafted by the US and the 15-0 vote included support from China, Russia, Japan and South Korea.

The measure bans all exports of coal, iron and iron ore, lead and lead ore, as well as fish and seafood by the cash-starved state, thus stripping North Korea of a third of its export earnings estimated at $3-B a year.

We should not fool ourselves into thinking we have solved the problem, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina Republican governor, told the council before the vote. Not even close.

The North Korean threat has not left us. It is rapidly growing more dangerous.

Further action is required, she added. The United States is taking and will continue to take prudent defensive measures to protect ourselves and our allies.

Amb. Haley noted that Washington would continue annual joint military exercises with South Korea.

Changes for TMS with new school year – Tallmadge Express

Manion to serve as principal By APRIL HELMS Reporter Published: August 6, 2017 12:00 AM

When students at Tallmadge Middle School begin their new school year Aug. 16, they will have a new principal as well as new bell and bus schedules -- although the new school leader is someone they probably already know.

On July 19, the Tallmadge School Board approved a two-year contract with former assistant principal Jeff Manion, who became principal effective Aug. 1. His salary is $93,326 per year.

Board President Rick Kellar said that the board "unanimously supported" hiring Manion as the new middle school principal.

"We have great confidence he will do a great job as the new leader at the middle school," Kellar said.

The former principal, Rob Kearns, left to take a position with the Youngstown schools, Manion said.

Superintendent Jeff Ferguson said he was happy that Kearns was about to take advantage of an opportunity "closer to home."

"We would like to thank Rob for his service," Ferguson said.

Manion said that he and his wife, who teaches at North Canton schools, moved to Brimfield two years ago from Uniontown and have three school-aged children, two sons and a daughter. They attend the Tallmadge schools, he said.

All of his 15-year teaching career has been with Tallmadge Schools, Manion said, starting out as a substitute teacher. The door opened up for him when he was called to teach French and Spanish for two weeks after the regular teacher contracted mononucleosis.

"By the way, I have no idea how to teach either one," Manion said, and he laughed. "But someone must have been impressed because when a position became available, they asked me."

Manion said that he taught at all of the buildings at one point or another as a physical education teacher. Five years ago, he was moved to the middle school, 4 1/2 of those years as the assistant principal. Previously, he spent 10 years at Munroe Elementary, "teaching a variety of grades."

Manion said he looked forward to working with the staff and students in his new position in the upcoming year.

"I think my staff would tell you that here at the middle school, you have to be flexible," Manion said. "You are dealing with middle school students and you have to be flexible with this age group."

However, Manion said the school has "a fantastic staff," which takes a student-centered approach.

"They make my job a lot easier," Manion said.

Ferguson said he was pleased to see Manion take the principal's seat.

"He started as a teacher and has worked in many positions," Ferguson said. "I think it will be a smooth transition."

New schedules for buses and bells

The daily bell and bus schedule for Tallmadge Middle School has changed with the 2017-18 school year. The schedule will begin 10 minutes earlier than last year's schedule. Additionally, the high school and middle school bus routes will be separated so that each building will have its own route.

With the new schedule, buses will drop off middle school students starting at 7:05 a.m. All students must be on campus by 7:25 a.m. to avoid being tardy. At the end of the school day, buses will leave by 2:30 p.m. and all students must be off campus by 2:35 p.m., unless they are involved in an after-school activity.

"The decision to adjust the schedule and separate the bus routes was made to alleviate traffic, increase student safety and save time across the district," Ferguson said. "We are happy to report that the new schedule does not require any additional buses and will even save time on some bus routes."

Historically, the district ran high school and middle school bus routes together. In the morning, buses would drop students off at the high school, then drop the remaining students off at the middle school. After school, buses would pick up high school students first, then travel to the middle school. Some high school students would then transfer to a different bus to get home. The middle school also experienced increased congestion due to buses, parents picking up students and high school athletes gathering for practices during the after-school timeframe.

"We are confident that separating the bus routes will help reduce congestion before and after school, as well as improve safety for our students, their families and our staff members," Ferguson said. "Additionally, we will be breaking ground for new building construction this fall, reducing the amount of space at the middle school. This new schedule will be beneficial during this process as well."

When an anti-Muslim activist group organized March Against Sharia rallies in cities across the country in June, it wasnt the first time Americans gathered to fight a suspicious religion from overseas. One August evening in 1834, a small mob gathered with torches and weapons on a dark hillside in what is now Somerville, intent on battling a grave threat: Roman Catholicism. Squinting up at the Mount Benedict Convent of the Ursuline nuns, the crowd swapped stories of outrages committed behind its walls: nuns sexually exploited, novices forced to wear painful corsets, starved, tortured.

These patriots could not understand why their Protestant leaders not only tolerated such evils, but even sent their own daughters up to the convent. The nativists understood they needed to take matters into their hands. So they did. They tore apart the convent, tossing pianos from its upper windows, smashing sculptures, damaging paintings, and scouring the compound for elusive victims. Finding none, they reduced the convent to a smoldering heap, cheered for a while, and went home.

Mount Benedict Convent is long gone. Americas religious tensions are not as officials in Texas showed this summer, when the state became the eighth to legislate against the infiltration and incursion of foreign laws and foreign legal doctrines, especially Islamic Sharia law. To Muslims, Sharia is form of canonical law meant to govern how believers interact with one another and how their society runs; while there are moderate interpretations of Sharia, American media coverage generally deploys the term in connection with the fundamentalist vision of groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda.

As a historian of 19th-century Boston, I see parallels between the anti-Sharia activists and the antebellum nativists who claimed that Irish immigrants were loyal to the pope, not the United States; who saw Catholic parochial schools as evidence of an unwillingness to assimilate; and who insisted that the Vatican was preparing to invade America via a tunnel it was digging beneath the Atlantic seabed.

Just as the rumors of abuse at Mount Benedict proved baseless, theres little evidence that American Muslims desire, let alone seek, the implementation of Sharia law. Critics have thus dismissed the anti-Sharia movement as nothing more than a thinly veiled prejudice, part of our habitual suspicion that certain ideologies, religions, and ethnicities are plotting the countrys downfall.

Global trends toward interconnection, economic growth, social progress, and stronger civil society have not completely bypassed the Islamic world.

Yet our history of conspiracy theorizing and racial paranoia doesnt fully explain the timing of all this anxiety about Sharia. Why has Sharia law has become a mainstream preoccupation now, rather than, say, after 9/11? A history of religious bigotry doesnt explain why the most feared weapon of Islamist radicals has shifted from bombings and hijackings to a theological doctrine.

While the anti-Sharia movements growing profile might suggest otherwise, only a slightly larger percentage of Americans suspect US Muslims of anti-Americanism today than in 2002.

The question is: What has prompted the outcry against Sharia now, nearly a generation after the attack on the World Trade Center, when public suspicions of Islam have increased but little? The case of Mount Benedict suggests that conspiracy beliefs about social minorities often propagate when social majorities themselves become divided. Catholicism became a flashpoint then, just as Islamic law is today, because rapidly evolving standards of politeness were leaving many Americans behind.

As it turns out, shifts within a community for instance, in the way middle-class, native-born citizens treat one another have profound effects on how members of that community view those on the outside.

The link between etiquette and Islamophobia comes into view in a 2016 Pew Research Center survey, conducted just as conservatives were excoriating the Obama administration for denouncing violent extremism instead of the more pointed radical Islamic terrorism. In that Pew survey, Republicans outnumbered Democrats by 17 percent in believing that religious teachings, not violent people, bear the greater blame for religious violence. However significant, this partisan gap wasnt nearly as large as that elicited by another survey question: How should the incoming president speak about terrorism carried out in the name of Islam? By a margin more than twice larger, Democrats preferred caution; Republicans, bluntness.

Taken together, the two statistics suggest that Americans dont disagree nearly as much about violence and religion as they do about manners. So what do manners have to do with nativist suspicions? Quite a lot, if we reflect on the Mount Benedict episode.

Then and now, constitutional freedoms were thought to be at risk, and fears of an insurgent foreign faith sometimes combined with reigning norms of chivalry. Nineteenth-century nativists used their version of social media, cheaply printed tracts, to swap lurid tales of oppressed young women confined in both dress and spirit by a sexually repressive faith.

Todays anti-Sharia activists attribute the appeal of a dangerous and unsavory faith to poor education and brainwashing. The 19th-century nativists similarly believed that Catholics needed to be taught to read, and think, and act for themselves, or so proclaimed the anti-Catholic Rev. Lyman Beecher before a crowd on Boston Common, shortly before the Mount Benedict incident.

A conspicuous part of the mob, and that most responsible for allowing Mount Benedict to burn, consisted of Bostons volunteer firemen. Unlike todays professional fire departments, antebellum volunteer fire companies were highly fluid and drew members from many walks of life, from successful merchants to humble laborers. What the volunteer firemen did share was a rowdy sense of culture: They felt at home in an older, rougher masculine culture that revolved around drinking, fighting, and displaying physical prowess.

By the 1830s, that culture was on a collision course with a more feminized bourgeois urban society that increasingly eschewed displays of violence, embraced temperance, and, starting that decade, consumed etiquette manuals by the dozens. As the historian Karen Halttunen has shown, the genteel conventions explained in those manuals struck many Protestants as troublingly akin to Catholic ritual. Protestants understood their own religion as one of sincerity and spontaneous feeling. Catholicism and bourgeois manners appeared the opposite: practices of formulaic incantations that impressed the simple-minded but lacked real meaning.

This helps explain why the mob that pulled apart the convent didnt just commit violence, but rudely impersonated priests and inquisitors before it tore the convent apart. Their choice of target was no accident in this regard. The fancy Ursuline Convent was where the richest Protestant Bostonians sent their daughters to learn the very refined social manners that the firefighters disdained.

Anti-Catholic and anti-Irish sentiment bear the greatest blame for the attack, but not all of it. What the Protestant nativists found so alien in the Ursuline Convent wasnt just the Catholic faith, but the affected mannerisms of so many Americans who suddenly thought themselves members of the middle class. While much of the grievance against the nuns of Convent Hill stemmed from prejudices as old as the Reformation, another crucial trigger was an identity crisis within Protestant society.

Todays anti-Sharia movement emerges during a similar crisis of manners. In 2017, the issue is not so much dining or handshaking etiquette, but political correctness. A senior editor at The Atlantic recently offered this unflattering comparison: Political correctness requires more than ordinary courtesy: Its a ritual, like knowing which fork to use, by which superior people recognize each other. Other critics of PC culture go further, comparing its rigidity and abstruseness to a form of religious dogma Sharia law for snowflakes, as one Fox News personality memorably put it.

For its champions, political correctness isnt intended to oppress or exclude, but to encourage acceptance and inclusion. Champions of PC culture thus find its critics not only unjustified, but disingenuous and hypocritical. In their view, conservatives (along with occasional liberals such as Bill Maher) who carp about trigger warnings and tone-policing are ultimately concerned with maintaining a safe space in which to air their own retrograde views.

Yet this dismissal may be too cynical. When cultures adopt new scripts, insecurities bubble up, sometimes within social categories but often across them.

Along with a majority of whites, nearly a third of African-Americans believe that Americans are too quick to take offense at remarks made by those of other backgrounds. In Racial Paranoia: The Unintended Consequences of Political Correctness, the anthropologist John L. Jackson found African-Americans unsettled by political correctness, not because it overturns racial attitudes, but because it requires their concealment. When racism was explicit, obvious, and legal, there was little need to be paranoid about it, Jackson explains.

The backlash against political correctness has a social dimension. While popular culture would have us assume that a sense of exclusion fuels conspiracy theories, recent psychological research suggests that such theories are less likely to thrive among solitary, isolated individuals.

Instead, conspiracy beliefs are more likely to propagate when people who feel uncertain about themselves receive messages of inclusion from others with similar concerns. Our polarized society has provided both conditions of late. The specter of PC manners has engendered uncertainty among many Americans, who in turn find inclusion among the like-minded at Trump rallies and other spectacles of anti-Sharia sentiment.

We need to consider that this combination of defensiveness and acceptance may encourage conspiracy beliefs about minority groups such as Muslims, even when the original social suspicions arent especially focused on those minorities. Put simply, the targets of our insecurities arent necessarily their true source.

As one 2015 study on the subject concludes, Conspiracy beliefs actually emerge from social motives namely, a genuine concern for other people that are victimized, endangered, deceived, or otherwise threatened.

The importance of self-uncertainty may be key to understanding the spread of nativist conspiracy theories of the antebellum period and today, and not just in the way suggested by reams of articles analyzing support for President Trump. The Trump phenomenon, most analyses suggest, stems from broad class and racial insecurities: fear of what a black president means for whiteness, or of how Latino immigration threatens white communities. Group status anxiety, according to this view, drives the paranoid style.

In fact, the collective insecurity we experience in our encounters with other races may provoke less paranoia than the intimate experiences of our still largely intraracial lives. Whatever comfort racially insecure whites find within the homogeneity of their communities and churches is bound to be lost when their own once-trustworthy white acquaintances start questioning their jokes.

The antebellum experience again suggests a parallel. At the peak of anti-Catholicism, anti-Masonry, and anti-Mormonism, social and economic opportunities were not shrinking but expanding for white Protestant men. Slavery remained relatively unchallenged, and Indian removal made land cheap and readily available. In Boston, immigration did little at first to increase competition for skilled labor; the immigrant Irish took pick-and-shovel jobs or worked as domestics. The relative status of non-elite whites had rarely been better.

Yet even under these rosy conditions, a significant number of white Protestants believed the pope was digging that tunnel under the Atlantic. Others believed that Masons were overthrowing the government. Still others swore that Mormons were kidnapping helpless young white women.

In August 1834, one group of these men, set apart from the mainstream of Boston society not by race, class, or religion, but by their increasingly unacceptable manners, acted out a paranoid fantasy.

None of this should encourage us to deny the reality of Islamophobia or its ultimate foundation in our religious, racial, and foreign policy history. But the recent alarm over Sharia may be more than just a knee-jerk response to unfamiliar forces. It as likely originates in the misinterpreted experience of many Americans: having their speech and behavior judged by to a new and apparently alien code.

Dealing with Islamophobia requires more than just refining our manners. It means the difficult and presently unpopular work of empathizing with those who seem to neither desire nor deserve the effort.

A Catholic research institute has described the gene editing of human embryos at a US university as the essence of eugenics, adding that the study raises serious ethical concerns.

Scientists at Oregon Health and Science University used a gene editing tool called Crispr-Cas9 to remove a genetic mutation that causes sudden heart failure, the first reported success in gene editing outside of China.

Dr David Albert Jones, director at the Anscombe Bioethics Centre in Oxford, England, said: The whole rationale for this experiment is to take a step towards genetic modification as an assisted reproductive technology.

Dr Jones released the statement after Nature, an international science journal, reported the researchers findings on 2 August, pointing to ethical concerns in the process and aims of gene editing research.

Women are being encouraged by financial inducements to part with their reproductive potential, Dr Jones said, highlighted the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome for participants in the project.

Dr Jones also addressed the overall ambitions for advocates of gene editing.

The embryo is conceived with the intention that it will be modified. Hence, whichever method is used the aim is the same: to produce a modified embryo.

This aim is the essence of eugenics: not to make people better but to make better people.

Dr Jones added: Historic examples, not only in Germany but in Sweden and in the United States show vividly how easily programmes for the eradication of defects in the human stock can undermine principles of equality, solidarity and respect for people with heritable conditions.

Eugenics involves not only scientific experimentation but social experimentation and we have seen the results of such experiments. They do not end well.

The United States does not allow government funding for research involving human embryos, but the work is not illegal if it is funded by private donors.

In February, a report on gene editing by the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) called the procedure highly contentious.

The technology would therefore cross a line many have viewed as ethically inviolable, the NAS report stated.

Eugenics is alive and well in Tennessee.

This spring, Judge Sam Benningfield approved a program in which prisoners at the White County Jail in Sparta were offered reproductive sterilization in exchange for reduced sentences. As of May 15, more than two dozen women had reportedly agreed to birth-control implants and 38 men to vasectomies.

Sterilizations to lessen criminal sentences are not a new phenomenon in Tennessee. Between 2010 and 2015, they were offered as part of plea deals in four criminal cases.

To put these sterilizations in perspective, we need to go back to the beginning.

In 1866, an Augustine monk named Gregor Mendel found that when he crossed pea plants, certain physical traits like plant size and leaf color dominated. Mendel proposed that pea plants were inheriting one factor from each parent. Today we call these factors genes.

A few years after Mendel published his findings, a British scientist named Francis Galtonwho was a half-cousin of Charles Darwinmade the leap from peas to people and from physical traits to something broader. If we could breed better animals, reasoned Galton, couldnt we breed better humans, too? Wouldnt traits like intelligence, loyalty, bravery, and honesty also be inherited? And wouldnt selecting for these traits make for a better world? One free from drunkenness, violence, and poverty. A world, he proposed, where the lower classes could be bred out of existence, no longer a burden to society. He called his plan eugenics, from the Greek for well born.

In the early 1900s, this ideology crossed the ocean and landed in a small cove near Huntington, New York. The two men who championed Galtons cause were Charles Davenport and Harry Laughlin. As [society] claims the right to deprive the murderer of his life, said Davenport, so also it may annihilate the hideous serpent of hopelessly vicious protoplasm.

Davenport and Laughlins list of vicious protoplasm included the feeble-minded, the poor, alcoholics, criminals, epileptics, the insane, the constitutionally weak, those suffering from venereal diseases, the deformed, and those deaf, blind, or mute.

In October 1910, their Eugenics Records Office opened for business. Its mission was clear: Determine which Americans were of inferior stock and prevent them from marrying or having children. The first step was to confine them to unisex institutions for the insane or mentally disabled. The next was to sterilize those who were still roaming free.

The eugenicists had completely bastardized Mendels laws. While physical characteristics such as eye color can be mapped to specific genes, traits like criminality, alcoholism, or susceptibility to venereal diseases cant. Not everything can be accounted for by strict Mendelian genetics.

Nonetheless, the false notion that selective breeding could make for a better society allowed Americans to cloak some of their worst prejudices in the gilded robes of science.

The zealous efforts of Davenport and Laughlin shaped a nation.

By 1928, about 400 colleges and universities in the U.S. offered courses in eugenics, and 70 percent of high-school biology textbooks embraced the pseudoscience. The eugenics movement also changed the law: Four states prohibited the marriage of alcoholics, 17 banned the marriage of epileptics, and 41 forbade the marriage of the feeble-minded and the insane. By the mid-1930s, America was the world leader in banned marriages. (Marriage-restriction laws werent declared unconstitutional until 1967.)

American citizens were now ready to take the next stepto legislate forced sterilization. When the dust settled, 65,370 poor, syphilitic, feeble-minded, insane, alcoholic, deformed, lawbreaking, or epileptic Americans in 32 states had been sterilized. California alone had more than 20,000. Few rose in protest. It was one of the darkest moments in American history.

Most of those sterilized didnt understand what was being done, and were surprised that they could no longer have children. Some were told they were having a different surgical procedure. (Because of its popularity in the South, sterilizations were often referred to as Mississippi appendectomies.) Others were told to sign a form that they couldnt read. In 1927, civil libertarians were delighted when the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of a woman who was being sterilized against her will. At last, the most disenfranchised members of society would have their day in court. The person who was being sterilized was Carrie Buck. The doctor who was to perform the sterilization was John Bell.

The associate justice who wrote the opinion for the majority was Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. A proud defender of the Constitution and individual liberties, Holmes had authored nearly a thousand valued opinions.

On May 2, 1927, justices ruled 8-1 in favor of Carrie Bucks sterilization. Holmes wrote, Carrie Buck is a feeble-minded white woman. She is the daughter of a feeble-minded mother in the same institution, and the mother of an illegitimate feeble-minded child. It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crimes, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind. Then Holmes authored the words that placed Buck v. Bell in the pantheon of Americas most embarrassing Supreme Court decisions: Three generations of imbeciles are enough, he wrote, effectively solidifying laws that even the most ardent eugenicists thought were unenforceable. One critic later wrote that Holmess opinion represented the highest ratio of injustice per word ever signed on by eight Supreme Court justices.

On Oct. 19, 1927, her legal options exhausted, Carrie Buck was sterilized; she thought she was having an appendectomy.

In 1933, the year that he came to power, Adolf Hitler passed the Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring. The list of those to be sterilized was virtually identical to that first generated by the Eugenics Records Office in Cold Spring Harbor. Clinics were established and doctors were fined if they didnt comply with the law.

Within a year, 56,000 Germans had been sterilized; by 1935, 73,000; by 1939, 400,000, logarithmically dwarfing the number of sterilizations performed in the U.S. The procedure was so common that it had a nickname: Hitlerschnitte, Hitlers cut. Americans took note. Joseph DeJarnette, superintendent of Virginias Western State Hospital, lamented, Hitler is beating us at our own game!

Twenty years later, Buck v. Bell would be presented in support of SS officer Otto Hofmann during the Nuremberg military tribunal investigating Nazi war crimes.

The U.S. Supreme Court has never officially overturned its verdict.

A natural gas boom in the Adriatic has created teeming nurseries of self-cloning baby jellyfish – Quartz

One of the eeriest mysteries of the sea is the sudden surge in jellyfish over the last few decades. Consider the tale of the moon jellyfish. Since the first big moon jellyfish bloom was recorded in the Adriatic in 1910, moon jelly populations seemed to follow a predictable cycle. Theyd turn up in normal numbers most years, and every couple of decades, clog the shores in huge gummy swarms.

Then in 1999, something alarming happened. The huge blooms that had stippled the Adriatic only every few decades now appeared year after year. The cycle had tightenedbut what, exactly, had tightened it continues to mystify scientists.

Now a team of Slovenian marine biologists thinks theyve found a key culprit: natural gas rigs.

Computer simulations by Martin Vodopivec and his team that recreate ocean dynamics and moon jellyfish life cycles suggest that gas platforms are helping to sustain moon jellyfish blooms in the Adriatic, according to a new peer-reviewed study in Environmental Research Letters.

How exactly do gas platforms help moon jellies survive? The answer involves the most fascinatingand disturbingthing about jellyfish biology: the truly bizarre way in which they reproduce.

When two adult jellyfisha.k.a. medusasmate and produce a fertilized egg, that egg doesnt just grow into a tiny version of themselves, like most creatures. Instead, that egg is actually a totally different creatureone that will never turn into a medusa like its parents.

Also called planulae or larvae, these free-swimming eggs are tiny and are shaped a bit like a miniature flattened pear, as the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History helpfully puts it. A planula drifts around until it bangs into a smooth, hard surface that it can latch on to. Once settled, it grows into a polyp, sprouting tentacle-like appendages so that it looks like a cross between a tiny tree and a sea anemone.

Then, when conditions are right, those arm-like things begin pulsating, and out pop a dozen or so baby jellies (which scientists call ephyrae). Those are the creatures that ultimately grow into that familiar umbrella-shaped beastie that we think of when we hear the word jellyfish. Polyps can repeat that process a few more times before they croak.

So far, so linear. But polyps have a nifty trick for whiling away the months (or years) until its showtime for baby-pulsating: They reproduce asexually. Meaning, they clone themselves.

And those clones? They clone themselves too, forming dense polyp families on whatever surface theyve colonized. What look like delicate little gardens are actually high-octane jellyfish-making factories.

This seed-bank strategy is pure evolutionary golda hedge against the possibility that medusas might starve, get eaten by predators, or killed by bad weather before they can mate. Its designed to create jellyfish en masse. Since medusas odds of producing fertilized eggs that make it to the polyp phase arent great, the more clones a polyp creates, the greater the chance of species survival.

But that all depends on little pear-shaped planulae finding a good home and hunkering down on a smooth, hard surface.

A few centuries ago, those homes were scarce. The best real estate going was typically a rock or a shell. Those lucky few that managed to find one didnt tend to have much space for growing a clone colony.

An Adriatic gas rig, thoughnow theres a nice place to settle down and raise a (very extended) jellyfish family.

Drilling platforms first went up in the natural gas-rich Adriatic in the 1960s. Now there are around 150 of them, according to Vodopivec and his co-authors. That means theres scads of space for polyps to expand their insane clone posses.

Mass polyp colonization certainly would help explain why blooms began taking off around the same time the Adriatics natural gas bonanza did. But finding evidence is tricky when the proof stands only a single millimeter tall.

In 2008, Italian researchers found moon jelly polyps clustered on a sunken iron motorboat (pdf) off the coast of Italy. The polypswhich were attached both to the oysters that had settled on the stern and directly to the ship itselfsat in clusters as many as 40 polyps per square centimeter. (At that density, more than 2,400 polyps would fit on a 3M Post-It Note.)

Across the Adriatic in Slovenia, Alenka Maleja veteran jellyfish biologist and co-author of the latest paperhad been searching for moon jelly polyps since 2000, clocking more than 1,000 hours peering through at seafloor rocks through scuba masks. Malej herself never found any polyps. However, in 2009, however, an ecological survey team took a peek under the port of Koper. Encrusted with oysters, the dock pillars teemed with moon jelly polyps in maximum densities of around 27 per square centimeter. The scientists were restricted to surveying a single pier; they found polyps on all 574 of its pillars. According to their estimates, the Koper pier colony capably of releasing as many as 50 billion baby jellyfish (pdf, p.1) in the space of days.

Since then, similar moon jelly polyp colonies have been found in ports in Split and Ploe. Malej also identified a polyp colony onyou guessed iton a gas platform.

Still, even though the simulations run by Vodopivec and Malej suggest a connection, we dont know for sure that polyps are settling on rigs en masseand leading to big jellyfish bloomsfor the simple reason that theyre so hard to find.

The idea that the blooms and the boom are connected isnt far-fetched, though. Theres plenty more anecdotal and experimental evidence around the globe to support the hypothesis that the burgeoning of manmade marine surfaces drives coastal jellyfish blooms, as Malej and other jellyfish biologists argued in an exhaustive 2013 survey. For instance, 2014 study by leading jellyfish biologist Shin-ichi Uye found that after a new pier was installed in the Inland Sea of Japan, polyps quickly settled there; 25 million extra baby jellies appeared soon after. And a group of German scientists found a similar relationship between moon jelly abundance and wind farms in the Baltic Sea (paywall).

Still, the cryptic nature of these polyp colonies means a clear causal relationship remains elusive. Adding to the challenge is the fact that jellyfish blooms are also influenced by warming temperatures, overfishing, and eutrophication, to name just a few of many factors.

This mystery feeds into a much deeper jellyfish controversy. A slew of leading scientists are skeptical that a jellyfish takeover is actually happening at all.

Its clear that blooms are on the riseboth in magnitude and frequencyin some patches of the world, according to research done over the last couple decades. One of the only studies to quantify anecdotal information suggested that in more than three-fifths of large marine areas, jellyfish abundance was on the rise. Only 7% of large marine areas reported a decline.

However, the reigning counterargument to the global rise in jellyfish was put forth by many of the all-stars of jellyfish biology in 2013. Jellyfish populations, these scientists argued (pdf), go through 20-year oscillations. The oscillation camp notes that while there has been a small linear rise in jellyfish blooms since the 1970s, more data are required to determine whether this trend marks a true shift in the baseline of their abundanceor just another oscillation.

To their chagrin, academic journals seemingly love the idea of a global jellyfish takeover. A recent analysis found that a whopping half of published papers suffered from jellyfish invasion biasa narrative with horror-movie appeal that the media merrily runs with.

It may be a while before biologists know for sure whether the jellyfish invasion is temporary or here to say. But lets hope the oscillation hypothesis is correctnot just because of the havoc the creatures wreak on fishing and coastal plants, but for the sake of tourists trying to enjoy a sting-free seaside vacation.

OncoMouse This is the worlds first patented animal. Created to study the formation and treatment of cancer in humans, Harvard University was granted a patent in April 1988 for the OncoMouse, which was classified as a Transgenic Non-Human Mammal.

Later, Harvard licensed it to chemical company DuPont, which had been involved in its development. The patent generated some controversy among animal rights activists, who questioned the morality of patenting a living creature.

Pseudomonas Bacteria A new species of oil spill eating Pseudomonas bacteria was the first genetically modified creature ever patented. It was made by inserting into a single species the DNA from four species of oil spilleating bacteria in the Pseudomonas genus

AquAdvantage Salmon This is the first patented and genetically modified salmon that has been approved by the FDA for commercial production and consumption. A product of AquaBounty Technologies, it is made by adding genes to an Atlantic salmon from the Pacific Chinook and the ocean pout. The result is a GM salmon that grows two times faster than regular salmon.

GloFish The GloFish is the worlds first genetically modified pet. It is a patented zebra-fish that glows under ultraviolet light. Initially, the GloFish was not made as a pet but as a sort of biological instrument to detect water pollution. The first GloFish was made by Singaporean scientists who wanted fish that glowed whenever the water they inhabited was polluted.
