Synspira’s Therapy Candidate May Be a Game-Changer for Drug-Resistant Bacteria in CF – Cystic Fibrosis News Today
Posted: August 1, 2017 at 6:23 pm
Chronic pulmonary infections are a hallmark of lung disease in patients with cystic fibrosis. Due to the variability in bacteria that can colonize the lung and the specific antibiotic treatments that may be effective, treatment strategies are often tailored to individual patients.
But some bacterial infections are often difficult to treat across the entire population. Burkholderia cepaciacomplex (Bcc) is notoriously difficult to attack due to its natural multi-drug resistant state and its quick ability to develop resistance to antibiotics. Infections arising from Bcc can lead to permanent loss of lung function and early death in patients with CF.
Earlier this month, Synspira announced the resultsof a combination study using its inhaled polycationic glycopolymer drug candidate called PAAG and conventional antibiotics as a potential treatment for pulmonary infection caused by theBurkholderia cepaciacomplex in patients with CF.
The investigative treatment, SNSP113, is a glycopolymer-based therapy being developed as an inhaled treatment to improve lung function in patients with pulmonary bacterial infections.
SNSP113 is known to interact with the biofilms that make treating bacteria difficult in CF, and is thought to break the biofilms apart and reduce the viscosity and adhesion of mucus in the lungs. Biofilms and mucus lead to pulmonary exacerbations in CF, and SNSP113 may address both issues in cystic fibrosis.
The results published in PLOS ONE demonstrate that our inhaled glycopolymer drug candidate, PAAG, has the potential to significantly enhance the activity of antibiotics that are used for the treatment of lung infections caused by Burkholderia cepaciacomplex, a relatively uncommon but often fatal infection in cystic fibrosis,Shenda Baker, PhD,the CEO ofSynspira, said in a press release.
From a personal viewpoint, Bcc is one of those bacteria that makes me anxious to see my culture report. Its a scary one, and requires an intensive treatment plan in hopes to eradicate the bacteria from the lungs.
Part of the reason its nerve-racking is because there really are no bulls-eye treatments that have been approved to help preserve lung function. The bacteriums susceptibility to antibiotics varies tremendously, and there is a chance that no antibiotic may be effective to fight the infection.
The introduction of SNSP113 could be a game-changer in CF. If approved, the treatment would not only open up treatment options for Bcc, but may also have positive outcomes when treating other common infections in CF, like Pseudomonas. While much of the attention in cystic fibrosis has been directed toward the novel CFTR modulators, its still critically important to strive for new antibiotics in patients with CF.

CF Industries (CF) Q2 Earnings Preview: Stock to Disappoint? – Zacks.com
Posted: at 6:23 pm
CF Industries (CF - Free Report) is set to release second-quarter 2017 results after the closing bell on Aug 2.
The fertilizer maker delivered a negative earnings surprise of 44.44% in first-quarter 2017. The company posted a loss of $23 million or 10 cents per share in the quarter, as against a profit of $26 million or 11 cents recorded a year ago. Barring one-time items, adjusted earnings came in at 5 cents per share for the quarter, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 9 cents.
CF Industries missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate in three of the trailing four quarters while beating in one with an average negative surprise of 121.48%.
CF Industries shares have lost around 20.9% over the past six months, underperforming the roughly 8.1% decline of its industry.
Lets see how things are shaping up for this announcement.
Factors to Watch For
CF Industries continues to bear the brunt of pricing pressure. The company is also exposed to challenging agriculture market fundamentals.
CF Industries saw lower average selling prices across all segments in the first quarter. Urea prices have been under pressure due to higher nitrogen supply. High supply levels in the global nitrogen market due to capacity additions pressured pricing in the first quarter and remain a headwind in the June quarter.
Abundant nitrogen supply driven by new production capacity is expected weigh on global prices through 2017. CF Industries, in its first-quarter call, said that it anticipates uneven nitrogen pricing environment to continue through 2017. The company also noted that excess global nitrogen supply continues to pressure marginal producers in China and other regions. Additional nitrogen capacity is expected to come onstream globally during second-half 2017 including a significant increase in North America.
Nevertheless, CF Industries sees demand for nitrogen in North America to be relatively strong during the spring application season for nitrogen-consuming crops. It should also gain from its efforts to expand production capacity.
Earnings Whispers
Our proven model does not conclusively show that CF Industries is likely to beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate this quarter. That is because a stock needs to have both a positive Earnings ESP (Expected Surprise Prediction) and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold) for this to happen. That is not the case here, as you will see below:
Zacks ESP: The Earnings ESP for CF Industries is -25.00% as the Most Accurate Estimate stands at a loss of 10 cents while the Zacks Consensus Estimate is pegged at a loss of 8 cents. You can uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before theyre reported with our Earnings ESP Filter.
Zacks Rank: CF Industries currently carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell). Note that we caution against Sell-rated stocks (#4 or 5) going into the earnings announcement, especially when the company is seeing negative estimate revisions.
Stocks That Warrant a Look
Here are some companies in the basic materials space you may want to consider as our model shows they have the right combination of elements to post an earnings beat this quarter:

Pittsburgh Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen’s lengthy tear – OutsidePitchMLB
Posted: at 6:23 pm
Denis Poroy/Getty Images North America via Zimbio.com
The demise of Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen has been greatly exaggerated.
At least thats the way Cutch is making it seem this summer.
As the calendar flips to August, the 30-year-old mainstay is on an extended tear thats helped turn around an abysmal season for himself and the team.
McCutchen put a bow on July by slugging three home runs against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. In the months of June and July, McCutchen is batting .367 (65-for-177) with 14 homers, 42 runs batted in 11 doubles and 44 runs scored.
The resurgence is a welcome sight for Pirates fans beginning to worry about their center fielders future. McCutchen struggled throughout the 2016 campaign, ending a streak of five straight All-Star selections that included the 2013 National League Most Valuable Player award three other top-five finishes.
McCutchen ended last year with the worst slash line of his big-league career in all three categories .256/.336/.430. That kind of underwhelming performance at the plate then carried into the 2017 season and concern mounted. After an 0-for-5 day against the Atlanta Braves on May 23, McCutchens average dipped down to .200 and he had only six home runs and 20 RBI through 45 games.
The slow start added fuel to burning trade rumors that predicted the nine-year veteran didnt have much longer in black and gold.
Fast-forward two-plus months and the slash line is up to a McCutchen-like .292/.385/.535. The average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage are all team-highs and hes also Pittsburghs top home run hitter (22), run producer (66 RBI) and run scorer (68).
Wins took a little longer to catch up. After falling to a season-worst nine games under .500 (37-46) on July 3, the Bucs have won 14 of 22 and enter an eight-game homestand at 51-54. Pittsburgh remains a long-shot to reach its fourth postseason in five years, but the Pirates are within 5 1/2 games of the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs and 8 1/2 games of the second wild card berth, currently held by the Colorado Rockies.
The non-waiver trade deadline passed at 4 p.m., Monday afternoon and McCutchen remains in a Pirates uniform. That could still change, but Cutch is proving hes got a lot of high-level baseball left to play.

A reader calls the effort to remove a tribute to Confederate soldiers from Travis Park a frenzy of political correctness.
Honor the past
Re: Move statue, lest we forget what it means, Josh Brodesky, July 23:
It is time to end this mass frenzy of political correctness. Whats next on the agenda, removing Travis and Bowie from the Cenotaph because they were slave owners?
Where does it end before all stand up and say enough is enough?
Those who fought for the Confederacy were not only white. There were also Hispanics, Native Americans and blacks, and you can bet the common soldier, the basic grunt, didnt own slaves.
He was fighting for states rights, the ability to choose and not be dictated to by an all-powerful federal government.
Councilman Robert Trevio has asked, why dedicate precious space to those who fought against America? Well, for Mr. Trevios information, they were Americans fighting for what they believed in, as their forefathers did.
It is our history and our heritage. Honor it and honor them.
They deserve better than what is now being handed out to them.
James Woolums
Bathroom priorities
It appalls me that our values have dropped so low that elements of our society care more about business income than they do about a wifes privacy showering in a health club or a teen daughters privacy changing clothes in a locker room.
Do you think that 19-year-old men arent going to dare each other to invade these areas? And what I hear from local and state levels is a concern about the impact of the bathroom bill on our business income! What about the impact on our people?
What is wrong with us?
Steven J. Marques
Save the trees
I hope King Abbott will listen to the real people of Texas and not the real estate developers pushing for a ban on city tree ordinances.
The city of Rockport has a very strict tree ordinance, and it is administered very fairly to homeowners and developers.
The reason for our ordinance is obvious to visitors and residents when they see our beautiful windswept oaks that have been here for hundreds of years!
If King Abbott gets his way, visitors may see a 7-Eleven where the Big Tree once stood!
Lloyd R. Mathews, Rockport
Trafficking case
The driver of the tractor-trailer truck in which 10 people died from heatstroke and dehydration has stated that, when he parked in the Walmart parking lot, he could hear people inside.
Why didnt he open the trailer when he heard them?
That action alone tells me he knew all along that he was carrying human cargo.
His barbaric actions demand a charge of capital murder.
Ruth E. Webster
Hes no boy Scout
Donald Trump is deservedly receiving strong condemnation for his vulgar, politicized speech at the recent Boy Scout Jamboree.
Heres the irony: When Scouts gather, they solemnly raise their right hand in the Scout salute and recite the Scout Law: A scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent yet our current president possesses none of these characteristics.
Bill Celaya
How do they sleep?
Dear Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, and Rep. Lamar Smith:
When can my family receive the same health care coverage you and your family have, which we taxpayers provide? I was just wondering, as I have been asking this question for a long time now. Its remarkable that you can lay down to sleep with the knowledge that your actions cause such pain and uncertainty.
Add to that the obscene tax breaks your bill would have given to the upper 5 percent.
Wait Im sorry youre all Christian devotees. Never mind.
David M. Adkisson
Beg my pardon!
According to the latest buzz, the White House Occupant is inquiring about whom he can pardon should the need arise, including himself.
So, we shouldnt worry that hes coming unhinged if he is seen talking to himself. Hes probably saying, Pardon me!
Rachel V. Diaz-Kennon
Broader collusion
If the Republican members of the House and Senate refuse to acknowledge collusion between the Trump administration and Russia, despite all the proof presented, does this mean they, too, could be guilty of collusion?
I think it does, and it shows these Republicans are choosing party over justice.
Voters, Republican and Democrat, should not forget those actions when they vote.
Ron Soele
Wake up, America
Questions that need to be answered: Why is Donald Trump so avidly against the Russian investigation. Why is he trying to discredit special counsel Robert Mueller from checking his financial records? What is he trying to hide?
Is he arrogant enough to think hes above the law because hes president? He already has the country off balance with his unpredictability.
Congressional Republicans should get over being afraid of Trump and grow a backbone!
Do something before he succeeds in turning America into a second Russia. And dont think it cant happen here, because it can.
People need to wake up and realize what hes doing to our country.
Leafy Travis

A Dam in Brazil Has Altered the Course of Evolution – Atlas Obscura
Posted: at 6:21 pm
Part of the reservoir created by the Serra da Mesa dam. Felipe Venncio/CC BY 2.0
Thanks to the Serra da Mesa Dam in central Brazil, close to 300 islands were created in the span of just two years. More than 650 square miles of the Cerrado region were inundated by the reservoir, which finished filling in 1998. The region is considered a biodiversity hotspot. By so altering the landscape, the dam and reservoir threaten that, but by creating new environments and isolating species, theyre showing how life adapts to all the changes we throw at it.
The hilltops that became islands were once home to a variety of lizards that eat termites, and isolation impacted different varieties of lizards in different ways. Larger species died out (though they survive on the mainland) because they couldnt find enough termites on their islands maintain large body size. So Gymnodactylus amarali, a small gecko, inherited a whole termite buffet.
There was just one problem. For most of the G. amarali geckos, the termites were too big to eatbigger than their mouths. But some of the individual lizards were lucky enough to have slightly larger heads. So they gobbled up termites, thrived, and passed the large-head trait on to their offspring. When scientists from Brazil and the United States compared the island-dwelling lizards with their mainland relativesseparated by only 15 years and a short stretch of waterthe researchers found the island lizards had heads that are about four percent larger. The researchers write in their report that the shift is astonishing because it was so rapid and the lizard populations on the five islands they studied evolved the same trait independently of each other.
It is possible, Science reports, that the larger head size isnt a result of evolution, but rather better growth thanks to the new environment and altered diet. However, the researchers believe evolution explains the size difference, and plan to check for genetic changes in the future.

Bio station lecture to focus on bird nest evolution – Petoskey News-Review
Posted: at 6:21 pm
PELLSTON Jordan Price, a University of Michigan Biological Station faculty member, will present a lecture about bird nest evolution at 7:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Gates Lecture Hall at the biological station near Pellston.
Perching birds of the order Passeriformes, such as warblers, sparrows, thrushes and finches, are considered by birders and ornithology enthusiasts as master nest-builders. Their abilities as nest architects are thought to have played an important role in how they evolved and diversified (through evolutionary radiation).
This group of birds originated in Australia, and they were so successful from an evolutionary standpoint that more than half of all bird species in the world are passerines. Their nests are likely an important factor in that success.
When analyzing nest evolution, biologists often assume that nest architecture became more complex over time, progressing from simple cup-shaped nests to more elaborate domed structures with roofs. But which came first? Thats the question Price will explore in his talk, The Surprising Evolution of Bird Nests.
Hell describe the evolutionary history of passerine nests, focusing on early Australian lineages and species found here in Michigan. In the process, hell explain what nest-building behavior can tell us about the evolution of bird behavior, in general.
Price is the Steven Muller Distinguished Professor of the Sciences at St. Marys College of Maryland and is the chair of the biology department. His research integrates techniques from behavioral ecology and molecular phylogenetics to investigate the evolutionary histories of animal traits, especially the behaviors, sounds, and color patterns of birds. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and bachelors degree from Queens University in Canada.
Price is the University of Michigan Biological Stations Hann Endowed lecturer for 2017.
The University of Michigan Biological Station entrance is located at the intersection of Riggsville Road and East Burt Lake Road. Follow the signs to parking near the Gates Lecture Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Staff ask that no pets be brought to the biological station, as they need to protect ongoing scientific research projects.

Several documentaries have just been released on DVD or Blu-ray, including Kansas vs. Darwin, Dying to Know: Ram Dass & Timothy Leary, I Am the Blues and Alive and Kicking.
Alive and Kicking glances back at swing dancings roots in 1920s Harlem and its ancestral ties to hip-hop. But the documentary focuses on the present, showcasing comments from young dance partners for whom swing is a way to dress up, have fun, improvise within set boundaries and develop personal skills. For some, its a finger in the eye of contemporary digitalized existence, a way to feel alive. Many scenes were shot at high-stepping ballroom contests.
The great postwar blues artiststhe Muddy Waters and the John Lee Hookersare gone, but their musical children continue. I Am the Blues is a journey through the muggy backcountry of the American South with Grammy-winner Bobby Rush and less-known 70-something-year-old survivors of an earlier era. All are filled with memories, are still musically proficient and often capable of moving performances. Tin-roofed juke joints and dusty rural roads are among the settings.
As astronauts first ventured into outer space, Harvard psychology professors Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (aka Ram Dass) began exploring inner space through psychedelics. Narrated by Robert Redford, Dying to Know crisscrosses around the lives of those two academic adventurers with emphasis on a conversation between them shortly before Learys death (1996). They werent playing around for kicks but used science to transcend science in an exploration of the human psycheand perhaps the divine.
The 2005 hearing by the Kansas Board of Education on the validity of Darwinism drew international attention and is the subject of this documentary. What emerges is the self-perception of many creationists as rebels, kicking against elitists trying to impose an alien worldview. Their fundamentalism is aided, ironically, by the pervasive relativism of our time in which sincerity trumps factuality. Several Kansans interviewed by director Jeff Tamblyn intelligently blend science with philosophy and faith.

Robotics camp prepares students for competition – Portsmouth Daily Times
Posted: at 6:20 pm
Theres a new opportunity for students interested in building their own robots and even competing in robotics competitions.
Scioto County Career and Technical Center (SCCTC) is offering a first-year VEX robotics camp that is designed to help students prepare to compete in a robotics competition.
The three-day camp will be held August 9, 10 and 11, and will teach area students how to build and program their own robots.
SCCTC Central Office Administrator Josh Shoemaker explained that in addition to working with instructors, students will have the opportunity to learn from VEX professionals from across the state.
Such camps are typically $800; however, this year the local camp will be free of charge in hopes of growing the field of robotics and engineering in southern Ohio and Scioto County.
Students participating in the camp will be encouraged to further expand their knowledge by taking engineering classes at their local school districts. Shoemaker explained that SCCTC has eight engineering programs in local school districts. The camp will also prepare students to take part in VEX robotics teams at each of the eight schools that will compete at the county and state level throughout the school year.
Last year, SCCTC hosted one state robotics competition, bringing in 100 students from approximately 20 schools.
It was very successful, which is why we will be expanding from one competition to three next school year, Shoemaker stated.
The county competition is planned for fall with state competitions to follow in the winter.
The summer robotics camp will be held at SCCTC and will begin each day at 9 a.m. It is being offered by RamTech. RamTech offers robotics and advanced manufacturing training for high school students and adults. For more information about the summer robotics camp, contact Josh Shoemaker at 740-259-5522.
