Artist Shaming on the rise? – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

Posted: July 7, 2017 at 2:21 am

Earlier this week, Armin Van Buuren premiered his new track Sunny Days on his radio show, A State of Trance. It was a big moment for him and it was a highly-anticipated track. Of course, it wasnt the most trancy track, but it had a happy summer vibe which is exactly what he aimed to create and the track managed to do it successfully.

However as soon as the track was premiered, it received a lot of backlash from various people. Not everyone was very pleased with how the track sounded, and its okay. Not everyone has to like every track that is possibly released. Its perfectly fine. If one wishes to state their opinions regarding the same also, its not an issue. Each person can voice their opinions as they wish. But things start going wrong when people start shaming the artist for the work they have done. Its not positive and constructive criticism, but abuses that are hurled at the artist, which in my opinion is disgusting.

An artist doesnt choose to restrict his creativity to a specific genre. And if they wish to experiment with different sounds, its wholly their decision. If one is not in favor of it, dont listen to the track. Or listen to another artist who still chooses to make music within the boundaries of the specific genre.

One can never know if something will work out until and unless they experiment or try something new. Sometimes an idea if implemented well, may sound brilliant. In some cases, it may not. Doesnt mean that the artist has changed or chooses to produce a bad track. In the case of Armin, This is what it feels like was again not the most trancy track, but it got him recognition and fame and even a Grammy nomination. The track was not necessarily trance, and I personally am also not a great fan of the track, but it doesnt mean that the track was a bad one. If an artist chooses to take the safe path and produce work that is literally based off templates from his previous track, he is criticized for his lack of creativity. If he or she decides to try something new and tries to blend in a few elements from other genres, then also, they are criticized for not sticking to their so called specific styles or genres. So if both are wrong, what should he or she be doing? Because nothing that he or she makes will collectively satisfy everyone.

Who determines the rules by which an artist plays? Or who determines their so called styles? Why should an artist be restricted to a particular style of music, that too not out of his or her own free will? Embrace was again not the best album that came from Armin. It was not trance. But he had very clearly mentioned it that he was trying to experiment with different instruments with this album. Every track sees the incorporation of a different style of music and set of instruments with trance to produce a fusion. It was a unique concept, probably wasnt implemented too well to the liking of the people. But this doesnt mean that the album was terrible. It extremely upsetting to see people criticize it and curse the artist

When an artist plays a set at a mainstage of a huge festival, he or she is thrown in front of a mix bag. Crowds having people who love various genres of music. So, when they play a set, they have to take all of that into consideration. So, their sets tend to lean slightly towards the commercial side as it has the most crowd appeal. On the other hand, when they play a set at a specific genre dominated stage, they know that 90% of the fans love the genre and they can play a good set within the boundaries of the genre. Here, their sole priority is to appeal to the people at this stage and they can do it well. Just because they have to play a partly commercial set on the mainstage, doesnt mean they are sell-outs.

A similar situation was faced by quite a few musicians and artists who have gotten frustrated and eventually choose to leave the rat race. All that I am trying to say here is, as fans today, we tend to get a little too cynical about peoples work. If one cant appreciate what an artist does, its perfectly fine. You dont have to. Just because we have the freedom of speech and there is no form of moral policing on the internet, doesnt mean we can say anything derogatory to an artist. Today, I speak about Armin, because its the most recent one that has taken place. Its not like he isnt producing trance.Saint Vitus under his Gaia moniker was a good trance track. Probably not as good as some of his classic work, but yes, it was a good track.

Through this article, I do not wish to attack any genre or its fans. Its just directed toward that one section of people who tend to cross their limits when it comes to getting critical and negative about the work of a musician or an artist. Everyone has a choice when it comes to their listening preferences. Some may not like how an artist is progressing. Some may feel that the artist has become too commercial or cant produce as well as they used to before. But all I can request is, do not shame an artist. Do not put down their work and call it disgusting.

Rewiring the brain to treat depression – WRCB-TV

Posted: at 2:20 am

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Each year American's spend billions on antidepressants, but studies show they can be ineffective in up to 40 percent of all patients. Bob Holmes was one of them.

Bob Holmes says "They tried to adjust my medication, but the medication had side effects that weren't desirable."

Holmes is among the 16-million people in the U.S. who suffer major depressive episodes each year. Thatnumberincreased 18-percent over the last decade, which is why some doctors are taking a different approach.

Doctors are beaming magnetic pulses deep inside patients' brains to change the way depression symptoms are perceived.

Dr. Andrew Leuchter, UCLA Health says, "We are used to thinking of the brain as a chemical organ, but, it's also an electrical organ."

Dr. Ian Cook, UCLA Medical says, "It's called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or T-M-S. It's currently F-D-A approved only to treat depression, but doctors say it may prove helpful in a wide range of conditions, by rewiring a network of signals in the brain."

Doctors tell us that T-M-S can feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but many patients quickly get used to it and report substantial relief from their symptoms of depression within a few weeks.

Dr. Leuchter says, "What TMS is doing is changing how thenetwork functions, really rebooting the network to improve symptoms of mood, anxiety, and chronic pain."

Which may be why many patients treated for depression also say it helps relieve their pain. Raising provocative questions about whether T-M-S could one day become a viable alternative to opioids.

Dr. Ian Cook says, "This is really a transformative kind of therapy, but in medicine there's always the wish to do better, to help more people than what we do now."

But for now, it's made a dramatic difference in Bob's depression.

Bob Holmes says, "It provided that kind of jolt to get my brain to start work again, normally."

Prep baseball: WSR runs down CF – Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier

Posted: at 2:18 am

WAVERLY Sometimes the smallest part of a baseball game becomes the biggest play to decide the winner.

Thursday night, the Waverly-Shell Rock coaching staff detected a small crack in the armor of Cedar Falls offense, and took advantage of an opportunity that helped knock off the Tigers in an exciting 5-4 non-conference victory.

The Go-Hawks had just rallied to take the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the sixth, but the Tigers began a rally of their own in the seventh.

Senior Austin Marchesani reached base via a walk with one out, then surrendered his base to a pinch runner. One out later, a rundown began on a play at first, and the Tigers were suddenly done.

I have to give all the credit to coach (Jared) Pirkl on that call, Go-Hawks skipper Casey Klunder said. He noticed the kid leaning on the pitch before and call out for the pick-off. The play was perfect but we had to really work hard for that 21st out, because the ball exchange hands multiple times during the run down.

Six times to be exact with the final ball handler being Ryan Willis who applied the tag on the worn down runner.

Hats off to Ryan for taking charge there and calling for the ball, Klunder said. That play took like 15 minutes and it lasted way too long.

With the tag being the final out the Go-Hawks had plenty to celebrate. Not only did the victory give them a 22-8 mark, it also gave them the confidence they need going into the final two games of the regular season.

We have the utmost respect for Cedar Falls and their program, Klunder said. We always get up for this game because we are going against such a great program and coaching staff. It is always a fun game to play in, and tonight my hat goes off to Brady Leonard. He pitch a great game and had the game winning hit. I believe he is 3-1 right now, but we are 8-1 with him as a starter.

The hit came in the sixth inning with the Go-Hawks trailing 4-3.

Ryan Willis began the frame reaching base by an error, and Luke Willis advanced him with a walk.

Hunter Destival delivered a shot out to left field that scored Ryan Willis, putting Luke at third.

Leonard came to the plate and drove the ball deep enough to center field to plate Luke Willis with the eventual winning run.

I thought I could get one deep enough to score him (Luke), Leonard said. When I saw it go that deep I had no doubt he was going to score. I did not think that it would be the winning run, because CF was coming up to bat and they already had eight hits in the game. It wasnt over yet and anything can happen.

The Tigers (16-14-1) came up short with their rally, as the Go-Hawks (22-8) executed their pick-off chance to perfection.

I felt pretty confident in my abilities to throw and knew that Cedar Falls can hit the ball, added Leonard. I just went out with the mentality that I would throw my game and let my defense come up with the plays, and they came up with some big ones.

The Tigers missed their chances to add to their 4-3 lead in the fifth inning as Connor Schultz stroked a triple with two outs, but the bats failed to bring him across. Cedar Falls also stranded another runner in scoring position in the third.

This was kind of like a tune up game for us to get ready for next week, Tigers coach Nick Klein said. We did not do some things well, and we are not playing very good baseball right now.

The Tigers have hit a slump of sorts as they have dropped eight of their last 10 games.

Waverly is a good team and we just did not finish the game well, Klein said. We have to learn to finish these games to win.

Nationals CF Taylor leaves game – KXLY Spokane

Posted: at 2:18 am

WASHINGTON -- Nationals center fielder Michael A. Taylor left Washington's game against the Atlanta Braves in the top of the fourth inning Thursday night due to an undisclosed reason.

Taylor reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning and then grounded out to third in the third, but there was no apparent sign of an injury. The Nationals are one of the few major league teams that do not announce in-game injuries.

Taylor became the regular center fielder in late April when Adam Eaton strained his left knee when he hit the first base bag at Nationals Park in a weird way.

A Florida native, Taylor is hitting .278 with 12 homers, 35 RBIs and 10 steals. Brian Goodwin moved from left to center, and Ryan Raburn took over in left for the Nationals in the top of the fourth.

The start of the game was delayed 3 hours, 5 minutes by the threat of heavy rain that never materialized. A light rain fell before the start of the game, and Nationals Park took on a lot of water during a rainout Wednesday against the New York Mets.

NextSeed Crowdfunding: Out of 21 Successful Reg CF Offers, 13 are Food Related – Crowdfund Insider

Posted: at 2:18 am

NextSeed, a Reg CF crowdfunding platform based in Austin, Texas, has successfully funded every issuer it has listed on its platform. As far as we know, there are only two other Reg CF platforms that can claim the 100% funded claim today. NextSeed is a debt-based crowdfunding platform and does not list issuers raising capital by selling shares in their company. Founded by CEO Youngro Lee, NextSeed was recentlydescribed by Lee as a community-driven small business fundraising platform utilizing crowdfunding laws.

In a quick review of the crowdfunding platform there is a clear leaning in the type of campaigns that are being listed. NextSeed is ratcheting up the funding rounds in the Food and Beverage category.

To date, out of 21 successful crowdfunding rounds, 13 are food and beverage related. If you look at the amount raised, $2,982,000 has gone into food & beverage and $1,124,100 into everything else.

The successful food & beverage related Reg CF campaigns are as follows:

The non Food & Beverage related crowdfunding rounds are below:

And what about currently live crowdfunding campaigns? The food and beverage theme continues with three live food and beverage crowdfunding offers:

The only non-food and beverage live offer is IgnitedStudios, an LA based co-working space.

A couple of observations. First, Reg CF clearly appeals to a consumer facing offer where investors have an affinity to, or interest in, the business. Naturally, food and beverage related issuers are a match. The next observation is that the offers on NextSeed started small but have progressively gotten larger. I wonder how soon they will start hitting the $1.07M ceiling?

As NextSeed continues to hone its service and expand its reach it will be interesting to see how this community driven funding platform evolves.

5 Reasons to Think Twice About Animal Cloning – Care2.com

Posted: at 2:16 am

Dolly the cloned sheep was born more than two decades ago on July 5. As the first mammal cloned from an adult cell, she remains one of the most famous cloned creatures today.

Since then, cloning has progressed greatly, but the process occupies anethical gray area. Animal cloning may have the potential tobring back extinct species, but according to a Gallup poll conducted earlier this year, most Americans do not morally support cloning. When considering the future of cloning, here are some animal rights concerns to keep in mind.

Cloned animals often live shorter and sicklierlives than their naturally produced counterparts. For instance, the New Zealand-based AgResearch shut its doors in 2011 because too many animals died in its studies.Only 10 percent of the cloned animals even survived research trials, according to the company. The National Human Genome Research Instituteadds that cloned sheep can bebigger at birth and have defective livers, brains and hearts. They also tend to die younger.

In 2013, UK pet owners got the opportunity to clone beloved dogs after they died. However, the process set some people up for disappointment when their new pet isntthe same as itsgenetic counterpart. Care2s Steve Williams explainsthat these expectations could lead owners to get rid of their dogs, whether byreturning them, taking them to an animal shelter or opting for euthanasia.

As the Humane Society of the United States notes, pet cloning doesnt get the same federal scrutiny that animal testing facilities do in the United States. The Department of Agriculture doesnt even require those cloning cats and dogs to follow the bare-bones rules of the Animal Welfare Act.

Animals involved in cloning are often exposed to painful and invasive research practices and kept in sterile, uncomfortable conditions. As the Humane Society says, The egg donors and/or surrogate mothers are subjected to painful hormone treatments to manipulate their reproductive cycles. These animals are also subjected to invasive surgery to harvest eggs or implant embryos, and the surrogate mothers endure an additional surgery to deliver the baby.

From a more abstract line of thought, some argue cloning devalues animals because it treats them as commodities. A paper from the University of Pennsylvanias Center for Bioethicsstates:

While cloning opponents admit that animals are already considered property and products, they argue that cloning takes this objectification to new levels. Life for animals in agriculture, research, and the pharmaceutical industry is already bad enough, its argued; cloning will desensitize us further from the suffering of these entities, placing them even more firmly in the thing category.

While cloning has its place, these ethical problems must be addressed.
