First ever FIBA U17 Oceania Development Camp a huge success – FIBA

Oceania
Four different nations took part in the FIBA Oceania Development Camp 2017
GUAM Every two years, teams from around the Oceania come together to compete at the FIBA U17 Oceania Championships. It is a chance for the best youth players to compete against each other, make new friends and determine a champion.
For some countries, it is the chance to size themselves up against regional powerhouses, Australia and New Zealand, who boast huge populations and notoriously talented youth basketball teams.
With amazing basketball facilities, national junior high-performance programs and teams of people managing the development of basketball in their country, Australia and New Zealand always prove to be a formidable foe. Whilst others countries in the region only have one or two volunteers to manage all basketball matters in the country and play their National Championships on outdoor courts.
All nations share the same love and passion for the sport of basketball but some have more development opportunities and resources than others. This is why FIBA in Oceania created the FIBA Oceania Development Camp.
Following the group phase of the FIBA U17 Oceania Championships 2017, teams were split into Division A and Division B. The Division A teams played off for a medal whereas the Division B teams received a once in a lifetime opportunity for some of these athletes.
At the conclusion of the Division B Medal games, players and coaches from these were invited to attend a 2-day development camp conducted by FIBA in Oceania Development Manager Annie La Fleur. Guest coaches included Basketball Australia Head of High Performance Coach Development Peter Lonogan, New Zealand U17 Mens Head Coach Miles Pierce and New Zealand U17 Womens Head Coach Jody Cameron.
The focus of the camp was on "the fantastic five of basketball - pivot, pass, dribble, shoot and individual defense, said Mr. Lonogan.
Picture 50 teenage athletes from the Marshall Islands, New Caledonia, Palau and Tahiti national teams together on the court, working together and learning from each other. Some of these athletes had never played on a court with floorboards before this event and now they are being coached by some of the best in the region.
FIBA Oceania has had a strong commitment to player & coach development for a long time and it was an honor to play a small part in this endeavor. The energy for learning is always great in these sessions and the Pacific athletes were very receptive.
Coach Pierce working one-on-one with the athletes
This was a very humbling experience for me, added Mr. Pierce. It felt amazing being able to work with these kids, they were great. Even with some language barriers with the French speaking athletes, you could see how eager they were to listen and learn.
It was fantastic to see all of these athletes taking everything in, said La Fleur. They were very receptive to what the coaches had to say and tried to perfect everything they asked. Growing up in Papua New Guinea, we were never exposed to this level of coaching. I am very proud to be a part of something that is providing these types of opportunities to athletes.

Malaysia go down to Qatar in Asia-Oceania Davis Cup, miss out promotion – New Straits Times Online
Posted: at 12:36 pm
KUALA LUMPUR: Any hopes of securing an immediate return to Group II were dashed after the national team went down 2-0 to Qatar under unfortunate circumstances in their final Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group III match in Colombo, Sri Lanka today.
The opening game saw Perlis-born Koay Hao Sheng going down in three sets 6-7 (7-9), 6-1, 4-6 to Jabor Al-Mutawa after which Assri Merzuki took to the court for the second singles against Shanna Mubarak.
Assri, however, was forced to retire from the match due to an ankle injury which saw Qatar securing a straightforward 2-0 win. The Sarawakian was leading 3-2 in the opening set when he was forced to call it quits.
National head coach Muliyadi Jamal was not happy with the condition of the clay courts used for the match.
"It is very sad for our campaign to end this way," said a dejected Muliyadi.
"The court surface was bad, it was dry and cracked in certain places. We lodged a complaint with the tournament referee. It is disappointing.
"Assri had to be rushed to the hospital and we are now waiting for doctor's report. Hopefully it's not that bad as we can't afford to lose our key player for the Sea Games."
Christian Didier Chin was scheduled to take to the court for the doubles with Assri.
The national team, which will remain in Group III next year, would have qualified for the semi-finals had they won against Qatar. Malaysia had defeated Turkmenistan (3-0) and United Arab Emirates (2-1) but went down 2-1 to second seeds Lebanon earlier in the competition.

Seychelles Tourism Board moves to educate Kenyan travel agents on the destination – eTurboNews
Posted: at 12:35 pm
Seychelles had the opportunity to boost the knowledge of Kenyan travel agents, enticing them to promote and sell the island destination among Kenyas outbound tourism market, as the Seychelles Tourism Board joined the recent Spotlight workshops in Nairobi.
The workshops were conducted at the Raddison Blu Hotel and Villa Rosa Kempiniski in Nairobi on July 6 and 7.
Seychelles was among 10 tourist destinations at the two-day event, which saw the participation of some 30 exhibitors and 187 agents.
Kenyan Travel agents at the Seychelles table were treated to detailed presentations made by the Seychelles Tourism Boards Senior Marketing Executive, Mrs Amia Jovanovic-Desir.
The Spotlight Travel workshops is an initiative of the Houston Travel Marketing Services that has been organising such workshops in Nairobi over the past 15 years. The aim is to promote outbound travel from Kenya to inter-regional destinations within East Africa, as well as to the rest of Africa and the Indian Ocean.
For Seychelles, the recent spotlights workshop was the perfect opportunity to shed more light on the destinations products and services, which local trade partners are offering to the different market segments.
Mrs Jovanovic-Desir noted that In order to better sell the destination, one should have sound knowledge of the range of products and services on offer. However, this is one lacking raised by the agents who attended the training, which they say is hindering the firm demand and sales, when it comes to the Seychelles market.
Statistics show that visitor arrivals to Seychelles from key markets in the region, including Kenya have dropped in 2017. From January to June, Seychelles welcomed a total of 823 visitors from Kenya compared to 1,044 visitors during the same period in 2016, which represents a drop of 21 percent. This is in spite of direct air links, with Kenya Airways having served the Nairobi-Seychelles route for many years.
Mrs Jovanovic-Desir seized the opportunity at the spotlight workshops to hold discussions with representatives of Kenya Airways on how to consolidate the partnership which exists between the two sides and further combine their efforts on a more strategic marketing approach.
We have thus agreed to work together so as to encourage more educational trips, as well as media visits, this will offer them the opportunity to experience the destination from the broader angle, she said.
Mrs Jovanovic-Desir added that such visits will allow the agents to have a better understanding of Seychelles which is a destination that aims to welcome tourists from all market segments, and also offers affordable products, including accommodations owned by the locals that tend to offer personalised services.
Kenyas expatriate community on the lookout for short-haul flights to destinations offering the perfect retreat, as well as those looking for twin-sector experiences were also highlighted as potential markets.
The desire and determination to make Seychelles one of the destinations they envision to push on the Kenyan market was very apparent, through questions raised by the tour operators, who also left comments highlighting their desire to visit Seychelles and giving their commitment to promote the destination the best they can.
Amazing, stunning destination. The presentation was wonderful, said Topster Moraa from Johnson Tours and Travels International.
Commenting on the outcome of the workshops, Mrs Jovanovic-Desir who is confident that the exposure will lead to results in the near future said the majority of the agents who attended the presentations have never been to Seychelles to experience the destination personally, thus justifying the lack of destination awareness.
Such workshops should be encouraged mainly on markets where we cannot bring most of the key tour operators and travel agents to our shores to sample the destination, after all, seeing is believe. After all, one has to take action if you want anything to happen, she said.

The airline is upgrading its technology in order to deliver the best travel experience every step of the way.
The new common-use terminal equipment will enable Air Seychelles to connect to various departure control systems used by other airlines operating to Seychelles, providing more flexibility to our ground handling operations. Even more importantly, it will enable us to streamline the check-in and boarding process for all the international travellers that are handled at Seychelles International Airport, making sure they have a smooth experience. Said Roy Kinnear, CEO at Air Seychelles
He further added that this development is yet another innovative technological solution from a list of things that they want to implement in order to assure an improved guest experience.
Terminal facilities usage will be optimized, the flow of passengers will be sped up, and the service levels for all international travellers from Seychelles Airport will also be enhanced.
Introducing cutting-edge CUPPS infrastructure at Seychelles International Airport puts us on par with some of the most modern airports in the world. Having a standardized system for handling passengers will improve the airport experience for all international travellers, irrespective of the airline they are flying with, which is a fantastic achievement. We have developed a strong relationship with both Air Seychelles and SITA and are pleased to have worked together to install this new technology. Mentioned Gilbert Faure, CEO of the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority
With this in mind, travellers can benefit from excellent traveling experience.

Sandals Is Looking to Wall Street to Expand in the Caribbean – Skift
Posted: at 12:35 pm
Sandals Resorts International is looking to Wall Street to help finance as many as a dozen new Caribbean hotels as the luxury resort manager ditches its conservative strategy ofbuilding just one project per year and keeping debt right down.
CEO Adam Stewart, who runs Sandals with his father, Gordon Butch Stewart, said the closely-held company is not for sale and has no immediate plans to go public, contrary to rumors. Instead, its looking beyond the regional Caribbean banks it has traditionally used, to fund the biggest expansion in its history.
Were open to taking on more debt to build more than on hotel at a time. We want to build three or four hotels a year, Stewart said in a telephone interview. We are trying to look for bigger capital to grow. We know exactly what to do and how to do it. But up until now weve been restricted by the balance sheet of regional banks.
The company, which owns and operates 23 resorts across seven Caribbean islands, is in talks with Deutsche Bank and others to raise money as it weighs the new projects, including four hotels it plans to build next year, Stewart said. While he declined to say how much he is seeking to borrow, the company next year is spending about $375 million to build a 580-room Barbados hotel and around $500 million to construct a resort on the island of Tobago in the southern Caribbean.
Were not looking at $200 million any more, he said.
With its expansion, Sandals is aiming to capitalize on a Caribbean tourism boom. A record 29.3 million tourists visited the islands last year, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. And 41,000 new rooms are under construction or being planned in the region, said STR, which tracks the industry, up more than 40 percent from a year earlier.
The increase was led by several major projects, such as a 2,000-room casino hotel in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and a 934-room beach resort in Varadero, Cuba, STR said.
Tourism is the biggest source of foreign currency earnings for many countries in the region. Stewart said growth in the Caribbean tourism has attracted interest from private equity and some of the hotel industrys biggest names.
While the company does not disclose revenues, Stewart said the company is very sound, with a ratio of debt to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of less than one.
The Marriotts, the Hiltons, the Hyatts, institutional capital and private equity, theyre all looking to get a piece of the action in the Caribbean, he said. Its at an inflection point. I expect to see a massive boom in the 2-star or 3-star level of hotels.
Sandals, the biggest private employer in Jamaica, targets the luxury vacation market. The average daily rate across its portfolio of 6,000 rooms is around $550, according to Stewart. Its opening over-the-water suites in Jamaica and St. Lucia, which come with a dedicated butler and around-the-clock service, for as much as $3,000 a night.
Were easily among the most expensive and were proud of it, Stewart said.

Norma G’s Caribbean restaurant starts construction in Jefferson Chalmers – Detroit Metro Times
Posted: at 12:35 pm
Norma G's food truck is the only in the city rolling out Caribbean cuisine and Trinidadian comfort foods, and for that, it has quickly established itself as a favorite.
But owner Lester Gouvia says there's a lot more he can do with his native cuisine when he opens a casual fine dining restaurant in the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood.
"A lot of the dishes I want to offer are hard to do in the food truck, or do in a takeout container," he says. "This is really about being able to provide food in more of a comfortable setting. A lot of dishes I do that don't translate well on the food truck, we'll do here."
Construction is underway and Gouvia says he's targeting a fall opening at 14700 E. Jefferson Ave., but he stresses that there's no firm date in place.
When Norma G's does open, expect traditional Caribbean and Trinidadian dishes - Gouvia was born in Trinidad - like coo coo with stew fish, callaloo, or codfishballs. The latter is made with dried codfish that's sauted with herbs, vegetables, other seasoning, and mashed potatoes. It's blended together into a ball, fried, and served with a garlic or chipotle mayo.
Gouvia says Norma's menu will be vegan friendly, and notes that the flavors of Trinidad are influenced by a range of cuisines from the island's colonizers like the French, Spanish, Dutch, and English. Even Chinese populations made their way through the Caribbean and left their prints on some of the recipes.
Though Gouvia says most Detroiters aren't familiar with plates like coo coo or codfish, he suspects that they'll warm up to the flavors.
"There are
all these flavors and influences from all over the world ... Codfish is a Spanish thing. It's not a dish that's strange to the world, but it's a dish that's strange to people here. But
my son eats it, so if he does, believe me other people will like it," Gouvia jokes.
"I'm not knocking that, but when I think about Caribbean - it's about the food, atmosphere meeting other people, and I want to make the restaurant comfortable. Colorful and casual, but not tacky," he says. "There will be nice
furnishing going in and colors will be key. Hopefully I can deliver an atmosphere where people want to hang out."
A job in the financial industry led Gouvia to metro Detroit. He only intended to stay a few years, but never left. Jefferson-Chalmers appealed to him more than downtown, Midtown, or other neighborhoods because he feels that Norma's will have a greater impact there.
"I didn't see myself having a big impact Midtown or downtown, and financially it doesn't make sense because the price points are too high," he says.
"I'm in business, I've got to generate revenue, and pay people well, but I ... want to help generate traffic and be a part of the change, and I think this is still one of neighborhoods that has potential for that."
Gouvia worked with SWOT City to pull together funding for the roughly $450,000 project from a variety of sources, including a $60,000 Motor City Match Grant. He's leasing the building from the Jefferson Inc. Stay tuned for more details.
