John Wall agrees to four-year, ‘supermax’ extension with the Wizards – Washington Post
Posted: July 22, 2017 at 8:09 am
John Wall electedto continue his all-star career with the Washington Wizards, agreeing Friday night to a four-year deal with a player option in the fourth year. The designated player veteran extension will keep him as the teams cornerstone and pay him $170 million.
Wall, the 26-year-old point guard who has played all seven seasons with the Wizards, will be tied to Washington for at least the next five years two on his current deal, and three on the extension before he canopt out. By earning all-NBA honors for the first time after a career year in 2016-17 he was third team Wall became eligible to sign the extension that begins in 2019. Through the life of thecontract, Wall will earn 35 percent of the salary cap.
The deal signals Walls long-term commitment to the franchise, as well as his contentmentwith the directionin which the Wizards are heading.
He wouldnt have signed it if he wasnt, a person familiar with Walls thinking told The Washington Post late Friday night.
In a video posted on the Uninterrupted Twitter account,Wall announced his agreementby speaking directly to a handheld recording device.
Yall know I wasnt going nowhere, Wall said intothe camera. Re-signed with the Wizards, man. Signed my extension. You know where I want to be. I love being in D.C. I love the organization. I love my teammates. I love the amazing fans. Just had to think it out with my family and friends. We made a decision. You know where I want to be at.
Im happy Im coming back, Wall continued. Yall know what Im going for. Definitely going to bring yall that championship. Thats my ultimate goal, and I aint going to stop till I get it. Peace. Love.
Though the news broke late Friday night, Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsis made a bold prediction about Walls future Wednesday following the news conference for Otto Porter Jr. and his four-year max deal.
My prediction is John Wall will sign his extension, Leonsis told reporters. He wants to be here, and my goal is to have no drama.
Mission accomplished.
During the Las Vegas Summer league, Leonsis and team President Ernie Grunfeld met with Rich Paul, Walls agent, to discuss a myriad of topics. The extension, naturally, topped the list. Though Wall could have signed the extension at the start of free agency July 1, he waited. Instead of simply signing, Wall and his representatives wanted to structure the deal in ways that bettered his current contract.
For instance, when Wall signed a rookie extension in July 2013, he did not have a player option. Now, not only does Wall get his out but he also has a 15-percent trade kicker in new extension.
Throughoutthe contract discussions, drama was absent as Wall consistently said he wanted to remain with the Wizards.
Im just chillin. Just trying to figure out to negotiate it and manipulate it the way you want it to be, Wall said, updating reporters on the status of the extension July 10. Everybody know where I want to play and where I want to be. Everybody took it the wrong way I wanted to wait. Its a big decision. I love D.C.
Everything I do, I do it for the city of D.C. I do so much in the community. If it wasnt for the love of that, I wouldnt do it.
Last season, Wall averaged 23.1 points, 10.7 assists and 4.2 rebounds while leading the Wizards (49-33) to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Wallset the franchise career recordfor assists (4,610) and steals(870) and became the first player in league history to average at least 20 points, 10 assists, four rebounds, two steals and 0.5 blocks.
Also during the playoffs, Wall became only the eighth player in NBA historyto average at least 25 points and 10 assists, according to statistics from Basketball-Reference.com. Other players on that list include Hall of Fame point guards Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Isiah Thomas and Oscar Robertson.
Wall joined the Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry and the Houston Rockets James Harden as the three stars to sign the so-called supermax extension.

Your Prescription Drugs May Stay Effective Well Beyond the Expiration Date – Lifehacker
Posted: at 8:09 am
You have a splitting headache, but the only medicine you have expired six months ago. Should you take it or toss it out? The jurys still out, but a recent ProPublica investigation found that most medicines still work beyond their marked expiration dates, though it stopped short of recommending that consumers go ahead and take expired drugs. A few drugs they tested did actually expire, but most expired 5.5 years past the listed datesome even worked up to 20 years after the date.
Expiration dates dont strictly mean a products expiration, but rather, are the date at which the FDA and drug companies guarantee the drugs effectivenessthere havent been any cases of people being harmed by taking expired drugs. When determining expiration dates, drug makers test how well drugs degrade under the stress of heat and moisture. The FDA then reviews this data to make sure its accurate, but drug companies dont have to test if drugs work past their expiration dates, which is why a lot of expiration dates are earlier than they should be.
On a larger scale, pharmacies throw away drugs once they reach their expiration dates, even if the drug is rare or expensive. Throwing out drugs that can still technically be used contributes to waste, one of the reasons why health care is so expensive in the U.S.
The FDA has a Shelf Life Extension Program that tests whether certain drugs have expiration dates that could be extended. In 2006, the program extended the shelf life of two-thirds of the medicines they tested, with an average of each drug being extended more than four years past its original expiration date. Extending the expiration dates of drugs has saved billions of dollars for pharmacies and the government, but one concern is that extending expiration dates could reduce profit for drugmakers and cause the prices of drugs to increase.
As for whether you should take the expired aspirin, its not the end of the world if you do. Just dont risk it on drugs that your life depends on, like an Epi-Pen.

Momentum Movement: The Boys from Pest – PoliticalCritique.org
Posted: at 8:09 am
This can already be seen from its utterly meaningless name. It is easy to remember and foreign media dont have to translate it; although in English momentum means something entirely different than in Hungarian [moment Transl.]. But this doesnt matter at all, because its a brand name like Nestl or Pull & Bear. The names of the other young parties, such as Jobbik, Prbeszd, or Egytt [meaning, respectively the better one/the one more to the right; dialogue; and together Transl.] dont mean anything either, but they lack the connotation of being dynamic and a sense of being in the present, so cleverly utilised by the marketing-minded founders of Momentum. At the same time, the term is equally neutral, so the potential voter can imagine and project anything onto it. Momentarily.
There are similar parties in the region: the Romanian USR is a bit to the right of its Hungarian relative, while Polands Razem is well to the left however, in line with the local political culture, they are much more explicit and committed, even though their generational character is also quite strong.
This generational character is not a new element in politics. The Giovine Italia movement was founded in 1831 in Marseille by Giuseppe Marzini, Junges Deutschland, the literary equivalent of the Vormrz, the revolutionary movement that led to the events of 1848, was banned by the Bundestag in 1835. The idea of youth has been associated with the ideas of creative imagination and change ever since German Romanticism the root of which, of course, is the Christian notion of childlike innocence. Youth: a new beginning, starting anew, novelty, progress, change. At the same time, the most famous journal of the Hungarian pre-emptive counterrevolution and the following years of White Terror and state racism between 1913-1944 was also titled New Generation.
The most well-known Hungarian generational party used to be Fidesz.
The most well-known Hungarian generational party used to be Fidesz [Fiatal Demokratk Szvetsge, Alliance of Young Democrats Transl.] which, contrary to popular belief, evoked the strongest feelings of enthusiasm and hope in the wider circle of liberals during the democratic transition. There was even mention of an idea for Fidesz to merge with SzDSz [Alliance of Free Democrats, a now defunct liberal party Transl.]. The idea later disappeared, together with Hungarian liberalism entirely.
But the political tenderness towards youth has never weakened. Its a deep and solid European tradition and not only a political one at that: its a basic form of hope and trust in the future. In European metaphorology, a rejuvenated, renewed world equals a better, happier world. From theology to advertisement, its use is ubiquitous and universally applicable.
MoMo is using it too but more smartly than others: although they are a party (which is usually a hindrance, considering that Hungarian public opinion is consistently averse to pluralism and ideologies), they unite the reactionary clich of neither left, nor right with the symbolic signifiers of novelty and youth, whilst simultaneously seem to be rising above the old conflicts and infamous divisions. At the same time, they connect this with the clich of hypermodernity and the twenty-first century.
Yet they enable an instant identification of an anti-Orbn oppositional public opinion, which is tired of struggling in vain, especially the students mobilized in the wake of CEUs and the NGOs harassment and the middle-class youth of the capital. (But even in these cases, MoMo doesnt make a clear or open statement very wisely).
Momentums most important characteristic is that they take no position in conflicts.
Momentums most important characteristic is that they take no position in class conflicts, ethnic conflicts, or gender conflicts. They are compassionate to both the poor and the rich by subtly referring to the conservative idea of national unity and its faint rhetorical copy: the all-time response of the all-time ruling classes to the challenge of egalitarian movements.
Hurting no one, helping no one. Optimising the congruence or synergy or whatever of potential donations they receive. They are attacking the Fidesz government as being outmoded and obsolete, twentieth century, and the ageing opposition as not being national enough (which is not true, but never mind), while formulating their own positive national consciousness in a way which rejects all historical forms of Hungarian nationalism, and naming a coyly neutralized multiculturalism as a healthy national consciousness.
Relativisation and neutralization can also preserve Momentums two greatest victories. The first being the genius overthrowing of the Olympic project, which was immediately neutralized and made acceptable to the spectator-sports-mania the main collective ethical ideology of late capitalism by only saying that the Olympics would be too expensive (which is true), thereby avoiding conflict once again.
A Hungarian Grassroots Organization, The Momentum Movement, Triumphs in Victory
The second, their Mayday mass demonstrations huge success, was also indebted to the implicit appropriation of the dates progressive spirit, all the while saying nothing about workers on 1 May. In his brilliantly conceptualized and delivered speech received with exultation and cheers, chairman Andrs Fekete-Gyr did no more than synthesise the clichs and epithets of left-liberal rhetoric, by simply but successfully reversing Orbns.
Fekete-Gyr ignored all the problematics of late capitalism as well as the structural elements and local particularities of the Hungarian semi-dictatorship and its civilisational, economic, social, and cultural deterioration. Instead, he positioned only external factors at the centre of his rhetoric, equating the Hungarian right with Russia and Putin, while naming Europe as the correct position. Thus, he cleverly replaced the traditionally Hungarian anti-Western nationalism with a pro-Western liberal nationalism, whilst giving it all a progressive-contemporary frame. This, nevertheless, still retains the neutralised reminiscences of the anti-Sovietism and anticommunism of the Communist regimes conservatives.
But beyond these reminiscences, Fekete-Gyr surpasses liberal nationalism, since he is, after all, much more modern than that: what hes doing is called, to quote Edward Saids notorious book (Orientalism, 1978), orientalism. Since 1848, in Hungary and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the east has not so much meant the colonialised and Muslim, but rather the Greek-Orthodox east. The entire Hungarian journalistic tradition including the political writing of 1945-1989 has equated backwardness with Orthodox Eastern Europe: the Balkans, Byzantium, phanariotes, and so forth.
However, since 1848, in Hungary this has mainly translated as anti-Romanianism and anti-Sebianism (anti-Russianism has always been weak here).Little Entente is one of the worst insults and the Danube Confederation is considered to be treason, while pro-Germanism isnt: Merkel is disliked in Hungary not because of the hegemony of German capital, but because of her pro-refugee policies. (N.B, in Hungary theres no particular hostility towards our former oppressors or occupants, such as the Turks, Austrians, Germans or Russians but rather it is directed towards those whom our own ruling class and state have oppressed and discriminated against the Romanians, Serbs, Slovaks, Gypsies, Jews: all the more so.)
By deploying liberal anti-Putinism it is possible to lend Europeanness a nationalist tint.
And now, by deploying this liberal anti-Putinism (and there is no doubt that the Putinist autocracy is terrible but terrible first of all for the Russian people, regardless what kind of schemes Putin sets up to cause trouble abroad), it is possible to lend Europeanness a nationalist tint which makes it acceptable even in the eyes of those for whom Europe is too liberal, too social, too feminist, and not racist enough. (Although the readers of this publication know all too well just how racist and chauvinist it really is.)
Furthermore, it fits into the spirit of the Fidesz-KDNP-influenced public opinion, according to which all ills come from abroad (case in point here are the law targeting NGOs and the Soros-myth), which is radicalised by saying that, in fact, Fidesz-KDNP also comes from abroad, in so far as they represent the interests of Putin and the Russian state, in unelaborate and untested ways.
The rule of the market in East-Central Europe is absolute [Interview]
But this is also only a tool. Articulating ideologies along cultural-geographical lines exempts Momentum from taking a genuine political stance. However strongly Orbn is affiliating himself with the eastern autocrats (Putin, Erdoan, Duterte, Aliev, etc.), the contemporary anti-freedom, racist far-right is not an eastern phenomenon and its effects are pushing the leaders of the western establishment to the right, as has been seen in Austria, the Netherlands, and even Germany but, on the contrary, very European; not to forget to mention Trump. By utilising orientalism, MoMo can say that the poor and uncool Russia is lame and therefore, from the iPhone-generations point of view, we cant follow in their direction, but we have to catch up with Brussels whatever that means.
What is this, if not the reincarnation of moderate nationalism?
What is this, if not the reincarnation of moderate nationalism, which is merely replacing racism with culturalism? Already during the late years of Communism, the anti-nationalists who were fighting the classically anti-western late-Bolshevik nationalism with contemporary Marxist tools, switched to a pro-western liberal nationalism. (And, as opposed to what Momentum maintains, the official Hungarian left has always been national meaning nationalist.) The seminal document here is the work of Jen Szcss The Three Historical Regions of Europe (1983), which is the root of liberal nationalism developing not out of the democratic opposition, but out of the establishment, with the mediation of orientalism and orientalising historiography. This predominantly the ideology of the contemporary Hungarian liberal intellectual sphere, as opposed to the Danubian patriotism, Eastern-European-consciousness, or the anti-capitalism of the former communist, socially democratic peoples left.
The tedious, unproductive, and false opposition of East and West, which has been poisoning the Hungarian intelligentsia at least since the Reform Era of the 19th century, has been resurrected, in its emptiest, most misleading form to date. I can attest to its success. The Orbnite propaganda posters saying, We have to stop Brussels! have been replaced in hundreds of places in the Budapest metro with ones now saying, We have to stop Moscow! It would be impossible to sink the intellectual level of Hungarian politics even further.
Of course, Putin isnt the cause of Hungarys terrible crisis, however characteristic it is of the Hungarian government to sympathise and cooperate with him. Momentum saves us the efforts we would need to exert to understand our backwardness, and, in accordance with the general tone of Hungarian reactionism , it summarises the national problems under the label of the damned foreign influence. It doesnt matter whether this means Brussels, Moscow or the New YorkTel Aviv axis, the dialectic unification of modernity and xenophobia has been accomplished. As if denouncing Russian poverty and backwardness would claim that poverty and backwardness are political programs. But even Orbn cant be accused of this. He wants autocracy, tyranny, servitude and development simultaneously. You cant even say this is impossible. The example of Southeast Asia (Singapore, Taiwan, China, South Korea, and to an extent Japan) illustrates the possibility of repression and economic development under late capitalism. This should be surprising only for those naive losers, who, for whatever reason, thought that capitalism and democracy are somehow connected. As if fascism had never happened. As if colonialism and the synonymic racial genocide had never happened.
Momentum dont push for change, but advocate a cautious adaption to the appealing western standard.
The rhetoric of reaction according to which any change will harm the situation, or is pointless, or dangerous is a part of modernity, and has been the same since at least 1945. Because of the issues unpopularity, Momentum (and anyone aspiring for political success) cant say that they want to restore the state of transitional rule of law, which preceded Orbns constitutional coup dtat (naturally, in a cleaned-up, corrected version), and for this reason they only mobilise public opinion against the authoritarian-repressive excesses. They dont push for change, but (cautiously) advocate restoration and adaption to the appealing western, European standard. This is also the point of the similarly reactionist rhetoric of neither right nor left. When Andrs Fekete-Gyr says to the Neue Zrcher Zeitung that he supports both gay marriage and border control (meaning the border fence erected by Orbn to keep the refugees out), he positions his party within the complex status quo but with a new, streamlined hipster patriot foundation. At the same time this evokes the typically stupid reaction of the widely despised KDNP [Fideszs Christian democrat partner party in government Transl.], which strengthens Momentums position even more. At the same time, with mild anti-migration sentiments, they attract the casually racist and/but neoliberal young bourgeois voters, who were drawn to Jobbik, but who didnt quite feel comfortable there.
Dont misunderstand me I do not expect Momentum, or similar, fundamentally right-wing parties to deny their true nature. Only that they declare this nature. In other words: that they dont blatantly deceive their nave public.
But of course they wont.
This is precisely their advantage: this dynamic meaninglessness. The reference (once again related to the zeitgeist) to the local, means that their politics will be shaped by asking (in their own national consultation [The author refers to the governments National Consultation, whereby every citizen received a survey with loaded questions per mail Transl.]) the local focus groups what they find interesting, productive, popular, appropriate. Thats apolitical politics. (Which they falsely appropriate to the old democratic opposition: the defining tendency there was not the apoliticism of Havel and Konrd, but the pro-human rights, social, democratic, and liberal program of Saharov, Orlov, and KOR, the Polish Workers Defense Committee.) Extending the scope of law or preserving privileges? Pluralism or autocracy? Rule of law or developmental dictatorship? Equality before the law or racism and sexism? These are serious dilemmas even within civic politics, and many of us have already moved on from civic democracy and liberalism but, obviously, we will not make unrealistic demands to such bourgeois parties as Momentum. Obviously, if asked, Momentum would respond with progressive clichs in order to win left-wing voters, even though silence would be the wisest response.
Goodbye, Internationalism! On the Anti-Multicultural Left in East-Central Europe
It is tragic that more and more people, including to us congenial individuals and groups, will support and see this contentless nihil as a way out from the severe crisis that Viktor Orbns clique has pushed Hungary into. Momentum is not a remedy for this crisis, but one of its symptoms.
They will thrive precisely because of this.
It is undeniable that there is plenty of talent, willingness, and dynamic individuals within Momentum. They are attracting the hope of the hopeless. Its quite certain that by being honest and conscientious they would lose a lot of votes. Their tactics are excellent. Their rhetoric and style are chosen superbly. With a bit of luck they can determine the course of the next general election.
They will be successful. They are successful.
They want to discuss everything under the sun, except for their own values or goals.
I have no doubt that the founders of Momentum united selflessly, enthusiastically, with a willingness to make sacrifices, and with worthy intentions several of them left behind lucrative jobs abroad in order to help our poor old country, having had enough of the helpless and subpar parliamentary opposition. Undoubtedly, they are disgusted by the provincial, narrow-minded brutality, decadent depravity, irresponsibility, and authoritarianism of the Orbn regime. From the point of view of conventional morality, Momentum is at least for now spotless, and it is likely they will remain so. At the same time, by concealing their goals and hiding their basic principles (if there are any, which is uncertain) they radically contradict the contemporary democratic consensus; not with conspiratorial intentions but to secure votes and popularity. They want to discuss everything under the sun, except for their own values or goals (these terms are theoretically problematic, misleading, and unclear but at least they are understandable in their soft elasticity; so I use them in inverted commas). They want to gather these from the people and to begin with localized approaches to local issues. I detest the term populist, which is used for everything it does not fit (such as Orbn, who is the stark opposite of a populist). However, this is populist strategy in the classic meaning of the term. And, as always, its the struggle between volont de tous and volont gnrale (the will of all and the general will Rousseau).
However, perhaps, the volont de tous ought to be read as hidden agenda. And perhaps this agenda isnt hidden, but non-existent. The neutrality of the employed middle class, euphemistically called the intelligentsia and bourgeoisie (entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, spies, teachers, police officers, engineers, lawyers, marketing- and advertising-experts, entertainment and media-industry workers, academics, NGO-bureaucrats, etc, etc.) is the victim within the context of class conflicts of the attraction of governmentalitys (Foucault) certain formations. In the logic of media and communications this appears as the free and cool youth, who are beautiful, attractive, future-oriented: the Pest boys.
Ever since the Enlightenment, similarly to youth and novelty, West has been a synonym of progress and change in the underdeveloped East. But this symbol is more and more hollow which is not MoMos fault. The novelty is not new: it is 250 years old.
Indeed, there is a way out of Hungarys deep crisis. A way out into nothing.

Pick N Pay workers interrupt operations – ZNBC
Posted: at 8:06 am
Operations at Pick N Pay Kafubu mall in Kitwe were today briefly interrupted.
This was after over fifty unionized workers downed tools demanding improved salaries and other working conditions.
The workers employed by the South African retail outlet are demanding for a marginal pay rise adding that the current collective agreement they signed with management expired last year.
The workers have accused their employer of paying them slavery wages.
They assert that their salaries are far below the minimum wage.
Management at the Kitwe outlet has refused to give their side of the story to Znbc News and have instead elected to remain mute over the matter.
And Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu has told Znbc News that his office has received the complaint raised by Pick and Pay employees.
Mr. Mpundu said he will soon meet management of Pick N Pay in Kitwe to discuss grievances raised by unionized workers.
He said Government appreciates all foreign direct investment coming into Zambia but that such investment should fully benefit the locals.

Lana Del Rey’s ‘Lust For Life’: A Track-by-Track Breakdown – PopCrush
Posted: at 8:04 am
Interscope Records
After months of speculation, some leaks and a steady stream of singles trickling out from the top of the Hollywood Sign, Lana Del Reys Lust For Life dropped on Friday morning (Jul. 21).
The albums tone was set from very first single Love, a hopeful departure from Del Reys usually dark, melancholic fare. The sprawling sixteen song record, her longest to date, is as much a beacon of light as it is a politically-charged reminder of where America is now.
Outside of the shift in themes perhaps notably the outright feminist God Bless America And All the Beautiful Women In it, in which she uses the Statue of Liberty to represent the women left standing amidst the chaos Lana Del Reys fifth release is exciting because of the involvement of other musicians.
From two A$AP Rocky collaborations to appearances by Sean Ono Lennon and Stevie Nicks, LDR proves herself to be a gateway between classic rock and hip-hop; a unique artist capable of keeping one foot in past influences with the other firmly planted in the future.
Regardless of what you think of Lana Del Rey, this exactly the kind of hopeful, poignantly political pop record that we need right now. Lanas lost absolutely none of her edge, but maintains a beautiful outlook on the future. Even as she watches Trumps America unfold from the top of the Hollywood Sign, the girl who was born to die has found her lust for life, and we couldnt be happier for her.
Scroll further down for a track-by-track breakdown of Lust For Life.
Love
The opening track, performed for the first time at this years SXSW at a surprise showcase, also ushered Lana into a new era of sound. Love, taking place against a sparse drum beat and floaty string production, is perhaps the happiest we have ever seen (or heard) the singer. From the somber reflections of heartbreak that put her on the map, shes evolved with this hopeful, minimalistic ode to everyone whos ever been young and in love.
Lust for Life (feat. The Weeknd)
The title track also boasts the albums first feature, with none other than frequent collaborator The Weeknd. The sumptuous, unapologetically poppy track sees both of these gloomy heartbreakers brooding to, and about, each other, but in the hopeful tone of lovers with a future. They sing They say only the good die young / That just aint right / Cause were having too much fun and the lustfor life and otherwiseis palpable. Starboy and Stargirl are reunited at the top of the Hollywood Sign, and the world couldnt be better.
13 Beaches
Del Rey had to give us a touch of somber wandering; it wouldnt be a Lana Del Rey record otherwise. It hurts to love you / But I still love you / Its just the way I feel, she bemoans as she wanders thirteen beaches to find the one where she can be alone. Its a song that speaks to the lonely, star-filled poet that she remains at heart. Lanas learned to smile through the tears, but that doesnt mean shes not still quietly shedding a few.
Cherry
A sensual, sensory experience, LDR conjures cherries, wine, rosemary and thyme amid a sexy downbeat. The slow-burning track is pure, diluted midsummer, and as delicious to listen to as the bodily pleasures that inspired that inspired the song. Would we expect anything less from the self-proclaimed Queen of Coney Island?
White Mustang
Not to be confused with White Ferrari (Im fully kidding; Frank Ocean fans, do not come for me), Del Rey takes a top-down ride in a lovers white mustang. Ever since we saw her hold her own against lumbering motorcycle gangs on ride and driving down a long highway in the video for Burning Desire, weve been waiting another road-trip ready bop. Melancholic motor junkies, rejoice.
Summer Bummer (feat. A$AP Rocky & Playboi Carti)
Turning up the star power by two for A$APs first appearance on the album, Lana plays with the trap beats she began to favor in Honeymoon, and what better pair to traipse this world alongside her than her hip-hop JFK and Cash Carti? She trades verses about lovers not being bummers while Carti and Rocky shower her with, um, compliments: Her sophistication makes you want to quit the bitch youre dating. Cant argue with that logic (or with the delectable beat).
Groupie Love (A$AP Rocky)
A more soulful turn than Summer Bummer, this Rocky duet contemplates the life of a groupie as she has to share her man with the rest of the world. Every time you look up / I know what youre thinking of / You want my groupie love, she swoons. You can perfectly imagine the scene from the National Anthem video where Rocky blows her a kiss and she holds it to her heart.
In My Feelings
What sounds like another doleful ballad turns out to be a bait-and-switch. In My Feelings sees Lana Del Rey at her most independent, as she tosses aside an old lover, devouring the word looooser with a relish befitting of everything shes achieved. She sings about laughing as she takes no prisoners, takes down names, makes good love and makes good money, too. Somebodys obviously been watching Lemonade.
Coachella Woodstock In My Mind
Although some of you might roll your eyes (or, for the purists, openly gasp) at the comparison of Woodstock to Coachella, Del Rey makes a point here about the power and atmosphere of music festivals, and the kind of communities we should all enjoy. When you think about the fact that this song was written amid the backdrop of impending nuclear threat, it becomes an uplifting beacon of hope, a snapshot of joy in the middle of trying times.
God Bless America And All the Beautiful Women In It
Lana Del Rey hasnt played with acoustic guitar sounds since covering Leonard Cohens Chelsea Hotel No. 2, and the opening eventually builds into the electronic orchestra that usually bolsters her work. This song is notable for using the imagery of the Statue of Liberty to empower American women. Listen closely, and theres criticism amidst the empowerment: two gun shots sound every time she sings God bless America.
When the World Was at War We Kept Dancing
Another anthem for the young, Lana Del Rey contemplates the end of America as she surveys the damage, and encourages everyone suffering to keep on dancing. She maintains, in the most political of reality checks, the message of hope that bolsters the entire record: Its only the beginning / if we hold on to hope / Well have a happy ending.
Beautiful People Beautiful Problems (feat. Stevie Nicks) The track that every single music blog has been salivating over since the announcement of these two witchy women teaming up does not disappoint. An ethereal anthem to troubled love by the two women in the world most familiar with the topic, Beautiful People features Stevie Nicks immediately distinguishable voice at its best, playing with Del Reys soft whispers and raising them to new emotional heights.
Tomorrow Never Came (feat. Sean Ono Lennon)
With a refrain that makes a gentle nod to Bob Dylans Lay Lady Lay and Elton Johns Tiny Dancer, Lana Del Rey and Sean Ono Lennon are steeped in classic rock as interpreted by the new generation of musicians. These two show off their musical chops and their deep emotional ties to an era of American music so many think is dead. I adored you / And I just wanted things to be the same, they sing to each other amid soft guitar and Beatles-esque production that would bring the most stone-hearted doubters to tears.
Heroin
A tender song about death in an album full of life, Del Rey pays tribute to the drug thats taken so many of her icons. Its impossible to not think of Lou Reed and The Velvet Undergrounds song of the same name as the track builds to an intensity, to Del Rey writing on the walls in blood and st.
Change
Lana Del Rey hasnt sang over a piano barebones like this since Old Money, a heartbreaking track from Ultraviolence that samples the love theme from Franco Zafirellis Romeo and Juliet. This song, doubling as both personal empowerment and a blanket statement about keeping hope alive during times of great turmoil, is by far her most powerful and heartbreaking as she attempts to be honest, capable, and beautiful in the face of instability.
Get Free
The final track, building into a Beach Boys-like melody, is a song of intense relief after so much contemplation and turmoil. Equal parts calm and danceable, this is the perfect ending to an album so full of deep philosophical thought. She revisits the theme of having a war on her mind, subverting it by finally living her own life away from somebody elses game. Its this independence that gives Del Rey her lust for life, and makes this the perfect closer to an album full of contemplations of intense growth.

Girls Trip goes too far, far too often: review – Toronto Star

Starring Regina Hall, Queen Latifah. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee. Opens Friday in GTA theatres. 122 minutes. 18A
There is a positive and life-affirming message about sisterhood and personal empowerment in Girls Trip.
But you have to wade through an awful lot of clutter to get there. Or perhaps dross would be a more accurate description.
The film is audacious and unabashed in its determination to draw laughs from material that takes vulgarity to the extreme. Some of it works while a lot of it is just head-shakingly awful.
The plot is straightforward: four women, best pals since college 25 years earlier, reunite for the first time in quite a while to party hardy at the annual Essence Music Festival can you say product placement? in the Big Easy.
Ryan (Regina Hall) is a successful self-help author and guest speaker at the event, hoping to land a merchandising deal with a mega-retailer (if only she can overlook the activities of her cheating louse of a husband).
Sasha (Queen Latifah) is a journalist who has sold out, barely scraping a living with a celebrity-gossip blog. Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith) is a glammed-down helicopter mom to two kids while Dina (Tiffany Haddish) is the sassy, libidinous one with major impulse-control issues.
With four credited screenwriters, the too many chefs maxim applies the script is loose and lazy, with more focus on antics and bad language than plot and character development.
Words like bitch, ho and the dreaded N-word flow freely, and how tiresome and anti-feminist it is to hear women repeat the mantra that what all a woman with the blues needs is something big and black.
Two scenes drew horrified peals of laughter from the audience at a recent public screening, one involving golden showers and a second featuring full frontal nudity by a homeless man.
Still, the film is not a total writeoff. Theres some good chemistry among the four principals and a fine performance from Hall as Ryan, a torn woman whose life looks way better on the outside.
And Queen Latifah brings her usual solid screen presence, along with some sweet melancholy, to the role of Sasha.
Theres clearly a ready audience for Girls Trip it certainly tickled funny bones at the advance screening and theres a resolution that is genuinely warm and redemptive.
But a comedy thats so determined to shock the laughs out of you isnt going to be everyones idea of a fun trip to the movies.

Girls on the Run of the North State set to offer empowerment program at more than 35 schools – Gridley Herald
Posted: at 8:04 am
Girls on the Run of the North States registration for the fallseason is now open. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that inspires girls in 3rd through 8th grade to be joyful, healthy and confident. The volunteer-led program brings together groups of 8-15 girls for a ten-week program that encourages personal development, team building and connection to the community.
We start by helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and whats important to them. We then look at the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships. And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world - we are nurturing the 'whole' girl. Claire Johnson, executive director.
"Girls on the run taught me never to give up. I made lots of friends and I met a lot of very nice coaches throughout the season. The coaches built up my confidence by teaching me how to be strong and believe in myself. Girls on the run taught me to collaborate with other girls. The 5K seemed very hard but once I was finished I felt like I could do anything. Now I'm not afraid to try new things. I love GOTR." ~Evelyn, age 8
This fall, Girls on the Run programs will be offered at over 35 locations throughout Butte and Glenn counties. Each team will meet two times a week for 75-90 minutes after school and participate in research-based lessons that use dynamic discussions and fun running games to teach life skills and build confidence. The season will culminate in a 5k event that brings together family, friends and community members to celebrate the girls growth throughout the season.
Our fall season will begin the week of September 4, 2017 and run through the week of November 13, 2017. Our Fall GOTR 5K Fun Run will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 9 am at Bidwell Parks One Mile Recreation Area.
