Ron Paul Supporter Elected On Promise To Rebuild The GOP He Helped Destroy – The Liberty Conservative

Posted: July 25, 2017 at 11:43 am

While the Ron Paul revolution may appear to have waned in recent years, its legacy remains apparent in todays Trump-dominated Republican Party. A recent example from Clark County, Nevada shows that the Paul revolution still has some life in it, as a full-throated Ron Paul supporter was just elected their GOP chairman.

Carl Bunce, a long-time libertarian activist, narrowly defeated his establishment opponent, Eddie Facey, by a four-vote margin last week. Despite a long history as a rabble-rouser from his start as a fierce Ron Paul supporting partisan, Bunce was able to smooth over rifts in the party. Current state party chairman Michael McDonald held a major fundraiser along with other prominent Nevada Republicans including National Committeewoman Diana Orrock, State Senator Scott Hammond, and Councilwoman Michele Fiore in support of Bunces candidacy.

I know how to rebuild the party because I helped destroy it, the new Clark County GOP chair said to fellow party members.

Bunce served as the head of the entire Ron Paul campaign in Nevada in 2008 and 2012. Last year, he served as Nevadas Senior Advisor to Rand Pauls presidential campaign during his ill-fated Presidential run. His victory shows how the Paul ideas are still being mainstreamed, and are no longer looked at as anathema in the age of Trump.

Of course, keeping his power will be no small task for Bunce. Ron Paul-inspired insurgencies have had success gaining power at different levels of the GOP, but hanging onto it is a totally different story. The establishment always strikes back, and they are just a few votes away from turning the tide yet again in Clark County.

Bunce will need to remain vigilant once in power to keep a unified bloc of voters behind him. It will not be easy. Nevertheless, he will not be afraid to use his power to hold elected officials accountable, and hopes that the public will respond to his brand of decisive, take-no-prisoners leadership.

Elected officials go off the range because they dont fear the Republican Party in Clark County, or any other county, he said. What they need to begin to do is fear us.

Horrific episode of human smuggling fuels both sides of immigration debate – Washington Post

Posted: at 11:41 am

The discovery of dozens of migrants in a dangerously overheated trailer in San Antonio this weekend has further inflamed the national debate over illegal immigration, particularly sanctuary cities that limit cooperation with federal authorities.

In a Facebook post late Sunday, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) appeared to blame the tragedy on sanctuary policies like those adopted by San Antonio, San Francisco, Chicago and other jurisdictions, which he said entice people to illegally cross the border by creating the impression that local authorities will shield them from deportation.

He praised a Texas law currently under court challenge that would impose harsh penalties on jurisdictions that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

Immigrant rights groups, in contrast, pointed the finger at increasingly harsh U.S. tactics toward undocumented immigrants, which they said drive would-be migrants to turn to unsafe methods to enter the United States.

They cited the Texas law, which will take effect Sept. 1 unless the lawsuit against it is successful, as an example of that worsening treatment.

Authorities say the tractor-trailer found in the parking lot of a San Antonio Walmart on Sunday was used to illegally transport more than 100 immigrants from Mexico as part of a smuggling operation.

There was little ventilation and no cooling in the cargo bay, creating punishing conditions as temperatures soared into the triple digits. Ten of the trucks occupants have died, and dozens of others remain hospitalized, some in critical condition.

The incident comes at a time of stepped-up immigration enforcement by the Trump administration, which has made it a priority to deport those in the country illegally and pledged to dramatically increase border security.

In Texas, tensions also are rising over the anti-sanctuary-city law known as S.B. 4. The measure requires local authorities to hold and turn over undocumented immigrants who have been ordered detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It carries harsh penalties, including fines and even jail time, for officials who refuse to comply.

Several cities and counties, including San Antonio, have sued to block the measure, arguing that it violates the U.S. Constitution. Critics of the law say cooperating closely with federal immigration authorities erodes public trust and often forces them to keep people in jail beyond their sentences.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) suggested Sunday on Twitter that better border security would have forestalled this weekends human-smuggling episode.

Compassion is called for, he wrote. But lawlessness ensures cartels will continue to profit from these tragedies. Status quo is not compassionate.

In his Facebook statement, Patrick wrote, Sanctuary cities entice people to believe they can come to America and Texas and live outside the law. Sanctuary cities also enable human smugglers and cartels. Today, these people paid a terrible price and demonstrate why we need a secure border and legal immigration reform so we can control who enters our country.

The posting which was shared more than 1,500 times drew immediate rebukes from immigrant rights advocates, who argued that the anti-sanctuary-cities law would make such tragedies more common.

We think that it is policies like S.B. 4 and the growing criminalization of immigrants and the growing militarization of our border that ... pushes people into shadows, sometimes literally to the back of the truck to hide from authorities, said Amy Fischer, policy director for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services.

In 2003, 19 people died in the trailer of an 18-wheeler during a 120-mile journey across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Two weeks ago, Houston police discovered 12 immigrants who had been locked in a sweltering box truck for hours and were seeking help by banging on the walls. And in May, border agents discovered 18 immigrants locked in a refrigerated produce truck, the temperature set at 51 degrees.

At a vigil for the victims Sunday night, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.), said U.S. lawmakers should bear some of the blame for this and other smuggling disasters.

This represents a symptom of a broken immigration system that Congress, of which I am a part, has had the chance to fix but has not, Castro said. Thats a colossal failure that has a human cost.

Rey Saldaa, the San Antonio City Council member who represents the area where the truck was discovered, said it would be a mistake to conclude that people are drawn to the United States because of sanctuary policies. He said they come because of larger and more complex desires for a better life pressures that have existed for decades.

I would lay a lot of this on people who have ignored a system that has incentivized this one kind of entry, Saldaa said. And so people turn to the danger of human smugglers.

Post-Brexit trade deals ‘threaten UK’s animal welfare standards’ – The Guardian

Overwhelming support in the UK for high animal welfare standards is under threat from Brexit, an influential parliamentary committee has said.

The report from the House of Lords warns the standards of UK producers could be put under pressure by demands from other countries to allow an influx of cheap and lower-standard food as part of trade deals.

It was published as the prime ministers spokesperson said that allowing imports of US products such as chicken meat washed with chlorine would not be ruled out in trade deals. This came from No 10, despite assurances to the Guardian last week from the Department of Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) that any trade deal would maintain or raise food standards.

Preserving food standards would be of the highest priority Defra told the Guardian, and trade deals in agriculture would not be a race to the bottom.

Livestock welfare and crop-growing standards in the UK are among the worlds highest, but that could be subject to sudden change if farmers are challenged by imports from countries that produce meat and other food with much lower standards. Without firm and explicit support for agricultural standards in any post-Brexit trade agreements, the UKs high standards would be at risk.

The governments wish for the UK to become a global leader in free trade is not necessarily compatible with its desire to maintain high animal welfare standards

The House of Lords subcommittee on EU Energy and Environment found that if imports from other countries were allowed without the current EU safeguards, then the standards of UK producers would come under pressure.

The governments wish for the UK to become a global leader in free trade is not necessarily compatible with its desire to maintain high animal welfare standards, the committee found.

Liam Fox, one of the ministers leading the governments Brexit strategy, is in the US for talks on a new trade agreement that is almost certain to include agricultural products, including meat and genetically modified vegetables.

At present, the UK is protected from controversial US-produced agricultural goods, by EU standards that deter imports of products such as meat that has been washed in chlorine, which has a high bacterial content related to low animal welfare standards. EU rules also barmeat that has been fed with hormones and growth-promoting antibiotics.

Such products are allowed for sale in the US and attempts by the UK to impose higher standards on any imports would be a difficult part of trade deal negotiations.

Lord Teverson, chairman of the sub-committee that wrote the House of Lords report, said Brexit would threaten the UKs high standards of food for human consumption.

We heard overwhelming support for farm animal welfare standards to be maintained or improved. We urge the government to secure the inclusion of high farm animal welfare standards in any free trade agreements it negotiates after Brexit.

But he warned: The government will need to consider the effect of increasing standards on the competitiveness of UK producers as well as the future trading relationship with the EU.

The committee said that while consumers are currently protected by the high welfare standards required by the EU, which are much more stringent than those in countries such as the US and China, most people buying food are unaware of this.

Food labelling standards may also confuse consumers, the committee said, as they do not make it clear where and to what standards meat and vegetables have been produced.

Keith Taylor, an MEP and spokesman for the Green party, said: Fox is promising to discard the vital precautionary principle that guides EU policy-making and protects citizens from any process, procedure or product that carries with it a plausible risk of harm.

He pointed to the example of pesticides, dozens of which are permitted in the US but banned in the EU on health and environmental grounds.

In the US,antibiotics are routinely used to improve animals growth, sparking fears that meat consumption could increase human resistance to antibiotics. They are also used to limit diseases that could otherwise spread in the megafarms, holding tens of thousands of animals, that are commonplace in US farming.

We have reached the point where fitness tracking is ubiquitous in our society. For a relatively low price, its easy to find a wearable device that does basic tracking of how many steps you take, what your heart rate is, what your sleep patterns are, and so on. Such technology has become baseline in wearables. And if youre just looking for help counting your steps, or some inspiration to put more effort into getting a goodnights sleep, the products on the market are just fine they do the trick.

But with only one piece of equipment used to gather data, youre not getting a full picture or really advanced reading of your bodys movements and metrics. To this end, unfortunately, wearing a popular fitness tracker is nothing like going to the doctor and getting a checkup.

Most trackers fall short for this reason: While the consumer industry leaders like Fitbit, Nike Fuel Band, and Misfit have enough technology to document steps and pulses, they dont have the ability to put together the bigger picture of their users health. Essentially, theyre not dynamic enough to be clinical-quality. And when youre looking to track your vitals, why settle for anything short of what a doctor might use?

Thats where Biostrap comes in. They assert that their aim is to change the industry standard, and to this end, they have created a device with biometrics so advanced that physicians actually use the same tech to monitor their patients physical health. So you can count on an accurate and dependable recording, and wearing a Biostrapfeels like youre going to the doctor.

Investing in a Biostrap is taking a fast-track road to getting into shape. While its a bit more expensive than the other trackers on the market, priced at $249, its a serious device thats perfect for people who want to get (or already are) serious about their health.

The Biostrap is a platform of two different devices that work in tandem to capture all of your bodys efforts. Together, the wristband and shoe clip create a precise picture of your every move. To break down the specifics, the Biostrap extracts more than 29 parameters to offer reliable accounts of users Heart Rate Variability, Oxygen Saturation, Respiratory Rate, and more. And because exercise is more than just steps taken in a day its programmed to recognize over 20 different kinds of physical activities. From squats, to strides on the elliptical, to butterfly strokes in the poolthe Biostrap is counting every physical activity its users engage in.

And if it doesnt recognize what theyre doing, they can teach it to. After recording a few reps of the movement, the Biostrap will remember it for the future. Youll never again have to wonder: if you work out and no one else is at the gym, have you even worked out at all? If youre wearing a Biostrap, its always watching. Want one? Scientists Assert That A Child has Officially Been Virtually Cured of HIV – Futurism

Posted: at 11:40 am

In Brief A nine-year-old child from South Africa has reportedly been "virtually cured" of HIV, as signs and symptoms of the dreaded infection hasn't been seen since the child received treatment shortly after being born in 2007. But how was this child cured? Nine Years and Counting

At the on-going Paris conference of the International AIDS Society (IAS), a team of scientists is presenting details of a remarkable development that could improve HIV treatment. The case is that of a nine-year-old South African child who was infected with HIV at birth. After receiving a burst of treatment soon after being born, the child has since been free of any symptoms or activesigns of the menacing virus without any further treatment.

HIV, which is known to affect more than36.7 million people worldwide, is one of the deadliest viruses around today since it was discovered, its taken the lives of more than 35 million victims, according to the World Health Organization. This South African case, however, is a glimmer of hope.

[T]his new case strengthens our hope that by treating HIV-infected children for a brief period beginning in infancy, we may be able to spare them the burden of lifelong therapy and the health consequences of long-term immune activation typically associated with HIV disease, Anthony Fauci, directorNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), told The Guardian.

While the doctors report detectingtiny fraction of immune cells that still have the virus integrated into them, the childs immune system remains healthy, and there is no sign of HIV infection.

The South African child was part of a NIAID-funded trial in 2007for treating infants with HIV. Scientists and doctors, however, haveyet to understand why and how the 40-week treatment (which was also given to 142 other children) worked for this child, whose identity remains anonymous.

We dont believe that antiretroviral therapy alone can lead to remission, Avy Violari, pediatric research head at the Perinal HIV Research Unit in Johannesburg, told the BBC. We dont really know whats the reason why this child has achieved remission we believe its either genetic or immune system-related.

Still, the mere fact that something like this is possible is a cause for hope. Unlike other cases where supposedly cured infants later on demonstrated latent HIV in the immune system, this South African case is the third reported virtually cured child. Speaking to The Guardian, Caroline Tiemessen from Johannesburgs National Institute of Communicable Diseases said, By further studying the child, we may expand our understanding of how the immune system controls HIV replication.

Facebook Just Filed a Patent for a Modular Consumer Device – Futurism

Posted: at 11:40 am

In Brief Facebook has filed a patent application for a modular consumer electronic device that could function as a smartphone, GPS, microphone, speaker, and touch display. This device will be similar to the failed Google Project ARA device if it succeeds. Plug-and-Play Smartphones

On Thursday July 20, Facebook published its patent application for a modular electromechanical device that includes a phone, GPS, microphone, speaker, and touch display. This kind of modular consumer hardware would allow users to combine several differentcomponents together on a single device a kind of plug-and-play smartphone.

This sort of modular design is also of interest to Google, who has already made one unsuccessful attemptto bring its Project Ara smartphone to market. Some members of the Project Ara team are now at Facebooks Building 8 including Regina Dugan, the leader of the research lab.Building 8 is Facebookslab for consumer technologies and the epicenter of its futuristic projects.

Several Building 8 employees were named on the patent application. Thefour employees had previously worked for Nascent Objects, a startup that prototyped modular gadgets using 3D printing. Facebook acquired Nascent Objects last year, and a spokesperson confirmed to Tech Insider that the technologies in the patent application were part of that acquisition.

According to the patent application, the device could work as a phone, or it could work more like Amazons Alexa doesin terms of its music speaker function. The application also notes that the components of millions of connected devices could be loaded with various kinds of software as pieces are swapped out.

The modular system also appears to be a move towards more efficient and long-term use of consumer electronics. The application reads, Typically, the hardware components included in the consumer electronics that are considered outdated are still useable. However, the hardware components can no longer be re-used since consumer electronics are designed as closed systems. From a consumer prospective, the life cycle of conventional consumer electronics is expensive and wasteful.

It remains to be seen whether Facebook will succeed where Google failed; just because a patient application is filed, theres no guarantee that a device willactually get made.

The Third-Largest Cryptocurrency, Ripple’s XRP, Up Almost 4000% in Second Quarter – Futurism

Posted: at 11:40 am

In Brief Ripple and its token, XRP, have dominated the crypto currency market during the first half of 2017 as XRP finished the second quarter up 3,977 percent. This is an example of cryptocurrencies booming during an overall digital currency renaissance. Ripple Exploding In Q2

The digital currency market has been dominated by Ripples XRP for the first half of the year. XRP finished itssecond financial quarter up 3,977 percent from the beginning of the year at $0.26. It has now dropped to about $0.19, but this is still an impressive display of growth and strength.

Ripple and XRP are just part of the latest example of cryptocurrencies booming during an overall digital currency renaissance. Right now, various countries are experimenting with cryptocurrencies, acknowledging their role in the future of finance and looking to secure their place in that future. For example, the South African Reserve Bank, the countrys central bank, is trying on Bitcoin regulation for size; China is testing a national cryptocurrency a sensible option in a country that has gone almost totally cashless in urban areas; andEthereum Island may be coming to the African coast as Mauritius moves to take its place as a cryptocurrency and blockchain technology hub.

Meanwhile, despite some rocky days, many experts think that now is the best time to invest in cryptocurrencies whichever platform appeals to you. While some are worried that the cryptocurrency market might be experiencing a bubble, others see this period of rapid growth as a sign of larger changes in the world economy. As countries like China and Japan sway the cryptocurrency market, it becomes clearer that close attention to technological advancement, a desire to achieve cybersecurity, and a need to control ones money are the decisive factors for many cryptocurrency investors.

This makes Ripples focus on international payments seem shrewd, and feel like a strong explanatory factor in XRPs current strong position in the cryptocurrency market.

Disclosure: Several members of the Futurism team, including the editors of this piece, are personal investors in a number of cryptocurrency markets. Their personal investment perspectives have no impact on editorial content.

Source of Weird! Signal From Nearby Star Finally Confirmed – Futurism

Posted: at 11:40 am

In BriefAfter generating a lot of hype over the past weeks, the sourceof the mysterious signal from Ross 128 has finally been confirmed.A second observation concluded that the signal isn't some form ofalien communication, but instead satellite transmissions. Surprise, Surprise!

The detection ofpeculiar radio signalsfrom a dim star roughly 11 light-years away from Earth had the public speculating wildly last week about the possibility that wed finally detected an alien communication.

After looking further into the signals with a little help from theSearch for ExtraTerrestrial Life (SETI) Institute, astronomers at thePlanetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo are ready to confirm the source of the signals from Ross 128, and its not ET.

We are now confident about the source of the Weird! Signal, Abel Mendez, director of the PHL, wrote in a blog post on Friday. The best explanation is that the signals are transmissions from one or more geostationary satellites.

The signal officially named the Weird! Signal was only spotted near Ross 128, one of several red dwarf stars Mendez and his team have been studying, because Ross 128 is close to the celestial equator where many geostationary satellites are placed, Mendez explained.

The PHL also conductedan informal survey of almost 800 participants, including more than 60 astronomers, to find out what people thought was causing the Weird! Signal. Most said it was likely astronomical in nature. This is interesting since in the absence of solid information about the signal, most astronomers would think that [radio interference or instrumental failures] would probably be the most likely explanation, Mendez noted.

Unexplained signals, like the more popular and recently resolved Wow! signal, draw significant attention because many people are hopeful that well find some trace of alien life. Indeed, the unofficial public survey showed that roughly 200 of the 800 participants believed the Weird! Signal was communication from intelligent alien life.

However, as Mendez explained, Unexplained here does not mean inexplicable; it just means we are not able to tell which is the precise source from many possibilities.

Just like the Wow! Signal, the Weird! Signal from Ross 128 demonstrates that theres likely to be some non-alienanswer to many of the mysteries we uncover from the universe.

Of course, this doesnt mean that the search for alien life isnt worth it. Before we can consider any such explanation, however, we need to explore all stellar and astronomical possibilities. Sometimes, these possibilities may take 40 years to be completely explored, as was the case with the Wow! Signal, but such is the nature of scientific inquiry.

This was a great experience of open science, Mendez wrote. Sometimes projects, observational campaigns, or missions do not necessarily reach their objectives. The lesson here is that we all need to continue exploring and sharing results openly. Some people prefer to only learn about the successes, but others prefer science in real-time, no matter the end result.

Rodrigo Duterte: Human rights concerns in the Philippines will not stop deadly war on drugs – The Independent

Posted: July 24, 2017 at 8:42 am

Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to continue his deadly crackdown on drugs, telling users they face either jail or hell.

Responding to growing international criticism of his violent war on illicit drugs, which is understood to have claimed the lives of more than 7,000 people, the Philippine President said he would not be scared by threats of prosecution.

He urged his critics not to trivialise government efforts by demanding human rights be upheld, telling an audience at his annual state of the nation address on Monday: Do not try to scare me with prison or the International Court of Justice.

"I'm willing to go to prison for the rest of my life.

"The fight will be unremitting as it will be unrelenting.

"There is a jungle out there, there are beasts out there preying on the innocent, the helpless."

To applause from his national police chief, Ronald del Rosa, Mr Duterte added: The fight will not stop until those who deal in (drugs) understand that they have to stop because the alternatives are either jail or hell.

Mr Dutertes fierce defence of his drugs policy came as thousands of protesters marched to the House of Representatives to demand he deliver on promises made in his first state of the nation speech last year, from holding peace talks with communist insurgents to improving internet speed.

Activists burn an effigy of Mr Duterte in Quezon City, northeast of Manila, where the speech was taking place (EPA)

Human Rights Watch has accused Mr Duterte of unleashing a human rights calamity in the Philippines.

The extraordinary brutality of the Duterte drug war is undeniable, it said in a statement released last week.

Many of the victims are found in back alleys or street corners wrapped in packing tape, their bodies bullet-ridden or bearing stab wounds and other signs of torture.

The 71-year-old President won approval in Congress at the weekend for an extension of martial law in the south to deal with the siege of Marawi by pro-Isis fighters.

The fight against Islamist militants in one of the countrys biggest southern cities continues two months on, with more than 500 dead.

Separately, Mr Dutertes top ally in Congress has proposed new bills to legalise same-sex marriage and divorce.

Our citizens should not be excluded from society just because of the person they love. They must also be treated with equality before the law," Pantaleon Alvarez said.

The Vatican and the Philippines are the only states in which divorce is outlawed.

In the most recent opinion polls, Filipinos have overwhelmingly rejected same-sex marriages, with the latest survey in 2015 showing nearly 70 per cent of 1,200 respondents strongly disagreed.

Laws on same-sex marriages have been proposed as far back 2006, but none has gained traction.

However, the latest attempt could gain momentum because it has the endorsement of Mr Alvarez, a close ally of Mr Duterte.
