Wall Street stunned over AMD’s blowout results due to cryptocurrency mining demand – CNBC
Posted: July 31, 2017 at 9:53 am
Investors are mesmerized with AMD's impressive second quarter as cryptocurrency mining demand drove the company's financial results above Wall Street's expectations.
The chipmaker reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings and guidance Tuesday. Its shares surged more than 10 percent in after-hours trading following the report and were up more than 9 percent in early regular trading Wednesday.
"AMD turned in a solid beat to our and consensus estimates as the company's new Ryzen desktop CPU ramped into production and GPU demand outstripped supply," Stifel analyst Kevin Cassidy wrote in a note to clients Wednesday. "While management wasn't specific on how much, the GPU revenue upside was driven by cryptocurrency applications."
AMD shares have rallied 102 percent through Tuesday in the previous 12 months compared with the S&P 500's 14 percent return. That performance ranks No. 4 in the entire S&P 500, according to FactSet.
Cryptocurrency miners use graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia to "mine" new coins, which can then be sold or held for future appreciation. AMD traditionally has a better reputation for mining cryptocurrencies.
The ethereum cryptocurrency is up more than 2,400 percent year to date through Wednesday, while bitcoin is up about 160 percent this year, according to data from industry website CoinDesk.
In June, AMD shares jumped after the company told CNBC that the dramatic rise in digital currency prices has driven demand for its graphics cards. At the time, major computer hardware retailers had sold out of AMD's recently launched RX 570 and RX 580 models.
Digital currency mining was the key topic during AMD's earnings conference call with Wall Street on Tuesday evening. Analysts asked company management three times for clarification on the magnitude and sustainability of cryptocurrency mining demand.
One analyst noted the company is working to mitigate future downside risk and is not incorporating continued digital currency mining outperformance in its guidance.
"Crypto mining helped stimulate demand for AMD GPUs in Q2, which we think could translate to a risk should cryptocurrency values decline, AMD is working to manage the crypto risk by targeting supply to the core GPU gaming market, and working with some of its AIB [add in board] partners to offer specific feature sets to segment the market between gaming & mining," Jefferies analyst Mark Lipacis wrote Wednesday. "AMD is not including upside from mining in its outlook."
Lipacis reiterated his buy rating on the company and raised his price target to $19 from $16, representing 35 percent upside from Tuesday's close.
To be sure, some analysts are still skeptical about AMD after its big run.
"We were surprised at the aftermarket reaction for the stock," Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore wrote Wednesday. "We continue to be somewhat cynical on the long-term intrinsic value of the stock, despite being excited about Zen and maintaining numbers that are above the Street. As street numbers start to catch up, absolute valuation levels are going to matter more."
Moore reiterated his equal weight rating and $11 price target for AMD shares.
CNBC's Michael Bloom contributed to this story.

Public Company to Convert Bitcoin to Stock in First-of-Its-Kind Fundraise – CoinDesk
Posted: at 9:52 am
As initial coin offerings (ICOs) start to come under regulatoryscrutiny in the U.S., one Australian venture capital firm isexperimenting with a new way to convert cryptocurrency into regulated corporate shares.
Following a decision to offer a 300,000 Australian dollar ($239,000) convertible bitcoin loan to blockchain payments startup DigitalX, investment firm Blockchain Global Limited has revealed exclusively to CoinDesk that it has completed its due diligence and will close the entire AU$4.35 million investment in bitcoin.
However, what distinguishes the deal from past startup investments using bitcoin is that, following a series of unusual events, DigitalX is now a publicly listed company that trades under the ticker symbol DCC on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).
As such, Blockchain Global CEO Sam Lee believes the completion of the deal will mark a milestone in cryptocurrency history.
He told CoinDesk:
"With our due diligence process satisfied, we look forward to completing the AU$4.35 million transaction entirely in bitcoin, a world's first for a listed public company."
The decision to invest in DigitalX further comes after a due diligence period that initiated in June with a disclosure on the ASX site detailing the terms of the loan. Under the terms,Blockchain Global was given the option to covert the AU$300,000 into shares or receive repayment plus 12 percent interest one year after the drawdown of the loan.
Now that DigitalX has passed the due diligence process, the investor firm has opted to convert the entire bitcoin investment into shares, and has asked that the interest on the initial loan be paid in bitcoin.
"Conducting transactions via bitcoin guarantees that the transfer is near instant," said Lee. "And is transparent to the public in addition to the parties involved."
Since first posting the terms of its convertible bitcoin loan online, DigitalX CEO Leigh Travers told CoinDesk he's been contacted by several "investor relations departments of major blockchain companies" with questions about how they can do the same.
It turns out, it's not actually that difficult. But, to understand how the bitcoin loan was executed, it's important to grasp a bit about DigitalX's unusual background.
Back in March 2014, DigitalX became Australias first listed bitcoin company following the reverse takeover of "dying oil and gas firm" Macro Energy. The cash-rich company acquired DigitalX (then called Digital CC), but gave more shares to the acquiring company than the original shareholders had, resulting in a shift of control.
Then in August 2016, following news that Macro Energy's original founder had been indictedfor fraud, shares in DigitalX plummeted, resulting in the company distancing itself even further from the founder, according to an Australian Financial Review report.
It was after a brief stint as a bitcoin mining operation that the startup pivoted to focus on developing a money-transfer app called Airpocket that usedblockchain technology.
And it's at this point in the startup's story where the unusual capital raise, and bitcoin loan, come into play.
Followingthe reverse acquisition, the company had gone from what Travers described as having "a low number of shares issued and with cash in the bank" to having "a low amount of working capital." But along the way, he said he's never doubted the blockchain market and DigitalX's ability to gain marketshare.
Still, to bridge its funding gap, DigitalX announced in June it had received an agreement to invest from Blockchain Global and other investors, but that the majority of the infusion was subject to due diligence and shareholder approval.
During this period, DigitalX needed cash in a hurry to maintain its operations. So, using Tradeblock's XBX reference rate to determine price, the loan was made, without middlemen, directly from the lender to the borrower.
Corporate advisors Ironside Capital Pty Ltd are helping manage the investment process for a 6 percent fee.
While bitcoin loan platforms such as Nebeus and Bitcoin Lending Club do exist, Travers said the direct method provided a series of additional benefits. This included the ability to complete the transaction on a national holiday, nearly instantly, and because the loan was visible on the bitcoin blockchain, to do so without the need for a receipt.
"Within the hour we were able to register that those funds had been transferred to use and had been cleared," said Travers. "So we were able to move onto the next part of the transaction."
From a lender perspective, Lee said the transaction was equally streamlined. Now that the decision to invest has been made, all that remains to do is to receive shareholder approval.
Lee concluded:
"Conducting transactions via bitcoin guarantees that the transfer is near instant, and is transparent to the public in addition to the parties involved."

Buying Bitcoin: August 1st And Everything After – Seeking Alpha
Posted: at 9:52 am
Weve said previously how important August 1st is in the cryptocurrency world. August 1st is a signaled date in which decisions about Bitcointhe largest and first cryptocurrencywill be made. The repercussions of this go far beyond Bitcoin and will be a sign of things to come. Its also the first date in which the world beyond crypto first adopters will be watching, as new consortiums have joined into the burgeoning industry.
To show just how far thats come, lets look at some current figures. The entirety of cryptocurrency (including crypto assets and protocols) is around $90 million. Bitcoin itself represents half of that. The first huge news Bitcoin garnered was when its coin price hit $1,000which was in September 2013. During 2015 it made more headlines, as it crashed back down to $200. Its made headlines throughout this year as its price has crossed $2,000 and neared $3,000 and most recently has continued to make news as the August 1st deadline approaches.
What happens onand afterAugust 1st is crucial for any investor in Bitcoin.
The first crucial point is on the regulation (not financially, but in terms of stability) of the bitcoin protocol and problem-solving.
This is all born out of identified problems with Bitcoin, from both investors and miners (if youre not within this world, you can think of miners as financial verifiers). Bitcoin was moving too slowly and too expensively, and the future scaling viability looked meek given these. Without a central presence propping up and/or regulating Bitcoin, these issues could go unsolved, plummeting the value for investors and scaring away miners, who earn the currency by doing work to verify transactions.
Because theres no central authority, users will signal problem-solving methods, which is essentially like a vote.
So we see now that two things are going to happen within Bitcoin. The first is a hard-fork. Hard-forks create new coins, with new code, and potentially new use cases. So we expect that a new coincalled Bitcoin Cashwill be introduced. This article explains Bitcoin Cash for the curious. Essentially its implementing the things that Bitcoin will not be doing on August 1st. It will have its own investors who believe that August 1st BTC solutions are not viable enough. Exchanges are already preparing to support Bitcoin Cash for trading. Keep an eye out for its movement.
The second implementation is called SegWit (which stands for segregated witness). This is meant to increase blocksize (allow for more transactions to be tied into a block and to resolve a bit of troubled spot in the software. You can read more here. This is good news for most, and the value of Bitcoin is up 10% in the last 30 days, reflecting investor confidence.
The second crucial part of all of this, however, is what it means for the value of Bitcoin and your role as an investor.
There have been two camps lately on this aspect: one that points out that, while this implementation cycle has been steady in the last few weeks, it caused more panic and volatility than necessary over the last few months. Its also likely to bring some ups and downs to Bitcoin Cash post August 1st. But I think its important to remember that this wont be the last time there will be signaling needed for updates.
Mahin Gupta, co-founder and CTO of Zebpay told Investopedia, Bitcoin is a decentralized technology. Which means discussions on changes to the network happen in the open, in public and not behind closed conference room doors. These debates are visible and can be messy. This is a feature of bitcoin, not a problem. Such debates are not a one-time issue. They will keep happening as bitcoin grows in popularity. I am confident that the community will come to a consensus soon and then we shall debate how to scale it again.
Gupta is right. Bitcoin, lacking the central authority and community of its younger brother Ethereum, is going to continue to have debates over its scalability. These will not subside, and indeed, will likely cause future forks, debates, and panic. Investors need to take this into effect, as the technology behind Bitcoin will need sporadic updating.
The second camp thinks that this is a major hump to get throughwith more attention and money in this as ever before (see first paragraphs). A Goldman Sachs analyst recently said Bitcoin could hit $5,000 (nearly double its current value), mostly based of the scarcity of the coin itself. The analyst, Ronnie Moss, thinks theres more room to grow before this enters bubble territory as well.
Other analysts have the same sky-high expectations, showing that with more adoption, especially by larger nations around the world, Bitcoin has been on a rocket upward and will continue to trend, based on that adoption. The linked article compares Bitcoins current rise to the Internets in the mid-90s, a comparison many like to use.
Okay, so where does this get us?
In terms of investing, this is a huge moment. Bitcoin is successfully implementing large-scale upgrades with $45 billion invested in it. This can set the precedent for future implementations and debate. This means it can continue to use its momentum (adoption and recognition from global superpowers) to see its value rise nearer to $3,000 and potentially beyond.
Yet, well need more time and adoption to see if it can go much further than that. Other coins and technologies are easier to pivot and update that can do exactly what Bitcoin is doing. As its so large that implementations take time (this one has been talked about since late May) and happen slowly.
This will not be the end and if Bitcoin Cash succeeds, it sets a dangerous precedent for hard-forking off of Bitcoin every time a group of miners or exchanges demand changes be made. If Bitcoins value is hard-forked along with new coins that users find liquidity in, its value will tumble. Same too with any P/E ratio expectations (heres a chart for that, albeit built by a coder himself).
The short call is that Bitcoin value will likely rise on the good news and momentum. The long-term outlook right now is seeing how Bitcoin Cash plays out and if Segwit works, or if it immediately sparks new debate on upgrades. If we see the latter, Bitcoin may be in for a rough road to have any sustained value gain.
Disclosure: I am/we are long BTC.
I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

An all veteran multinational trio of astronauts and cosmonauts rocketed to orbit aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule and safely arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) after a fast track rendezvous on Friday, July 28.
NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik, Sergey Ryazanskiy of Roscosmos and Paolo Nespoli of ESA (European Space Agency) docked at the orbital outpost at 5:54 p.m. EDT (2154 GMT) Friday just six hours after departing our Home Planet.
The three crewmates launched aboard the Russian Soyuz MS-05 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan during a typically hot mid-summers night at 9:41 p.m. Baikonur time, or 11:41 a.m. EDT.
The entire launch sequence aboard the Soyuz rocket performed flawlessly and delivered the Soyuz capsule to its targeted preliminary orbit flowing by the planned opening of the vehicles solar arrays and antennas.

This is the second space flight for both Bresnik and Ryazanskiy and the third for Nespoli.
The new Expedition 52 crew will spend a four and a half month stint aboard the station and continue over 250 ongoing science investigations in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development.
Bresnik, Ryazanskiy and Nespoli are slated to stay aboard until returning to Earth in December.
Whitson, Fischer and Yurchikhin are in the home stretch of their mission and will retun to Earth in September. Shortly after their departure, NASA astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Joseph Acaba and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin will launch on the next Soyuz from Kazakhstan to join the Expedition 53 crew.
Whitson is the most experienced US astronaut with time in space. Her record setting cumulative time in space will exceed 600 days and include a 9 month stay on this flight upon her return to Earth.
The newly-expanded Expedition 52 crew expect to welcome a pair of unmanned US cargo ships carrying new research experiments and supplies, namely the SpaceX Dragon as soon as August and Orbital ATK Cygnus a month or two later, on NASA-contracted commercial resupply missions.
The SpaceX CRS-12 mission will carry investigations the crew will work on including a study developed by the Michael J. Fox Foundation of the pathology of Parkinsons disease to aid in the development of therapies for patients on Earth. The crew will use the special nature of microgravity in a new lung tissue study to advance understanding of how stem cells work and pave the way for further use of the microgravity environment in stem cell research. Expedition astronauts also will assemble and deploy a microsatellite investigation seeking to validate the concept of using microsatellites in low-Earth orbit to support critical operations, such as providing lower-cost Earth imagery in time-sensitive situations such as tracking severe weather and detecting natural disasters.

Veteran 3-Man Crew Launches to International Space Station – Space.com
Posted: at 9:51 am
A Russian Soyuz rocket launched three veteran space travelers from the U.S., Russia and Italy into orbit Friday (July 28), kicking off a five-month mission tothe International Space Station.
The trio successfully launched at 11:41 a.m. EDT (1541 GMT) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, which borders Russia in the north and west. It was 9:41 p.m. local time at the launch site.
The Soyuz MS-05 spacecraft was helmed by experienced Russian cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy, alongside Randy Bresnik (NASA) from California and Paolo Nespoli (European Space Agency) from Milan, Italy. After a 6-hour orbital chase, the Soyuz docked at the space station's Rassvet module at 5:54 p.m. EDT (2154 GMT).
The Soyuz MS-05 rocket carrying Expedition 52 flight engineer Sergei Ryazanskiy of Roscosmos, flight engineer Randy Bresnik of NASA and flight engineer Paolo Nespoli of the European Space Agency launches into space from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan on Friday, July 28, 2017.
Throughout the NASA launch broadcast, Public Affairs spokesperson Dan Huot said ground control in Houston and Moscow were"continuing to get good reports," and confirmed "we had a successful launch."
All three space travelers have been to space before. Cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy first trained for space flights as the commander of a crew during Russia's 105-dayMars500isolation experiment in 2009. He ultimately served as flight engineer aboard the Soyuz TMA-10M spacecraft in 2013, and spent 166 days in space this will be his second launch and long-duration mission. Since last year, he has also served as the chairman for the youth organization Russian Movement of Schoolchildren.
Astronaut Randy Bresnik also experimented in simulation missions early in his career. He commanded the underwater NEEMO 19 mission(the name's short forNASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations) in 2014. This will be his second spaceflight and his first long-duration mission: He flew to the space station aboard a NASA shuttle in 2009. In fact, Bresnik experienced some baby jitters when his daughter was scheduled to be born the day of his first spacewalk. In one bit of trivia, Bresnik's grandfather was the photographer for famed female pilot Amelia Earhart. For this flight, Bresnik told Space.com that he's looking forward toseeing the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse from the space station.
Astronaut Paolo Nespoli is heading to space for the third time: He flew for two weeks on the space shuttle in 2007 to help install a module of the space station, and he revisited the space station in 2010 for a 160-day mission. Nespoli is an Italian astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA). His science mission for ESA is called Vita (short for Vitality, Innovation, Technology and Ability) and was selected by Italy's ASI space agency. Vita is Italian for "life."
Expedition 52 flight engineer Randy Bresnik of NASA, top, flight engineer Paolo Nespoli of ESA (European Space Agency), middle, and flight engineer Sergei Ryazanskiy of Roscosmos wave farewell before boarding their Soyuz MS-05 spacecraft for a launch to the International Space Station from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan on July 28, 2017.
The trio will join the Expedition 52 crew, which includes Peggy Whitson (NASA) of Iowa, Fyodor Yurchikhin (Roscosmos) from the country of Georgia and Jack Fischer (NASA) of Colorado. The latter three have been studying how microgravity impacts cancer therapies since April, and have been measuring the composition of meteors orbiting Earth's atmosphere.
The three new arrivals will participate in many research projects, including a phenomenon that is perhaps of special interest to the astronauts already in orbit: the "puffy face" appearance that astronauts have in microgravity. According to NASA's space station blog, one of the effects of living in space is a tendency of bodily fluids to move up toward the head, which may lead to vision damage.
They will also undertake research projects that pertain to biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science. This new crew will remain at the space station until mid-December, according to NASA.

ISS astronaut Jack Fischer takes us on an enrapturing space station ride from San Diego to Denver! – Watch video – Zee News

New Delhi: From the hot, parched deserts of Africa and the high and magnificent peaks of France and Swiss Alps to gorgeous night and day views of various cities across the globe, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have taken it upon themselves to take us on our personal ISS ride through breathtaking photographs.
Their vantage point in the cupola has now become our favourite place too, since we know where all the beautiful views come from.
The images beamed back from high above are truly a sight for sore eyes and astronaut Jack Fischer it seems, just can't get enough of the grandeur of the views.
The space first-timer has been treating his followers on a regular basis with some of the most breathtaking photographs, ever since he joined the ISS crew in April 2017.
His excitement is pretty much credible as much as it is palpable to be cruising 250 kilometres above the Earth and that comes forth through the lens of his camera.
In his latest post on Twitter, Fischer has posted a stunning space view video of the ISS' journey from San Diego to Denver at night.
He wrote: San Diego to Denverat nightfrom space. It always amazes me how fast were cruisin around the planet, but I sure love the view!
Needless to say, the view is awe-inspiring and we can only imagine how it might look in person.

PR-B School: Students to communicate with International Space Station astronauts – The Lake Country Echo
Posted: at 9:51 am
Robbi Gregory, with PR-B Community Education, said they applied to the program after one community education class met via Skype with a NASA employee.
"We were learning about physics and microgravity and all of this stuff," Gregory said. "It ended with NASA's digital learning network program where educators will talk to kids and it's like a Skype classroom. The kids were ridiculously excited about that even though it was just a guy behind a desk. The fact that someone from NASA wanted to talk to them was huge in their world. Some kids still talk about it and it's been five or six months."
One student asked if girls could work for NASA, and ever since being given a resounding yes, she has decided she wants to be an astrophysicist. The enabling power of that one answer inspired Gregory to look into an even bigger program and apply for the NASA In-flight Education Downlink program, which requires a comprehensive plan and evidence of a clear impact the program would make.
PR-B was selected from 65 educational organizations that submitted letters of intent to take part in this program, in part because of the life-changing impact the program could have on local students.
"It was astounding that these kids were learning about all of this stuff," Gregory said. "They are capable and a lot of them still don't realize they can be a part of it. I think our kids, being low income and rural, I think the impact was pretty phenomenal and compelling to them."
The downlink is still being scheduled. The exact time and date will not be known until Sept. 8, though the tentative plan is to hold the event during a 9-11:30 a.m. window.
"Their time is scheduled up to the five minutes," Gregory said. "Everything they do is scheduled. The fact that they give us 20 minutes is pretty awesome."
The program is no cost to PR-B. If the school elects to have a NASA exhibit at the event, then the school district would be expected to pay for shipping costs. This is still being decided.
Students will be asked to submit questions for the event, and 20 questions will be selected from those submitted. The students who submitted those questions will get the chance to ask them over Skype. The astronauts in question will be Randy Bresnik and Mark Vande Hei.
"This is a really big deal for us," Gregory said. "It's a very big honor for our school to be chosen."
This year the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph and St. John's University in Collegeville are scheduled for a downlink in January. Otherwise the Henning School District, the Boy Scouts of America Northern Star Council in St. Paul and Crossroads Elementary School in St. Paul are the only Minnesota groups to have hosted downlinks in the past.
Nationally more than 200 In-flight Education Downlinks have occurred, according to NASA representatives.

Retired Marine colonel one of 3 astronauts en route to space station – Military Times
Posted: at 9:51 am
A retired Marine officer was one of three astronauts aboard a Soyuz space capsule that successfully blasted off for the International Space Station on Friday.
NASAs Randy Bresnik, Russias Sergei Ryazansky and Italys Paolo Nespoli lifted off from the Russia-leased launch pad in Kazakhstan shortly after sunset, around 11:41 a.m. Eastern. They were to travel about six hours before docking at the space station.
The three will join NASAs Jack Fischer and Peggy Whitson as well as the veteran Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin.
Bresnik, a retired colonel, previously logged 10 days in space when he flew on a mission in 2009, performing two spacewalks. While in the Marine Corps, he served as an F/A-18 test pilot and flew combat missions in support ofOperation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to his NASA bio.
Hes flown more than 6,000 hours in more than 80 types of aircraft, per his bio. He was selected for the astronaut program in 2004 and completed training in 2006.
Russias Ryazansky is the crews most experience astronaut with 160 days in space under his belt.
The incoming crew will contribute to more than 250 experiments conducted at the orbiting lab in fields such as biology, human research, physical sciences and technology development.
Flight Engineer Whitson earlier this week was doing research for a cancer study that may help develop more effective treatments for cancer patients, NASA reported.
