Group fighting offshore oil exploration – Greenville Daily Reflector

Posted: July 20, 2017 at 3:32 am

An international organization dedicated to restoring the worlds oceans is asking Greenville residents to form an advocacy group to protest seismic testing and oil drilling in the Atlantic.

Randy Sturgill, senior campaign manager with Oceana spoke to more than 20 people who attended a meeting organized by the Cypress Group of the N.C. Sierra Club, which has members from 19 eastern North Carolina counties.

This is a Trojan horse, Sturgill said. I brought you here under the pretext of an oil exploration meeting but what Im really asking for is a call to action.

Oceana and other environmental groups are redoubling efforts to fight oil and natural gas development off the United States Atlantic border, and community advocacy groups are necessary, he said.

Sturgill said advocacy groups are needed to re-engage because President Donald Trump signed an exclusive order in April allowing energy companies to move forward with seismic testing off the United States coast.

The surveys are used to map potential drilling sites for oil and natural gas. Sturgill said the order overturned former President Barack Obamas 2016 decision to restrict testing and drilling.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries service is accepting public comments until Friday on proposals to allow companies to incidentally, but not intentionally, harass marine mammals, during the testing process.

Environmentalists have been waiting for Gov. Roy Cooper to address the testing issue. Coopers office announced late Wednesday that he is scheduled to make a statement on offshore drilling this morning at Fort Macon State Park Education and Visitors Centers.

Congressional leaders are responsive to a constituents, and working together individuals can change the tide of policy, Sturgill said.

However, several teenagers representing Greenville-based Save A Sea Turtle said its difficult to know if leaders are hearing their message.

The teens recently met with a representative of U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., to protest future seismic testing off North Carolinas coast because of its detrimental effect on turtles and other migrating fish and mammals off the coast. They said at Tuesdays meeting that Tillis representative said off-shore drilling is necessary to ensure American energy independence and quickly ended the discussion.

Sturgill spoke at length about how residents of Kure Beach convinced their town board to reject a letter sent by the then-mayor to Washington D.C. supporting drilling in the Atlantic. He did so within consent from the board or community discussion.

When the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management wanted to hold only a single public hearing in Wilmington about plans for developing the Atlantics energy resources, citizen protesters, combined with U.S. Rep. Walter Jones appeals, forced two public hearings, one in Wilmington and one in the Outer Banks.Sturgill said 300 turned out for the Wilmington meeting and about 670 for the Outer Banks event. The groups overwhelmingly opposed development.

Strugill said continuous public opposition played an important role in Obamas decision against explorations.Oil companies are now jockeying to begin seismic testing, also called seismic airgun testing.

The testing involves ships towing multiple seismic devices through the water, discharging them at 10- to 12-second increments. The bouncing sounds, which can be heard up to 2,500 miles away, can supply information on possible oil and gas deposits.

With Trumps new order, an area extending from mid-Florida to New Jersey will be tested, Sturgill said.

Advocates have sought to have a neutral party conduct the testing and share the data with interested oil companies, but the recommendation has been ignored so each interested company can conduct its own research.

The Department of Interior estimates more than 130,000 secure creatures could be harmed by the seismic noise. The testing will drive fish deeper and force fish and mammals off their normal migration routes.

Seismic testing also has questionable accuracy, Sturgill said, with data showing it produces a 40 percent chance of finding oil or gas.

Less disruptive technology is being developed, he said, but the process is slow. Sturgill said environmental advocates would like testing to be delayed until the new technology is ready.

Sturgill said his organization wants to engage more inland advocacy groups to show elected officials and energy development supporters that all North Carolinians want to protect coastal resources.

While no one volunteered to lead the new advocacy group, many attending the event did sign up to receive future information.

David Ames, co-chairman of the Cypress Group of N.C. Sierra Club, said hes unsure if another local advocacy group is needed but looks forward to working with Oceana.

We are interested in offshore drilling, so we thought this would be a natural group to collaborate with, Ames said. The Cypress Group and the entire North Carolina Sierra Club is very much opposed to offshore drilling. Our whole emphasis is getting away from fossil fuels and moving to clean energy.

East Coast States Take Lead in Offshore Wind After Paris Accord – Morning Consult

Posted: at 3:32 am

Although the United States dropped its international pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, states on the eastern seaboardof the country are moving ahead with long-term commitments to offshore wind power.

States that want to boost their renewable energy supplies are often the same ones that have pledged continued support for the Paris climate agreement, despite President Donald Trumps decision to leave it. Many of these states see their chance with offshore wind technology, despite the current high costand logistical complications.

Offshore wind supporters New York, Rhode Island and Virginiaare among the nine states that want the United States to continue to meet climate goals under the Paris agreement. Other states with advanced plans for offshore wind include Massachusetts, New Jersey and Maryland. Cities and counties in those states, including Baltimore and Boston, have also joined the Paris climate pledge.

While these states are committed to expanding their renewable energy portfolios, many face obstacles, such as lack of space for onshore wind and solar farms or hydropower facilities. An alternative, transportingenergy from wind farms in northern Maine, upstate New York or Canada, can be too complicated or difficult to manage due to the long distance and overland transmission lines, clean energy advocates say.

That leaves offshore wind, a costly technologythat has bedeviled U.S. developers; among the 12 offshore wind leases issued by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management for federal waters, none are close to construction, according to BOEM. And turbine construction in state waters is only happening for smaller-scale projects.

The only working project is a smallfive-turbineoperation generating 30 megawatts in Rhode Island state waters, owned by Deepwater Wind.

But states along the eastern coast have a unique geographic advantage:North Atlantic waters receive the strongest winds on the East Coast, according to BOEM.

To encourage more offshore wind development, states such as Massachusetts and New York are focusing on infrastructure including ports and underwater transmission lines that would make offshore wind construction easier and more cost-effective.

For example, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R) last summer committed to including offshore wind in the state energy portfolio by 2027. The state plans to receive proposals in December for an offshore wind project off the coast of Marthas Vineyard.

Massachusetts willinvest in offshore wind in a way that stabilizes the cost of energy for the Commonwealths ratepayers and helps achieve our aggressive greenhouse gas emissions reductions goals, Katie Gronendyke, spokeswoman for the states Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, said in an email last week.

Part of the problem is not just wind or underwater transmission technology but getting the bases for the wind turbines out into the open sea, Sonia Aggarwal, vice president of the policy group Energy Innovation, said in an interview last week.

To help with the logistical challenges, Massachusetts also set up a first-of-its-kind marine commerce terminal in the New Bedford port, operated by theMassachusetts Clean Energy Center, aneconomic development agency.

The infrastructure will attract development, but Massachusetts is still far away from putting steel in water, Stephen Pike, chief executive of MassCEC, saidin an interview last week.

New York also wants toinclude offshore wind energy in its portfolio by 2030, and Maryland and New Jersey are planning to invest in manufacturing and infrastructure maintenance to help attract offshore wind business.

Developers seeking to take advantage of the renewed state interest are focusing on one of two approaches in order to overcome the logistical challenges: building incrementally larger projects closer to shore in state waters, following the pattern of Deepwater Wind, the countrys leading offshore developer; or testing a small project to clear the way for an industrial-sized project in federal waters, as Dominion Energy Inc. plans to do.

Deepwater Wind also plans to submit a proposal for the Massachusetts project off of Marthas Vineyard, the companys Massachusetts vice president, Matthew Morrissey said last week, before proceeding with plans to develop its two federal leases.

Dominion Energy, working with DONG Energy,an experienced European offshore wind development company, plans to buildtwo 6-megawatt turbines off Virginia Beach in a state-owned lease, then expand to more than 300 wind turbines to generate up to 2,000 megawatts of energy in surrounding federal waters.

We are confident that this project can proceed without undue logistical hurdles, Lauren Burm, a spokeswoman at DONG Energy, said in an email last week.

Correction: A previous version of this story misidentified which states have advanced plans for offshore wind projects.

Hit high seas on vacation but be careful – Maui News

Posted: at 3:31 am

Summertime. Vacation time. No time to let your guard down. Traditionally, crime goes up during warmer weather, with property crimes and aggravated assaults on the rise. In some locations, murder rates increase, too.

When temperatures rise, there are more windows left open, more sweaty and irritated people seeking relief outside, and more alcoholic beverages consumed in public, all of which can prompt bad behavior.

Maybe you and your family have decided to take an ocean cruise to get away from it all this summer. Well, beware, because there is crime on the high seas, too sometimes violent crime. And consider this: A vessel might be registered in the Bahamas, headquartered in Miami, traveling in international waters and carrying passengers from any number of foreign countries, so law enforcement jurisdiction is murky.

If the ship departs from, say, Florida, and a crime is committed onboard, the local police might investigate once the cruise liner returns to port. The feds have jurisdiction if a crime has occurred against a U.S. national on a ship that has departed or will arrive back in the States. The FBI might be assigned to investigate. But these professionals will be days removed from when the crime was committed. Every detective will tell you that evidence gathered immediately following a crime is often crucial to prosecution.

The cruise industry says it caters to more than 24 million customers each year and that crime rates on board one of those massive floating hotels is a small fraction of the comparable rates of crime on land.

But on dry land, you can immediately call 911 for help. You likely have a cop shop a few minutes driving distance from your location and a fully equipped hospital nearby. On a cruise ship, perhaps hundreds of miles out at sea, youve got . . . well, youve got whatever the ship has to offer.

An official with the Cruise Lines International Association insists there is robust security onboard to assure passengers are safe. But lets get real: Any security officers are working for the cruise line, and their primary allegiance may not be to a victimized passenger. Their efforts gathering evidence, taking witness statements or tracking down suspects may be lacking.

NBC News has reported extensively on cruise line crime and calculated that of the 92 alleged crimes reported on cruise ships last year, 62 were sexual assaults. Im guessing here, but I bet the combination of hot temperatures and free-flowing booze tends to reduce passengers inhibitions. But most frightening is that a majority of the sexual assaults be they committed by crew members or passengers were never prosecuted. A congressional report from a few years ago found that minors were the victims in a third of those sexual assaults.

The dirty secret in the cruise line industry is that crime does occur on cruise ships and very often law enforcement isnt notified, evidence isnt preserved, people arent assisted, said Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. He is sponsoring a bill in the U.S. Senate that would require cruise lines to report any claim of criminal activity to the FBI within four hours, turn over all video evidence, earmark cases in which youngsters are involved and include a federal officer called a sea marshal on each ship. Id like to add that each vessel be equipped with a proper evidentiary rape kit.

NBCs reporting included stories about victimized teenage girls, one of whom tried to commit suicide after she alleged that she was given alcohol and raped onboard a cruise to the Virgin Islands. Another teen interviewed claimed she was sexually assaulted by a crew member in the ships gym. Jim Walker, a Miami attorney, said his firm has represented many victims of alleged cruise ship crime, including one who was just 3 years old.

The average passenger load on an ocean liner is about 3,000. But some mega-cruise liners can hold up to 6,000. Whenever you get that many people in a finite space, lulled by adult activities over here and supervised children and youth activities over there, trouble can develop.

Im sure the cruise lines do their very best to fully vet and hire suitable employees. It would not be in their best interest to do otherwise. But this summer, if you are taking the family on a once-in-a-lifetime cruise to paradise, dont let your guard down. Have a wonderful vacation, but realize that crime can happen anywhere, and you and yours are not immune.

Head First Acrobats take to the high seas in a raucous family show – The List

Posted: at 3:31 am

Australian circus trio tell us about the swashbuckling goings-on aboard the Red Rubber Duckie

Ropes, ladders, rigging, flying cutlasses and derring-do: pirate ships and circuses have a surprising number of things in common. All of which Australian circus troupe Head First Acrobats make the most of in their fabulous family show, Arr We There Yet?. But when it came to creating the piece, this swashbuckling gang from Melbourne had a more pressing reason for making the connection.

'We had joked about it for ages,' says Cal Harris aka Snotty Steve, the sailor with a serious sinus problem. 'Then we booked a festival in Melbourne specifically with this show, but wrote the blurb before we'd done anything on it. The show then sold out so we realised we had to make it fit the blurb.'

The trio has just come offstage at the Brighton Fringe, and if their post-show banter seems joyously candid (with no-holds-barred self-deprecation and ego-free descriptions of their creative process), it's a measure of how much their relaxed stage personas are more than just an act. This is Head First's debut show for children (they received much acclaim at last year's Edinburgh Fringe with Elixir) and has taken two years of 'trial and error' development to reach its current incarnation.

Taking place on board the Red Rubber Duckie ship, we meet unhinged pirates Captain Pricklybeard (Thomas Gorham), softly-spoken Captain Joseph (Rowan Thomas) and the aforementioned Harris as Snotty Steve, as they steer a calamitous quest for buried treasure, dodging low-fi ghosts, a cuddly shark and the sneaking ambitions of one another to each seize the title of captain. There are head balances and hand balances, quick-fire tumbling, plank walking, (or rather plank jumping, by way of a see-saw) and a riotous soundtrack of souped-up shanties and rock tunes.

But what makes the show truly special is the effortless way the three draw in the kids for some interaction. Not only are they unfazed by the unpredictable ad-libs children can bring, they positively embrace them. On the afternoon I saw the show, kids were on their feet shrieking at the ship's ghost, eager to take part when volunteers are called for. In a variation on 'What's the Time Mr Wolf?' involving a treasure-hoarding shark, one participant steals the show by mimicking Harris' floor-slide and seizing the treasure himself.

When I bring this up they all flip out. 'That was amazing! I wanted to high-five him,' says Gorham. The group insist that they rarely experience shy, retiring audiences because, from the outset, their priority is to create an atmosphere where children feel welcome to be part of the action.

'We engage them from the very beginning,' says Thomas. 'So from the start it's not like a closed wall with us on stage and they watch. We bring them into it so that all the way through the show they have input; then they feel like they're in a room with their brothers and sisters and can just yell and play.'

Meanwhile, grown-ups are entertained with groanworthy pirate puns and the acrobatic displays. But ultimately, Thomas admits, it's hard to separate what children and adults respond to. 'I think if we can laugh at what we're making then we know that they will as well.'

Arr We There Yet?, Underbelly's Circus Hub, Middle Meadow Walk, 626 Aug (not 14, 21), 2pm, 1012.50 (911.50). Preview 5 Aug, 6.50.

Hoagland – MicroWiki – micronations.wiki

Posted: at 3:31 am

Hoagland is a Territory of the Empire of Austenasia located south of the American city of Cleveland, Ohio, comprised of an area of uninhabited grassland. Although it has no inhabitants, Austenasian law is enforced by its Governor, Pope Euclid I.

The name Hoagland is an alternate version of the land's former name, Hoogland, which in turn is from the Afrikaans word meaning "highland".

This region was most likely inhabbited by the Erie people before the mid-seventeenth century, and became part of Ohio in 1803. As much of what is now Hoagland is under wires from an electrical grid, land was cleared in 1998 by the electrical company to access the wires on the grids. Many people took advantage of this opportunity and cleared land for fields. In 2006 a housing development was proposed, but was quickly rejected for a number of reasons. Historical satellite images reveal that a road gave direct access to the field in 1952, but had been overgrown by 1967. The field was used for practicing sports until 2014, when it became New Normandy.

New Normandy was founded as a colony of West Germania by Grant Hawkins on 17 January 2014, declaring independence from the United States of America. However, in September later that year, Hawkins declared independence from West Germania due to a lack of communication from its leader, renaming New Normandy the Empire of Nova Atlantis. On 11 January 2015, the now independent land joined Adammia as the colony of Adammic Columbia.

After a year and a half in Adammia, Hawkins renamed the land Hoogland and declared allegiance to the Holy Roman Empire. However, on 14 November 2016 this decision was reversed, and the territory returned to Adammia as Adammic Columbia until 10 June 2017.

After several weeks as a terra nullius which had de facto returned to the United States of America, the territory - now renamed Hoagland - was annexed by the Empire of Austenasia by the request of Hawkins, who as Pontifex Maximus is known as Pope Euclid I in the Empire. Euclid was appointed Governor and Baron of the land, which was received as an Austenasian Territory due to having no permanent population.

Guana Island – Telegraph.co.uk

Posted: at 3:30 am

The bounty from the islands three-acre organic orchard, farm and surrounding waters (everything from passionfruit to edible flowers and, of course, fresh seafood) is presented at Guanas two restaurants, one on the terrace of the hilltop clubhouse, the other a beach bar on the sands of White Bay. Breakfast, a continental buffet with hot items by request, is served at the clubhouse, as is dinner. You can have lunch here, too, but youll likely want to request it on White Bay, a winsome strip thats truly the stuff of Caribbean fantasies.

Across the board the cuisine is superb, a testament to the fertility of the land and the creativity of the chef. Expect dishes such as pancetta with a tamarind glaze, flame-grilled lobster-sized shrimp, and the superb local specialty casserole, corn pie. Wine with lunch and dinner is included, and theres an honesty bar for other alcohol. Socialising is encouraged (guests are seated together at communal tables) but private tables can be requested, and in-room dining is available for an extra charge.

New Report: About A Third Of Democratic State Party Staffers Are Minorities – BuzzFeed News

Posted: at 3:29 am

The advocacy group that successfully lobbied the campaigns of both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders to self-report their diversity data has a new report out on diversity inside Democratic state campaigns.

Inclusv, the group founded in 2015 to promote racial diversity and inclusion in national politics, says that 32% of all staffers employed by 40 state parties (and the DC Democratic Party) are people of color.

According to Inclusv's data, white staffers make up nearly three-quarters of all staff in state parties. Latinos made up just 8% of staff inside state parties, while black Americans made up 14.5%. Almost 40% of the staffers of color came from either Florida, California, Ohio, North Carolina, or Virginia.

The group views state parties as a key area for talent development at the national level, from campaigns to candidates themselves, and holds that state parties with more diverse staffs are more attentive to the needs of constituency groups. It comes off the heels of the Democratic National Committee establishing a $10 million fund that would allow state parties to compete for grants to bolster their efforts, and an added commitment that all state parties would receive $10,000 monthly from the DNC through 2018.

Sabrina Singh, deputy communications director for the DNC, said that Democrats are committed to hiring diverse and talented staff that reflects the diversity of the Democratic party. As we continue to rebuild the party, we know this is a top priority and we are happy to work with Inclusv to further diversify our state parties.

Alida Garcia, executive director of Inclusv, told BuzzFeed News that although the group is enthused by the state parties' willingness to participate, it's more interested in the implementation of its recommendation. Their roadmap will help build state parties that are "more structurally accountable to communities of color," said Garcia.

"Demography is not destiny for the Democratic Party, and our communities deserve intentional decisions from the state parties to include us at all tables deciding our futures," she said.

State parties that did not participate in the study include Nevada, Mississippi, Kentucky, and New Jersey.

Its an urgent matter that the party improves upon these numbers and increase the depth of its reach into communities of color," Garcia said. "Our communities sometimes feel as though Democrats treat us like an ATM, stopping by every two to four years to withdraw our votes, time and money. If Democrats want to get the turnout they need from non-white voters in an increasingly diverse country, they must seriously devote themselves to building a corps of leaders that better reflect the breadth of a big tent party.

Elon Musk says key to opening up space travel is ‘near complete reusability’ of spacecraft – CNBC

Posted: at 3:29 am

The key to opening up low-Earth orbit, and space travel in general, is building rockets and spacecraft that are almost entirely reusable, said Elon Musk.

Spacecraft have to become as much like any terrestrial or sea-faring vehicle as possible meaning they can be reused again and again Musk said, speaking at the International Space Station Research and Design conference in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.

SpaceX made history in March when it was the first to launch an orbital class rocket into space twice. The company has excelled in driving down the cost of launches, and SpaceX has said reusing them can further push down costs, and dramatically reduce turnaround time, allowing for more launches.

"It's super hard with space, because we live on a planet with pretty high gravity," Musk said. This is due to the immense stress placed on spacecraft as it travels in and out of Earth's atmosphere.

Still though, it is worth it.

"The analogy I use with my team is 'guys imagine we had 6 million dollars on a pallet of cash,' " Musk said. "Six million dollars is falling through the sky. Would we try to catch it?'"

Musk said he thinks the next reused rocket can be launched for about half the cost of launching a new one.

He also said that the Falcon 9 booster might be able to be reflown in 24 hours, by possibly as soon as the end of next year.

"The key to that is you do inspections, and no hardware is changed, not even the paint," he said.

Reebok unveils lightweight Floatride Space Boot for astronauts – Dezeen

Posted: at 3:29 am

Sports brand Reebok has released a space boot designed specifically forastronauts taking part in an upcoming voyage to the International Space Station.

TheFloatride Space Boot SB-01has been developed in collaboration with aerospace equipment expertsDavid Clark Company, which is also producing the spacesuits for the mission.

According to Reebok, the shoe marks the first design change to astronauts' footwear in over 50 years.

The zip-upshell of the boot ismade from afire-resistant polymer named Nomex. Inside, a stretchy, adaptable mesh allows the astronaut a full range of movement while keeping the shoe securely on their foot in a weightless atmosphere.

Rebook has alsoimplemented its proprietary Floatride foam into the space boot, giving lightweight cushioning to the sole.

"Weight is a huge factor in space travel with just a single pound having big financial implications," said Matt Montross, from Reebok Innovation. "Traditional space boots were made of rigid leather with firm soles and were not integrated into the actual space suit."

"Reebok Floatride Foam introduced three revolutionary elements to the space boot," he continued. "It decreased the overall weight significantly, it brought the added comfort in a space boot and support that you would expect in a running shoe and it delivered a new level of sleekness and style."

The minimal design of the shoe features simple white branding printed on top of a blue-to-white gradient. It is meant tocomplement the royal blue spacesuits that the astronauts will be wearing on their mission.

The Space Boot SB-01 is currentlybeing tested by astronauts before they travel to the International Space Station viaBoeing's new shuttle, the CST-100 Starliner.

Reebok is also using the Floatride foam on a number of its consumer models in order to make them as light as possible.

A running shoe, named Floatride 100g Racer, will feature the material on its sole, keeping its weight down to only 100 grams. The trainer is set to be released in 2018.

This isn't the first time Reebok has released a space-related shoe. Last year they launched theclassicAlien Stompers, made famous by actress Sigourney Weaver in the 1986 sci-fi film Aliens.
