In Reporting on North Korea, Tech Helps Break Through Secrecy – New York Times
Posted: July 5, 2017 at 10:51 pm
But there is a problem.
South Korea blocks its people, or anyone using the internet in the country, from accessing North Korean websites. If you try to open the K.C.N.A. website, a government warning pops up. Its the same warning the government issues to internet users when it restricts access to pornographic materials online.
I use the Tor browser to circumvent the government firewall. Web pages open slower on Tor than on Chrome and other regular browsers. Still, it's a godsend for journalists reporting on North Korea from the South, where Cold War-era fears still drive the local government to censor the internet.
Whats your favorite tech tool for doing your job?
I use Evernote to help organize my life as a journalist.
With a few clicks, you can clip a news article, commentary, analyst paper, PDF file, video link and other contents you find on the web and want to save for a later reference, and store them in a designated online notebook. I find this Web Clipper function particularly useful when researching a certain topic, say North Koreas market reforms, for weeks or longer; I create a North Korea Economy notebook and save related contents there for easy access.
What is Samsungs influence on South Korea, since the tech companys revenue accounts for a significant portion of the countrys gross domestic product?
Samsung is the biggest among the chaebol, a handful of family-run conglomerates that have dominated the South Korean economy for decades. The countrys top 10 chaebol generate the equivalent of more than 80 percent of the countrys G.D.P. Samsungs flagship company, Samsung Electronics, alone is responsible for 20 percent of the countrys exports.
One cant talk about how well or badly South Koreas economy is doing without talking about Samsung. Samsung has a pervasive presence in the country. It produces best-selling smartphones, TV sets and refrigerators. It runs insurance, shipbuilding and construction companies, to just name a few of its dozens of affiliates. If she likes, a South Korean can live in a Republic of Samsung: She can get married and honeymoon in Samsung hotels; have her baby delivered in a Samsung hospital; take him to a Samsung amusement park; send him to a Samsung university; and stock her Samsung apartment with Samsung home appliances bought with a Samsung credit card.
But the name Samsung also has a darker side among Koreans. Six of the 10 top chaebol leaders, including Samsungs chairman, Lee Kun-hee, have been convicted of white-collar crimes, including bribery, although they have never spent much time in jail. If Samsung symbolizes wealth and technological savvy, many Koreans also accuse the corporate behemoth of corruption and excessive power.
Mr. Lees son, Samsungs vice chairman, Lee Jae-yong, who has been running the conglomerate while his father remains bedridden after a stroke, is now under arrest and on trial on charges of bribing Park Geun-hye, the impeached and ousted former president of South Korea.
How does Samsung affect the way you live and work?
I use only three Samsung products in my office a Samsung TV set, a Samsung fax/printer and the Samsung monitor for my Dell desktop though many of the tech products around me at home and in my office may contain Samsung components, like computer chips.
I used to use a Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone until I switched to an iPhone three years ago. I like my iPhone, but I have a major complaint about it: It doesnt allow you to record your phone conversations. What if a spokesman calls you back and dictates a statement while you are driving a car or standing in a crowded subway car? With my old Samsung phone, I could just tap the screen a couple times to record the conversation. You cant do that with an iPhone.
Recording phone conversations is legal in South Korea, and journalists and others routinely do it. Samsung and others market smartphones with a built-in phone-recording function. Apple doesnt. I am thinking seriously of switching back to an Android phone when I retire my iPhone.
Beyond your job, what tech product are you obsessed with in your daily life?
Im not savvy with tech products. I have my desktop, my company-issued MacBook Air and my iPhone. Thats about all the tech hardware I use. Online, though, I use the Naver and Daum maps all the time when I travel and go to an appointment. They are like Google maps, but more convenient to use in South Korea. Naver and Daum are the countrys two biggest web portals and search engines. Google holds only a minor share in the search engine market of South Korea.
Kakao Talk, the countrys most widely used messenger app, is a must-have for anyone who wants to stay connected in South Korea. Government spokesmen send news releases and media notices through Kakao Talk. Reporters put in queries through Kakao Talk.
I used to use my Kindle a lot, but not anymore. I have switched back to paper books. But Kindle is still very convenient when I am traveling and want to keep my bag light.

Cryptocurrency Has Its Potato Salad Moment With the Useless Ethereum Token – Observer
Posted: at 10:50 pm
Its been almost three years since Zack Brown raised $55,000 on Kickstarter for a potato salad. His goal was $10. He wanted to raise the money in order to pay for making the midwestern cookout staple for the first time.
I made that Kickstarter project to get a laugh out of seven people, so the money and attention were a shock, Brown wrote the Observer in an email. The original intent of the joke was more like, This is funny because its not what Kickstarter is for.' But it didnt take long for him to see that hed created a satire of the site on the site itself.
My first two thoughts were This is ridiculous and How can I get in on this?
But when Brown raised far more money than he ever thought he would, the Columbus, Ohio, resident opted to actually do something with the cash and make a cookbook devoted to the staple of Midwestern picnics,The Peace, Love and Potato Salad Cookbook. It came out two years after the campaign ended, which isnt bad considering the fact that he didnt launch the campaign to make a book and hed never made a potato salad before.
The Useless Ethereum Token logo. Thats a cityscape (no its not). Twitter
Today, theres a new, even more ephemeral way to raise money: by creating a new cryptocurrency. Called an initial coin offering or ICO, entrepreneurs have been creating new digital currencies (like Bitcoin) in order to support various projects. Fortunately, just as it starts to crack mainstream attention, ICOs have gotten their own answer to the potato salad campaign. Its called the Useless Ethereum Token(UET), and its creator will absolutely sell you cryptocurrency good for absolutely nothing.
It went on sale yesterday and runs through July 11.
The UET ICOtransparentlyoffers investors no value, so there will be no expectation of gains, its creator, who only goes by UET CEO, writes on its website. Rememberthis is acompletely honestICO, which means I dont want anyone to mistakenlyexpectthe value of the tokens to go up, either. Theyre called Useless Ethereum Tokens for a reason.
We can think of one other cryptocurrency that came out and promised buyers nothing but the digital asset itself: bitcoin. In the end, every new currency of any kind is a satire on the very strange idea of money.
We wrote about a decentralized company, The DAO, which was working well until a security flaw made it collapse horribly. We wrote about the first Bitcoin felons ICO-poweredsecond act after prison, which fizzled (according to a profile in Fortune, hes glad). Recently, we covered the Basic Attention Token designed by a major web pioneer to change the economy for eyeballs online. It sold out almost instantly. Soon, messaging unicornKik is going to have a crowdsale to foster a new venture capital-independent ecosystem of developers.
Its such a buzzy world thatThe New York Times ran a deep dive recently begging the question: how many millions will get raised in this space for the Securities and Exchange Commission starts putting up red flags? UET CEO sees it much the same way.
I saw that people were investing in ICO after ICO, with each having its own slew of problems (both technical and in principle) and still making absurd amounts of money, UET CEO wrote the Observer in an email. My first two thoughts were This is ridiculous and How can I get in on this? I didnt have a product but I realized that people didnt really care about the product. They cared about spending a little bit of money, watching a chart and then withdrawing a little bit more money. So why not have an ICO without a product, and do so completely transparently just to see what happened?
The satire is actually built into the smart contract as well. Buyers get 1 UET for every 0.1 Ether (ETH) invested, plus a bonus. Every UET bought comes with free UET equal to the number of ETH invested. So, as of this writing, someone who paid 0.1 ETH right now would get 1 UET from the base formula plus 52 bonus UET, because people have put in 52 ETH so far.
Plus, the system will also randomly give away some bonus tokens along the way.
This, along with the bonus blocks were completely intentional, both to mirror some of the goofy crap other ICOs have tried to do in the name of fairness or whatever, and to further highlight that these tokens arent meant to be attached to any real value, UET CEO wrote. What good is an ICO if it just gives away tokens right?
Tokens get released right away. Prices dont swing with ETHs value.
Most crypto watchers online like the gag. We liked this exchange on an Ethereum investor subreddit.
This guy gets it. Reddit
The only way to buy in is with Ethereum, which also provides most of the underlying code. So far, UET has acquired 52 ETH, worth an equivalent of nearly $14,000. Over $1,000 worth has gone in since we have been working on this post. The site continuously updates with investments, but it can all also be verified on Etherscan, a third party site that makes the blockchain records a bit more comprehensible.
So whats UET CEO trying to say with this project? Well leave that for readers to decide, but remember that the best jokes tend to be made by folks who care about a subject enough to understand it well. Will the anonymous entrepreneur imitate Brown and do something substantive at the end of the crowdsale? Or would it be more in the spirit of the project if he just took all the money and blew it on an epic night at Applebees?

Gavin Smith is the CEO of First Global Credit, a London-based cryptocurrency capital markets company, who is behind an upcoming ICO for AICoin. He sat down today to talk with Finance Magnates about the idea behind the offering, the value it will deliver to investors, algo trading and how blockchain technology allows for new forms of cooperative organization.
Learn how to buy Bitcoin and Ethereum safely with our simple guide!
The interview was broadcast live and a video recording is available here:
In contrast to the recent wave of ICOs, Gavin explains that AICOIN is a fully functioning investment service (not an idea in development) that leverages blockchain technology to deliver revenue from two different but complementary profit streams.
The coin uses the power of artificial intelligence to generate ongoing profit. These profits are then used to finance investment in early stage companies focused on public blockchain or AI technology. The quarterly selection of start-up companies will use the collective knowledge and experience of all token holders who vote on which companies will receive investment.
Since AICOIN is built on the Ethereum blockchain, the function of the smart contract is to provide transparency to and supervisory control of the voting process.
Gavin has worked in the European financial service industry for over twenty years. His most recent role prior to founding First Global was designing the global risk strategy for one of the worlds largest physical commodity traders. He has the rare set of skills needed to navigate First Global Credit through the volatility of the Bitcoin market..

The Hive Project Debuts New Cryptocurrency-Based Invoice Financing Platform – Crowdfund Insider
Posted: at 10:50 pm
The Hive Project announced last week the launch of its cryptocurrency-based invoice financing platform. This news comes just days before the company launched its ICO. The company boasts itself as the first cryptocurrency invoice financing platform. It notably provides new financial liquidity to small businesses by leveraging blockchain technology and giving them a range of cryptocurrency-based financing options.
Hive (HVE) uses blockchain (distributed ledger) technology to give every issued invoice a unique fingerprint. This enables businesses to automate the invoicing process and make it available to the general public. We create a central data room for all invoices, with a record kept of the issuer, owner and payer. Invoices can therefore be offered to the market for trading. This will rapidly increase the liquidity available to small businesses and create a central database of invoices available for scoring and auditing. In addition to bridging the liquidity gap for small businesses, the technology provided by Hive will help credit checks to be made on companies and facilitate rapid and real-time auditing.
Speaking about The Hive Projects goals,Jure Soklic, CEO and co-founder, reportedly stated:
We want to help small businesses solve their liquidity issues by leveraging blockchain technology to provide financing options previously only available to large companies. Our platform will dramatically streamline invoice issuance and settlement processes, optimizing small and medium-enterprises ability to access liquidity for day-to-day operations and to finance expansion.
Richard Titus, Advisor to Hive Project, added:
The Hive Project helps small businesses automate invoicing and payments, delivering the benefits of blockchain innovation to commercial entities previously deprived of ready access to finances, Hive Projects end state, a marketplace with advanced trading analytics for peer-to-peer lending, will rapidly increase the liquidity available to small businesses and expand todays often mercenary ecosystem of factoring and lending.
The Hive Project is currently seeking to secure initial capital of BTC 2,000 through its crowd sale, which is scheduled to run for the next six weeks.

Bitcoin could nearly double and reach $5,000 soon, says Standpoint … – CNBC
Posted: at 10:50 pm
Stock research analyst Ronnie Moas said he bought bitcoin this weekend and thinks it could reach $5,000 within a year.
"$5,000 could happen in a few months. It's only starting to gain traction right now," Moas, founder of Standpoint Research, told CNBC in a phone interview Wednesday. "It's starting to spread like wildfire right now."
He pointed out that since only 21 million bitcoin can ever exist, increasing demand for the digital currency will naturally drive its price up.
Bitcoin briefly tripled in value this year, hitting a record $3,025.47 on June 11, according to CoinDesk. The digital currency traded Wednesday near $2,600, still more than double its Dec. 31 price of $968.
"This is not something I could keep my hands off of," Moas said. "What would be more painful than losing [money in cryptocurrencies] is not acting."
The research analyst said he invested a few hundred U.S. dollars each in bitcoin, ethereum and another digital currency called litecoin through Coinbase.com. After he releases a 40-page report on cryptocurrencies in the next few weeks, Moas said he plans to invest more in them.
The research analyst's view on bitcoin joins the optimistic views of others on Wall Street. On Sunday, Goldman Sachs' technical analyst Sheba Jafari said in a note that bitcoin could rise as high as $3,915.

What is Bitcoin ABC? – The Merkle
Posted: at 10:50 pm
Scaling Bitcoin will happen sooner or later. The only question right now is how different teams of developers plan to accomplish this. There are different camps trying to make this happen, either through a softor a hard fork. One of the latest proposals trying to push for a Bitcoin hard fork goes by the name of Bitcoin ABC. It is an interesting proposal, which suggestsan adjustable blocksize cap.
Introducing a Bitcoin hard fork solution is always a contentious proposal. There are quite a few differences between a hard fork and asoft fork. In most cases a hard fork has a greaterchance of causing a network split, which is the last thing Bitcoin needs right now. Despite the risk, we currentlyhave a few Bitcoin UAHF proposals competing for community traction.
The latest project to gain some momentumis Bitcoin ABC. The ABC part stands for Adjustable Blocksize Cap, which indicates users can determine their preferred blocksize accordingly. This feature will be appreciated by both miners and users alike. However, this maycause issues for people dealing with slower internet connections or internet data caps. It appears the maximum block size of this proposal is 16MB, although that is only a temporary placeholder.
Certain aspects about Bitcoin ABC will interest some people and infuriate others. For example, Bitcoin ABC will not support replace-by-fee, whichhas been a popular solution to avoiding Bitcoin network congestion. In theory, a larger block size will be a more effective way to avoid paying high fees, but it may still warrant the use of replace-by-fee. Not supporting this solution is rather strange.
Additionally, Bitcoin ABC has no plans to activate Segregated Witness whatsoever. That should not come as a big surprise to many people. A large part of the Bitcoin community is in favor of seeing SegWit activate, but stillwant nothing to do with it. Moving away from SegWit is also in line with Bitmains contingency plan, which was introduced several weeks ago. A user-activated hard fork without SegWit makes sense for this particular part of the community.
It is possible Bitcoin ABC is one of the three UAHF implementations that Bitmainreferred to in their infamous blog post. This has not been officially confirmed by either party, although many suspect this is the case. The Bitcoin ABC developers are in contact with miners, as well as Jihan Wu and Haipo Yang. This seems to virtually confirm Bitcoin ABC is endorsed by them, evenwithout all the specifics of the program being available.
It appears Bitcoin ABC has the support of various mining pools, but the group behind the proposalseems hesitant to confirm or deny which pools. According to a recent Reddit post, it is up to the pools to publicly announce their intentions. It will be interesting to see which if any pools come forward in support of Bitcoin ABC. We can expect more specifications over the coming weeks and it will be interesting to see if this UAHF solution can truly contend with other proposed solutions.

Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood Sing to Space Station Astronauts (Video) – Space.com
Posted: at 10:49 pm
Country music legends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood serenaded NASA astronauts Jack Fischer andPeggy Whitson who are both currently on the International Space Station during a visit to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston on June 29.
"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such an inspiration to so many," Fischer said to Brooks in a video of the encounter.
Whitsontweeted her appreciationof the musical number, writing, "Loved the @garthbrooks serenade today! I hope you enjoyed meeting the #NASAvillage. Be sure to try the mac and cheese in the food lab!"
Brooks and Yearwood visited the Johnson Space Center to talk to the astronauts from mission control. Fischer confessed to being a huge fan of Brooks, noting that Brooks' song "The River" has been "pretty much my anthem for the last three decades." The song was even played for Fischer while he was waiting on the launch pad to travel to the space station, he said.
"I think that you have so many great songs and so many great messages," Fischer told Brooks. "But it's the heart you put into every performance and the soul that you put into those songs that make them so impactful."
Brooks and Yearwood then went through a few verses of "The River," singing into the telephone that links voice communications between the ground and the space station. In the video, Fischer can be seen singing along.
Brooks also took selfies with the two astronauts. "Could this be the longest-distance selfie ever?"he tweeted.
Brooks isn't the first country star to sing to the astronauts on the orbiting outpost. In 2014, Brad Paisley sent the song "American Flag on the Moon" via tweetto astronaut Reid Wiseman.

‘There Goes Dragon’: ISS Astronaut Snaps Incredible Shots of Departing Capsule – Space.com
Posted: at 10:49 pm
A Dragon cargo vehicle departs from the International Space Station on July 3. Photo by NASA astronaut Jack Fischer
Astronaut Jack Fischer caught some amazing pictures of SpaceX's Dragon cargo capsule leaving the International Space Station today (July 3), and shared the images on Twitter.
The first two pictures show the Dragon space capsule attached to the ISS' robot arm, called Canadarm2, and the capsule moving away from the station. The last one shows a silhouetted Earth and the Dragon streaking through the atmosphere on its way down.
The Dragon capsule, built and launched by Elon Musk's private spaceflight company SpaceX, is the first private cargo spacecraft to make a second delivery to the station. The vehicle was refurbished following its first delivery mission, which launched in September 2014.
"And there goes #Dragon Goodbye to our 1st return visitor since Atlantis in 2011--Come on back anytime, well leave the lights on for you!" ;Fischer tweeted about the departing vehicle. His tweet refers to the final flight of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, a reusable crewed vehicle that operated for almost 25 years.
A Dragon cargo vehicle streaks through Earth's atmosphere after leaving the space station on July 3. NASA astronaut Jack Fisher tweeted this photo with the caption: "Beautiful expanse of stars-but the 'long' orange one is SpaceX-11 reentering! Congrats team for a successful splashdown & great mission!"
The space station released the Dragon spacecraft at 2:41 a.m. EDT (0641 GMT) for its 5.5-hour journey back to Earth, where it splashed down at 8:14 a.m. EDT (1214 GMT). The Dragon capsule launched to the space station on June 3.
The Dragon ferried some 6,000 pounds (2,700 kilograms) of cargo to the space station and brought back 4,100 pounds (1,900 kg). Some of that returning cargo includes experiments that were sent to the space station previously, which will be analyzed in laboratories on Earth. Among the experiments were samples from mice used in testing an osteoporosis drug and one looking at the impact of microgravity on stem cells, according to a statement from NASA. The osteoporosis drug could be of particular importance to future space crews as it might help arrest the bone loss that is a symptom of long periods in microgravity, the statement said.
A Dragon cargo vehicle was separated from the space station on July 3 with help from two NASA astronauts and the orbiting outpost's robotic arm.
SpaceX's Dragon is currently the only space vehicle that can bring cargo to orbit and return intact; other operating cargo carriers Orbital ATK's Cygnus spacecraft, Russia's Progress freighter and Japan's H-II Transfer Vehicle are designed to burn up in the atmosphere after one use. Reusable vehicles could reduce the cost of launches if the cost of refurbishing and repairing the vehicle is lower than the cost of building a new one.
Another Dragon launch to the ISS is scheduled for Aug. 1, to be followed by another in November.

NASA to Test Nuclear Reactor Designed to Power Future Mars Colony – Futurism
Posted: at 10:49 pm
In BriefAfter a 50-year break, NASA has returned to the idea of usingnuclear fission to power space missions. However, providing energyfor off-world colonists is just one of myriad questions we willhave to answer before we could hope to become a multi-planetaryspecies. Nuclear NASA
Being able to producepower on alien worlds will define our terraforming and interplanetary colonization experiences how we generate atmospheres, produce lifes prerequisites, and power machines for exploration depend on it. NASA experts estimate that a Mars expeditionwould require roughly 40 kilowatts of power around enough to power eight houses on Earth and they think they may know the best way to generate that energy: nuclear fission.
For the past three years, NASA has been funding Kilopower, a project that aims to develop a compact, low cost, scalable fission power system for science and exploration.
The projects budget is around $15 million, and in September, the agencywill unveil the fruits of their labor a 1.9 meters (6.5 feet) tall generator designed to produce up to 1 kilowatt of electric power during testing at the Nevada National Security Site.
Although other alternatives for generating power have been put forward, none are as viable as fission. Solar energy, for instance, would require that astronauts stick to regions that receive an adequate amount of sunlight. If you want to land anywhere, surface fission power is a key strategy for that,Michelle Rucker, an engineer at NASAs Johnson Space Center, told Space.com.
Project Kilopower marks something of a fission resurgence for NASA after a hiatus of more than 50 years. The last time the agency operated a fission reactor was in 1965, when they launched the Systems for Nuclear Auxiliary Power (SNAP) project. That project resulted in radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) that are still used to power spacecraft today, as well as the nuclear-powered spacecraftSNAP 10A, which stopped working 43 days after it was launched into space due to an electrical component failure.
Individuals such as Stephen Hawking have issued warnings that Earth cant survive our habitation for much longer, so finding an alternative home for humanity is becoming critical. The question of how to provide power off-world is one of the biggest ones we face as we consider the Red Planet as our future home.
Other aspects of Mars colonization are already falling into place. Elon Musks SpaceX is driving the transportation elementof the cosmic migration forward, developing detailed plans and working on ever-larger spaceships that we could use to get to our planetary neighbor.
Several solutions have been proposed to help us generate a habitable atmosphere. TheDefense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)is considering using bacteria that would form algae to warm and thicken the atmosphere, while NASA detailed at the Planetary Science Vision 2050 Workshop earlier this year how they could build an Earth-like magnetic field around the planet.
If we ever successfully move to another planet, these questions and hundreds more, such ashow diseases will respond to spaceand how reproduction will work, will have to be answered. Estimates concerning how long this will take vary, with some saying decades and others saying centuries. At any rate, let us hope it is sooner rather than later if Hawkings prediction proves to be accurate.
