Save Free Speech From Trolls – New York Times

Posted: July 2, 2017 at 8:53 am

Since then, the anti-free-speech charge, applied broadly to cultural criticism and especially to feminist discourse, has proliferated. It is nurtured largely by men on the internet who used to nurse their grievances alone, in disparate, insular communities around the web mens rights forums, video game blogs. Gradually, these communities have drifted together into one great aggrieved, misogynist gyre and bonded over a common interest: pretending to care about freedom of speech so they can feel self-righteous while harassing marginalized people for having opinions.

At the online video conference VidCon a couple of weeks ago, the feminist cultural critic Anita Sarkeesian took the stage for a panel on womens experiences online, only to find the first two rows of seats stacked with her online harassers, leering up at her, filming her on their phones.

Ms. Sarkeesian has been relentlessly stalked, abused and threatened since 2012, when she started a Kickstarter campaign to fund a series of YouTube videos critiquing the representation of women in video games.

In retaliation, men have threatened to rape and murder her, dug up and disseminated her personal contact information, called in mass shooting threats to her public events and turned their obsession with shutting her up into a competitive sport. All of this, they insist, is in defense of freedom of speech, to which Ms. Sarkeesian, with her precise, rigorously argued opinions about the relative loincloth sizes of male and female video game avatars, somehow poses a threat.

It is not an enviable position to be in.

There are women who have said to me, or to people in my circles, that they dont want to be me, Ms. Sarkeesian told me. They dont want what happened to me to happen to them, and so they keep their head down and they stay quiet. Absence is invisible. We dont even know who has been lost how many were scared away before they even started. What about their speech?

Refusing to quit, as Ms. Sarkeesian has, yields often invisible professional consequences as well. Our videos on YouTube dont get promoted and supported in their algorithms the same way that hate videos about us do, because we cant have comments open, she said. That punishes us.

You can find disingenuous rhetoric about protecting free speech in the engine room of pretty much every digital-age culture war. The refrain has become so ubiquitous that its earned its own sarcastic homophone in progressive circles: freeze peach! Nothing is more important than the First Amendment, the internet men say, provided you interpret the First Amendment exactly the same way they do: as a magic spell that means no one you dont like is allowed to criticize you.

The law does not share that interpretation. The First Amendment only regulates the government, explained Rebecca Tushnet, a professor of First Amendment law at Harvard. Does she think there is any merit in telling a person that her critique of your art is infringing on your free speech? No.

Its been a surprisingly effective rhetorical strategy nonetheless. Americans are fiercely proud of our culture of (nearly) unfettered expression, though often not so clear on the actual parameters of the First Amendment. To defend speech is to plant a flag on the right side of history; to defend unpopular speech is to be a real rogue, a sophisticate, the kind of guy who gets it.

Freedom of speech is such a buzzword that people can rally around, Ms. Sarkeesian said, and that works really well in their favor. Theyre weaponizing free speech to maintain their cultural dominance.

The goal of Ms. Sarkeesians detractors was never really to protect the First Amendment. If it were, more than 8,000 of them wouldnt have signed an online petition to have her and the GamerGate target Zoe Quinn arrested that is, detained by the state in retaliation for speech for addressing the United Nations about online harassment. But they did. (Ms. Sarkeesian and Ms. Quinns crime, according to someone who is definitely a lawyer: pushing for a U.N. intervention (Foreign Agents) with the intent to limit internet free speech which violates the First Amendment of the U.S.)

If their goal was really to protect the First Amendment, they would have at least blinked when the White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus, confirmed that President Trump is considering amending libel laws, presumably so he can prosecute journalists who hurt his feelings.

If the goal was really to destroy political correctness, as Mr. Trump promised was his top priority, they would have rallied behind Kathy Griffin and Stephen Colbert and Johnny Depp instead of by their own definition censoring them with at least as much fury as they generated on behalf of Milo Yiannopoulos and his suspended Twitter account (which was perfectly legal, as per the Twitter corporations speech rights).

If their goal was really to foster free public discourse, we would have seen deafening bipartisan support for Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, the Princeton African-American studies assistant professor and author of From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation, who canceled two speaking engagements in late May after Fox News aired video of her calling President Trump a racist and sexist megalomaniac. Professor Taylor received more than 50 hate-filled and threatening emails, many racially charged, some containing specific threats of violence, including murder, she wrote in a statement.

Where were the brave knights of free speech when Professor Taylor was being intimidated into silence?

They were nowhere, of course (except, perhaps, on the other end of some of those emails), because their true goal has always been to ensure that if anyone is determining the ways that we collectively choose to restrict our own speech in the name of values, they are the ones setting the limits. They want to perform a factory reset to a time when people of color and women didnt tell white men what to do. And only one 2016 presidential candidate promised such a reset.

The election of Donald Trump and crying free speech to end any discussion of cultural sensitivity are not unrelated. Casting the dissent of marginalized groups as a First Amendment violation is the kind of pseudo-intellectual argument that seems reasonable to people who dont have enough skin in the game to bother paying attention. Discourse is good! Sunlight is the best disinfectant! The more airtime we give to irrational bigots on high-profile platforms the more assiduously we hear both sides, stay fair and balanced the sooner theyll be rejected by the public at large!

Unfortunately, as any scientist can tell you (for as long as we still have those), more often than not, sunlight makes things grow. Conflating criticism with censorship fosters a system in which all positions deserve equal consideration, no bad ideas can ever be put to rest, and lies are just as valid as the truth.

Its not hard to draw a straight line from internet culture warriors misappropriation of free speech to our current mass delusions over climate change, the Hyde Amendment, abstinence-only education, health care as a luxury and class as a meritocracy. Free speech rhetoric begot fake news, which begot alternative facts.

The right cannot lay claim to the First Amendment when its own president is actively hostile to it. Sometimes disinfectant is the best disinfectant.

BitAccess Wants to get Canadian Government Officials Excited About Cryptocurrency – newsBTC

Posted: at 8:52 am

Clients must submit their ID for verification. Rest assured most government of Canada employees will not be interested in doing that anytime soon.

It is always quite interesting to keep an eye on Bitcoin promotional events. Getting cryptocurrency into the hands of as many people as possible is not easy by any means. BitAccess is taking a different approach with their latest airdrop. Canadian government employees can receive CA$5 worth of Bitcoin or Ether free of charge. All they need to do is sign up for the service to get the money. An interesting tactic, but can it ever work?

BitAccess is doing an excellent job to promote cryptocurrency in Canada. It has become a lot harder to buy Bitcoin and other currencies in the country as of late. This has mainly to do with strict regulations. Additionally, several Canadian exchanges have halted operations or were acquired by competitors. It is evident there isnt nearly enough competition in the country right now. As a result, it appears cryptocurrency interest in Canada is slowly waning.

To counter this situation, BitAccess is hosting a promotional event. More specifically, they will give CA$5 worth of Bitcoin or Ether to all government of Canada employees. This is quite an interesting take on things, although it remains to be seen if it can be successful. Government employees will need to create an account with the Canada.ca email address. It is possible most organizations will prohibit employees from doing so, though.

More specifically, obtaining this free credit is not all that easy. Clients must submit their ID for verification. Rest assured most government of Canada employees will not be interested in doing that anytime soon. After all, if they arent interested in cryptocurrency, there is no reason to go through that much trouble. Furthermore, CA$5 worth of Bitcoin or Ether is next to nothing these days. It is a nice gesture by BitAccess, but not one that will see a lot of response.

Then again, it is hard to get government officials excited about Bitcoin or Ethereum. There is still a psychological hurdle that needs to be tackled. Governments will never fully see eye-to-eye with cryptocurrency, that much is evident. Promotional campaigns like these may help alleviate some of the concerns. It will be interesting to see whether or not BitAccess can make any impact whatsoever. Promoting cryptocurrency is the right way to go, that much is certain.

Krosscoin The First Church and Charity Centric Cryptocurrency – The Merkle

Posted: at 8:52 am

The church/charity ecosystem is in the billions of dollars globally. The Waves based Krosscoin project is a multifaceted project and multinational team that aims to bring much needed and overdue solutions to the church and charity space. Krosscoin will assist big ministries in migrating to the blockchain where products and materials can be paid for by krosscoin or their native asset.

Krosscoin will also create a matching pair with them to promote liquidity. Krosscoin innovative products will also have a global market with applications for different purposes. Ribbon is its first product and will be released at the end of July.

Ribbon is the worlds first multilingual in-messaging app. It boasts of other features which the Krosscoin core team will disclose shortly before its release.

The Krosscoin team however being the first coin to provide solutions for Churches, NGOs and Charities, actually has a global outlook. They plan to participate in the disruption of several industries such as ecommerce ( a product is being developed for that already), banking, business solutions, media, gaming, government, transportation, oil and gas and international remittance. They also aim to merge virtual gaming with real time charity, an interesting thing to see.

Krosscoin has a very strong community on Facebook and on its slack channel, comprising of people from all over the world. The Waves platform and community is definitely benefiting from the strong Krosscoin ecosystem.

Mark Zuckerberg announced on Instagram that Facebook is changing its mission to not just merely connect the world (which they have done very remarkably) but to also promote unity and togetherness, to connect vitally. Krosscoin seems to be at the forefront in this regard to make this possible. Its logo Lets make good happen underscores the teams mission.

Bitcoin Nears Bear Market Territory – Fortune

Posted: at 8:51 am

Photograph by Getty Images

Bitcoin is currently down about $500, or nearly 17%, from its June 12 th peak of $3,000 per coin. Essentially every other major cryptocurrency, including Ethereum and Litecoin, has seen similar declines. There have been fluctuations since the peak, but the overall trend has been steadily downhill for weeks.

While it can seem odd to apply old-school securities terms to newfangled digital money, that means the crypto market is nearing the conventional 20% decline that defines bear territory.

Few insiders or regular Fortune readers are likely surprised by this. "Bubble" was maybe the single word most consistently spoken by expert panelists at the Consensus conference in late May. Our Robert Hackett diagnosed a speculative bubble two weeks before the peak.

Get Data Sheet , Fortunes technology newsletter.

Recent weeks losses werent the one-day implosion often associated with a bubble. But the more important feature of bubbles delirious optimism ungrounded in reality has been swirling for months. Investment Strategist Matt Prusak, writing at Coindesk, has rounded up some novel examples of "dumb money" (his term) rushing into cryptocurrency. Many of them are quite entertaining if you arent among those taking losses right now.

Prusak points out, for instance, this account of amateurs rushing into the market as it peaked:

The tweet is particularly notable, of course, because Dmitry Buterin is the father of Vitalik Buterin creator of #2 cryptocurrency Ethereum. Dmitry, like most insiders, has been watching for a correction for weeks.

Pusak also points out this doubly amusing post from BroBible, titled "What is The Etherum [sic] Cyrptocurrency [sic] and How Will It Make You Rich AF?" It was posted, misspellings and all, as the market was already heading down.

Pusak dives into several other dimensions of crypto-mania, but Ill cite just one more thats particularly illuminating. Through the entire course of the runup, the value of Ethereum (ETH) has been tracked closely by the value of Ethereum Classic (ETC). While Ethereum may be the cryptocurrency with the broadest real-world adoption, Ethereum Classic is a so-called fork, completely distinct from Ethereum and with barely a fraction of Ethereums adoption.

Pusak says it is "highly likely the price [of ETC] has been driven significantly higher by uninformed investors simply not understanding the difference between the two similar to how adding ".com" to a companys name in 1999 sent stock prices up on average 74%."

To be clear, calling the cryptocurrency market in a given month a hype-driven bubble is not the same thing as deriding the technology. This is revolutionary stuff with huge long-term potential, and for some, declining prices will mean a buying opportunity . But it's an extremely volatile, high-risk asset, and theres every chance that any particular coin even Bitcoin itself could end up being worth nothing at all.

Dragon Spacecraft’s Historic Second Return to Earth: How to Watch … – Space.com

Posted: at 8:50 am

SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft will depart the International Space Station July 2, bringing more than 4,100 lbs. of cargo back to Earth.

UPDATED 7/1 8:52 p.m. EDT: Due to weather conditions in the Pacific Ocean splashdown zone, the Dragon spacecraft's release will be delayed until Monday, July 3 at 2:28 a.m. EDT (0628 GMT).

On Monday (July 3), the crew of the International Space Station will bid farewell to a Dragon cargo spacecraft, which will head back to Earth with more than 4,100 lbs. (1,900 kilograms) of returning cargo in tow. It's this specific spacecraft's second splashdown: It brought cargo to the space station and safely returned to Earth in 2014 as well.

When the cargo craft launched to the space station in June on SpaceX's Falcon 9 spacecraft, it was the first-ever relaunch of a previously used Dragon.

Departure coverage will begin at 2 a.m. EDT (0600 GMT), and you canwatch it here on Space.com, courtesy of NASA TV. Flight controllers will detach the spacecraft using Canadarm2, the space station's robotic arm, and then NASA astronauts Jack Fischer and Peggy Whitson will command the arm to let go, NASA officials said in a statement.

The spacecraft will move away from the space station and then head out of orbit, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean after a 5.5 hour journey. The deorbit burn and splashdown won't be shown on NASA TV.

The spacecraft brought close to 6,000 lbs. (2,700 kg) of supplies, equipment and research experiments to the station. Its cargo included the Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) and the experimental Roll-Out Solar Array (ROSA). After ROSA's experiment completed, the array was jettisoned from the space station because the ground team was unable to roll it back up to stow.

When Dragon splashes back down, SpaceX personnel will travel two days by sea with the spacecraft to return it to Southern California. From there, the craft's cargo will be shipped back to Houston, NASA officials said in a blog post.

Chinese media report Long March 5 rocket failed soon after launch – Spaceflight Now

Posted: at 8:50 am

Chinas Long March 5 rocket ran into troublesoonafterblasting off at 1123 GMT (7:23 a.m. EDT) Sunday from the Wenchang space base in southern China. Check back shortly for a full report on todays launch failure.

Live video coverage provided by Chinas Xinhua news agency.

Chinas Long March 5 rocket is counting down to liftoff Sunday from the countrys tropical island space center with a high-power, electrically-propelled communications satellite.

The heavy-lifter is scheduled to blast off from the Wenchang launch base on Hainan Island at around 1120 GMT (7:20 a.m. EDT; 7:20 p.m. Beijing time) Sunday, heading for an elliptical geostationary transfer orbit with the Shijian 18 communications satellite, the first in a new series of modern Chinese high-capacity relay stations.

Sundays launch will be the second flight of a Long March 5 rocket, Chinas most powerful launcher, which made a successful maiden mission in November 2016.

Chinese space officials will closely watch the performance of the Long March 5 rocket Sunday as engineers prepare to send Chinas Change 5 sample return mission to the moon in November on the third launch of the heavy-lifter.

Ten engines on the Long March 5s first stage and four strap-on boosters will send the launcher skyward on 2.4 million pounds of thrust. The 187-foot-tall (57-meter) Long March 5 will head east from the Hainan Island launch base, which will host its fourth launch Sunday after entering service last year.

Ground crews at Wenchang rolled the Long March 5 to its launch pad Monday.

Riding on a vertical launch table, the Long March 5 completed the trip in about two-and-a-half hours, according to the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology. Swing arms on the seaside launch pads 300-foot-tall (92-meter) service gantry enclosed the Long March 5 for final launch preparations.

Chinas state-run media has not said if they plan any live coverage of the launch.

The Long March 5s maiden test flight last year deployed an experimental satellite named Shijian 17 to test electric thrusters, technology that could give Chinese spacecraft improved maneuverability between different types of orbits around Earth.

The Shijian 18 satellite aboard Sundays flight is the first in an upgraded series of Chinese spacecraft called the DFH-5 platform. Developed by the China Academy of Space Technology, the DFH-5 design is bigger and more capable than Chinas existing satellites, providing more power for communications payloads and additional data throughput for Internet providers, television broadcasters and data networks.

Shijian 18 also hosts a laser communications instrument for even higher-speed data links, and ion thrusters will keep the spacecraft in geostationary orbit, a perch more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator.

China hopes to sell communications satellites based on the new DFH-5 design to international governments and commercial customers.

Ground controllers will run the Shijian 18 satellite through extensive testing to verify the new satellite design works as expected.

Chinese officials say the Long March 5 is a centerpiece of the countrys long-term space ambitions, allowing China to dispatch satellites to space that are twice as heavy as payloads that can fit on earlier Long March rockets.

The heavy-duty rocket can haul about the same amount of weight into space as United Launch Alliances Delta 4-Heavy, the worlds other leader in space lift capability. The Long March 5 bests the capacity of the European Ariane 5 and Russian Proton launchers.

The Long March 5 is one of three new launch vehicles China has debuted in the last two years.

The Long March 6 is the smallest of the three, tailored to deliver small satellites into low-altitude orbits. The medium-lift Long March 7 is designed to carry resupply ships, and eventually crews, to Chinas future space station.

The Long March 5 will haul three 20-ton modules to low Earth orbit for the Chinese space station, beginning next year with the launch of the Tianhe 1 core module. The Long March 5 is also slated to launch the robotic Change 5 mission to the moon later this year to scoop up surface samples for return to Earth, and Chinas first Mars rover will ride a Long March 5 rocket when it blasts off in mid-2020.

The new family of launchers will eventually replace Chinas Long March 2, 3 and 4 rockets, which burn toxic liquid propellants and launch from inland space centers, requiring them to drop spent stages on land.

The Long March 5 rocket, when flown from Wenchang, jettisons its boosters over the South China Sea. Its engines also consume a more environmentally-friendly mixture of liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen and kerosene.

Child Slaves on Mars? NASA Debunks InfoWars Conspiracy Theory – Patheos (blog)

Posted: at 8:50 am

You read that right. A spokesperson for NASA recently went on the record to deny a conspiracy theory that Mars is populated by children who were kidnapped and now serve as slaves.

Guy Webster, a spokesperson for Mars exploration at NASA, responded with the facts about Mars.

There are no humans on Mars. There are active rovers on Mars. There was a rumor going around last week that there werent. There are But there are no humans.

Where did this ridiculous notion come from? It might not surprise many of you to find out it was popularized by an episode of The Alex Jones Show. A guest on the show, Robert David Steele, recently said he believes NASA operates colonies filled with kidnapped child slaves.

We actually believe that there is a colony on Mars that is populated by children who were kidnapped and sent into space on a 20-year ride So that once they get to Mars they have no alternative but to be slaves on the Mars colony.

Jones, who is known for spreading conspiracy theories without any supporting evidence (Pizzagate, anyone?), weighed in with his own thoughts on NASA.

90 percent of the NASA missions are secret and Ive been told by high level NASA engineers that you have no idea Clearly they dont want us looking into what is happening Every time probes go over they turn them off I dont about Mars bases But I know theyve created massive thousands of different types of chimeras that are alien life forms on this earth now.

This isnt the first Mars colonization conspiracy theory Ive seen (although the child slavery part might be new), but I think its the first time a NASA representative has given one enough credence to respond. I wonder if the believers will accept the official story, or continue undeterred in their irrationality?

The most important part of all this is that neither Jones nor Steele ever provided a shred of evidence for the ludicrous and offensive allegations. This urban legend made it all the way to the mainstream, and into the mouth of a NASA spokesman, without any supporting data.

People spread ideas when they are interested in them, without regard to whether or not there is a good reason to believe, and thats the real problem. We can help stop this spread of harmful disinformation by consistently asking for evidence and sharing legitimate research.

Orphan Black recap: ‘Let the Children and Childbearers Toil’ – EW.com (blog)

Posted: at 8:48 am

Science has always been one of the core components of Orphan Black, but so has power who has it, who loses it, and what those people do to wield or gain it. Now, with P.T. Westmoreland in the picture and Rachel by his side, were seeing more of those inner workings than ever before. Were also getting revelations about those early attempts to push the boundaries of human evolution yep, that thing in the woods was an experiment gone awry and the splintering effect it had on the top of the Neolution pyramid.

So while Ss plans uncovered a wealth of information (and a familiar face or two), Kira also did some experimenting of her own in hopes of learning more about her special abilities. In honor of these revelations, this week well run the clones through our trusted Orphan Black Clone Status Hyper-Sequence Generator Calcutron and export them by whos discovered the most this week. Please enjoy the data set below. (#Science!)

Sarah Much to Sarahs displeasure, Kira wont tell her much about her meetings with Rachel but Sarah does uncover a nasty cut on Kiras arm, which she thinks Rachel inflicted until her daughter admits she did it herself to see how fast she could heal. Unable to provide the answers she seeks and with three days until she has to go back to Dyad, S asks Felix to take Kira while she takes Sarah on a recon mission she has a lead that may help them get some leverage.

Their mark is a Dr. Elizabeth Perkins, who, S tells Sarah, could have a key to P.T. Westmoreland but they need her wallet. Ss intel (the woman likes to drink and has a rough relationship with her own daughter) gives them the perfect setup: They stage a fight, and Sarah throws a drink at S and grabs Dr. Perkins wallet as Perkins makes sure S is all right and then invites her to sit down for another drink.Turns out, Dr. Perkins is a psychologist studying, in her words, how PTSD co-occurs with major depressive disorders, and shes in town for some case studies. One person shes supposed to meet is an Alex Ripley, who is supposedly a high-level Neolution defector who may be being held against her will at a nearby mental health facility. S and Sarah are going to go in as Dr. Perkins and her assistant to check it out. (Sarah, meanwhile, realizes theres no way Ss usual methods would have known about the Neo. She wont say where her intel came from, but Im pretty sure we already know remember when Delphine stopped by her door?)

Once the bespectacled Mrs. S and Sarah-posing-as-a-bumbling-assistant con their way into visitors passes, they sneak into an unauthorized ward and find Alex Ripley, who is actually (drumroll please) season 3 baddie Virginia Coady. Oh hey, blast from the Orphan Black past!Shes initially very drugged up and unable to speak, but Sarah still calls her a genocidal bitch by way of greeting and gives her a slap across the face courtesy of Helena once she comes to. Virginias surprised when they ask about P.T., but after S hints they may be able to help her escape if she talks, she says an old friend had her locked away someone who shared her goal of controlling human genetics but didnt always get it right.

RELATED VIDEO: Orphan Black cast teases season 5

That old friend, it turns out, is Susan Duncan, and here we get a wealth of backstory on their early attempts at Neolution-inspired human experimentation. Susan and P.T. recruited Virginia to their cause when she was young, and before they found Kendall Malone or started human cloning projects, someone else was their first human subject. He was P.T. Westmorelands original obsession, but too many mistakes were made on this child who possessed a unique genome. Their science wasnt as refined then, and he began growing tumors and suffering brain damage Susan wanted to stop their experiments, but Virginia disagreed, and, in her words, they created a monster. Susan never forgave her for it, and they split assets in the friend/science divorce: Virginia took Castor, Susan kept Leda, and P.T. kept them apart.

But before she can tell them anything more, the doctor whom the real Elizabeth Perkins had supposedly been there to visit interrupts the intel party. Seeking a means of escape and knowing shell soon be drugged into submission again, Virginia attacks Sarah and steals her visitors pass (which contains a key card), and when the orderlies and doctor restrain her, S and Sarah use the commotion as a means to sneak away. This definitely doesnt seem like the last well see of her.

Cosima They dont explicitly say it, but its pretty obvious the thing Sarah glimpsed in the woods during her little vacation on Evil Mystery Island is the now-grown boy from Susan Duncan, Virginia Coady, and P.T. Westmorelands early days of human experiments and via Cosima, we get out first real (albeit brief) glimpse of him.

After Charlotte and Aisha hear him and spot whats presumably one of his teeth in the woods while going to look for a missing pig from the Revival menagerie, Cosima confronts Mud asking for answers. She already suspects that whatever took a bite out of Daisy the Pig has something to do with Westmoreland. Were on the Island of Doctor Moreau here, she says. Whatever weird s is happening, its coming from the big house. All Mud will say is its not his fault(probably talking about the man in the woods, but possibly Westmoreland), and she warns Cosima to stay out of the woods.

Later that night, Cosima follows Mud as she makes her way in the dark up toward Westmorelands house. Inside, P.T. is hooked up to some sort of IV treatment (is that a dialysis machine? Science people, drop some knowledge in the comments if you know!), and Cosimas snooping brings her down into the basement, where she finds not just old medical equipment but photos of painful-looking experiments/procedures and, more disconcertingly, a cell with chains and blood on the walls. When Mud finds her down there, Cosima demands to know what they did to the man in the woods, but Mud just begs her to get out and frantically sends her out a side door. Still not deterred, Cosima stays close enough to the house to see Mud bring a blanket out to the man and try to talk to him, but he only appears for long enough to growl and bare his teeth before taking her gift and running back into the shadows. Children’s Hospital researcher taps into creative side by writing science fiction – The Columbus Dispatch

In Dan Koboldt's fantasy novels, a medieval world of sorcery converges with its modern technological counterpart.

The metaphor is as apt as any for Koboldt's dual persona: He is both scientist and fantasy novelist.

The 37-year-old spends his weekdays at Nationwide Children's Hospital researching rare diseases in kids.At night and on weekends, he travels to Alissia, a mythical universe of his own making.

Its definitely a very different part of the brain than what I use at work, said Koboldt, who lives in Lewis Center with his wife, Christina, and their three young children. I like it as a creative outlet, and its a fun hobby to have thats less serious sometimes than the stuff I do at the hospital.

In his hometown of St. Louis, Koboldt grew up on a diet of J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank Herbert and other stalwarts of the genre. "Lord of the Rings" and even the original "Star Wars" films gave him an appreciation for the trilogy format.

For years, though, he suppressed his drive to write his own epic tales as he pursued another passion: human genetic research.

Although Koboldt took evening writing classes at Washington University in St. Louis while working on his master's in biology, he didn't really begin writing in earnestuntil 2009, when he firstparticipated in theinternet-based National Novel Writing Month.

"That book will never see the light of day," he said, "but it's good exercise for me."

He continued writing while working as a researcher at the Genome Institute of Washington University, eventually creating an idea for a trilogy in 2013 that he thought had enough promise to begin shopping it to agents.

By early August in 2015, he had a deal with HarperCollins, which agreed to print the "Gateways to Alissia" series under its Voyager Impulse imprint.

Koboldt's first book, "The Rogue Retrieval," was published in March 2016. The storyfollows Las Vegas magician Quinn Bradley, who is recruited by a corporation to infiltrate a medieval realm through a secret portal.

Bradley finds himself returning to Alissia in "The Island Deception," which was released in April. This time, the protagonistsees an opportunity to learn to use real magic for himself.

The stakes will be even higher in the finale, The World Awakening, as competing interests become aware of the portals existence and fight to control the alternate dimension.

"What I like about Dan's writing is that he's able to make Quinn really funny," Koboldt's agent,Paul Stevens ofDonald Maass Literary Agency, said by email."Even though he (the character) is in life-or-death situations, he keeps his sense of humor, often throwing in pop-culture references to lighten the moment."

Like any effective work of science fiction or fantasy, the books draw on the familiar to explore social issues. Themes of corporate exploitation abound, reflected in the shady CASE Global that engages in espionage and uses military drones for its own profit.

The inspiration for the series came after Koboldt read an article about people secretly filming magicians Penn and Teller's live acts in order to reverse engineer their illusions so they could steal them.

It got me thinking about technology, he said. Technology has really changed the practice of illusions and magic.

Since he moved with his familyfrom St. Louis to Columbus in the fall to work at Children's, he has discovered what he called a lively and passionate literary community in central Ohio. He has appeared at several eventsto help build an area fan base, with his next appearance scheduled Sunday at the Book Loft in German Village.

Koboldt and others working at Washington University were recruited to Children's last fall as part of the hospital's efforts to advance pediatric research. As a researcher atthe Institute for Genomic Medicine, Koboldt helps determine genetic mutations that can cause unidentifieddiseasesin children.

His role is primarily as a data analyst.

What I really enjoy is the people who work here are all fantastic, Koboldt said. Were much closer to the patients and families were trying to help.

In his office, a poster featuring the cover of"The Rogue Retrieval" hangs prominently. On his desk, a coffee mug warns all visitors:"Careful, or you'll end up in my book."

"I like to break it out at meetings because everyone around here is afraid they'll end up in the book," he said with a laugh.

It's not an idle threat, as co-worker Vince Magrini has learned.

Magrini whohas knownKoboldt for 10 years, since the two began working togetherat Washington University is quick to point out that a military contractor named "Hank the Tank" Magrini was killed in the early pages of the first book.

He vowed not to read another page until Koboldt resurrects the character.

It's not that Im really boycotting him," said Magrini, who began working at Children's at the same time as Koboldt, "but Im boycotting him.

Joking aside, Magrini praised his colleagues ability to embrace a creative side that many dont associate with scientists.

It helps really diversify somebody," he said. "It centers them; it gives them balance."

Peter White, senior director of the computational genomics group, recognized that same trait in Koboldt, too.

It doesnt fit the stereotype of having this computer science/math/genetics background and to have that creative, artistic side to able to write a novel, said White, adding that Koboldt's books are "on my list to read because I do enjoy fantasy.

Christina Koboldt, who met her husband of 11 years when both were undergraduates at the University of Missouri, was never surprised by his artistic drive.

He often carries a notepad to jot down ideas that occur to him. And,as soon as they put their children to bed, he retreats to his home office to write.

Hes got the creative juice and the imagination and the skill to do it, Christina Koboldt said. I just think its incredible that he can do that while still managing his job and his family and his marriage.

Once Gateways concludes, Koboldt envisions more fantasy adventures.

He hinted at a series set in the future that draws more on the experiences of his day job in which a company designs genetically engineered dragons for households to own.
