The hunt for offshore oil is killing tiny sea creatures that are key for healthy oceans – The Verge

Posted: June 24, 2017 at 2:40 pm

A widely used method to find oil and gas for offshore drilling can kill tiny sea creatures that are key for feeding many marine animals like shellfish, fish, and even whales. And the impacts on these tiny, drifting creatures called zooplankton are seen in an area much larger than previously thought.

The study, published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, adds to the body of evidence that the loud noises produced during oil and gas exploration can disrupt marine life including whales that use sound to communicate and look for food. It also comes just a few months after President Donald Trump has signed an executive order looking to expand offshore gas and oil drilling in the Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

louder than a Saturn V rocket during launch

Oil and gas companies looking for offshore natural resources use seismic airguns to blast compressed air through the water and into the seafloor. The noise produced by these airguns is louder than a Saturn V rocket during launch, according to Nature. So researchers wanted to see what the effects are on the seas base of the food chain, the zooplankton.

The researchers blasted airguns in the ocean off southern Tasmania, and checked zooplankton populations before and after by using sonar and nets. The abundance of these tiny creatures dropped by 64 percent within one hour of the blast, the study says. Two to three times as many zooplankton were also found dead and the impacts were recorded as far away as 0.7 miles. Scientists previously estimated that impacts would occur only within 33 feet from the blast.

Its not 100 percent clear how the airguns are causing the die-offs, but its possible the blast throws off the receptors the animals use to navigate, disorienting them and causing them to die, according to Nature. Because zooplankton is key for feeding larger marine animals, the die-offs could have serious cascading effects.

"Plankton underpin whole ocean productivity," lead author Robert McCauley, an associate professor at Curtin University in Australia, said in a statement. "Their presence impacts right across the health of the ecosystem so it's important we pay attention to their future."

The Big Problem Facing Offshore Wind in Australia – Greentech Media

Posted: at 2:40 pm

Recently unveiled plans for an offshore wind farm in the Australian state of Victoria face a major hurdle: onshore projects are far, far cheaper.

Right now, in Australia its a very competitive price market, said Robert Liew, senior analyst for Asia-Pacific at MAKE Consulting, which is owned by GTMs parent company Wood Mackenzie. The price of onshore wind is even more competitive than, say, a new-build coal project.

Onshore projects are delivering power at between USD $0.45 and $0.56 per megawatt-hour, he said. Offshore wind in Australia might struggle to come in at twice that level.

In Europe, offshore wind is getting close to Australias onshore price range because countries such as Germany and the U.K. have spent decades building an industry to support their projects. Europe also boasts several major offshore wind turbine manufacturers.

But the lack of native turbine-makers or an established supply chain makes it hard for offshore generation to come anywhere close to the price of onshore projects in Australia.

Nevertheless, Victorias government this month welcomed a proposal from Offshore Energy, a little known developer, to carry out a feasibility study for a 250-turbine project between 10 and 25 kilometers off the coast of Gippsland, in the southeast of the state.

A new renewable power generator of this size would drive down electricity prices, and well support offshore energy wherever we can to progress this study, said Victorias Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily DAmbrosio, in a press release.

If the AUD $8 billion (USD $6 billion) project goes ahead, It is hoped the wind farm could be generating power in time to contribute to the Labor Governments Renewable Energy Target of 40 percent by 2025, the press note said.

Its a big "if," though.

Jack-up barges, which are just one vital element of the offshore wind supply chain, can cost $165,000 a day. There are almost certainly none in Australia, nor, quite possibly, in the whole of the southern hemisphere.

If a barge has to be chartered all the way from Europe, along with all the other vessels needed for construction, support, cable-laying and more, and the turbines and other components also have to be shipped around the world, Its going to be difficult to get the cost down, said Liew.

Onshore wind, in contrast, is cheap and easy. The average size of onshore wind farms in Australia is 130 megawatts, and the projects have capacity factors of between 35 percent to 45 percent.

Add in the low cost of plots in Australias vast open landscape, and the country emerges as one of the best places on the planet to build onshore wind farms. Whether offshore can offer better value is the million-dollar question, Liew commented.

And its not just costs that could pose a problem for offshore wind in Australia.

According to Robert Bates, assistant underwriter at the renewable energy insurer GCube, Earthquakes and cyclones, while infrequent in Australia, are natural-catastrophe-type risks that developers in Australia offshore wind may have to contend with.

The seabed surrounding Australia is diverse and complex, he said. Moreover, different soil types require different foundation types. Detailed geotechnical studies will be crucial in determining what will be best for each site.

Finally, given that there are more than 1,100 offshore oil and gas platforms around the country, safely circumnavigating existing marine infrastructure is especially challenging.

Australia does not appear likely to gain an industrial advantage by planting turbines off Gippsland. It has no original equipment manufacturers that would benefit, or nearby markets to exploit.

That said, it is too early to completely write off the prospect of Australian offshore wind. Liew said he spoke to developers curious about investigating offshore projects in the country.

Australia also has a history of welcoming foreign companies to build infrastructure projects, he said. And with high electricity prices, there might be an opportunity to introduce technologies that would not be viable elsewhere.

Finally, the timeframe for the Gippsland project may leave enough room for further cost reductions. Beyond 2020, a low-cost offshore supply chain might be accessible from Asian markets such as Japan or South Korea.

Turbines, meanwhile, might be supplied by firms such as Siemens, Vestas or Senvion, which already have a significant presence in the Australian onshore market.

I wouldnt rule it out, said Liew. Maybe the conditions [in Gippsland] are just perfect. But its a real tough sell.

Greece Okays Exxon-Total Bid To Explore For Offshore Oil – OilPrice.com

Posted: at 2:40 pm

Greece has approved an application by a consortium of ExxonMobil, Frances Total SA, and domestic oil refiner Hellenic Petroleum, to drill for oil and gas off the island of Crete, Reuters reported on Friday, quoting the Greek energy ministry as saying.

Greece has also approved another application, by local company Energean Oil, to start drilling for oil offshore western Greece.

The countrys oil and gas resources management body will launch a tender for exploration licenses in the blocks by the end of June, with the goal to award licenses by the end of this year.

Last month, the energy ministry held talks with Exxon and Total to discuss the potential of offshore gas exploration. Back then, a government official told Reuters that a consortium of ExxonMobil, Total, and Hellenic Petroleum was expected to file an application to explore south of the island of Crete.

Greece, which has been struggling with a severe debt crisis in the past few years and has received billions of euros of EU- and IMF-backed bailout support, is trying to resume efforts to search for hydrocarbons both onshore and offshore and possibly lessen its dependence on energy imports in the future.

In October last year, Greeces energy ministry named a consortium led by Total SA and comprised of Italys Edison and Hellenic Petroleum as the preferred bidder to drill for gas in an offshore block in the Ionian Sea west of the country.

The head of the Hellenic Hydrocarbons Resources Management (HHRM), Yannis Bassias, said last month that the country would start opening new onshore oil and gas blocks for exploration in 2018.

As of next year, and perhaps earlier, we will begin announcing that we are opening the door to whoever is interested in onshore sites, according to the head of Greeces oil and gas resource management body.

ONGC, Aqualis Offshore match rig move record offshore India – WorldOil (subscription)

Posted: at 2:40 pm

6/23/2017

HOUSTON -- The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), with the support of Aqualis Offshore, has matched its own pre-monsoon rig move record set last year offshore India. Aqualis Offshore has also secured a new contract extension to support ONGC.

ONGC executed a total of 33 jack-up rig moves in April, May and June this year. Most the rigs were located on the west coast of India with one jack-up on the east coast. Aqualis Offshore, working together with the ONGC Rigmove cell, assisted with most of these moves, placing each rig on its respective monsoon location before the onset of the seasonal adverse weather conditions.

Aqualis Offshore conducted the work with mariners from the companys Dubai office and with engineering support from London, UK.

Last year I commented that ONGCs pre-monsoon rig move was an impressive milestone in Indian offshore operations. This years achievement is just as remarkable. It is a huge logistics challenge that has been solved safely and effectively by everyone involved, says Rodger Dickson, group marine director at Aqualis Offshore.

In May this year, following last years successfully executed rig moving campaigns, United India Insurance Company once again reappointed Aqualis Offshore to provide marine warranty services to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limiteds (ONGC) assets offshore India.

Under the agreement, Aqualis Offshore will continue to provide marine warranty services to ONGCs fleet of jack-up rigs and mobile offshore production units (MOPU) in Indian waters.

Portraits of GRRRLS. A Fringe Peek – DC Theatre Scene

Posted: at 2:37 pm

Portraits of GRRRLS is a short performance piece created by participants of the program, GRRRLS with HEART. During GRRRLS with HEART we work in Vienna, VA for two weeks. The first five to six days are spent creating: choreographing dances, writing autobiographical pieces, writing a song and other theatrical pieces, and doing some visual artwork. The second week we spend piecing everything together into an autobiographical theater piece rooted in personal storytelling. All participants are teenage girls from around the world, ages 12 18.

Where did the idea come from and why is it important?

Jenna & Brooke: Our producer, Rhonda Eldridge, has a passion for giving young girls the tools to live and lead their best and most powerful lives, and she has decided to bring that passion to life. The mission of GRRRLs with HEART is to empower teenage girls in an intentional community by allowing them to creatively find their authentic voice and strengthen communication skills through an interdisciplinary collaborative arts program culminating in a self-expression based performance of original work. Our hope is that grrrls will go on to impact the world around them using art and creative self expression, strong communication skills from NVC, self-affirmation, and the ability to approach all communities with mindfulness and our core HEART values: harmony, ease, authenticity, respect, and trust.

How does the show become a show? What is the rehearsal process like?

Jenna & Brooke: There are so many pieces that will make this happen! First, we spend time creating. Using prompt-based exercises and explorations, we spend a week with the girls moving, writing, singing, etc. exploring who they are as strong, empowered women. This, combined with visits from guest instructors and guest artists, influences how we piece together the show. When it comes time to create Portraits of GRRRLS, we as a team will choose what pieces will be put into the show. Each piece created individually and collectively will be thrown together to make a creative stew, each ingredient different and unique but it makes something great in the end!

What is the rehearsal process like? We have no idea! Since there is no content created yet, theres no telling what the process of putting together the show will be like. The only things we know for certain are that all content will be created by the girls, and that Portraits of GRRRLS will be a performance based in personal storytelling and female empowerment.

What is it about this project that appeals to you/what attracted you to the project?

Jenna: As a teenage girl I went through many difficult moments in life where I could have just given up. Luckily, I was given a safe environment to share my heartache and joys through journaling. Ever since I have used writing as a tool to help me cope, sort things out, look toward the future. Being invited to help create GRRRLs with HEART and ensure other teenage girls would have a place similar to what I had at their age was an opportunity I could not turn down. I learned and continue to learn so much about myself and my life through journaling, and I am so excited to see these girls shine through the art form that speaks to them.

Brooke: Growing up, I was always the weird, random, curious girl who couldnt sit still. Ideas and questions were constantly swimming around in my brain and younger me did not know what to do with so much creative energy. I became lost in my head and it became harder and harder to be present in my daily life. Performing arts saved me, creating an outlet for all of that energy and curiosity. When I heard about GRRRLS with HEART, it was everything I wish I had growing up. The opportunity to provide a safe space where girls can tell their stories and create a greater sense of self is invaluable, and I cannot wait to create with this years group of GRRRLS!

What exactly do you do? What are you individual responsibilities?

Jenna: Since I connect most with the writing aspect of the program, I work to produce prompts and exercises specifically for writing. During the program I will be a facilitator providing guidance to the creative process during our first week together, and during the second week I will be a director of the show helping piece together the content the girls create. I also hope to be an example to girls who do not connect much with the movement or visual aspects of our program to exemplify that as long as they are willing to try they will have fun with the process.

Brooke: Having an extensive background and affinity for dance movement and theater, Im working to create prompts and explorations that use our bodies to tell stories and access parts of ourselves that havent been explored much before. During the program I will be facilitating portions of the creative process during the first week. The second week I will be serving as a director, staging and putting together Portraits of GRRRLS with Jenna. My goal is to share more art forms with these girls and give them permission to express themselves fully in a physical manner as an opportunity to grow and gain confidence.

How does GRRRLs with HEARTs production of Portraits of GRRRLs speak generationally to older and younger people?

Jenna: I feel that Portrait of GRRRLs will make audience members of all ages excited about the future. Older members will be able to look at these young women with adoration and hope for the future of women in which outspoken and authentic women will be the norm. Younger members will be able to see these young women as an example of confidence and empowerment and be excited that someday they could be like the teenage girls they see on the stage. Each member will resonate with different stories and pieces based on life experience, but I believe each person will leave the theatre feeling hopeful about the future and with a new lens to dream through.

Brooke: Ideally, Portraits of GRRRLS will open minds to the potential of a younger generation. These young women are the next movers and shakers of our society, and hopefully our audience sees the tools that will carry us through and keep society moving forward. Empowered women are becoming our societal norm more and more, and Portraits of GRRRLS highlights that. Women with powerful, constructive, open voices will change the world, and I hope audience sees that through these girls and their stories. People will hopefully leave optimistic and open, ready to share just a little more of their world with the important people around them.

NORTH BAY BUSINESS JOURNAL | June 23, 2017, 6:25PM

From a young age, Nioma Narissa Sadler knew what she wanted to do with her life. What she didnt know was that her unusual upbringing, and challenging life experiences, would prepare her to do the work she does.

Sadler is the founder of WomenServe, a nonprofit based in Sonoma, that improves the lives of impoverished women and girls throughout the world, and subsequently their communities, by providing basic needs like water and health care.

In Rajasthan, India, women and girls walk up to 10 hours a day carrying water on their heads from a pond back to their communities. WomenServe, in collaboration with Traditional Medicinals, the wellness tea giant with products sold in more than 60,000 stores, has contributed to the construction of six large community ponds and more than 400 taankas (tanks to collect rainwater) providing water to 12,000 people.

With Sadlers guidance, five primary schools in rural India have been built, and female health workers have been trained to provide basic health services there.

WomenServe is about telling women and girls stories to create change and awareness, to draw in more interest and bring change towards equality, she said.

In addition to founding WomenServe, Sadler is the Goodwill Ambassador for Traditional Medicinals and is co-founder of the Traditional Medicinals Foundation. As ambassador, she travels the world working directly with farmers and producers to improve the quality of the herbs used in the companys tea. All three organizations work together in improving the communities that grow them.

The company works on the quality piece and the foundation works on the social piece, Sadler said. It is very unusual and is connected to the social business piece which is a big part of what TM is leading in which is to show the world how you can use capitalism to do good if youre intentional about it.

Sadler was born in Michigan, but grew up traveling the country. Her father was a college professor and a psychologist, however, My parents were gypsies. We spent a lot of time in California, Oregon, and Colorado. Theyre very esoteric people, studying the Earth as a living being. They were also isolationists. They didnt like to have the impact of outer world, TV, artificial things affect their children, she said. They wanted their children to just be affected by nature mostly.

As a result, Sadler was life-schooled. Every time the family drove by a school, her heart ached with longing for a traditional education.

I just remember driving by and feeling how much I wanted to be in that school. I had a deep longing for knowledge and learning as much as I could, she said.

Libraries were her saving grace. She checked out as many books at one time as she could, and read her brother and sisters books as well. Her obsession grew around stories and biographies of women and girls, and the common issues they face, like inequality, abuse, and not being allowed to receive an education.

One in particular was the biography of Meena Keshwar Kamal, a feminist crusader in Afghanistan, who was assassinated in 1987, and subsequently became a martyr.

I was very fascinated with her mission, and how, when she got murdered, her mission grew as all these other women and girls took it on, she said.

Sadler did finally go, for a while, to community college. At age 19, however, she became pregnant by an abusive partner. She dropped out of school and worked as a single mom raising her son for six years.

I loved it (college), it was great. I got almost a 4.0, she said. But my life led me away from that to being a mom.

During that time, Sadlers attention was drawn to the Bosnian genocide. From 1992-1995, Bosnian Serb forces killed more than 8,000 Muslims and Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina in an ethnic cleansing campaign.

I became more aware of the rape of women during war, that whole thing hit me, because my partner was abusive to me, she said. There are things that happen in your life that create the passion that you want to do and for me there were several.

Sadler was also influenced by her mother, who grew up a traditional Arabic Muslim.

Traditional Arabic women are just supposed to cook and clean. Her brothers got everything and she got nothing. So there are things Ive seen that have drawn me to this work with women and girls, including my personal story of not having a formal education. So, Ive been planning to do this work for a long time, Sadler said.

The tide changed when she met her husband, Drake Sadler, co-founder of Traditional Medicinals.

We have the same kind of passion and commitment, she said.

The two partnered in the formation of the TM Foundation, providing a blend of head, heart and soul, and now seven years later we are co-managing various parts and reporting responsibilities, Drake Sadler said.

Sadler began traveling with her husband to meet with TMs source communities, and her influence on the way the company interacts with them has been profound.

Traditionally, men from the company talk through a male translator while women are serving and not part of the conversation, even though they do the vast majority80 percent of all herb farming and collection is done by rural, poor women who are very dependent on the income they receive.

Next time, I said, Im absolutely not going without a female translator. I said Drake, you go hang out with the men, talk about tractors and weather patterns, Im going to hang out with the women and find out whats hard on these communities, what are they suffering, she said. You need to involve women in the process, valuing their importance.

By working with women and girls, not just men, Sadler gets a better understanding of issues that plague those communities.

All the girls I work with in Rajasthan are just like me. All the older women, like my age are illiterate and never went to school, she said. Just making women feel important is the first step most people would not take, breaking down that barrier.

Nioma has been focused on removing barriers to womens empowerment for the past couple of decades, in Sonoma County and around the world, her husband said.

She has studied and surrounded herself with (mostly) women who share her interests and have a combination of academic and global field experience working on womens issues. She brings this intention and her passion to her various roles at Traditional Medicinals, the Foundation and WomenServe, he said.

Sadler said she has learned to develop trust and build relationships.

Its not just here were going to give you this. We have to hear them. Hear their voices, their stories, and understand how we can actually work together in a collaborative way, because its not about charity. Its a long-term relationship. This is the foundation of the company, Sadler said.

Sadler is learning the different landscapes that are out there, she said, and learning from the process, which is what shes done her whole life without a formal educational background.

She also taught herself to paint, something she has been doing since a child.

I am a self taught artist. As you know my favorite subject to study is women and girls and issues they face in the world and Im equally obsessed with painting and drawing women and girls issues. I paint in an energetic vibrant way that expresses emotions and feelings using watercolor and acrylics mostly, she said.

Despite her accomplishments and fortitude in helping others, Sadlers biggest challenge for herself is self esteem for not having an education.

She recently received an award in Rajasthan and someone asked her what degrees she had.

I said I have life degrees but not any kind of educational degrees. Ive had to work hard on my self esteem because I was feeling less than. That and freeing my voice to speak on behalf of the company.

SpaceX will launch its second rocket in 48 hours on Sunday – Recode

Posted: at 2:37 pm

SpaceX is hitting a number of milestones this weekend. On Friday, Elon Musks space transportation company launched and landed a used rocket for the second time in its history a sign that the company could be nearing its goal to cut the costs of space travel.

On Sunday, the company expects to launch yet another rocket. Itll be the first time SpaceX has attempted to launch two rockets within the span of 48 hours.

It wasnt exactly intentional. The company pushed back the launch of its reused Falcon 9 from last weekend to this to give its crew time to replace a valve. But the double header, if successful, is a significant step toward the companys goal of shooting rockets every two to three weeks.

SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell told Reuters in February that she hoped the company would get to a point where it was launching rockets at that pace.

Tomorrows launch will position a second batch of Iridium satellites into space using an entirely new Falcon 9 rocket. The rocket used for the first batch, which was launched in January, was the one the company launched again on Friday.

This will be the companys seventh launch in 2017.

Of course, this is all in an effort to eventually go to Mars. Musk, who wants to eventually help colonize the planet, said he expects to send his first robotic mission to Mars in 2020. Four years after that, the famously ambitious executive predicted SpaceX will send its first manned mission Mars.

You can watch the launch tomorrow at Spacex.com/webcast and well update this post with video when its available.

More Study Is Needed on Reproduction in Space If We Want to Colonize Mars – Futurism

Posted: at 2:37 pm

In Brief Many experts assert that humanity must branch out to other parts of the solar system to ensure our survival. However, the effects of reproduction and human development outside of Earth have only just begun to be studied. Human Martians

Humans are gearing up to make the next journey into the relative unknown with the first manned missions to Mars, which could come as early as 2022. The long-term goal of these missions will be to colonize the Red Planet. Experts believe that space colonization and becoming a multi-planetary species is the only way to ensure humanitys survival.

There are plenty of obstacles beyond traveling to Marsthat we will need to overcome before long-term colonization becomes a possibility, such as terraforming the planet to make it more livable for us Earthlings. Further, once a colony is established, the goal would then be to flourish, ensuring the colonys survival in perpetuity. At this point, we are stepping into an interestingnew branch of human biology, reproduction, and human development outside of Earth.

According to Kris Lehnhardt, an assistant professor in the department of emergency medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, This is something that we, frankly, have never studied dramatically, because its not been relevant to date. But if we want to become a spacefaring species and we want to live in space permanently, this is a crucial issue that we have to address that just has not been fully studied yet. Lehnhardts full remarks can be viewed in the video above.

One study brought freeze-dried mouse sperm into space for nine months to see if space travel would affect the health of any offspring created by it. The mouse pups were born healthy, but they were born on Earth. This experiment showed that the radiation and other physical differences of space did not hinder normal reproduction. Even so, this does not mean that these findings would translate to embryos developing in space or on another planet, nor does it mean that the results would have been the same with human sperm.

The effects of lower gravity on fetal development have yet to be studied. A lack of Earth strength gravity could hamper normal human development. And even if the child was healthy for the environment in which it developed, the question then becomes: would that child ever be able to come to Earth?

The future of space colonization is unclear. Even if all of the technology comes together to allow for colonies to be established, biological factors may play a part in hindering the full potential of sustained colonies. At the very least, this would usher in a new era of human evolution.

Why We’re Probably Living in a Computer Simulation – Inverse

Posted: at 2:35 pm

Philosopher Nick Bostrom published a rather convincing argument in 2003 that insisted that were probably living in a computer simulation. Read it and youll understand why Elon Musk says the odds that were living in base reality is one in billions.

In short the argument goes like this:

A lot of people think were on the brink of creating super-powerful computers and A.I.

If we are, then well soon have the ability to create vast simulations of reality, populated with simulated people who are conscious yet dont know they are simulated.

If we can create real-world simulations, we probably will.

Scientists might run simulations of history with different variations to see how things play out. Gamers might do the same. Wealthy people might create fantasy worlds for themselves. If its cheap enough, many people might do it. Who knows; conscious machines might do it to distract the humans whose bodies they are using to generate power. Whoever creates these simulations, its fair to assume they might create very many.

Given that one base reality (the reality that developed this technology) would lead to countless simulated realities (populated, again, with conscious beings), then odds would be that we currently live one of the simulated realities.

There are some ways around this conclusion, but they range from unnerving to unsatisfying.

On one hand, we might be overestimating the likelihood of mankind reaching that super-computer-powered posthuman state.

If we are probably not on the brink of a computing breakthrough either because the technology is unexpectedly complicated or because weve underestimated the existential risks facing mankind then the odds shift back in favor of us living in base reality. A naive, overoptimistic, and possibly doomed base reality.

Another argument against us living in a simulation is that, even if a posthuman state is likely, posthumans wont have much interest in simulating reality.

Futurist and Age of Em author Robin Hanson made this case in a recent exchange with Inverse. We are not actually very eager to simulate our past, except for the few parts of the past that have the most cultural resonance to us, Hanson wrote. Pick a person in the past, and we do almost nothing like simulating their world. Not in novels, in plays, in video games, nothing.

But, uh, count us among the people who would eagerly create simulated realities to play around with and if there are many people like us, and this technology is realistic, then yeah, were back to probably living in a video game.

So what if we do live in a simulation? It might actually be a moot point, Bostrom argues. After all, the reality we live in appears to follow predictable rules, and our way of living and understanding of the universe is built around those rules.

Properly understood, therefore, the truth should have no tendency to make us go crazy or to prevent us from going about our business and making plans and predictions for tomorrow, Bostrom writes.

Metal Blade Records

When a band has been around for a while, sometimes they mellow out as they age, but thats not the case with New Orleans veterans Goatwhore. Their brand of metal is as extreme as ever, evidenced on their latest slab of darkness, Vengeful Ascension.

Twenty years into Goathworescareer, frontman Ben Falgoust says they are still moving forward. I think every song on this record is pretty fking strong, Falgoust says. Each song is a representation of Goatwhore. from day one until now. It really shows our evolution as a band. I dont think that this band has reached its peak yet. I mean, I think were closer now than ever but were still growing; were still evolving.

Instead of their usual bludgeoning beginning, Forsaken kicks off the proceedings with thunderous drums and mid-tempo riffage. That groove continues with Under the Flesh, Into the Soul. The harsh vocals contrast with memorable guitar lines and a blazing solo from Sammy Duet.

While the songs on Vengeful Ascension are as heavy and extreme as usual, this time around they give them more room to breathe. Instead of nonstop brutality, theyll sneak in a brief slower or mellower section before resuming their assault. Even songs that you think will barrel along at maximum intensity throughout, such as Chaos Arcane, dial back to an ominous pace.

That slower tempo makes Where the Sun Is Silent extremely effective, as does the bluesy solo from Duet. As the album progresses, the diversity is even more evident with the Bolt Thrower-esque Mankind Will Have No Mercy and the black metal influenced closer Those Who Denied Gods Will.

The lyrical theme deals with the timeless battle between good and evil, with the cosmic battle applying to earthly concerns. If you look at it from an everyday aspect in life, its the idea of people, hitting the bottom of the barrel or you know, things just arent going right in life emotion plays a huge part in how people react, Falgoust explains.

He adds, Whether its based on love or hatred or sadness or whatever, theres always an aspect of emotion that drives people to an extent. So the whole idea of a Vengeful Ascension is built on being at the bottom, working your way to the top, and realizing along the way that theres other facets to the journey aside from just pure retribution. Within negativity there can exist a positive angle as well.

After working with producer Erik Rutan for the past four albums, this time around Goatwhore worked with Jarrett Pritchard, their live soundman. They wanted a sound that was raw and organic, closer to their live shows. Thats exactly what they got. He managed to effectively capture their power and energy while injecting the dynamics an album needs.

Vengeful Ascension has extremity black metal fans will dig, groove that will appeal to death metal aficionados and potent guitar work thrash lovers can appreciate.
