Toledo’s deep space exploration – Toledo Blade

In 1946, Lyman Spitzer, Jr., a young astrophysicist from Toledo, proposed putting telescopes in space. Fifty-seven years later, I watched as the Spitzer Space Telescope took off from Cape Canaveral, Fla., and disappeared into the night sky.

I was part of the large team that built this great NASA observatory named in memory of the Toledo native. Designed to observe the universe in infrared light, Spitzer continues to make new discoveries, including the recent detection of a star with seven Earth-sized planets.

Today, University of Toledo researchers and students use Spitzer and NASAs other space telescopes by downloading the data and engaging in the exploration of the universe from the Ritter Planetarium and Observatory. My students and I study the birth of stars and planets cloaked in dark clouds of gas and dust.

Infrared light, which we cannot see with our own eyes, penetrates these clouds and allows us a view of star birth in action. The Earths atmosphere, however, glows with infrared light. By launching telescopes into space, we can observe the infrared sky unhindered by the atmospheres glow.

Working with an international team, we observe stars less than one million years old and in the process of growing considered infants in the lifespan of a star. Our goal is to understand how the clouds of gas collapse into stars and planets, as well as to better understand the birth of our own solar system 4.6 billion years ago.

To make sense of the universe, astronomers at UT use observations made with many different telescopes on Earth and in space. Each observation is a piece of a cosmic jigsaw puzzle.

My graduate students use the Discovery Channel Telescope in Arizona to take the temperatures of infant stars. That opportunity is made possible by UTs 10-year partnership with Lowell Observatory. On our UT campus, a team of undergraduates observes stars orbited by disks of hot gas using Ritter Observatory in an effort to understand the origin of the disks. One student recently discovered a companion star orbiting one of those stars.

Sometimes, more than one telescope is used. A UT researcher worked with an international team to combine the light from four telescopes to create sharp pictures of the powerful wind from a star 100 times more massive than our sun.

An undergraduate on my team also compared data from two space telescopes made six years apart and discovered a burst of energy from a young star consuming a big gulp of gas.

In recognition of our robust efforts in research, UT was invited in 2016 to join the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, or AURA, as one of 47 institutions, including Ohio State University and Yale University, tasked in the oversight of many of our nations telescopes. The students and researchers at UT are privileged to have such high-tech telescopes at our disposal. But you dont need to look at the stars to see how space exploration benefits our daily lives.

Consider the GPS in your smart phone. It is the product of 400 years of discovery, from Newtons laws to Einsteins relativity and quantum physics.

Space exploration also places our world into a vast cosmic context. Back at Ritter, I am preparing for the next big space telescope the James Webb Space Telescope, which will be launched in 2018. I cant predict what we will find with this new telescope, but I can predict, confidently, that the universe will continue to astonish us.

This week's Spotlight on Research is with Dr Padraig Murphy Lecturer in science communication at the School of Communications, DCU

You study science communication - how did you develop an interest in that?

I like it because it combines my interests in science and in the sociology and philosophy of how people talk about and understand issues.

When I was a teenager I liked biology and English in school and I chose science I did a degree in environmental and biological pollution sciences in Wales and I enjoyed it.

Then I worked in the pharmaceutical industry and I was even trying my hand at acting. I saw an ad in the paper for the Masters in Science Communication in DCU, so I decided that would combine my interests in communication and science.

Now you research and teach at DCU. What kinds of issues have you explored?

I now run the Masters in Science Communication and teach on the programme. Ive done a lot of research work on the environment and biotechnology, and how people perceive new technologies in those areas.

One project funded by the EPA was to set up a citizens jury to deliberate a new project that was starting in Ireland to grow GM potatoes that are resistant to potato. That was an interesting process.

People came forward from the local community to hear from experts about the project and its implications. In the end, people were quite comfortable with the project; they were more concerned about aspects like patenting discoveries arising from the work.

Another big area is climate change. I have worked with the FuJo Institute here in DCU to look at Irish coverage of climate change in media and social media.

We found that there were low levels of denialism but in general coverage has been low. That said, it spiked around the time of COP21 in Paris in 2015, and since then climate change has been covered more as a political issue in the media here.

Im interested now in looking at how popular broadcasts and services like weather forecasts could be used as a public engagement tool for increasing awareness of the science of climate change.

You have also looked at the sights and sounds of nanotech whats that about?

Nanotechnology has been a big interest of mine for many years, particularly because it was seen by some initially as a potentially dangerous thing but those fears dont seem to be as acute now, although they still exist.

"I have worked with Dr Norah Campbell from Trinity College Dublin Business School and Dr Cormac Deane from IADT on how nano is portrayed visually in TV programmes, films, ads and so on.

We have found that the visual aspects can represent nano in an alien way. Theres an element of strangeness there. We are now looking at sounds in nano media too."

You are part of big European projects to encourage responsible research and innovation what are you doing there?

Responsible research and innovation, or RRI, is a bit of a buzz term at the moment, and the underlying premise is to make sure that research and innovation is designed thinking about the outcomes and impacts on wider society.

DCU is involved in a European Horizon 2020 project called NUCLEUS (New Understanding of Communication, Learning and Engagement in Universities and Scientific Institutions) that looks at ways of embedding RRI in university research.

We look at how science can be more responsive to grand challenges like population growth and food and water security and constantly asking are we doing the right kind of research for society and how we can involve the public.

We have 17 institutions across Europe and also institutions in South Africa and China involved.

RRI is a really prominent area of interest for me, as it brings in the philosophical and ethical dimension of how we talk about science, and how it cant be too teachery and removed, and how it could engage all aspects of society.

You were also a co-editor of the 2017 book Little Country, Big Talk: Science Communication in Ireland. How did that come to be?

The book celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Masters in Science Communication in DCU and it features contributions from graduates.

It also showcases some research conducted by our Celsius research group on engagement with science and technology.

Brian Trench was the driving force, and with Dr Declan Fahy here at DCU and myself we brought it together reflecting on how the landscape of science communication has changed in Ireland over those decades.

And how has it changed?

There is definitely greater public engagement with science in Ireland and researchers are being encouraged to communicate more, but I think we need to develop better forms of engagement around more politicised issues like water, wind farms and incinerators, and we need more of the media engaging in serious coverage of science.

What do you do when you are not teaching and researching?

I still have the theatre bug, and Im currently involved on the production side of a play called An Experiment with an Air Pump by Shelagh Stephenson, which explores science and ethics and will be performed in Smock Alley in Dublin from July 4th.

Moving average convergence divergence (MACD) is a trend-following momentum indicator that illustrates the relationship between two moving averages. MACD is calculated by subtracting the 26-day exponential moving average (EMA) from the 12-day EMA. A signal line, the 9-day EMA of the MACD, can then be plotted on top of the MACD, acting as a trigger for buy and sell signals. There are three methods used to interpret the MACD. The first is Crossovers. When the MACD falls below the signal line, it is bearish, indicating that it might be time to sell. When the MACD shoots above the signal line, the indicator is bullish, indicating that the price of the commodity is probably going to experience upward momentum. The second method is Divergence, meaning that when the price of the security diverges from the MACD, it signals the end of the current trend. Lastly, there is the Dramatic Rise. When the MACD experiences a dramatic rise, the signal indicates overbought status and will probably soon return to more normal levels.

The 9-day difference between a short-term and long-term moving average. A value above 0 indicates a bullish signal while a value below 0 interprets as a bearish signal. Volume is the number of shares traded specific period of time. Every buyer has a seller, and each transaction adds to the total count of the volume. BRIT and US soldiers were involved in a huge NATO military drill in the shadow of Russia as fears of invasion increase.

It is NATOs first defensive drill on the border between Poland and Lithuania and involved 1,500 troops.

This comes as tensions between Vladimir Putin and the US rose at the weekend as a US jet shot down a Syrian warplane an ally of Russia.

Sergei Ryabkov, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, called the incident yesterday a "dangerous escalation".

Before his inauguration, Donald Trump asked a security expert three times during a briefing, why the US couldn't use nuclear weapons after he becomes president.

American helicopters landed in a field in rural Lithuania on Saturday, startling grazing horses and cows.

US Lieutenant General Ben Hodges said: The gap is vulnerable because of the geography. It's not inevitable that there's going to be an attack.

But if that was closed, then you have three allies that are north that are potentially isolated from the rest of the alliance.

Russia denies any plans to invade the Baltics, and says it is NATO that is threatening stability in eastern Europe.

But Hodges, who commands US forces in Europe, said it was crucial for the alliance to show it was ready.

"We have to practice, we have to demonstrate that we can support allies in keeping (the Gap) open, in maintaining that connection," he said.

Eleven NATO countries have sent 4,000 troops to Lithuania to participate in this years Iron Sword exercises.

There are currently 4,500 troops deployed in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

The Poles have been pushing other NATO allies to use some of these troops to secure the vulnerable Suwalki Gap.

"The training helps present a credible defence force that hopefully will deter aggression, but if not, we'll be prepared to move to defend the borders of NATO," added Lieutenant Colonel Steven Gventer, who leads the US battlegroup in Orzysz.

A Good Trip is a journey into Mauss personal experience with psychedelics, and is self-described as part stand-up, part storytelling and part TED Talk.

Flagpole: Can you explain the basic concept of a psychedelic comedy tour?

Shane Mauss: I decided to do a show with the theme of psychedelics about two years ago. It started getting more and more popular, so I decided to build a tour around it. The shows about my personal experiences with psychedelics, but also about a lot of the research being done behind them today. It also tackles a lot of the misconceptions about psychedelics, trying to de-stigmatize and demystify them for people who maybe dont know a lot about them.

FP: Has anything about your act or your overall view of psychedelics changed as youve traveled and talked to people on the road?

SM: When I started doing this show, I was mostly just drawing from personal experience. I really had no idea how big the psychedelic community was, or how much research was being done around psychedelics today. Theres an incredible amount of really intriguing and inspiring work being done. At first, this was more or less just another comedy show that I put together, centered around a subject that was personally important to me. What I didnt know is how important this topic would be for other people. Learning about how psychedelics can help treat people with PTSD and depression has been kind of the biggest lesson Ive learned along the way.

FP: What led you to want to blend the worlds of scientific research and comedy?

SM: Ive always been interested in various scientific subjects. Its not something I really pursued in school, because Ive always wanted to be a stand-up comedian. As I caught breaks and ended up doing stand-up full-time, I got tired of doing jokes just for the sake of it and wanted to shift to talking about topics I was more interested in. I would have amazing conversations over lunch or dinner with my academic friends I had made, and I always thought, Man, I should have been recording that. So I started the Here We Are podcast three years ago, and its been an entertaining and educational journey. I enjoy it just as much as my stand-up career.

FP: Would you say that podcasting is an important part of being a modern day stand-up comedian?

SM: I dont think that anyone has to do comedy in any one particular way these daystheres a million ways to go about it in the modern era of comedy. I certainly think there is a lot of opportunity in the podcast realm. A lot of people have still never even listened to a podcast, but I think its getting more and more popular all the time. It can definitely be difficult for people to find their own niche. A lot of podcasts are just comedians interviewing other comedians, which is fine, but Im glad to provide something for people who want something a little different.
