Tropical moisture in Caribbean keeping our weather interesting – NBC2 News
Posted: at 3:41 pm
A large plume of tropical moisture in the Caribbean will keep things interesting for us as we head into Father's Day weekend.
The important thing to know is there does NOT appear to be a tropical threat to Southwest Florida in terms of an organized tropical system.
If you look at all this moisture from space on satellite imagery, the best way to describe what you see is a BIG mess.
There's no defined area of low pressure, no circulation, just a large disorganized collection of clouds and storms.
So if (and that's still a big IF) we do see tropical development in the Gulf, it's going to be a very slow process and not something that's going to sneak up on anyone.
The National Hurricane Center essentially gives this area of disturbed weather no chance to develop into a tropical entity within the next 2 days.
This could all change by early next week, though.
By then, a lot of this moisture will shift into the southern and central Gulf of Mexico, where forecast models have been hinting for days that an area of low pressure could form.
In this time frame, the Hurricane Center puts the odds of tropical development at 60% (as ofFridaymorning).
The good news for Southwest Florida is even if a tropical system forms in the Gulf next week, we're pretty confident it's not coming here.
The most likely track would be into the southwestern Gulf, perhaps near Mexico or South Texas by the middle of next week.
So, why do we care?
Well, keep in mind we're talking about a huge plume of moisture, and even though any potential tropical threat would stay far from us, we'll probably see a surge of deep tropical moisture over Southwest Florida by late this weekend into next week.
What that means for us is more cloud cover and higher rain chances, which we'll start to notice on Father's Day as showers and storms become more widespread by the afternoon.
Depending on how things evolve over the next few days, this moisture could linger over Southwest Florida for a few days, so we could see a pretty unsettled and stormy start to the week.
So, enjoy your weekend. Check back as we fine tune our forecast over the weekend.
This is not something we really need to be concerned with with respect to a tropical threat, but you'll want to plan on more rainy days ahead across Southwest Florida.

Hornbeck Offshore Services Inc. announced today that ithas refinanced its existing $200 millionrevolving credit facility with a new credit facility providing up to $300 million of term loans. The six-year term of the new credit facility extends the maturity of the old credit facility from February 2020 to June 2023.

The new facility may be used for working capital and general corporate purposes, including the acquisition of distressed assets and/or the refinancing of existing debt, subject to, among other things, compliance with certain minimum liquidity (cash and credit availability) requirements.
As of 2 p.m. EDT, shares in Hornbeck were up over 30% on the news.

BP pushes ahead with offshore India gas plan – MarketWatch
Posted: at 3:38 pm
LONDON-- BP PLC said Thursday it is pushing ahead with long-delayed efforts to develop natural gas offshore India in a $6 billion investment with India's Reliance Industries Limited.
The companies are expecting to produce 425 million cubic feet of gas a day from deep water gas fields roughly 70 kilometers off India's east coast by 2020, in the first of three projects they plan to develop with the funds. Between 2020 and 2022 they're expecting to add another 1 billion cubic feet a day of new gas production, assuming the other two projects are approved by the government.
BP first partnered with RIL in 2011, spending $7.2 billion for a 30% stake in oil and gas fields operated by the Indian company. The deal was the company's first major investment since its fatal blowout in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, and came at a time when BP was desperately selling assets elsewhere to help pay for the fallout from the spill.
It was meant to mark a step toward new growth prospects in a market where demand for oil and gas was growing rapidly, but for years government caps on gas prices limited profitability and stymied investment.
"It's taken a while to develop a natural gas price to help develop these projects," BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley told the industry CERAWeek conference in Houston in March. "It is behind in developing these resources."
But recent reforms to encourage development of India's natural resources, have helped to remove uncertainty over the gas price energy companies can hope to achieve for new production.
Now, the British oil giant seems ready to pile in again, hoping to take advantage of India's rapidly growing market. The country already consumes over 5 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day, according to BP. It hopes to double that number by 2022.
Though weak oil and gas prices have pressured spending across the industry and delayed new projects, BP has made it clear that it is back in growth mode after years of retrenchment. In addition to its latest investment in India, the company intends to add 800,000 barrels a day of new production by the end of the decade and has ambitious plans to increase profit from its refining and marketing arm.
In addition to their plans to boost gas production, BP and RIL also said Thursday they would look for other opportunities in India in conventional fuel retail as well as lower carbon alternatives.

Canadians tout offshore strengths – reNews

The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labradors 30-year history operating offshore oil and gas projects provides a solid foundation to support offshore wind development, according to a new supply chain study.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA) identified home-grown strengths in several areas such as geotechnical services, health and safety, research and education, environmental engineering and consulting, ocean technologies, monitoring and modeling and legal expertise.
The association wanted to quantify the many similarities between the needs of the offshore oil and gas industry and the offshore wind energy sector, said NEIA executive director Kieran Hanley.
As the cost of renewable energy development continues to decrease, and the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions continues to increase, we believe that new offshore wind energy projects on this side of the Atlantic Ocean are likely, said Hanley.
With the expertise we have developed through our offshore oil and gas industry, we are well-positioned to participate in those developments if we are adequately prepared, he added.
The study, carried out by Stapleton Environmental Consulting, is a preliminary survey of existing local capacity.
There are two major elements of the supply chain that are unavailable in the province and are highly unlikely to ever be sourced locally a wind turbine supplier and turbine installation vessels.
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Canadas Beothuk Energy are developing a 180MW project off the islands west coast.
The pair proposes to install Siemens turbines on gravity base foundations about 20 miles offshore in the Gulf of St Lawrence.
The next big steps for the St Georges Bay scheme will be to secure an offtake agreement and environmental approvals.

5 Hotels With Private Islands – Successful Meetings

Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino (Oranjestad, Aruba) The Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casinooffers 556 accommodations across two hotels: the family-friendly Renaissance Ocean Suites and the adults-only Renaissance Marina Hotel. Both settings offer access to the resort's eight restaurants, bars, and cafes; its 24/7, 3,500-square-foot fitness center; its spa; and its 15,000-square-foot casino. Although the resort has 22,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space, groups looking for something a little more special can take an eight-minute water-taxi ride to Renaissance Island (pictured above). Along with Aruba's only private beaches -- including one that's family-friendly and one that's adults-only -- the 40-acre island has a "spa cove" where guests can receive seaside spa treatments, a renovated beach bar and restaurant, and a water sports program offering snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, sailing cruises, ocean kayaks, and paddleboats. Groups can reserve part of the island or rent it out in its entirety.
El Conquistador Resort, A Waldorf Astoria Resort (Fajardo, Puerto Rico) Spread across 500 acres overlooking the Caribbean Sea where it meets the Atlantic Ocean, El Conquistador Resort is a Waldorf Astoria property that counts among its many amenities an 18-hole golf course; seven swimming pools; more than 23 restaurants, bars, and cafes; a 26,000-square-foot spa; and an onsite water park. Unquestionably, however, the highlight of the 918-room resort is Palomino Island, a 100-acre private island where guests can enjoy activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, and horseback riding. The island also can be transformed into an outdoor event venue for groups up to 1,400, who also will have their run of the resort's 100,000-square-foot conference center.
Sandals Royal Caribbean (Montego Bay, Jamaica) At Sandals Royal Caribbean, British traditions loom large in honor of Jamaica's history as a British colony. There's the resort's Georgian-style "Great House," for instance, which is surrounded by manicured gardens and roaming peacocks, as well as its English amenities, including afternoon tea and croquet. Groups will trade Britain for Thailand, however, when they board a dragon boat to the resort's private offshore island. Inspired by the East, the island features a private beach, a circular pool, a Jacuzzi, a swim-up pool bar, private cabanas in which to receive spa treatments, and an on-island Thai restaurant, not to mention diverse entertainment options such as tropical cocktail parties, Reggae concerts, and bonfires.
Shangri-La's Le Touessrok Resort & Spa, Mauritius (Trou d'Eau Douce, Mauritius) Thanks to its remote location in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, the island nation of Mauritius already feels pretty private. Just in case it doesn't feel secluded enough, however, Shangri-La's Le Touessrok Resort & Spaon the country's east coast offers its own, even more private island. Two of them, in fact: Ilot Mangnie and Ile aux Cerfs. The former is open exclusively to hotel guests and features a beach club with private cabanas and on-island butlers. The latter is home to an 18-hole championship golf course that was designed by pro-golfer Bernhard Langer, as well as water sports such as kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, and windsurfing, just to name a few. Both make spectacular event venues.
Canoe Island Lodge (Diamond Point, NY)You don't have to drop big bucks and travel thousands of miles to partake in private-island life. Closer to home, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, isCanoe Island Lodge, a historic resort that's been welcoming individual and group guests to the shores of Lake George since 1948. The family-run property can accommodate groups of up to 175 guests in accommodations ranging from lakeside chalets to traditional log cabins. Although the vibe is more "summer camp" than "beach vacation," there's just as much fun to be had on Lake George as there is in the Caribbean. Activities include hiking, sailing, fishing, and waterskiing, just to name a few. Plus, groups can utilize the natural-sand beach on Canoe Island -- the resort's private island, located three-quarters of a mile across Lake George -- for barbecues, clam bakes, and beach volleyball.

21 fascinating islands on the Thames you (probably) didn’t know about – Telegraph.co.uk
Posted: at 3:36 pm
To mark 90 years since the death of Jerome K Jerome, author of Three Men in a Boat, we've unearthed 21 of the most fascinating islands and eyots on the Thames.
This estuary island - whose named means "Isle of Sheep" in ancient Saxon - has the distinction of being one of the few parts of Britain to have been occupied by an overseas power since the Norman invasion. A Dutch fleet captured it in 1667, before clearing off after a few days with supplies, ammunition and guns.
It played an important role in the early history of British aviation, being home to Lord Brabazon's Royal Aero Club and the Shellbeach Aerodrome, and possesses Britain's only established scorpion population, brought to the island on board a ship in the 19th century.
Inhabitants of the island (there's around 40,000) call themselves "Swampies".
Recognisable to regular viewers of the Boat Race, Chiswick Eyot is accessible by foot at low tide, almost fully submerged at high tide (tree branches excepted), and like many islands in the Thames was used in the 19th century for the growing of osiers, used by basket and furniture makers.
The island was in the headlines in 2010after a pensioner claimed he had been living a Robinson Crusoe lifestyle on the island for six months, while sleeping in a net to avoid the incoming tide.
Known as Strand Ayt until the English Civil War, this islands current name was inspired by the myth that Oliver Cromwell took refuge there. A secret tunnel supposedly linked the island to the Bulls Head pub in Chiswick, though no evidence of it has ever been found.
A tollbooth was set up on the island in 1777, and a smithy was built there in the 1865, surviving until the 1990s. The island's only inhabitants now are birds, such as herons, Canada geese and cormorants.
Now uninhabited, with no buildings, Brentford Ait was once home to the notorious Three Swans pub. Fred S. Thackers The Thames Highway Locks and Weirs, published in 1920, explains: In March 1811 one Robert Hunter of Kew Green described the island to the city as a great Nuisance to this parish and the Neighbourhood on both sides of the River. It contained a House of Entertainment, which has long been a Harbour for Men and women of the worst description, where riotous and indecent Scenes were often exhibited during the Summer Months on Sundays.
It is now covered with willows, planted to obscure the Brentford gasworks from the view of Kew Gardens. A gap in the middle of the island, apparent at low tide, is known as Hog Hole.
Once called Petersham Ait, this island made news way back in 1898 when its owner Joseph Glover considered selling it to Pears soap so the firm could erect an enormous advertising hoarding.
This Twickenham mudbanks louche heyday was in the 1960s, when the Eel Pie Island Hotel became a surprisingly popular music venue, hosting the likes of Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones. The island developed into something of a hippie commune, and is now home to around 120 inhabitants, a couple of boatyards and a handful of artists' studios, which can be visited on occasional open days.
In 2005, the comedian and writer Danny Wallace attempted to invade it, declaring himself leader of Eel Pie Island, until the Metropolitan Police negotiated a peaceful handover of power back to the Queen.
Located above Molesey Lock, Taggs Island - previously known as Walnut Tree Ait - was once home to the Thames Hotel, a venue frequented by well-to-do Londoners including the future Edward VII. The hotel was rebuilt by Fred Karno a man credited with two great deeds: discovering Charlie Chaplin and inventing the custard-pie-in-the-face gag but was eventually demolished in 1971.
The island is now occupied by houseboat residents, including Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour.
Known as Folly Island until 1890, when the hotelier and opera impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte, founder of theSavoy, bought it and had a house built there. He intended to use it as a secluded annex of the luxury hotel, but was refused an alcohol license. Nevertheless, W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were regular visitors. A footbridge was added in 1964, and there is a small marina.
In 1798, Horatio Nelson, still smarting from losing an arm the year before, foiled Napoleon's planned invasion of Egypt during the Battle of the Nile. His reward among other things was this 280-metre island near Shepperton Lock, which he used as a fishing retreat. It is now occupied by a couple of dozen houses, with Egyptian names such as The Sphinx and Memphis.
A few hundred metres downstream from Runnymede Bridge, and connected to the north bank of the Thames with a footbridge, Holm Island was once used as a romantic hideaway by Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson (they is the largest house on the island, known as 'The Nest').
One of several sites that lays claim to being where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215,this 3.72-acre chunk of Berkshire was put up for sale in 2014(the asking price? 3.95million). The Telegraphs Christopher Middleton described it as the perfect chance to become a custodian of history.
Inside the islands main house there is a Charter Room and an octagonal piece of stone where the parchment itself was supposedly spread out. The island served as a meeting place for Henry III and the future Louis VIII of France two years later, while far more recently - in 1974 - Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit and planted a tree in the garden.
Located in Old Windsor, Friday Island is so called because its shape supposedly resembles the footprint of Man Friday from Daniel Defoes novel Robinson Crusoe. It was for 30 years, until his death in 1991 the home of forensics expert Dr Julius Grant, renowned for proving that the Hitler Diaries were forged.
Referenced in Jerome K Jeromes Three Men in a Boat (passing through the lock here was when they first spot Windsor Castle), Ham Island contains 37 luxurious homes, many of which were badly hit by flooding in 2014. It is also home to the Blueacre Horse Rescue Centre.
Owned by Eton College since 1923, and located just upstream of the Oakley Court (the location of Dr Frank N Furters residence in The Rocky Horror Picture Show),Queens Eyot contains a handsome clubhouse and can be hired out for functions and weddings.
Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, acquiredthis islandnear the gastronomic enclave of Bray in 1738 for use as a fishing retreat. He hired architect Robert Morris to build a lodge and a temple, and commissioned Andieu de Clermont, a French artist, to fill the former with unusual depictions of monkeys involved in humanlike activities, such as shooting, rowing and smoking (a forerunner to the PG Tips ads?).
The lodge became a hotel in the 19th century, and over the years has welcomed Edward VII, Edward Elgar, Nellie Melba and H.G. Wells, among others. It is currently closed for major renovation and will reopen in late 2017.
Close to Maidenhead, Berkshire, Boulters Island was the home of Richard Dimbleby, the late BBC broadcaster and father of David and Jonathan.
Found just north of Henley-on-Thames, Temple Island lies at the start of the course for the towns annual regatta. Its main feature is James Wyatts folly, built in 1771 and with an interior based on recently discovered designs from Pompeii. It is now owned by the stewards of theHenley Royal Regatta, who have carried out restoration work to the temple, made it available for hire, and retained part of the island as a nature reserve.
An (almost) heart-shaped island, Sonning Eye is utterly idyllic, possessing an 18th-century watermill and 12 other Grade II-listed buildings. It has been a favoured location of many artists, including George Price Boyce, the Pre-Raphaelite painter, but more recently attracted the attention ofUS film starGeorge Clooneyand his new wife, the human rights lawyerAmal Alamuddin. They bought the island's Mill House for a cool 10m in 2014.
Located near Caversham Lock, close to Reading, View Island was once a boatyard but has been a public park since 1998 and is notable for the carved wooden sculptures found scattered on it. It can be reached from the Thames Path at Hills Meadow, to the east of Reading Bridge.
This island accessible only by boat is best known as the location of a duel in 1163 between Robert de Montfort and Henry of Essex, the standard bearer to Henry II. According to W.M. Childs's The Story of the Town of Reading (1905), the quarrel arose when during a battle with the Welsh Henry of Essex allegedly dropped the standard and cried out falsely that the King has been slain a cowards act, declared de Montford. Essex and Montfort were ferried to the island, where Robert of Montfort "thundered on him manfully with hard and frequent strokes." Henry fell, was presumed dead, and was taken away by the monks of Reading for burial.
