Why I wish I were a liberal – Chicago Tribune
Posted: June 14, 2017 at 4:41 am
I would love to be a liberal. As it is, in order to defend my conservatism, I have to lay out my worldview like a spread sheet. My beliefs begin with the logic of the ancient Greeks and the medieval scholastics. Informing this philosophy is my Christian faith. In the matter of politics, I tend to base my arguments on theses propounded in the Federalist Papers and in the works of Alexis de Tocqueville, Friedrich Hayek, and Ann Coulter.
It has become tedious, carrying all these books in my head. If I were a liberal, I could make do with just five words in my intellectual arsenal, sufficient to address any contemporary issue.
Russia, climate change, and Koch brothers are all a liberal needs to say in order to assert his ideas. What accounts for President Donald Trumps actions? In foreign affairs, Russia. On domestic policy, the Koch brothers.
The Syrian civil war, the drought in California, the extinction of this or that amphibian: all caused by climate change.
Read the pages of The Economist or National Geographic. Listen to cable news. The lead-in or the bottom-line, in sum, will be one of these three incantations.
There are other slogans, of course, to which liberals resort in a pinch, everything from black lives mattering to carbon-neutral hoo-ha. Failing to make their point by chanting, they riot, burning their own safe places as a show of forceful inarticulation.
The Red Guards of Chinas Cultural Revolution had their own catchphrases, default responses to anything disagreeable bourgeois, Yankee imperialists, class enemy. Our 21st century snowflakes, emulating their fellow Marxists, have conjured their own demonology. This is what seven years of college will do to a person train him or her to use a dozen different words for coffee, while allowing for just three answers to all of lifes questions.

Newly-minted Liberal cabinet ministers will earn about $1000 extra per week – Globalnews.ca
Posted: at 4:41 am
Along with their new titles, the BC Liberals newly-minted cabinet ministers are in line for a bonus, in a manner of speaking.
Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon swore in Christy Clarks 22-member cabinet Monday, all of whom stand to take home a little extra pay before a possible defeat at the hands of the NDP-Green alliance in the coming weeks.
University of the Fraser Valley political scientist Hamish Telford says the extra cash isnt chump change.
A cabinet minister gets a 50 per cent top-up on their base MLA salary, so cabinet ministers get about $150,000 a year.
He says that works out to about an extra $1,000 per week for sitting at the cabinet table.
But while its something of a bonus for Clarks caretaker cabinet, Telford said it isnt costing the public anything extra.
If Clark and her 21 Liberal cabinet ministers didnt fill the positions, Telford said the province would likely have a similarly-sized NDP cabinet in place.
Some people may argue that the NDP will inevitably form the government, so they should have been appointed from the start and started working on important files, he said. But there is a process to go through here and the Liberals had every right to form a government.
Clarks cabinet is made up of 13 men and nine women, including five new faces and several ministers who shuffled portfolios to take over for MLAs who were defeated or retired.
In addition to fleshing out her cabinet, Clark also appointed 13 parliamentary secretaries who each take home an additional $15,882 per year.
The Legislature will be recalled next Thursday for the Throne Speech, with the NDP-Green alliance expected to force a confidence vote the following week.

Lawmakers move closer to state budget appealing to Freedom … – The Union Leader
Posted: at 4:40 am
"I think many things are being done to take care of the Freedom Caucus," said state Sen. Lou DAllesandro, D-Manchester, during a break in the budget negotiations on Tuesday.
Republican leaders from the House and Senate are close to a budget deal designed to attract Freedom Caucus votes through additional cuts in spending, lower revenue estimates than either the House, the Senate or the governor have proposed up to this point, and a new tax cut.
Budget conferees continued their grinding line-by-line review of the $11.8 billion spending plan, agreeing to a projection of $4.8 billion in state-generated revenue (not counting federal funds) over the two years of the budget.
Thats $29 million lower than estimates in the Senate-passed budget and $44 million less than the governors estimates, although the committee agreed to add $13 million to the Education Trust Fund over the two years through internet sales of lottery tickets.
Conferees also agreed to include in the budget the elimination of the electricity consumption tax. Billed at a rate of 0.00055 cents per kilowatt hour, it amounts to about 33 cents on a $120 electric bill, and generates about $6 million for the state budget each year.
The conservative revenue estimates were approved despite protests from Democrats on the committee, who endorsed the projections provided by Republican Gov. Chris Sununu. "The governor provided realistic estimates and these are artificially low," said Sen. Dan Feltes, D-Concord.
The lower revenue estimates set the stage for spending reductions demanded by members of the Freedom Caucus, whose 40 to 60 Republican votes will be essential to pass a budget without Democratic support.
Feltes said Republicans had an opportunity to win Democratic votes if they would agree to the revenue estimates submitted by Sununu, give up on a new round of business tax cuts and add about $45 million in spending, mostly to support health and human services programs.
That now seems out of the question, which means the budget that goes to the full House and Senate next week is likely to reflect additional cuts in spending.
Senate President Chuck Morse, R-Salem, set the stage for that outcome late Monday night, when he proposed a cut in General Fund spending by $28 million in each of the two years, for a total of $56 million.
As of early Tuesday night, the conference committee had agreed to a $5 million a year college scholarship program proposed by Sununu, and an increase of $500,000 per year for domestic violence programs.
Conferees also agreed to create the Office of Child Advocate to provide third-party oversight of the Department for Children, Youth and Families, at a cost of $140,000 a year, paid for out of general funds.
Other positions approved by the committee include one new attorney to prosecute election law violations, at a cost of $75,000 in the first year and $73,000 in the second.
House negotiators conceded to the Senate on judicial branch appropriations, eliminating a new Superior Court judge but adding a new Circuit Court judge in 2019.
A new pathologist position was added to the Medical Examiners Office to help ease the backlog of drug-related cases.
The House agreed to Senate changes in the states alcohol and drug rehabilitation fund, allocating 3.4 percent of liquor commission revenues to the fund and earmarking up to $4 million for construction and operation of a drug rehabilitation wing for juveniles at the Sununu Youth Services Center in Manchester.
State police got most of what was requested, including five more troopers for the Granite Hammer drug interdiction program in 2018. If the department can fill those positions, it can come back to the Legislative Fiscal Committee for five more in 2019.
Some of the most controversial issues, like funding for full-day kindergarten, a new round of business tax cuts and rate increases for nursing home services, remained unresolved as of early Tuesday evening, although negotiations continued into the night.
All decisions of conferees are tentative and subject to change before final approval of the compromise spending plan that will go before both chambers for a vote next week.
Union Leader Staff Writer Kevin Landrigan contributed to this report.

Sun Life kicks off Financial Independence Month with beautifully … – ABS-CBN News

In 2012, Sun Life Financial launched five short films, starring the likes of Angel Aquino, Ketchup Eusebio, and the late Lilia Cuntapay.
At that time, the country's leading life insurance company had one purpose in mind-- to boost people's financial literacy and encourage them to invest money.
Little did they know that these films would be recognized abroad. In fact, one went as far as the New York Festivals.
So, as the company celebrates Financial Independence Month this June, they are launching short films titled "Waves" by Zig Marasigan, "She said, She said" by Nic Reyes, and "Sayaw" by Mihk Vergara.
Dubbed "Sun Shorts," these films revolved around three stories love, hope, and commitment that are inspired by real-life stories of Sun Life clients.

Each film is accompanied by a reaction video from Sun Life brand ambassadors Matteo Guidicelli, Judy Ann Santos, and Piolo Pascual.
Charo Santos was also present during the launch at the Makati Shangri-la on Wednesday. According to the 61-year-old showbiz veteran, she is proud to have gone through the different stages of life for these taught her many lessons.
"I've gone through the "kilig" of young love. As a mother, I've struggled between raising my children and building a career. And I've experienced what it's like to build a relationship amidst the many trials and challenges of life," she said.
Santos added that she continues to learn a lot of things every day. But above all, she realized that the best things we have are the relationships we build through time.
"The people we love inspire us. They give us courage. They give us purpose. They give us a reason for living, and they made us better versions of ourselves. And so it is very important and it's imperative that we learn to nurture and build these relationships every way we can. These relationships are the ones that will define us as a people," she added.
"And in this Financial Independence Month, this is the message we wish to convey that we should be free to express our love and care for the people we truly love in the best way we can, and make sure that we will secure a bright future for our loved ones and be there for them every step of the way, and Sun Life will help us in making that happen. "

According to Sun Life's chief marketing officer Mylene Lopa, Sun Life continues to advocate financial literacy by utilizing the digital platform to reach more Filipinos. Short films, she added, are effective media in conveying powerful messages.
"Through short films you can convey a very beautiful story. It doesn't take too much time. It's not very imposing on our audience. Mga four minutes lang, we can already impart a very important message to them," Lopa said.
On Wednesday night, Sun Life launched the short film "Waves," which instantly garnered millions of views on social media. The films "She said, She said" and "Sayaw" will be launched on June 14 and 21, respectively.

Inquiry date for Chester flood plain homes plan – ChesterChronicle.co.uk
Posted: at 4:39 am
Its groundhog day for campaigners who must once again attend a planning inquiry to fight a 142-homes scheme in the Chester flood plain.
A government decision to refuse the plan at Clifton Drive playing fields off Sealand Road, following the first inquiry, was overturned by the High Court.
This means a second inquiry will be held at Ellesmere Port Civic Hall from July 11, presided over by the original inspector, Richard Clegg.
Friends of North Chester Greenbelt will present the same arguments as last time about why homes should not be built in the River Dee flood zone although the plan was actually supported by Cheshire West and Chester Council back in December 2014.
Spokesman Andy Scargill said: The whole thing stinks. The site is inappropriate for building on. Its category three flood plain which means its all liable to flooding to a considerable depth should the River Dee rupture. The embankment flood protection was built in 1790. The Environment Agency says if you were building it today, you wouldnt build it like that. The whole idea is a nonsense.
The successful legal challenge by developers Bark Street was based on a change in circumstances referenced in a council officer's report on a similar 130-homes scheme targeting flood plain on the other side of Clifton Drive.
Legal advice in that case indicated alternative nearby sites, less prone to flooding, were no longer available to applicants Bloor Homes and Sealand Commercial Properties although the scheme still failed the exceptions test because on balance the project would cause more harm than good.
The High Court ruled this fresh information, about the lack of alternative sites, should have been taken into account by the Secretary of State in the Bark Street application.
An appeal was lodged by Bloor Homes and Sealand Commercial Properties against CWaCs decision to reject their 130-dwelling scheme in Clifton Drive but this was later withdrawn. However, Sealand Commercial Properties, in partnership with developers Astu, are targeting the same land with a larger 280-homes scheme, called Ogilvie Park, but also improved flood protection and a proposed public park. A decision is awaited.
Mr Scargill, who has noticed both Bark Street and Astu are registered to Richmond House in Guernsey, added: The community came up with a Local Plan which did not include either of these parcels of land. That should be the end of it. We shouldnt have speculators coming over from Guernsey buying up pieces of cheap unsuitable land in the hope of building houses in order to make a profit.

Flashback: A Kiss Song Unites Mankind In Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey – RollingStone.com
Posted: at 4:38 am
Throughout both Bill and Ted movies, the titular teenage metalheads are presented as little more than dim slackers barely able to play their instruments, even though we learn they'll one day make music so righteous that it will put an end to famine and war, uniting the planet and ushering in a new utopia for mankind. We never hear a note of this actual music until the very end of 1991'sBill and Ted's Bogus Journey when our heroes return from "16 months of intensive guitar training" to finally play one of these magical songs we've heard so much about.
They then break out Kiss' cover of Argent's 1973 tune "God Gave Rock and Roll To You" with a new guitar solo by Steve Vai. Kiss modified the lyrics to the point where they felt compelled to change the title to "God Gave Rock 'N' Roll To You II," but the message of rock music as a unifying force remains. It was the most attention a new Kiss song had gotten in quite some time, but it came at a very dark time for the band. Drummer Eric Carr was deathly ill from heart cancer when they recorded it, and was only able to contribute backing vocals. He plays drums in the video (which you can watch here), but passed away at age 41 just a few months later. It's one of the few post-makeup songs that Kiss play in their live show today, and one of the only Kiss songs featuring both Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley on lead vocals.
The big performance in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey seemed to wrap up the movie series quite nicely, but Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter (now an accomplished documentary filmmaker) have been pushing for a third move for years. "Basically, they're supposed to write a song to save the world and they haven't done that, Reeves said last year. "The pressure of having to save the world, their marriages are falling apart, their kids are kind of mad at them, and then someone comes from the future and tells them if they dont write the song it's just not the world, it's the universe. So they have to save the universe because time is breaking apart."
This comes up in interviews every time Reeves is promoting a new movie, and a thirdBill and Ted filmalways seems to be just a year or so away from going into production, but we've been hearing that for a good decade now. It seems like no studio is willing to bankroll this idea, and not without good reason. Sequels from long-dormant franchises have a very dicey history. Look no further than Dumb and Dumber To and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles if you don't believe us.
But we think that Bill and Ted 3 will be different. Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey is one of the only comedy sequels in history that live up to the originals. These are iconic characters that paved the way for Wayne and Garth and Beavis and Butt-head. They deserve a conclusion to their trilogy. Hollywood, don't give us another John Wick movie. Give us Bill and Ted 3. While you're at it, make sure Death (aka the Grim Reaper) has a large role. He's the best part of the second one. And when the time comes, maybe have Kiss cover another Argent song, perhaps "Hold Your Head Up" this time.

By Gerald Ford
In this Midweek, a columnist shares an amusing catalogue of last meals, ordered by prisoners facing execution.
It got me asking not only what would I eat, but how would I end up in that mess?
I could only blame the kind of future world I see in my worst nightmares, where non-conformity is a capital offence
It is the year 2028 and New Zealand is in trouble.
The global Ministry of Environmental and Security Services (MESS) took over from the last indigenous Prime Minister (a cryogenically preserved Roger Douglas) three years ago, and life is not much fun.
The national anthem and the haka have been banned as fostering nationalism, now as dirty a word as racism used to be.
Without their inspiration, the All Blacks havent won in two seasons.
Now we sing the international anthem, Its a small world after all, with lines in six languages.
Not that Disney has fared that well. The 18th remake of Captain Planet bombed at the VR plex.
(This is a giant maze of cubicles with headsets and gloves. The genetically modified popcorn is as big as walnuts so it can be held in gloved hands, but to us old-timers its not the same.)
Sheep and beef farming has been discontinued and the nearest thing you can get to a burger is a lentil, mussel and synthetic monstrosity known colloquially as a McMummy.
Economics is simpler since the Globo our new unit of currency was instituted, and tax dodging is trickier, too. The compulsory smart chip implants have turned us all into walking wallets.
There is a black-market currency of old New Zealand $1 coins, Pokemon cards, .22 bullets and cigarettes.
Just dont let MESS catch you with the cigarettes. Their re-education courses are brutal and the official vape alternative, Little Nico, is even more addictive than tobacco.
Religion has gotten weird.
Divisive sacred texts have been banned, as have symbols except for the peace sign, and MESS-approved clerics preach awareness from circular temples, as the congregation meditates or secretly watches sports games through headsets disguised as spectacles.
All our clothes are smart clothes now. Basically everything we wear and use is now cleverer than us and connected to the Internet.
With AI or its trendier new name CC (connected consciousness), the Internet is all around us, on us, and increasingly with all the tech implants, in us.
TV still exists, despite all predictions, being essential to combat boredom since most of our jobs are now done by machines.
MESS itself is in fact the only employer, and they screen all their applicants with the peace and unity test. This weeds out anyone who doesnt believe in the inevitable goodness of human progress.
I failed the test. My fish and chips are waiting.

Mobile data traffic in ASEAN, Oceania to grow by eleven-fold by 2022 – ComputerWeekly.com
Posted: at 4:38 am
Fuelled by growing adoption of 4G services and theinternet of things (IoT) in Southeast Asia and Oceania, mobile data traffic in the region is expected to surge 11-fold by 2022, a report by Ericsson has found.
Get an expert look at the government's ideas for a prosperous post-Brexit Britain as well as its ambitious 5G strategy. Features an interview with Sarah Wilkinson, chief data, digital and technology officer at the Home Office.
By submitting your personal information, you agree that TechTarget and its partners may contact you regarding relevant content, products and special offers.
You also agree that your personal information may be transferred and processed in the United States, and that you have read and agree to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy.
According to Ericsson, the expansion of 4G networks throughout the region is driving mobile subscriptions to monumental proportions. By the end of 2017, about 50% of all mobile subscriptions will be associated with smartphones, reaching around 70% by the end of 2022.
IoT is another key driver of mobile data traffic in the region, with the number of cellular IoT subscriptions slated to grow more than four-fold to 180 million between 2016 and 2022.
Ericsson said this would facilitate digital transformation of industries and provide mobile operators in the region with opportunities to take on different roles in the IoT value chain.
Despite the growth of cellular IoT subscriptions, radio technologies that operate on unlicensed spectrum will still dominate IoT deployments in the region.
Ericsson said cellular network operators could still play a crucial role in connecting IoT networks that ride on unlicensed spectrum to the internet, while negating the need for each IoT device to be cellular-enabled.
By 2022, early deployments of 5G will also translate into an estimated 28 million 5G subscriptions. Ericsson said new spectrum availability and the development of innovative use cases should help to accelerate the deployment of 5G services across Southeast Asia and Oceania.
Magnus Ewerbring, chief technology officer of Ericsson Asia-Pacific (APAC), said APAC would lead the global roll-out of 5G, along with North America.
This will be driven initially in South Korea in 2018, closely followed by Japan and China by 2020. Australia and Singapore are also expected to be early adopters of 5G, he said.
In May 2017, Singapores Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) said it wouldwaive the frequency fees for 5G trials in a bid to lower regulatory barriers and encourage the industry to test the next-generation mobile technology.
With the commercial deployment of 5G services and applications, spectrum needs are expected to increase substantially. IMDA has identified several spectrum bands from 800MHz to 86GHz that may be suitable for 5G deployments in Singapore.
5G networks are expected to be rolled out in Singapore by 2020. Telecoms operators such as Singtel and M1 have been testing 5G technology, with the latter having achieved the countrys highest transmission speeds of 35Gbps in January 2017.

3 NMI athletes drop bid for Oceania title – Marianas Variety
Posted: at 4:38 am
14 Jun 2017
THREE young athletes have pulled out of the team that will represent CNMI in the 2017 Oceania Athletics Association Area Championships in Suva, Fiji from June 26 to July 1.
Salvosa, Castillo and Calvo are among the nine athletes that NMA is gearing up for the Oceania championships. But Rangamar said the schedules of the event will conflict with their own equally important commitments.
Salvosa will have the most hectic schedule, Rangamar said. She will go to a soccer camp in the U.S. scheduled on the days too close to that of Oceania event.
Her schedules are too conflicted, I feel bad for her. We were trying to work her schedule but she would be traveling a lot from Fiji to the soccer camp so it is going to be so hectic for her so she pulled out, Rangamar said.
Castillo is heading to Marine Corps boot camp soon, while Calvo III cannot leave his work, Rangamar.
Rangamar said they got a replacement for Salvosa but not for Castillo and Calvo so NMI will be able to send eight athletes instead of nine as originally planned.
Salvosas replacement is Dandan Middle Schools Leani Acosta who won three gold medals in the Public School System-McDonalds All-Schools Athletics Championships last month.
The other NMI athletes who are preparing for this years Oceania championship are Beouch Ngirchongor, Zarinae Jones Sapong, Riella Ann Billy Ichiuo, Traven Quitugua, Annalei Santos and Jamie Pangelinan.
They will be leaving on June 24, with Preston Basa who will coach them and NMA General Secretary Robin Sapong.
