China Loosens Social Media Censorship To Uncover Dissent – MediaPost Communications
Posted: at 10:46 am
Just remember, when an authoritarian government expresses interest in your opinions, its not necessarily with your best interests at heart.
Thats what the Chinese government has been doing over the last few years, according to a study by researchers in Hong Kong, Sweden, and the United States.
The study found that the regime has been selectively loosening its grip on social media censorship and allowing users to discuss some sensitive topics but its doing this in part to better track dissent and nip potential protest movements in the bud.
For the study, titled Why Does China Allow Freer Social Media? Protests versus Surveillance and Propaganda and published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, researchers analyzed more than 13 billion posts made to Sina Weibo, a Chinese-language microblogging platform akin to Twitter, and correlated these with 545 collective protest events.
They discovered that online censors often allowed free discussion of controversial topics including official corruption and pollution, in many cases accompanied by calls for protests and strikes, apparently with an eye to preventing or limiting the latter.

Overall, around three million posts relating to protests or social conflict and another 1.3 million relating to strikes were allowed to remain by censors.
Towards that end, the authors state we find that social media can be very effective for protest surveillance, as Most of the real-world protests and strikes that we study can be predicted one day in advance based on social media content.
In one case, the city government of Chengdu simply canceled the weekend, requiring workers to show up at their workplaces and students to be in school, in order to head off a protest over a planned toxic chemical factory.
In fact, users seem to assume that their social media is being monitored, and use it as a channel to circumvent local officials and communicate directly with the central government.
In one interesting example, the user wrote: Billions of money went into the pockets of local officials and their business partners! President Xi, Premier Li, and Secretary Wang in the Central Discipline Inspection Department, do you read our microblogs? Can you hear our voice? Please eradicate these corrupt officials! Right now!

Ron Paul: Repeal Obamacare’s Abortion Mandates | FITSNews – FITSNews

WILL CONGRESS STOP FORCING PRO-LIFE AMERICANS TO SUBSIDIZE ABORTIONS?
Last month marked 44 years since the Supreme Courts Roe v. Wade decision declaring a constitutional right to abortion. Roe remains one of the Supreme Courts most controversial decisions. Even some progressive legal theorists who favor legalized abortion have criticized Roe for judicial overreach and faulty reasoning.
Throughout my medical and political careers, I have opposed abortion. I believe abortion is the killing of an innocent human life and, thus, violates the non-aggression principle that is the basis of libertarianism. Unfortunately many libertarians, including some of my close allies, support legalized abortion. These pro-abortion libertarians make a serious philosophical error that undermines the libertarian cause. If the least accountable branch of government can unilaterally deny protection of the right to life to an entire class of persons, then none of our rights are safe.
While I oppose abortion, I also oppose federal laws imposing a nationwide ban on abortion. The federal government has no authority to legalize, outlaw, regulate, or fund abortion. Instead of further nationalizing abortion, pro-life Americas should advocate legislation ending federal involvement in abortion by restoring authority over abortion to the states.
Congress should also end all taxpayer funding of abortion and repeal Obamacares abortion mandates, along with the rest of Obamacare. Forcing pro-life Americans to subsidize what they believe to be murder is, to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, sinful and tyrannical. That is why I was glad that one of the first actions of the new House of Representatives was to pass legislation ending all taxpayer support for abortion. Hopefully the bill will soon pass in the Senate and be signed into law by President Donald Trump. Congress should follow this action by passing legislation allowing antiwar taxpayers to opt out of funding the military-industrial complex as well.
The House-passed bill also repeals Obamacares mandates forcing private businesses to cover abortion and birth control under their health insurance plans. Of course I oppose these mandates. But, unlike many other opponents of the mandates, I oppose them because they violate the rights of property and contract, not because they violate religious liberty.
Opposing the mandates because they violate the religious liberty of a few, instead of the property rights of all, means implicitly accepting the legitimacy of government mandates as long as special exemptions are granted for certain groups of people from certain groups of mandates.
President Trump has already protected pro-life taxpayers (and unborn children) by reinstating President Reagans Mexico City policy. The Mexico City policy forbids US taxpayer money from being used to support any international organization that performs abortions or promotes abortions. Using taxpayer money to perform and promote abortions overseas is not only unconstitutional and immoral, it also increases resentment of the U.S. government. Unfortunately, as shown by the recent Yemen drone strikes, President Trump is unlikely to substantially change our militaristic foreign policy, which is responsible for the deaths of many innocent men, women, and children.
Ending taxpayer support for abortion is an important step toward restoring limited, constitutional government that respects the rights of all. However, those who oppose abortion must recognize that the pro-life causes path to victory will not come through politics. Instead, pro-lifers must focus on building a culture of life through continued education and, among other things, support for crisis pregnancy centers. These centers, along with scientific advances like ultrasound, are doing more to end abortion than any politician. Anti-abortion activists must also embrace a consistent ethic of life by opposing foreign policy militarism and the death penalty.

Transhumanist politician wants to run for governor of California – Engadget
Posted: at 10:42 am
"We need leadership that is willing to use radical science, technology, and innovationwhat California is famous for--to benefit us all," he wrote in a Newsweek article. "We need someone with the nerve to risk the tremendous possibilities to save the environment through bioengineering, to end cancer by seeking a vaccine or a gene-editing solution for it, to embrace startups that will take California from the world's 7th largest economy to maybe even the largest economy--bigger than the rest of America altogether."
When we spoke to him in November, Istvan made it clear that he would be looking at the Libertarian Party if he were to run for president again. Not only does he identify as libertarian, he also saw the benefit of working with a more established political party, instead of starting one from the ground up.
"The most important thing I learned from my presidential campaign is that this is a team sport," Istvan said in an email. "Without the proper managers, volunteers, spokespeople, and supporters, it's really impossible to make a dent in an election. That's part of the reason I joined the Libertarian Party for my governor run. They have tens of thousands of active supporters in California alone, so my election begins with real resources and infrastructure to draw upon. That's a large difference from my Presidential campaign, where we essentially were shoe-stringing it the whole time."
While Istvan says he considered running for local positions around the Bay Area, he described the competition as "fierce." He believes there's a better shot at snagging Republican and disgruntled Democrat votes by running against California Governor Gavin Newsom, who's already declared that he's running in the next gubernatorial election.
Istvan also sees the need for a pro-science and technology candidate today, especially given the Trump campaign's disdain for science. "This idea that we should drop environmental science, or be cautious on genetic engineering, or focus on the revitalization of nuclear weaponry is something I disagree with," he said. "I believe we should bet the farm on various radical technologies: artificial intelligence, gene therapies, 3D printed organs, driverless cars, drones, robots, stem cell tech, exoskeleton tech, virtual reality, brain wave neural prosthetics, to name a few. This is the way to grow an economy--with much creative innovation, what California is famous for."
Of course, just because Istvan wants to run doesn't mean he'll actually score the Libertarian Party nomination. His announcement, at this point, is basically just a statement of intent.

Stunning Transhumanism Dominates New ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Trailer – Inverse
Posted: at 10:42 am
Though Blade Runner is coming back this fall, Ghost in the Shell will give it a run for its cyberpunk money. As the Major (Scarlett Johansson) regains her quasi-human memories, her story doesnt just dabble in cyberpunk, it revels in it.
The arresting new trailer for Ghost in the Shell makes previous cyborg or transhumanist cyberpunk movies like The Matrix seem quaint. Literally everyone in in this trailer sports some kind of biohacking or cyborg accoutrements. But Scarlett Johanssons the Major mashes up visual cyberpunk cues with a convincing and totally immersive aesthetic. Its not just that the new Ghost in the Shell trailer looks cool; its that it looks believable.
Giving audiences the most extensive visual details yet, the trailer also introduces what will probably be the films primary baddie: the mysterious Kuze. In the narrative of previous iterations of Ghost in the Shell (a manga and an anime movie), the Majors human consciousness is put inside of robot body, making her a spiritual cyborg. In the new film, Kuze is seemingly at the center of the conspiracy surrounding her complex origin.
Ghost in the Shell opens on March 31.

Black Lives Matter Leader: White People are ‘Sub-Human,’ ‘Genetic Defects’ – Mediaite
Posted: at 10:41 am
The co-founder of the Toronto chapter of the Black Lives Matter protest movement has come under scrutiny in recent days for an old Facebook post that declared white people were genetically inferior to their black peers.
Whiteness is not humxness, wroteYusra Khogali,in a now-deleted post (using gender-neutral alternative spelling). In fact, white skin is sub-humxn. All phenotypes exist within the black family and white [people] are a genetic defect of blackness.
Khogali proceeded to go on an extended pseudoscientific rant about the benefits of dark skin, according to The Toronto Sun. Melanin enables black skin to capture light and hold it in its memory mode which reveals that blackness converts light into knowledge, she claims at one point. Melanin directly communicates with cosmic energy.
White [people] are recessive genetic defects. This is factual, she claimed, nonfactually.
Khogali made the Facebook post months ago, but her comments resurfaced after she declared Canadian Prime MinisterJustin Trudeaua white supremacist terrorist, earning her criticism from liberal allies.

Syrian forces used gas attacks as key part of campaign to retake Aleppo, Human Rights Watch says – Washington Post
Posted: at 10:41 am
Chlorine gas attacks paved the way for Syrian forces as they advanced into rebel-held portions of east Aleppo during the final months of the battle for the city, a new studyfrom Human Rights Watch said Monday.
While forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have usedchlorine gas on opposition fighters sporadically since 2014, the frequency of chemical attacks between Nov. 17 and Dec. 13 point to a military strategy to use the banned weapon to force both fighters and civilians fromAleppo, according to the report.
The pattern of the chlorine attacks shows that they were coordinated with the overall military strategy for retaking Aleppo, not the work of a few rogue elements, Ole Solvang, deputy emergencies director at Human Rights Watch, said in the report.
[Syrian military says it has retaken control of key city of Aleppo]
Human Rights Watch documented at least eight separate chlorine gas attacks before a cease-fire was signed Dec 13. The attacks resulted in the deaths of nine civilians, including four children, and wounded roughly 200. If confirmed, the attacks would be a significant breach of the 1993Chemical Weapons Convention that Syria signed in 2013. Although chlorine is not considered a chemical weaponby the convention because of its industrial uses, the document explicitly statesthat weaponizing the chemical properties of a substanceis prohibited.
When inhaled in large enough quantities, chlorine can be fatally toxic.
The Syrian government has routinely denied using internationally condemnedweapons such as chemical, cluster andincendiary munitions. In 2013, Syrian government forces were accused of using sarin gas in an attack that killed hundreds, bringingthe United States to the brinkof military action against Assad. In a last-minute deal coordinated by Russia, the Syrian presidentpledged to give up his chemical weaponstockpiles, and inOctober of that year signed the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Islamic State has also used chemical weapons, including variants of sulfur mustard powder.
Following the deal, however, Assad continued to use chlorine as a weapon. Last year, a United Nations investigative teamdeterminedthat Syrian government forces had been responsible for three separate gas attacks inApril 2014 and March 2015.
Although the report doesnt directly implicate Russia, it does say that Russian forces benefited from the strategic effects of the gas attacks. Russian forces had been providing close air support for Syrian government forces since September 2015 and flew hundreds, if not thousands, of sorties during the battle to retake Aleppo. Russian Special Operations forces also likely participated in the campaign, fighting and advisingalongside Syrian troops as they pushed into the city.
The report relied oninterviews with witnesses, videos, photographs and social media postings to verify the eight attacks. Some of theposts included pictures of thespent gas canisters dropped from Syrian helicoptersand footage of the trademark yellow-greenchlorine clouds billowing fromresidential areas.
The Human Rights Watch study was one of two reports released Monday that covered the battle of Aleppo. The Atlantic Council, a Washington-based think tank, published a report titled Breaking Aleppo that also accused the Syrian government of using chlorine bombs and the joint Syrian-Russian air campaign ofdropping cluster and incendiarymunitions on civilian areas.

Opinion: Naming of Tamara Thermitus to human rights post is welcome – Montreal Gazette

Lawyer Tamara Thermitus has been named head of the Quebec Human Rights Commission. Handout / Montreal Gazette
Its been a long time coming, but a change has finally come. The seemingly impossible became possible, right smack bang during Black History Month, almost like a long-awaited gift to Quebec blacks. Tamara Thermitus, an anti-discrimination lawyer of Haitian origin, was named head of the Quebec Human Rights Commission last week, with the unanimous support of the National Assembly.
Her appointmentwas not a slam dunk, however it may now appear; it was originally challenged by opposition politicianswho claimed that she was too multiculturalist and much too close for comfort to Dominique Anglade, a Liberal cabinet ministerwho also shares the same roots.
The Human Rights Commission is specifically mandated to ensure that Quebecs laws, bylaws, standards and institutional practices, both public and private, comply with the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, which prohibits discrimination based on race, colour, ethnic or national origin and religion.
Hitherto, the commission lacked both anglophone and minority representation, and since its creation in 1976, Thermitus willbe the second woman and the first black to oversee the organization a situation that testifiesto the underrepresentation of black Quebecers in decision-making bodies.
Despite the fact that the appointment of Thermitus as head of Quebec Human Rights Commission is truly symbolic for the blacks and the Haitian community in Quebec, blacks should not be lulled into a false sense of complacency. We have made strides and advances, giving the impression that everything is resolved, but this is not the case. We must press on for diversity with the appointment of the other four remaining human rights commissioners. There is an urgent and ongoing need for public education to ensure that there is better awareness regarding the value of diversity to society as a whole.
According to Premier Philippe Couillard, the appointment of Thermitus sends a very strong signal about the place that people from diverse backgroundsmust occupy in our society. Strong words well spoken would be better if adhered to. Parti Qubcois then-leadership candidate Jean-Franois Lise in September 2016 pointed out the presence of systemic racism in Quebec, and called on the government to spring into action rather than hold public consultations. In response, Couillards government said it would soon announce a plan to look into the issue. Since the creation of the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal in 1990, the Human Rights Commission has never brought a case of systemic racism before the tribunal. The first court decision on systemic racism in Quebec was issued only in 2013 by the Superior Court. That case involved Olthene Tanisma, a Haitian-born urban planner who successfully sued the City of Montreal, after his case was stalled at the Human Rights Commission.
In order to cultivate an arena of legitimacy in the eyes of the citizenry, Couillard was repeatedly called upon when filling existing vacancies to give thoughtful and deliberate consideration to racial and linguistic diversity. At that time there was an unprecedented absence of black or anglophone commissioners in the current composition, which only served to further impair the decision-making process.
It stands to basic logic that in a world where perception can be as important as reality, it is critically important that visible minorities believe that the deck is evenly stacked, and that they have as much of a chance of being judged by someone who looks like them, as someone else.
The current appointment of Tamara Thermitus as head of the Quebec Human Rights Commission will go a long way toward allaying any fear and improving chances of a satisfactory resolution. But with her appointment, have black Quebecers seen the last of the past, and does this herald a new cast? Or willthis, as welcome as it is, be seen as a mere sop, an isolated gesture?
Yvonne Sam is a retired Montreal nurse and teacher.

Lockheed’s F-35 Fighter Jet Just Demolished the Competition – Futurism

Multiple Threats in Modern Warfare
Each year at the Red Flag exercise organized by the United States Air Force Warfare Center (USAFWC), the air forces of several NATO countries gather at the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada for a series of advanced aerial combat training exercises. This year, one fighter plane took center stage at the event, according to a report by Aviation Week.
Lockheed Martins F-35 Lightning IIstole the show, outperforming its competition with a ratio of 15 kills for every one F-35 that was downed and it all happened in an increased threat environment. In the past, the non-kinetic effects were not fully integrated into the kinetic fight, Air Force Cyber Forward director Col. Robert Cole explained in a statement.
This integration in an exercise environment allows our planners and warfighters to understand how to best integrate these, learn their capabilities and limitations, and become ready to use [these combined resources for maximum] effect against our adversaries, he added.
Lockheed Martins latest fighteris different from those that preceded it precisely because its meant to face multiple threats at a time and react to increasingly complex warfare scenarios. The F-35 is the most advanced multi-role fighter combining advanced stealth capabilities with fighter aircraft speed and agility, fully-fused sensor information, network-enabled operations, and advanced logistics and sustainment, according to Lockheed Martin.
This means that its not just capable of taking on conventional threats and enemy surveillance, it can also deal with cyberthreats and electronic warfare. Before, where we would have one advanced threat and we would put everything we had F-16s, F-15s, F-18s, missiles, we would shoot everything we had at that one threat just to take it out now we are seeing three or four of those threats at a time, Lt. Col. George Watkins told Aviation Week. Just between [the F-35] and the [F-22] Raptor, we are able to geolocate them, precision-target them, and then we are able to bring the fourth-generation assets in behind us after those threats are neutralized.
In short, the F-35s advanced capabilities make it the fighter jet of the future, ready to take on more modern threats. As Watkins said, Its a whole different world out there for us now.
