Iraqi soldiers fire their weapons toward ISIS group positions in the Garma district, west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, on Sunday, April 26. Pro-government forces say they have recently made advances on areas held by Islamist jihadists. Iraqi security forces control pockets of territory in Anbar, a vast desert province that stretches from the borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to the western approaches to Baghdad.

2nd Amendment advocates push to repeal switchblade, other …

Shown here is a spring-assisted knife.(AP)
Once overshadowed by the hot-button gun rights debate, laws restricting knife sales and possession are the new "second front" in the battle to preserve Second Amendment rights.
The issue has gained more attention in recent years -- most recently in Baltimore, where obscure knife laws have surfaced at the center of the Freddie Gray death case.Well before that case, though, the nonprofit advocacy group Knife Rights has been steadily working in state capitals across the country to roll back or repeal longstanding knife bans and restrictions.
And they've seen a string of successes.
Weve introduced the Second Amendment to a significant number of people who never considered it their amendment, said Doug Ritter, who founded Knife Rights in Arizona in 2009.
The group argues that possessing and carrying any kind of blade is, as with guns, a right enshrined in the Constitution. They've deployed that argument to, so far, help 10 states wipe most -- if not all -- knife restrictions from the books. It also has successfully advocated for so-called preemption laws in eight states, blocking local jurisdictions from circumventing state law with their own, stricter regulations.
Not all repeals are the same -- some leave laws against switchblades like stilettos on the books. But others are comprehensive, like in Oklahoma and Maine, which just legalized switchblades, in March and April respectively.
Knife Rights first victory was in 2010, when it worked to get all switchblades, dirks and daggers legalized in New Hampshire. Bills in several other states are currently pending.
Theres no blood running in the streets, no state has come back and said we shouldnt have done this and tried to reinstate [laws], Ritter said.
Contrary to the image of gang members carrying butterfly knives to the local rumble, people carry knives for a multitude of reasons, and it is not to maim or kill, Ritter said. The reality is, millions of Americans use and own knives at home, work, and recreation. But every once in a while someone uses a knife as an arm, to protect the family.

Gene responsible for hypertension, brachydactyly …
Posted: at 2:41 pm
Individuals with this altered gene have hereditary hypertension (high blood pressure) and at the same time a skeletal malformation called brachydactyly type E, which is characterized by unusually short fingers and toes. The effect on blood pressure is so serious that -- if left untreated -- it most often leads to death before age fifty. After more than 20 years of research, scientists of the Experimental and Clinical Research Center (ECRC), a joint cooperation between the MDC Max Delbrck Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association and the Charit -- Universittsmedizin Berlin have now identified the gene that causes this rare syndrome. In six families not related to each other they discovered different point mutations in the gene encoding phosphodiesterase-3A (PDE3A). These mutations always lead to high blood pressure and shortened bones of the extremities, particularly the metacarpal and metatarsal bones. This syndrome is the first Mendelian hypertension form (salt-resistant) not based on salt reabsorption but instead is more directly related to resistance in small blood vessels.
"In 1994, when we began with the study of this disease and examined the largest of the affected families in Turkey for the first time, modern DNA sequencing methods did not yet exist. Extensive gene databases to facilitate the search for the cause of this genetic disease were also lacking back then," said PD Dr. Sylvia Bhring, senior author of the research group's publication headed by Professor Friedrich C. Luft.
"Veritable treasure trove for genetics"
In 1996, the research group succeeded in comparing the genetic material of healthy and diseased family members in order to localize the chromosome region where this disease gene must reside. The region they detected was on a segment of chromosome 12 and was an estimated 10 million base pairs in size. "Ultimately however," said Dr. Bhring, "a 16-year-old Turkish boy helped us to pinpoint this gene. He is a veritable treasure trove for the field of genetics." He also has severe high blood pressure -- like all other test subjects he is being treated anti-hypertensive drugs -- but his hands are nearly normal. Only the metacarpal bones of his little fingers are slightly shortened.
Whole-genome sequencing of the DNA from several people with the syndrome recently enabled Dr. Philipp G. Maass, Dr. Atakan Aydin, Professor Luft, Dr. Okan Toka (formerly MDC/Charit, now the University of Erlangen), Dr. Carolin Schchterle (MDC research group Dr. Enno Klumann) and Dr. Bhring to identify the gene and six different point mutations in a total of six families from around the world. It is the gene PDE3A, which contains the blueprint for the enzyme, phosphodiesterase 3A. The six different point mutations, which the researchers pinpointed in the PDE3A gene, lead to the exchange of a single DNA building block that is different in each family. In each case, one amino acid of the enzyme is exchanged.
One gene -- two different syndromes
But how can one mutated gene cause two quite different diseases such as hypertension and brachydactyly? The ECRC researchers also provide the explanation for this in their study. The task of the phosphodiesterase encoded by the PDE3A gene is to control the quantity of the two secondary messenger proteins present in each cell, cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) and cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate), and thus to regulate the duration of their activity.
The mutations in the gene PDE3A, however, cause the enzyme phosphodiesterase to be overexpressed. Thus, it modulates too much of the secondary messenger protein cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) into AMP (adenosine monophosphate). As a result, the cell has less cAMP at its disposal. The consequence is that, in the affected family members, the smooth muscle cells of the vascular wall of small arteries divide to a greater extent. This proliferation leads to a thickening of the vascular muscle layer, and the blood vessels narrow and stiffen, resulting in high blood pressure. Furthermore, a too low cAMP level in the vascular muscle cells also leads to increased narrowing of the blood vessels.
But what effect do the lowered cAMP levels have on the development of the bones of the extremities? The gene that elicits the skeletal malformation brachydactyly type E is PTHLH (parathyroid hormone-like hormone). In the cartilage cells, a transcription factor (CREB), activated by cAMP, binds in the control region of the gene. This factor ensures that the gene is transcribed and can affect the growth of the cartilage. If there is less cAMP in the cartilage cell, this mechanism is disturbed. This situation then leads to the shortening of the metacarpals and metatarsals, namely the fingers and toes. Thus, by varying the cellular signal transduction, one point mutation can elicit two different characteristics in one and the same person.

Putin takes jab at US, NATO during vast Victory Day parade …

Thousands of Russian troops marched across Red Square under the eye of Vladimir Putin on Saturday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Unions World War II victory over Nazi Germany.
The largest Victory Day parade since the fall of the Soviet Union showed off Russias biggest nuclear missiles and some of Mr. Putins best new military hardware, including the much touted Armata T-14 tank.
In comments subtly directed at NATO, Mr. Putin said that military alliances were gaining strength and warned against a unipolar worldshorthand in Moscow for the global influence of the U.S. In another apparent jab at Washington, he said that the principles of international cooperation were being ignored.
We have seen attempts to create a unipolar world. We see how military-bloc thinking is gaining force. All this undermines the sustainability of global development, Mr. Putin said in front of war veterans, their chests heavy with medals, wiping away tears.
Our common goal should be the development of a system of equal security for all governments. System adequate [to deal with] modern threats, built on regional and global nonaligned bases. Only then can we ensure peace and tranquility in the world, he said.
Unlike the parade ten years ago, when U.S. President George W. Bush sat next to Mr. Putin to watch the soldiers march by, this years celebrations, boycotted by most Western leaders, highlighted the divisions wrought by the crisis in Ukraine.
This year, Mr. Putin was flanked by Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, underscoring Russias turn to the East in the face of Western sanctions. On the eve of the parade, Messrs. Xi and Putin signed a raft of deals to cement closer ties, including a promise from China to offer up to $25 billion to Russian companies who are facing an economic crisis at home.

Nasdaq will start using Bitcoin technology – May. 11, 2015
Posted: at 1:45 am
Most people have heard of Bitcoin (XBT) as a system of electronic money -- one that hasn't really caught on yet.
But what gets less attention is blockchain, the technology that powers the Bitcoin system. It's a computer program that automatically processes transactions and creates a perfect, reliable digital record.
High-tech bankers are starting to realize this could revolutionize trading. Nasdaq (NDAQ), a favorite exchange among many technology companies, is making the first move.
On Monday, the stock market announced it will start using a blockchain system to keep records for its Nasdaq Private Market, which handles trading of shares in the pre-IPO phase before a company goes public.
Nasdaq sees the blockchain's perfect recordkeeping as a major step in the right direction for more transparency. The pre-IPO market doesn't typically see as much trading and what does occur is often by a tight circle of employees and early investors.
"Blockchain technology will provide extensive integrity, audit ability, governance and transfer of ownership capabilities," Nasdaq said in its public announcement.
This doesn't mean Nasdaq is using actual Bitcoins. But by using Bitcoin's core technology, this is a major acknowledgment of Bitcoin's contribution to finance and trade. This is the first time the world has seen a trading system that doesn't require a trusted middleman. It sounds boring, but in the banking world, it's revolutionary.
CNN explains: What is Bitcoin?
It seems odd to equate Bitcoin with better security. The world's first true big digital currency is generally known for two things. One, its popularity in online black markets. Two, the epic fall of Mt. Gox, a major Bitcoin exchange market that wiped out $400 million in people's savings.
But these have nothing to do with the digital currency itself. Bitcoin's perfect recordkeeping actually helped convict a black market kingpin. And computer security experts say Bitcoin's technology actually makes it more secure than any other money transfer system.
