5 Things Every Human Should Know About Light

Posted: at 3:41 pm

2015 is the International Year of Light (but the universal year of light is in 2533). I think we can all agree that light is very important in just about all aspects of our lives. But what are the key things that every human should know about it? Ok, I am going to give a pass on humans under the age of 7. Younger kids probably know lots of things about light (since they use it all the time) but lets just not worry about them for now. So, if you are over the age of 7, pay attention.

What is a wave? Lets start with an example. Toss a rock into a puddle and you will see something like this:

Slow motion video of waves in a puddle.

The rock makes a disturbance in the water (a ripple). This disturbance moves radially outward from where the rock hit. It is the disturbance moving outward, not the water molecules they just move up and down. You can do something similar with a length of string. Place it on the floor and continue to shake one end. The disturbance travels down the string (a heavy string works better).

Lets look at the case of a wave traveling down a string. There are 4 properties that you could consider:

These 4 properties are:

The last three properties are related. The speed of the wave is equal to the product of the wavelength and the frequency.

So, light is a wave. This means that it has all the above properties and can do wavey things such as:

Light does all these things.

UN rights office disappointed to see Anwars prison sentence upheld

Posted: at 3:41 pm

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said yesterday that it is disappointed that Malaysias Federal Court ruled to uphold the imprisonment of opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar embraces Wan Azizah after the Federal Court verdict on 10 February 2015

The Federal Court agreed with a decision made by the Appeals Court in March 2014, which sentenced Anwar to five years in prison on charges of sodomy, a crime that should not exist under international human rights law, said the High Commissioners spokesperson, Rupert Colville, briefing press in Geneva.

Colville said Anwar had faced a number of charges and lengthy judicial processes after removal from the Government in 1998.

There were allegations that that case had been politically motivated and the trial marred by violations of due process rights in relation to the opportunities provided to the defence, raising concerns about the fairness of the judicial process, said Colville. In addition, Mr. Ibrahim had been investigated and his lawyers prosecuted under the 1948 Sedition Act for speaking about the case.

Colville added that OHCHR was highly concerned by the increasing use of the Sedition Act in an apparently arbitrary and selective fashion, against political opposition, human rights activists, journalists, lawyers and university professors in Malaysia since 2014.

Futurist Jack Uldrich to Address Future Trends and Unlearning with Outsourcing Professionals

Posted: at 3:40 pm

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) February 11, 2015

In her article on outsourcing, Nancy Mann Jackson says, Entrepreneurs have long seen outsourcing as a strategy reserved for big business, but technology has made it a more accessible tool for small businesses--and for some small firms, outsourcing has made a powerful impact on their growth, productivity and bottom lines. Futurist Jack Uldrich says, that outsourcing coupled with, unlearning, is the wave of the future, not just for entrepreneurs, but for all organizations.

Uldrich, a futurist and best selling author will be addressing the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals on February 16th in Phoenix, AZ.

Named by BusinessWeek as Americas Chief Unlearning Officer Uldrich will explain why unlearning is a critical skill for the IAOP. Uldrich says, We live in a world where constant change is the only constant. New advances in technology bring forth exciting discoveries every day. But often lost in this new reality is the fact that organizations must unlearn old, obsolete knowledge and old ways of doing business, before they can seize tomorrows opportunities.

Uldrichs passion for unlearning has launched a career of speaking all over the world to a wide variety of organizations such as the Million Dollar Round Table, Allina, wells Fargo, ABB, Cargill and GE, among others.

Having recently delivered a keynote to the the Vision Council 2015 Summit, Uldrichs keynote was quoted as, Fantastic, inspiring, relevant, provocative, informative, insightful, entertaining, professional, compelling." On the 16th, following his keynote at the IAOP event, Uldrich will also sit on a panel for the Food Marketing Institute discussing the Internet of Things.

Parties interested in learning more about Jack, his books, his daily blog or his speaking availability are encouraged to visit his website. Media wishing to know more about either the event or interviewing Jack as a futurist or trend expert can contact Amy Tomczyk at (651) 343.0660.

Using powerful optics, astronomers have found a planet-like body, J1407b, with rings 200 times the size of Saturn's. This is an artist's depiction of the rings of planet J1407b, which are eclipsing a star.

A patch of stars appears to be missing in this image from the La Silla Observatory in Chile. But the stars are actually still there behind a cloud of gas and dust called Lynds Dark Nebula 483. The cloud is about 700 light years from Earth in the constellation Serpens (The Serpent).

This is the largest Hubble Space Telescope image ever assembled. It's a portion of the galaxy next door, Andromeda (M31).

NASA has captured a stunning new image of the so-called "Pillars of Creation," one of the space agency's most iconic discoveries. The giant columns of cold gas, in a small region of the Eagle Nebula, were popularized by a similar image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1995.

Hubble Telescope Spots an Emoticon in Outer Space

Posted: at 11:50 am

TIME Science space Hubble Telescope Spots an Emoticon in Outer Space Hubble/ESA/NASA Galaxy cluster SDSS J1038+4849 It's actually a cluster of galaxies

In the center of this Hubble Telescope image is the galaxy cluster SDSS J1038+4849 and it appears to be smiling back at you.

The two orange eyes of the grinning face are actually two distant galaxies, and the peculiar smile was caused by an effect known as strong gravitational lensing.

Galaxy clusters are so large that they can create a strong gravitational pull that warps the time and space surrounding them. From afar this creates a distorted view of reality, known as a cosmic lens.

There are thousands of images within the Hubble database that have only been viewed by a few scientists. However, Hubble opens up its massive database to the public to search through. A version of this particular image was brought to attention by a contestant, Judy Smith, through the Hubbles Hidden Treasures image processing competition.
